THE BIG APPLE AWARDS

MUSIC & TOYS 4 AUTISM

Think your child’s teacher is the best of the best? You can show your gratitude for the impact she has made in your child’s lie by nominating her (or him) for a Big Apple Award! Now in its eighth year, the Big Apple Awards are granted annually to New York City’s most outstanding teachers. Last year, over 7,000 teachers were nominated from over 1,500 schools across the city. To qualify, nominees must be current, full-time public school teachers in City district schools, charter programs, or early childhood education centers who inspire their students, exemplify great teaching, and improve their school communities. Nominations are accepted anonymously, and your nominee will not be given your name without your permission. To nominate a teacher, you will need to provide the teacher’s name and subject, the school name and borough, the teacher’s email address, and the school principal’s name. You will also need to provide a brief statement on why your nominee should be considered for the award. You have until December 2 to nominate your favorite teacher, so don’t miss out. Got to siparent.com to link to a nomination form. Good luck to all of Staten Island’s wonderful teachers!

After a successful two years of fundraising, John Louis Sublett is again encouraging Staten Islanders to open their hearts for children with special needs. Over the past two holiday seasons, and with the help of his son, John. Jr., who also has autism, Mr. Sublett was able to fill almost 1,000 gift bags with specialized toys and distribute them to students with special needs at schools in Staten Island. This year, in addition to his traditional fundraising efforts, Mr. Sublett is also hosting a new campaign called “Music 4 Autism,” which aims to provide 500 music players loaded with 600 songs, 60 videos and a built in FM radio to students with special needs as well. Want to contribute to this wonderful cause? Go to toys4autism.org to make a monetary donation or to donate a toy from an Amazon wish list.

LEGO REPLAY

So your child has officially outgrown his LEGO obsession. You no longer live in fear of the searing pained associated with stepping on a particularly pointy piece. But what to do with the massive collection your child has amassed over the years. Those things aren’t cheap! Here’s some great news. The LEGO Group recently announced the launch of a new project to encourage people to donate their old LEGO bricks so they can be used by less fortunate children. LEGO Replay is a pilot program that will accept any and all previously used LEGO bricks and donate them to children’s nonprofits. Simply collect any loose LEGO pieces, sets or elements, place them into a cardboard box, and visit the LEGO Replay website to print out a free shipping label to ship your LEGOs out. Go to givebackbox.com/LEGO for labels and more information.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES

This month will be your first one-on-one conference with your child’s teacher, so take the time to prepare. Talk first with your child to get a heads-up on any potential problem they might be having in the classroom and ask if there are any missing homework assignments or any upcoming projects they should be working on. Take note of how long it takes your child to complete homework. If your child is struggling, consider their seat assignment in the classroom. Are they distracted by other students, traffic near their desk, proximity to windows, or use of technology? Now is the time to ask for a change or for advice from the teacher.

Staff sergeant Michael Ollis is a well-known hero around Staten Island. At just 24 years old, the soldier selflessly sacrificed his own life while shielding a Polish soldier from a suicide bomber in Afghanistan. What many might not know about SSG Ollis is that he visited the students at P.S. 56 in Rossville when he first enlisted in the Army, and he continued to exchange letters with the fourth-grade classes while overseas. As a tribute to him, students at P.S. 56 have joined forces with the SSG Michael Ollis Freedom Foundation to to make care kits for active duty military service members. The students and staff will assemble the kits, along with notes and cards. All donations made to Operation Ollis must be new, unused and not damaged. They can be dropped off now through Veterans Day at the main office of PS 56, located at 250 Kraemer Ave. These items were specifically requested by the service members: • Phone cards are the most requested items, followed by • VISA and MasterCard gift cards • Beef jerky and other non-perishable food and candy • Wet wipes (individually packed in foil packages) • Body wipes in plastic, pull-out canisters • Disposable razors for men and women • Deodorant (four-to-eight ounces), body lotion, lip balm, eye drops floss, toothbrushes, travel-size foot powder (non-aerosol) and socks • Feminine hygiene products • Current magazines, books, DVDs, CDs (clean content) • Playing cards, posters and calendars to decorate their barracks • Small earphones, blank memory sticks and batteries • New UV sunglasses

Dr. Frederick Hecht, MAGD

Dedicating over 4,513 hours in continuing education during his career, Dr. Frederick Hecht has become a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD)! What does that mean for you and your family? Less than 2 percent of general dentists in the U.S. and Canada are AGD Masters. When you see a dentist with MAGD after their name, you can rest assured that they care about knowing the latest techniques and best practices in dentistry. AGD Masters practice these techniques in a classroom setting multiple times a year — not every dentist does this. You will be in good hands at Staten Island Dental Care! Dr. Frederick Hecht and team have created an inviting atmosphere with comfortable, state-of-the-art treatment rooms featuring natural light, as well as a philosophy of care that promotes teamwork between the patient and dentist and comprehensive dentistry to address total oral health. At Staten Island Dental Care, you’ll experience excellent clinical treatments and personalized attention. Here are testimonials of happy customers. Every one of our patients is different. That’s why Dr. Hecht and our experienced dental care team offer various sedation dentistry options to manage your comfort. • Laughing Gas can relax a patient during dental procedures. The patient will be awake and responsive to the dentist. The gas is delivered through a facemask.

• Oral Conscious Sedation is a good option for patients who experience intense dental anxiety or for those who need complex work done. With oral conscious sedation, the patient takes an anxiety-reducing drug prior to dental work, and sedation dentist Dr. Hecht also administers laughing gas. The patient will be completely relaxed, but not “out,” during the visit. Learn more about oral sedation in our patient library. • IV Sedation is delivery of intravenous medication during a procedure. Patients will be comfortably sedated during the visit. “I went to Dr. Hecht and the office and staff were amazing. They were extremely welcoming and reassuring. Dr. Hecht and Angie made me very comfortable. All in all my experience was wonderful and I would highly recommend them. If you have a fear of the dentist they will change that!!!” – Vincent B. sthma is a respiratory condition that inflames an individual’s airways, and it is very common among younger children. If your child has recently been diagnosed with this respiratory disease, then you will need to come up with a comprehensive plan to reduce their risk of an asthma attack. Here are a few tactics and strategies that you can use to keep your child healthy and comfortable in the coming years. Track Their Triggers When your child is exposed to asthma triggers, they could have an asthma attack. Some of the most common triggers include smoke, pollen, mold, dander, and dust mites. If a certain allergen triggers an asthma attack, then you should write it down in a journal so that you can track the triggers and

the severity of the attack they cause. This will help you work with a doctor to ensure that your child is prepared with the right medications. You should also keep track of when their asthma attacks take place and how long it takes them to recover. Deep Clean Your Home Cleaning every room in your home isn’t going to cure your child’s asthma, but it will improve their respiratory health. Your home could be filled with allergens and toxins that could trigger asthma attacks, which why it needs to be cleaned as often as possible. Instead of using harsh cleaners that could potentially irritate your child’s airways, you might want to make your own cleaning products made of non-toxic ingredients like white vinegar and baking soda. Having the

carpets and furniture regularly cleaned to prevent the settling of dust mites and the buildup of allergens can greatly increase the health of your child. Have Your HVAC System Serviced Keeping your HVAC system clean and well-maintained is going to be absolutely vital to your child’s health and comfort. At least twice a year, you should hire a local contractor who offers air conditioning repair services and general HVAC maintenance. During those service calls, they can plug any holes in the system, sanitize the ducts, and clean the outdoor condenser. You might also want to have an HVAC contractor install a whole-house air filtration system or dehumidifier to prevent mold development or allergen buildup. Inform Their School After your kid is diagnosed with asthma, the doctor will most likely give you an asthma action plan. That plan should include information such as what medications they are taking and how often those medications need to be taken. Before your child goes to school, you need to make a few copies of the asthma action plan and give them to all of their teachers. You can also make copies for their coaches and any other adults who will be supervising them. Because asthma attacks can be so severe, it’s important that the adults in charge of your child have access to all relevant information regarding their condition, triggers, and how to help during any kind of asthma attack. An asthma diagnosis is going to change your child’s life, but you can do quite a bit to mitigate some of the side effects of this condition. Asthma is very common and in no way has to be debilitating or impede your child’s quality of life. With a little bit of foresight and some planning, you should be able to improve your child’s respiratory health and help them avoid common asthma triggers.

ANTIBIOTICS

4 FACTS PARENTS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE BY EVIVO

Learn more at evivo.com

W

hen administered properly, antibiotics can provide essential, even lifesaving, relief to a sick child. However, antibiotics are not without risks. While they are commonly used to kill bacterial infections or prevent infections from occurring after surgery, overuse and misuse of antibiotics over the past several generations has led to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The World Health Organization calls antibiotic resistance one of the top threats to global health. Since babies are just as susceptible to antibiotic resistance as anyone else, it’s critical to educate yourself, so you can advocate for your child’s health. Consider these facts about antibiotic resistance: Antibiotic resistance stems from overuse and misuse of antibiotics. According to the CDC, more than 160 million prescriptions are written for antibiotics every year in the United States, and it’s estimated 50% of all

prescriptions may be inappropriate. It only takes one round of antibiotics to contribute to resistance, and the average child will receive two rounds by age 2. In hospital settings, 40% of newborn infections are now resistant to standard treatment. Antibiotic resistance can be acquired early in life. Research from Evivo baby probiotic confirms newborns just 7 days old are born with high levels of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and release millions of resistant bacteria in each dirty diaper, further accelerating the spread of antibiotic resistance. In the same study, Evivo significantly reduced antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the infant gut by reintroducing a beneficial gut bacteria called B. infantis, which out-competes resistant bacteria. Antibiotic-resistant superbugs spread easily. Antibiotic resistance can spread from humans, farms and animals, and global travel also contributes to the spread of these resistant bacteria. Poor infection control in hospitals is a main factor in the spread of antibiotic resistance, according to the CDC, as bacteria can easily attach to lab coats and medical

equipment. These bacterial superbugs have figured out how to survive and spread among humans, creating a vicious cycle that can be difficult and expensive to treat. Antibiotic resistance is hard to treat. Superbugs have left doctors and scientists scrambling to find safe alternatives that don’t trigger additional resistance. For example, Evivo’s probiotic with B. infantis fights the spread of antibiotic resistance by reducing harmful bacteria during infancy. “Since we know that even one round of antibiotics in children can contribute to antibiotic resistance, it’s important to take precautionary measures to ensure babies are best prepared in case antibiotics are ever needed,” said pediatrician and best-selling nutrition author Dr. Tanya Altmann. “Evivo is the only baby probiotic that is shown to protect baby’s gut from bad bacteria, and now it’s proven to reduce antibiotic-resistant bacteria before they can multiply or spread to others.” Steps Parents Can Take Parents can prevent the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria with these practical tips: • Don’t give antibiotics for viral infections such as the common cold or flu. • If you’re unsure whether your child needs an antibiotic, seek information from your health care practitioner about the advantages and disadvantages. • Ask your doctor if you can take a “wait and see” approach and, if so, work closely with him or her to monitor your child. • If you must give an antibiotic to an infant, also administer a probiotic like Evivo, which includes a form of B. infantis that works to reduce antibiotic-resistant bacteria and ensures good bacteria are restored in baby’s gut. • Follow and complete dosage instructions to ensure bad bacteria are eliminated. • Don’t save antibiotics for next time. If there is any medicine left once you’ve completed the dosage as prescribed, safely discard the leftovers.

VOLUNTEER & DONATION OPPORTUNITIES Give back to fellow Staten Islanders in need this holiday season.

BY S.I. PARENT STAFF

T

hanksgiving is the perfect time to show how thankful you are for life’s blessings by helping those who are less fortunate. It doesn’t take much to offer a helping hand to someone in need. Here are some wonderful opportunities in Staten Island for those looking to give back this holiday season. 25TH ANNUAL RICHARD GARDNER JR. MEMORIAL FUND Since 1995, the Richard Gardner Jr. Memorial Fund has held Christmas parties for sick and underprivileged children, donating thousands of toys in memory of a young police officer who was killed. Every year, the organization reaches out to underprivileged families, sick children, underprivileged day care centers, children without families, organizations assisting families of domestic violence, underprivileged churches and children with sick parents. This year, they plan to visit

children at Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital on Christmas Eve. Their toy drive night will be held at Castleton Corners Pub (1815 Victory Blvd) on December 7, 2019 at 9pm, featuring music, raffles and drink specials – all to benefit the cause. Email Dennis McKeon at dennis.mckeon@ where-to-turn.org for details or follow them at facebook. com/groups/54069546163. • Snow Shoveling for Seniors: Where to Turn recruits student volunteers every year, each of whom adopts one of the 2,500 Staten Island seniors registered and shovels for them, free of charge, when it snows. Go to where-to-turn.org/news to apply. TOYS 4 AUTISM After a successful two years of fundraising, John Louis Sublett is once again encouraging Staten Islanders to open their hearts for children with special needs. Over the past two years, and with the help of his son, John. Jr., who also has autism, he was able to fill almost 1,000 gift bags with specialized toys and distribute them to hcildren with special needs. This year, in addition to his traditional fundraisers, Mr. Sublett is also hosting a new fundraiser called “Music for Autism.” Go to our Community & School News scetion for more information on on his special needs initiaves for the 2019 holiday sesaon. Staten Islanders say THANKS this

g n i v i g s k n a h T

BY CHRISTINE ALBANO

Staten Island-based writer Christine Albano covers numerous topics, including education, health care, and social media, and is especially thankful for her three children, family, home, and career -- and this year for new beginnings.

W

ith November’s arrival and bringing with it the quintessential month for counting blessings, Staten Island parents are eager to share what they are most thankful for this year -from their children, spouses, family, and pets to their health, careers, and even the borough where they live. “I am extremely thankful to my amazing fiancé for all the support he has given me over the last 11 years,” proud wife and mom Krystal Lynn Bergmann said. “When we found out we were expecting our first st child on August 26, 2016, on September 14, 2016 my mother passed from an eight-year battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” she explained. “I was seven weeks pregnant and lost the only parent I ever had. He has supported me through it all.” Mrs. Bergmann said the couple welcomed daughter Hailey Shea into the world on April 22, 2017, and with support from friends and family, “it has been amazing,” she recalled. “He is an amazing dad and I could not have gotten a better partner and father!,” she added. Kelly Ann Alifano-Brognano of Westerleigh called her three children -- Amanda, Stephanie, and Anthony, “precious gifts from God.” “After they lost their father -- a retired NYPD detective who died suddenly from a 9/11 illness this past summer -- I see every day how strong and loving my kids are,” she said. “They get up each day and move on with their life even though their hearts are breaking inside,” she said, calling her three kids “amazing and strong-willed.” “They don’t quit,” she added. “They are great kids and they are my world!” Erica Prosper of Elm Park shared the same sentiment.

“I am most thankful for my two beautiful daughters, Angeliah and Nevaeh -- they are literally my world,” she said. She was quick to her add her mom, Iris, to her I thankful list. “She has been there to help us through it all. Having a child with severe medical conditions isn’t easy and having a great support system is everything,” Ms. Prosper said. “I’m beyond thankful.” Christina Kenny of West Brighton is thankful for her two beautiful and O healthy children, Layla and Leland, as well as her “amazing” fiance, Michael, and her health -- thanks to her “wonderful” surgeon Dr. Patsalides. “I am so thankful for my son, my husband, and the ‘village’ who helps me, especially my mama without whom I’m not sure where I would be,” Ms. Kelly said. “She has rescued me as a new mom more times than I can count this past year!” The appreciation and gratitude kept flowing in Annadale where Rebecca Lanza is counting her blessings -- two beautiful daughters -- Ava, 22 months, and Arianna, three months, and their dad, Anthony. He goes “above and beyond for us, which allows me to be home with our daughters every day,” Mrs. Lanza said. Likewise, there was also praise from soonto-be mom of three, Sami Caridi, who counted coffee on her thankful list. “I’m 30 weeks pregnant with a 4 year-old and an almost 2-year old and wouldn’t be able

it,” she said. “I’m thankful for my sons and my husband as well.” In Dongan Hills, meanwhile, a helpful and supportive family makes R Kristen and Andre Steidell most thankful this year. “They say it takes a village to raise children and it’s true,” Mrs. Steidell explained. “My family is a great support system and we come together and help each other.” She said her mom almost passed away two years ago, but is here today to share in her life. “Thankfully with lots of prayers she is with us and it brought our family closer together,” she explained.

LIPM Since they aren’t a big family, every moment counts so much, she noted. “My two-year-old daughter is the light of everyone’s life and such a blessing,” Mrs. Steidell said of toddler Anna Sophia Steidell. Family definitely ranked above and beyond for other Staten Island parents, like Antonietta Antonacci of Westerleigh. “I am truly thankful for my family time that we spend together,”

she said. “I cherish all the memories that we make together,” she added, noting that some of her favorite family time is spent at their second home in Durham, N.Y. “There is no time like family

time,” she said. Other parents are grateful for their civil servant spouses. “I am grateful my husband served 20 years for the NYPD and returned safely home every night and is now retired,” Kristi DeVito-Gregotowicz of Annadale said. “I am thankful for my family, all four of our children, and my amazing husband,” said Kaitlynn Delmar Murante of New Brighton.

“He works countless hours as a police officer and still makes time for us,” she added. Meanwhile, older family generations were a close second among Staten Island parents’ most thankful things this year. Kristie Wisniewski-Rothmund said she is most thankful and grateful for her 95-year-old grandmother of seven, who made her who she is today. “We moved in with her when I was seven,” after her parents divorced, Mrs. Rothmund, a Westerleigh wife and mother recalled. “My mom passed when I was 12. She raised me,” she explained, describing her younger self as “lazy.” “She pushed me and when I went to nursing school I failed a class by 1 point, and I was so headstrong I didn’t want to go back,” she continued. “There was Gertrude pushing me,” she said. “When I look back, she was always there. She was the best listener and never judged what or who you talked about!” Becoming parents was cause for others to count their blessings. “I have personally been through a lot in the last five years,” said Gina Marie Desantis. “I’m so thankful I am able to work, get married, and most of all be a mother to my beautiful son,” she said. “As we prepare for our future, I pray God blesses us with a healthy baby, a safe place for my son to go to school every day, and for my family and friends to be healthy and happy,” the Dongan Hills resident said. Christine Fiscardi-Lentinello of Huguenot feels fortunate for her 19-year marriage, her son, and Golden Doodle, Biscuit. “To have a son is everything, being a Mom has taught me about unconditional love,” she said, even though “we argue about screen time!” she joked. “They are my world,” Mrs. Lentinello said. “I must add having my mom and being so close to her -- it’s all about love and cherishing our time together,” she explained. “The importance of family means so much to me,” Mrs. Lentinello added. Friends topped the list for many parents, like Donna Lauser of Westerleigh. “I am truly grateful for the amazing lifelong friends I have made, and the great memories I have by volunteering at my son’s school and also being a member of Rolling Thunder,

which raises money for veterans’ causes. I am surrounded by amazing people doing wonderful things for others,” the wife and mother of four said. Meanwhile, after becoming a widow in 2015, Malina Ann Goodwin, moved with her two-year old son from Manhattan to Staten Island -- and values that as one of her most grateful moments. “Friends I have here told me I needed Staten Island because it’s all about families, it’s greener and has more living space,” the New Springville resident recalled. “It also put me on the path to meeting my true love,” she added, happy and excited for her upcoming Nov. 10 wedding. “He is the most wonderful man and best thing that happened to me and my son.” Thoughts turned to health for other Staten Islanders, like Terry Fuimo of Oakwood. “I am grateful for surviving a heart attack,” she said. “I get to be around to watch my beautiful granddaughters grow up.” Besides her 8-year-old son, Joshua, Great Kills resident Donna Zucconi is also thankful for her health. “I’m a single mom and he changed my world,” she said. “Not a day goes by I don’t thank God for such an amazing blessing.” She said she is also thankful to her family who accepted her decision to be a single mom -- and love her son as much as she does. “I’m thankful for my health, over the years I’ve watched too many friends battle various health issues. That makes you realized how truly blessed you are,” she said. STATEN ISLAND PARENT THANKS OUR FAMILY OF FRIENDS FOR THEIR CHILD PHOTO SUBMISSIONS. A. Claudia and Antonio DeVito B. Charlye Burke C. Autism During the Holidays TIPS FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

H

BY ADINA FRANKEL

Adina Frankel is an educator by passion and profession. She is a licensed behavior analyst, and has worked in the special education field for over 10 years. She is co-owner of Mastermind Behavior Services and is committed to helping children with autism receive quality services in their natural home environment, where the effects of progress is appreciated by the entire family.

olidays are great. Think family. Think friends. Think relaxing in the company of others who you love, but don’t get to spend enough time with. The holidays give such a warm, comfortable feeling of being together, of connection and bonding, of reminiscence and nostalgia over hot dinner and home-baked desserts. But holidays also can come with worries about how things will go for your loved one with autism. Sometimes it’s about how it will work out in Grandma’s house, where there are lots of delicate knick-knacks around, or whether Uncle Dan will tolerate your child’s obsession with turning on and off the lights, or how it will work out when your child can’t handle the noise or the food or the unfamiliar bathroom.

Here are some tips that might help with your planning for the upcoming holidays. It sounds pretty obvious, but first and most importantly is to plan ahead. You know your child better than anyone (although others might think they know best!), and you will know what your child’s triggers might be. If you are worried, try to pinpoint when and why your child will have a hard time. Once you figure out what the problem may be, you can make your holiday arrangements with it in mind. Knowing what the problems may be won’t solve them, but it will give you the clarity of working with those triggers. Try to set realistic goals. If your child needs his sleep, plan for a morning gathering. If loud noises set him off, try to arrange a quieter party, or host in your home, so that

you can keep things the way he likes. Keeping in mind what has worked in the past will keep your plans realistic and practical for your family. Bring along things that are comfortable and familiar to your child. A favorite blanket, a light-up spin toy that he loves, a familiar pillow or teddy, can make transitions that much simpler. A familiar item in an unfamiliar place can go a long way. If at all possible, prepare your hosts. Hosts can be overwhelmed, since not everyone knows how to deal with your child’s specific differences. Knowing ahead of time about your child’s preferences or dislikes can be a simple way for your host to set the environment for success. If your host can arrange for a room in the house to be available for your child, it can ease the way when he needs a break from the noise, the crowd, or simply to take a nap. When the going is rough, try to let go. Let go of the perfect picture -- the perfect-home-perfect-mother-perfect-child image. It’s hard, but important all the same. Allow your child to have more snacks, if it makes it easier for you (in the moment!). Allow for more TV time, if it will help you be the host this year. Allow for later bedtime, if the house is calm and you just want those few minutes for yourself. Sometimes, allowing the imperfection to happen, the changes in rules and routines of your home, can help you get through the morning or the cooking or the visiting. Don’t forget to take care of yourself! As a parent of a child with autism, you give 100% of yourself to your child every day, and especially during the holiday season. See if you can find the time to recharge your batteries, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Drink a coffee alone while reading the morning paper. Go for a short jog in the neighborhood. Make a phone call to a friend that you wish you’d speak to more often. Arrange for a sitter to come, and go out with your spouse for a drive, or find a relative who would be willing to take your child out for a walk... Just one last thing… Even with all the planning you may do, it may not turn out just the way you’d like for it to. You may need to leave early, turn off the music, or excuse yourself to take care of your loved one. You might be disappointed, embarrassed, angry at this turn of events -- and it’s completely normal for you to feel that way! Tell yourself that this is short-term, that you’re working hard now so that down the road it will be easier, better, and that your child will grow and learn and develop into an adult, with a productive life. In our December issue we will feature a list of holiday events for children with special needs, as well as roundups of brunch with Santa, events, holiday shows, Christmas tree and menorah lightings, festivals, and more holiday fun on (and off) the Island!

FROM STATEN ISLAND TO IRELAND, THE EMERALD ISLE BY MICHAEL REILLY

NYS Assemblyman, previous District 31 Community Education Council President and former New York City Police Department Lieutenant.

I

n September, Mary and I took our first trip across the Atlantic. We traveled to Ireland with the New York State American – Irish Legislators Society. The American – Irish Legislators Society is a bi-partisan organization of members of the New York State Legislature, committed to promoting awareness of Irish culture, ties between Ireland and New York, and fellowship among legislators of Irish decent or with an interest in Ireland or the American – Irish community. The society supports many Irish cultural organizations and initiatives. The forty-four member delegation consisting of legislators, friends and family was led by society President, Assemblyman Michael Cusick. We were joined by fellow society members including Staten Island legislators, Senator Diane Savino and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis. The 6 hour flight on Aer Lingus from JFK airport brought us to the Republic of Ireland capital city of Dublin on Thursday September 19th. We arrived at 8am, which is 5 hours ahead of New York time. We boarded our tour bus and hit the streets of Dublin, which began with the city’s main thoroughfare O’Connell Street, filled with statues. We visited the General Post Office, which served as headquarters for the Uprising Leaders during the “Easter Rising of 1916.” The beginning of the effort to establish a free Ireland from British rule. The panoramic tour took us by St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Trinity College, home of the famous “Book of Kells.” We visited EPIC, The Irish Emigration Museum, which depicted the influence the Irish had around the world. During our stay in Dublin we had the opportunity to dine with several members of the government including the Lord Mayors of Wexford and Dublin. We had the honor of being hosted by the President of Ireland, Michael Higgins at Aras an Uachtarain (equivalent to the United States White House). The architecture and landscape was magnificent. After 2 nights in Dublin we boarded the bus to travel to Belfast, the capital city of Northern Ireland, which remains part of the British United Kingdom. We went from using the Euro currency to the British pound. Our first stop in Northern Ireland was St. Patrick’s Centre, located in the town of Downpatrick. We heard the story of St. Patrick, who was kidnapped at a young age and brought to Ireland as a slave. After escaping he eventually returned to Ireland, bringing the teachings of Catholicism to Ireland.

Our stay in Belfast centered on the history of the “Troubles,” the conflict between the Catholics who are striving for a united Ireland and the Protestants, who are loyal to the British United Kingdom. The 6 counties of Northern Ireland remain a British territory. The “Good Friday Agreement” signed on April 10, 1998, calmed tensions and reduced the violence that rattled Belfast for decades. The Europa Hotel in Belfast, which hosts dignitaries from around the world, was the site of 36 bombings during the “Troubles.” Mary and I took the “Black Car Tour,” which took us through the Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods, which are lined with murals and divided by the “Peace Wall.” While in Belfast, we joined former Lord Mayor Mairtin O’Muiller for a visit to the James Connolly Centre, where we learned about the Irish Civil Rights movement and a tour of City Hall. This was capped off with a dinner with the current Lord Mayor of Belfast, John Finucane. After 3 nights in Belfast we headed to Galway with a wonderful scenic view of the Irish countryside, lined with the greenest grass and trees, sheep, cows and horses. We stopped at Derry to tour the Free Derry Museum which depicted the history of “Bloody Sunday,” the murder of Irish protesters by the British military. Along the way to Galway we joined dignitaries at Knock Airport for a tour of the newest hub in western Ireland. The American – Irish Legislators Society is exploring and advocating to bring direct flights to and from New York and Mayo. As we arrived in Galway we were overcome by the enchanting stone walls and cobbled streets. The River Corrib, which ran alongside our hotel was majestic and soothing. The city center had shops that were refurbished castles. During our stay in the magnificent city we visited the Claregalway Castle for a tour and dinner. A remarkable experience! With 2 nights in Galway we then headed to our last destination of Cork. During our travel to Cork we stopped along the Clare coast at the “Cliffs of Moher.” The Cliffs provide an amazing view from “O’Briens Tower,” a round stone tower above the Atlantic Ocean. Our delegation arrived in Cork for our final night with a visit at the University College Cork. The New York State Legislature has a special relationship with UCC, as we host an internship in Albany for their students studying government and political science. A wonderful venture that continues the partnership between New York State and Ireland. On our final day we were greeted by a fabulous rainbow as we arrived at Shannon Airport for our Aer Lingus flight back to New York’s JFK Airport. A fitting send-off from the Emerald Isle! oe Gambardella says he’s living the dream. “I’m truly blessed to be able to play hockey for a living,” the lifelong Eltingville resident told me recently. The 25-year-old left wing just started his third season playing for the Bakersfield Condors in the American Hockey League. Last season, he was called up by the Edmonton Oilers on New Year’s Eve and played in 15 games with the National Hockey League club. Considering you can count on one hand the number of Staten Islanders to play in the NHL, it’s quite an accomplishment. “I never really saw myself playing in the NHL,” Gambardella said. “I was hoping to get a college education out of playing hockey.” Indeed, hockey eventually brought him to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, where he majored in business and played on the hockey team. He had his resume ready to send out during his senior year, but “at the end of the season a few NHL teams came knocking on my door,” he said. Gambardella chose to sign a free-agent agreement with the Oilers and headed for Bakersfield. The California team may be nearly 3,000 miles from home, but that’s nothing compared to the road he’s traveled to reach this point in his life. And he is grateful for the sacrifices made by his parents, Robert and Roe, to help him get there. “Hockey is the most expensive sport and I credit my parents for making the sacrifices that gave me the best opportunity to succeed,” Gambardella said.

Gambardella said his dad was “a great overall athlete,” but excelled in body building and is a former Mr. Brooklyn. Robert exposed Joe’s older brother, Rob Jr., to the usual sports as a kid, but hockey gave him the biggest kick. Joe got started on skates when he was old enough thanks to his dad and brother, and then younger brother, Chris, also fell in love with the sport. “At one point,” Joe said, “all three of us were playing travel hockey, and that lasted 10-11 years. It was very hectic for my parents, who often found themselves trying to be several places at the same time.” Joe starred in hockey at Monsignor Farrell High School, but opted to skip his senior year of high school hockey to play junior hockey with the New Jersey Rockets. Next he headed to Iowa to hook up with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League, the top junior league sanctioned by USA Hockey. That led him to UMass-Lowell and, ultimately, professional hockey. “I’m a lucky guy,” he said. He said he’s also lucky to be engaged to Jenna Kenny, whom he met serendipitously while working with her younger brother at the Staten Island Skating Pavilion. And with a July 2020 wedding planned, Gambardella is looking ahead to the possibility he will follow in his mom and dad’s footsteps as a hockey parent. “I’d get them on skates early and see if they like it,” Gambardella said of his own children. “But whether they like it or not, I want them to enjoy their childhood and have the opportunity to play multiple sports. Whatever they choose to play.” If hockey ends up being their sport of choice, Gambardella said he would encourage them to start playing in house leagues and, if they continue to grow in the sport, move on to a travel team. Gambardella already works with young athletes at the behest of Jenna, who suggested he start a hockey performance company that does camps, clinics and private lessons at Protec Ponds Ice Center in Somerset, New Jersey, going on four years. “Today, a lot of people believe you should be on the ice 12 months a year,” Gambardella said. But “I tell kids to do whatever they want as long as they stay active.” As for his own hockey plans, Gambardella will continue for now to toil on the West Coast and wait for his next call-up to the Oilers. “You can’t rely on expectations,” Gambardella said. “You have to play the cards you’re dealt. I just show up at the rink every day ready to go out and work hard to get better.”

Important Educational Questions EDUCATORS WEIGH IN ON CURRENT TOPICS

Experienced educators and authors Peggy Gisler and Marge Eberts give solid advice about everything school and education-related. Read more Q & A on siparent.com/dearteacher Parents should send questions and comments to dearteacher@dearteacher.com

Question: My third grader is not consistently what I would call a good speller. She will get a word right on a spelling test and then misspell it a few days later on an assignment. Is there any way to improve her spelling? – For Improvement Answer: Your first step is to determine the severity of your child’s spelling problems. It may not be as serious as you believe. Talk to the child’s teacher and find out if she is spelling most words correctly or not and if the teacher believes the child has a spelling problem. Of course, a spelling problem could be serious and caused by a learning disability. In that case, testing would need to be done. Nevertheless, whether it is a learning disability, or the child simply has not learned a satisfactory way to spell words, here is a good way for children to tackle and remember how to spell the words on spelling lists. When your child brings home the weekly list, you should have her write the words on the list as you call them out. Then she should correct what she has written against the spelling list and write down any words that she misspelled opposite the misspelling. Then

immediately quiz her again using only the words that she has misspelled – limiting this number to no more than 10 words. If she misspells any words this time, the correct spelling is written again. Repeat these steps until all misspelled words are spelled correctly. Do this every day until the night before the test when you test her over all the words, and she corrects any mistakes. Next for a few weeks, add to her new spelling list a few of the words that she has frequently misspelled when you tested her earlier. What you have done is repeatedly had her spell the words so she should remember them. Question: It seems like an ever-ending argument whether all their media usage helps or hurts kids. What are some arguments on the positive side? – Help Answer: Children today are surrounded by technology. Homes have screens in almost every room of the house - television screens, computer screens, tablets and smartphones too! Everywhere you look children in restaurants, on planes, riding in the back of a car all

LIPM have their faces staring into some media device. And this definitely brings up the argument on whether media usage is helping or hurting children today. A positive argument for children using devices is that they will be using them in school starting as early as pre-school. Thus, children who are not comfortable on different devices will be at a disadvantage. Children in school are also taking their standardized tests on computers, and children in the upper grades who do not have good keyboarding skills will definitely be at a disadvantage when typing a timed essay on the computer. Schools vary on the amount of technology that is used in the classrooms. Some schools are becoming paperless and children do everything from reading their textbooks to completing homework assignments on a device. Young children today mostly prefer tablets to even television. On the other hand, many educators feel that children who stare into a screen too long totally lose their ability to interact or even to interpret social cues around them. Plus, doctors feel that children tend to pick up weight because they are inactive when they are on a device, and psychologists even feel that children’s brains can be rewired due to spending too much time on devices. So, the argument will continue about devices and how they are affecting our children but there is total agreement that too much time on devices will definitely have an effect.

Celebrating 23 Years of Caring for Your Children

Question: What is the best way to teach young children how to begin to understand numbers? - Want to Teach Answer: It takes time for children to understand the concept of numbers. They see a group of four balls, but it takes a while before they can assign the number 4 to the group of balls. The best way for children to learn to develop number concepts is by having them handle everyday objects in your home. They should begin by sorting items, then order them in some way (smallest to largest). Next, children should be exposed to rote counting to learn the names of the numbers. The final step is one-to-one matching (putting a cup with a saucer). Here are a few ideas to help you get started: Sorting: Have your children sort laundry items into piles according to ownership. Socks are excellent for sorting into color and size. Ordering: Break spaghetti into a few different sized pieces. Then have your children arrange them by size from shortest to longest. Counting: Begin by teaching the youngest children to count from one to five. When they are ready, extend the number to 10. Then play counting games at the dinner table. Matching: Ask your children how many will be eating dinner. Then have them count out the plates and cups that will be needed. November 2019 • siparent.com
