TWO STATEN ISLAND EDUCATORS HONORED WITH PATRICK F. DALY AWARD Borough president James S. Oddo honored Natalie Capraro and Deirdre DeAngelis D’Alessio last month with the Patrick F. Daly Award, which recognizes outstanding educators in the community. Capraro, a special education teacher at P.S. 31, and D’Alessio, principal of New Dorp High School, received the awards at a virtual ceremony held Nov. 1. The Patrick F. Daly Award is named after a principal who was gunned down 29 years ago in Red Hook, Brooklyn, while searching for a student who had left the school building. The award was established shortly after Daly’s death to honor his

legacy of service to the community. Two awards are given out each year: one for a principal and one for a teacher. This year’s awards honor educators who went

above and beyond during the challenges of the pandemic, according to the borough president’s office. “It is with great joy that we at Borough

RE-ENVISIONED INITIATIVE KICKS OFF AT CONCORD HIGH SCHOOL Concord High School announced the continuation of its Re-Envisioned Initiative that offers residents of the community additional pathways to continue their education. Borough Hall began the initiative in 2019, with Concord High School principal Michael Sobel, District 31 Executive Director Chris Anzalone, District 79 superintendents, and other education officials. The shutdown of the schools amidst the pandemic had taken some toll on the timeline, but the implementation had been brisk and well-paced, according to the borough president’s office. Re-Envisioned programs include culinary, cosmetology/natural hair design/ barbering, graphic arts, and carpentry. Also underway are the Young Adult Borough Center on the North Shore and the New York Center for Interpersonal Development providing advocacy, college, and career planning, as well as paid internships to develop skills and competencies needed to be successful in high school, postsecondary environments, and the workplace. Adult Education also began in October, encompassing high school equivalency, college readiness, and career opportunities.

On Staten Island, small teams covering 13 distinct territories will take to counting. You can even do something as easy as monitoring backyard bird feeders! Hall continue this award to honor Mr. Daly’s legacy, and sacrifice, as well as recognize outstanding educators in our community especially during a time where so many educators had to adapt during COVID. In the last eight years of my time at Borough Hall, I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to honor many educators who truly make a difference in the lives of Staten Island’s youth,” Oddo said. “I believe Natalie Capraro and Deirdre DeAngelis D’Alessio embody many of the exceptional qualities Mr. Daly had as an educator. Both have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to their students and a love of education and their communities, and I thank them both for their dedication.” Capraro, a special education teacher since 2010, was honored for many achievements, including the leadership roles she took during the pandemic. Always an advocate for technology in the classroom, Capraro took the time to learn new systems and implement them while helping her fellow educators navigate the new digital scape in schools. She created videos and instructions for the families of P.S. 31 to help them access the essentials of virtual learning.

Like Capraro, D’Alessio, who has received many awards in the past, has a reputation for implementing new programs for students and staff. Under her leadership as principal, New Dorp High School has seen consistent improvement in all school data with more than an 11 percent increase in attendance and 34 percent in graduation since 2005, according to the borough president’s office.

NYC PARKS BREAKS GROUND ON ROSEBANK PARK RENOVATION New York City Parks Department broke ground last month on a renovation project for the outdated John E. White Park Playground, Rosebank. The $1 million project will reconstruct the existing playground in the park and feature new play equipment, a spray shower, fencing, pavements, benches, and new plantings. This is the first significant investment the park has received in more than 20 years. As part of the project, the existing sidewalk along Lyman Avenue will be partially reconstruction. The project is expected to be complete by fall of 2022.

The playground is named after Staten Island World War I veteran, John Edward White (1893-1918). Born in Staten Island’s Fort Wadsworth, White served as a trainman for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in Staten Island’s St. George neighborhood. He enlisted in the United States Army to fight in WWl and gave his life assisting in the defeat of Germany. “Today is a great day for the legacy of John E. White. This NYC playground has been a source of joy for countless generations of small children and today’s groundbreaking means that tradition will continue,” said New York State Senator Diane J. Savino. “I am so proud to allocate the necessary funding to update and modernize this park and cannot wait to hear the sounds of children laughing with delight again.”

Ask DadandBuried “The holidays are here, somehow, and that means it’s gift and, more stressfully, gift-giving season. For me and my wife, that is. Our kids don’t do anything. How do I get them involved?” —Richard, Dobbs Ferry

ichard, I feel your pain. My entire fall is overloaded with holidays—my son’s birthday, my wedding anniversary, my wife’s birthday, and then Christmas. When it comes to providing gifts, it all falls entirely on Mom and/ or Dad. When are these damn kids gonna start pulling their weight? To be fair, some of this is not their fault. My oldest is only 11, and it being 2021, he’s no longer allowed to clock in at the factory. Progress is a double-edged sword! My point is, I’m not about to make my sixth-grader break open his piggy bank to buy Mommy a new set of stemless wine glasses for Christmas. My 5-year-old has it easy. In kindergarten, they’ll schedule entire classes around having the kids make their parents gifts. And at that age, nothing more than some handmade trinket or scribbly card is expected—or needed. But that doesn’t last: My 11-year-old’s math teacher isn’t about to spend a week helping the kids make Mommy a macaroni necklace! So my dude ends up being a freeloader, totally relying on me and his mom to provide gifts for everyone. That said, I’m totally with you: My kids need to start participating in the gift process! The solution? I think it’s simply to get the kids involved in the process. Bring them to the mall or spend time together browsing Amazon. Let them choose a couple things, and when they arrive, let them wrap them. That way, they can see the effort, and better enjoy the reaction when the gift is opened. If you really want to get nuts, it might be time to tell them the truth about Santa. It’s cute that my kids still believe that a sub-zero KoolAid man puts all those gifts under the tree, but the real world ain’t so magical. Mommy and Daddy bust their asses all year making sure they can afford the latest toys, and bust their backs all Christmas Eve lugging them out to keep the magic alive. You know what magic I want to keep alive? The magic of my kids thinking about someone besides themselves for once. That’s why I’m sending my Christmas list right to their bedroom, so they can spend a few weeks figuring out how to get their hands on that bottle of Johnny Walker Blue I’ve been dying to try.

Rockefeller Center Fifth Avenue, between 49th and 50th streets, Midtown The holiday season brings to mind a beautiful scene of ice-skating at

Bank of America Winter Village Bryant Park, between Fifth and Sixth avenues and between 40th and 42nd streets, Midtown Bryant Park’s Winter Village is a European-inspired open-air market, with each merchant housed in an individual “jewel box” kiosk. Browse more than 170 merchants from NYC and around the world. After you’re done shopping, take a spin on the ice! Unlike in Rockefeller Center, skating in Bryant Park is free (skate rentals are $15-$45).

There are many places to ice-skate in NYC, but Rockefeller Center is a must-do holiday experience for everyone, whether you’re a native New Yorker, new resident, or visiting from out of town. The rink is open daily this holiday season, 9am-12am. Tickets are $20-54 for ages 6 and older; $8-22 for kids ages 5 and younger.

American Museum of Natural History’s Origami Holiday Tree 200 Central Park West, Upper West Side

Visiting the museum this holiday season? Stop by and see the Origami Tree! As a celebration of the museum tradition that started in the early 1970s, the theme of the 13-foot tree is Gems of the Museum, featuring 50 specially created gold-colored models for the “golden anniversary” 50th Origami Holiday Tree. Among the more than 1,000 origami pieces decorating the tree will be models of dazzling specimens from the new Allison & Roberto Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals, jaw-some pieces inspired by the new special exhibition Sharks, and those depicting iconic museum exhibits like the Blue Whale, Titanosaur, and T. rex. Reservations must be made online (amnh.org). General admission is $23 adults, $18 students and seniors, and $13 kids ages 3-12.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS From the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree to the Seaport’s Menorah Lighting, there’s so much dazzle throughout the city this time of year. Feeling overwhelmed with so many displays to see? Don’t know where to start? These are the must-sees!

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Rockefeller Plaza, between 48th and 51st streets, Midtown The famous Rockefeller Center Christmas

tree lighting ceremony will be held Wednesday, Dec. 1, and the tree will shine bright with more than 50,000 multi-colored LED lights. After the official ceremony, which will be broadcast live on NBC, the tree will be lit daily from 6am-12am for all to enjoy. This year’s tree made headlines as the first Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree to come from Maryland!

Shine Bright at Hudson Yards Between Tenth and Twelfth avenues, from 30th to 34th streets, Chelsea Presented by Wells Fargo, Shine Bright features more than 2 million lights illuminating The Shops, Public Square and Gardens, Edge, and Vessel.

Brookfield Place Luminaries 230 Vesey St., Battery Park City Luminaries, a mesmerizing display of colorful lanterns designed by the LAB at Rockwell Group, returns to Brookfield Place with a new experience called Maestro. It allows visitors to conduct the canopy using a gesture-controlled instrument to display their own unique light shows in unison with holiday music. Maestro runs Dec. 4-7, 11-12, and 16-19, 10am-8pm. For added holiday fun, Luminaries features light shows set to holiday songs at the top of every hour, Nov. 29-Jan. 2, 2022, daily, 8am-10pm.

Sarah Bren, Ph.D., a child and family psychologist in Pelham, says that one of the things parents should expect to see, whether their kids are flourishing with the structure school offers or feeling anxious about the separation it requires, is some degree of restraint collapse. This refers to the phenomenon of kids melting down when they get home after holding it together all day at school. During the day, Dr. Bren explains, “they’re following the rules, they’re doing all the things that they’re supposed to do,” but then there’s a sudden release of those restraints “as soon as they’re home with that safe person.” This can be helpful to remember in the moment when your child’s behavior takes a turn. “The fact that they do it with us, while hard to receive, really shows how safe they feel with us,” Dr. Bren says. “Sometimes us doing a good job looks like our kids melting down with us.”

Adjusting to In-School Learning Tips for helping kids find their footing in their classrooms after a year of remote instruction

he luster of the first day of school has surely worn off by now, and families have settled back into the daily grind— including some facets of pre-pandemic life that we may not have missed, like early mornings and traffic jams. It’s a challenging transition for everyone. Kids who were kindergarten students in the spring of 2020 had only six months of regular instruction before moving into lockdown, and now they’re in second grade. So, it comes as no surprise that some of these kids are showing signs of stress. We spoke with an educator and a psychologist about ways to support your child during this school year.

Talk with your kids.

More importantly, listen. Your first source of information about your child’s life is your child. It’s particularly important now to keep the lines of communication open, emphasizes Amanda Fuhrman, who teaches third, fourth and fifth graders in Edison, NJ. Dedicate time for your kids to talk to you when they know they’ll have your full attention and ask open-ended questions. “They tell you the truth very often when you leave it open for them to tell you,” Fuhrman says. For example, instead of saying, How excited are you to be back at school? Ask: What happened that was exciting today? Follow up by asking them to tell you more, or ask how something made them feel, and don’t forget to thank them for sharing with you. “If we don’t know what they’re thinking, then it’s really hard to help them,” Fuhrman says.

Provide a bridge between school and home.

In anticipation of restraint collapse, Dr. Bren suggests giving kids 20 minutes of undirected time, and your full attention, upon returning home for the day. Put your phone away for these minutes and simply be with your kids, following their lead. “That twenty-minute upfront investment of your time will pay off in spades for the rest of the night,” Dr. Bren says. “You’re filling them up a bit and that’s going to go a long way.”

Create focused opportunities for your child to socialize outside of school.

If your child is experiencing social anxiety after a year spent learning remotely, playdates can be a helpful way to flex those relationship muscles. When using playdates as a tool to strengthen social skills, Dr. Bren recommends limiting them to about 45 minutes and providing the structure of an activity. In these cases, she says, it’s also important to end on a high note. If things are going well, rather than pushing them further, say something along the lines of, “This is so great! Let’s do this again.”

Establish and maintain routines.

“I’ve seen a lot of kids struggle with the structure of school,” Fuhrman says. Accustomed to attending school in their pajamas while lying on the couch, simply getting dressed and out the door is a big change for kids. If getting ready in the morning is a struggle, try making a checklist, with pictures for younger children, of what your child needs to do before they leave the house in the morning: brush teeth, get dressed, eat breakfast, put homework in backpack. This way, instead of repeatedly telling them what to do, you can just ask what’s next on the list. Laying out clothes and even setting the breakfast table the night before can also save valuable early

morning minutes. You can make a similar checklist for bedtime routines. “The more that they’re held accountable at home, the more they’ll do at school,” Fuhrman says. Dr. Bren adds that predictability, routines, and structure can give kids something to hold onto when so much feels in flux. “Think of shaking up a snow globe,” she says. “Anything we can do as parents to give anchors to our kids while that snow is flurrying is helpful.”

Don’t overschedule—leave room for down time.

It can be tempting to sign up for activities every day of the week now that after-school programs are back in session, but Dr. Bren believes it’s best to keep commitments to a minimum. “I recommend parents pick one sport and one other thing, maximum. Don’t feel compelled to over-enrich your child,” she says. Unstructured down time also gives kids a chance to decide for themselves what they would like to do, offering a counterbalance to a day of being directed by adults.

Speech expert Gina-Marie Principe runs once-a-month dinosaur scavenger hunt to help kids with their language skills.

peech pathologist Gina-Marie Principe’s new program to help kids with their speech and language skills doesn’t take place in a classroom or clinic...but in the park! Principe, a speech language pathologist at P.S. 9 in Concord, created Roar with Speech to give kids ages 3-7 tips and tricks for improving their speech and language abilities in a fun and interactive way. It takes place in the South Shore’s Bloomingdale Park and is centered around a dinosaur theme. (After all, what kid doesn’t like dinosaurs?!) “Roar with Speech is an opportunity to have children come together in a naturalistic environment with the benefits of fresh air, nature, and friends to increase their overall speech and language skills with the support of a speech and language pathologist,” Principe says. The program gets kids moving and interacting with others in a fun and relaxed environment. First, each child gets an adorable dinosaur shirt to wear (there’s a T. rex on it). Then, Principe takes the kids on a quest to find dinosaur eggs along paths in the park. Using a map, they search for the eggs, point to the ones they see, describe them, and then celebrate with a story time session once all the eggs have been found. This playtime interaction is not only fun for kids, but a great early-intervention tool for children diagnosed with speech or language disorders. Since children learn language by listening to others speak, Principe will talk to the kids about dinosaurs and the eggs they find and point to. Pointing at something can be difficult for a child with a speech or language disorder. The inability to point is sometimes seen in children with autism spectrum disorder and other conditions that can result in speech or language issues such as cerebral palsy, sensory integration disorder, among others. “People take it for granted, but the action of pointing is so important as a form of communicative intent,” Principe says. “It seems so basic, but sometimes parents don’t even realize how important pointing really is.” A speech pathologist for eight years, Principe started Roar with Speech in July. Although there is no set schedule for the program,

parents and Principe discuss when to meet next in the Facebook group she manages, Your Neighborhood SLP. Usually, they meet once a month on Saturday mornings. In addition to being a learning and development opportunity for kids, Roar with Speech serves as a support network for parents of children with speech disabilities. While the kids participate in the dinosaur activity, parents have an opportunity to share with each other things they might have in common. “I want parents to know that they’re not alone. We can build a safe community for parents and guardians where they can ask any questions they might have.” One thing parents should know is speech and language disabilities in children is pretty common. Nearly 1 in 12 children ages 3-17 have a disorder related to voice, speech, language, or swallowing, according to the National Institute of Health. For Principe, Roar with Speech is a labor love—a way for her to utilize her expertise to help others. There’s no fee to join the program, and it’s open to children diagnosed with a speech or language disorder and their parents. Helping children is one of her greatest passions, Principe says. She feels fulfilled knowing parents trust her to help their child find their voice. “I feel very honored to do the work that I do,” Principe says. “When you work with families during early intervention, they become your family. You build bonds with them and very much want to give them help and support.”

Talk about the nuts and bolts.

Around the holidays there will be excess family in the house, crazy schedules, and more stress. It is a good idea to check in with your nanny a few weeks in advance. Discuss any changes to the schedule, requested time off, and how to handle extra people in the home. In general, open the lines of communication. Find a way to laugh together through this often-stressful time.

It is common for nannies to get a bonus or gift (or both) around the winter holiday season. A small homemade or thoughtful gift from the kids and another gift from you will show your nanny you appreciate their hard work all year long. o you hear those sleigh bells ringing? If you’ve gone into literally any store since the day after Halloween, you know the holiday season has been upon us since then. With the fun and lighthearted feels of the season also comes the stress of entertaining and making sure the family stays happy and satisfied. This month’s column is a mix of things I’m loving for myself, as gifts, and even an idea for an outing.

A family that DNAs together, stays together…or at least finds out much more information about each other than they normally would! I recently sat in on a webinar hosted by 23andMe (23andme.com) and was blown away. One woman shared her story about how the test was the catalyst in saving her life against breast cancer. If you’re already together eating baked ham and apple pie, might as well 23andMe (yes, I made it a verb!) and learn more about the family unit.

If you’ve had enough of looking at holiday lights in your neighborhood and watching Hallmark movies, it’s time to plot an escape from the house. Grab the family and board a Seastreak Santa Brunch Cruise in Highlands, NJ. You’ll travel throughout New York Harbor and pick up two special guests along the way.
