January 2022

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a safe and enjoyable holiday season with family and friends. The Club really dazzled and sparkled over the holidays with a full schedule of member favorite and traditional holiday events. The Candlelight Wine Dinners, Family Tea, Christmas Eve Brunch and New Year’s Eve dinner were well attended and enjoyed by our membership. Again, I want to showcase and thank our dedicated Management Team and staff for making the holidays a wonderful experience. Michigan Shores, other local clubs and restaurants are continuing to manage through industry staff shortages – so please share your thanks to the MSC team while at The Club.

Survey results are in! Also in January, we will be publishing the results from our recent full membership survey. We had incredible participation, significantly over industry averages of 58% of members completing the survey. The overall club satisfaction was excellent at 90%! We look forward to sharing not just the results but also the capital projects under consideration and other updates or new programs and amenities resulting from the survey. Our beautiful Club continues to see high demand from prospective members. We have a very healthy pipeline of prospective members and a waiting list. Finally, I would like to end on a theme of gratitude. Members have expressed much gratitude towards staff and the staff is equally grateful for the generosity and commitment from our membership.Thank you for your commitment to Michigan Shores Club. 5 Keys To Make Fitness a Lifestyle Motivation can be an amazing fuel! It can get you waking up at 5:30 am in order to get to the gym by 6:00 am four times a week. However, motivation wanes. It’s short lived. It’s great when it’s used to kindle your fire, but kindling doesn’t last long. What was once a very promising start, can quickly become a once a week activity or peter out entirely. You know exercising is good for your health, longevity, and you should probably be getting more of it. So, what can you do to make those lifestyle changes stick? By Rodrigo Velarde

1. Find What You Like

2. Schedule It

Statistically speaking, few people actually enjoy exercising. You must find what physical activity you actually enjoy and have other physical activities revolve around that. Maybe you enjoy salsa dancing, boxing, swimming, wall climbing, or really anything that gets you moving. You can view strength and mobility training as a way to aid or maintain your abilities in that field. When your main focus is on something you truly enjoy, you won’t need much motivation to get it in at least a few days of that activity each week.

Even when you find something you enjoy doing, life can still get in the way. You can’t treat it with an “I’ll get to it later” mentality. You probably don’t cancel work meetings at the last minute because it would be unprofessional and disrespectful to the other attendees, treat your workouts the same way. Respect your future health and body. Schedule it and make it non-negotiable.

www.michiganshores.org 847-251-4100

Fitness and Wellness

3. Have A Buddy It’s easier to cancel a solo activity than it is a partner or group activity. Letting others down can be a great deterrent to cancelling your fitness plans. This works much better when your “workout buddy” is also dependable and you can keep each other accountable. If you don’t currently have a friend or family member to be accountable to, you can always make friends at the location you attend, or pay for an instructor to be accountable to.

4. No Pause Button How often do people say “I have to get back on track”? Vacation or holidays hit and their physical activities take a backseat and get rescheduled indefinitely. This is one of the biggest pitfalls many gym-goers fall into. Instead of going all or nothing, it’s much better to reduce your total hours each week during these times than completely cancel it all. Get rid of the pause button and use the slow-motion button instead.

5. Don’t Focus On The Peak One of my personal favorite activities is mountain hiking. Every step, every effort directly contributes to reaching the top. However, it is very easy to get discouraged if all you focus on is how far away the peak of the mountain is. It never really seems to get closer since each step is relatively very small. But if you focus on the progress you have made from the base, you can look back at the great amount of work you have already accomplished and stay driven to continue. One of the hardest parts of a lifestyle of fitness is that you can’t really see the finish line, because it can morph. If you get too caught up with “how much farther” you have to go, you will get discouraged. If you focus on how much each training session keeps building on itself, you will have longer lasting fuel to help keep your fire lit.

The Next Meeting Lab Girl by Hope Jahren Thursday, January 13 | 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm If you are interested in more details, please contact Lloy at Ljohnston@michiganshores.org or register online! Looking ahead, we will meet in both February and March to discuss Caste by Isabel Wilkerson. We also intend to read The Nightwatchman, and Light Between Oceans in 2022. We would love to have you join us. If you are looking for a way to connect with fellow members or perhaps you share an interest in reading, then we encourage you to join the MSC Book Club. The group meets for only one hour every month and dates are predetermined so you can add them to your calendar in advance. Discussions are led each month by the member who selected the book of that month. Lloy Johnston helps facilitate the meetings ensuring they are organized and kept on topic.

The Michigan Shores Club Foundation Shop-A-Palooza Success The annual Shop-A-Palooza was a great success attracting 30 artisans and vendors and over 400 shoppers. Vendors offered a wide array of jewelry, clothing, skincare, handcrafted items, organic foodstuffs, and Chicago neighborhood-themed items. The large variety attracted many members and guests looking for one-of-a-kind treasures and holiday gifts. Light refreshments were served, and a cash bar was available.

The money raised will go directly to funding scholarships and educational opportunities for Michigan Shores Club employees and their families. These opportunities have included private high schools, colleges, and post graduate programs as well as vocational schools, language schools, and citizenship training schools. In its 11 years as a not-for-profit organization, the Foundation has funded $400,000 in scholarships for over 50 Michigan Shores Club Scholars. Employee Anniversaries

Michigan Shores Club is truly a wonderful place to work. The location, the Clubhouse and the membership all contribute to what makes MSC so special for its employees. And while many of the faces and people you have come to know have become a part of your routine while using The Club, time can quickly slip away and you forget how long someone has been with The Club. We’d like to acknowledge those employees who celebrated a milestone anniversary at MSC in 2021.

Vaccine Mandate

Dear Members, In accordance with the new CCDPH vaccine mandate, all members and guests over the age of 5 will be required to provide proof of vaccination. Effective January 3, 2022, the Cook County Department of Public Health has issued a mandate that all indoor settings where food or drinks are served for on-premises consumption, like restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues, private and country clubs, and fitness facilities will now require proof of vaccination for customers or members.

The new mandate will apply to all members and guests 5 years of age or older who visit MSC. Members and guests must provide proof of vaccination upon entrance to each department of The Club. MSC will not keep record of your proof of vaccination and as such you will be required to provide proof each time you visit each area of The Club.

Per the CCDPH order, proof of vaccination means • A CDC COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card

OR • An official immunization record from the jurisdiction, state, or country where the vaccine was administered

OR • An ‘app’ that provides a digital record of vaccinations

OR • A digital or physical photo of such a card or record that includes the individual’s name, the vaccine brand administered, and the date the vaccination was administered

Individuals who have received a medical exemption are exempted from the vaccination requirement provided they provide MSC with proof of the medical exemption and a negative COVID-19 test administered by a medical professional within the prior 24 hours. Michigan Shores Club will continue to implement the current mask mandate as set by the CCPDH. Please ensure that your guests are aware of, and are prepared to comply with, this CCPDH mandate.

We thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation with our staff as we all work together through this new mandate.

Staff Interview 16

Recently, we sat down with Director of Aquatics, Lloy Johnston, to learn a little more about her. Lloy’s passion for fitness is evident everyday she works with members. Get to know a little more about her with our interview below! MSC | Tell us about yourself.

MSC | Tell us about your time at MSC.

LJ | I was born in Buffalo, NY but grew up in

LJ | I started at MSC in the fall of 2013 as the

West Hartford, CT (with my folks and 2 sisters). Here’s me by the numbers: I’m coming up on my 4th year as the Director of Aquatics at MSC. But, aside from that, I’ve been a Personal Trainer for 20 years, Thai Massage Therapist for 15 years, yoga Instructor for 12 years, a mother of 3 for almost 14 years, and in May, a wife for 24 years. But, if I wasn’t all those things for the past 24 years? I would also have liked to have been a backup singer on tour with Prince, or to have actually followed through on my college career path to be a Health Educator in a health center or the public school system. Back in the day I was a manager at a health center before my husband and I moved to Ecuador in 1999 for his PhD research. It was then and there, while training in TaeKwonDo, that I realized I wanted to be a personal trainer.

Sunday evening yoga instructor when the Fitness and Wellness Center first opened on the 3rd floor. For years a group of us enjoyed the sky of the sun setting on Lake Michigan as we practiced yoga together. I fell in love with the MSC pool during morning swims with Kevin, one of my personal training clients. It was at that time that I first met our committed early morning swimmers.

www.michiganshores.org 847-251-4100

I knew then what a special community MSC Aquatics has and I am thrilled to now be an active facilitator in that community. As the Aquatics Director, I have felt so fortunate to be the witness of the commitment members show for their fitness and allegiance to their workout pals and swim instructors. And, I am truly grateful to work with such a great Athletics/Aquatics Team.

MSC | What are your top 3 vacation

MSC | Do you have a favorite quote?

destinations (and why)?

LJ | I read this quote in Pema Chodron's book,

LJ | Back in the summer of 1995 I was the Assistant Waterfront Director of a Girl Scout Camp in Florence, Oregon. Indira, an exchange camp counselor from Zagreb, Croatia, and I shared a tent and we have been friends ever since. I want to visit Indira in Croatia where she rides her bike alone or with her family everywhere she goes. Her photos of those adventures sometimes make me cry with joy. I would also like to hike the Pacific Coast Trail with my husband and my kids, either sections or the whole thing, because the Coast and the Redwoods make you feel so small and nature feels so great. I would also like to canoe the Boundary Waters and Quetico with my husband and my kids, because my husband spent a summer in college at a research station there - he talks about it more often than I care to admit.

MSC | If a movie were made about your life, who would you want to play you and why?

LJ | Julia Roberts. She and I share a similar smile and laughter. I think only she could pull them off and not make everyone roll their eyes or plug their ears. And, we share the same birthday (though she is a wee bit older than me) so we must just have a similar vibe.

Start Where You Are, and wrote it down to keep next to my desk where I collect myself. I read it to myself most days and it helps to remind me to not make "much ado about nothing" which I seem to have great skill at ...

“Have you ever been caught in the heavy-duty scenario of feeling defeated and hurt, and then somehow, for no particular reason, you just drop it? It just goes, and you wonder why you made “much ado about nothing.” MSC | If you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see?

LJ | One day, I would like to be present at an Olympic or Paralympic event where I can witness athletes make history as they dedicate their bodies to their craft and give all that they’ve got in one beautiful moment. But preferably, as a team, witnessing teams work together with their whole hearts is something truly special to behold. It's like the perfect choral performance where multiple bodies are unified for a singular sound. Those are the moments that I would want to witness, people coming together with a shared voice or goal and making things better together.

MSC | If you were stuck on an island what three things would you bring?

LJ | Am I alone on this island? Mostly, I'd want my people with me. But, things? A good machete, a nice pillow, and some salt and vinegar potato chips for after sunset when I am feeling snacky.
