February 2021
Greetings Members, Happy New Year and I hope you all had a safe and enjoyable holiday season! Not being able to celebrate the holidays with my extended family was certainly disappointing. Like many families we made the best of it with Zoom. The Holiday Baking Kits, Gingerbread Houses to-go, cinnamon buns and our continually changing menu for carryout options certainly helped during the holiday season. A bright spot for my family, we hosted my ten year old twin niece and nephew with my brother on the Patio on one sunny and very cold December day. We enjoyed loads of hot cocoa, treats from our in-house Pastry Chef, Jennifer, blankets, heaters and a lot of laughter. It was a delightful afternoon. Thank you to our dedicated Management Team and staff to keep our food and beverage operation humming.

It’s February and it’s Chicago, so here we are fully in the heart of the winter season. While many indoor activities are still not available quite yet, you can certainly find many diverse activities inside and outside at your Michigan Shores Club. I certainly would never ever have thought I would welcome so many weekend nights enjoying dinner on the Deck in 30-degree (if we were lucky) temperatures with such enthusiasm. My family was not alone. Many members embraced a new normal and the Deck has been at full capacity most weekends. Don’t forget to make a reservation! Wonderful to see fellow members enjoying some sense of normalcy, connection and community. As of this writing, there have been a few updates to the Restore Illinois Mitigation Plan. Please check the MSC website for updates on our operations. Finally, Members, I am very frequently stopping by The Club solely to just “check in” with the Management Team and our wonderful dedicated staff. Gratitude is a twoway street. Members have expressed much gratitude towards staff and the staff is equally grateful for the generosity and commitment from our membership. Thank you for your commitment to Michigan Shores Club. I wish you good health and wellbeing.

2020 was a year to remember with an unprecedented global pandemic, social unrest, and a presidential election. I am reflecting on lessons learned from my personal experiences as I optimistically look ahead to a new year. 2020 reinforced for me the importance of Flexibility.
I balance my reflection considering how to prepare for what is best for my personal well-being, my family, as well as for my professional life impacting staff and members in 2021.
When the pandemic first started it was an extremely scary, confusing and uncertain time for all of us. I had to continually evolve my preparedness for myself, my family, my staff and our members. My staff and I were up for the challenge. I am proud of how we came together and did exactly what we needed to in order to keep staff and members safe and to continue our operations. We did the hard work for preparation, sanitization, prioritization and organization. My staff had to be flexible, agile, adaptable and take on multiple roles. 2020 reinforced for me the importance of Safety and Wellbeing. Thanks to the swift decision making and professional expertise of our General Management and Board of Directors, we instituted immediate steps to ensure the health and safety of our entire staff and members; daily basic self-health check, temperature checks, a daily health log, mask mandates at the clubhouse, and bi-weekly COVID-19 tests. At the same time, like all families, we’ve all adjusted whether that meant at home care of family members, e-learning, working from home, etc. 2020 reinforced for me the importance of Perseverance. Mentally it’s been a challenging time for all of us. Our days can be long and monotonous, they can also be extremely stressful and emotional as many of our dedicated staff were impacted because of Restore Illinois policies that impacted our operations. This required our team to work hard and very differently by needing to be creative and innovative with offers for the membership. I am so proud of the entire staff and it’s a true testament to our perseverance and dedication to each other and The Club. It’s a little harder to see the smiles behind the masks, but I can feel energy. I try my very best to make the environment positive because we all care for one another. My goal is to try and help make my family, staff and our members feel as much of a sense of normalcy as I can, despite how difficult days might be at times.

2020 reinforced for me the importance of Teamwork.
I am Looking ahead to 2021 with Optimism.
2020 was a year of inspiration for me. Each one of us has strengths and weaknesses, but collectively, we are a team. We are blessed with the accountable work horses who never stop, the creative geniuses constantly surprising with ingenuity and measured under the most stressful of circumstances. There is nothing that we would not do for this membership; whether we make a special soup, or a unique request for a favorite entrée that was removed from the menu months ago, or deliver a carry out order to a member’s house, or make a call to a member because their grandson has a severe food allergy to assure them that it will be taken care of personally. We look after the members like they are a part of this family and that is something so incredibly rare.
We are focused on preparing to re-open at some capacity indoors in the near future. I look forward to developing new menus with new trends for our members' experiences. I’m excited to use REAL china again (I know that sounds funny, but it’s true). I look forward to bringing back valued team members. I can’t wait to work parties, weddings, social events, wine dinners - all things I’ve really missed due to social distancing. I want to take a moment to thank our incredible members and staff - we couldn’t have done this without you. I am so incredibly proud of this group. We made it through 2020, with flexibility, empathy, perseverance, teamwork and now optimism going into 2021. I am committed to continuing to work hard for each of you. We are all in this together.

It has been a year unlike any other, but we are very much looking forward to the year ahead. 2020 proved to be a very challenging year, but with the support of our members, we are persevering. While the end is still a ways away, this year has proved how loyal and supporting the MSC membership is. We have so much to be proud of and thankful for accomplishing over the past year. We were able to renew our status as a Distinguished Club, we adapted quickly to the many changes and curveballs thrown at us this year, MSC has maintained a healthy and vibrant membership, the management team has been able to update several areas of The Club - including the completion of the new (and highly anticipated) South End Cafe, and provided creative and interactive virtual programming, to name a few. As we look ahead to 2021, we look forward to enjoying it with each and every one of you. We will continue to keep you updated on new mitigations from the Restore Illinois plan, prepare delicious meals and curbside options and provide fun and creative programming virtually (and in person when the time comes). It's not just the staff that has worked hard to ensure that Michigan Shores Club remains a staple on the North Shore. The membership has stepped up in a big way this year and we truly appreciate each and every effort you have made. It’s through you that we are able to continue to build on the legacy of MSC within the community.
