OVERVIEW I CAN SOLVE PROBLEMS

Cite the strong point(s) about yourself that has allowed you to do well (or at least survive) in Math this quarter. Identify a specific crisis or problem that your barangay, region OR the country experienced this past year or is currently facing (not the covid pandemic in general), and describe how your strong point(s) can be used to help resolve the crisis or deal with the problem.

I CARE FOR OTHERS

Cite qualities or points about yourself which you think you should work on for you to be able to relate or work better with your groupmates, classmates or colleagues in an organization or community. Describe in detail an experience with your groupmates, classmates or colleagues which could have turned out better if you had a different attitude or behavior.

I AM A CRITICAL THINKER Think of a particular lesson we had in BC which you personally found to be the most challenging. How did you meet or handle this challenge? Consider the coming elections in May. How would you deal with the false information, fake news and misleading statements of many candidates?

I CONTRIBUTE

Identify your most significant achievement in Math this term and explain what this says about you as a Math student and as a citizen. Do you think that you are capable of making the right choice when your turn to vote comes?

I CREATE

Produce an original work that will demonstrate your ability to make mathematical connections (how you use Math outside your Math classes). Present it in a form that you are most comfortable with (art work, work in another subject, mathematical application, etc.)

i can

solve problems

The most prominent point that I noticed about myself more and more each quarter, especially during basic calculus, is that I am very interested in mathematics. With this, I am very driven to learn and I push for the best outcome possible. I think this can really be seen, judging by the grades I have been receiving, as one of the strengths I have as a student and a person in general. Even with problems or little bumps in the road toward understanding the lesson, I still make a way to fully grasp it. I really experienced starting when I answered the first PSW. Of

Hi mom !

course, I aim for an E all the time and somehow, maybe because of the pressure, this got confusing for me. It was a simple problem yet it took me so long. I went back to the problem everyday for almost a week and even consulted with my parents. I also noticed that it helped me process the problem when I talked to my family about the process and solution. Although my family couldn’t understand the problem most of the time, I think they really supported me and doing it reflected my drive for the subject. Being driven to do the best and being interested has allowed me to, not only survive, but also do my very best. Second to this, one of my strengths is the fact that I know my priorities. Although being driven does wonders, we can be driven for multiple things which we should know which to put first. The drive I have goes hand in hand with me being aware of my priorities. I, like any other teen, want to do a lot of things. Nevertheless, at an early age, I have already known my priorities and my family has reminded me of this. The number one priority I have has always

been my academics but there are times where I do not feel like studying. During these times, I remind myself of my priority, the ones that may have a long term effect in my life. With that, I have learned to control myself and stick to the best course of action. This knowledge and ability has helped me to learn more and achieve the most out of Basic Calculus. Additionally, because of the drive I have for Basic Calculus, there is some bias as to which subject I will put first. I realized this and it is evident when I finished the second PSW a week before it was due while still getting an 8 out of 8 and understanding the lesson. I think a factor adding to this is that I want to pursue mathematics. Overall, there are things which we feel more urge towards which we prioritize more, but we should know to control ourselves and prioritize what is more important. Similarly, as my PSW proves, being driven can really solve problems. It allows us to keep on going even if we have issues along the way. This, paired with our idea of our priorities, may produce the best outcome possible. With this, on a national level, the easing of the lockdown has been a discussion. Some say that the easing of lockdown may be too quick especially because recently restrictions in NCR have been eased to Alert Level 1 after the sudden surge. If I were to approach this problem, I believe that it is best that my strong points are utilized. There is no doubt that I would be and am driven to end the pandemic, but also keep our economy alive. However, during this time I believe it would be best that we prioritize public health. With that, and my ability to be aware of my priorities, I think that it would be best to not rush the easing of restrictions. This way we could ensure the safety of the public once we (gradually) start our economy again, and, hopefully, completely be a COVID free country. In conclusion, even with bigger problems, being driven and prioritizing more important aspects may lead to the possible and long term resolution.

Be Driven and Know your Priorities

I care for others A little less than a week before the Final, my group started practicing. We did multiple exercises, some of which we completed while some we were either wrong or we couldn’t understand. We did these practices every night for a number of days. In one case, I have studied a similar problem so I have an idea to solve it. I brought up how to solve it but they had a different idea. However, I didn’t stand up for my idea and just agreed with them. Because of that experience, I realized that one thing I should work on would be my self-confidence. I still continuously doubt my abilities even if sometimes I know that I am more than capable of solving a particular problem. Upon checking the answer key, we found that the method that they pursued was wrong and the way I thought was right. I think that it was my lack of trust in myself which led to this and if I had stuck to and pushed for my solution, a better outcome would be produced. With that, I believe that if I would’ve pushed for my method it would have been more efficient, and of course correct. Moving forward, working with my groupmates, classmates, or generally my colleagues, I would trust myself. This would be best because then we have different methods and options which we can try to solve. If one were to be incorrect, we can try another one.

Trust Yourself

I am a critical thinker In my opinion, I really felt the saying: “Starting is always the hardest part”. This is because the first module which was about limits was most challenging. During this time, my anxiety levels were higher than usual given the sudden rise of cases and feeling overwhelmed with the requirements for the quarter. At the very start, self-doubt started kicking in, a voice in my head telling me that I can’t do it but at the same time rushing to finish the module ahead of time and be able to do other requirements that were not given yet. Aside from this, all I could think about was the subject being hard and there was already an upcoming OFQ in a week (but it was canceled). I was so worried that I couldn’t understand it in time for me to take the quiz. It was my anxiety that pushed me to rush the module and make it more challenging for me to understand. Fortunately, I quickly acknowledged this and paced myself. I decided to go over the module again, taking my time, until I finally understood the lesson. In all honesty, it took me almost a week to fully understand it since I kept on repeating the videos and doing the exercises over and over again. Upon taking the quiz, even if it isn’t graded, I would say I got a pretty good grade which shows that in a way what I did was effective.

Assuming that I have the same anxiety and fears for the future in which the upcoming may elections would have its effect, I think that the best way of facing this would be just like how I faced the first module. Especially because a lot of false information, fake news, and misleading statements are going around, it would be best for us to take my time. We should take time to fact check to really listen to the candidates and what they have to say.

In addition, we must check and find reliable sources in order to get the truth. Go over the data to be 100% sure that it is true. Lastly, we ourselves should be responsible and also take time to spread only what is true. Overall, taking our time will help us fully grasp and absorb different events in our life especially when faced with a big decision. In the long run, this will allow us to have a better future.

I

contribute

Looking back at how this quarter (or in general the year) started, I am so proud of myself for making it this far. The mere fact that I was able to survive and even get good grades has been very much significant. However, I think that it is what is behind my hard work and dedication which has been much more significant. The grades I got reflected my own growth including the growth of my love for Mathematics. Never did I expect to enjoy this subject as many always viewed it as hard. In my case, instead of viewing it as hard, I saw it as challenging and exciting. Of course this wasn’t the case at the start given the situation, but throughout the quarter I enjoyed the subject more and more. The love I had for the subject pushed me to strive for the best. My passion, interest, and love for it contributed to my hard work, dedication, and desire for the best. Generally, this tells me that as a student I am genuinely interested in Mathematics and that I can work hard for the best. More importantly this says that as a citizen, or generally a person, my desire for the best comes from my love for it and as I love my country, I want what is best for it, the people, and the future.

With that, I believe that when I get the opportunity to vote, I will be able to make the right choice. I know that choosing the right candidate would be a big decision and a process of really getting to know the candidate, their advocacies, platforms, and plans for the future. I would apply the hard work I put into this subject in researching the candidates. As I have strived for the best in math rooted in my love for it, I strive for the best for our country and the future generations for I've learned to love it more and more, allowing me to vote wisely. Additionally, I personally experienced what it is like to be passionate about your work and love it. So, I would want our future leaders to feel the same in leading the country as I have felt with mathematics because I know that this would fuel them to execute their plans. All these actions I will be taking in order to vote wisely all root in the fact that I love our country and I want nothing but the best for it. All in all, I have realized that behind everything at its best, there is love which boosted the actions made. This is what I experienced in the subject and I believe that this is also significant in the real world.

I create Given that most of the people that I know from my old school and here in Ateneo are studying the same concepts I am, Math, more specifically Basic Calculus, was more than just a subject. I think that part of why I wanted to master the lessons was for me to be able to share what I learned and help others. In relation to this, this quarter, I realized that math was my way to connect and reconnect with others. It may seem odd as it isn’t a direct connection or application, but it is truly how I made the most out of math. Moving forward, unfortunately, not everyone enjoys and is interested in math as much as I do. This is why I was able to apply math outside my class. Because not everyone is like me, I was able to reach out or lend a hand with regard to Math to those that needed it. Most of my friends are from different schools and

there is no doubt that they have difficulties with the subject. Towards the end of the quarter, we were studying integrals already yet they were still learning limits which, somehow I have already mastered. At this point, they were asking for help which I gladly gave. I sent them my notes on the lesson and even tried explaining it to them. Since we were all busy and we didn’t talk as much, this gave way for us to reconnect. Although most of our conversations are just me explaining to them a particular lesson or method in solving, we would talk more often now and check up on each other more. Aside from reconnecting with people that I know, I was also able to use math to make new connections and strengthen them especially within the ASHS community. As I have mentioned most of the people I know have the same subjects and difficulties,

which is why there were times where someone would reach out to me or One way I was able to make a new connection was through STEM Excel. As for the new found connections I have made here in Ateneo, sharing the same struggles with them, especially in Mathematics, paved the way for us to strengthen our connection. Like how I reconnected with my friends from other schools, I was also able to create and strengthen new connections by lending a hand or asking for help myself.

Overall, as Basic Calculus and any other subject requires us to connect our previous lessons and even values, applying these lessons outside my class, these allowed me to reconnect, and make and nourish new connections. The main reasons being that I somewhat enjoy math and we all have the same struggles in terms of lessons (especially limits) which allowed me to reach out to them.
