MSC History
Golf History at MSC 1898-Present With a Ryder Cup victory safely in hand, it would seem an opportune time to revisit Club golf history. Before the snow catches us, we can imagine green fairways, one more time. In old Wilmette, the thick forests of the Ouilmette Indian Reserve had been transferred into private hands, during the 1840’s. By the l890’s, this portion of Wilmette was still only modestly populated with homes. There was little need for mass development, with a population of less than 2,000. It was during this time that our Club was founded (1898). A clubhouse was constructed near 9th and Ashland and golf links laid out. The six-hole course stretched from the clubhouse to Lake Michigan. However, the Wilmette landscape was rapidly changing. Sheridan Road opened (1900), and this began the “paving” of the Village. Less than ten years later, the land comprising the golf course had been surrounded by road construction, and sub-division planning was accelerating. The Club moved from the 9th and Ashland location, after a fire (1905). Land was purchased overlooking a park-like setting, along the lakefront. A new clubhouse was constructed at our current location (1905), alongside the golf course. Alas, the Club was only able to utilize the course four additional seasons. The golf links were finally abandoned (1909). A year or so prior, the Kenilworth Club had witnessed development of the area around their golf course, as well. In turn, a new golf club was formed on unincorporated property in West Kenilworth (1908). The North Shore Golf Club (now North Shore Country Club in Glenview) attracted some of the displaced golfers from both communities.

This ended our Club’s foray into golf. Or did it? Over the years, the Club debated whether to purchase land for the development of a golf course. After the Club absorbed the members of the Century Club of Evanston (1927), the topic was discussed again. While the idea of a full-blown golf course lacked support, another idea came to light. When Daniel Burnham, Jr. designed our current building (1928), he included plans for Indoor Golf on the second floor of the Club. In fact, the area that now comprises the Oak Room was originally designed to house Indoor Golf. During the early 1900’s, Indoor Golf had become a pastime of the top amateur players in the Chicago area. An organization named the Indoor Golf School on Wabash Avenue in Chicago led the charge. You may recognize names like Charles “Chick” Evans (Evans Scholars) and Chandler Egan (1904 Olympic Medalist in Golf). These top amateurs would retreat from the winter weather of Chicago to play competitive Indoor Golf. As well, competitive high school and college teams participated in Indoor Golf leagues.
MSC History
A far cry from miniature golf, Indoor Golf was played with all the clubs in your bag. Although they used terms like brassey, cleek, midiron, and mashie, it was played as regular golf would be. An actual course would be selected and the distances measured. Nets were setup with demarcation of various distances depending on the direction and trajectory of each shot. Upon reaching the green distance, a putt was attempted on a carpet covered with oiled sand to mimic the action on an actual surface. These distances and shots were added cumulatively to determine the final scores.
Much like the golf simulators of today, Indoor Golf provided a competitive way to keep your game sharp in the winter. So, although our formal golf links (1898-1909) faded into the cloud of development, the tradition continued with Indoor Golf. Next time you make a reservation in the Oak Room, specify a table for “FORE”. Even today, our golf members keep the flame burning. For the past fifteen years, the Club has enjoyed a resurgence in golf membership. Consider becoming a full golf member and keep the tradition alive. David H. Melsheimer Club Historian

Recipe Roundup
A look inside the kitchen. Please help us in congratulating Melissa Buchmann on claiming the title of MSC Chili Cook-Off Winner! Her fan-favorite chili will now be on the menus for the fall during football season. Hurry in and give it a try - you will not be disappointed!
Mom's Chili Melissa Joy Dobbins Buchmann (aka Missy Beans) Ingredients:
Instructions:
• 2+ pounds lean ground beef (85-90% lean)
• 2 cans diced tomatoes
Brown ground beef in a large pot or dutch oven. Add onion and peppers and cook until almost tender. Add tomatoes and seasonings. Cover and simmer gently for approximately 2 hours, adding bean liquid (not the beans yet) and water a little at a time to keep the consistency of thick soup. Add beans at the end until warm (the last 30 minutes)
• 5 tbsp chili powder
Optional:
• 4 tsp salt
At the very end you can add in some shredded sharp cheddar cheese (thickens and makes it creamy vs. dark and juicy) or add in a tiny bit of brown sugar- a little goes a long way- it seems to warm it up and take any "bitter" edge off.
• 2 large yellow onions (or white or red) • 1 large green bell pepper • 1 large red bell pepper • 1 can tomato paste (6oz)
• 2+ tsp paprika (or smoky paprika or chipotle pepper sauce- this is my secret ingredient) • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper • 1/2 tsp black or white pepper • a pinch of cinnamon • 3+ cans of beans (I like to use a variety of different colors- light or red kidney, cannellini, black, navy, chili, etc.)
Serve with all the trimmings- avocado/guacamole, green onions, sour cream, shredded cheese, saltines or oyster crackers, garlic bread, or serve over pasta/macaroni
This recipe began in 1960 in a Betty Crocker Cookbook given to my mom (8 years before I was born) by her friend Linda "Pete" Peterson from Marshalltown, Iowa. Since that time, my mom (Gail Dobbins) created many variations of it and passed those down to me 16 years ago in 2005. In the past 16 years I have made this recipe for family and friends countless times, adjusting the ingredients every time. It has become one of our family favorites and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Fitness and Wellness
Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to learn from legendary fitness coach Dan John. Check out his Youtube page or website by Google searching his name. The workshop was the Russian Kettlebell Challenge Level 2, or RKC II. Some quick background on Dan - he is 64 years old and has been coaching athletes of every level, from postpartum moms to Olympians to teenage track athletes to NFL players for 40 years. He has seen it all and done it all and he knows what works. When I was presented with the opportunity to spend a weekend learning from him (22 hours over a two-day span), I couldn’t say no.
There were workouts that left me lying on the floor, sweating, glad to have simply finished. All while rehabbing a torn tendon in my left knee.
The RKC is more than simply a workshop. There are rigorous physical standards in addition to morning, afternoon, and evening workouts (basically anytime the instructor decides). All the while, the student is expected to learn to instruct others in proper kettlebell training, even while fatigued. The physical standards are strictly judged by the course instructor, and about 30% of students that attempt these courses fail. These workshops attract people from all over the world. During my weekend in New York, I met people from Sweden, Russia, New Jersey, and Puerto Rico.
(the one I wasn’t sure I could pass) I was nearly
When I completed the RKC I in October 2018, I knew that my life and career had changed. I could feel energy and passion I had never known before. The flood of emotion I felt after achieving all of my physical, coaching, and written tests and being awarded the title of RKC Instructor was immense. There were 16 students in my RKC I class, only 11 of us passed.
In total, there are 14 physical tests required to complete the RKC II. Some are simply repeats from the RKC I, while others are some of the most difficult physical movements I have ever encountered. These tests are sprinkled throughout the weekend at various intervals, and I am not afraid to say that after my 14th and final test in tears after finishing. All in all, I learned so much. I learned to be a better coach, to be a stronger lifter, and to be a more complete person. I learned about the pain of achieving a goal, and how to better instruct the windmill. I learned about the real reasons people train, and how to “hear” an exercise. I learned that heaving, sweating, and gasping for air can be the best way to learn, and so can sharing a beer with a coaching legend (or anyone you look up to). I learned that 20 years from now, I hope to still seek out challenges like the RKC II. And I learned to appreciate the journey, because that might just be the most important part of achieving a goal.
In July of this year, I decided to begin training for the RKC II. The training was intense - more so than any other program I have ever undertaken myself. There were days that I wanted to quit. There were days that I said to myself “I don’t need this. No one knows I’m doing this. If I stop now, no one will care.”

As the oldest of 5, I shared responsibility for household tasks such as caring for younger siblings, tending the garden, hunting, raising chickens, cleaning and cooking. At age 10 I began helping my father work in a furniture store, which took 1 hour (one way) of transport. Fast forward, I am thankful to have been able to put myself through college while working full time. However, what captures my heart most are my 9 children; Xander (21), Hazel (17), Sofia (16), Cassie and Julius (13), Violet (9), Nazareth (6), Vashti and Emiliano (3).
wasn’t too long before Covid hit and our staff and members were challenged in many ways. I feel this was a huge test of character for all and our staff really shined. Even the ones who were furloughed, although sad, were very understanding of the situation. The members were also incredible in the way they supported us. The way everyone came together really speaks volumes of the character of the Club.
