April 2021
Greetings Members, Well, let’s hope winter is solidly in our rear-view mirror and spring is upon us. Well let’s hope winter is solidly in our rear-view mirror and spring is upon us. While we are all looking forward to spring, we had a diverse set of activities that members participated in and enjoyed this past winter. Members were busy with social and league paddle play, outdoor dining, firepits, bowling, zoom and in-person fitness classes, open gym and topped it all off with completion of our 2020-2021 Swim Team season.

The pool and Swim Team hold a special place in my heart. We joined The Club largely because I wanted a place to swim year-round and a swim team opportunity for our young daughter. Our daughter benefited tremendously from our beloved Mary Lynn and Wally as coaches and mentors. The 2020-2021 swim season was capably managed by Mary Lynn and Coach Matt Wendt. The entire team of Matt, Mary Lynn, Rex, Cooper, and Kathryn did a great job of keeping the kids safe, engaged, and learning. Communication was critical as The Club evolved with changes to the Restore Illinois plans and the coaches did an excellent job of keeping the families informed. Despite COVID-19, MSC served 46 kids, completed the entire season, with a brief COVID restricted break, ran two timed meets and multiple relay meets. On March 4, the season concluded with an end of year celebration of bowling and pizza. Please enjoy these pictures from the 2020-2021 swim season.

The pool has been a lifeline to so many families and fitness swimmers. Our Director of Aquatics, Lloy Johnston, has done a spectacular job leading our MSC community through the winter season and we are all so grateful for her leadership. Looking ahead to spring, members can look forward to more time dining outside with better weather, and more capacity inside dining as we evolve with the Restore Illinois orders. Right around the corner is Easter, Young at Heart, pickleball, spring paddle leagues and much more time to engage together as an MSC community. Look forward to seeing you around The Club, Be well,
Suzanne M. Eschel

Distinguished Clubs Award
We are pleased to announce! Michigan Shores Club General Manager, Tom Conroy, has been awarded The Distinguished Club Executive award by BoardRoom magazine, in partnership with Forbes Travel Guide.
Tom has earned the prestigious Distinguished Club Executive Award for his ability to lead the Michigan Shores Club team in providing an outstanding member experience. John Fornaro, Publisher and Co-Founder of BoardRoom magazine adds: “It was becoming clear that General Managers were a key reason The Club was able to earn and sustain Distinguished Club status year after year. So it was only natural for us to recognize and award those General Managers who were able to lead their respective teams in providing the highest levels of Member Experience.”
The Distinguished Club Executive award puts the spotlight on a GM/COO/CEO who has made significant contributions to their Club’s member experience. To be eligible for a Distinguished Club Executive Award, an executive’s club must achieve Distinguished Club status for multiple years. This award celebrates club executives who embody the intellect, integrity, leadership and accomplishments that define absolute excellence in the field of club management. The Distinguished Club Executive Award reflects an executive’s outstanding leadership and achievement in providing an exceptional member experience at their club, and it signifies a commitment to continued learning and improvement, to the benefit of club members.

History of MSC
Dueling Golf Clubs
The weather is warming and The Masters tournament is almost upon us. Now is a perfect time to recount some local golf club history. Did you know our Club once had a golf course along the lake? In 1898, our first clubhouse was built deep in the woods near 9th Street and Ashland Avenue. As well, lawn tennis courts, an archery range, and a croquet court were created. A long, narrow wood-planked sidewalk traversed the forest from the downtown area to The Club. The golf links, comprising six holes, were laid out at The Club’s founding. One year prior, our neighbors to the north at the Kenilworth Club had established their own nine-hole golf course, named Kenilworth Golf Club. As the Kenilworth Club had no formal meeting place, the tennis and ice skating shelter near Leister and Kenilworth Avenues became the golf club’s clubhouse. As mass-production of automobiles did not begin until a bit later, golfers had little competition from the roadways. Both course layouts played across Sheridan Road and along the lakefront. Famous early golf architect Herbert J. Tweedie was responsible for the design of both courses. Because of the similarities and locations of both golf links, the two are often confused. Some may ask why two golf courses existed in such close proximity, especially given the small populations of both villages. In fact, the two courses were just a mile apart. However, keep in mind that club life was quite provincial in those days. In the 1890’s, all of our Club members resided in Wilmette. It was no different at the Kenilworth Golf Club. Two distinct communities and one golf club for each!
4
www.michiganshores.org 847-251-4100
The two golf clubs coexisted until the early 1900’s. By about 1907, roadways were being constructed through the Kenilworth property containing the golf course. This necessitated a change. The golf links were finally abandoned in East Kenilworth. According to the Kenilworth Historical Society, the members of the Kenilworth Golf Club then leased the unincorporated property due west of the Kenilworth train station. Thus, in 1908, they formed the North Shore Golf Club with a new nine-hole layout in what is now west Kenilworth. Meanwhile, our Club had endured two clubhouse fires at 9th and Ashland. With insurance proceeds in hand, a new location was sought. In 1906, our Club purchased a single lakefront lot, and The Club moved from Mr. Wilson’s old property to our current location at Lake and Michigan Avenues. A new clubhouse building was constructed that same year. Unlike our friends in Kenilworth, golf continued on our course, despite the new clubhouse location. Club play continued until 1909. By that time, the land surrounding the golf course was beginning to be subdivided and traffic on Sheridan road was increasing. In mid-1909, our Club indicated its intention to discontinue use of the golf links.
Further confusing this matter of dueling golf clubs is the Kenilworth Assembly Hall Building. Designed by noted architect George W. Maher, the Assembly Hall was never a private club, itself. The Assembly Hall building was designed to be used by the Kenilworth community and various social groups. In turn, for many years the building was occupied and cared for by the Kenilworth Club for their own use and that of the wider community.
The Kenilworth Club, founded in 1891, continues on (without golf for over 100 years) to foster civic and social activities for the community. The North Shore Golf Club eventually left Kenilworth and purchased property in Glenview where it resides to this day as North Shore Country Club. Our golf course may have disappeared in 1909, but Michigan Shores Club endures, since 1898.

Fitness & Wellness
With spring on the way and winter hibernations ending, it is time to start getting back into our regular fitness routines. But before we spring right into action, let’s make sure we take the time to warm up to our new routines, and make sure we avoid any of those nagging injuries.
Begin by increasing your activity level now. If your fitness has been on the back-burner for awhile, start with some easy walks, bike rides, jogs, or circuit training with no equipment. This will help your body become re-accustomed to movement and will reawaken some of those big muscles that spend the winter months on vacation.
Don’t underestimate the value of a good warmup. Whether you have been somewhat sedentary or not, a good warmup is the key to a great workout (and injury prevention!). Start with some dynamic movements, like lunges, toe touches, or shoulder circles. The warmup should become gradually more intense to increase your heart rate just a bit and literally warm up the muscles by raising the body temperature. Spend about 5-10 minutes here and you can reduce the chances of incurring a major muscle injury due to the shock of a higher impact workout.
Set realistic goals. One of the biggest causes of injuries related to workouts is our own ego. It is completely okay to take a few steps back to reacclimate to exercise. Taking the time now to ease back in will prevent taking a much longer time to nurse an injury. The key is to gradually increase intensity as you become consistent with your routine. With patience and planning, you will be back to your fitness level in no time.
Listen to your body. No one knows you better than you! While some soreness and discomfort is to be expected when starting a new fitness routine, don’t be afraid to take a day or two off. Pushing through pain is a surefire way to cause a long-lasting injury. As a general rule, if you are sore for more than 72 hours after a workout, you may want to rethink your intensity.

MSC Foundation
The American Dream The Posse Foundation identifies students in 10 Metropolitan Areas who exhibit extraordinary leadership potential. The application and interview process takes 3 months and only 5% are successful. These individuals receive full tuition scholarships from partner Colleges and Universities. Of the 101 scholarships awarded in the Chicago area, our own Carla Flores received a full tuition scholarship to Cornell University. There are 10 current Posse Scholars at Cornell who will be mentors for her….hence Posse. The Michigan Shores Club Foundation has been providing $6,250/yr. towards Carla’s tuition at Loyola Academy. Her favorite courses are physics and math, but recently she took an economics course and found that to be the path she wants to pursue. Most of her recent courses have been A.P. Carla is on the Math Team and will be competing in Regionals soon with hopes of going to State. With a G.P.A. of 99.45%, she will be a strong team member (A.P. courses are weighted over 100%). She was a Loyola Scholar for 6 of her 7 semesters. Carla is the daughter of Uriel Flores. I would venture to say almost everyone knows his name and I’m pretty sure, after 40 years, Uriel knows almost all of the Members’ names. Carla’s two older brothers were MSC Foundation Scholars at Loyola. Juan is at Macalester in Chemistry and Erick is at the U. of I. in Industrial Engineering. Alex is a current Scholar at Loyola and Jaime is applying for next year. The MSC Foundation notched its 10th year last fall. We have had many success stories and we have recently started to offer $2,000/yr. toward private K-8 schooling. We believe that this will be an important time for students to build a strong base so that they may be able to attract funding from one of the top area private high schools. With our current cap of $25,000, a student going all 9 years will still have $7,000 of support left to supplement any aid they may get. We recently put together an up-to-date list of local and national foundations that support students in certain majors or support Hispanic students. The Board is looking for a new Director who would help in the application process. Please contact me or any other Director whom you may know. Our family goes back with Uriel to when our now 32 year-old son was in a high chair in the Oak Room. Our daughter once played a trick on him when he came over to clear the table and, with a worried look on his face, asked if she didn’t like the french fried shrimp. She laughed and showed him the empty batter shells. He thought that was very funny! Uriel, my friend, you and Mrs. Flores have a remarkable family. You have worked very hard and your children are well on their way to achieving the American Dream! The Foundation donors are very happy to have played a small role.

Are you set up to receive emailed statements, but not receiving them monthly? You might need to check with your email provider. Our system sends statements to 1,000+ email addresses at one time. Your email provider might see that statement emails are targeted to a mass number of people, and completely blocks the email from landing in your inbox, or even the spam folder. You might say “But I receive all other emails from MSC.” Marketing emails are sent to fewer people at a time, therefore they do not get blocked. We can confirm that an email leaves our system successfully, but it is difficult to confirm that the email was allowed in by your email provider.
