Humble Heroes We all know that children who are sick, hurt, grieving or have special needs, are the true heroes of the world. But what if you could make their day by helping them meet some of their own personal heroes? The Humble Heroes is a group of volunteers whose goal is to lift the spirits of these children by visiting local hospitals and grief centers while dressed as famous superheroes. The Staten Island-based organization is run through a popular local charity, the Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund. “From acting

out skits and coloring with kids, to a simple high five and wave, the Humble Heroes inspire those young warriors to continue facing their battles,” reads their mission statement. “It is our ultimate duty to bring smiles to such resilient kids by taking their icons and making them a reality. Because they are the REAL heroes.” Annadale dad Kenny Restrepo, who serves as the resident Batman for Humble Heroes, talked to Staten

The costumes are all custom made by members, and Restrepo says he used his art skills to impress his way into the group. “A friend of mine, one of the founding members, was telling me about the organization and what they do, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I asked to see pictures and I told him I was very interested in becoming involved,” he said. “I started making a Batman costume, and my brother-in-law, Gaspere Randazzo, also wanted to volunteer, so I made him a Robin costume. The guys were very impressed by the costumes so they invited us to come to a visit -- and we fit right in. It was an amazing experience and the kids looked so happy. I remember overhearing two of the kids saying ‘that’s definitely the real Batman!’ It felt so fulfilling to be able to cheer them up.” Humble Heroes started two years ago on a whim, after a group of friends, dressed up for Halloween as Power Rangers, were asked to pose for a picture for a child in a nearby hospital by the child’s mother. The group then made the decision to visit him in person and thus Humble Heroes was born. Restrepo says they’re planning to visit a school for children with special needs soon and hope to book future dates at many other schools. “We’re open to any location where there are kids that we can help bring a smile to,” he said. If you would like to make a donation to Humble Heroes, go to binifund.org/humble-heroes or link directly to the page on siparent.com. You can also keep up with their latest adventures and newest costumes on Instagram at @humbleheroes_ny.

everything you need to know about your community Holiday Cheer The holiday spirit was alive and well this year as some of the littlest Staten Islanders worked to bring cheer to children who spent Christmas and Hanukkah in Richmond University Hospital’s pediatric ward. Daisy Troop 5376, and Girl Scout Troops 5554 and 5332 learned of the need for toys and sprang into action, collecting over 60 gifts for the children. When asked what they thought of the toy drive, the girls all agreed that it felt very special to be able to give sick kids something to help them feel better. In addition to the Girl Scouts’ generous collection, Beeline Entertainment donated a life-size Mickey Mouse to bring cheer to the young patients, while The Emergency Children’s Help Organization provided new DVD players for every room in the pediatric ward of the hospital.

Groundhog Day at the S.I. Zoo Is winter over yet?? Just ask Staten Island Chuck, the Staten Island Zoo’s famous resident groundhog, who will once again emerge from hibernation on Groundhog Day to make his annual, seasonal prediction. According to tradition, if Chuck emerges from his burrow and fails to see his shadow then spring will arrive early. However, if he comes out and is frightened by his shadow, causing him to return to hibernation, then winter will persist for six additional weeks. With Chuck’s impressive 80% accuracy rate, we hope he doesn’t see that shadow! Want to meet him? The Groundhog Day event at the zoo is free and open to the public, with gates opening at 6:30am on Groundhog Day (Friday, February 2), ceremony starting at 7am and Chuck’s prediction at 7:30. This year’s ceremony will feature a special appearance from Patrick Raftery Rock-a-Silly Band and the P.S. 45 choir.

refashionNYC With spring cleaning on the horizon, you might want to start looking into ways to donate your old clothes. refashionNYC is a partnership between the NYC Department of Sanitation and Housing Works to make clothing donation as easy as possible, through a convenient in-building service. The program is 100% nonprofit; all proceeds from donations support the charitable mission of Housing Works to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS. No donated items are sent to landfills. They will accept both damaged and reusable clothing of all kids, accessories, linens, clean rags and clothing scraps. Bins are available to residents of apartment buildings with over 10 units, office buildings, commercial businesses, schools and institutions. Link to a signup form and more info at siparent.com.

LEGO LIVE NYC If your kids love building Legos as much as you hate stepping on them while barefoot, then have we got a must-attend event for your February break. LEGO LIVE NYC will feature 65,000 square feet of Lego experiences, with millions of bricks for visitors to build, create and play with. LEGO LIVE will include a range of interactive zones, each offering a distinct brick-themed experience. Visitors will also get to witness professional builders and workshops on the live stage, and much more. LEGO LIVE NYC will take place in Manhattan’s Lower East Side at Pier 36 on 299 South Street February 16-18. Go to siparent.com to link to more info.

february 2018

Don’t save your red clothes for Valentines Day! Friday, February 2 is National Wear Red Day, a day designated by the American Heart Association every year to raise awareness of heart disease in women. Heart disease affects more women than men and is sometimes called the “silent killer” because its symptoms often go unnoticed. Heart disease and stroke kill one in three women, yet the disease is 80% preventable. Show your support for the cause by wearing red on February 2 and sharing your pictures on social medial using the hashtag #GoRed. You can also make a donation to the cause. Visit siparent.com to learn more about National Wear Red Day.

everything you need to know about your community on Staten Island. You can donate to Toys 4 Autism by visiting their page at www. gofundme.com/toys-for-autism or their website, www.toys4autism.org. You can link directly at siparent.com, or link to an Amazon wish list featuring specialized toys that will be shipped directly to the organization. You can also learn about the importance of specialized toys for children with autism at the Toys 4 Autism website, which thoroughly explains how these toys serve to help children reduce anxiety and concentrate.

suprisingly complicated Sometimes you just have to laugh. That seems to be Guzun Kurun’s mantra while raising twin teenage boys with autism. The Tottenville mom’s new Staten Island-based web series, Surprisingly Complicated, portrays the many comedic highs and lows she faces in her own daily life while raising her two autistic sons, Adem & Eren. South Shore Rotary members with John Jr. and P.S. 37 students

Toys 4 Autism

“We always tried to do different things with the boys. We aren’t afraid of their behaviors when we’re out,” Kurun explained. “So we took them to Ikea, Universal Studios, Harry Potter rides – and we ended up shutting down the rides. It was a miserable experience; but at the same time it was funny.”

Christmas is done and gone, but it’s never too early for a charitable toy drive especially the kind that puts smiles on the faces of children with special needs. When John Louis Sublett started his charity, Toys 4 Autism, this past Christmas, he was so thrilled with the donations he received that he is getting a head start on next Christmas. With the help of his son, John Jr., as well as the South Shore Rotary Club, he was able to fill 180 gift bags with specialized toys and distribute them to the students of P.S 37, a school for children with developmental delays. John Jr., who is now 34 and has autism, was once a student at the school. According to Sublett, the day he distributed the toys to the children (accompanied by Santa, of course) was one he will never forget. “All in all it was a great day for everyone, the smiles on the children’s faces when they received their gifts was awesome,” he remarked. “But besides the kids, you could see the smiles on all us adults that were there to share some love.” Sublett says this was his first drive but it certainly won’t be the last. He aims to far surpass his charity’s success next year, hoping to fill a gift bag for all 400 children in his son’s school and possibly for children attending other special education schools

The cast from the web series, Surprising Complicated Kurun, who worked for CNN and has some experience script-writing, decided to document these experiences into a pilot for a show, and now has a full season of episodes waiting to be filmed. Her goal is to feature children on the spectrum in every episode. Parents with children on the spectrum will surely find the show very funny and relatable, but Kurun noted that all parents will enjoy the humor and the frustrations that go along with raising children in general. The first episode is currently available, a hilarious account of the family’s decision to use marijuana to offset the effects of their son’s medication. You can watch it on Amazon Prime, YouTube or Vimeo, or also link directly at siparent.com or surprisinglycomplicated.com. You can also link to their social media channels at siparent.com. The next episode, titled “Dentist, Haircut, and Waffle Embargo” is set to air in February. We can’t wait to see it!

Building Empathy, Equity and Excellence! Staten Island, District 31 Secures Upwards of $1 Million in Grants At the December Community Education Council 31 meeting, I spoke about our work revolving around

District 31 is honored to be awarded this competitive grant opportunity. This will allow our District to build upon our work, increasing Empathy, Equity and Excellence in our school community. Our District was already engaged in work that aligned with the objectives of the Carnegie grant, incorporating the $150,000 Chancellor Carmen Farina provided to support our work focused on the My Brother’s Keeper initiative.

The work our District Leadership Team and community partners are engaging in is something that will foster collaboration and capacity building. Superintendent Anthony Lodico has led our efforts in partnership with Betsy Dubovsky, Executive Director of The Staten Island Foundation in securing over $800,000 in grant funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York and other community partners for “Achieving Transformational Educational Outcomes.”

In October, Superintendent Anthony Lodico chaired our first meeting of the Empathy, Equity and Excellence working group. The group is comprised of students, educators, parents and community members. Matthew Lattimer, Conciliation Specialist with the U.S. Department of Justice is facilitating the discussion for the group.

Empathy, Equity and Excellence throughout the district. This work centers on diving deep in discussions about those often difficult and uncomfortable topics involving race, gender, and socio-economic status. These conversations can have us reflect on ingrained perceptions we may have from past experiences and relationships.

Staten Island District 31 was one of several school districts from across the nation competing for this grant, eventually beating out 2 other finalists from California. This work will partner our Staten Island District 31 Educators and Community members with the consulting firm FSG. FSG will develop a training and interactive deep analysis plan incorporating their “Systems Thinking” framework. “Systems Thinking is not ‘thinking about a system.’ Instead, Systems Thinking is a framework and set of tools that help people observe and understand the interdependencies that exist within a complex system and focus on higher-leverage change strategies. It helps individuals consider the connections between inner (personal mental models) and outer (dynamics between stakeholders) change; elevate the importance of transforming relationships within a system; examine how the structure generates the behavior observed, and shift attention from reactive activity to addressing deeper sources of problems.” – FSG This work will consist of community-member working groups, leadership training sessions and community engagement to help build on student outcomes regardless of race, gender or economic conditions.

This monumental work will expand from the planning committee and working group to a 3-day workshop in late January into February. The workshop will bring together approximately 75 Staten Island stakeholders representing parents, students, teachers, principals, and community and faith-based organizations. The workshop will focus on promoting opportunities for Pre-K through grade 12 students in our community. The event will be co-led by facilitators from FSG, PolicyLink and the Systems Leadership Institute, three nationally recognized organizations that will help our community dig into key aspects of leadership development and creating sustainable change. We are looking forward to building on this exciting work! valentine’s day: a valentine’s day family playbook

10 ways to say “i love you” Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples in the heady throes of young love. Deliver sweet somethings to every important person in your life. Here’s the plan for a perfectly playful V-Day for the whole family.

Create a Sweet Tweets jar. Decorate a mason jar for your child. On slips of paper, write adjectives or short sentences in 140 characters or less that describe traits you most appreciate, admire and love about him or her. Hunt for Cupid’s treasure. Challenge your kids to a scavenger hunt. Give them clues on a trail of paper hearts or cupid cut-outs. One clue leads to the next until they find a Valentine’s Day surprise. Check online for scavenger hunt clue ideas.

Toy with chemistry Put candy conversation hearts to the test. Gather vinegar, salt water, tap water and bleach (with adult guidance). Place a candy heart in four bowls. Ask your child to hypothesize about what will happen when each liquid is dropped over the candy. Using an eye dropper, test her theory. How does the candy react to different liquids? Did your young chemist’s predictions prove true?

16

“Attack” them with hearts. On each of the thirteen days leading up to Valentine’s Day, mom of four, Alexis Sanchez, posts a heart-shaped note on her kids’ doors each night after they go to bed. By Valentine’s Day, their doors are covered. “Usually it’s just characteristics I see in them or ways that they’re kind to others. They really love this, and I even found my eight-year-old kept all his hearts from last year in a special drawer so that’s pretty awesome,” Sanchez says, whose other children are 10, 6 and 1. Send a singing telegram. Video your preschooler singing a ditty like: “I made this little valentine; Of red, white and blue; I made

this little valentine; Especially for you!” (point at the camera). Email the file to grandparents or another relative your youngster is crazy about. Customize cards for classmates. Bypass the usual cartoon paper postcards and publish simple photo cards with a themed border. Last year, Sanchez attached a small bottle of bubbles to her daughter’s cards, which read “Friend, you blow me away!” Snow them over with hearts. Make a snow globe for your special someone out of a 16 oz mason jar. Hot glue a small animal figurine and/or a miniature bottle brush tree to the inside of the lid. Put red and silver glitter and foil heart confetti inside the jar. Fill the jar with water. Put hot glue around the inside of the lid and screw it on tight. Wrap a ribbon around the bottom of the jar. Attach a tag with a love note that says, “There’s snow one like you.” Treat them to a hearty breakfast. Surprise your kids with heart-shaped cinnamon rolls. Instead of rolling your cinnamon roll dough from one side to the other, roll it on both sides so that each side meets in the middle forming a heart shape. Slice and bake. Serve juice out of dollar-store champagne flutes. Make a fruit salad. Cut fruits like apples, strawberries,

not-too-sweet valentine’s day treats Isn’t it ironic that Dental Health Month falls in the same month as Valentine’s Day? This year, mix in some savory with your sweet treats. You’re sweet enough already! Here are some festive foods for your February 14 celebrations that won’t break your dentist’s heart.

heart-shaped fruit salad Ingredients

• watermelon • fresh lychees • raspberries • strawberries

heart-shaped roasted beets and potatoes Ingredients

Directions:

1. Peel lychees. You can substitute for melon balls if you can’t find fresh lychees. 2. Wash strawberries and raspberries and cut strawberries lengthwise. 3. Slice watermelons and use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut hearts. 4. Mix fruit in a bowl and enjoy! From adesignerlife.net

more recipes

• 3 large potatoes, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds • 3 large beets, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds • 1/4 cup olive oil • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 1 teaspoon pepper • 2-4 cloves of garlic, grated • A sprinkle of cayenne pepper (optional) • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 400ºF. Using a small heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut potato and beet slices into hearts and place in a bowl with the olive oil, salt, pepper and garlic. If desired, toss in the scraps as well. 2. Toss until vegetables are well coated, then transfer them to a sheet pan and spread out into a single layer. Roast in the oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until browned and crisp. Flip twice with a spatula during cooking for even browning. 3. Remove the mixture from the oven, toss with parsley, season to taste, and serve hot.

heart-shaped pepperoni pizza Ingredients

• pizza dough, pre-made • 1 cup tomato sauce • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded • pepperoni (as much as you like) • 1 tablespoon cornmeal (optional)

Directions:

1. Separate pizza dough it into 4 equal parts, and shape it into hearts. They don’t have to be perfect! 2. Use a small cookie cutter to make pepperoni-shaped hearts. 3. Top dough with sauce and cheese, and then the pepperoni hearts. If you put some cornmeal on your baking sheet your pizza won’t stick. 4. Bake in a 450-degree oven for 12 minutes until the crust is set and cheese is bubbling. From melo-drama.com

10 skills to know before age 10 GUIDING YOUR TWEEN TOWARD RESPONSIBILITY

By the time your child turns ten, you may have started teaching them responsibilities, assigned weekly chores, and started discussing whether they are old enough to stay home alone for a few minutes at a time.

24 10 skills.indd 2

february 2018

www.siparent.com

In the middle of their tween years, ten year-olds are ready to begin taking on more responsibilities. Krystal Laws, mother of seven, says “Parents can think about where they would like their kids to be at age 18 then go back every few years making goals to work up to independence as an adult. Having a vision for where you’re headed really helps in knowing what to work on at various ages.” What are some basic skills kids can learn before ten? Here are some ideas: Basic household tasks Teach your child some basic household tasks. If you are busy, out of the house, or under the weather, your child should be able to make himself a sandwich, pack a sack lunch for school, and be able to prepare a small meal in the microwave. It is also good to teach your kids how to do laundry, run the dishwasher, and how to clean up a spill. Safety Keeping our kids safe is a huge priority for parents. At a young age, we begin to teach our kids how to safely cross the street, bike and road safety, and to be aware of strangers. By ten, parents should take it one step further by teaching kids about internet safety and what to do in case of an emergency. “I want them to be safe mentally and physically,” says Lisa

Parrish, mother of three. “They should know how to use the phone, procedures for being home alone or in emergencies, safe touch, and that no means no.” Kids approaching ten should also know basic first aid and when to call 911. Proper hygiene & self-grooming Ten year-olds should understand the importance of good hygiene and how to care for their own body and hair. Frequent showers, proper face and hand washing, and wearing deodorant are good habits to get into as the changing hormones of the teen years approach. Budgeting and saving Ten years old is a great time to introduce basic budgeting skills. Kids can learn to pick something out that they would like to purchase, research the cost, and begin saving for it. This helps teach them delayed gratification, the value of the dollar, the reward for hard work, and also how to budget and save for things that they want. This skill will be necessary as they plan for larger purchases in adulthood. Problem-solving skills When presented with a problem, children often look to the adults in their lives to solve the problem.

1/24/18 5:23 PM

LIPM

Follow us on social media

feature / tweeens problem-solving skills learned early will benefit them as they grow older. You can also present your child with different scenarios and ask them what they would do. Ask your child - If you get lost, what should you do? What if you forget your lunch at home? What if you see another child getting teased? If there is a fire in the house, what should you do? Working through different scenarios and practicing problem-solving skills will help your child build confidence for when they are faced with a problem. Value of hard work Kids need to know the value of hard work, especially as they head off to college or into the workplace. Even middle and high school require a higher level of study habits. Developing good study habits also helps kids learn that their dedication pays off when they receive good grades because of it. To prepare your child for the workforce, assign chores that work towards a family goal, like putting in a garden for everyone to enjoy, or saving up allowance to work towards something they would like to purchase will show them the long-term payoff of hard work. Proper etiquette and speaking skills Ten year-olds should know how to treat other people respectfully, approach adults in public, have proper phone etiquette, know how to shake hands, and express gratitude when someone gives them a gift or does something for them. With so much electronic communication, we must teach our children that when having face-to-face conversations, it is polite to use proper language rather than text speak. “Kids this age should know the Golden Rule and treat others the way they’d like to be treated.” says Laura Fenner, mother of four. Ten year-olds can build confidence in this area by practicing public speaking and participating in sports or recitals.

Caring for others Kids learn a lot when given the responsibility of taking care of something or someone else. Examples could be a pet, garden or plants, or helping with younger children. This helps teach them responsibility and selflessness. Outdoor skills Kids this age can be taught outdoor safety. Fire safety, how to use a map and compass, what poison ivy looks like, and water safety are all good examples. Teaching them these skills encourages them to find outdoor activities that they enjoy. Again, as we face competition with the screen, teaching kids how to be safe when pursuing outdoor activities, may open a love of the outdoors that they have not yet experienced. Healthy habits The importance of a healthy diet and routine exercise is never too early to learn. While they may not be preparing entire meals at age ten, they do need to know that potato chips are not a well-balanced lunch. Kids should also be able to listen to their bodies so they can tell you if they are unwell and what is wrong. Healthy sleep habits and a good diet can help them perform better in school and improve their moods. Kids should also be able to manage their emotions and calm themselves when needed. Consider these skills as just a guideline, since every child and every family is unique. You may find that in your family you value certain skills over others, or that some of these were learned some time ago. “Be flexible with your plan to teach life skills,” says Laws, “Everyone learns at a different pace.” By Sarah Lyons, a wife and mother to six children ages 3 to 12 years old. She tries to teach her kids these skills they can use as they grow and become more independent.

getting kids to brush their teeth How to Teach Kids Proper Dental Health

Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents, who know the importance of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, there are various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care.

26 Dental Health.indd 2

february 2018

www.siparent.com

• Start early. Begin cleaning kids’ teeth as soon as the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a soft-bristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. • Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, so use that adoration to your advantage by making teeth-brushing a family activity. Get

down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, divert their attention with conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. • Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While always

sticking with products recommended by your child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. • Don’t forget flossing! Soft, sticky foods are commonplace in young kids’ diets, and these can promote decay.

feature / dental health month Even well-intentioned gummy vitamins can be sources of dental decay. Oftentimes, these foods become lodged between the teeth or on the surface of molars. If left in contact with the teeth for too long, food particles become a source of carbohydrates for oral bacteria, and cavities may appear as a result. To remove food particles from between the teeth, children must floss, advises the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists. Parents should help young children to floss since the dexterity required to wind the floss around little fingers and then thoroughly clean the teeth may be discouraging. There are children’s flossing helpers with handles to make back teeth more accessible and promote more effective flossing. Kids who shy away from flossing may be more likely to use a children’s water flosser. In lieu of string floss, a water flosser uses a pressurized stream of water to dislodge food from between teeth. Although a water flosser may be more messy, children may enjoy the opportunity to “play” with water and the cleaning sensation provided. • Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments

go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

Fabulous

February

February may be short on days, but there’s no shortage of themes for this versatile month– from Groundhogs to Valentines to Lunar New Year to Presidents– it’s packed with topics all month long!

Additionally, this year is the XXIII Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, so if your family is interested in sports, geography, politics,TV, competitions, or just plain good old entertainment, here is a built-in conversation starter for 17 days and beyond! The United States has approximately 240 athletes competing in the games, ranging from familiar sports such as figure skating and hockey, to sports we usually only see televised at Olympics time, like biathlon, luge, bobsled, and curling. Opening ceremonies are February 9. Go Team USA! Don’t forget February’s much-anticipated Winter Recess when public schools in New York are closed from February 16th until 25th. What will you do with the kids for 10 days to keep the cabin fever at bay? Well, you’ve come to the right place for ideas and suggestions. Flip through the pages in this issue of Staten Island Parent and you’ll see that there’s tons of fun crammed into the 58 square miles that is Staten Island. Try something new or go with an old favorite. As always, our public library branches have programs for all age groups—including yours! If you want more, check out the family calendar beginning on page 51 and online at siparent.com and you can fill the winter break with fun without ever leaving the Island! If your spirit animal is more the hibernating type, embrace it! Hunker down in your “den” and plan a day of nesting with the kids. There’s no need to sacrifice fun– siparent.com/winter has lots of ideas for winter-themed crafts and indoor games, kid-friendly recipes, and kids’ jokes (Q. What do you get when you cross a snowman and a vampire? A: Frostbite. Ok, we know it’s corny, but it’s sure to give a 5-year old a good laugh!). Brrrrr! It’s colder than a polar bear’s nose outside! Are you and the crew brave enough to brave the outdoors? Here is a list of places you can get to within two hours for a “cool” day trip to make the winter break a memorable one – not far enough to experience a climate change, but so much fun you’ll forget about the cold.

Olympic Effort Gets

Brandon Penny to the Games

Brandon Penny (center) with 2014 Olympic figure skating gold medalists Meryl Davis (left) and Charlie White (right)

Brandon Penny will not take home a gold medal when he returns from PyeongChang, South Korea, following the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in February. But he already has something better— a new lease on life. Penny, a Staten Island native, will be attending his third Olympics — one Summer Games and now two Winter Games — working for the United States Olympic Committee. He is the USOC’s manager of digital media content development, which basically makes him the managing editor of all editorial content on the TeamUSA.org website. But with the countdown to PyeongChang very much on this past summer, the 27-year-old received a surprise smack in the gut. With nothing to indicate there was anything amiss, he learned his kidneys were functioning at 13 percent and he would need to undergo a transplant. “June 13, 2017 — I went for a routine dental cleaning,” said Penny, a graduate of PS 32, IS 34 and Staten Island Tech. “They took my blood

pressure and refused to treat me because it was too high.” He went back to work, but was convinced by co-workers to go to the emergency room, where his BP was “240 over something.” That led to some tests and the shocking news that his kidneys were failing. “It was scary,” he said. “A huge shock. I was not experiencing anything doctors said I should have been going through. I did not know how to react.” Fortunately, he received plenty of support from his USOC colleagues, and his parents, John and Debra Penny of Richmond Valley, who arrived in Colorado Springs from Staten Island the next day. Just as fortunate, he wouldn’t have to undergo dialysis and a potential five-year wait on the transplant list because he quickly found a match from the “tons of people who signed up to be tested” as donors. His mom, an elementary school teacher who now serves on the city’s Teachers’ Retirement System pension board, was the first to be tested and was found to be an excellent match.

Brandon Penny (left) interviewing Olympic Gold Medalist Dick Fosbury (right)

“Mom has always been an incredible person and mother,” Brandon said. “It still amazes me and I’m incredibly grateful she was willing to do that for me.” Debra described the ordeal as “an out-of-body experience. I didn’t think that it was really happening. I cried for days. My sisters had to hold me up as I walked into the transplant center. But then I went into warrior mode and was determined to donate my kidney to make Brandon better.” On July 25, a four-hour surgery resulted in a successful transplant. A little more than a month later, Brandon was back to work.

Working for the USOC is a dream job for Penny. He never got into the “traditional” sports growing up, but he dabbled in swimming for the Great Kills Swim Club, fencing at Staten Island Tech and gymnastics. He took an interest in Olympic sports, a passion that was fed through his family’s many trips to Lake Placid, where Team USA men’s ice hockey miracle gold medal run took place in 1980. At Emerson College in Boston, Penny did a 90-minute special feature for the college TV news station about 2010 Winter Olympics. Two internships with the USOC during college led to a short stint with NBC Olympics in Stanford, Connecticut, after graduation in December 2011. He then joined the USOC just before the 2012 Summer Games, although not in time to travel to London. His job in South Korea from Feb. 9 to 25 will be to make sure the stories of Team USA and its athletes — stories of triumph as well as disappointment — are detailed on the USOC website. He will lead a team of writers and reporters through their coverage of the Games, and write some himself. “We’ll be telling our athletes’ stories to and getting news to Team USA fans through our website and mobile app,” he said. “The athletes’ back stories, their struggles of what they’ve gone through and have had to overcome — all of that. “The best part of the job for me is being able to tell these stories, to work with our athletes and get to know them personally, and bring the news to the fans.”

That’s a huge responsibility when you consider TeamUSA.org gets about 1.5 million viewers each month, and that its social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram total more than 8 million followers. Penny’s life is a bit different now than it was before the transplant. He takes 19 pills a day, down from about 40, to make sure his body doesn’t reject the kidney. He’ll be on such medication the rest of his life. He has to wear a medical mask when he travels to protect himself from germs. Brandon was at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in San Jose in January and had the unique experience of having former Olympic stars search him out to see how he was recovering. He said, “Having these gold medal winner ask how I’m doing is pretty neat.” So is getting your life back.

Local sportswriter Joe LoVerde coached youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. He’s now joined by his son, Mike, a sandlot baseball player on the Island and a senior at Lyndon State College in Vermont, where he’s on the baseball team and majors in Electronic Journalism Arts. Dear Teacher.indd 2

Question: Our state has opted out of using the Common Core Standards. Instead, the schools will be following our own state’s standards. What do you think the differences between the two standards would be in mathematics? – Inquisitive

One criticism of state math standards is that they are a mile wide and inches deep. The Common Core Standards generally have far fewer broad statements and are more specific. They concentrate on a clear set of math skills and concepts so students will be learning math in a more organized way. And the Core Standards make sure the students are learning math in each grade so they can succeed at a higher level.

Answer: There may or may not be a substantial difference between the two sets of standards in math. In fact, the Common Core Standards were based on standards of the individual states. Before Common Core, states covered different math topics at different grade levels. What Common Core does is put all the states using them on the same page at the same time.

Question: Last year I clocked the talent show at my children’s elementary school at 90 decibels! Not one child was wearing hearing protection, including my own, only because I had never expected the performance to be so loud! I won’t make that mistake again. The school made no attempt to lower the volume or provide hearing protection. The issue was not top of mind for them. On the other hand, there are

Plus, it is believed that the sequence of math topics in Common Core is mathematically coherent and will lead to college and career readiness. This may or may not be true of math standards for individual states.

1/25/18 2:58 PM

strict rules about wearing helmets when riding bikes on school trips. How loud is too loud? – Concerned Answer: The rule of thumb is that prolonged exposure to any noise at or above 85 decibels can cause gradual hearing loss. This is the level of heavy city traffic or a school cafeteria. At 105 decibels, the maximum volume of MP3 players, some hearing loss can occur within 15 minutes. At 110 decibels, the level of a rock concert or loud sporting event, damage can occur after one minute. We live in an incredibly noisy world, and one that seems to get noisier all the time. Whether it is eating in the school cafeteria or going to a rock concert, a large sporting event or even many restaurants, noise levels are often so high that they can cause hearing loss. And hearing loss is permanent. There is currently no cure, although many foundations are working on one.

musik2kids@gmail.com

Teach your children how to protect their hearing. Many protection options are readily available, such as wearing earplugs or earmuffs, or using volume-limiting headphones in noisy environments. In a noisy environment with a sound level measurement of 85 decibels or louder, your children should always wear hearing protection. And they can protect their own hearing when it comes to personal audio devices by simply turning down the volume and limiting listening time.

Question: My second-grader loves reading e-books far more than print books because they have so many fun, interactive features. Are there any downsides to her love of e-books? – Book Lover Answer: One important question comes up: Is your child really reading the e-books, or is she spending more time playing with the interactive features? One study by Carol Smith and Jordan Schugar showed that children spent as much as 43 percent of their time using e-books playing games rather than reading. You should observe what your daughter is doing with e-books. Is she spending most of her time reading them or playing games on them? If she is spending more time playing games, different e-books should be selected. You want to find those that force her to have more interaction with the actual text. And that interaction should occur on the page that she is reading rather than on a different screen. Plus, these interactions should be brief. Otherwise, she is likely to lose the thread of the story. There are other negatives to children reading e-books over traditional print books. One is the “read to me” option. It can be helpful when children meet words that they do not know. However, if used too frequently, it can stop children from using important word attack skills, like sounding out a word. Also, if children use the dictionary feature too often to learn what words mean, they are not learning to use the context of the story to get the meaning of the word. Unfortunately, not all e-books are of the same quality. Parents need to look for those that feature interaction with the text. And parents should also talk with their children about the e-book stories that they have read just like they would talk to them about print books.

the proper care of teddy bear Prevent Spreading Germs this Flu Season That’s exactly what teddy bears can do, says a study from Vanderbilt University.

Nothing is more comforting to a sick child than snuggling up on the couch with blanket and a favorite teddy bear. But what’s not so comforting is when teddy bear brings the flu virus to preschool or daycare the next day.

The study focused on hospitals that allow familiar, comfort-giving teddy bears to accompany children during visits, specifically surgeries. Researchers wanted to know if the toys unintentionally contribute to surgical-site infections (SSI). Indeed, stuffed animals and other “comfort” items, all showed bacterial growth when tested. And viruses proved just as invasive, surviving up to 24 hours on the surface of toys in another study. Stuffed Toys Miss Out On Personalized Attention Raggedy stuffed bears keep watch over our toddlers during cold and flu season’s runny noses and puking tummies. But rarely do they get the follow up care they need. As studies have shown, 3 out of 4 teddy bears don’t get washed after a child is sick. Even worse, 1 of 5 bears have never been washed at all. Plastic and wooden toys have a better chance at getting washed, or at least cleaned with disinfectant wipes.

What can parents do? Parents can send stuffed toys through the laundry. A run through a laundry wash/dry cycle, followed by 24 hours in a sealed bag when completely dry, effectively sterilized 79 percent of the stuffed animals tested. In other tests, machine washing plush toys using anti-bacterial laundry soap killed 99.9% of bacteria. Authors recommend allowing toys to dry thoroughly to avoid mold growth. Ways to Limit the Spread of Germs during Cold and Flu Season Avoid letting your kids play with plush toys at daycares, doctors’ offices, and church nurseries. Use soft blankets as an alternative to a stuffed toy. They can be washed more easily between uses. Limit playdates and sleepovers during cold and flu season. Use washable area rugs in place of, or on top of, carpets. Wash sheets more frequently. Wash stuffed animals weekly.

No parent plans to raise an unkind, much less a cruel, child. In fact, most of us put considerable effort into polishing our children’s manners and teaching them to respect other people. Unfortunately, many of those lessons are being undercut online. Our culture, as a whole, is going through a rude and disrespectful era, a problem that seems to be amplified in and by online communication. Recent research by the Pew Internet and American Life Project reported that one in four adults have experienced online harassment and 66% have witnessed it. The numbers are even higher for young people. The Pew Study also pointed out that there’s widespread disagreement about what kinds of speech are unacceptable and what kinds of responses are appropriate. Some argue that in a free society, people have to be able to say whatever is on their minds, no matter how vile, and other people should just “shake it off.” Plenty of others feel that the culture itself is being degraded when citizens mock, deride and attack each other. They favor more involvement by service providers and even law enforcement. Many people oscillate, defending strong language when it’s used in defense of ideas that matter to them and criticizing it when it’s used by opponents.

Civility in the culture isn’t likely to be restored unless individuals commit themselves to respectful communication regardless of the venue. Parents can play a part by helping kids think through what they experience and do online. Sometimes that may mean encouraging kids to protect themselves by disengaging from conversations and even communities in which abusive language is the norm. Other times parents may want to support children who want to take a stand on behalf of peers who are being mistreated. (Iwitnessbullying.org and kindness.org provide specific ideas and kid-friendly materials that can be deployed in the battle against online harassment in all its many forms.) Before they can engage in that kind of advocacy, kids need to be grounded in the fundamentals. These principles may seem a little old-fashioned, but they aren’t obsolete. They survive because they are the basis for healthy, respectful relationships at home, in school and eventually in the workplace and the larger community. • No slurs of any kind—ever. Make it clear through your rules and your own habits that you have zero tolerance for words that denigrate people because

of their race, sex, ethnicity, disability or sexual orientation. • The pain of others isn’t funny. Steer kids away from television shows, movies and online videos that ask them to override their natural feelings of compassion and laugh at someone else’s misfortune.

• Don’t spread rumors. Teach kids not to repeat—or forward—unkind things they hear about other people. This is rule is especially important if, for some reason, they don’t especially like the other person.

• Appreciate privacy. Help your child understand that a message or photo sent by a friend should be treated as confidential. Online communication should not be forwarded or posted without permission from the person who sent it.

In a secure & nurturing environment, our multi-sensory, language-based curriculum stimulates development & encourages parental involvement.

• No tantrums. Offline, if your child doesn’t like something another person does or says, they can express their opinion but they aren’t allowed to scream and curse. A dispute online is no different. No ranting. No offensive language. No personal attacks.

• Full & half day program ages 2-5 • Flexible schedule & extended hours

• Be careful about humor. Offline, sarcastic comments are often accompanied by a smile or a laugh so the other person knows you’re not serious. Online, it’s much harder to differentiate between a comment that’s meant to be funny and one that should be taken seriously. Emoticons and other visual cues may help but they, too, can be misinterpreted.

• Diagnostic Evaluations • Full, Half Day & Integrated Classes • SEIT • Round-Trip Transportation

• Think twice about insults. Everyone seems to use them as a way of being clever. Some parents even tease their kids with put-downs. The question we all have to consider is why it’s amusing to undermine another person’s self-esteem. Online, especially, it may be time to revive the old-fashioned rule: If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.

• Don’t press send. A time-honored way of venting is to write a nasty letter—and then tear it up. Suggest that when your child is upset with someone online, he or she write out all their hostile feelings and then press delete instead of send. That way, he or she releases the emotion without hurting anyone else.

Perhaps the most helpful thing parents can do is help children visualize the person on the other end of online communication. Imagine saying the same thing face to face. What feelings would the other person have? What expressions would be on his or her face?

Now, ask your child to turn the conversation around. What if another person said to you what you were thinking about writing in a text or posting on Snapchat? How would you feel? What would you want to do? These questions are, of course, a new way of getting kids to think about the very ancient and universal moral rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” This simple principle survives because it helps people recognize cruelty and practice kindness—two capabilities that are crucial in every human interaction regardless of where it occurs online or in the three-dimensional world.
