October 2020

Hello Michigan Shores Members, I hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy in these strange times. In the last article from The Club’s President, Suzanne Eschel, she mentioned many of the exciting projects around The Club that have been or will be completed. I want to expand on that a bit, but not just on the physical plant.

Board Membersers Suzanne M. Eschel President Benjamin Rodman Vice President Laura K. Mostofi Secretary Charles E. Glew Treasurer

Board of Directors Cathy Albrecht Richard O. Doran Suzanne M. Eschel Charles E. Glew Edward J. Hungler Nicole F. Keenan David H. Melsheimer Laura K. Mostofi Eileen A. Noren Matthew J. Revord Benjamin Rodman

In our Long Range Strategic Plan refresher this past fall, it was decided that a Capital Reserve Study would benefit Michigan Shores tremendously for future capital replacements, ongoing maintenance, proper budgeting and assured needed resources. Essentially keeping “this old house” in the best shape it can be with few surprises. The study was delayed by the pandemic but is now complete. This is an excellent tool for the Maintenance Team, Board and Management for future planning. There are 452 components listed with their life expectancy and planned replacement dates. This process is used in many Clubs across the country and condominium associations. As the inclement weather begins to move in, our thoughts and plans naturally turn to how can we transition the operations indoors in a member-centric and safe manner to ensure that members and staff feel safe and confident. As you know, we have consistently followed recommendations from the IDPH, CDC and other organizations as our guidance at this time. Recently we have installed UV ray lights in all of our HVAC systems, proven to kill bacteria and viruses. We are going a step further, by installing an Ionization (positive, negative air flow) in the Fitness & Wellness Center. This system also kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, including COVID viruses. The same system is used in hospitals, laboratories, schools and sports venues. This is an added protection that you can feel comfortable about. It will be installed in the next couple of weeks at which time more information will be distributed to the membership. Since this year is like no other, the staff have been collaborating on what would have been our traditional Club events. We have had to make some adjustments in our logistics but we have come up with good solutions. This year’s Oktoberfest has two seatings with 40 person requirements for each seating. We have a fantastic menu planned and live instrumental German music. You create the table you are comfortable with, maximum six persons. The Grand Wine Tasting this year will be in hourly shifts beginning at 4:00 pm with a maximum of 50 persons per shift to accommodate everyone that wishes to attend. We are truly being creative and thoughtful in our planning and approach. I think we are taking lemons and making lemonade!

President's Letter Continued.

Mark your calendar for the new South End Café opens Friday, October 16. The South End Café hours of operations will be Friday through Sunday, 11:00 am until 4:00 pm for lunch service and 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm for dinner service. The South End will be closed one hour in the afternoon for required cleaning and sanitizing. The South End will feature a separate menu from the Bellows and you can find it on-line. We will be offering a daily wine selection and local craft beers. Finally, as a Distinguished Club of America, we are required to be reviewed annually to maintain that status. Recently, the Principal that monitors the Distinguished Clubs from The Boardroom Magazine, a private Club publication, contacted me to review our operations, member communications and particularly our strategy and results during the current pandemic. He was genuinely impressed with the Board and Management’s strategies to weather through this and the creativity in keeping members engaged, one of the best he has ever seen. As always, we thank you for your support and dedication to Michigan Shore Club. It is truly a pleasure to be able to serve the membership and act as a resource to you and your families. Thomas Conroy, CCM, CCE General Manager

What is a Distinguished Club? Simply the best of the best Private Clubs. To be a Distinguished Club is to be one of only a few, highly select private clubs that are recognized as providing a Member Experience at a level attained by only the finest clubs in the world. Distinguished Clubs are determined by a thorough vetting and awarding process conducted by BoardRoom magazine’s Distinguished Clubs team of industry specialists.

A club must be a Distinguished Club in “good standing,” which means, among other criteria, that The Club has earned Distinguished Club award status in accordance with Distinguished Club's awarding methodology within the past 12 months.

Aquatics

On October 6, the MSC Dolphins Swim Team returns to the afternoon Aquatics schedule through February 10. In honor of the start of swim season, the aquatics team is sharing a few drills to strengthen your butterfly stroke (and build your strength and endurance).

1. By the “side of the pool”: Mimic the mechanics of the butterfly stroke with great precision out of the water by the side of the pool, making one leg kick – bending your knees slightly – as your hands “enter the water” and another when they reach your sides (basic drill before beginning the others).

2. With short fins: Swim the butterfly with short fins on your feet, taking one arm stroke for every 3-4 leg kicks.

3. One arm only Swim the butterfly using just one arm without moving the other or with it extended out in front of you or along your side. It is extremely important to breathe forwards and not laterally when performing this drill.

4. Breaststroke legs with lateral breathing: Swim the butterfly making a breaststroke leg kick every arm stroke, breathing once to the right and once to the left, attempting to keep your head underwater as much as possible.

5. Freestyle legs Swim the butterfly using a freestyle leg kick. Try to keep your shoulders above the water when performing this drill.

8

www.michiganshores.org 847-251-4100

6. Variable entry Swim the butterfly making sure your hands enter the water approximately 50 cm apart for the first arm stroke, approximately 25 cm apart for the second stroke and then together for the third stroke before returning to the initial 50 cm for 4th arm stroke.

7. Underwater recovery Swim the butterfly without the aerial part (recovery) of the arm stroke, keeping your arms below your chest and trying to go as deep as possible with your shoulders by thrusting your back powerfully downwards.

8. Clenched fists Swim the butterfly with clenched fists, keeping your arms and legs as coordinated.

9. Extended arms Swim the butterfly describing a semicircle during the underwater phase (pull) of the arm stroke.

10. One leg kick Swim the butterfly making just one leg kick for every complete arm cycle, inserting it at the end of the pull phase right before beginning the recovery phase above the water. We look forward to seeing you in the pool giving these tips a try. In any case, do not try and perform all these drills in one single session, they can really strain your shoulders and back.

Fitness & Wellness

Fitness Tips for the Virtual School Year! With the virtual school year kicking off, our at-home workspaces are going to be a lot more crowded. Here are some tips for keeping everyone in the house happy and healthy during the day.

1. Working and studying from home? Make sure to get up and walk around (even in circles if you must!) for at least three minutes every hour. Try to get up and move around in shifts to create some space from the rest of the home.

2. Drink lots of water! One of the sneakiest detriments to our health during home-time is over-snacking. Drinking lots of water and staying properly hydrated will make those snacks less appealing. Have a water bottle nearby to remind you to hydrate during school or work.

3. Get outside when you can!

Set a timer for 30 second intervals. Perform the first exercise for 30 seconds followed by 30 seconds of rest, then move to the second exercise and repeat. When you finish the circuit, rest for 1-2 minutes, then repeat. Try to finish each entire circuit 3-4 times.

Circuit 1

Circuit 2

Bodyweight Squat

Burpee

Push ups

Mountain Climbers

Jumping Jacks

Bodyweight Lunges

Sit ups

Plank hold

A quick walk around the block can work wonders for our mental and physical health. Change your scenery!

4. Separate your work space from your lounging space. Let your environment create natural barriers between work and rest as best as you can. Try to work from a chair instead of the couch. This is especially important for students learning things for the first time.

5. Make time for a workout! Here is a quick workout you can use to move your body, sweat a little, and break up your day. Challenge the kids and work alternately so you can pump each other up during rest periods:
