December
Hello Members, The magic of the holiday season is upon us! First, a belated Thanksgiving to all members. I hope you all enjoyed time with family and friends at home, away or at Michigan Shores Club. I know I was very happy to host my daughter and a bevy of my siblings, nieces, and nephew at home. It is a time certainly to be thankful and grateful for our families, friends, our local community, members, and our dedicated staff.

Our holiday season calendar of traditional family festivities and events are all underway! Check the website, the holiday brochure, or our twice weekly emails to make your plans and register online or simply call the front desk. Nick or Ciera will be happy to help you! You can choose from your annual favorite events or even try something new including several luncheons, teas, wine dinners, Holiday or Christmas Eve brunch and New Year’s Eve dinner. Don’t miss the convenience of Holiday Gift Wrapping on December 14, 15 and 16 from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. Consider enjoying lunch in the South End Café or just sitting by one of the fireplaces with a coffee or a splash of wine to relax (or to finish your “to do lists”) while you wait for the elves to wrap your gifts. We also have Vince Theodore coming to MSC from Bloomingdales at Old Orchard to fill you in on all of the best gifts for 2022. Your presents will be the talk of the holiday season! A tremendous thank you to all members who generously donated to the annual Employee Holiday Fund. I am proud of the tradition of generosity to annually acknowledge our dedicated staff. It is a beautiful and heartfelt tradition that our hard-working staff appreciate. The national hospitality industry labor shortage that you likely have read about in the national news plus seeing it firsthand in North Shore restaurants has also impacted us at Michigan Shores Club. The Management Team is keenly aware and constantly recruiting and depending on availability filling in with temporary workers. The shortages have impacted all local Clubs and are real. Thank you for your patience and support of our management team and staff! Thank you for your commitment to Michigan Shores Club. I wish you good health and wellbeing during the magic of the holidays. Dear Members, As you know, Michigan Shores Club is a vibrant Club with a healthy membership and robust activities available year-round.
As we look to the future of MSC and its continued reputation as a premiere Club on the North Shore, the Board of Directors would like to announce that effective January 1, 2022 the initiation fee for admissions will be increasing to $15,000. This decision was made after market research was concluded and recommendations approved by the Board of Directors. It is in line with the sustained growth of MSC and will set The Club up for continued success for future generations. We would like to encourage you to tell those friends and family members who are considering membership to apply before the end of the year as all applications received prior to January 1 will be grandfathered at the current rate of $12,500. As such, the non-refundable deposit for membership applications will be 50% of the fee, $7,500. Please be sure that this information is passed to your candidates as well. We are extremely excited for the growth and direction Michigan Shores Club is headed. It's through your support and the support of the North Shore community that have put MSC on the map as being one of the leading Clubs in Illinois. For questions about the membership process or to refer candidates, you are encouraged to contact the MSC Director of Membership, Cody Czmyr, at cczmyr@michiganshores.org or 224-408-8305.
MSC History
Hubert and Junior A truly great story captures the imagination of the reader. It can bring you closer to the truth or to an altogether different place. Private clubs are not immune from such great stories. Tales of a club’s past can fascinate and amuse. They can illuminate or explain. However, with certain liberties, truth can easily morph into legend. One such story involves the design and construction of our current clubhouse. It is well known around the Club that our building was designed by Daniel Burnham. Most anyone who follows Chicago architecture knows the name Daniel Burnham. What an honor that our building was created by the world-famous city planner of Chicago, agreed? Daniel Hudson Burnham was the director of public works for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair (“The White City”) and the creator of the 1909 “Plan of Chicago”. He also designed the original Chicago Union Station, The Rookery Building, The Monadnock Building, Marshall Field & Company Building, and even the Kenilworth Train Station Building. His accomplishments are well known, the world over. Some years ago, very old drawings were discovered in our building. What was found is of truly historic value. Apparently, the architect had utilized hand drawn sketches to outline each element of construction design. From windows and doors to chimneys and roofs, each feature was captured in its own drawing. It is unique, indeed, to discover such material much less have it preserved for nearly 100 years. Thanks in large part to the efforts of our chief maintenance engineer, Tranqui Cortes, a large scroll of original drawings have survived to the present day.

What is most interesting is that these architectural works carry a well-known signatory that we would expect: D.H. Burnham. As well, they carry a signature from Hubert Burnham. Who is this Hubert? Well, Hubert Burnham was the son of Daniel Burnham. Possibly Hubert worked alongside his father in the creation of our architectural renderings? This is where our story turns. Daniel Hudson Burnham was born in 1846 and lived most of his life in Chicago and Evanston. He opened his first architectural office in 1873. In fact, D.H. Burnham & Co eventually became the world’s largest architectural firm. Unfortunately, Daniel Hudson Burnham died in Heidelberg, Germany in 1912. This leaves us with a 16 year time gap between Burnham’s death and the construction of the Michigan Shores Club building. A conundrum, at best. In turn, the story had been circulated around the Club that Daniel Hudson Burnham had produced our plans before his death. According to this lore, Burnham’s sons had used these pre-1912 plans to design our building. The plot now thickens. Was it possible that Burnham, Sr. had created plans for a stand-alone club building only to be completed years later by his sons? I suppose it is possible. During Burnham, Sr.’s life, both his sons, Daniel H. Burnham, Jr and Hubert Burnham, worked alongside their father. After his death, they founded Burnham Brothers Architects. Could they have used their father’s drawings for our Club?
MSC History
Sadly, for those who maintain that Burnham, Sr. was indeed the architect of the Michigan Shores Club building will be disappointed. Some of the sketches found are dated June, 1928 and signed by D.H. Burnham, Jr. and Hubert Burnham. They are also signed by two other colleagues of Burnham Brothers Architects from the 1920’s. Clearly, these were not the designs of the father. Furthermore, both Daniel, Jr. and Hubert Burnham were members of our club. They matriculated from the Century Club of Evanston in 1927 and were chosen by the board of the Ouilmette Country Club to design the clubhouse we know today. All is well documented in Club records.
Should the membership bemoan a building created by the younger Burnham’s? I think not. Burnham Brothers Architects designed many well-known and significant buildings in the Chicago area. The Central Life Building, State of Illinois Building (1924), Seneca Hotel, Chicago Banker’s Building, Engineering Building, Randolph Wells Building, and the Carbide and Carbon Building were all designed by the sons of Burnham. As well, our own club building was featured in the prestigious journal The Western Architect, in 1929. The sons were very well respected throughout the nation as some of the finest designers of their day. So, fear not Michigan Shores. Your building is a Burnham, just not the one you thought. David H. The holiday season is upon us and that means lots and lots of food… and sweets! Aquatics
Aquatics Center Frequently Asked Questions As we enter our busy season, learn more about MSC Aquatics Center.
When can I come in to swim with my family?
What is the difference between Open Swim and Family Swim?
At this time (until February) the Aquatics Center hosts kids team practices right after school; Mondays 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm (Water Polo - openings still available) and Tuesday-Thursday 3:45 pm - 6:00 pm (Dolphins Swim Team). So Mondays, you can come by at 5:00 pm, Tuesday - Thursday at 6:00 pm and Fridays anytime after school (lots of families come to play Friday after school). The pool is an excellent way to pass the time on the weekends.
Nothing really, just one less lane is available for lap swimming if capacity requires that lifeguards make that change.
Evenings between 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm we request that people make reservations (especially Fridays) in case we have reserved the pool for a rental. It is not as common during the week and we are open and available even if you don’t have a reservation. Making a reservation just helps you from showing up when someone else has rented out the pool. You can call (224) 408-8297 for a reservation or you can use our reservation system app, Pike13, and add yourself.
When is the quietest time to swim in the pool? 2:00 pm - 3:45 pm, and 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm during the week. On the weekends it is 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm.
What is the best kept secret of the Aquatics Center? We have a Sauna that often goes unused. Both the Hot Tub and Sauna are complimentary for all members whenever the Aquatics Center is open.

Fitness and Wellness
Did you know that working out in the cold weather has some great benefits (besides making snow angels)? As the weather gets colder and the days become shorter, our activity levels generally decline. These factors combine to create some negative effects on our health and bodies. We can become lethargic, lose motivation, and get exposed to less sunlight naturally. Thankfully, there are some great ways that getting outside for a workout or two can help. Consider these benefits: • Finding time during the day to expose yourself to some sunlight has great effects on our mood and motivation, not to mention the extra Vitamin D intake! • Getting outside and exposing yourself to the cold can have positive effects on your immune system. CDC studies have shown that winter workouts can help to prevent simple infections and sickness. • Shivering (while not the most enjoyable activity) is a method our body uses to produce heat. Studies have shown that people can expend up to 5 times as many calories shivering as they do resting. • Did you know that not all fat in the body is the same? Brown fat in the body gets “turned on” when we are cold and burns calories stored in our body to create heat, regardless of the type of exercise you choose. • Our bodies are better at regulating our temperature in the cold. This means you can often exercise farther or longer (potentially burning even more calories), according to AHA. Be mindful though, don’t stay out too long or when it is too cold and risk frostbite.

Of course, even with all of these benefits, make sure to listen to your body and take care in extreme weather. Start your workout with layers, and adjust down as you warm up. Staff Interview
Recently, we sat down with Director of Athletics, Tony Colosimo, to learn a little more about him. Tony’s passion for fitness is evident everyday he works with members. Get to know a little more about him with our interview below! MSC | Tell us about yourself.
MSC | Tell us about your time at MSC.
TC | I grew up in Westland, Michigan, a city
TC | I joined the team at MSC in November
about halfway between Detroit and Ann Arbor. I played football, baseball, and wrestling growing up and seemed to always be training for one of those. When I finished high school, I had no intention of ever working out again! I was certain I wanted to be a lawyer... or a teacher... or study classical architecture. I ended up working in the healthcare field for about seven years before finally rediscovering the fitness industry. Around 2014 I had a close friend that insisted on dragging me to the gym with him. After a few months, I realized how much I enjoyed working out. This led to tons of research, reading, and practicing for my own fitness. Ultimately I decided to launch myself into the world of personal training, which has allowed me to have a fulfilling career researching, teaching, and studying not to mention helping people to realize their own potential and improve their health at the same time.
2019. I got about three full months under my belt before, well... the world changed. I had the great privilege to inherit a fantastic team of group fitness instructors, personal trainers, aquatics team, and front desk staff. Over the last two years I have met some truly remarkable people. I have had so many private training clients that have made amazing success, and I have been able to flex some creativity with programming, outdoor fitness classes, and so much more. It is truly a pleasure to see so many members dedicated to their fitness regimen everyday and to have become a part of this wonderful community.
Outside of work, I enjoy beach volleyball (as an amateur), sports analytics (also amateur), and continuing to train myself (ask me about the saying for trainers who are their "own trainer"). I like sitcoms and suspenseful TV series and can discuss, in detail, just about any episode of Parks and Recreation.

MSC | What are your top 3 vacation destinations (and why)?
TC | My top vacation destination is Bonita Springs, Florida. If you've been, you know that it isn't the most prestigious place, nor does it have the greatest attractions, but it was the first vacation I took with my beautiful girlfriend Jameela. We happened to find this city by accident, and had an unexpectedly great time. We were able to sit on a beach, right in front of the ocean and watch the sun set in front of us. We found the best ice cream we've ever had (Sweet Melissa's, in case you find yourself in Bonita Springs). My other top destinations are places I haven't seen yet. I would love to visit Japan in the spring to see the apple blossoms, and I want to visit Greece and spend as much time there as possible.
MSC | If a movie were made about your life, who would you want to play you and why?
TC | If a movie were made about my life I would want to be played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Hear me out - we are both bald... and the similarities end there. But everything he does is more dramatic and more intense. I'm sure he could pull it off.
MSC | Do you have a favorite quote? TC | My favorite quote currently is a bit specific, and might be silly. It is in reference to training with heavy weights, and how to be thoughtful and careful when doing so:
“Whether the pitcher hits the stone, or the stone hits the pitcher, it is bad for the pitcher.” MSC | If you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see?
TC | If I could witness a historical event, I would want to watch games at the Coliseum in Rome. While not a specific event, I once studied the Latin language and was actually able to study in Rome for a few weeks. There are so many amazing pieces of history in the Coliseum and it was in use in a fascinating time in Italy's history. I have read so many stories in both English and Latin, so being able to witness the actual events would be incredible to me
MSC | If you were stuck on an island what three things would you bring?
TC | I would bring a kettlebell, an axe, and Jameela (since people are technically "things" and you weren't specific!). Jameela is my partner and would be great company to be stuck on an island with. An axe has great utility as a tool or hunting weapon. And a kettlebell is the ultimate single-piece-of-equipment workout tool.
