Hello Members, Summer is in full swing with a welcome sense of normalcy. It has been wonderful to see the membership so enthusiastically using all The Club’s facilities – the Patio is hopping, paddle and pickle is a sensation, The MSC Summer Sports Camp is starting, golf league is in full swing, and diverse events are back on the calendar. The July 3rd Annual Club Picnic was a phenomenal example of the vibrancy of The Club. Looking ahead to the rest of summer, please check the website and the weekly emails for upcoming events! Movies on the Front Lawn, A Little Night Music on Fridays and Saturdays, wine events and of course Dog Days on the Lawn all keep the Patio busy!

Make your reservation now for the first ever Michigan Shores Club Garden Walk on Sunday, August 29! Tour three beautiful local gardens and end at The Club for a lovely Sunday afternoon garden party! It is sure to be a new Club classic. Now is the time to think ahead to booking events at The Club both small and large. Luncheons, business meetings, showers, weddings, anniversaries, and celebrations of all varieties. For medium to larger events consider the Canterbury Room, Ballroom, Dining Room and East Porch which have all been renovated or upgraded in recent years. For more intimate gatherings, consider the Michigan Room or 1898 Room on the south end of The Club as perfect backdrops for your event. All these spaces are amazing venues for any size event. Fitness & Wellness

Massage: More Than a Luxury Why should I get a massage? Please contact the Fitness Center front desk at 224-408-8299 or Tony Colosimo at acolosimo@michiganshores.org to book a session with MSC Massage Therapist, Frederick Weinstein! I’m so happy you are asking yourself that right now. Human touch is the most basic form of connection, and massage is one of the oldest healing traditions, utilized by ancient civilizations such as the Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese, and Eastern Indians, who were convinced of the therapeutic properties which managed to treat a variety of ailments. Self-care is the best way to cultivate our ability to care for others. Quite simply, when we are relaxed, we are at our best. Deep relaxation creates a space in which we can breathe into our authentic selves, tapping into our most connected state of being where we are at ease in our ability to be present. By reconnecting with ourselves, we are able to more easily connect with others and access the clarity necessary to make the best choices for our well-being — creating an opportunity to integrate our mind, body, spirit, and emotions. On a physical level, massage enhances exercise performance by accelerating recovery time between workouts. Massage reduces inflammation and soreness in the joints and soft tissue, flushing out toxins such as post-workout lactic acid into the lymph system where the body can eliminate it so that the muscles can receive the oxygen and blood cells necessary to optimize recovery. Massage can also reduce healing time after any injury or strain by improving circulation, joint range-of-motion, and flexibility. Besides alleviating muscle tightness and aches and pains, massage has been shown to reduce stress, decrease heart rate, and lower blood pressure, therefore improving immune function.

11

www.michiganshores.org 847-251-4100

As if that isn’t enough, studies have shown that additional benefits of massage increases the function of the parasympathetic nervous system, creating a calming effect, which helps to reduce anxiety, digestive disorders, Fibromyalgia, headaches, nerve pain, fatigue, and insomnia. Therapeutic massage can also reduce pain from osteo/rheumatoid arthritis and post-operative joint replacement, while improving cardiovascular health and balance. Not only does massage have compounded long-term benefits, but it also offers the immediate feeling of deep relaxation and calm, producing neurotransmitter brain chemicals which release endorphins that basically make us feel good. Massage reduces stress hormones, such as cortisol, norepinephrine, and adrenalin, helping optimize immune function, stimulate the lymphatic system, and heighten mental alertness. All this is to say that the benefits of creating space in our lives to receive therapeutic massage will not only improve our own well-being, but will also contribute to improving our relationships, community, and world. The best part of receiving a massage is that it immediately feels good, does good, and is good. We all deserve to allow ourselves time to be present, at ease, and cared for. And for those of us who invest ourselves into mindful physical activity with the goal of maintaining and improving the quality and longevity of our lives, there is no doubt that recovery is equally as important as physical activity. Massage is not a luxury, but rather a therapeutic experience that is complementary and supportive of our overall well-being. Quite simply, massage is a wonderful act of self-love which cultivates our ability to be present in life for those who mean the most to us.

MSC Kids Summer Reading Club The Summer Reading Club is going strong with over 50 participants! Combined, they have exceeded their 100 book summer goal and as a result, we have changed our goal to 400 books by summer's end. With only one month to go, they are turning those pages and cruising to their goal. Keep up the great work!

Golf Society The Golf Society enjoyed their first outing of the season at The Glen Club in July 21. Successful golf outing at the Glen Club was won by the team of Brian Schinderle and Jim Mather who shot a sizzling 10 under 62 in two man best ball format. Two way tie for 2nd at 65 was the teams of Dennis McBride & Marty Kenny and Dave Melsheimer & Adam Goldman. Steady play from Ed Hungler & Dan Foreman and Harry Eschel and Ben Foreman rounded out the top of the leaderboard at net 65. Long drive winner Matt Cirenza (taking the reins from George Pearce who had to finally give up his title from his previous mammoth blast) Closest to the pin Adam Goldman Prizes were sterling cut glassware with the MSC logo on them. Stemless wine glasses and the “wee drams'' whiskey tasting glasses were very well received by the winners. The course, food, weather & camaraderie were off the charts. Details to come on our next outing in the fall. A reminder that the 9-hole Thursday night league still has availability and is a fun way to meet fellow golf members and is a great deal at $42.50 for golf & cart. If you are interested in joining the MSC Golf Society, reach out to Cody at cczmyr@michiganshores.org. 12
