Hello Michigan Shores Members, I hope this message finds you and your family well, safe, and enjoying the rest of summer in these unprecedented times. I hope this message finds you and your family well, staying safe, and enjoying the rest of summer in these unprecedented times. This is my first Shorelines article as the new President of Michigan Shores Club. I would like to personally thank Richard O. Doran for both our long friendship and his service as President, leading the Board over the last two years, and especially during the COVID pandemic, for which the Board had no precedent. I am pleased that Richard will remain a member of the Board of Directors.

While this is certainly a novel time that presents uncertainty for many, I am - and we should all collectively be - grateful for the amazing MSC community that has come together over the last few months. Our vibrant community is comprised of our valued members, the Board of Directors, our executive management team and our amazing, dedicated and resilient staff. Everyone in our community has “showed up” and contributed to the MSC family. The Board and I want to let you know that we have committed to closely monitor and adhere to the phased reopening of Illinois; The Club will evolve operations and amenities according to Restore Illinois guidelines from Governor Pritzker as well as local directives. During COVID, being able to offer inside and outside dining, virtual wine tastings, Dog Days on the Lawn, Saturday Nights Live, paddle tennis, open gym in the Fitness Center, personal training, outdoor fitness classes, swimming, MSC Kids’ Summer Camp, an extended summer camp into the fall, virtual events (book clubs, happy hour, trivia, bingo – to name a few) and MSC Works has been so well-received and attended by members. It has provided some sense of normalcy to our Club and the lives of our members. In late August,The Club introduced MSC Learns to give students and parents a safe place for quiet study and a needed change of scenery. These are some of the many amenities that the Club staff has creatively implemented. Bravo, MSC management and staff! Let me share a few highlights of the improvements made to the Clubhouse in the last six months. The south end of The Club has now been completely transformed with the completion of the renovated and modernized South End Café (formerly Chatterbox and Park View Grill). This beautiful light filled room will provide more capacity for families and all members. It is a knockout space. You can see the virtual video tour and photos on the MSC website. Specials from the menu are also being featured on the Patio! During a planned renovation of the Canterbury Room, spectacular herringbone wood floors were revealed. The floors were professionally refinished with an addition of brand-new area rugs. It transforms the room. Finally, the paddle decking was completely replaced and a new awning was added over the North Porch stairs.

Thank you to our members! Because of membership engagement and retention, and sound financial and operational management, The Club is on solid financial footing to manage through the pandemic and into the future. We maintain a membership waitlist and between March and August we added 17 new members.
Nicole F. Keenan The Board would like to thank Kevin R. Lawler, who is retiring from the Board, for his substantial service as a Director and Treasurer. Additionally, please welcome Eileen A. Noren as our newest Director. Eileen will chair our Marketing Committee. Please check the MSC website under My Club for the presentation materials from the Annual Meeting of Equity Members. We shared a detailed update on all the capital and maintenance projects, programs and member amenities, safety precautions and protocols, Club financials, a membership update and information on our valued and dedicated employees.
While summer is winding down, let’s hope for an extended period of beautiful weather to enjoy the outdoors as long as possible. With new patio heaters, I personally hope we can continue well into the fall outside! So many of the traditions, rituals, and experiences we take for granted have been postponed or dramatically modified as a result of COVID. We hope to see as many of you as possible enjoying The Club. Thank you for your commitment to Michigan Shores Club. I wish you good health and well-being. Suzanne M. Eschel President

2020 MSC Games Stay Motivated & Compete Against Other Members What is it? There are 3 events to complete and you can retest any of them throughout the duration of “The Games” to keep improving your results. There will also be a live leaderboard displaying every participant’s score and points for each event (you can opt to remain incognito by using a display nickname). The leaderboard will help you gauge what you should try to retest in order to improve your standing. This is a great way to challenge yourself to remain physically active through uncertain times. Or you can also challenge your friends to see who does best! There are perks for all participants that register and a grand prize! All events will take place outdoors and the few equipment pieces used will be disinfected between participants.
When Event testing will take place Saturday and Sunday mornings at the MSC front lawn beginning September 12 and ending October 4. You must sign-up in advance for a time slot. Time slots start every 15-minute intervals and only 3 people are allowed per time slot. You can test 1, 2, or all 3 events. The first wave will be at 8 AM, last wave at 9:45 AM.
The Events 1. Two-Minute Push-up You will have 2 minutes to perform as many push-ups as you can. Resting between repetitions is allowed. The tester will provide you with detailed instructions on how to perform the exercise. Reps that do not meet the criteria will not be counted. 2. Two-Minute Sandbag Squat You will have 2 minutes to perform as many squats as you can while holding on to a 60 lb (men) or 30 lb (women) sandbag. Resting between repetitions is allowed by standing in place, but setting the sandbag down or resting it on any other body part is not allowed. The tester will provide you with detailed instructions on how to perform the exercise. Reps that do not meet the criteria will not be counted. 3. Timed One Mile Run You will follow a pre-planned route as fast as you can. No deviations from the route are allowed.

What if I can’t…?
Entree Fee
… do push-ups on the floor? There will be an option to perform them with hands elevated on a surface about 2 ft in height. However, any repetitions completed on the floor will be awarded higher placement in the leaderboard than any amount of hands-elevated repetitions.
All this for just an entree fee of $30! Registration closes September 11.
… squat the weight for a lot of repetitions? No problem! You don’t have to, just do 1 rep. And if you find you can do another… well, do one more. This is a test, not a workout. … run? If the impact of running is painful, you can always walk the 1 mile.
Groups There will be male and female categories. There will be 3 age groups as well: Under 30, 30-49, 50+. This means there will be 6 top participants!
Prizes & Perks All participants will receive 10% off a single package of personal training or group classes. All participants will also be entered into a raffle for some fitness center services, more details to follow. The top male and female from each age group will be entered into their own raffle for a Mini Theragun!
Just do your best! That’s what it’s all about. You’ll have a few weeks to train any weak links and retest as necessary. If you have more questions on the events and possible modifications due to injuries, email Rodrigo at rvelarde@ michiganshores.org
