Fitness and Wellness

Welcome to the Fitness Center TechnoGym Skillmill Treadmill! You may have noticed the new treadmill in the Fitness Center. The TechnoGym Skillmill Treadmill has a wide range of options to take your training to the next level. It can be used in a variety of resistances to improve speed, agility, stamina, and agility. Check out the attached video, and try out some of the workouts below to see how this great piece of equipment can help you!

Free Walking and Running

Resisted Sprint

The curved belt of the Skillmill isn’t motorized like most treadmills. When running and walking outside, you are not only moving your body up and down, but forward through space. The Skillmill recreates that movement by requiring you to move the belt by adjusting your own speed while walking, jogging, or sprinting. When you accelerate or slow down, the belt changes speed with you, so that you are getting immediate feedback.

The heavy sled isn’t the only thing we can do from the pushing position - we can also run! The movements start out the same, but you can start to gain some speed with a little less resistance and really get those legs pumping!

Try this: Start by walking normally, then gradually increasing your speed until you are running at a comfortable pace. Then, slow back down to your walking speed. Once you’re comfortable changing speeds, try to sprint! (You can always grab the side handles for support)

Heavy Resisted Push For anyone with experience on the football practice field, you know what a great workout sled pushes can be. Crank the resistance lever to 10, grab the front handles, lean forward, and drive those legs! This is a remarkable exercise for leg strength and power, and you will certainly feel your heart pumping. Try this: Move the resistance lever to a point that you cannot run in the pushing position (this should be pretty difficult!). There are 10 resistance levels, start with level 8 and adjust as necessary. Try doing 3 attempts for 10-20 seconds each. When you finish, step off of the belt and onto the sides to rest. 8

www.michiganshores.org 847-251-4100

Try this: Lower the resistance 2 levels below your choice for the heavy push. Start in the same position and sprint forward. Remember to drive your knees forward and push all the way back through your feet. Try 3 attempts for 10-15 seconds. When you finish, step off of the belt and onto the sides to rest.

Lateral Bounds Most of the time, we don’t recommend trying to walk sideways on a treadmill. However, with the Skillmill, you are driving the belt rather than the belt driving you. We can use this to our advantage to train movement planes that may otherwise be difficult. Holding onto the side bar and using my feet to laterally drive the belt provides great exercise for the abductors and adductors, in addition to improving coordination and agility. Try this: Set the resistance lever somewhere in the middle (I suggest 5 or 6). Holding onto the side bar, start to shuffle side to side, gradually increasing your speed as comfortable. Try 3 attempts for 20-30 seconds on each side.

Resisted Backward Walking

Incline Walking

Backward walking has been shown to reduce stress on the knee joints while still being able to work the quadricep muscles intensely. Backward walking can also help with balance and coordination.

One of the most common cardio exercises in the gym. Incline walking is a great way to improve your cardiovascular health while maintaining a longer duration workout. With the Skillmill, you can set the resistance, lean slightly forward, and recreate that same incline walk while regulating your own speed as you desire.

Try this: Set the resistance to level 10, grab the front of the side bars with your back to the lake. Lean backward and try to walk by pushing your feet toward the back of the treadmill. Try 3 attempts for as long as you can manage.

Try this: Set the resistance in the middle (we suggest 5 or 6 to start) and do your incline walk as you would on a traditional treadmill. Try to maintain it for 30-40 minutes.

Aquatics

Take the Plunge! Rain or Shine, MSC Aquatics is open for summer workouts, lessons and fun.

Staff of the Month Laima Day, Aqua Fit Instructor Laima has been a part of our team for 6 years. She is a reliable substitute instructor who brings strong and dynamic classes every time she instructs. We chose to recognize Laima this month for the many times that she stepped up to help our instructors during May and June. Many of our members and instructors mentioned her excellent communication and encouragement. Her passion for teaching and sharing her love of fitness runs deep. She has a profound appreciation for helping others achieve their goals of well-being and good health. We are glad that she is a part of the team.

CPR First Aid Training Rex will teach participants how to perform CPR and other life saving skills. Participants will receive CPR and First Aid certifications upon course completion. This blended learning course includes an online portion and an instructor-led classroom skills session. The online portion must be completed before attending the in-class portion. In-person classroom skills sessions will be offered Friday, July 1 to Wednesday, July 6, and Friday, July 8 from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm.

Swim Lessons The Swim Instructors in the Aquatics Center have been excited to see that their schedules are filled with lessons for the summer months. The familiar faces of their MSC teachers, and the consistent air and water temps indoors ensure that learning can take place. Group lessons can be a great cost savings, ask your friends if they want to share in this great swimming opportunity.

Make Swimming Your Summer Workout: With just 30 minutes and a few useful tricks, a trip to the pool can become serious exercise. By Dana G Smith Several of our regular swimmers loved this recent article from the NY TImes, and thought the tips were useful from swimmers of all levels. We’re sharing the link here for all to enjoy! “Summer is here and you’ve decided this is the year to trade your running shoes for a pair of swim goggles. Maybe you’ve tweaked a knee and need a lower impact form of cardio, maybe you just can’t face your outdoor boot camp class when it’s 90 degrees. Whatever your reason for taking to the water, swimming is one of the best exercises you can do for your health. It’s a total body workout, taxing your arms and legs, as well as your cardiovascular system, yet it puts less stress on your joints than most other exercises. READ THE ARTICLE

Game Center

Our Supervised Games Center evenings have gotten off to a great start. Open from 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights Hundreds of kids have already dropped by with their signed waivers, played for a while, and ate dinner while their folks enjoyed a date night in the Aquatics Center, a visit to South End/Bellows, or some Patio time. As we look to the future, we request that families make reservations with reception or online via the Club calendar. Some nights have been very popular, which necessitates that we cap our hourly capacity at 15 children. Please note, last minute arrivals of large groups may not have access to the Game Center. We ask that an adult please accompany any child who is not potty trained. The Center is intended to provide a supervised fun retreat for kids aged 3-12 years old. While we would like to welcome kids of all ages, members who are 13 and older may be asked to leave if the ratio of younger to older kids gets off balance. Finally, for the safety of all members, please remind your children to walk as they move between venues in the Club. Our Game Center Staff looks forward to having fun with your kids.
