LOVE IS IN THE AIR!
M
y son’s first crush took place in the third grade. I helped him make the object of his affection a beautiful card for Valentine’s Day, and his admiration continued for about two full weeks (he got over it after she was mean to his friends in the schoolyard one day). Young love can be so sweet! But it can also be brutal, if unrequited. With Feb. 14 approaching, we’re sharing some tips for parents on helping their child through the ups and downs of their first crush on p. 28. My daughter has yet to admit to having a crush on any of her schoolmates, but she definitely falls in love with every animal she meets! If your kids prefer a Valentine of the furry kind, maybe it’s a good time to adopt a new pet. You’ll find a list of local animal rescues on p. 34 to help you in your search for a new family member. What’s Happening Staten Island?

RENOVATED NORTH SHORE PLAYGROUND IS NOW OPEN City officials and community members gathered recently to celebrate the renovated Bobbie Lewis, Jr. Playground, formerly the Mariner’s Harbor Playground. The newly renamed park honors local resident, Bobbie Lewis, Jr., who was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Brooklyn in 2019. Lewis, Jr. hailed from Mariner’s Harbor and was a CYO referee with a passion for basketball. He became a local basketball star while playing for Port Richmond High School. 10 February 2022 • siparent.com
He died at age 51. “Bobbie was a positive influence on so many of our youth. He was passionate about the game of basketball and always willing to share his time and energy with anyone interested in the sport,” said city council member, Debi Rose. “This beautiful playground is truly a fitting tribute to Bobbie Lewis.” The transformation of the playground is part of the Community Parks Initiative—the city’s parks equity initiative that has invested nearly $1 billion to revamp parks in underserved communities. in 1986 in honor of the ninth borough president, celebrates the civic-mindedness and tireless energy of individuals or organizations that work to help community members in need and improve Staten Island. Singleton received the award for his community service. Principal at the school since 2017, Singleton works with community partners to provide books, haircuts, electronic devices, and more for children in need. “I would have never expected to receive this award because it’s not about me, it has always been about the kids of my school,” said Singleton, who grew up on
the island’s North Shore. “I hope to be an example and a positive role model as my students follow wherever their dreams lead them.” Singleton began his career with the Department of Education in 1999 as a drug intervention specialist at Grady High School in Brooklyn. He eventually became a classroom teacher in 2004 at P.S. 57 in Park Hill and has held various positions in several schools on the island, including P.S. 78 as assistant principal. This was Oddo’s last time giving out the Maniscalco Award before leaving office, making way for the island’s current borough president, Vito Fossella.

h, Jackie. My sweet, innocent Jackie. I assure you, as a fellow parent constantly bemoaning my kids’ laziness and complete lack of upper body strength: No, you are not alone. My kids are the very definition of useless. Sure, they’ve made progress in some areas. They can dust, if my wife and I threaten them enough. The 11-year-old can handle the vacuum and occasionally charge his devices, the 5-year-old can properly return the juice to the fridge and wake the dead with his soul-piercing shrieks. They have skills. But none of their skills have anything to do with yard work or manual labor of most kinds. It’s not all their fault. In the old days, half the reason you had kids was to get extra farm and factory hands. Nowadays, the only thing my kids use their hands for is to swipe to the next TikTok video. Times have changed, and unfortunately it’s on us to instill a healthy work ethic—and to get them to do the backbreaking chores they’ve made us too old and too tired to do ourselves. Little kids get some slack. I can’t blame my 5-year-old for not helping; the shovel is taller than he is. Plus, it takes a solid 5 months to get him dressed in snow gear, at which point the snow has melted and summer has arrived, so he’s not really the issue here. But my 11-year-old? He can handle a shovel. Not well, but that’s fine; sometimes we just need to see a little effort! It’s the thought that counts, right? He puts plenty of thought and effort into his Minecraft builds! He’s downright enthusiastic about decorating his virtual properties, but ask him to hold a bucket of salt so I can sprinkle some around and he starts complaining before I can even finish my request. The way I see it, the key to getting kids to do chores is simple: threaten and bribe. Or, if you’re a good parent, you can just incentivize their work. That’s why I’ve decided that the next time there’s a snowstorm, I’m going to bury his tablet and his Nintendo Switch in one of the drifts. If he wants to play video games, he’s gonna have to break a sweat first. Why Preschool Is So Important Experts discuss the importance of early childhood education.

ids play together, sit in a circle with their teachers, and sing songs, eventually enjoying a snack. Maybe they discuss the weather or the calendar or learn about letters and numbers. From the outside, you’d be forgiven for seeing preschool as a nice-to-have, rather than a necessity—and, for those not in public pre-K programs, a potentially expensive option. Indeed, some parents have argued that preschool is a glorified day care, that anything taught there can be learned at home. There is, however, more going on in that classroom than the untrained eye might observe. Educators and child development experts say early childhood education offers kids advantages long after they leave the colorful walls of their preschool classroom. Research shows that the benefits of preschool are tangible and visible in more ways than one. Preschool not only provides more opportunities for children, it helps them learn how to face social interactions, according to Rina Patel, a former preschool teacher and director of the early childhood enrichment program Book Nook in Manhattan. There are, as a result, big differences between at-home learning and in-school learning. “There’s a different expectation at home when there is a parent with a child versus a teacher with a child,” Patel says. “Children do naturally develop skills, but at home they are only exposed to a 20 February 2022 • siparent.com
certain amount of materials, toys, or learning products. School is open to a whole different variety of learning materials.” TRAINED TEACHERS AND GROUPS OF PEERS Schools provide teachers who are professionally trained to be molding young minds and are equipped with certain skills parents alone may not have. An important aspect of in-school learning is instilling in kids the ability to interact successfully with other people. It may seem very straightforward, but getting along with others, especially at 2-4 years old, is not so easy. Being in a classroom with multiple children their own age allows children to develop social and emotional skills that cannot be learned solely at home, Patel says. At preschool, children become accustomed to being in group settings, separating from parents, and making decisions on their own—even if those decisions are as simple as, “Do I want to build with LEGO or finger paint today?” All of the social experiences children undergo in preschool contribute to their overall confidence, according to Tovah Klein, Ph.D., author of How Toddlers Thrive and director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development. “People think of it as the ABCs and 123s, but it’s much, much more than that,” Dr. Klein says. “Children gain a lot of confidence continued on p. 22

by being able to handle themselves away from their parents and then reuniting with them later in the day.” Preschool classrooms also teach kids about resiliency and curiosity, Dr. Klein says. Being able to handle disappointment and moving on from it, learning to be proud of your work, and the ability to make decisions all play into a child’s curiosity and desire to learn. PREPARING KIDS TO LEARN Beyond the realm of confidence and social skills, preschool prepares children for life in other ways, such as getting them ready to learn in school. Today, skills such as reading are generally being taught earlier, prompting one study to ask, “Is kindergarten the new first grade?” With so much more expected of children in kindergarten, early education becomes crucial as preparation. Attending preschool has been shown to improve children’s IQ, their receptive and expressive vocabulary skills, and early reading and math skills. By enrolling your child in a preschool program, you are preparing them to acquire academic skills that they will be expected to use as early as kindergarten. Studies show that a crucial part of preschool education lies in stimulating interactions between students and their teachers. By supporting their students emotionally and academically, teachers help children learn to develop skills, respond verbally and physically, and enjoy learning. Young children often struggle with the transition from a play environment to a learning environment, which can cause a “learning anxiety,” or fear of learning, according to Patel.
By introducing your child to this environment as early as preschool, you eliminate the anxiety early, preparing them for future learning. TEACHING KIDS ROUTINE Preschool also helps children develop and understand the concept of a routine. The school day is structured, which helps acclimate children into a daily routine and a learning environment in a gentle and enjoyable way. Being accustomed to a routine helps children prepare for higher levels of school and a professional life, Patel says. “When I was in a kindergarten classroom with children who didn’t go to preschool...they were experiencing social anxiety and learning anxiety simply because they didn’t know what to expect,” Patel says. “Preschool fills those separation and learning anxieties, so your child has a better idea and is better prepared.” In the process of preparing a child for a routine, parents likewise become accustomed to enforcing and sticking to that routine. The earlier you start bringing your child to a structured program every day, Patel says, the earlier you learn the importance of an everyday routine for your child. An aspect that is also beneficial for parents is, the earlier you begin, the earlier you can decide what works for you and your child and what doesn’t. By sending your child to preschool, experts say, they will be provided the resources for proper academic preparation, and social and emotional development. y son’s first crush was Victoria. It was love at first sight when they met in kindergarten, and it continued in elementary school. Then Titanic came out and their relationship sank too—until my son declared his affection on national television. During an appearance on the show Kids Say the Darndest Things, he said in the cutest little 6-year-old voice that he loved Victoria, but then explained: “She dumped me…because she loves Leonardo DiCaprio.” After this public proclamation, Victoria agreed to be his girlfriend again. I worked with her parents to set up lunches, movies, and playdates—until they broke up again, of course. Before I could blink there were others that caught his eye and captured his heart. There is a great innocence and excitement in that first love. It gives parents cute stories to share and kids a chance to learn about feeling a special connection to another. “Young children have experienced crushes for a long, long time. psychiatry at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill-Cornell School of Medicine in Manhattan. “But a young child’s experience of ‘love’ is not the same as an adolescent or adult.” First loves for kids younger than 11 are usually innocent but parents may be shocked. That’s what happened to Queens mom Julie Schwietert Collazo when her then 6-year-old daughter announced to a family friend that she had a boyfriend. “I was stunned, not just because she told our friend rather than her dad or me, but because, well, a boyfriend!” she says. “How did my baby grow so fast?” She found love notes. One professed “I love you,” and the other was a drawing of a boy and girl that read: She likes that boy. He likes that girl. After a little mom reconnaissance, Schwietert Collazo discovered her little one liked a nice boy at school. When she asked her daughter about the note, the 6-year-old ripped it up and told mom she wasn’t supposed to find it, so Schwietert Collazo gave her the space to reveal this at her own pace—while keeping an eye on things.
FIRST LOVES AND CRUSHES FOR KIDS AGES 4-11 First crushes are not really “romantic.” Keep young crushes in perspective—and don’t equate them with romantic love. “The stories of young love are more about strong connection in a sibling/friendship way,” says Darby Fox, MSW, a New York City child and adolescent family therapist. “Young love is not romantic love. Romantic love is really later on, although kids might describe their feelings that way. Real feelings of love are more for twelve-year-olds.” Love is all about attachment. The way children experience attachment has everything to do with the kind of nurturance and support received from caregivers. “Attachment is a powerful connection that has physical and emotional bonds,” says psychologist Deborah Serani, Psy.D., a professor at Adelphi University in Garden City. “They go from mom or dad and move toward sister, brother, grandparents, aunts, and uncles—and others in their circle of life. Attachment to others may be mild, or even casual. But then there are those that stir emotions and physical feelings that make the child brim with adoration. So, when a child pronounces love for another, it’s really about the powerful connection that’s rooted in attachment.” Children mimic the world around them. It’s natural for kids to pick up their cues from others in their home, and from media and culture. “Children grow up seeing how their parents and other couples act, as well as watching hours of cartoons, movies, and even regular programming that demonstrates how a loved one is cherished,” Dr. Serani says. “So, kissing, holding hands, professing love aloud, or making
or giving gifts is part of the attachment celebration.” Let it play out. While you want to monitor blossoming affections, you don’t want to stifle it or make your child uneasy. “These are lessons the kids need to learn for themselves, in terms of the relationships and experiences they have,” says Jane Greer, Ph.D., a New York-based relationship expert and author of What About Me? Stop Selfishness from Ruining Your Relationship. “There’s no need to intervene, unless your son or daughter is involved with someone who’s lying, cheating, stealing, etc. If they are a bad influence, that’s when parents can get involved.” It’s okay to encourage your child. Parents may be reluctant, but it’s healthy to support children in feeling a connection to others and at the same time teach them to be discerning. “If they like this person, there must be attractive characteristics about them,” Dr. Greer says. “Help them learn to evaluate others and show them what qualities they should look for in another person.” Never make fun of young love or crushes. Older kids or unthinking adults may turn a first crush into a big joke and make light of it. This will make a child feel humiliated and belittled, Dr. Greer says. “You want them to feel secure and confident in their choices of friends and crushes,” she says. “If you have concerns, raise them in a thoughtful and respectful way that enhances their self-esteem and helps them feel good about their choices.”

ESTABLISH TRUST FOR THE TWEEN AND TEEN YEARS At some point your little ones will grow, hormones will kick in, and romance and sexuality will be a natural part of their interests. How you handle early crushes can help establish a sense of trust for those tween and teen years, says Jody Ripplinger, MA, LMHC-P, a psychotherapist at Manhattan’s Citron Hennessey Private Therapy and a Brooklyn mom of three. The best strategy is to listen to your children. “If my ten-year-old daughter came to me to say she was in love, I would first of all become really curious about the who, what, when, and
where of her experience, especially listening for what ‘being in love’ means to her,” Ripplinger says. She admits her next impulse would be to give advice: “You’re too young to be in love!” This is a completely normal reaction from any parent. But, she says, if you pull back and try to assess what kids really need and honor their feelings, you have a much greater chance of gaining their trust down the line when the stakes are higher. Sweets to the Rescue 15-year-old Amanda Murray doesn’t let her diagnosis stop her from doing what she loves— baking and helping animals. BY BARBARA RUSSO
A
manda Murray was born with ataxic cerebral palsy, a condition that causes trembling throughout the body and balance and coordination problems. She doesn’t use a wheelchair, but some tasks can be challenging, such as writing and other things that require fine or gross motor skills. Despite her diagnosis, the Tottenville High School sophomore is a very happy kid with a huge heart, according to her mother Diana Perone-Murray. In fact, Amanda, who loves to bake, made a difference in her community recently by organizing a bake sale to raise money for local animal rescues. “Amanda is an animal lover. We live in a house full of animals with three dogs and three guinea pigs,” explains Diana, who also has a 9-year-old daughter named Brianna.
WHEN ONE PASSION BENEFITS ANOTHER
In November, Amanda got to work on launching her fundraiser. She spent a week in the kitchen following recipes and whipping up sweet treats such as pumpkin bread, banana bread, crumb cake, chocolate-covered pretzels, and chocolate-chip cookies all to help shelter animals find their fur-ever homes. Diana and support workers from A Very Special Place, a Staten Island-based organization that helps adults and children with disabilities, were there to help, but all the culinary credit goes to Amanda. The bake sale was held at the Murrays’ South Shore home in early November, and it was a success. Amanda raised a total of $530 for the Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Brooklyn and For Blake’s Sake, an animal rescue on Staten Island. “We had a great turnout,” Diana says. “That first day, we

actually ran out of items. So that night, we baked more for Sunday.” It’s not surprising the bake sale sold out so quickly. Amanda made signs and posted them throughout the neighborhood to advertise the fundraiser, while Diana promoted it on social media. So, what is it about animals that Amanda loves so much? Her answer is one that undoubtedly rings true for many people. “I love that they are calming, and they make me feel relaxed,” she says. “It makes me feel very good to help them.”
BAKING UP SUCCESS
Amanda plans to have another bake sale in the spring. Meanwhile, she just started her own small baking business called Rosie’s Sweets that helps keep her baking skills sharp. It’s still new, but she already had several sales in November. It’s not so much about the sales as it is the skills she’s learning while managing her own operation, according to Diana, “She did well over Thanksgiving, and made herself a little money,” Diana says. “I’m trying to teach her business, such as how much money you’ll need and how much things will cost. Things like that.” Amanda thrives, has a 94 average in school, and works hard to overcome the challenges set forth by cerebral palsy. Diana adds that a lot of Amanda’s success is also due to the work put in by a team of professionals who help her. “She has a one-on-one para who is very familiar with her. She has a very good team of people,” Diana says. “The credit definitely goes to all of us. I can’t take credit for all of it.”
