Hey Red Bulls, Can you believe that it’s already almost August? Summer has passed by extremely quickly, and I’ve hope you’ve all been relaxing and enjoying the time off. That said, our fundraising total remains impressive, and there are many fundraisers still up ahead, along with results from previous efforts coming in. It’s good to see that our service hours have found a consistent pace of growth, but I’d like to see that line go even higher! Remember, the district goal is 5 projects per month, so do the best to make the most of that goal with your relatively free summer schedules. I’d like to give a huge thank you to everyone who was able to make it to the D21/D37S Officer Training Conference. It was so amazing to the attendance break the expected attendance by 50%! If you haven’t already, please fill out the feedback survey, available in the Google Group. We also have a ton of events coming up. The Poway Kiwanis will be hosting a picnic at Poway Lake on Sunday the 27th from 11am-3pm for an admission of $5. The August DCM will be taking place at the beach on August 10th, and District Key to College is on the 16th. Finally, don’t forget that T-Shirt designs are due to me by August 1st at 6:00pm. I hope you have a wonderful rest of the summer. Stomping for service, Michael Zhang

Event Spotlight !

Morning-After Mess Cleanup The Morning After Mess was a beach cleanup through "I Love A Clean San Diego" and other cleanup organizations. My group was given bags and gloves upon check-in and then we were on our way. Very quickly, we noticed how prevalent cigarette butts were at the beach. An officer pointed out that even though smoking is not permitted at beaches, cigarette butts are the most common form of litter in them. In our mere three hours of volunteering, we collected over 150 cigarette butts. At one point, we were pushing sand back and forth because we found that a lot of cigarette butts were hidden in the sand. They were everywhere and they are neither recyclable nor digestible, meaning they are a hazard for local animals. I'm glad I got to help out, even if it was just a little. My group collected a total of 5 pounds worth of trash and recyclables, and we got a cute little reward at the end. Rubio's was sponsoring the event and they provided rewards per pound of trash collected. It was like a type of volunteer currency. I got a t-shirt for collecting three pounds, and there were also other options (food, pens, etc.). I thought that was a nice and pleasant surprise, and they made it all the more rewarding to volunteer. I hope to do more beach clean ups in the future because it was fun helping a nice cause with a nice view.

Event Spotlight !

Red Shoe Day At Red Shoe Day, our volunteers stood at the Bernardo Center Drive crosssection and collected donations from passing cars. From 6:30 to 10 A.M., a large sum of people contributed to the Ronald McDonald House organization. All of the volunteers approached different people who had to stop at the intersection and asked for donations. It was very fun to get to know other people and help provide for the community. All proceeds were used to help fund the Ronald McDonald House. The volunteers enjoyed being able to make a change to such a meaningful organization. To see all types of people wanting to help us was an eye opening experience.

Event Spotlight !

The Country Run 5K

The Country Run 5K was the Del Mar Fair’s first ever run. It resulted in an enormous turnout that was rewarded with free T-shirts, branded cowboy hats, and free admission into the fair. Beginning at 6:00 A.M., volunteers were separated into three groups: registration, bag check, and water. Being apart of the bag check group, I looked through each runner’s things to ensure a safe and enjoyable time. The group nearby provided each runner with a bib number and a hat at registration. After about 4 hours, the volunteers were free to enjoy the fair with the runners.
