Ready, Set, CAMP!
Pro tips on prepping for camp
T
he last day of school is approaching and that means one major thing: It’s camp time! We asked local camp directors for advice on readying kids for the summer adventures ahead. Here’s what they had to say.
Get Prepared South Shore YMCA Outdoor Day Camp at Camp Pouch urges parents and campers to be prepared. Camp directors Mr. Nick and Ms. Meghan offered up the following crucial tips to help ease the process: Parents: • Invest in a reusable water bottle that will last through the summer and would be difficult to misplace. • Apply sunscreen and bug spray each day before the start of camp and pack one bottle of each to assure they can be reapplied if needed. • Be sure to send your child to camp in clothing that will keep them cool. Also, always send them to camp in closed-toe sneakers so they are ready for all types of fun. • Label all of your child’s belongings. With so many campers in camp, it will help to get your child’s things back to them if they lose anything. • Avoid first day jitters by doing a dry run beforehand. Visit the camp at an open house or set up a tour so your child is comfortable and knows exactly where they are going. • Keep the communication open with your
child’s counselors on how they are feeling and anything you think will help us to give them the best summer ever. Campers: • Be willing to try new things and be silly. • Participate! If there is an activity that you aren’t sure about, still jump in and give it a shot. • Leave your phone at home. There are so many fun things happening at camp. Let yourself be present in the moment and enjoy what is happening around you. • Eat a good breakfast so you have lots of energy and are ready to go for the day. • Make new friends and have fun! Have Fun It’s not always easy to get acclimated to new surroundings and people, but there are ways to ease in gently– and huge benefits for doing so. Ian Fiebelman, Director of Black Bear Lake camp (in nearby Millstone Township, New Jersey), says: “Camp friends can be a great addition to your social circle, and these friendships often last long after the summer is over. So it’s worth making the effort to connect with the kids at camp.” He gave these useful tips for new campers on socializing and enjoying the experience.
Get to know your group: Usually campers are separated into groups, teams or bunks. Make it your goal to talk to at least one kid in the group each day. You don’t need to worry about being the funniest, most interesting, or most outgoing kid in the whole camp. Just be yourself, and be open to getting to know the person you’re talking to. Ask which camp activity is their favorite, or ask them about their school. You don’t have to become friends with every person you talk to. For now, just focus on getting to know everyone, and seeing where you have common ground. Listen to others. In a camp setting, you might find that most of your conversations are taking place in a group. That means you won’t have as much control over what’s being discussed, and you may have a hard time steering the conversation away from topics that don’t interest you. That doesn’t mean you should check out if you get bored, or start talking over other members of the group. Instead, listen to the conversation, and respect whoever is speaking. Ask questions, and make contributions when you can. You’ll make more friends by being polite and engaged, than you will by acting rude and disinterested. Be supportive. Whether they’re playing a sport, performing in a play, or working on an art project, everybody wants to feel good about themselves at camp. Being overly critical of someone else can lead to hurt feelings and unnecessary drama. So try to build the members of your group up instead of tearing them down. When it’s appropriate, try offering a compliment, or cheering somebody on. Remember, camp is a place where everyone wants to have fun. People will be more likely to hang out with you if you make them feel confident and happy, rather than stressed or judged. Be a joiner. Don’t be scared to participate in an activity you’ve never tried before. Don’t refuse to be a part of an activity just because it’s not your favorite. You may feel shy about dressing up for theme days or getting involved in events, but you also might regret keeping to yourself too much. The more you join in on, the more opportunities you’ll have to bond with the rest of your camp group. You don’t have to be the best at everything, but if you give it a shot, you’ll have chances to build new friendships and strengthen the ones that are forming. Continued on page 22

College Crash Course How to help your teen prepare for—and succeed in—his first year of higher education
By Caitlin Sawicki Former NYMP editorial intern and a recent college graduate who will begin studying for her M.F.A. in Creative and Professional Writing in the fall. She loves going shopping, and her favorite animal is an otter.
College is a brand-new experience for teens, and while it can be exciting, it can also be overwhelming. The number one thing parents can do to prepare their teen for her first semester is to talk to her and let her know it’s okay to experience a range of conflicting emotions.
K
heatherine Fireborn, parenting expert and head of the Fireborn Institute, which helps students thrive in school through parent education, says teens are likely experiencing a lot of emotions about the transition and tend to focus on the negative. “You really want to talk about preparing for college,” Fireborn says. “It is totally different than anything they’ve ever experienced. Ask what they’re looking forward to, what they’re scared of.” But don’t be overbearing or push the subject too hard with your teen since it can lead to feelings of uncertainty, Fireborn notes. If your teen seems to be uninterested in talking, it can help to share fun stories with him about your college experience and what you were excited for, such as going out with friends during the week or extracurricular activities. Having a few conversations with your teen about what to expect and how to handle herself will go a long way to ensuring she has a successful four years at college. Slowly Letting Go Since attending college is likely the first time your teen will be on his own, give him
more independence this summer. Have her practice for college by letting her have a later curfew or not “checking in” with her as often as you normally would. It could make the transition to being in charge of his own schedule easier. “If they make a mistake, you want them to make it while they’re still at home, so you are there for them and have a non-overbearing discussion about it,” Fireborn says. Advocating for Academic Success Classes and academic work are essential to the college experience—they’re the reasons your teen is there, after all. College courses tend to have more rigorous syllabi than high school, so it can be difficult for some students to keep up. But the scare tactics some high school teachers love to use about professors only caring about their paycheck and not their students are often false and can lead to discouragement. “Professors are not in the business of wanting to fail students,” says Rogernelle Griffin, director of William Paterson University’s Academic Success Center. “If students don’t have a grasp of the material or

raising kids [are] intimidated, they’ll withdraw [from the class] and not be engaged.” But students have to be the one to initiate contact, according to Griffin. A professor won’t know if a student is struggling unless the student approaches her and takes advantage of her office hours. Students who want to do well will be attentive and go after their grade. Parents should encourage self-advocacy and tell their teen it’s okay to ask for help, Griffin says. Many academic advisors and tutoring centers have open door policies and can answer any questions students may have. If your teen is struggling, Griffin recommends asking him, “Have you visited the academic success center?” instead of pressuring him by saying, “I’m paying all this money.” And just talking about it isn’t enough, Fireborn says. It is also important for teens to check their school’s resources as soon as possible, especially if your teen has learning disabilities. “By being aware of what’s offered, if something arises, you know where to go for help,” Fireborn says. In addition to encouraging their teen to speak up for herself, parents should suggest she get involved in clubs and activities on campus. Students who are involved in extracurricular activities tend to get better grades, says Zoe Ragouzeos, Ph.D., LCSW, executive director of Counseling and Wellness Services at New York University. Staying Healthy Talking to your teen about his physical and mental health while he’s in school is important to his success. A good mental health discussion for parents to have with their teen is the importance of eating well, getting adequate sleep, and setting time aside to unwind, Dr. Ragouzeos says. But decide how much you’re going to do for your teen once she’s in college, he advises. There is a line between advocating for your teen and not teaching him how to be his own advocate. Megan Hener, certified personal trainer and owner of Meg Hener Fitness in Clifton, NJ, believes lack of structure is the number one culprit for deteriorating physical and mental health in college students, along with exhaustion from over scheduling. “Sometimes meal prepping takes time and a lot of college students do not want to invest the time out of their already packed schedules. The same goes for workouts,” she says. But a healthy lifestyle is so important—in college and in life after. “There are no negatives to living a healthy lifestyle and it’s setting the stage for the rest of your life,” Hener says. “First is the obvious, looking and feeling better overall. Exercise also helps you mentally. When you do something for yourself daily, it gives you an opportunity to clear your head and feel good about yourself.” Share these tips with your teen to help her stay healthy, mentally and physically: 18 June 2019 • siparent.com
College Crash Course.indd 3
5/22/19 9:18 AM
Find on-campus resources. If your teen is on medication and/or is seeing a therapist prior to college, have her connect with and learn about her school’s resources before she arrives, Dr. Ragouzeos recommends. Make time for fitness. A busy lifestyle is no excuse to neglect physical well-being. Hener’s an entrepreneur and mom of two, yet still clears one to two hours a day for her workouts. “I set aside that time no matter what, whether it’s not scheduling clients or waking up extra early,” she says. Choose healthier options. Eating fresh, full, and balanced meals with healthy proteins and fats cuts down on snacking and late-night binge eating. “Packing healthy snacks [helps to avoid] hitting the vending machines,” Hener says. “Looking at menus before going out to eat and knowing what you will order can reduce giving into peer pressure to make an unhealthy choice.” Get a workout buddy or register for a group workout. Once you get into a groove of incorporating workouts into your daily life, it becomes something you actually look forward to. Drink in moderation if you are of legal age. Avoiding alcohol may not feel like an option to some college students, but refraining from drinking every night and choosing a light beer over sweeter drinks is a way to watch sugar intake. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Many schools have anonymous hotlines and can connect students to external sources if needed. Although there continues to be stigma around mental health, it is much different than it used to be. Being Safe at Parties It is important to remind your child that movies depicting college party scenes are not reality; they rarely show the consequences of partying and drinking. And give her these basic tips for having fun wisely: Have a designated driver. This person should be determined before she and her group of friends arrive at the party. Ask if she has Uber or Lyft downloaded on her smartphone for easy access. (She should always double check that the driver is the same person indicated on her phone, and that the license plate is a match as well.) Have a buddy system. Be sure your teen knows to arrive at and leave the party in the same Uber, Lyft, or designated driver’s car as his friends. Keep an eye on your drinks, even nonalcoholic ones. This will decrease any chances of her drink being tampered with. Though you may not be ready to talk about your child leaving the nest just yet, having discussions with your teen about these topics can prevent future issues. “You don’t want to wait until there is a problem or scramble at the last minute,” Dr. Ragouzeos says.

NYC’s FIRST OUTLET Opens in St. George
Susan E. Wagner High School, Staten Island School of Civic Leadership and Staten Island Technical High School.
Shop ’til you drop, Staten Island! We can finally celebrate the official opening of the long-awaited Empire Outlets, New York City’s first-ever outlet center. Visitors to Empire Outlets can enjoy outletpriced merchandise across 340,000 square feet of space in the St. George comminity, just steps from the St. George Ferry. The north shore shopping destinations boasts scores of designer stores including Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, Columbia Sporting Goods, Gap Factory, H&M, Jockey, Nike Factory, and Old Navy among many others. Additional retailers, including Nordstrom Rack, American Eagle Outfitters, Crocs and more will open their stores throughout the spring and summer. Later this summer, a 40,000-square-foot food and beverage deck with sweeping views of Manhattan, will open with dozens of food concepts including MRKTPL, Staten Island’s first-ever artisanal food hall. “The Empire Outlets is the first large domino to fall in what hopefully will be a reclaiming and revitalization of a huge swath of Staten Island’s waterfront. It will lead to further investment, big and small, from the private sector and government, all while being an exciting tourist attraction that finally gets tourists off the Staten Island Ferry and into our community. It will help us show folks we are the Unexpected Borough,” said Staten Island Borough President James Oddo.
Computer Science for All Winners Announced The Computer Science for All Hack League winners were announced recently at City Hall, and Staten Island’s Marsh Avenue School for Expeditionary Learning was honored with a second place win. The winners were declared after 28 teams, consisting of approximately 130 students, built their projects and presented to a panel of guest judges and New York City Council Members. Through Computer Science for All, the city aims provide computer science education in every elementary, middle, and high school by 2025. The finalists in the Hack League included projects, apps and games designed to advocate for environmental sustainability and trash reduction, to solve the deer epidemic on Staten Island, and to reduce obesity and help people eat better and stay fit in New York City. Here on the Island, finalists competed from I.S. 34 Tottenville, Marsh Avenue School for Expeditionary Learning,
Lead Testing Needed for City Water Fountains Do you often stock up on water bottles when you go out to avoid water fountains at all costs? The Parks Department is taking steps to ease parents’ minds when thirsty kids stop for a sip. A new lead testing program is underway for the city’s more than 3,500 drinking fountains, in which all fountains are being tested for lead and fixed, if necessary. This strategy was introduced along with over 40 other initiatives in January 2019 as part of LeadFreeNYC, the City’s aggressive plan to eliminate childhood lead exposure. While drinking water from parks fountains is not a known source of elevated blood lead levels in children, this testing program serves to ensure the overall health and safety of New York City children. “This is great news for Staten Island and the south shore in particular, where so many of our parks are located,’ said Council Member Joe Borelli.” I am glad the Parks Department is taking the initiative and working with us to ensure that the water fountains in our community are clean and safe to use.” Citywide testing began in May and will continue throughout this month. You can track the drinking fountain testing on an interactive map at NYC. gov/parks/lead-testing. The map shows the status of each fountain—those awaiting testing, those that have been tested, results of the tests and those closed for remediation. Make the Decision Are you still on the fence about summer camp? It’s not too late to sign up! Many camps offer late registration. Your child will likely thank you later. Young People’s Day Camp at Nansen Park shared these five major benefits of camp, as cited by the American Camp Association. A sense of competence. Children feel more competent in their tasks when they’ve got the network of support a summer camp offers. Camp offers a place to practice and perfect skills so a child can feel confident in their abilities. Feeling connected. Kids who go to summer camp have a greater feeling of connectedness and bonding with those around them. This is because of the relationships they develop at camp. The ability to make decisions. At camp, kids are asked to make decisions, like what activity they’ll do or who they’ll be working with. This kind of practice creates good decision makers. The ability to find out who they are. Identity is an integral part of how people relate to the world. Having a safe place to develop that identity is paramount to becoming a successful person. Camp is one of those indispensable spaces where kids can develop who they are among staff, counselors and friends who care. Independence. Campers develop a sense of independence through a culmination of all four previous reasons. Competence, feeling bonded and connected, making decisions and affirming one’s identity creates independent individuals who change the world in positive ways. Fun Station Day Camp offered some additional benefits to a camp experience, as reported by parents of kids who have attended their summer program: • Campers make tons of friends, and often remain friends throughout the school year despite going to different schools. • Many campers start young and develop cherished summertime memories throughout their entire childhood, due to the unique experiences that only summer camp can offer. • For working parents, camp is a safe, fun place for children to spend their summer. • It’s fun! It’s not uncommon for parents to report their child goes home excited about the non-stop fun they had all day and then, exhausted, fell asleep while still in camp clothes.

Life Lessons on Handling Mistakes Good Sportsmanship Starts with Parents & Coaches
By Joe LoVerde A local sportswriter and coach for youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. Read more sports advice at siparent.com/goodsports
Among the benefits of having your children play sports are the various life lessons that will serve them well them long into the future. And the key factors in whether or not those lessons are positive usually will be the actions of the adults — parents and coaches — who are in the picture.
T
wo of the biggest lessons I have seen as a young player, a coach and a parent involve handling mistakes. The first involves officials — referees, umpires and the like. The person who makes the foul calls, the offsides calls, the balls and strikes calls. Some are better than others at these jobs, of course, but these people are human and hardly infallible. Mistakes will be made. Perspectives of these officials and spectators will often differ. But it’s how the adults at the games react to these disagreements that will most affect the young athletes. How do you respond when you don’t agree with an official’s call? Do you keep your feelings to yourself or discuss them with the other parents? Do you take it a step further and yell out to the official? Do you later tell your children about the perceived bad call, expressing that the team’s failure or their individual lack of success is the result of the official’s call or non-call? I have heard this phrase than a few times: “The ref screwed us.” These are definite no-nos. Kids’ games can have a certain degree of seriousness attached but, ultimately, they are supposed to be about fun. These actions take the fun out. They are setting examples you shouldn’t want your children to copy. They cause kids to make excuses for their own failures. Blaming someone else can become a habit that prevents success. Another thing to consider that often teenagers are officiating youth sports games. It’s bad enough to berate an adult official in pub-
lic, but directing ugly accusations at young refs or umpires borders on abuse or bullying. That teenager is someone’s child, likely officiating your child’s game to earn some money. They are most likely doing the best they can. It’s even more important in these cases to refrain from shouting your displeasure. Threat these young officials the way you would like to see an adult treat your child. This isn’t the only kind of blame game sometimes seen in sports that down the road can lead to unproductive actions when the children grow up. When your child’s team is facing a situation with the bases loaded and no one out, should you focus on how the bases became loaded? Should you blame the pitcher for walking batters or a fielder for failing to make a play? Should you verbally attack the coach for his selection of who’s pitching or playing what position? Years from now, when your child is a member of the workforce or leading his or her own family, is it more important to point fingers when a crisis occurs or to work with family or co-workers to solve the problem? It’s not important who makes the mistake; it’s important that everyone work together to find a solution. Stay calm, develop a plan and collectively follow it through. Whether you are a parent or a coach, how you handle these situations may have a huge impact on your children when they grow up. You owe it to them to handle predicaments productively.

ACES Programs Staten Island Families Call for Expanding the Program
I
By Michael Reilly NYS Assemblyman, previous District 31 Community Education Council President and former New York City Police Department Lieutenant.
n April, I wrote to Chancellor Richard Carranza expressing frustration that the Academic, Career, and Essential Skills (ACES) special education program for students with intellectual or multiple disabilities was not offered in full on Staten Island. I also requested that the Chancellor reconsider expanding the program in time for the 2019 - 2020 school year. ACES Programs provide an opportunity to learn academic, work, and independent living skills in one of New York City’s local community school districts (elementary, middle and high school). The programs support students in learning daily living skills such as building relationships with peers and adults, grocery shopping, learning how to use a bank, etc. The ACES student profile is identified by the following criteria: • Students with a mild to moderate intellectual disability. • Academic abilities and skills are significantly below grade level. Students may need additional support when working independently or in groups. Assistive technology devices may be used to support learning and interaction. • Students may have mild to moderate behavior challenges, but no aggressive or self-injurious behaviors. Behavior challenges may interfere with learning and social opportunities. The student’s ability to carry out functional life skills such as grooming, dressing, eating, keeping safe, and socializing (known as adaptive behaviors) will be well below age expected levels. To assess independence and daily living skills, a
Program Features Class Structure: Students in the ACES program attend a District 1-32 school in a smaller class. The number of students in ACES special classes increase as students move from elementary school and middle school to high school. In Kindergarten through eighth grade, most ACES Programs have up to 12 students in a special class, one special education teacher, and a classroom paraprofessional. In high school, ACES Programs have up to 15 students and one special education teacher. The program emphasizes inclusive opportunities for students to join the school community and engage with peers who do not have IEPs. Teachers and support staff are trained in specialized instructional strategies and assessments that support students in learning and applying work and independent living skills at home, in school, and in the community. ACES Program classes follow the New York State Learning Standards. Principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and essential skill building are a part of the program. Chancellor’s Response Chancellor Carranza’s office responded to my inquiry and expressed interest in expanding the ACES Program on Staten Island; however, part of this process requires the Department of Education to identify locations for the program, typically based on need, which is why I am asking parents interested in enrolling their child in the ACES Program to contact my office by phone at (718) 967-5194, or by email at reillym@ nyassembly.gov to obtain an application. Alternatively, parents may visit www. schools.nyc.gov/special-education/schoolsettings/specialized-programs and select the option ‘Academics, Career, and Essential Skills Program’ to access the application. I am grateful to Chancellor Carranza and his staff for their consideration on this matter, and for giving us a chance to show that there is, in fact, a need for this program on the elementary school level on Staten Island.

planning a vacation? Eight Ways to Protect Your Home When Your Family is Away By Barbara Russo These tasks will keep your house safe—and give you peace of mind.
Y
ou’ve planned your family vacation for this summer, which is finally here! But while you’re out of town, are you concerned about your home? We usually are, and we triple-check everything to ensure nothing goes wrong. Experts shared the top things to do in your home to prevent potential property damage and financial problems while you’re having fun on your family vacation. Summer can be a busy season for criminals who take advantage of the fact that homeowners will be away for days or weeks at a time. Most home burglaries take place in July and August, when windows are more likely to be left open and families leave for excursions, according to information from Esurance. As if property theft wasn’t enough to threaten your house while you’re away, plumbing and other utility mishaps could result in property damage and big financial problems when you return. The good news? There are some simple things you can do to prepare your house before you leave to help prevent these catastrophes from occurring. The below list of tips from home-protection experts will help you enjoy a stress-free and relaxing holiday without worrying about things back home. Make Your House Look Occupied The simplest yet most effective thing you can do to thwart burglars is to leave a few lights on around the house, giving the appearance that someone is home. Dale Martin, co-vice president of claims at Franklin Mutual Insurance, recommends setting interior and exterior lights on an automatic timer. Another telltale sign no one is home is a full mailbox. “Have a family member or trusted neighbor collect the mail, newspaper, and packages, or have the post office put a temporary hold on delivery,” Martin says. Arrange for Yard Care An unkempt lawn can be another clear indicator that a house is empty. Mow your lawn before you leave, or “ask a trusted neighbor or lawn service to keep the yard cut and maintained while you’re away,” Martin advises. Prevent Potential Water Damage Avoid a plumbing disaster by turning off the main water supply valve to your home before you head out, Martin

LIPM recommends. Doing so will help prevent small leaks that may occur from turning into a nightmare scenario of a flooded house, destroyed property, and huge repair bills. You can also do a quick search for leaks or cracks in water lines that lead to sinks and toilets, and get them fixed before you leave. And make sure gutters, downspouts, and drains are clear. “If water overflows from its proper channels, it can seep under siding and flood the basement,” says Kristie Bergey, a leasing and sales agent at Very Real Estate in Philadelphia. Run the Dishwasher “After the cycle has finished, empty the dishwasher, then leave the door open,” Bergey recommends. “That will allow the interior to dry, and it won’t smell musty by the time you get home.” Bergey also recommends flushing the toilet and leaving the lid up so the water doesn’t become stagnant. Unplug Appliances Do a double check before you leave to unplug small appliances, especially ones you’ll be using right before you walk out the door. “Make sure you unplug things like hair curlers, irons. You’re packing and you’re in a rush, you can leave something plugged in that is potentially a dangerous situation,” says Anthony Marino, a licensed associate real estate broker based in southwest and downtown Brooklyn. Arm the Alarms Bergey advises homeowners to let their security companies know they’ll be away. “Give a family member or friend your alarm code, the security company’s phone number, your itinerary, and contact numbers,” she says. “Press the test button on your smoke alarms to make sure they work, and change the battery if necessary.” Consider Smart-Home Technology Smart home cameras and surveillance systems are all the rage in home security these days. They tend to be easier to install than full-fledged security systems, and being wire-free, it’s much harder for a burglar to take apart the system before attempting to break in. The technology works through your cellphone or tablet, allowing you to see what’s going on back home. “Smart home cameras ensure your home continues to run normally while you’re away on holiday or even if you’re traveling locall,” said Alex Teichman, CEO and co-founder of Lighthouse AI, a 3-D sensing smart-home security camera. Don’t Post Your Trip on Social Media It may be tempting to tell the world about your upcoming tropical getaway or camping experience, but doing so could be dangerous. Most home-security experts will agree that announcing you’re not home on social media is an open invitation to burglars. Wait until you return to post that selfie of you with a palm tree or exploring the Grand Canyon.

Staten Island
Parks
Offering an Outdoor Oasis for Families By christine albano An avid park-goer, Staten Island writer Christine Albano walks 2-3 miles a day in Staten Island’s beautiful parks while she reminisces about years of park hopping with her three kids.
S
taten Island families seeking an outdoor oasis this summer don’t have to look far when it comes to enjoying one of the island’s many parks. Parents said they are fortunate to live in a borough that boasts over 12,000 acres of green space thanks to Staten Island’s Greenbelt and Gateway National Recreation, and where finding a neighborhood park is easy, close by, and allows them to enjoy a day outdoors in nature with their families. For parents who want their kids to unplug and unwind, there is no shortage of open spaces to fit the bill for spending a day of fun and frolicking in Mother Nature -- from the North to the South shores. Large or small, playful or picturesque, there are many Staten Island parks that families can visit to get a combination of recreational facilities, public amenities, and natural beauty. An informal survey of Staten Island parents who frequent local parks said their top criteria for park selection includes: safety, cleanliness, ample playground and open space, proximity to their home or school, public restrooms, and a variety of other sports and recreational features, such as bike, walking and hiking paths, basketball courts, and sprinklers in the warm weather to name a few.
Jaxon Krauss at Miller Field
Here are Staten Island Parent’s top picks for parks where parents can enjoy their next outdoor adventure. Bloomingdale Park Parents said this park, located at Drumgoole Road West and Lenevar Avenue, is a prime spot for expansive walking trails and sports facilities, including baseball and soccer fields. The 130-acre park and natural space also has two areas for kid play, a sprinkler, and a public restroom facility. Kids even go sledding there in the winter. “There’s something for whatever we want to do — a jungle gym, sports field, trails for walking, and the surrounding block is smooth for bike riding and roller skating,” said
mom Kristin Shtrahman, who noted that the sprinklers add additional fun in the hot summer months. Although she lives in Mariners Harbor, she frequents the South Shore oasis because it is her 5-year-old daughter Cadence’s favorite park. Dad Gennaro Lattanzi agrees about its amenities, and said the park is always teeming with children for his son to play with. The fenced-in play area only has two entry and exit points, which is a plus for safety conscious parents. His family also enjoys the bike trails inside and on the perimeter of the park, as well as watching the “old timers” play bocce ball. “It’s nice to see people of all ages using the park every day,” he said. “It’s a neighborhood treasure if you ask me.” Bloomingdale Park scores high with moms, like Nicole Biancanielo of Woodrow, who rank it as the cleanest park, with a multitude of playground options for kids of all ages, as well as a huge field for open play.

LIPM In addition, the park hosts free holiday events throughout the year, with bounce houses, games, and face painting, which is one of her 6-year-old daughter’s favorite perks. Pirate Park This Nelson Avenue and Tennyson Drive park offers a creative twist on local play with the high seas nearby. The pirate-themed park is a favorite among parents with little buccaneers who want to navigate a day of imaginative exploring and adventure with other shipmates. With the the marina at Great Kills Harbor as a backdrop, this nautical setting is complete with a shipwrecked boat and a shark to climb on, Staten Island Ferry boat and lighthouse structures for exploring, as well as wide play areas. Parents love the park for its options for both young and older children, beautiful scenery, and safe ample area to ride bikes and skateboards. It has two sections -- one fenced-in area with toddler-friendly swings, jungle gym for climbing, a sandbox, and sprinklers in the warm weather, as well as an area for older kids. “It is right on the water by the boatyard, so you see and hear the ocean and there are always ducks you can feed,” Ms. Biancanielo explained. “It’s a great time for the kids.” “The views are great and you can see some sea life, wildlife, and boats at the marina,” said another mom. Willowbrook Park Part of the Staten Island Greenbelt, this gem is located on Eton Place off Victory Boulevard, with an alternate entrance on Victory at Morani Street, and houses the “Carousel for All Children,” which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Families can enjoy a stroll around the park and stop at its three main attractions -- including the beautifully painted, colorful merry-go-round operated by the nonprofit Greenbelt Conservancy in partnership with the New York Parks Department, and the small, but equally fun, playground for toddlers with a jungle gym for climbing, monkey bars, and
slides. Afterward, families can venture over to the duck pond and feed some feathered friends, and do some catch and release fishing. The park also has a picnic area with tables, a tennis court, baseball fields, hiking trails, as well as seasonal activities, including canoeing, archery, a Huckleberry Finn fishing contest, pumpkin festival, and other family days. The Carousel operates early May through early October from 11 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. and costs $2 per ride. Schmul Park Toddlers of all ages flock to this park favorite which boasts a completely fenced-in facility with a soft padded covering on most of the ground for added safety and protection, which moms really love. Located on Wild Avenue off Victory Boulevard near Melvin Avenue in Travis, the park is “spacious and super safe for little ones to run around and go wild,” in one mom’s words. “I love that the floor is all foam so the kids don’t get hurt so bad if they fall,” said another mom. “It’s small enough where you can see your kids no matter where they are,” added another mom. “They also have sprinklers and a fun slide and climbing areas for the kids.” Older kids who enjoy skateboarding and rollerblading have their space as well, she said, adding, “kids of every age seem to enjoy it.” While its cleanliness and public restrooms are a win for moms, and its size and layout are perfect for little park-goers, one mom noted its relatively small size can be challenging for older kids who may get bored faster than younger ones.
lawn to renting pedal or row boating along the lake, there is no shortage of attractions for kids and adults alike. Whether parents want to relax on a blanket in the large grassy areas for a picnic or utilize one of the many barbeques and picnic tables for an outdoor feast, the park offers many different options for families of all sizes and interests. Sports lovers will enjoy the baseball and soccer fields as well as the basketball courts, while there are also walking paths and hiking trails for other families. The WWII Veterans Memorial Ice Skating Rink also operates November through March and costs $10 for admission and $5 for skate rental. Boat rentals are available in front of The Stone House restaurant on the grounds of Clove Lakes, and are $15 per hour on Saturdays and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, the park hosts several free public events throughout the year, including summer concert series and Movies Under the Stars events sponsored by the Parks Department and the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. The park has a public restroom facility, as well as an on-site parking lot, which is a big plus for parents -- especially those who drive from further distances, like Courtney Repoli of Bay Terrace and Meredith Gaskins of New Springville, who were strolling through the park on recent spring day.
Clove Lakes Park Set in one of the most tranquil and picturesque settings in Staten Island, the Clove Lakes gem is filled with activities for families to spend the day.

raising kids They frequently meet up with Linda Torchi, who lives near Clove Lakes, so their children can ride their scooters, feed the ducks, and enjoy the playground. The moms met at their kids’ gymnastics playgroups and enjoy the park for its extensive green space, scenery, and the parking and restroom facilities are an added bonus. Plus, the moms enjoy getting in their own exercise at the same time, they said. Silver Lake Park With rolling hills and plush greenery, open space, a playground, scenic walking paths, and sports facilities, Silver Lake Park is another favorite among Staten Island parents. Located off Victory Boulevard between Clove and Forest, and off Forest between Victory and Hart Boulevard, the park is likened to Manhattan’s Central Park for its size and picturesque scenery, trails, lake, and sports facilities. Families flock to its playground -- though small it is nestled among walking paths and trails and over 200-acres of wide green space for open play, picnics, and after-school playdates. Sisters Amelia, 2, and Adrienne, 4, were smiling from ear to ear as their mom pushed them on the swings for
a recent late afternoon playdate, as many nearby children enjoyed the jungle gym facility or rode their bikes and scooters. The park features an 18-hole golf course, as well as tennis and basketball courts, baseball field, and spray showers, and is also dog-friendly so even the four-legged family members can join in the park fun. South Beach and Park With a spectacular backdrop of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, South Beach and South Beach Dolphin Park can be an all-day adventure for families who want to sunbathe, splash in the ocean, or make use of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk and its adjacent park and recreational facilities. The park is located off Father Capodanno Boulevard at Sand Lane with its notable Dolphins fountain greeting park and beach-goers before they enter the free parking lot. A playground and sprinkler for little ones are just two of the amenities for parents who split the day between beach-going and other activities, like bike riding or walking on the boardwalk, or fishing at Ocean Breeze Fishing Pier. There is even a vendor with hourly bike and surrey rentals for families, and a park for grandparents to play chess and bocce at the playground area

near Doty Avenue and Father Capodanno. Other sports facilities include basketball courts, baseball fields, and kayaking and canoeing launches with required permits, as well as volleyball courts near Doty Avenue. Public bathroom facilities, as well as a snack bar, and picnic tables on the boardwalk offer families the amenities they seek when out for a long day of fun and adventure. Two restaurants -- the indoor/outdoor eatery South Finn Grill and upscale catering hall The Vanderbilt -- are located directly on the boardwalk. Midland Beach and Turtle Playground Located just a few short miles from South Beach and Dolphin Park, this equally enjoyable park and beach setting is a favorite among parents and children for its sun-kissed shores and fun-filled facilities. When families are not catching sun rays or building sand castles, two playgrounds offer ample room for families on seasonable days, and kids can run and cool off in the beach-themed water fountains. The park also offers older kids and teens a skate park for use with bikes, inline skates, and scooters adjacent to the playground. Unlike some of the city’s other skate parks, the Midland Beach site is unsupervised, and skaters are not required to have a liability waiver. Two handball courts are also found near the Midland Beach playgrounds, as well as a soccer field, and other open space to play, picnic, and

Public parking and restrooms are also available at this section of the 3-mile boardwalk, as well as barbecuing facilities and ample open space. Great Kills Park Nestled off Hylan Boulevard at Buffalo Street, this combination park, beach, marina, and playground area is an attraction for families who love all-things outdoors. Part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, the park offers fishing and seasonal crabbing, boating, hiking, bird watching, and a marina and beach areas that border nearby New Dorp, Cedar Grove, Oakwood, and Fox beaches. Wolfe’s Pond Park A popular South Shore recreational spot and former summer beach resort with cottages and bungalows, the park was acquired by the city’s Parks Department in 1929. Located off Hylan Boulevard and bordered between Holten and Cornelia avenues, the site now features a mecca for nature and beach loving families alike. Its host of amenities includes barbecuing, bathrooms, beaches, bicycling, dog-friendly area, fishing and hiking trails, two playgrounds, roller hockey rink at the end of Cornelia Avenue, spray showers, tennis courts and of course a pond. A boathouse, bathhouse, stairs to the beach, a parking lot, and picnic area are also featured attractions for Staten Island parents who want to give their kids a suburban experience just outside of the city. It has a free parking lot, and the beach area opened for the season in May. During beach season, lifeguards are on duty daily, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty and in closed sections. Closed sections are marked with signs and/or red flags. Among its modern-day amenities, many plants and animals call this natural habitat their home along the Raritan and Prince’s bays. Its history dates back to 6,000 years ago when archaeological evidence suggests that

Question: My kids have a history of getting bored fairly early in their summer vacation, please give me a list of some boredom busters. – Avoiding Boredom Answer: It doesn’t take too long for some children to lament, “I’m bored.” There are many activities in every community that can keep them interested from sports to summer school. Here are some of our suggestions to keep your children busy so they can never say, “I’m bored.” • Neighborhood movie night: Your children will have a lot to do to set it up. First, they must transform the backyard into a movie theater. This can be done with only a projector and a large bed sheet. They also need to select a movie to show, make posters to advertise and create tickets for admission. A decision needs to be made on whether to have refreshments available and what type of seating there will be. • Lunchtime book club: Children will pack up their favorite lunch, get a bottle of water and grab a good book. Next, they head to a community swimming pool or the local park.
Reading outside in the summer is great. Everyone can read and eat their lunch. Then at the end of a chapter the group can discuss what they have read if all have read the same book and predict what they think will happen in the next chapter. If the children are reading different books, they can just talk about their own book. • Adventure Day: Select one day a week as the day when you and your children will do something out of the ordinary. The choices are absolutely endless. Go visit a museum, a train or bus station, a fire station, city hall, the state capitol, a planetarium, an aquarium or a factory that offers tours. Ride a bus or take a tram to somewhere they have never been before. Go out in the country and pick berries, tomatoes and corn for dinner. • Scavenger hunts with a theme such as plants and geocaching for hidden treasure are other boredom-fighting activities. Question: My young children already can do some hunt-and-peck typing. How early are these skills being taught in schools? Is 5 too young to teach my child some keyboarding? – Keyboarder

LIPM Answer: Parents and teachers are all asking when should keyboarding skills be taught. Much of this is due to the Common Core standards, which dictate that students at every age must be able to use the internet for research and use digital tools to enhance their schoolwork with sound, video, images and writing. In fact, by third grade, they will have to write three short passages on the computer for standardized Common Core tests. Keyboarding or typing in the past was not usually taught before middle school. Few kindergarteners are developmentally ready to handle keyboarding. They simply do not have the fine motor skills or the hand span to keyboard. Schools now vary all over the place about when they introduce formal keyboarding. Some may start as early as kindergarten. Children, however, are more ready to handle this skill when they are in fourth or fifth grade. At the kindergarten level, it is most helpful if parents show their children how to use a mouse, click, drag and type (hunt and peck) simple words on a keyboard, as these skills could be useful in kindergarten. This is age-appropriate. And these are basic skills that many schools are teaching in the primary grades. Ultimately, children must acquire keyboarding skills. However, because of the difficulty of doing this by third grade, some states are now developing pencil-and-paper versions of Common Core tests. Question: Our kid expects to succeed all the time in school and sports. When he doesn’t, he gets very upset. How can we help him handle failure? – Need to Succeed Answer: Everyone likes to succeed. Who doesn’t want to get the promotion, ace the quiz or be on the winning soccer team? Nevertheless, children have to learn to cope with failure, from losing a board game to failing a test. Unfortunately, high-achieving students can be quite afraid of being “bad” at anything. School just gets harder and harder every year, so you want your son to begin to develop a “can do” attitude. You do not want him to become a child who gives up easily and expects to fail. Should there be an area in which your son is truly in over his head, get him help as soon as possible. When your son does not do well at something, either academically or sports related, it is probably because he has not sufficiently mastered the skill. Help him think of ways he could have done better. And show him how far he has come in mastering a skill. By doing this, he will be able to handle other difficult situations when they occur and still be able to control his emotions.
