Bake Sale By: Eric Chen Westview High School

On Saturday, December 20th WVKC had its annual winter bake sale at the popular Christmas Card Lane neighborhood with proceeds going towards Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). Borrowing the front lawn of an extremely nice lady, we set up tables and chairs along the street beginning at 4pm, where members arrived to drop off their baked sweets or to help out through the night. Lucky since I wasn’t the best baker out there, many of our members created some delicious treaties that included candy canes, cupcakes, cookies and banana bread. Despite running into a few problems with power outages and lack of hot water, it improved through the night as we started serving warming hot chocolate along with our baked sweets. The entire night included interesting advertisement cheers, serving tons of hot chocolate and spending the night for a great cause with our WVKC family. With the support of bakers, ! ! volunteers and our members, we earned $328.89 for PTP, a successful and memorable night.

Kiwanis Gift Wrapping By: Ariel Yue Mt. Carmel High School !

Kiwanis Gift Wrapping – December 8, 2014 The Kiwanis Gift Wrapping event was a high-energy, bustling event. Volunteers turned the Mount Carmel Church of the Nazarene into Santa’s Workshop before the great holiday rush. Volunteers were like Santa’s elves, working as efficiently as possible to spread the holiday spirit. The goal of the night was to wrap books, scissors, crayons, and hand-carved toy cars, for children. Volunteers organized into groups to handpick, clean, and wrap gifts for children. Within each group, designated members measured and cut the wrapping paper, wrapped the items, and dispensed tape. This system ran at a quick pace, with everyone contributing their best efforts to work together to complete a common goal. Since the books were a definite squares or rectangles, they were simple to wrap. However, the scissors and cars had irregular shapes, making them more difficult to wrap. Those who were skilled at the art of origami were able to easily wrap the scissors, but the cars were still a challenge. Eventually, we devised an innovative method, to wrap the cars like candy. By the end of the night, all of the books, scissors, crayons, and cars were organized into small packages to be delivered to students.

Resolution Run By: Kathleen Chang Torrey Pines High School

Today, I went to the Resolution Run. We arrived at the race near the bay close to the airport. The race had lots of booths already set up. When we arrived, we got split in half, half of us clipping tags and handing out medals at the 5k finish line and the other half at the 15k finish line. We started clipping tags. I got assigned to the 5k finish line. I started clipping tags as soon as I got there. After about an hour and a half, all the racers had finished the race. We helped clean up all the finish line area. The 5K race was completely over, but there were still a few racers finishing the 15K race. Some of us went over to help clip the tags off the racers, and to sort the twist-ties out of the box of tags. Overall, there was a lot of clipping. Afterwards, though, we got to look at all the booths at the race with samples of their food. We helped clean up, along with another group of ! volunteers.
