Freedom writers -Their Story, their words-
Freedom Writers “Evil prevails when good people do nothing.
About the Story‌ Based on a true story, the film starts with Erin Gruwell in her first day of class at Wilson High in Long Beach, California. She discovered that she was a teacher of English class of Cambodians, Hispanics and blacks, many of they are already in gangs, and most of they hate between they. Gruwell finally makes a breakthrough when she intercepts a crude racist drawing being passed around the classroom. Upset, she compares it to the worst anti-Semitic caricatures of the Holocaust, and then discovers that her students don't know what about that event is. This leads Gruwell to a two-fold program that has the students writing in notebooks about their personal experiences,
And arranging a field trip to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, where they learn about the history of The Final Solution, and develop an interest in Anne Frank's diary. Quickly, the students make connections between Frank and their own ghetto lives. The hard-core Hispanic gang-banger babe, Eva, we will meet in the beginning of the story will turn out to be one of Gruwell's most significant success stories. She's meant to represent bureaucratic intransigence to the teacher's methods, but the part is so relentlessly negative--even when it's obvious Gruwell is making inroads--that it becomes annoying and unbelievable.
In 1998 they won the Spirit of Anne Frank Award- the Freedom Writers traveled to New York to accept the award. In the summer of 1999, the Freedom Writers and Erin visited Anne Frank's house in Amsterdam; the concentration camps Auschwitz, Birkenau, and Chelmno in Poland; and visited Zlata in Sarajevo, Bosnia.
The students began writing these entries as a simple English assignment, and had no idea that they'd once be published in a book.
The Freedom Writer's Foundation was formed by Gruwell and her students.
