Hey Red Bulls! I hope you all had a fantastic Spring Break and a great DCON experience (for those that attended). If you couldn’t make it to DCON, don’t forget that ICON is right in our backyard this year! I’d like to thank you for coming out to my first DCM! It’s because of YOU that I took the chance to run for this position and serve the division. I’m excited to work with all of you over the next year to make our division the best that it can be. I know that most of us have a month of standardized and CollegeBoard testing “fun” ahead, but I’d like to encourage you to stay active in Key Club (remember that academics is your first priority!) and continue to serve over the summer. I also hope you’ll join the rest of Region 2 at our upcoming picnic! More details about that will soon be sent to both you and your officers, so stay tuned! Stomping for service, Michael Zhang

EVENT SPOTLIGHT DAY OF SERVICE 3/29 After months of planning, our big service project with our sponsoring Kiwanis club finally happened! We had to jump through some hurdles in terms of time, location, and budgeting, but all of our planning paid off in a super successful event. As everyone was setting up tables and chairs inside the Hilltop Recreation Center for our “Day of Service”, I helped put up flyers around the park to encourage some people in our community to join in on the fun. Once that was done, all of the set-up had been completed! Each Key Club had its own station with a unique service activity. Mt. Carmel brought yarn and looms to knit baby hats for the Pregnancy Crisis Center, as well as paper and art supplies to make cards for the kids at Rady Children’s Hospital. Westview had lots of colorful string to make friendship bracelets for kids with cancer, and the Rancho Bernardo KIWINS had card-making supplies to write thank-you letters to veterans. The Black Mountain Builders Club brought paper to make woven placemats for Meals on Wheels. Other activities included making care packages, graduation leis, candy necklaces, and more! I wanted to knit a baby hat, but it seemed that our station was quite popular, so I decided to make a placemat first. I chose black and white paper and ended up “weaving” a placement that looked like a chess board. So I decided to cut out a white piece of paper in the shape of the queen chess piece, and glued it to the placemat with the message “Checkmate, you’re great!” (So punny.) Afterward, I took some materials outside to make a card for Rady Children’s Hospital. For my last activity, I made a friendship bracelet using magenta, pink, dark blue, and light blue string. I had to leave early, but there were so many things that I wish I had been able to try. The event was more successful than we expected (we ran out of room inside the recreation center, so a lot of people had to move outside!), and Mt. Carmel brought more than 60 volunteers from our school over the course of the day (plenty of which were not Key Club members!).
