November 2020
Hello Members, I hope this message finds you and your family well and safe in these unprecedented times as we enjoy the transition from summer to the beautiful fall weather and colorful foliage. It's November and I personally find this to be a month of thankfulness and gratitude with family and friends. I am reflecting even more poignantly on these themes during the uncertain times of COVID-19. Our holiday season calendar of traditional family festivities and events, while many will look different this year, will continue and are all in the planning stages and will be announced shortly.
Board Membersers Suzanne M. Eschel President Benjamin Rodman Vice President Laura K. Mostofi Secretary Charles E. Glew Treasurer

Kicking off the holidays is our annual Grand Wine Tasting on November 14. I suggest you “sign up to stock up” on wines and spirits for the holiday season. Reservations are required, no walk-in’s permitted. A brochure will be available online in advance of the event. With the change in weather and the move to more inside dining, please visit our newest dining venue, the South End Café! This light filled venue with a new and fresh menu includes a new pizza oven, rotisserie oven, adult and kid-friendly milkshakes and more! The South End Café will be open Friday lunch through Sunday dinner. The Bellows Club Room will continue to be open six days a week. Please check out the new menu on the website! Carry out operations will continue to be available from both venues. Finally, in the spirit of thankfulness, I am so grateful and so proud of the entire MSC Management Team and Staff that has come together with such commitment, energy and creativity to bring amazing services and so many diverse programs to our membership. Not surprising to me, the staff have really gone the extra mile and contributed so much to member engagement and experience. I have talked to so many members who are equally proud of this amazing and committed team. MSC members have a tradition of generosity in support of our staff in November with the annual Holiday Employee Fund. You will be receiving your letter in the mail in November. We have an opportunity as members to continue in the tradition of gratitude by supporting the annual Holiday Employee Fund. Thank you for your commitment to Michigan Shores Club. I wish you good health and wellbeing.

Veterans Day Tribute
This month, let's honor our Veterans. Growing up in a military family, I have recognized the importance of Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, and all the other little holidays in between. It is the sacrifice of the servicemen and women that have allowed us many of the freedoms we have today. But it is not just because of my family that I recognize the importance of supporting and saluting our armed forces, but it is also members of the Michigan Shores Club community that have served our country proudly. As we celebrate Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11, let us recognize one of MSC’s very own Veterans, Tasha Benecke. I recently posed a few questions to Mrs. Benecke about her time in the military and how it has shaped who she is today. Mrs. Benecke is a proud member of the United States Army. She concluded her service achieving her final rank as Captain. While in the Army, Tasha was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Military Police Corps. After Airborne School and the Officer Basic Course her first assignment was with the 212th Military Police Company stationed in Germany; though half of her time there was spent deployed in a peace-keeping mission to Bosnia-Herzegovina. Mrs. Benecke tributes this as the most memorable part of her Army career. After a few years in Europe, Tasha returned stateside to Fort Campbell, KY where she served as a Battalion Training Officer with the 716th Military Police Battalion. Her final assignment was as the Executive Officer for the Sabalauski Air Assault School at Ft. Campbell, KY where she had the opportunity to earn her Air Assault, Pathfinder, and Rappel Master Certifications.

When asked why she decided to join the military, she said: “If I am honest, I chose the Army because I saw it as the best pathway for me to get a great education both in and out of the classroom. At the age of 17, I wasn’t clear about what I really wanted to pursue in life. The Army appealed to me along with their promise of training, travel, and college support. Those are the reasons I joined, but the reason I stayed was the incredible sense of purpose, pride and accomplishment I felt everyday working alongside my fellow soldiers.” While the military was able to attract her into enlisting, it was also in her blood. Her father served two years in Germany in the late 1960’s during Vietnam and her grandfather served four years with time spent mostly in Asia during WWII. Mrs. Benecke was able to further her roots in the military as it was in the United States Military Academy that she met her husband, Jack. “After school we both went on to pursue our military careers independently, Jack as an Army Ranger and a Field Artillery Officer at Fort Campbell, KY and I became a Military Police Officer in Germany. We reconnected in late December 1996 and “Joined Forces” for life back at Fort Campbell in August of 1997.”
During Tasha’s time in the military, she took with her three simple, but largely important lessons that we can all live by:
•
If you are on time, you are 5 minutes late.
•
You can never be over-prepared, always have a plan B and plan C
•
Practice doesn’t always mean perfect. Practice is to ensure readiness when things don’t go perfectly and knowing how to respond when things don’t go as planned (see plan B and/or C).
One gets a lot of fulfillment and pride by serving in the armed forces. “Be all you can be” was the Army’s slogan from 1980 – 2001 and is still true today. Tasha says that serving in the Military taught her how to challenge herself in ways she never could have imagined (academically, physically, spiritually). It is while serving that she learned the impact personal accountability, teamwork, trust and respect has on the overall success of our missions big and small.
“The Military remains a great example of diverse teams pulling together to solve complex problems in pursuit of a common goal (regardless of age, gender, race, orientation or religion) and I am most proud to say that I am an American and I had the honor to serve our country as a member of the Armed Forces.” We are honored to have members like Tasha Benecke within the membership. We recognize that she is one of many MSC members who have served our country proudly and we salute you all. As we recognize Veterans’ day this year on November 11, be sure to thank those in your life for their commitment to the country and our freedoms. Cody A. Fitness & Wellness
Benefits to exercising in cold weather (seriously!) The shift to colder weather often comes with some negative effects on our health and bodies. It can create feelings of lethargy (crippling our motivation) and of course comes with a decrease in sunlight. Studies show that the average winter weight gain ranges from 5-10 pounds. But before we take to our annual hibernation, consider these benefits to cold-weather workouts.
1. Getting outside for even a small walk or workout will expose you to precious sunlight.
That extra exposure can improve mood, and help with vitamin D intake.
2. Winter exercise can help boost
Of course, even with all of these benefits, make sure to listen to your body and take care in extreme weather. Start your workout with layers, and adjust down as you warm up. If you’re looking for help with programming or motivation, join one of our outdoor group fitness classes on the Deck by clicking HERE!
your immunity, something we can all use right now!
Studies from the CDC have shown that a few minutes a day in the cold can help prevent simple bacterial and viral infections.
3. Shivering (while not the most
enjoyable activity) is a method our body uses to produce heat. Studies have shown that people can expend up to 5 times as many calories shivering as they do resting.
4. Burn stored fat, regardless of the type of exercise.
Some studies have shown that being outside in cold weather can transform white fat, specifically belly and thigh fat, into calorie-burning beige or brown fat.
5. Our bodies are better at regulating our temperature in the cold. This means you can often exercise farther or longer (potentially burning even more calories), according to AHA.

Things are getting colder and colder as the seasons change. But the MSC Aquatics Center is heating up (to 84°). Join us in the pool or hot tub and melt away the seasonal blues in the warm waters of MSC.

Please remember that face masks are required whenever you are not swimming in the Aquatics Center. And, social distancing of 6 ft or more will continue to be enforced. • In keeping with adjustments in the Aquatics Center, members who are no-show or cancel their lane within 24 hours prior to their reservation will be charged a $10 fee. • We would like to request that members do not reserve lanes in back to back hours in the morning hours. “I just want to let you know I hit the 500 mile mark on Saturday. Thanks for coming up with the patch club. I’ve had many days where reaching my goal and crossing off a few more boxes has given me the needed motivation to come to the pool. You and your staff have made all of my workouts a little easier knowing I am swimming with people who care. Next up: 600 miles.” - Rick Drake
