MSC May Shorelines 2021

May 2021

Greetings Members, During the week in April where the outdoor temperatures crept up close to 80 degrees, I was in Michigan for three days. Upon my return I noticed my garden had exploded with color. It was great thinking winter is over! For some time now, the staff and I have been anticipating and planning for the summer season. We have been hiring additional help, training and visualizing outdoor dining for this year, and we are very excited. Beautiful new outdoor furniture has been ordered and will set a casual yet elegant setting for entertaining. The new furniture includes sectionals and fire pits to make a new and improved lounge area on the Deck. This project is expected to be completed at the end of May, beginning of June.

Easter this year was really one of our first larger events in over a year and it went very well. We had a hybrid buffet and to-go menu in keeping with current restrictions. We are planning on the same for Mother’s Day and utilizing rooms upstairs as well as the outdoor space. Since we are limited in our seating, make your reservation as soon as possible. May is chock-full of activities and programs you and your family can participate in. The first Mother Daughter tea was sold out in days and we had to add another date. The Etiquette Class on May 5 is also full and we will be looking at some other dates in the near future to accommodate the demand. Other events for the month are the Wine Luncheon on May 14, the Lifeguard Certification Course May 14-16, a Wine Education May 15, a Charles Krug Wine Dinner on May 19, Young at Heart on May 30, International Night on May 22, and ending the month with the Memorial Day Cookout on May 31. Please note the Tuesday following Memorial Day, food and beverage service will not be available. See the Club calendar online for complete details on each event. In line with Club events, International Night this year will visit Monte Carlo with gaming tables, Brazil and Carnival with entertainment and dancers and Asian Pacific to round off your travels. This is always a highly successful event that I hope you can attend. Lastly, all of us at MSC are so grateful to the membership for continuing to be supportive during challenging times. Keep an eye out for “Thank You Thursdays” through the month of June where members will enjoy special treats each week on Thursdays. It could be a special dessert, appetizer or cocktail, you never know. It is no wonder that MSC is a Distinguished Club of America. Tom Conroy CCM, CCE General Manager

History of MSC

Club Champion Not every club boasts a National Champion…Claudia Eckert is ours. Born in Chicago in 1916, Claudia Eckert was a prolific amateur swimming champion. Her father, George Eckert, was the swimming and diving coach at the Club, during the 1930’s. Claudia began swimming in events as a youngster. Encouraged by her father, she excelled in the amateur ranks. Claudia was the marquee performer for the Club, during the Depression years. In those early years of swimming, our Club team travelled nationally to compete in amateur events. As our pool was constructed in 1929, it served as a state of the art training facility, during the 30’s. During those Depression years, Coach Eckert’s daughter was an amazing success in the pool. When she was just fifteen years old, she won her first A.A.U. title. By the time she was eighteen years old, Miss Claudia Eckert had been crowned A.A.U. national outdoor diving champion and indoor swimming record holder. She also held the national indoor records in the swimming decathlon. Claudia was the Central A.A.U. record holder in the 100 meter freestyle, 200 yard freestyle, 440 yard freestyle, 100 meter backstroke, all while competing as the undefeated Central A.A.U. high-board diving champion. Needless to say, Claudia was a swimming superstar! Amateur sports historian Robert Pruter went so far as to proclaim Claudia “Chicago’s Greatest Female Aquatic Champion of the Depression Years”. In 1935, she won her swimming decathlon honor. As well, 1936 was another record-breaking year, as she set the low mark in the 100 meter freestyle. All of this was leading to the coveted 1936 Olympic trials for young Miss Eckert. Although she had won multiple diving and swimming championships, Claudia suffered lackluster performances in the Olympic trials.

To the great surprise and dismay of many, she failed to qualify for the team in either swimming or diving. Despite this setback, Claudia continued her pursuit of excellence at Northwestern University. Even after graduating from college, she continued her winning ways. In 1938, she won both the 40 yard and 100 yard freestyles, setting new A.A.U. records. Later that year, she also set a new A.A.U. record in the 220 yard freestyle. By 1939, she was once again crowned A.A.U. champion in the 100, 200, and 400 meter freestyle. This led many to believe that she would be a “shoe-in” for the 1940 Olympic team. Unfortunately, due to the war in Europe, the 1940 games were cancelled. However, the United States Olympic Committee decided to “select” a women’s swimming team, regardless. Of course, Eckert was a part of this team! She remains our own Club Olympian. Then, with her legacy complete, Miss Eckert largely withdrew from competitive swimming. Claudia Eckert is also credited with being a pioneer of water ballet or synchronized swimming, as it is now known. Our Club was one of the earliest to organize a water ballet team, thanks in large part to George and Claudia Eckert. As you can see, the Eckert family legacy launched all the competitive swimming, diving and water ballet programs at the Club. Did you realize that you swim in the same pool as Claudia? Indeed, we maintain the original 1929 pool that propelled her to greatness. Next time you stroll by, remember the great Claudia Eckert. Swimmer, diver, and water ballet pioneer…she was a true Club Champion! David H. Melsheimer Club Historian

2021 is here and we are ready for it! The Club has already started to plan Club events and members are planning their parties as well. At The Club, we host all kinds of events from meetings to weddings with no event too small nor too big. Recently, we are experiencing a flow of pool and bowling parties as members are ready to plan their children’s and grandchildren’s special day. Last minute weddings are still coming in to book for the 2021 year! Fridays and Sundays are available throughout the remainder of the year. If you know someone looking for a venue, encourage them to consider Michigan Shores Club. As a reminder, we can take sponsored non-member events, so please consider sponsoring and/or recommending your Club to friends, organizations and colleagues. The sponsoring process is effortless — just one call from you and then I will work directly with the host. We also allow for events like bar/bat mitzvahs to book two years out for their celebrations. I am here to assist with all aspects for your events, such as itineraries, checking in with vendors, renting chairs, linen, set up place cards and so forth. We have a complete culinary team on site to customize menus, wedding cakes, dessert stations and full on action stations. As we maneuver around COVID-19, safety guidelines are in place so that everyone feels safe to host their events at The Club. MSC staff will continue to wear masks, tables will remain 6 feet apart, hand sanitizers are visibly in place and accessible and we continue to keep everyone educated with the guidelines issued by ILDPH & CCDPH. I look forward to planning your next event! Feel free to contact me and get started at iaceves@michiganshores.org Irene Aceves Director of Catering

Michigan Shores Club is truly lucky to have qualified and established professionals leading different areas of The Club. One such staff member, Lloy Johnston, has not only excelled in her role as Director of Aquatics over the past two years, but before her time here, Lloy was a decorated athlete at Knox College. Recently, Knox College and their affiliated conference, The Midwest Conference (MWC), recognized Lloy in the Centennial Celebration, 100 years of intercollegiate competition. The Celebration recognizes athletes for their athletic and academic achievements of 100 former student-athletes from the fifteen institutions that currently sustain, or at some point in history maintained, full membership with the league. Read the press release from MWC in recognition of Lloy:

During her remarkable career as a student-athlete at Knox, Lloy Brodnicki Johnston lettered in three sports: track, swimming, and soccer. As a member of the Knox women's track team, Lloy set school records in the 100 and 400 meter hurdles in her first season and went on to win both events that year at the Midwest Conference meet. Three years later, as a senior, she swept both events again and was recognized by the conference as the league's MVP. Lloy was also invited to the NCAA Division III national championships three times in the 100 meter hurdles. Lloy lettered all four years as a member of the women's swim team. As a swimmer, she excelled primarily as a member of the 200 freestyle relay team. Lloy achieved immense success on the soccer field. Simply put, she is the most decorated women's soccer player to ever compete for Knox. Lloy was a three-year captain and three-time team MVP. She was an All-Midwest Conference selection during the four seasons she played at Knox and was named an All-American three different times. Lloy holds the Knox women's soccer records for most career goals (55), career points (128), and assists in a single game (5). Former women's soccer coach, Jane Stangl says, "Without a doubt, Lloy was the finest athlete I coached while at Knox – in fact, she may be the best athlete I coached my entire coaching history." Former Knox Athletic Director, Harley Knosher, has said, "Lloy is the personification of what we would like to see every Knox student-athlete be." After graduating from Knox in 1994, Lloy served as the head women's soccer coach in the fall of 1995, leading the team to an 11-5 season and a conference playoff appearance. Help us in congratulating Lloy on this tremendous accomplishment. We are lucky to have her on the Michigan Shores Club team.

Fitness

What is Power training and why is it important? As we age, the number one physical attribute we lose is our power. No we aren’t talking about being able to deadlift 600 pound. Power is the body’s ability to react, change direction quickly, and reduce and produce force at speeds that are functionally applicable to the task at hand (think slipping on the ice and recovering your footing before you fall). Power training is for everyone regardless of age or ability and has a direct link to healthy aging. Power training helps us develop stronger, more resilient connective tissue - specifically tendons, ligaments, and joint capsules - which reduces the risk of injuries like sprains and strains.

With Power training in mind, we are excited to introduce our latest member challenge: The Power Zone Challenge!

What is The Power Zone Challenge? This challenge is meant to help you get started or reinforce training your explosive muscles safely and with low impact. There will be two options for the events, one being more shoulder friendly for those that have trouble bringing weight overhead. Members can choose to do both if they wish. Divisions will be broken down into Men’s and Women’s with two subdivisions separated by the weight chosen to lift. There will be a live leaderboard, updated after each day of events, where members can see the current standings. Prizes will be given out to the top participants in each sub-division. Details to follow. The event will run Saturdays and Sundays May 15th - June 6th from 8:00 am to 9:30 am in half hour intervals. The first 20 minutes will be dedicated to instruction focusing on mobility and technique with lighter than competition weights. The last 10 minutes will be open to those that wish to test that day

5-Minute One Arm Floor-to-Chest Clean VIEW VIDEO Participants are allowed to switch arms as many times as necessary. A repetition starts with the weight touching the floor and ends with the weight at shoulder height, in front of the crest. Men | 35 pound dumbbell Women | 25 pound dumbbell

5-Minute One Arm Floor-to-Overhead Snatch VIEW VIDEO Participants are allowed to switch arms as many times as necessary. A repetition starts with the weight touching the floor and ends with the weight held straight overhead. Men | 35 or 25 pound dumbbell Women | 25 or 20 pound dumbbell

Paddle

Paddle Champions On Saturday, April 17, MSC Members Dan and Stephanie McGuire became champions. Champions of the 2021 Illinois State Mixed-Doubles Paddle Championships. The Illinois Married Mixed tournament, an event part of the American Platform Tennis Association, was held on 72 courts across 16 different Clubs. We caught up with the champions to learn a bit more about their experience. MSC: Tell us about the overall experience of the championships.

MSC: How confident were you going into the championships?

D&S M: It was a very popular event with roughly 9 divisions of 16 teams this year. The event is broken down similarly to golf, from skill level combing the player indexes of both the husband and wife. We were fortunate to win the top division. It was a beautiful day and we met several new couples we have never played, but hope to play with socially soon. We have been in this tournament on and off spanning back 25 years.

D&S M: Truth be told though I always think we are going to win but Steph has always had much more realistic expectations. We balance each other out. We went into the tournament not very confident we could win, but thought we could compete.

The nice thing for all couples is that it’s competitive but very social as well. The finals of each division are played at one Club, usually Sunset Ridge, and there is a real festive party and gathering as well. The event is run by MSC members John & Sharon Watrous. They do a tremendous job as there are so many moving pieces trying to organize a State event of this size. John is also the one responsible for talking us into entering the event this year as I was fighting some nagging injuries and Steph wasn’t sure she wanted to do it either. We're glad we did! MSC: How many teams participated? D&S M: There was an A, B, C and D flight with 16 teams in each. We are confident that we can compete well in this event based on our experience and ability but also realistically know that we are in our 50’s and we jokingly say “on the back nine of our paddle careers".

12

www.michiganshores.org 847-251-4100

MSC: How is it being a mixed-doubles champion with your spouse? D&S M: It is nice to win with your spouse but we have also been after this championship for many years. We always joke that the goal is to stay married. We have also had some legendary matches in this tournament over the years usually with some very unique motivational pep talks (by Dan). Some of these are well known through our circle of friends. What’s funny is that we are very different and can keep a good sense of humor in the heat of competition. One story that epitomizes some good married mixed humor of Dan & Steph. One time Steph was going to serve to win a match a couple of years ago and I grabbed the ball, walked towards her, put the ball in her hand, and leaned down as if to give her strategy talk but instead whispered “sweep the leg”. It is a caption out of Karate Kid where the Cobra Kai instructor told that to Johnny Lawrence in his fight with Daniel Larusso. Steph’s reply was “get up to the net you meathead”. Humor like this keeps it light in the heat of battle.

This was our 5th trip to the finals however we might have been underdogs in each of them given the tennis pedigree of our opponents in those matches. I’m sure glad though we are no longer the Buffalo Bills. MSC: What’s your favorite thing about paddle? D&SM: The combination of high competition along with the social aspect of meeting great people from many different clubs and park districts. We love the people we’ve met and being outdoors in the fresh air even when it’s cold and playing a sport we both love is a favorite.

MSC: Now that you’re the 2021 Illinois State Champions, what’s next? D&SM: We love to play with friends, family and teammates. We hope to continue to play as long as our bodies allow us too. Now we are focusing on pickleball as it transitions pretty well from paddle tennis. If you see Dan and Steph around The Club or on the courts, give them a big congratulations! A state championship is certainly something to be proud of and we look forward to hearing many more successful results from these two over the years.

Incidentally we were introduced to paddle tennis when we were dating by Steph’s parents Dick & Barb Kindig former Michigan Shores members who were accomplished players in their own day.

About the Illinois Married Mixed MSC Members John & Sharon Watrous have been organizing the event for decades. For the 4th year in a row, the Illinois Mixed Married tournament benefited Connections for the Homeless, an impressive organization working on the North Shore to end homelessness through eviction prevention, shelter and housing programs.

A Paddle Season in Review As the Fall 2020 Paddle Season was about to begin, there was plenty of uncertainty. Will there be a men’s league? A women’s league? Will there be a drop in participation? Paddle is one of the most social sports for adults in the Midwest and East coast and with COVID-19 restrictions putting a major dampener on socializing and post paddle hangouts, we all wondered how much this would affect our paddle program. Well, it turns out that members loved the idea of participating in an activity that was outside. In fact, MSC paddle grew more this year than any other year. Roughly a 15-20% increase in new member participation! In total, MSC paddle grew from 22 teams to 25 teams through the addition of two new ladies daytime teams and one additional ladies night league team. A quick glance at the court reservations will show that Friday, Saturday and Sunday courts were at maximum usage during the official paddle season (October - March). How did our teams do you ask? Eleven of our thirteen men’s teams qualified for playoffs. The average season finish of all 13 MSC men’s teams was 4th place. Our women’s teams also had a great year! On average, our ladies’ teams averaged 3rd place throughout the Fall and Winter seasons. A special shoutout to the men’s and women’s teams for their first-place finishes

14

www.michiganshores.org 847-251-4100

So, what’s to come this Spring and Summer? We have Thursday night Men’s in-house leagues; Friday morning ladies in-house leagues; Monday night ladies in-house leagues; plus, plenty of classes and lesson opportunities for members interested in learning to play this fun game outdoors! Oh, and I almost forgot to mention our Co-ed Tuesday night pickleball league is about to start. We have lots to choose from so please feel free to email cwarner@michiganshores.org if you’re wanting to participate in any of these great programs! It might be time to try out something new! A special thank you to Chuck Glew (Men’s Paddle Chair), Laura Mostofi (Women’s Paddle Chair), Stephanie Foster (Women’s Paddle Coordinator), Julie Reighard (Assist Pro), and Charlie Campbell (Assist Pro) for helping make this our best year of paddle yet! The program wouldn’t be what it is without your passion and dedication to this game, we love you all! Chris Warner Paddle Director
