LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Dear Readers, For many of us, taking out the Halloween decorations this year will feel a little different. There are parents who will not be able to find that cherished decoration from years past because it was taken away by the power of a storm named Sandy. As excited as we are about the start of this Halloween season, it brings with it a variety of emotions—one of the most powerful being a reminder that no matter who we are, life can change in a moment. Every Staten Islander has their own story about the impact that October storm had on their lives. Many are still recovering from the disaster it brought. We did, however, come together as a community to help each other. Some found new friendships that are cherished now and will be forever. For those who lost a loved one, I know how difficult it can be to mark the one-year anniversary. You are in our thoughts and prayers. While Sandy will always be a part of the history of Staten Island, we know, in time, we will recover—just as we’ve done after the 9/11 attacks. We are a remarkably strong and resilient community. We have 6,574 days from the time a child is born until his or her 18th birthday. Only 6,574 days to impress upon them so many lessons, lessons that were right there in front of us during the aftermath of the storm the importance of doing the right thing, helping those in need, volunteering, going the “extra mile” and many more. As any parent will tell you, children are so absorbent! They soak in everything they witness. Make sure you use your 6,574 days to let them see the best of human nature. There are so many negative examples they may be exposed to from media sources. Let them know that kindness and compassion does exist in their world. When my daughter, Nicole, went to help out in the days following the storm, she came home with stories about how many of her friends she encountered volunteering in all capacities. Regardless of age, young and old offered assistance to those who needed it. We are a great community and we should all be so proud to be a part of it. For those who want to participate in a ceremony, please take a look at our online calendar for information on what events are taking place. “Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” ~ Robert Brault, 1985 Share your thoughts with us on Facebook.

S.I. LIVING Community & School News
A guide to community events
All it takes is a few days of crisp weather, the type that makes you happy to wear a sweater, to get into the spirit of autumn. Everyone is back into their school routines and it’s time to start thinking about getting cozy with the family during the cooler months ahead. But don’t go into hibernation just yet – there are too many things to do and see on Staten Island this month. Here’s a sampling of the good stuff to come. Check our Facebook page (We are Friends, aren’t we?) to find out more up-to-the-minute info, or take a look at our online calendar at siparent.com. Enjoy! Staten Island Day What “forgotten borough?” We’ve got a day all our own coming up on Sunday, October 13. Staten Island Day will celebrate the strength of our community, not to mention the strength of our runners - the Staten Island Half Marathon, hosted by the New York Road Runners, happens to take place on the same day. Following the Half-Marathon is a 1. 5 Mile Fun Run that will end with a family-friendly festival dedicated to making a positive impact on the borough and providing support for ongoing Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts. NYRR will donate the net proceeds of the race to the Siller Foundation and ECHO (Emergency Children's Help Organization), two organizations that are helping the hardest-hit areas of the community.
Important School Dates in October Here are some important school events happening in October. Remember to pay attention to any updates that the DOE sends out or posts on its website, schools.nyc.gov.

Nationwide Rally for Afterschool Programs On October 17, the 14th annual nationwide rally called Lights On Afterschool will help raise awareness for afterschool programs. Students, parents, educators, policy makers, and other concerned citizens are invited to come together and celebrate the success of afterschool programming that works to keep children safe and eager to learn. The event, which is sponsored by the Afterschool Alliance, creates awareness of the many benefits of afterschool programs that encourage children to be curious and involved in their academic and extracurricular interests. Thousands of communities nationwide will celebrate the event through science fairs, rallies, sports, performances, and other events. Last year, more than one million people participated in over 8,000 Lights On Afterschool events, and the Afterschool Alliance is expecting the same this year. For more information, visit www.afterschoolalliance.org.

Annual Children’s Parade to Return to Staten Island The 6th Annual Staten Island Children’s Day Parade is set to take place on Saturday, October 26 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Henry Kaufman Campgrounds (1131 Manor Road, across from Susan Wagner High School). The goal of this exciting event is to celebrate the benefits of a public school education and to focus on past and future achievements of our students. The free event is sponsored by the New York City Department of Education, and all are welcome.
Candy for a Cause Why would children EVER give away their Halloween candy? When it’s for a good cause, of course. Several Staten Island dentists (no surprise there!) are “buying back” candy from generous youngsters by way of cash, coupons, and other creative currencies, including an Opportunity prize, for which a child will receive one raffle ticket per pound of candy donated. The candy will then be collected and sent to military support groups like Operation Gratitude. The following dentists are helping the cause - you can also visit www.halloweencandybuyback.com to find out more about the program: • Staten Island Pediatric Dentistry 195 Bridgetown Street • 718-761-7316 • Kids Dental 4864 Arthur Kill Road • 718 356-5437 • Dr. Phyllis Merlino 268 Todt Hill Road • 718 761-2090 Additionally, families can help meet the 100,000 Toothbrush Challenge, which aims to also put a toothbrush in every

7TH GRADE IS THE TIME TO THINK ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL
ust as your child is adjusting to Middle School, it's time to set your sites on High School. Since this decision can cause stress and anxiety in some kids, it's best to prepare early and with as much input from your child as possible, allowing them to feel comfortable with the ultimate decision on where they will spend four years of their lives. Things have changed greatly since the last two generations of high school students were making choices. In most cases, there were not many options beyond a local public school, a private high school or a specialized high school. Today, NYC provides several different types of schools and programs. Some programs cater to specific interests and skills while some are more beneficial to serve students that are new to the country and others spotlight creating specific learning environments. There are over 400 public high schools offering nearly 700 programs throughout the city.

You and your child should consider preferences, interests, and academic needs. Today’s students can apply to the types of high schools and programs that suit them best. Some of today’s choices include: Small Schools- They enroll about 500 students. They also form partnerships with non-profit organizations, cultural institutions and businesses. Some of the schools have themes such as science, law, art and business. Career and Technical Schools (CTE)– These schools integrate academic study with workforce skills in specific career pathways. They offer students the opportunity to graduate high school with industry-specific competencies and skills that lead to college or entry into the workforce. Through these programs, students can earn the Regents Diploma with a Technical Endorsement. iZone Schools– These schools incorporate new strategies, tools and technologies to personalize the needs, motivations and strengths of individual students. Small Learning Communities (SLCs)– They are small academic communities of about 400 students within larger comprehensive schools.
You can find out which schools have SLCs in The Directory of Public High Schools. Specialized High Schools– These are highly-selective public high schools designed to serve the needs of academically and artistically gifted students. There are nine specialized schools in NYC. With the exception of LaGuardia High School, admission is based on the Specialized High Schools Admission Test (SHSAT). If your child is considering a specialized high school, you may want to consider prep courses or private tutoring to specifically tailored to the strategies necessary for these tests. Charter Schools– These are independent public schools. Their own not-for-profit Board of Trustees governs them. They operate on the terms of five-year performance contracts known as Charters. All students can apply and admittance is determined through a lottery. Preference is given to siblings of students already enrolled and students living in the charter school’s district. Transfer Schools– These are small high schools. They are designed to reengage students who have dropped out or have fallen behind. During the admissions process, you will be allowed to rank up to 12 school programs in order of preference. Consider each program’s Admissions Methods and Admissions Priorities listed in the High School Directory. Students with disabilities participate in the high school admissions process in the same way as their non-disabled peers and may apply to any school or program listed in the Directory of New York City High Schools. Students that are recommended to attend high school in a specialized District 75 programs or New York State Approved nonpublic school program that serves

students with disabilities are placed in schools through a separate process. Students interested in applying to a New York City public high school from a private or parochial school should speak with their guidance counselor in middle school. High School applications and materials will be available from the guidance counselors in the fall of 8th grade. It is advisable to visit http://schools.nyc.gov/ChoicesEnrollment/High/Directory and start obtaining information in the 7th grade.
APPLYING TO A CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL In order to be admitted into Catholic high schools in September of 2014, students must take an admissions examination —Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools (TACHS) —by November 2013. Students will be allowed to select three high schools. The results, along with school records and other information, are then sent to the high school principals to assist them in making admission decisions. If you are considering a Catholic High School, you may want to consider prep courses or private tutoring to prepare your child for the Test for Admission to Catholic High Schools (TACHS). Information about the application process is available at www.tachsinfo.com.

Like DOE High School Fairs, students and parents are invited to visit the High Schools to view the facilities and to evaluate the programs offered. Most of the schools schedule open houses prior to the TACHS Examination. If a school does not have an Open House scheduled or if you are unable to visit on the date of its Open House, you can contact the school and ask to set up an appointment to visit. Need more help? If you would like to discuss the admission process and the high school application, speak to your child’s guidance counselor. Information is key to making good decisions. GOOD SPORTS by Joe LoVerde
SOMETHING MISSING THIS SOCCER SEASON Jack Hynes was soccer on Staten Island when soccer wasn’t cool. Indeed, long before Pele’s New York Cosmos were attracting 70,000-plus spectators to the old Giants Stadium and prior to the days when thousands of kids were competing in the Staten Island Youth Soccer League, Hynes had put together a world-class career on the pitch, both as a professional and national star. Jack left us on August 3 at the age of 92, making this the first soccer season to begin without him in nearly a century. His legacy will live on, however. Oddly, until he was named to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1977, Hynes might have been the Island’s best-kept sports secret. And if one of his sons’ teachers hadn’t tipped off the local press about that honor, who knows when the sports community in his home borough would have discovered his achievements? I met Jack at his home in Oakwood to conduct the first interview with him after his induction to the Hall. He had a frosted mug and cold beer waiting, and the stories about his soccer career left me astonished that we were just learning of this treasure midway through his 50s. Born in Lochgelly, Scotland, Hynes was 13 when he immigrated to the U.S. His soccer talents weren’t kept secret for long, as he played professionally as a teen and quickly made his mark against the best in the world. He was a key player on the St. Mary’s Celtic of Brooklyn team that won U.S. Open Cup in 1939, and he made his mark on the international scene while starting for the United States in four World Cup qualifying matches in 1949, when the U.S. finished second to Mexico. He continued to star on the pitch as a member of the New York Americans of the American Soccer League, winning that league’s

championship as a member of Brooklyn Hakoah in 1957 and three years later with Colombo of New York. Jack wasn’t just a hero in sports, however. He fought in World War II and was injured in the Battle of the Bulge at the end of 1944 into ‘45, which earned him a Purple Heart. And he served as a New York City firefighter from 1947 until his retirement in 1975. Hynes went on to coach at Monsignor Farrell HS, where he guided the Lions to 12 undefeated seasons over two decades and put together a record of 207-67-21. Among the players he coached were his sons John and Ed, who is the current coach at Farrell, and a fellow named John Wolyniec, who went on to set the scoring record at Fordham University and play 11 years in the pros. Jack continued to rack up recognition, being named to the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Eastern New York Soccer Hall of Fame a year later. But I think Jack was proudest not of his own accomplishments, but of the fact that the game he loved had finally gained respect in this country. When the rest of us finally noticed what the world had known all along thanks to the Pele-led Cosmos in the late 1970s, Jack would taunt us meat-and-potato American sports fans with his good humor and his ever-present Scottish brogue. It’s hard not to think about him this time of year, when kids across the Island are back on the soccer fields. The game in these parts won’t be the same without him.
Joe LoVerde has been coaching youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. He’s also a longtime newspaper editor.

CELEBRATIONS
>>>
HALLOWEEN AROUND THE WORLD
alloween dates back thousands of years to ancient Celts and Europeans. Although Halloween is largely associated with the celebrations that take place across much of North America, where 65% of Americans decorate their homes and places of business in the Halloween spirit, it is celebrated in various ways all around the globe.
H
England: In the past, Brits tossed objects such as stones, vegetables and nuts into a bonfire to frighten away the spirits. These symbolic sacrifices also were used as a form of fortune-telling. If a pebble thrown into the flames at night was no longer visible in the morning, then it was believed that the person who tossed the pebble would not survive another year. INCORPORATE SOME GLOBAL TRADITIONS FOR A FUN AND EDUCATIONAL HALLOWEEN. Halloween fell out of favor after the Protestant Reformation on the table on Halloween night before going to bed. It was once spread through the country. However, in recent years some have believed that such items would welcome the dead souls back to begun to adopt the American tradition of trick-or-treating. Earth on a night Austrians considered to be full of strong cosmic energies. Hong Kong: A Halloween-type festival in Hong Kong is known as "Yue Lan," which is the festival of the hungry ghosts. It is believed Czechoslovakia: Czechs place chairs by a fireside on Halloween that, during this time, spirits roam the world for 24 hours. night. There are enough chairs for each living and dead family member. France: Halloween is considered an American holiday by most French and was relatively unknown before 1996. Ireland: Ireland is thought to be the birthplace of Halloween, and many of the same traditions of old are still practiced today. In addition to costumes and treats, individuals may play an applebobbing game called "snap-apple," where participants have to try to take a bite of an apple suspended on a string. Children also play tricks on neighbors, including "knock-a-dolly," which is essentially a variation on "ring-and-run." Spanish-Speaking Nations: Many Spanish-speaking nations celebrate "El Dia de los Muertos." It is supposed to be a joyous event where people remember friends and family members who have died. Candles and incense are burned to help the departed find his or her way home. Austria: Some people will leave bread, water and a lighted lamp

Italy: Halloween traditions have just recently begun to blossom in Italy, where decorations and pumpkins are popular. While many of the traditions borrow from the Americans, there is at least one uniquely Italian tradition taking place in the hill town of Corinaldo. La Notte delle Streghe, "The Night of the Witches," occurs in this town with music, dancing and a witch-themed fashion show that names Miss Strega (Miss Witch). Australia: Halloween isn't as popular in Australia as it is in the United States and Canada. Australians may celebrate Halloween as Guy Fawkes Eve or Mischief Night. Children create mischief or get treats. Many Australians simply celebrate the holiday with a dance at their schools. Halloween is alive and well around the world. Perhaps this year North American families will want to incorporate some global traditions into their standard Halloween plans.

Question: It's the same story at home Improving and at school -- our child in kindergarten Children’s Basic needs to be encouraged and praised to get Skills and her to do daily tasks. This does not upset me, Addressing but her teacher is concerned. -- Like to Praise Parental Concerns Answer: There is a difference between praise and encouragement. To praise is to make an expression of approval, while to encourage is to inspire or to urge on. Both are important to children and can build their self-confidence. To be meaningful, praise needs to be given for results. It has no value if children do not deserve it. The more praise given for things not worthy of it, the less effective it will be. When it comes to praise, more isn't better, as it may put too much pressure on children to earn it. On the other hand, encouragement focuses more on effort and can be given whether or not children are successful. Try to cut back on the praise and to encourage in a low-key way to make it easier for your child to become a self-starter. For example, just a smile or eye contact could do it.

Answer: You definitely need to schedule a conference to find out what is going on. Struggling at the start of the school year certainly does not mean your child needs to be in special education. It sounds like the teacher is being proactive and wants to address any problems before they become more severe. Before the conference, take the time to write down a few questions such as the following:
Ages 0-3

Question: At back-to-school night, the teacher asked me to schedule a conference with her because she described my daughter as being a struggling student. Is the teacher trying to tell me my child is now going to be placed in the special-education program? – Help
1. What academic subject or subjects are causing my child to struggle? 2. What are your suggestions for ways that things can be turned around? 3. Can we look over some of my child's academic work and see her specific difficulties? 4. Does my child need a tutor? 5. Do you offer before- or after-school help that my child can attend? 6. What are some ways that I can help the child? 7. Can we schedule a meeting in a few weeks to see how my child is making progress?
What are the Common Core State Standards? Question:: Our state has adopted something called the Common Core State Standards. What is the purpose of these standards? Who created them? What subjects are included in these standards? How will they affect what is taught in the classroom? Will there be tests based on the Common Standards? -- Want to Know Answer: The purpose of the standards is to get every child in grades K through 12 ready for college and the workforce. The standards tell exactly what essential knowledge and skills students should have acquired at the end of each grade level no matter where they live. Don't think of them, however, as a statement of all that can and should be taught. States, districts and schools are free to add more content. Furthermore, the standards do not dictate how teachers are to teach, but they are going to require new teaching styles. It is important to understand that these standards were a multistate effort that was coordinated by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. It is not mandatory for states to adopt these standards; however, most have done so since they were developed in 2010 by teachers, school administrators and experts. The Common Core State Standards are for math and Englishlanguage arts. You can definitely expect them to be part of new textbooks and standardized assessment tests in the coming years. These standards are likely to affect how many things will be taught in the classroom. It is expected that spelling will receive a lot less emphasis, cursive handwriting is likely to disappear and less time will be spent on drill in math and memorizing facts. The emphasis is going to be on critical thinking, rather than repetition and rote learning. Plus, your children are probably going to spend more time working on projects and in teams to solve problems.
Staten Island University Hospital
The states are currently collaborating to develop common assessments that are aligned to the standards to replace today’s end of year state assessments. These new assessments will first be used in 2014-2015 school year. There are no efforts at the present time to develop standards in other academic subjects by the developers of the Common Core State Standards. However, separate organizations have developed or are now revising standards for science, foreign languages and arts education. You can find out even more about the Common Core State Standards online at corestandards.org.

Play Safe Dr. Julian Bailes, M.D., Chair of the Pop Warner Medical Advisory Committee, also has tips on how to participate safely in youth sports: • The brain is one of the most vital organs in a child’s body. When playing youth sports, brain health must always be top-of-mind. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acid DHA is important in supporting brain development in children and young adults, and may also improve memory and cognitive function. DHA is found in algae and fish, and children should consume at least 200 mg of DHA a day in fatty fish, fortified foods and beverages or with a daily DHA supplement. Remember to check with your healthcare provider before making changes to your diet. • Vitamin D, along with calcium, is essential for healthy bone development in children and adolescents. Most parents make lists. Organized parents can actually find those lists when they need them. Dozens of apps promise to help, consolidating scraps of paper and tattered notebooks into one central location.
GET ORGANIZED! APPS TO MATCH YOUR PERSONAL STYLE
The trick, of course, is finding an app designed by people who understand your organizational style. Before experimenting with any of the apps below, do a quick selfappraisal. Some parents really don’t need a list that tells them to buy bread, milk and bananas—they do that automatically every time they step into a grocery store. For others, a very thorough grocery list means they can turn their attention to the toddler squirming in the cart or even delegate the shopping to another family member. Here are other things to consider. Do you jot notes all day long or allocate a specific time to getting organized? Do you need to integrate work and family tasks or would you prefer to keep them separate? Is your cellphone attached to you or do you hunt for it every time it rings? Is color coding a help or a distraction? Do you want to synch with your spouse, friends, kids? Does it appeal to you to mingle practical tasks with personal record-keeping or would you prefer to keep photos and journaling separate from your To-Do list?

Answering these questions will help you decide which of the apps in the following list is worth a test drive. All are efficient list makers that will remind you of due dates and deadlines. Most include calendars. All but one are free though many have premium features that are available for a monthly fee. All work with multiple platforms and many interface easily with other programs such as Google Calendar. Each has its own feel, so you’ll want to look for the one that seems like it will fit seamlessly into what you already do. Customize your lists. Wunderlist is a streamlined, no-nonsense app that lets you set up your own lists in categories that make sense to you. Tasks can be assigned to others or sub-divided into smaller to-do lists. It’s perfect for minimalists and those who are easily distracted by features they don’t really need. (www.wunderlist.com) Prioritize tasks. Toodledo encourages you to assign a priority to everything on your list so you can easily see what needs to be done TODAY. This app also encourages you to estimate the time a task will take. Then, when you find yourself with an unexpected gap in your schedule, you can put in the amount of time you have and generate a list of projects that will fit neatly into that slot. (www.toodledo.com) Take advantage of location. Any.Do has a clean, uncluttered interface so you can quickly see what needs to be done on any given day. This app also interfaces with a GPS component so it will remind you to do an errand when you are in the vicinity of the right store. (www.any.do)
Manage from your desktop. Cozi has mobile apps for iPhone and Android but its strength is its family-oriented website where you can keep (and share) a calendar, develop menu plans, organize shopping lists and even record memorable family moments in a journal. The site anticipates things busy parents might need with special features such as a packing list for vacations or the release dates for family-friendly movies. (www.cozi.com) Coordinate with others. Remember the Milk was one of the first successful organizing apps. Today, it has a lively community of users and makes effortless connections with a large number of other programs including Evernote, Twitter and even Siri, the personal assistant on iPhone. Because it synchs so well, this app is ideal for parents who want to communicate, coordinate and delegate with other family members and co-workers. (www.rememberthemilk.com) Color code everything. Awesome Note is a one stop app for people who would like to integrate their to-do lists and calendar with photos, maps, notes and even sketches. Folders are colorcoordinated and you can assign fonts, icons and backgrounds to different kinds of information, making this an excellent choice for people who appreciate visual cues. (www.bridworks.com) Harvest your thoughts. Scatterbrain will appeal to parents who are constantly changing channels. The app includes an appointment calendar, To Do lists and a special section for “thoughts”, random and otherwise. By assigning colors, you can quickly see all of the items related to work, school, home, etc. (www.scatterbrain.it)

Track anything. Lumen Trails costs $2.99 and it’s only available for Apple products but it’s an extremely versatile app that lets you track everything. In addition to making lists and taking notes, you can keep track of calories and workouts, time logs and expenses, homework and naptimes. There’s even a journaling option. (www.lumentrails.com) If testing and learning yet another app seems like just another task for your To Do list, you might want to take advantage of websites that offer printable organizers. In the download section of Mommytracked.com, there’s a weekly calendar, a menu planner and even a carpool list for ten minute tasks that can be tucked into odd moments. Organizedhome.com also has a good selection of practical printouts. (www.organizedhome.com/printable) One last tip—once you’ve made your lists, hold them loosely. Most days, the best things that happen, especially with young children, aren’t on anyone’s agenda. Happy families are invariably a little disorganized so leave lots of room for creativity, spontaneity and improvisation. If necessary, put that on your list!

• Be wary of ANY email requesting that you verify financial account information online, even if it appears to be from your bank. Always call the bank, at a number you’ve used before, to verify their request. • Beware of emails or online ads with offers that seem too good to be true. Emails announcing you’ve won a sweepstakes may be phishing for your bank account number. Pop-ups advertising free downloadable software may be disguising spyware or malware. • Make regular backups of important information on your computer so that all is not lost in the event of an equipment malfunction, an error or a cyber attack. Teach your children cyber security as well. According to the Federal Trade Commission, more than 19,000 cases of child identity theft were reported in 2011, up from about 6,000 in 2003.

How old were you when your first child started kindergarten? Did your age make a difference in the relationships you developed with other moms?
COMMENTS:
Christine McCue: My first I was 30 and I fit right in. My last I was 42 and it makes a HUGE difference. I have very little in common with most of the moms in the 1st grade as I'm also looking at colleges for my oldest and maintained those friendships.
Rosanna Varriale Gottlieb: I don't think age plays a role either. I started my daughter in Pre K in the school we will be using for all our children for years to come and I met moms of all different ages who are well on their way to becoming some of the best friends I ever had or ever will have. Our ages vary, but our children will grow together and we will grow together as well. We share something special in common, so we get to experience all these sweet stages of life together.

Last month on Facebook we chatted about back-toschool, Grandparents, the start of the football season, and so much more! They all seem to be very cliquey. Staten Islanders, it's where we post Lisa Mustari Knapp: I was 36 and was one of the older moms. We all got updates on what's going on, as well along very well. Did your child take a pacifier when he or she was younger? If so, how long did it take for you to wean your child off the pacifier?
COMMENTS:
Lori O'Leary-Scorsese: About 15 months. I made a game out of it. If you make it fun it is less traumatizing.
Maria Pinero: I took the pacifier away from my daughter at 9 months. It took about 3 days for her to get used to not having it. I took it away so early so her teeth wouldn't shift.
Catherine Cassiere-Pisani: My daughter was just three. She only used it at night but we left it for the Easter Bunny and he left her presents. No crying at all. Loved her gifts lol. Isabella Bertelli: Took him off at 13 months. He gave it up easily because I switched types on him and he did not want to take the new shaped nipple.

ASK THE DOCTOR Carmen Torrado-Jule, MD
SICK DAY GUIDELINES FOR CHILDREN WITH DIABETES Diabetes Mellitus is the most common metabolic disease of childhood. It occurs when blood sugar (glucose) levels are above normal. Glucose is used for energy by the cells in the body. Insulin (a hormone) allows for glucose to enter the cells to provide energy. The most common type of diabetes in children is Type I Diabetes (formally known as juvenile diabetes). This occurs when there is damage to the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. In other types of diabetes in children, the body develops insulin resistance. The pancreas is able to produce insulin, but the body does not recognize it. Children can develop either type of diabetes. Other less common disorders may also cause diabetes. Any form of diabetes mellitus will cause high blood sugar. Insulin injections may be needed to treat diabetes regardless of the cause. However, children with Type I Diabetes will require insulin replacement, usually several times daily, to control blood glucose levels and promote adequate growth and development. We all need insulin to live. Children with diabetes who are on insulin therapy may develop hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA is a serious lifethreatening condition that if unrecognized or left untreated may lead to diabetic coma or even death. Fortunately, DKA is a PREVENTABLE condition. Children with diabetes are at an increased risk for DKA when they are ill. This is especially important, since flu season and winter are approaching. Therefore, it is important to know what to do when a child is ill. These are called Sick Day Guidelines. A sick day is a cold, the flu, infections of any kind, dental problems, surgery, burns, stress (physical/emotional), and any underlying illness. Parents often have many questions about what they should do if their diabetic child becomes ill. Discuss in advance with your child’s doctor sick day management guidelines, and have them readily available. Always call your child’s doctor with questions if you are uncertain as to what to do. Below is a list of some commonly-asked questions with some useful recommendations.
What happens to my child’s blood sugar when s/he is sick? During an illness, blood sugar may rise and the body will make ketones (substances that are toxic to the body and a warning sign that DKA may develop).
60
OCTOBER 2013
www.siparent.com
What should I check for when my child is sick? Test the blood sugar at least every 4 hours. Test the urine for ketones every 4 hours or every time your child voids. If ketones are present, test also the blood sugar, and take extra insulin and fluids, as directed by your doctor.
Should I stop giving insulin if my child is sick? NEVER STOP INSULIN. If you are not sure how much to give, call your child’s doctor. Write down the blood sugar values, ketone test results, how much food and liquid your child is taking, the insulin doses, and if your child has fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual breathing, or lethargy. Take usual insulin doses unless blood sugar is less than 70 mg/dL or more than 250 mg/dL. If your child takes other medications, check with your child’s doctor. Some medications may be continued while the child is ill, but others may not. DO NOT LET THE CHILD EXERCISE. What should my child eat and drink if s/he is sick? Try to get your child to eat. If s/he cannot eat, try giving crackers, toast, chicken soup, chicken broth, or bouillon. During an illness, a high blood sugar, fever, diarrhea, and vomiting may cause the body to lose fluids. This is called dehydration. Offer your child plenty of clear fluids every half hour to an hour. If your child is vomiting, nauseous, or complains of “stomach upsets,” offer small sips of fluids every 15 minutes. Some examples of fluids are: water, sugar-free/caffeine-free drinks, sugar-free ice pops, or sugar-free gelatin. If the blood sugar is low, give regular gelatin, regular ice pops, or regular soft drinks and juices. If the blood sugar remains low, you may need to give a glucagon injection and call your doctor. If your child continues vomiting, call your child’s doctor. When should I call my child’s doctor? ~Any time an underlying illness needs to be treated. ~If urine shows moderate to large ketones. ~If the blood sugar is below 70 mg/dL or above 250 mg/dL, or a rising blood sugar if your child is using an insulin pump. ~If you notice your child is losing weight. ~Child has a fruity smell on breath. ~VOMITING. Never assume that nausea or vomiting is normal for the condition (like a stomach virus or food poisoning). ~Diarrhea. ~Pain in the stomach, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. ~High fever. What should I have ready in case my child is ill? Have a “Sick Day Box” ready with the following supplies: Drinks, gelatin (sugar-free and with sugar) Broth or bouillon Saltines, crackers, toast Ketone strips Blood glucose meter, strips, blood glucose log Glucagon emergency kit Insulin, syringes/ pen needles Acetaminophen, ibuprofen These simple guidelines are meant to prevent a sick day event from becoming a potentially life-threatening condition. COVER STORY
AFTER THE STORM:
One Year Later
n October 29, 2012, Sandy hit Staten Island. Those who heeded the evacuation warnings followed the news wherever they were staying until the power went out, to try to determine how their home fared in the storm. It was only after the storm had passed through did homeowners venture back home, and for too many of them, the horrific site they discovered was way beyond their worst nightmares.
January began the “Rebuild. Renew. Recover.” series that covered “how Staten Islanders are all in this together as the long process to full renewal and recovery unfolds.” It inspired us to resolve in the new year to remember, to continue to help, and to follow what the Federal, State, City, and Staten Island politicians do to ensure better land management and protection, and to help Staten Island Sandy victims become survivors, able to move on.
Many were now homeless. Others grieved the loss of life of family, friends, and neighbors. Boats were on sidewalks far from the beach. Cars were overturned, standing upright at an angle, or destroyed by the salt water. They saw decks uprooted and in neighbors’ yards. Sheds were missing. They found entire homes uprooted and down the block, and other homes damaged to the point of devastation. It resembled a war zone!
In February, we looked at how life had returned to normal for many of us on Staten Island after the holidays. With the start of the new year, the tendency was to try to resume a normalcy in our lives and the lives of our children. The emphasis of the love witnessed so far, however, encouraged us not to forget because our neighbors still need us.
O
Now it is one year later. Most of us here on Staten Island not directly affected have gone on with our lives, having done any minor repairs needed, happy to have our power back, and our normal lives resumed. Yet unfortunately, and too easily forgotten, are the many who are still not in their own homes. The emotional and financial toll continues to beat down on these families despite it being one year after Sandy’s 6- to 11-feet of storm surge that engulfed their homes. Staten Island Parent began bringing readers information in December, when we looked at the fact that …“The holidays this year will be different for Staten Island families. Each person on Staten Island has felt the wrath of the storm named Sandy in varying degrees.” The most important thing we had to hold onto at that time was the hope that “together we will rebuild our Island, forgetting no one in the process.”
Faith, hope, and love do remain on Staten Island, and the greatest, and most important of these, is love! In March to conclude the series, I found myself struggling with writing about the progress to that point. I shared “how I would love to be able to write that the thousands on Staten Island who lost their homes are now able to find a new life, either in a fully restored home that had been destroyed, or settled in a new home from which to move on! Unfortunately, the facts do not support this. It makes me sad, especially since the storm named Sandy that caused so much havoc happened at the end of October. Now it is four months later, and so many people are still in limbo, unable to restart their lives.” I questioned, “Will this spring begin to bring forth new life?” and shared my belief that “I honestly believe it will, but not in the way that, or as quickly as, I had originally hoped.” This brings us to today, one year later, and while new life is at the embryotic stage for some, there is still so much more to do.
When asked to write this article, I contacted Habitat for Humanity to learn more of former President Carter coming to Staten Island, of the work that Habitat did on Staten Island from the very beginning, the subsequent work they continued to do all year, and what their plans are going forward on Staten Island. With the Carters returning to New York, which was the location of the very first Carter Work Project in 1984, the 30th Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Work Project this October 6-11 highlights by their presence the needs for housing still on Staten Island since Sandy reared its destructive face. An interview with CEO of Habitat for Humanity New York City Neil Hetherington gave me facts and so much more. I feel privileged to have experienced the hope Habitat is continuing to offer…but more than just hope…. I felt the commitment and heart, with hands-on assistance and caring, that they bring to Staten Island. Speaking to Neil, formerly the CEO of Habitat for Humanity Toronto, I discovered Habitat named him the CEO for New York on the day Sandy hit. While he knew that New York would be of a “different scope and scale” from Toronto with “building affordable housing in New York more difficult,” now came the added challenge of the aftermath of Sandy when he got here on February 11, 2013. “When I first arrived it was freezing,” Neil said,” but I went to bike around the island to get to know the city and the people. There is a resiliency on Staten Island that has such a draw to it.” He shared how Habitat is going about the rebuilding, trying to make it simple, having the resources, expertise, and drive to help but expressed concern about important issues he was grappling with. Repair in the flood zone raises the difficult question of repairing short term or fully, coupled with the frustration of which varying levels of raising the homes will be required.“Bureaucracy and indecisiveness is very frustrating… but steadfast determination and the American spirit will win out.” Habitat is stretching to 100 homes, with Neil finding it heartwarming to be able to provide hope to those 100 families. “Volunteers come in for no other reason but to provide hope where there’s despair.” “I look forward to serve on Staten Island,” he said. “We will rebuild to make sure we are helping our brothers and sisters … go where we’re needed to find a permanent solution… We are here for the long haul, and not leaving until done.” With Neil, this writer intends to “focus on Staten Island until the job is done.” As a Staten Islander who witnessed so much of the pain of loss of others on Staten Island, I can do nothing else. Are you with us? Join Habitat for Humanity today at www.habitatnyc.org. By Angie Mangino, a Staten Island writer who continues to remember our neighbors hurt by Sandy.

KIDS AND HALLOWEEN CANDY: A Recipe for Disaster
oes the thought of how your children may behave this Halloween send a chill up your spine? If you answered yes, you are not alone, because millions of other parents share this concern.
D
“If there is any holiday that parents have mixed feelings about, it is Halloween,” said Jane Hersey, national director of the nonprofit Feingold Association (www.feingold.org), a charity that helps children with learning and behavior problems. “Parents love to help their kids dress up in Halloween costumes, but many dread they will become little monsters after eating all of that additive-filled candy.”
ARTIFICALLY DYED CANDY CAN HAVE AN ADVERSE EFFECT ON A CHILD’S BEHAVIOR.
Sugar has often been portrayed as the villain behind the hyperactivity, temper tantrums and other bad behavior that many children display after eating Halloween candy, but recent studies have shown that the real culprits are petroleum-based food dyes, like Red 40 and Yellow 5, which are found in many of these candies. One such study is a 2011 Australian trial conducted at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, which was sponsored by the Feingold Association. This study of children ages 4 through 12 found that a diet eliminating synthetic food dyes and other additives, as well as certain foods, led to

significant improvements in behavioral problems like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional behavior. More evidence of synthetic food dyes’ harmful nature was provided in a major reevaluation of previous studies on diet and ADHD, which was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry. The authors of this 2013 meta-analysis concluded that a diet eliminating these dyes appeared to have “beneficial effects on ADHD symptoms.” According to a 2013 study on the food dye Blue 1, the negative effects of dyes in lollipops and other hard candies are exacerbated by the fact that these chemicals are not only

ingested normally, but are also absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the tongue. “We all used to laugh when children would stick out their brightly colored blue or yellow tongues after eating artificially dyed candies, but now we know that the effects of these chemicals on their behavior are not so funny,” said Hersey. In fact, Hersey and others believe that the increasing prevalence of synthetic food dyes and other additives in foods marketed to children has contributed to the dramatic rise in childhood hyperactivity in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently found that one in five high school age boys and 11 percent of children overall have been diagnosed with ADHD, which represents a 41 percent increase over the past decade. Recognition of synthetic food dyes’ harmful effects resulted in the British Food Standards Agency advising parents to consider eliminating these additives from their children’s diet. The European Union also issued rules requiring labels on foods containing these dyes to state that the colorings “may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children.” In the United States, a 2011 Food and Drug Administration advisory panel narrowly rejected requiring warning labels on artificially dyed foods, but the recent accumulation of research highlighting these dyes’ effects on children’s behavior might lead the FDA to reconsider this decision. Until the FDA takes such action, how can you protect your children from these ghoulish chemicals at Halloween? “Parents can plan for a healthier, more peaceful holiday by helping their kids avoid the worst of the candy and organizing activities

that take the emphasis off sweets,” said Hersey. She offers the following tips: Feed Kids Before Trick or Treating. Feed your children before they go out to collect their candy. A full stomach is good insurance against their snacking on sweets as they go from door to door. Choose Healthier Candy. Offer to trade healthier treats for the candies they collect. Parents can find a wide selection of natural candies and lowadditive brand-name foods in the Feingold Association’s Foodlist & Shopping Guide. Throw a pizza party. Plan a Halloween-themed pizza party for your children and their friends. Kids could wear their costumes to the party, which could be in your home or at their favorite pizza place. Camp out. Give Them Toys. Toys are a great alternative to candy. Check your local dollar store for Halloween-themed items like vampire teeth, squishy eyeballs, glow-in-the-dark insects and jumping spiders. “Halloween does not have to be a stressful time for parents,” said Hersey. “With some planning, your children won’t act like little goblins after they have taken off their Halloween costumes!” The nonprofit Feingold Association helps families use a low-additive diet developed by the late Dr. Benjamin Feingold, a pediatrician who was Chief of Allergy at San Francisco’s Kaiser Permanente Medical Center. www.feingold.org • 800-321-3287

Music Together has coined the phrase “diaper bag songs,” simple familiar tunes that parents can add their own lyrics to and easily pull out and sing at any moment to redirect babies and toddlers, easing transitions and keeping the little ones happy. Here are some ideas from Music Together on how parents can change familiar songs to help their children get through the day: 1. Help ease the stress of bath time. Try singing a bath time version of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” with “Wash, wash, wash your hair,” “Splash, splash, splash around,” “Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, glub, glub, glub, glub, glub.” 2. Help motivate your child to get dressed. Change the words to “Baa, Baa Black Sheep” to “Mary, Mary, where is your shoe? Here it is, and it’s going right on you” or “Joey, Joey, here is your shirt! Lift up your arms so you can wear your shirt!” 3. Help your family get out the door. Make up your own version of “Wheels on the Bus” about your car with “The walk to the car goes stomp, stomp, stomp…” and “The wheels on our car go ‘round and ‘round…” or “The buckle on the seat goes click, click, click…” 4. Help motivate your child to eat the foods you want him to eat. Try your own version of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” with “Yummy, yummy, little peas, I like to eat my yummy peas” or “Yum, yum, yum, yum, carrots and beans; yummy, yummy, yummy, yummy, carrots and beans.” 5. Help narrate your child’s day. Music can help you prepare your child for what is coming up or summarize what happened during the day. Try changing words to “She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain” to “We’ll be getting’ in the car later on…”, “First we’ll buy some groceries at the store…”, “Today we went to Shelly’s house to play…”, or “Then we did some swinging in the park…” Courtesy of www.musictogether.com.

COLLEGEBOUND
>>>
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A COLLEGE
hen choosing a college, students often look for the best academic institutions. While it's hard to argue with that approach, high school students facing the decision of where to spend the next four years of their lives should know that the right university is not necessarily the one with the best academic reputation.
W
A host of factors come into play when finding the right match between student and university. Academics should always carry the most weight, but students should consider a host of other factors before ultimately deciding where to continue their academic careers.
COST, DISTANCE FROM HOME, AND ENVIRONMENT ARE SOME ASPECTS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A COLLEGE. While cost should not dictate where high school students ultimately go to college, students should know that
Cost In a perfect world students would not have to worry about financing their college educations. But that's not a world in which today's students live, so the cost of a college education is something nearly every college-bound student must consider before making his or her decision. According to the College Board, the average overall cost to attend in-state public college for the 2012-13 academic year for students who did not receive financial aid was $22,261, a nearly 4 percent increase from the previous school year. That sticker price includes the cost of living in a dorm, food, books, and the additional expenses college students typically have. And the College Board notes that, despite the cost increase, financial aid budgets stayed the same as the year before, meaning even those students who received financial aid paid more money.

eventually student loans will have to be repaid with interest, so those who do not want to bury themselves in student loan debt after graduation would be wise to choose a university that's more affordable or one that's offering a more attractive scholarship and grant package. Unlike student loans, scholarships and grants do not have to be repaid.
Distance from Home While many high school students may think a school far away from their folks is ideal, the reality of being far away from home is a struggle for many college students who attend college outside of their home states. Homesickness is a very real thing for college students who are away from home and on their own for the first time.
In addition to homesickness, college-bound students should consider the cost of travel before enrolling in a college or university that's far from home. Mom and Dad might not be able to afford to fly their college students home several times per year for the holidays and other breaks in the school year, and the burden of financing that travel can fall on students. If you are not planning to work during the school year, then financing trips home may prove very difficult.

Environment Both the academic and social environments at a college or university merit consideration when students are deciding where to continue their education. Some students thrive in a competitive academic environment, while others tend to fare better in a more casual setting. Students should assess which environment is best for them and choose a university that best suits them as a student.

A college or university's social environment is another factor for students to consider. Larger schools tend to rely heavily on Greek life, while smaller schools may be more intimate and less exclusive. Students who hope to join a sorority or fraternity might benefit from a school with a thriving Greek life, while those who want a more intimate social environment might prefer a smaller school where all of the students seem to know one another.

PARENT & CHILD TIME By Ann Clinton
It was a crisp, cool night and the full moon lighted up the whole street as Philip and Liam rode their bikes around the circle near Liam’s street. “Liam, this is great,” Philip said. “What’s great?” Liam asked. BATS, WITCHES AND “Why, being able to ride your bike without worrying PUMPKINS about cars and trucks - traffic,” Philip answered. “I know there isn’t much traffic on our street but my mom and dad said that you still have to be careful and watch for cars,” Liam explained. “My mom and dad say the same thing and I can see why because my street is a busier street – more cars and they do drive fast,” Philip responded. Before either boy could continue the conversation, something flew by just up near the tree tops. “What was that? A flying saucer!” Philip exclaimed. Liam kept looking at the tree tops and then said, “Those are not flying saucers – those are bats.” “Are you sure?” “Yeah, it is that time of year. We saw bats flying last night when we came home from visiting Aunt Ann. There were lots of them,” Liam advised. “Maybe it’s time to go back to your house,” Philip suggested. “One bat, okay, but there are quite a few that I can see. I don’t want one to land on my head.” “Yeah, it’s a warm night and you really don’t need a bat on your head,” Liam laughed. A few minutes later, the boys were back at Liam’s house. Liam’s dad met them as they prepared to put the two bikes in the garage. “Back so soon?” he asked. “Dad, there’s an army of bats out there,” Liam replied. “Uncle Ciaran, Liam is almost not exaggerating. There were lots of bats flying at the tree tops. I thought one might land on my head,” Philip noted. “Well, let’s not let any bats into the house. Let’s hurry in,” Liam’s dad suggested. “Good idea, Dad. I don’t want one flying around my room.” “I wouldn’t want one in the house at all,” Philip added. As the two boys stepped into the house, they were greeted by their cousins Erica and Monica and their Aunt Ann. “When did you guys get here?” Liam wanted to know. “Well, we came to shop at the Mall and since we were near your house, my mom called your mom and we decided to visit. Your mom told my mom that Philip, Uncle Stephen, and Aunt Liz were visiting so we came to visit, too,” Monica explained. “What is this I hear about bats?” Erica asked as she was sorting out some stickers and Halloween cards for her class. Liam, who had been watching Erica sort through colorful papers with
Halloween ghosts, witches and goblins, said, “Those are really cute. The kids in your class will like them.” “Thanks, Liam. I thought so too. That’s why I bought them so we can celebrate Halloween. I’m also going to read them the ‘Paulie the Pumpkin’ story,” Erica said. “I think I remember that story,” Philip said, “But I don’t know it from memory.” “Do you know it from memory, Erica?” Philip asked. “I don’t. That’s why I have a copy here with all my stickers and stuff.” “Why don’t you read it to us,” Monica asked. “Okay,” Erica answered. “Here it is. Paulie the pumpkin is so fat and round He’s really most comfortable sitting on the ground. But he wants to send you a Halloween greeting So with the postal witch he is meeting. She is on her broom and ready to go. My gosh, she is thinking, he’s terribly slow. Paulie is moving as fast as he can. ’Gee, I wish I were the Gingerbread Man.’ She takes the greeting and with a wave is gone, Steering the broom deftly to stay out of harm. There isn’t much sky traffic so within a short time She delivers to you this Halloween rhyme: ‘I couldn’t be with you on Halloween day But I’m sending a greeting and just want to say: Happy Halloween to all and have a great day!’”

QUIZ
“Oh, I remember that poem, now,” Liam said. “Grandma read it to us. You got Paulie from Grandma right?” “That’s right, Liam. I did,” Erica answered. “Are you going to have a party in class or is all this – your stickers and stuff – part of a lesson?” Liam asked. “It is not for a party. I’m incorporating it into the lesson.” “Those kids are lucky,” Philip said. “Now that we are in 7th grade, we don’t do too much celebrating. It’s mostly studying,” Philip advised somewhat sadly. “Yeah, that’s true. But, at least since we’re older, we can ride our bikes at night and get scared by bats,” Liam laughed. Just then the front door opened and Ryan came in exclaiming, “Has anyone been outside to see all the bats flying around?” Erica, Philip, Liam and Monica just looked at each other and laughed. Monica said to Ryan, “Funny you should ask. We were just talking about bats.” 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Where were Philip and Liam riding their bikes? What flew over the tree tops? Who had colorful paper with ghosts, witches and goblins? Why did Erica have the Paulie the Pumpkin poem? What did Ryan say?”

GIGI’S WORLD by Giavanna and Gina Schrecker
Hi! My name’s Giavanna, but everyone calls me Gigi. There’s so much going on in my life that I want to share with you. That’s why, with the help of my mom Gina LaGuardia-Schrecker, VP of Content Development and Social Media for The CollegeBound Network, I am writing a monthly kid’s-eye view of what it is like in my world.
The Day Time Stopped For the first time since I was four months old, Mom and I missed a column. The Gigi's World installment was missing from the September issue because we suffered a big loss in our family. My Pop-Pop went to heaven on my 10th birthday, August 5th. His trip to heaven was a shock to our family (Mom described it as feeling like "time stopped"), but we are trying to focus on the fact that we know we'll see him again one day in heaven and that he is forever in our hearts. That was one of the things I said when I spoke at Pop-Pop's funeral, something I chose to do that everyone said was very, very brave. My mom couldn't even get up there at the time, but I have a spirit in me that is unique and special, she later explained. She also thanked me for being her voice when she had none, which I didn't really understand, but I'm sure I will when I'm older.
106www.siparent.com OCTOBER 2013
Before the funeral, I had prepared a few sentences about Pop-Pop, but when I got up in front of our family and friends, I was overcome with new words. I spoke about the fun times we always had and how very much we loved him. We will miss our special times with Pop-Pop -- especially doing "our things" like collecting seashells, fishing, riding on his lawn mower, tagging along to watch him at band practice (he played drums for his church), and going to cheap buffets. I wanted to share our conversation about how Pop-Pop would always tell me he couldn't wait to one day come for the "Senior Discount" at my restaurant when I become a famous chef, but I was over-come with tears toward the end. Mom said that I wouldn't have charged him for that meal, of course, but that such a conversation was
something I could cherish and smile about forever. I will miss our silly little chats a lot. When I think about my mom -- that she lost her father -- it makes me sad because I know how my sister and I would feel if our daddy ever went to heaven. That's what made me cry the hardest during those really tough first few weeks. I know Mom tried so hard to be brave in front of us, but she's an honest person -someone who pretty much feels "out loud." I think my sister and I were good for her, though… we kept her going on those days I could tell she was overcome with sadness and so very tired and drained. We are always well behaved, but we tried even harder to be good friends to her as well as good daughters during that time. Being good was a big thing with Pop-Pop, especially when it came to each other. In fact, I think one of the things that most impressed us during the many ceremonies for him was how everyone said he had the gift of becoming instant friends with anyone. I know we saw it… Pop-Pop was always on the phone with someone, checking in on them. And he would always, always tell us how much he loved us and enjoyed spending time with us. Although we didn't give it much thought when it was happening, now that he's gone, Mom reminds us of those many moments and we realize how lucky and blessed we were to have them and him in our lives. I was doubly blessed, I think, because about an hour before he went to heaven, my Pop-Pop had called to wish me a happy birthday and we talked about all good things -- how he couldn't wait to see us for our family trip to LBI the following week, how he was so proud of me, and how excited he was to hear I was having a fun day. Mom said that she doubts we will ever find anyone who was loved by more people than our Pop-Pop. The fact that he was our Pop-Pop makes me feel extra special, even though we're still very sad. So, in honor of him -- someone who was the life of the party and who always tried to make others happy -- I ask that you show all your love to others and never hold back. After all, you don't know what may happen tomorrow. That's how my Pop-Pop lived his life. I hope to do the same.
