March 2021
Greetings Members, I know it is March, however, this was written in February. I woke up this morning to 16 inches of snow after several snowfalls already this month. I thought, good thing we decided to send notice to the membership last night that The Club will be closed until noon. It will take that much time and more to clean up the mess. In the meantime I need to focus on shoveling through my courtyard to get the pups out to do their morning business. That depth of snow is far over their heads. Then the morning ritual of tracking them down to put on their jackets, one does not mind the jacket because he is always cold, the other hates it and wants to bury her face in the snow and stay out in it. I can’t wait for spring!

As you are aware, we have taken several steps to safely open up indoor dining which is currently at 40% occupancy or 50 people max per room. We have gone further by ordering an air filtering system for both the Bellows Room and the South End Café. This system eliminates bacteria and viruses (including COVID-19) in the air and is 99.8 % effective. This is in addition to the UV ray lights installed in our HVAC systems last year. Moreover, we have been testing all staff regularly. Beginning the first of March we have contracted an outside company to administer COVID-19 tests to all our staff every two weeks. This is the nasal swab test with 99.9% accuracy. Over these past eleven months we have had very few employees test positive for COVID-19 and for those that have we have taken swift action to protect other staff and members alike. None of those testing positive have been front line staff in the food and beverage operation, and none were contracted while working at MSC but from outside The Club. All this should bring some level of comfort. Whatever your comfort level is be assured we are here to help - whether you prefer outdoor dining only, indoor dining or to-go only. We can presently accommodate indoor gatherings of 50 people max. If you are interested in planning a gathering please contact Irene Aceves for booking and planning Iaceves@michiganshores.org. The staff and I will continue to reinvent ways of making club events happen, be it smaller or more controlled, we will make it happen. I am very proud of the MSC team in place. They have been responsive, creative and positive throughout the past year even though they have personally taken on challenges at home as well. Lastly, I wanted to acknowledge our Assistant General Manager, Eddie Cruz’s recent successful completion of BMI (Business Management Institute). This is a University based program through the Club Managers Association of America and is Eddie's second BMI, bringing him closer to receiving his CCM designation (Certified Club Manager). Congratulations Eddie! In addition, for those of you who do not know Eddie is a level one sommelier and working on moving to Master Sommelier. Tom Conroy CCM, CCE General Manager

Soft, elegant, approachable, subtle, and easy to drink. Most of us have had some kind of Merlot during our experience drinking wine. Needless to say, Merlot is having a difficult time breaking through the current wine market which is still dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s making a comeback thanks to its history and importance in the blending part of Bordeaux varietals. It’s body structure, unmistakable finesse, gentle tannins, and luscious finish makes Merlot a great varietal to enjoy anytime of the year. Our Wine of the Month is 2016 Merryvale Merlot from Napa Valley. Soft and elegant aromas of chocolate, blackberries, a bit peppery, cassis, and hints of strawberries. All emerge into a symphony of luscious and soft textures showing it’s finesse and gentle tannins. Our Food Suggestion Filet Mignon with Bordelaise Sauce. experience the tradition of excellence

Fitness
Whether you hibernated for the winter, or simply spent your exercise time shoveling snow, spring is the perfect time to get back into our fitness routine. As the plants start to bloom and the days get longer, here are some great tips for reigniting our exercise routines!
Get out and walk! If you’ve been trapped inside (due to weather or otherwise) getting out for a walk in the sun can work wonders for our mental state. Not to mention, we can expose ourselves to that great Vitamin D which has been linked to many great benefits from bone health to enhanced immunity. Do this
Spring sports are right around the corner! Baseball, softball, tennis, running at a track all of these are getting closer and closer. Playing sports is a great way to move our bodies in ways we otherwise wouldn’t, and competition is great for keeping our fitness fresh. Do this
Start by walking 10-15 minutes twice per day. Gradually add 5 minutes per day until you’re spending about an hour outdoors.
Throw a ball, swing a racket, chase your kids around a park. Dedicate two or three days per week to some athletic activity and watch your fitness grow!
How about a bike ride?
Join a group fitness class outside!
Bike riding has many great benefits for our bodies. It can increase our cardiovascular capacity, strengthen the legs and core, mobilize the hips and knees, and improve posture and coordination.
As the ground gets softer and the temperatures start rising, more group fitness classes will be moving back outside. Group fitness classes are a great way to get moving, build camaraderie, and get us moving after our winter break.
Do this The next time you have a destination of 5 miles or less, use your bike for travel. Make sure that you have a well-fitting backpack in case you need to carry anything with you.
Do this Join your favorite MSC Fitness and Wellness instructors for classes on the lawn, Deck, and around The Club grounds this spring as we move back outside for group fitness classes! Stay up to date with the latest from MSC Fitness and Wellness. Be sure to check your email regularly for Group Fitness updates and outdoor programming as the weather changes.
