February 2022

Lots of activity happening this February! Despite the cold and loads of snow, The Club continues to be a welcome respite from winter with many great events planned in February with much more to come in March. Wrapping up January, the ever popular Family BINGO Night was a big draw with families. Both nights sold out and there were many kids (and adults) who left as happy winners! Additionally, The Club launched a new concept, Fridays by the Fire, which drew an energetic crowd of members to listen to live music, share hors d’oeuvres, and sip cocktails. I encourage you to check out the February 25 and March 25 dates.

The Bowling Alley and Aquatics Center continue to be big attractions to fight the cold. Specifically, on bowling, The Club made a significant investment to improve our very aged scoring system and upgrade our computerized scoring system recently. We are now back in business and digital scoring has been welcomed back. In Food & Beverage news, our newest dining venue, the South End Cafe is open for breakfast Tuesday through Sunday, lunch and dinner Thursday through Saturday. Please check out The Club calendar for the That’s Amore Valentine’s Day dinner dance on Saturday, February 12, Bring Your Own Wine Night in the Oak Room on Thursday, February 18 and the next Fridays by the Fire on Friday, February 25. Additional details on all of these events are within this month’s Shorelines. Lastly, look forward to the publication of our full membership survey results. The Board is very excited to share the recent survey of our full membership. You will soon receive the results in a dedicated email and the results will be posted on the Club’s website. We were grateful to have such amazing participation from our membership - Thank you all for participating. There was a high level of satisfaction and also many thoughtful suggestions on how we can continue to improve Michigan Shores Club, both near term and longer term. We are planning our next set of strategic capital projects and the survey was very helpful to inform our path forward. Stay warm and we hope to see you around The Club soon. Suzanne M. February Staff of the Month Arlo Johnston | Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR/AED, and WSI certification February is Arlo’s one year anniversary at MSC, and he has been chosen as our Staff of the Month. Arlo is a high school junior at Northside College Prep in Chicago. He is a runner, a wrestler, an artist, and climber. If he is not here or at school, you can find him running with his friends or climbing with his dad. We chose to recognize Arlo this month because of his curiosity and eagerness to get his job right, his willingness to fix things when they break, and his earnest engagement with his coworkers and our members. We feel fortunate for all that Arlo brings to our MSC Aquatics team and program.

Now, when you’ve reached your desired distance you can receive either a sticker or patch commemorating the distance covered in our pool. We love helping swimmers meet their goals and acknowledge their commitment to their wellness. Interested? Contact Lloy, ljohnston@michiganshores.org, for more information. The Aquatics Center is also pleased to recognize 2 Patch Club members for their commitment and tremendous mileage in our Aquatics Center.

Since the program began in 2018 Pam Rezek has completed

803 miles!

Congratulations! We appreciate you.

Locker Rentals Available It's a new year! Rent a locker in the Aquatics Locker Room. Locker Rentals ($80/annually) provide easy access to the pool whenever you feel the urge to swim - no more accidentally leaving your goggles, suit, or cap at home. With our updated bathrooms, whirlpool, and sauna, a locker helps you feel like MSC is a relaxing retreat, just a visit away. Maybe with a locker, the pool deck will become your new hangout, instead of your kitchen counter. Invite your friends to meet you at the MSC Whirlpool (while the kids play in the pool). Annual Locker Rentals are non-refundable.

Fitness and Wellness

We’ve all seen the Workout Warriors. Breathing hard, soaked in sweat, hands on their knees. Did they have a good workout? Maybe. Let’s dive into what it means to have a “good” workout and how you can build one for yourself.

What is a “good” workout? This is tricky. A good workout is going to differ greatly from one person to the next. A good workout should meet a few criteria: • It should have a plan • It should have a purpose • It should provide balance in the form of movement patterns (more on this later) • It should challenge your body

How do I come up with my plan and purpose? An important thing to remember is that everyone has different needs (not necessarily goals, those are different). Figuring out your own needs can be difficult. The first key is to have something assessable to track. Strength (in the form of weight moved), range of motion, pain, and work capacity are a few examples. Once you’ve identified your needs, the next step is to identify your goals. Goals are different from needs. Goals are things we want to achieve while needs are things we, well, need to achieve. Weight loss, fat loss, muscle gain, and dropping a pant size are examples of goals. Goals are typically something measurable. Once you have your needs and goals identified, the next step is to make a plan. Every workout should have a purpose. The plan is determined by the purpose. For example, let’s say my goal is to move more weight in the deadlift. The purpose of my workout would be to increase my strength in the hamstrings, glutes, and supportive muscles that are used in the deadlift. The workout plan must then include sets and repetitions with exercises that will improve my strength. Having these things aligned is the key to creating a “good” workout.

Fitness and Wellness

Um, movement patterns?

Tying it all together

Balance. Movement patterns give our bodies balance, health, strength, and wellness. Having proper balance with regard to movement patterns will prevent injuries and movement compensations.

So we have our needs, we have our goals, we understand our movement patterns, and we have prepared a warmup. What now? It's time to plan.

There are nearly infinite ways that the body can move, but almost all movements will fall under one of the following seven categories: 1. Vertical Push (eg, shoulder press) 2. Vertical Pull (eg, pull up) 3. Horizontal Push (eg, push up)

A well-balanced workout will include a push, pull, hinge, squat, and core movement. You can choose whether your pushes and pulls are horizontal or vertical. Just make sure that you alternate to the other option during your next workout. Here is a sample of a balanced workout:

4. Horizontal Pull (eg, bent over row)

Perform 4 rounds of the following circuit. Rest 1-2 minutes after each circuit.

5. Hinge (eg, deadlift)

Bodyweight Squat | 10-15 repetitions

6. Knee-Dominant (eg, squat)

Pull up | 5-10 repetitions

7. Core (eg, plank) The Core category is special. There are three subsets - force transfer, force resistance, and carrying.

Glute Bridge | 10-15 repetitions Push up | 5-10 repetitions Plank | 30 seconds

Warming up Do it. Take five to ten minutes and do some dynamic stretching, foam rolling, practice repetitions, or something that will get your heart rate up just a bit. Warm ups are important. They tell our body that it is time to move and prepare our body for the stress of the workout.

Recipe Roundup

Love is in the air! We are happy to share one of our favorite Valentine’s Day recipes, Heart of the Batter. Cozy up with your special someone and give these delicious treats a try, in the name of love!

Detox Smoothie Level - Easy | Total - 1 hr Prep - 30 min | Cook - 30 min Yield - 6 jumbo cupcakes Ingredients For the cupcakes: • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 3/4 cup granulated sugar • 2 large eggs, at room temperature • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 cup strawberry-flavored milk, at room temperature • 6 strawberries, hulled For the frosting and topping: • 2 cups confectioners' sugar • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 stick unsalted butter, at room temperature • 1/2 cup heavy cream • 3 strawberries, hulled and halved lengthwise

Method 1. Make the cupcakes: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a 6-cup jumbo muffin pan with paper liners. Whisk the flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. 2. Beat the butter and granulated sugar in a large bowl with a mixer on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then beat in the vanilla. Reduce the mixer speed to low; beat in the flour mixture in 3 batches, alternating with the strawberry milk, beginning and ending with flour, until just combined. 3. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared muffin cups. Bake until a toothpick comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes in the pan, then remove to a rack to cool completely. 4. Using a paring knife, cut a cone-shaped piece of cake out of the top of each cupcake (about the same size as the strawberries), stopping about 1/2 inch from the bottom. Stuff with the strawberries, then cover with a small piece of the removed cake. 5. Make the frosting: Sift the confectioners' sugar and cocoa powder into a medium bowl. Transfer half of the sugar-cocoa mixture to a large bowl; add the butter and 1/4 cup cream and beat with a mixer on medium-high speed until smooth. Add the remaining sugar-cocoa mixture and 1/4 cup cream and beat until fluffy. Transfer to a pastry bag fitted with a star tip and pipe onto the cupcakes. Top each with a strawberry half.

Staff Interview 16

Recently, we sat down with Director of Catering, Irene Aceves, to learn a little more about her. Irene is a true hospitality professional with years of private club experience having worked in many of the area clubs. Get to know a little more about her with our interview below! MSC | Tell us about yourself.

MSC | Tell us about your time at MSC.

IA | I was born and raised in Chicago and

IA | I started at Michigan Shores Club in 1998

will probably never leave. I was raised by my grandmother who was Czechoslovakian and an English Teacher; we lived on the Northside of Chicago near Wrigleyville. (Yes, I am a Cubs fan!) I am an identical twin and we are very close. You may see my twin, Sara, on the Patio as the host during the season. We are the youngest of the girl siblings; my mom had 8 children; 4 boys and 4 girls. We are a close family and have raised our kids to be the same; you are never alone with family. My husband and I live in Rogers Parks with my 2 girls. I love to read, listen to podcasts, go to concerts and go dancing. I went to college to be an English teacher, so I never thought I would end up where I am today. Yet, I started out in hospitality at the age 14 at Ridgemoor Country Club (near Chicago in Norridge) and I loved it. I was a bus girl and the more I learned the more I enjoyed it. Servicing members and helping them with their events is a true joy. When you walk away after a long day & night and members are happy, it is truly soo sweet and the reminder of why I do what I do.

as a Banquet Server and continued to work my way throughout the whole Club. I left in 2013 as the Director of Catering and headed over to Exmoor Country Club (love this Club) and later to Bryn Mawr Country Club. In 2018, I came back home here to MSC as the Director of Catering. I plan all the private parties and Club events which we have a lot of. During COVID, I was happy to be able to stay on and began running the Patio/Dining Rooms. Being on the Patio/Bellows, it allowed me to meet and have contact with members even more as not all members plan events with me. I really enjoyed rebuilding our service team and I am proud of this staff. This staff works evenings, weekends and holidays and keeps striving to deliver service excellence; although we stumble, we continue to strive for more.

MSC | What are your top 3 vacation

MSC | Do you have a favorite quote?

destinations (and why)?

IA | I am not sure I have a favorite quote,

IA | New Orleans! My husband and I go every year (well before COVID) with friends right around Mardi Gras and have such a great time. The food and service is amazing there! It has such a relaxed vibe and I love it there. They have amazing char grilled oysters and don’t knock it till you try - so good. I also love to go to this wine patio,Bacchanal Fine Wine & Spirits. You pick out your cheese & meats; they’ll create a charcuterie board, then buy some wine and head out to their patio to listen to live music, drink & eat. And you can't miss going on a ghost tour! I am excited to go this February. Nashville is the next one! Nashville has some great music history. We love to go to the museums and walk around. Stop in the bars to hear some amazing music. My husband loves Johnny Cash, Elvis style music and so do I. The bands that you find in those bars are great, and it is not all country music. Although, I do love country music too. England! I went with my dad when I was in high school. I am a huge Jane Austin fan, so we went to see her home and I was super excited. There is so much history and so many places to tour. It’s like you are stepping on history and it is pretty amazing. I would like to take my girls there as we love to visit museums, do tours, walk around and London definitely has all of that.

MSC | If a movie were made about your life, who would you want to play you and why?

IA | I can’t picture anyone wanting to make a movie about my life. I am also not a big movie goer, and I am struggling to think of an actor. I would love it instead if a musician were to write songs about my life. I can see some Nirvana and Tim McGraw style music. Definitely not the same genre, but I would love anything they’d perform!

but I do have a favorite poem by Shakespeare, Sonnet 116: Let me not to the marriage of true minds. I like the whole romance thing; it’s the Virgo in me.

MSC | If you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see?

IA | Wow there’s too many! Maybe The Gettysburg Address, Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington, the fandom of the Beatles or perhaps seeing the times of Jane Austin. I would love to see if she had a true love with all her great works on romance; she must have?!

MSC | If you were stuck on an island what three things would you bring?

IA | I would really hate that! I hate the sand and the beach. I do not know how to swim. Anyways, not sure if this counts as one item, but I would bring my family and by family I mean my immediate family; then parents, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. You know so we could all at least hang out, play some Pictionary and argue; only family knows how to do that the BEST. Then some kind of water filter gadget; so we would have clean water always available to drink. Last… not sure, perhaps endless capability to listen to music, podcasts and books. I love to dance although I am not good at it, so music would be great. Podcasts are always great to listen to and there are many different kinds. Audio books as I love to listen to mysteries like the classic Agatha Christie and I am also loving Louise Penny Chief Inspector Gamache books.
