March 2022
While snow is still on the ground, Spring is right around the corner. Spring is traditionally a time of renewal and a time to look forward with anticipation and optimism. Renewal seems a particularly relevant focus and theme for our March Shorelines newsletter with an exciting set of March events. The Club wrapped up a busy February with our Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance, the never disappointing BINGO Nights and our new Fridays by the Fire were big draws for members.

The Swim Team wrapped up another wonderful season. You’ll see later in this edition of the Shorelines some highlights and successes they had over the winter months. Congratulations to all our Dolphins on another excellent season. Thank you swimmers, parents, and coaches! For March, please mark your calendar and make your reservation for International Night on March 19, Bring your Own Wine in the Oak Room on March 18 and our final Fridays by the Fire on March 25 in addition to other events this month. The Club is looking forward with a theme of renewal and optimism with the lifting of the Cook County Department of Public Health mask and proof of vaccine mandate. The last two years have certainly presented challenges in the world and in our own community as we all collectively navigated these unprecedented times. We look forward to sharing so many exciting events, news and future plans. We will soon be announcing a new General Manager. The Club is planning for Spring and Summer events for all members inclusive of new family opportunities, programs and summer camp. As mentioned in last month’s Shorelines we are publishing the Membership Survey results and look forward to sharing future capital projects and improvements with all of you! I frequently end the newsletter with a sense of gratitude. I am personally grateful for our loyal and respectful members, our dedicated staff and our experienced and committed professional management team. Onward to Spring! Suzanne M. Eschel President

Thankyou MSC
Membership They say time flies when you’re having fun. For me, this is especially true when I look back at my time with Michigan Shores Club. There are lots of things for me to celebrate as I reflect on the work I have done, the connections and relationships I’ve established with members and the lessons I have learned from the Board and my colleagues. From day one, everyone has been very warm and supportive of me and that is one of the best memories I will take with me. Your intentional care for The Club, fellow members and the staff have made a lasting impression on me and taught me a lot about taking pride in the investments I make both tangible and intangible. It has been so nice watching kids grow up, people go from paddle novice to Team Captains, new connections become lifelong friendships, and all of that in only 4 years. These walls have many stories to tell and decades more to create.
The last few years have been a huge learning curve and the membership has been nothing but gracious, understanding and supportive. It hasn’t been uncommon for members to thank me and the staff for the work we’ve done over the past few years, but your unwavering support has also been deeply appreciated. I will take a lot of fond memoriesof my time at MSC with me as I move on to new opportunities. Michigan Shores Club is poised for continued success and I look forward to watching the membership and staff grow. When I find myself back on the North Shore watch out, I might pop in to talk your ear off! I’d love to stay connected with everyone connect with me on Linkedin! Until next time, keep doing great things! Best, Cody A. Czmyr

Aquatics
Dear Swim Team Families, Each year, we try to define a successful season by measuring both athletic and personal growth; walking out of the season a better swimmer and a better person. The kids' technique, speed, and endurance all improved week to week, and they also learned to become better teammates in the pool and out of the pool.
We asked the kids what their favorite part of the Swim Team was and the majority said that it was about making friends, and in a close second place was the hot tub and Candy Relays! There were many good memories and this season was definitely a success in this current world of COVID-uncertainty.
We hope you continue your swimming and keep an eye out for Michigan Shores Spring and Summer offerings, and we hope to see you again in the Fall for our ‘22-‘23 Swim Season. If you have any questions, please let us know. Congratulations Dolphins on a great season! Sincerely, Mary Lynn, Matt, Rex, and Cooper

Fitness and Wellness
March into Action Whether you hibernated for the winter, or simply spent your exercise time shoveling snow, spring is the perfect time to get back into our fitness routine. As the plants start to bloom and the days get longer, here are some great tips for reigniting our exercise routines.
Get out and walk! If you’ve been trapped inside (due to weather or otherwise) getting out for a walk in the sun can work wonders for our mental state. Not to mention, we can expose ourselves to that great Vitamin D which has been linked to many great benefits from bone health to enhanced immunity. Do this Start by walking 10-15 minutes twice per day. Gradually add 5 minutes per day until you’re spending about an hour outdoors.
How about a bike ride? Bike riding has many great benefits for our bodies. It can increase our cardiovascular capacity, strengthen the legs and core, mobilize the hips and knees, and improve posture and coordination. Do this The next time you have a destination of 5 miles or less, use your bike for travel. Make sure that you have a well-fitting backpack in case you need to carry anything with you.
Not sure where to start?
Spring sports are right around the corner! Baseball, softball, tennis, running at a track all of these are getting closer and closer. Playing sports is a great way to move our bodies in ways we otherwise wouldn’t, and competition is great for keeping our fitness fresh. Do this Throw a ball, swing a racket, chase your kids around a park. Dedicate two or three days per week to some athletic activity and watch your fitness grow!
Join a group fitness class outside! As the ground gets softer and the temperatures start rising, more group fitness classes will be moving back outside. Group fitness classes are a great way to get moving, build camaraderie, and get us moving after our winter break. Do this Join your favorite MSC Fitness and Wellness instructors for group fitness classes in the studio!

Staff Interview
Recently, we sat down with Food and Beverage Manger, Shannon Whaley, to learn a little more about her. Shannon has been instrumental in coordinating the service of the different dining venues, having come to MSC from down the street at the Wilmette Golf Club. MSC | Tell us about yourself.
MSC | Tell us about your time at MSC.
SW | I come from a typical large Irish Catholic
SW | I started working at MSC in August of
family. I am the third child of four and I was born and raised in Chicago. My dad was an architect and my mom was a stay at home mom. I always loved to keep busy. All throughout grammar school and high school, I did volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, and I even did theater. I went to Regina Dominican High School here in Wilmette where my older sister, my mom and all of her sisters went as well.
2021. I just happened to look online at jobs, and I came across MSC. I had a feeling and I just knew I had to apply. I knew I was going to love being a part of this team from the start. The staff and the members are extremely kind - some of the members from the Wilmette Golf Club are members here as well, which I love! I love being in the club industry. I know I will never stray from it again!
When I was a junior in high school, I applied at the Wilmette Golf Club to be a waitress. I thought it was just going to be a summer gig to make enough money to help me in college. I ended out loving it there and ended up working there for 10 years. During my time there, I climbed my way up the ladder starting off as a waitress, then bartender, and then I was promoted to be the manager of the restaurant. I have two beautiful children (Katalina and Santiago) and a dog (Dante) with my awesome husband (Francisco). I took a break from the restaurant industry last April for 5 months and tried something completely out of the ordinary for me. I worked with my sister at Crown Customs & Coatings, one of Chicago's top automotive custom shops. I knew nothing about that industry when I started. All I can say is, the restaurant/club industry is where I am meant to be.

MSC | Do you have a favorite quote?
destinations (and why)?
SW | If you really know me, my life has not
SW | My first place I would go would probably
been the easiest. This is my favorite quote of all time, I always think of it if I am having a rough day.
be Paris. My grandpa was in the army so my dad moved around a lot. He was stationed in France and they lived in Paris for a few years. I would just love to see where my dad lived and also Paris is a beautiful city. My second place I would go would be Bali because of the beaches, nature, and the temples. The third place I would go would be Hawaii. I love the warmer weather! I would love to see a volcano up close and go snorkeling, or scuba diving.
MSC | If a movie were made about your life, who would you want to play you and why?
SW | I think I would have Zooey Deschanel play me. I have no idea why. I just think she is fun and quirky and that's me in a nutshell.
"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on." -Robert Frost MSC | If you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see?
SW | I would want to go back in time to witness all of the strong women fighting for women's rights.
MSC | If you were stuck on an island what three things would you bring?
SW | Definitely my family. That counts as one right? I would not be able to live without other human interactions. I need someone to talk to! My second thing would probably be an endless supply of matches or lighters so we could start fires easily. Lastly, a weapon of some sort so we could hunt and gather food. experience the tradition of excellence
