Board Members

Hello Members,

Fall is in the air, and we’re officially in full transition to the cooler months ahead.

The patio heaters are out, the fires are being lit on chilly days, paddle courts are abuzz, swim team is preparing for upcoming meets, and fall events are filling up. We’re looking forward to an exciting holiday season ahead! I encourage you to check out the Club calendar online and the weekly emails to stay in the know on all the goings on in the coming months.

Our monthly Wednesday Luncheon Club (10/5) and Young at Heart Dinner (10/20) events are live for our members 55+. Families of all ages are welcome to join in the fun at the annual Pumpkin Patch (10/8), complete with kettle corn, pumpkins, hot cider, apples, face painting and more, or the Kids Halloween Dance Party and Haunted House. Adults, enjoy a night out at our new Hoedown event, with live music, games and fall southern-style dinner buffet. Young at Heart dinner is back (10/20) and we’ll feature wine events with Napa’s Mirror Winery dinner (10/13) and Tuscan wine tasting with Cabrea Il Borgo (10/27).

Our restaurants are also in transition to Fall. The elegant Oak Room reopens this week, and Fall menus have been introduced in the Bellows Room and South End Cafe. Chef Ed will continue to feature seasonal favorites as weekly specials in all venues. The South End Cafe with its healthy breakfast, and lunch menus, smoothies, and special Sunday brunch continues to grow in popular ity. As the weather changes, we will wind down service to the Patio, and prepare for the construc tion of a new and improved outdoor dining Pavilion, opening next spring.

Thanks to all who joined us for the All-Member Meeting. We’re looking forward to the new Pavilion, new branding and website/app project, and sharing good news about the current state of the Club. As always, we welcome your feedback and continue to focus on making improvements and maintaining member satisfaction.

See you at the Club!

All-Member

All Member Meeting: Presentation Excerpts from Board President Suzanne Eschel

Recently, I have heard from our membership a mix of excitement, energy, anticipation and relief and a sense that “ We are Back” in full operation with no mitigations.

2022 Club Overview Highlights

• We are back to pre-pandemic participation at Easter (1,000+ guests and Mother’s Day 700+) and other diverse activities hosted for members of all ages: speakers, cooking classes, wine education, family nights, Young at Heart, book club, game room, summer camp.

• The Pool has never been more utilized by members of all ages. Lloy has done an amazing job with the program.

• Pickle and Paddle remain enormously popular with a segment about 1/3 of our membership enjoying league or social play.

• The MSC Foundation Derby Party had a record turnout to support their important mission of financial and mentoring support for our staff and their families. The Foundation Board members said: “We need a bigger room!"

Membership

Membership interest is strong, with legacy, junior, and regular members applying each month. We currently have an approximate ~20 month waitlist.

Our Staff

Over the past two years our staff did an excellent job working creatively, adapting club operations with changing mitigations while navigating with their own families and with great service during some tough times and labor shortages.

In May, we recognized 9 (!) staff members with 25+ years of service.

Branding

We have spent considerable time in the past several months, informed by the member survey, to review our brand and identity/logo. With the support of outside professionals, our own Marketing Committee, and with review and support of our Past Presidents Council we are pleased to share our direction with you. See the next page for more detailed information.

Michigan Shores Dining Pavilion

Clubhouse Investments

The Club has made just over $1M in investments be tween 2020 leading up to the pandemic shutdown and through 2022. All these infrastructure and renovations have been done without any special assessment and some of the lowest dues on the Northshore:

• The new South End Café.

• Our paddle infrastructure was invested in with lights, decking and court re-surfacing.

• The East Porch has new modern windows that blend beautifully with the architecture of the building and a huge efficiency improvement over the old windows.

• Fitness Center has 16 new spin bikes.

• Upgraded Bowling to a brand new digital scoring system.

• We continue to honor our history by digitizing and archiving our historical documents and artifacts.

Outdoor Dining Pavilion

The Club management team and Board are listening to membership. Of primary importance in the survey was dining and outdoor dining. We are working on a plan to replace the current elevated deck off the Patio with a new Pavilion in the same footprint. Imagine a beautiful permanent structure in harmony with the historically significant architecture and stonework of our building, a beautiful amenity for the Club and an asset to the community and lakefront.

We have partnered with our long-standing architect Peter Witmer, consulted with the village of Wilmette and cooperated with neighbors. We explored op tions with consideration of the size and height of the pavilion, the impact of impervious surfaces, water, noise and lighting, to our maple tree, etc. This pavilion will have integrated lighting, sound system, modern overhead heaters to complement the standing heaters, a modern bar, and a stone fireplace. The Village zoning board, architectural review board and the Village Board of Trustees have approved our plans and plans have been submitted. The work will happen over the fall and winter so no disruption to this year or next year’s summer outdoor dining season.

New

Branding & Identity

The Marketing Committee, under the leadership of Board member Eileen Noren, and with the input of members, staff, and industry professionals recently took on the task of reviewing and revamping the Michigan Shores Club branding and identity in a systematic three-step process.

Poised to begin a project to revamp our website, create an integrated app, and develop improved branded content, collaterals and merchandise, we knew a brand audit and alignment of MSC mission/values and visual identity would lay a strong foundation for our work.

A foundation from which to grow… our brand blueprint

Nestled into an historic Wilmette neighborhood, overlooking Lake Michigan from an elegant and histori cally significant setting, the Club maintains a sense of accessibility and community, where member rela tionships run deep. Michigan Shores Club creates for its membership an essential “third-place” at the heart of the community. Our vision to be a social centerpiece that elevates the day-to-day experiences of our members and their families is at the heart of what we do, from our daily workouts, casual meals and meetups to the annual family and Club celebrations we share together. Michigan Shores gracefully adapts to the demands of the modern-day without sacrificing traditions that make us an essential family club.

Our Three Step Process

Internal Branding

We began by asking questions like, Who are we, who do we want to be, what do we value, what values do we share, what makes us unique? This process created a brand blueprint from which we could create a visual vocabulary.

External Branding

Based on that blueprint, and an ob jective assessment of our existing logo and its present applications, we undertook a design process that resulted in brand visuals that honor our history and traditions while reflecting our current values.

Member Experience

Finally, we developed a strategy that ensures that our new branding and identity translates to enriching the member experience.

Background graphic from the original woodwork in the lobby.

Identity www.michiganshores.org || 847-251-410014

Fonts, colors and graphics that reflect our history, architecture and environment

From our palette, including verdant greens, limestone of our facade, and the blues of lake and sky, to art-deco influenced fonts and architectural details from our building.

An historically significant building to inspire…

Our building, designed by the Burnham brothers, opened in 1929 as the Shawnee Country Club. Honoring aspects of that original logo, we drew on the Art Deco influence of the time, including other prominent social clubs and rele vant architecture of the period. Our final concepts present an updated formal simplicity rooted in our own history.

MSC Dolphins Swim Team Logo, app graphic, and wearable Club merchandise

We owe a debt of gratitude

To the members who participated in the Club survey, to member and marketing guru Mathew Singer, branding agency Seedhouse and board member/graphic designer extraordinaire Eileen Noreen for their uncompromising dedication to the successful completion of this process.

A look ahead

The new logo and design elements will roll out over the coming months, with new items being designed and printed as needed. New MSC gear reflecting our new logo will be available for purchase beginning November 17 at the Shop-a-Palooza event at the Club.
