mulchfest 2015 Don’t just throw away your Christmas Tree; “treecycle” it! The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, along with The NYC Department of Sanitation and GreeNYC are urging New Yorkers to participate in Mulchfest 2015, the annual recycling of holiday trees into wood chips that will nourish trees and plants all over the city. Want to chip in? Just drop off your tree at a designated chipping location on January 10 or January 11 from 10am to 2pm. Your tree will be chipped right away-and you can even bring home your very own bag of mulch! You can also bring the tree to select drop-off locations from January 3 to January 11, or simply leave it outside your home for curbside collection between January 5 and January 16. Visit siparent.com for a link to more information as well as drop-off and chipping locations.

The Great Richmond From the torturous traffic jams and hiked-up toll fares to the nagging feeling that we’re the “forgotten borough,” Staten Island’s residents are rarely shy when it comes to complaining. But if you’ve stopped by the St. George Ferry Terminal lately, you might have found an outlet for your frustrations. The Great Richmond is an interactive exhibit created by sculptor Will Corwin and cartographer Neil Greenberg which offers participants a unique opportunity to share their own idealized version of Staten Island. Hosted by the Staten Island Arts Culture Lounge, the exhibit will only be on display until January 5-- so hurry up or you’ll miss your chance to see it! GRAB THE BEST BUYS THIS JANUARY
hopping may be the last thing on the average person's mind once the holiday season has ended, but January may be a great time to go bargain hunting.
S
Though sinking January temperatures can make winter seem endless, retailers already have spring on their minds when the calendar turns, and many use the first month of the year to clear out inventory and make room for spring merchandise. If you're ready to shop, the following items might be available at heavy discounts. · Winter clothing: January can be a great time to get discounts on winter apparel. Sweaters and coats have been on display since September, and stores are ready to start displaying their spring collections. Use that accumulated Christmas cash to stock up on coats, sweatshirts and even snow boots.
JANUARY IS THE PERFECT TIME TO SAVE BIG ON CERTAIN ITEMS!
· Exercise equipment: Many people resolve to get in shape come the new year, so it comes as no surprise that fitness gear and equipment is on sale in January. Look for deals on home gym equipment, workout wear and items for winter sports. If you are in the market for a gym membership, health clubs typically offer discounted fees and incentives to join in the first month of the year. · Home furnishings: Several manufacturers release new furniture collections in February, and retailers must clean out their old inventory beforehand. If you are in the market for big-ticket home furnishings, hold off until after the holidays and your patience may just be rewarded with considerable savings. · Holiday items: Now is the time to stock up on holiday décor as retailers reorganize for Valentine's Day and spring holidays. Take inventory of any decorations that broke during the season as well as anything you are thinking of replacing. Purchase cards, wrapping paper and other holiday items now and pack them away until next year. · Vehicles: January and February can be ideal times to find discounts on both new and preowned vehicles. Drivers may not to want to drive

new vehicles through messy winter conditions, so they will usually wait to buy until spring. Dealerships recognize this and will drop prices on vehicles during the winter to try to entice shoppers to buy. You might find it easier to negotiate a better deal in January and February than you would later in the year when demand is higher. · Big-ticket electronics: January is traditionally one of the best months to buy electronics because this time of year is when the Consumer Electronics Show unveils the newest technology. As people upgrade to new models and systems, last year's merchandise is put on sale. Sports fans also may want to upgrade the size of their televisions now so come February 1st they can watch the Super Bowl in style. · Jewelry: January is slow for jewelry retailers, and that lull can be advantageous to buyers shopping in January. Splurge on jewelry now before prices spike for Valentine's Day. Bargain hunting consumers may want to brave the winter weather and shop till they drop this January, when retailers may be looking to unload inventory as they prepare for the spring shopping season.

Teddy Atlas III Blazing His Own Trail in NFL The little boy and his dad crossed the street from their Sunnyside home nearly every afternoon and headed for the park, the dad toting a large duffle bag filled with all types of sports equipment. They’d play baseball, football, basketball and even lace on boxing gloves and spar a bit. And when they were done playing together, other kids would join in, or the dad would leave and the boy played with friends until his mom called out from their fourth-floor apartment window: “Teddy, it’s dinner time.” It was a ritual except when the dad was away on business— and mom took over. “I was surprised the first time my mom stepped in,” said Teddy Atlas III, the son of famous boxing trainer Teddy Atlas Jr. and Elaine Atlas. “But she would pitch to us, run the bases.” Pretty cool mom. In the years that followed, Atlas spent a lot of time around pro sports, “in the gym, at major sporting events and meeting professional athletes” through his dad’s work in boxing. It’s not surprising, then, that Teddy Atlas III would wind up with a career in sports. At 29, he’s the scouting coordinator for the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League and loving every minute of it. “I get paid to watch football for a living,” Atlas said. It’s a lot more involved than that, but more on that later. Atlas grew up like a lot of kids from local sports families. He played in the Staten Island Boys Football League, the East Shore Little League, the Mid-Island Babe Ruth League and CYO basketball for St. Teresa’s, and wound up on the football, basketball, and baseball teams at St. Peter’s High School. Naturally, Atlas also boxed, trained by his dad. He later boxed a bit at Northeastern University in Boston, where he graduated with a degree in economics. Having interned with the Jets when Eric Mangini was head coach, Atlas found himself with two job offers after graduation: one with an accounting firm and the other in football operations with the Cleveland Browns, where Mangini wound up after being fired by the Jets in December 2008. It was no contest. “Without hesitation,” he said, “I took the job with the Browns.” The hours with the Browns were long; the tasks — like being in charge of locker room music, Gatorade inventory, transportation — were many. But he stayed late on his own time and begged the player personnel guys for more stuff to do. It was a great education, and in 2010 the Browns’ president promoted him to that department. But Mangini was fired after that season and his whole staff was let go. So Atlas took a pile of resumes to the college Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, and gave them out to every general manager and head coach in attendance. Two weeks later the Raiders called him, and Atlas moved to Oakland, where he’s been for four seasons.
In 2013, he was promoted to Raiders scouting coordinator. His responsibilities run the gamut, from coordinating prospects’ evaluations to evaluating that talent himself; from talking to agents of potential free-agent players and working them out. He also arranges the advance scouting reports of teams the Raiders will play each week. “He is a great worker,” Raiders General Manager Reggie McKenzie told The Press Democrat newspaper in California, “and he understands football. And he understands what needs be done. No job is too big for him. Those are the kind of guys you need to have around your team.” Atlas loves all of it. “It doesn’t feel like a job a lot of days,” he said. “I get to watch guys I helped draft. I have a say.” He credits his parents for preparing him well for the challenges and responsibilities of the job, such as “seeing what my father went through to get to the top of his profession, the hard work, long hours and sacrifices he made. And the sacrifices my mother made, too,” he said. He also gives credit to Mangini, who taught him “how to grind,” he said. Atlas, who bears a strong resemblance to his dad, does miss his family — his parents, who now live on Todt Hill, and older sister Nicole, an attorney and part-time boxing judge — and friends on the Island, but is comforted by his parents’ visits and the arrival of fiancée Lana Guzik, a Brooklyn girl, who joined him in Alameda, California. He laments having missed the last six Dr. Theodore A. Atlas Foundation dinners, which honors his grandfather, is run by his dad, brings celebrities to Staten Island, and raises thousands for worthy causes. And in those rare times the job gets him down, Atlas has a good fall- back plan. “I think to myself that I’m not as smart as the other guys; that I never played football on this level,” Atlas said. “But I’m lucky to have the relationship I have with my father. He can motivate anybody.” He also laments missing his sister’s law school graduation and friends’ weddings in order to chase his dream. “I’ve sacrificed so much. I have to make it.” Make what, exactly? Well, there are 32 NFL football general managers in the world. Atlas wants to be one of them. Joe LoVerde has been coaching youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. He’s also a longtime newspaper editor and sportswriter.

Attention
A high-risk pregnancy is any pregnancy in which there could be health problems for mother or baby. And while the term “high risk” sounds scary, it simply means that extra-special attention must be paid to both. In these situations, your doctor may recommend beginning care with a high-risk obstetrician called a perinatologist. A perinatologist’s work is focused on keeping the baby inside for the duration of gestation, if possible. Babies have a better chance of survival if they are born at full term, rather than when they are born prematurely. Which factors can make pregnancy high-risk? Pregnant women with heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, seizure disorders or autoimmune disorders are potentially at risk. Other areas of concern include: • An advanced maternal age of 35 or older • Lifestyle choices like smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and using illegal drugs • A medical history of cesarean, low baby birth weight, preterm birth (before 37 weeks of pregnancy), miscarriage or death of a baby shortly after birth • Underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and epilepsy, or a blood condition, such as anemia or an infection, along with any underlying mental health issue • Pregnancy complications with the uterus, cervix or placenta; severe morning sickness that continues past the first trimester; or situations like abnormal amniotic fluid volumes, restricted fetal growth or Rh (rhesus) sensitization, which occurs when your blood group is different from your baby’s • Multiple pregnancy for twins or higher-order multiples • Overdue pregnancy beyond the anticipated date What steps can I take to promote a healthy pregnancy? • Schedule a preconception appointment. You’ll learn about prenatal vitamins and your ideal pregnancy weight and can discuss any medical conditions

• Be cautious when using assisted reproductive technology (ART). Consider how many embryos will be implanted: Multiple pregnancies carry a higher risk of preterm labor • Seek regular prenatal care. Prenatal visits can help your healthcare provider monitor your and your baby’s health • Eat healthy. You’ll need more folic acid, calcium, iron and other essential nutrients. A daily prenatal vitamin can help fill in any gaps • Gain weight wisely. A weight gain of 25 to 35 pounds is often recommended for women who have a healthy weight before pregnancy. If you’re overweight before you conceive, you might need to gain less weight • Avoid risky substances. Tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs are off-limits — and get your physician’s OK before you stop taking any medications or supplements

What else do I need to know about highrisk pregnancy? Ask your healthcare provider to discuss specific signs or symptoms to look out for, such as: • Vaginal bleeding • Persistent headaches • Pain or cramping in the lower abdomen • Watery vaginal discharge — in a gush or a trickle • Regular or frequent contractions — a tightening sensation in the abdomen • Decreased fetal activity • Pain or burning with urination • Changes in vision, including blurred vision Also, find out which signs or symptoms should prompt you to contact your healthcare provider and when to seek emergency care.

“We’re expecting!” they yell. Cheers and tears of joy typically follow this pronouncement with congratulatory hugs being shared among guests. What was once a traditional moment to be shared and remembered by all present is a fading tradition for many of today’s young couples. Most of today’s announcements are shared in 140 characters or less, with a short video, or image. Just as technology plays a role in our daily lives, technology is being integrated in all aspects of our lives.
IT’S IMPORTANT TO TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT DIGITAL OVERSHARING.
From the moment of confirmed conception, you know the picture of the proud soon-to-be mom sharing her "+" (positive pregnancy test) via social media, we socialize our yet-to-be born children online. Next are the growing baby-bump and nursery preparation images. Until one day, we see what we have been waiting for. The social media post from the delivery room. Sometimes we see a clean, cuddly baby and sometimes we see a crying, still attached, straight-from-the-womb newborn. Every "first" the new bundle of joy has will be documented forever in social media archives with words, sounds, and both still and moving pictures – the first new family photo, first snuggle with the big sister, first bottle, first diaper change, first car ride, first nap on your shoulder, first trip to grandma and grandpa’s, first smile, first giggle, and first swipe on a smart phone or tablet. I know you have seen it; the image of an infant or toddler "playing" on the device du jour. And it doesn’t stop there. We see images of toddlers being potty trained holding an iPhone and images of toddlers or young children

having a "play-date," yet each child is holding his or her own tablet and not interacting with the other child. Or the family is at the restaurant sitting around the table, each one staring at the screens of their favorite device, while all but ignoring the physical presence of their most cherished family members just an arm's-length away. Clearly, as a society we are raising Digital Natives. But we are also raising Digital Naïves. When we hand our youngest children smartphones and tablets to keep them entertained, we are missing something. We are missing the opportunity to ingrain cyber ethics into their developing minds, the minds of the next generation. It is hard to read, watch or listen to news media today without hearing of a tragic or unfortunate event related to technology. What happens if you teach your child about security, privacy, empathy, bully response, screen-time balance, and other aspects of cyber ethics starting at three years old? Perhaps we will raise a generation that knows how to deal with over-sharing on social media, cyberbullying, online enticement of minors, and online trolls.

• First, model appropriate behavior. Yes, that means putting the phone down while at a meal with family and friends and other social situations. But it also means being thoughtful of the pictures you take and post. What do you think those images are telling your children? • Second, talk to your children. Find out what their favorite game or app is. Ask if they interact with other players, and if so, how? Ask questions that help your child learn. For example, instead of telling your child, “Don’t communicate with strangers in an app.” Ask them, “Why do you think it is not a good idea to share information with someone you met through an app or game?” • Third, start discussing the concepts related to cyber security, privacy, and strangers when your child is three years old. Do you know what happens if you start discussing cyber ethics concepts with really young children and continue to reinforce those concepts? The concepts become ingrained in their minds. How awesome is that?! We can increase the chances of success for our children as they grow up in a world filled with technology.

• Fourth, talk to your family and friends and have them help raise their children to be savvy cyber kids, just as you are striving to do. Why? Even if you do everything in your power to educate and protect your child, what happens when they go to a friend’s or family member’s house who isn’t raising their children to be cyber aware? • Fifth, remember there is no silver bullet to raising your kids in a world full of technology. What it takes is your time and dedication as a parent to use the resources available to you. So, put down your phone, look your child in the eye, tell them you love them and give them a big kiss. No technology can do that. LIFE IS GRAND! by Marianna Randazzo
Some Perks for Growing Older If you've made it past your 50th birthday, you have some rewards points to cash in. Financial perks are just beginning, so be aware, if not for yourself, perhaps your parents or elder relatives. There are dozens of ways to save money — including some programs that aren't widely advertised — if you're not too modest to boast about your age. Read on to discover some of the categories in which you can still enjoy a seniority advantage. • Some fast food chain or franchise businesses offer free or discounted menu items to customers who are 55 +; just ask the clerk. Since you look so fabulous, no one is going to offer it to you! (See this column online for a link to local restaurants deals.) • After calling many hair salons seeking a senior discount, I found out that the one my mother and I had been using, Hair Express, has been offering discounts for years at their locations throughout Staten Island. See? You never know unless you ask! • Love to shop? It may be a senior day. A few retailers in Staten Island are: Banana Republic: 10% off (50+) Dress Barn: 10% off (55+) Hallmark: 10% off one day a week (date varies by location) Kohl’s: 15% off (60+) Modell’s Sporting Goods: 10% off. Rite Aid: 10% off on Tuesdays, and Salvation Army Thrift Stores: up to 50% off (55+). • If you are in the traveling mode this year, inquire about senior discounts before booking. American Airlines, American Eagle and American Connection® may offer Senior Fares in some domestic markets for seniors 65+. But, be aware while senior discounts are available through several airlines, these fares do not always offer the best deal. The discount is typically taken off of the full ticket price. • Keep fit. Jewish Community Center of Staten Island offers free programs and transportation for certain programs. Take note that most JCC social services are free and transportation is available for adults 60+ or disabled. The YMCA also offers programs and discounts specially designed for seniors. • Bills. Some utility companies offer a senior discount and some are based on income. Study your bills to see if you are eligible. Property tax discounts are another perk that varies greatly by location, but considering that the benefit is retroactive in many of the places where it's available, it's worth looking into. I mention these discounts for those with parents who are out of state. • AARP. For $16 per year, you will receive a magazine, literature, and nonstop access to special offers on everything from local entertainment to worldwide travel. • U.S. National Parks: $10 lifetime pass; 50% off additional services including camping for folks 62+. • Reduced fare (half the base fare) MetroCards for riders 65+ or those with a qualifying disability. • Cell phone service. AT&T: Special Senior Nation 200 Plan $29.99/mo (65+). Verizon Wireless: Verizon Nationwide 65 Plus Plan $29.99/mo (65+). If you need something simple and inexpensive, consider Jitterbug: $10/month cell phone service (50+). • Groupon is an easy way to get huge discounts while discovering fun activities to do. It’s great fun for gifts, as well. Although this list is not exclusive or all-inclusive, it does offer a taste of what is available. As always, be aware that offers may change. Don’t be afraid to ask for the senior discount, this is our time to get a break! Visit this column online at SIParent.com for links to places listed and to see a more expanded list. NEW BEGINNINGS
>>> MAKE
THE MOST OF THE 1ST DAY OF PRESCHOOL
tarting something new can be a scary experience; especially a toddler’s first day of preschool. Former laze around days of being at home or in a daycare setting will soon be replaced with the educational atmosphere so many children are excited to experience. Why not get your preschooler pumped up about starting school? These nine, fun ideas will get your juices flowing as to how to get your little ones ready for their big day.
S
1. Let your child pick out a new backpack. Having a special ‘place of their own’ where they can put papers and projects will make them feel super special. 2. Attend the open house. Most preschools will have an open house where you can meet the teachers. As ‘little’ as this might seem, it’s actually A FEW TIPS FOR MAKING THE FIRST DAY A BREEZE! a really important step in establishing a relationship between 6. Get everyone on board. Kids get excited when they feel cheered the teacher and child. Great Beginning’s Lead preschool teacher Cathy on by their family. When grandma and grandpa call, have them pump Bolin says, “Meeting the teachers, exploring the room, learning about up your child about how excited they are that school is about to start. the environment your child will be in sets your mind at ease when it is Skype is a great way to involve everyone and have some real face to time to take them that first day of school. I like having an open house face time with your preschooler. because it seems to take the first day jitters away from parent and child and they seem to be comforted by knowing how everything will work 7. One of the most important tips…your camera! Don’t forget to together for that school year.” capture this special moment on film. 3. Help your daughter pick out an outfit for the big day. The night 8. Breakfast. Breakfast. Breakfast. It doesn’t have to be anything before or even a few days before the actual day of school, let her try on fancy but do make it a point to send your preschooler off with a full her clothes (and backpack). This will be sure to get your little one belly. It will help him concentrate and hold him off until snack time. excited for the real day. 4. Go over a ‘mock’ schedule with your preschooler. You might not know what the school’s actual curriculum will look like, but you can give your child an idea of what his morning might look like depending on how many hours each day he will be going to school.
9. Turn up the volume. Music always has a way of getting kids excited. It may even become ‘your’ thing with your child that only the two of you do on the days she has school. Think of it as starting a special tradition.
5. Take your child to get their haircut. Who doesn’t feel better when they get their hair cute? Why not do the same for your daughter? Schedule the appointment about a week before school starts. That way, if the haircut goes south…you have a few days for it to grow back.
Take these tips and try them out before your child’s big day. Preplanning on your part will go a long way to ensure their first day is the best that it can be.

No one under 13 allowed. That’s been the rule on most social media sites since 1998 when Congress passed COPPA, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. The thinking behind the law was that children under 13 aren’t developmentally ready to handle all the complexities of social networking and other online activities. They can’t anticipate the consequences of what they post. They’re more vulnerable to harassment from peers or strangers. And they shouldn’t have their data vacuumed up by marketers. The law is supposed to give kids under 13 time to grow up by requiring websites that want to interact with them to follow strict rules and get permission from parents. Even though there are good reasons to postpone networking on grownup sites, kids have figured out that it’s very easy to lie about age online. Also, many parents regard the under 13 rule as a guideline, more like the ratings associated with movies rather than the law of the land. As a result, millions of children have signed up for accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media sites. When kids clamor for an account “because everyone else is doing it,” they aren’t wrong. A 2012 study by MinorMonitor found that 38 percent of minors on Facebook are now under thirteen. Age restrictions are, of course, arbitrary. Some sixteen year olds are informed enough to vote and some 25 year olds aren’t, but the law doesn’t allow anyone to cast a ballot unless they are 18. Same for driving. Even if you’re capable of handling a vehicle car at 14, you can’t get a license. Admittedly, there are other areas in which age restrictions are taken less seriously. Very few young people wait until 21 to take their first sip of alcohol. And some parents reason that, if they are going to drink anyway, they might as well do it at home where they can be supervised and won’t be tempted to drive. Similar logic seems to govern attitudes toward social media. Parents figure that, if they help a child set up a social media account, they can at least keep track of what they are doing. In some families, that may be true. And, yet, there are still compelling reasons to hold the line on the Under Thirteen rule. Parents should consider all of them before letting a child sign up for Facebook, Instagram, Vine, Tumbler, Twitter, Snapchat, or any other social media site designed for adults.
Lying. Fudging your age may not seem like a big deal. Most adults eventually decide that it’s OK to deviate from the truth now and then, especially to spare another person’s feelings. Children, however, need a great deal of experience with telling the truth if honesty is to become their default position. Allowing—or encouraging—a young child to lie about age opens up questions about truth and trust long before children are ready to think clearly about them. If you don’t want your
child to regard truth as optional, it may be unwise to make exceptions too early.
Laws. The under-thirteen rule brings websites into compliance with laws to protect children from predators. Some people believe the law could be improved, but that’s not necessarily a justification for breaking it, especially since you probably want your child to comply with other protective laws such as those that prohibit the sale of cigarettes or liquor to minors. If a child has permission to disregard age rules about social networking, will he or she feel free to click through other legal barriers such as the “you must be 21 to enter” warning on sites that feature pornography? Risks now. Research suggests younger social media users are more vulnerable to harassment in part because they have fewer tools to cope with online aggression. In addition, kids may see content, including advertisements, that parents would rather they not see. Because they are curious and less guarded, younger children are also more likely to click on malware, malicious software that takes control of a social media account to collect data or send spam. Risks later. Once Facebook users turn 18, they are subject to adult rules—anyone can search for and message them, and they’ll see ads for products considered suitable for adults including gambling, liquor, diet products, and dating services. A child who shaves three years off her age will be exposed to all of this when she’s 15 instead of 18. Alternatives. They do exist. A number of engaging social networking sites have been designed specifically for children. Yousphere, Kidzvuz, Frankentown, Fanlala, and Fantage are just some of the websites that offer children under 13 a safe place where they can experiment with sharing, chatting and blogging. All of these sites require verifiable parental consent, and many have monitors or filters that keep kids from saying and doing things they might regret later. Kids who learn the basics on these sites will be better prepared when they enter the rough-and-tumble world of adolescent social networking. (If you decide that a child under 13 would be better off on one of these sites, Facebook makes it easy to deactivate an underage account at www.facebook.com/help/contact/209046679279097.) The world of social media changes fast, and there are rumors that Facebook is considering a “with parental permission” category for its users. Until that happens, parents of children under 13 need to think carefully about whether early social networking supports or undermines their values. Kids, of course, will often push to do things before they are ready. And it’s easy for parents to feel pride when a child seems precocious. The truth, however, is that childhood is not a race. There’s no prize for finishing first, and social media may be one of those places where just a little more maturity can make a very big difference.

COVER STORY 6 Signs You Need a Break From Being Mommy • You’re not sure what you’d want to do, given time alone. • You can’t remember the last time you had the house to yourself. • You’re surprised to hear your given name. • You could practically live out of your car with all of the food, clothing, and gadgets in there. • You don’t close the bathroom door any more. Why bother? • You still carry a diaper bag, even though your kids have been potty trained for years. For a touching look at the power of being called by your given name after years of being “Mommy,” check out the Japanese YouTube video “Call Her Name” by POLA (with the closed-caption feature turned on). http://youtu.be/oiF_qeICoLU.
While in college, Michele Kus walked out of a jazz band audition, vowing never to play music publicly again. Burnout had pushed her over the edge. Twenty years later, after seven years as a mom and the birth of her third child, she was exhausted from parenting and in need of a territory to call her own. Unexpectedly, she found herself being drawn into playing keyboard at her church. This time music became a lifeline. “The music is fully mine. It is me being fully me. It is not something I do for my children or for my husband; in fact, they must make sacrifices for me to do it,” Kus explains. At the beginning when we are establishing a family, we adopt our new roles wholeheartedly, even calling each other “Mommy” and “Daddy.” But as the kids grow and we never hear our given name, it can be discouraging. Limiting our identity to one role has the potential to build resentment. And it can diminish our ability to be our best as a parent. Want to be a better, more fulfilled mom? Try one or more of these seven ideas for reclaiming yourself as a whole person:
1. Establish a ‘no kids zone’ in your house. They may follow you everywhere (including the bathroom), but that does not mean you don’t
50
JANUARY 2015
www.siparent.com
deserve a space of your own. Even a chair or nook designated off-limits to everyone but you can provide a respite when the troops are restless.
2. Spend time around people who don’t know your children. It’s natural for the majority of our associates during the child-rearing years to be those who play a role in our children’s lives: parents of playmates, fellow PTA members, neighborhood moms. However, this limits us to being identified as somebody’s mom. When you engage with others minus the kids, you have the chance to express another side of yourself. This can be as simple as going to the gym or a Pilates class once a week. 3. Accomplish a personal goal. We often have the sense that the world drops off at our doorstep; that we have to put everything on hold for the sake of our children. But the truth is, our kids can appreciate us more when they see us making time for ourselves too. And fulfilling one goal can lead to other opportunities. For Kus, engaging in music again has spawned new aspirations: making an album, learning how to DJ, writing soundtracks.“It has opened a whole new world for me,” she says. “I feel like I have come back to life, and my husband and kids have seen the change in me.”
MOMMY HAS ANOTHER NAME: 7 Tips for Reclaiming Your Identity Post Childbirth
4. Have a ‘big people dinner’ with just your spouse. Feed the kids a child-friendly meal of chicken nuggets or mac ‘n cheese. Then focus your energy on creating a more sophisticated meal for the adults in the house. Pull out the china and light some candles. Once the kids are all tucked in bed for the night, enjoy a peaceful, uninterrupted meal. One caveat? Try not to discuss the kids over dinner. Instead Kus suggests,“Talk about what gives you energy – your dreams, your desires.”
7. Get physical. Engage in a sport or activity you enjoyed as a youth. Whether through drawing, playing tennis, or playing piano, using your body to do something once very familiar can be emotionally satisfying. Unlike our memory of information, muscle memory (or what scientists call “procedural memory”) sticks much longer-term. The result is that we can connect with our identity prior to motherhood through actions we learned long ago.
5. Find a job. Consider looking for work as your children reach school age. Even a few hours each week can make a difference in your attitude toward yourself.
As many women have found, motherhood can be an all-consuming profession. But it does not have to claim our personal identity too. Given a bit of attention and intention, we can be ourselves and Mommy. . . and we should. As Kus says, “No one can be you. No one carries the unique gifts, skills, passion and heart that you do.”
Kathleen Wolf, a mother of two, started as a substitute teacher before going back to teaching full-time. The results for her have been positive.“I feel more confident and that my kids are not my whole world,” she explains.“I have a purpose again.”
6. Make a date – with yourself. Arrange for someone to take child duty (spouse, grandparent, friend), then escape for a day doing what you like best – reading, napping, shopping. Not sure what to do? Pick a day and jump in the car to see where it takes you. You may be surprised.

CELEBRATE MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY ew people in American history have had as strong an impact on the United States as Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil rights leader who was slain in 1968 at the age of 39. Through his message of nonviolence and civil disobedience as a means to advancing civil rights for all people, King changed the lives of millions. Those changes are still felt today, nearly half a century after his death.
F
Though his death was tragic, King's life remains something to celebrate, a fact recognized by the federal government in 1983, when President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a federal holiday to honor King. Since 2000, all 50 states have observed the holiday, which has been observed on the third Monday of January each year since 1992. For many, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a time to reflect on King's life and advance his message. Children do not have school on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, making the holiday an ideal time for parents to

Renowned for his abilities as an orator, King gave numerous speeches throughout his life, many of which are equally, if not more, moving today than they were during his lifetime. While King's "I Have a Dream" speech delivered in 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial is widely known, King gave many more speeches throughout his lifetime. Such speeches are an invaluable resource for those interested in learning about the life of King and his beliefs. The life of Martin Luther King, Jr. is something to celebrate, and the holiday in his name is a great time to reflect on and study his life while making efforts to improve your community.

Read about the Civil Rights Movement with your children. Thanks to advancements in technology, men, women and children now have a wealth of information at their fingertips. This makes it easy for parents to discuss the Civil Rights Movement, and King's role in that movement, with their children. The older kids are, the more detailed parents can be when explaining the struggles King encountered. Even adults without children are likely to be enlightened by studying the Civil Rights Movement and King's life in closer detail.

Give back to your community. A community leader who made countless sacrifices for both his own community and the nationwide community of those denied their civil rights, King is perhaps best honored by those who make efforts to give back to their communities. Parents can take their youngsters to volunteer and help the less fortunate, be it working at a soup kitchen or an assisted living facility. Many communities host outreach events on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and adults and children can take advantage of such events to honor King's legacy.

Does Your Child Have A Disability or Special Health Care Needs?
Signs Your Child May Have a Writing Problem Question: My kid does not like to write. How do I know if he has a problem with writing? -- Puzzled Answer: The nature of writing is changing, with children texting and emailing friends throughout the day. Writing is a very important part of their lives. Not liking to write does not necessarily mean that your son actually has a writing problem. By studying his written work and talking to his teachers, you can get a good idea of if he actually has a writing problem. If it appears that he does have a problem, it may be related to one of these causes: --Reading and writing are tied closely together. Good readers are usually good writers, and vice versa. Is your child currently reading on grade level? --Can he talk about what he knows but cannot express it well in writing? He is losing points on his work because of an inability to state what he knows in writing. --His writing is unreasonably slow. He is writing a couple of sentences when other students are writing 10 times that number. --He is trying to pack too much information in a single sentence. --He is a perfectionist trying to write the perfect sentence or paragraph. --He is easily distracted after writing for a short period of time. --He avoids writing -- even using it in social media. --He makes a lot of mistakes in spelling, punctuation, and grammar in his writing.
You are not alone! “We care, we’ve been there.”
Improving Children’s Reading Comprehension Question: My son, a fifth-grader, is a good reader; however, he does not comprehend what he has read. He cannot tell you what a story is about after he has finished reading it. How can I help him comprehend what he has just read? -- Needs to Understand

Answer: Reading comprehension is the number one reading skill you want your children to have. Your son does not have this skill, so he cannot be considered a good reader. Here are some things that you can use to help him improve his reading comprehension: --Preview a story and then read it to your son, or have him read it to you. Before reading the story or part of a story, ask him to find the answer to a question about the setting, characters, or problems that the characters are facing. This will help him learn to focus more on the content. --In order for him to learn how to read school textbooks, teach him the SQ4R study technique, which is explained in great detail under "SQ4R" on our website, www.dearteacher.com. It involves surveying what is to be read, writing questions to be answered, reading content, answering the questions aloud and then writing the answers and finally reviewing what has been read. Because this technique involves a lot of steps, your child will need to practice it many, many times to master it. If you use the technique with him, he will master it faster and quickly see the advantage of using SQ4R.
How to Handle a Possible Learning Disability Question: What should you do if you suspect that your child has a learning disability? – Need to Know Answer: First of all, keep in mind that children with learning disabilities usually have normal IQs; their problem lies in how their brains process and use information. They could have an auditory processing, visual perception, communication, or other disorder. There is no one description that describes all children with learning disabilities. If you suspect that your child could have a learning disability, your very first step is to find out as much as you can about what learning disabilities are. This is quite easy to do because many websites will give you good descriptions of learning disabilities. Two helpful sites are: LDonline at www.ldonline.org and the National Center for Learning Disabilities at www.ncld.org. Your second step is to gather as much information as you can about your child that makes you think that he or she may have a learning disability. Then take your concerns to your child’s teacher. If the teacher agrees with your concerns, the next step is to ask for a formal evaluation of the child. Should the teacher not agree, talk with the principal. The next step is an observation of your child in the classroom. On the basis of this report, a decision will be made on whether or not the school will have a psychometrist test your child for a learning disability. When the testing has been completed, you will receive a copy of the results and a meeting will be scheduled to completely go over everything in the written report. At this meeting, you will find out whether or not your chld has a learning disability and if the child qualifies to receive special education services.
Parents should send questions to dearteacher@dearteacher.com or ask them on the columnists’ website at www.dearteacher.com.

Snow days may be coveted by kids (and teachers), but they may not be as beloved by parents who are unaccustomed to having kids home during the week. Working parents whose businesses are open do not have the same luxury as their children to roll over in bed and avoid trekking through the white stuff.
www.siparent.com
· Establish a snow day plan. Parents who cannot take days off from work will need a contingency plan for snow days. Organize a snow day club, wherein school parents rotate taking children for the day. Working parents can reciprocate by taking the school kids on a weekend and letting the other parents have a "date night." · Create a snow day entertainment bin. Rather than having kids spend the day watching television or playing on their tablets, parents can establish a snow day entertainment bin to encourage their kids to make the most of the day

off. The bin can include board games, books, building block sets, paints, and other crafts.
THE VILLAGE PRE-SCHOOL
· Plan for an indoor picnic. Kids will probably want to spend a portion of the day playing out in the snow. After all of that physical activity, they're bound to be famished. Spread a blanket out on the living room floor and enjoy a picnic of sandwiches, snacks and hot chocolate. Kids will enjoy the novelty of eating this way. · Get cooking. Another way to fill the day is to have children participate in making meals. A snowy day is a great time to prepare meals for the rest of the week, as well as tinker with hearty, belly-filling recipes. Older children can help with cutting vegetables and meats, while younger kids can add seasonings to pots and mix ingredients. Involve the kids in choosing which meals to cook. Baking bread or making pizza are fun activities that enable kids to sculpt dough and then eat the fruits of their labors.

· Go the movies. If roads are passable, consider a trip to the movie theater, where you can enjoy a matinee. Bring a few friends along and make it a fun-filled outing. If you are snowed in, you can still enjoy a “movie day” thanks to DVDs, movie channels and subscription services, on-demand, set-top boxes with online streaming TV and media players, and so many more options available today. Break out the popcorn and throw blankets, dim the lights and hunker down with the kids. · Create snow art. Fill squeeze or squirt bottles with some water and food coloring. Allow kids to go out in the yard and create some pictures with the snow as their canvas. · Catch up on cleaning. Cleaning may not be the most exciting snow day activity, but it might be the most productive. Children can spend time sorting through toys and belongings in their rooms. Collect the unwanted items for donation to a charity. · Take a nature walk. Grab those boots and insulated pants and head outdoors. A walk in the brisk, cold air can boost spirits and introduce kids to the beauty of winter landscapes. Take the camera along and encourage kids to snap pictures of their favorite vistas. JANUARY 2015

My family and friends are always good for ordering a batch — after all, everyone LOVES Girl Scout Cookies – but I really wanted to expand and grow my sales this time out. It’s important to my troop because it helps offset the costs of our activities, including our amazing annual Girl Scout camping trip. Plus, I'm older now, so I’m more aware of stories like that one Girl Scout who sold 20,000+ cookies (yes, twenty THOUSAND!), and I’ve read up on her tactics and suggestions for success. Her story inspired me to step up my game. With a little help from my Mom, I put together a plan of action to walk around to the businesses in my neighborhood (we have lots of them in New Dorp), especially those spots that serve refreshments to their customers, like salons, car dealerships, jewelers, banks, etc. We printed out business cards, picked up a book of receipts from Staples (carbon copy and all!), and I practiced a few sales pitches in front of my mom (and the video button on her iPhone). It was all very official; Mom said she was very proud of me for the “career lessons” I was developing. The first time out was nerve wracking, I’m not going to lie. As outgoing as I am, it was difficult to talk to people, even though I was familiar with many of them from the neighborhood. I did get one flat-out rejection (apparently, some law offices frown upon people selling anything, even me — an 11-year-old Girl Scout), but beyond that, everyone was really, really nice. The receptionists at AF Bennett were so excited to see me and place orders, as were the folks in B&A Jewelers, the kind staff at Chase bank, and our friends at the local dry cleaner. The more places I visited, the easier it got. Thanks to reaching out of my immediate circle — even if that was still in the circle of a few blocks from my house – has me well on my way to reaching the goal I set for myself. It’s definitely a good feeling to work hard and then see that pay off! As of this writing, I still have a few weeks to sell, so watch out, New Dorp! I’m coming with lots and lots of sweet temptations! It’s fun being “official,” “professional,” and “organized” – I got those compliments (and more!) along my selling path. This Girl Scout stuff is fun!

FIND THE FUN IN FEEDING is a twelve-week feeding program, utilizing the SOS Approach to Feeding. It utilizes a non-invasive developmental model, that teaches your child how to interact, tolerate and eat a variety of foods in a non-stressful, supportive environment. Parent/caregiver training is a key part of this program to foster success at home. A multidisciplinary approach is also utilized, incorporating the expertise of a feeding therapist, an occupational therapist, a nutritionist, a pediatrician or any relevant professional working with your child.
