May 2022

It’s been an eventful first few weeks at Michigan Shores. First, I should begin with a huge thank you to the membership and staff who have been part of such a warm welcome. This past month marked my return to MSC after 8 years, and feels like a homecoming full of new opportunities, and long-time friendships. My experiences in the wine business serving Club accounts over the past several years has kept me “in the loop” of best-practices at many North Shore clubs. It’s exciting to bring that perspective back to MSC. We’ve gotten right to work, and I’m thrilled to see so many familiar faces, positive energy and progress in such a short time.

As always, May brings lots of excitement to the Club with many opportunities to take part in Club activities. Dining facilities are now open to pre-Covid hours, with the Bellows Room, South End Café, Oak Room (through May 21), Shawnee Pub and Patio (beginning May 27) open six days a week, with options for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. The Game Room has reopened with supervised play for children 3+ four nights each week. Come enjoy some grown up time at the Club knowing your little ones are well-cared for. This year, in addition to the ever-popular Mother-Daughter Tea and Mother’s Day Brunch we’re introducing a new Mother’s Day Wine Bundle which can be purchased through the Club - choose from specially selected wines, with sweet treats from Pastry Chef Jennifer. All are available for pick up by May 8. The annual MSC Foundation Derby Party is a can’t-miss opportunity to make a few friendly bets and support the important work the Foundation does to support our Club staff. A series of upcoming wine and cocktail events and dinners include Cinco de Mayo May 5, Oregon Wine Tasting Dinner May 20, and 3 Floyds Cocktail Night May 27. Geminis, don’t miss May Birthday Night, May 5! The Young at Heart Dinner is set for May 26, and we’ll celebrate our youth at the Graduation Buffet May 29. Ring in the summer season outside with the Memorial Day BBQ May 30. Please note, on Tuesday May 31 the Club will be closed. The Speaker Series brings a new NYT best-selling author on May 3, Lloy’s MSC Book Club includes a Breathing Workshop May 11. We continue to build community with the all-in MSC Tri-Challenge, the Member-Guest tournaments, and ongoing paddleand late-May pickle ball! Finally, stay tuned for updates on renovation plans for the new pavilion deck, which will be a vast improvement on the current structure, maintaining the integrity of the main clubhouse architecture and improving the outdoor dining experience. We’re thrilled to be working with the Village to have this project come to fulfillment in time for summer 2023. More soon! See you at the Club, John Hallberg General Manager

Aquatics

Congratulations, to all of the Mad Marathon Challengers in April. 61 members and 21 staff entered the 26-day Challenge. It was great fun to witness folks attempt new goals like the completion of their first mile swimming in the pool or walking with a weighted vest. I also enjoyed learning from others who researched the mileage for their ski trips, dog walks, and Aqua Fit classes. Join us for our Triathlon Challenge in May.

2022 MSC Golf Society

We had a great start to the MSC Golf Society season with our 6th Annual Masters Viewing Party in the Bellows. Once again this year, the food was tremendous. Thank you so much to Chef Ed and Irene! After the delightful food and Stella Artois were exhausted, spirited competition ensued during our annual chipping contest. Luckily, the super thick artificial turf-pad prevented any permanent damage to the floor and no windows were broken. Tony Lazaro prevailed by demonstrating precision wedge play with close competition from Ben Rodman and George Pearce. Well done, gentlemen. Special thanks to our 9-hole league captain, Al Golembeski. We had a fabulous season in 2021. Over half the Golf Society participated in last year's weekly league play. Again, many thanks to Al for his tireless dedication to the Thursday night grudge-matches.

Fitness and Wellness

May is for…Recovery Whether it is strength training, high-intensity training, or spin class, we often place great emphasis on our workouts. But just as equally – or maybe even more important is recovery for our body. There are many great ways to jumpstart our recovery, but the most important thing is something we never seem to get enough of: sleep. Sleeping, drinking enough water, and eating quality nutrient-dense foods are the best ways for our bodies to recover, build strength and avoid injury. Some other things to help with recovery are walking, stretching, massage, and meditation. The MSC Fitness and Wellness team has some great options to help get you started!

Start Your Recovery Massage With Frederick Weinstein Book a massage with our amazing massage therapist Frederick! Sessions are available in 30, 60, or 90-minutes. Call the Fitness Center front desk at 224-408-8299 to schedule an appointment.

Yoga With Lloy Johnson Join Lloy for a yoga class focusing on breathing, balancing, and stretching. Classes are scheduled on Mondays on Zoom at 8:00 am and Thursdays in the Group Fitness Studio at 8:00 am.

Stretch With Rodrigo Velarde Joints feeling stiff? Muscles feeling tight? Do you need to improve your range of motion but you keep putting it off? Book a 30-minute manual stretching session with personal trainer Rodrigo Velarde. Rodrigo utilizes techniques from Shiatsu and Thai massage. You can expect to feel relaxed and see increases in your flexibility. For more information or to book an appointment, contact Rodrigo at rvelarde@michiganshores.org.

Replenish Nutrients With a Green Machine Smoothie Post workout replenishment is critical to recovery. Instead of sugar-filled recovery drinks, stick to clean protein and greens. The South End Café Green Machine smoothies, with spinach, banana, peanut butter, and almond milk is a perfect – and delicious – post work out recovery drink
