The Sulfate Question W By Hope Farley

hy You Should Say No To Sulfate Shampoos

Do you or someone you know suffer from scalp irritation, alarming hair loss and other similar issues? Have you tried coloring your hair, spending hard-earned money only to see the color fade so fast? The cause could be sulfate, the component that is almost always present in many products not only in shampoos and conditioners. You could have been using it for the longest time, not knowing its ill effects.

But you might ask: If sulfate is supposed to take the grease out of your hair and help your shampoo lather like your hair is a piece of cloud when you use it, then there should be no issue, yes? Don't we experience a more squeaky clean hair after a bath using hair cleaners that bubble generously? A quick look at sulfate says that... In most commercially available shampoos and conditioners, sulfate is an ever-present content and that there are three kinds: ALS (ammonium laureth sulfate), SLES (sodium laureth sulfate), sodium myreth sulfate and the most common of all, SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate). SLS is inexpensive and works effectively in reducing water surface tension so that it sticks to dirt and grime making it easy to wash away from hair. However, the chemical components of sulfate strip away hair moisture and other essential hair oils that hair dries so fast and leaves the scalp vulnerable to irritations. 26 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - December 2014/January 2015

Hair Stylist | Cynthia Feller Salon | Volumes Salon Model | Nitza Elyse Photographer | Mr. Don Pittman/MrDonPhotos.com Make Up Artist | Nancy Anderson

Other disadvantages include... 1. Dry hair due to dissolved natural oils stripped away each time you shampoo. It is more evident if you have curly hair. 2. Irritated scalp that could lead to other conditions like eczema, severe dandruff, tightening and severe itchiness. 3. Dull color and brittle strands caused by the harsh and destructive cleaning with sulfate. 4. Corroded and damaged hair follicles that lead to hair loss. With continued use, the follicles will have a hard time recovering, unable to replace strands. 5. Negative effects that may not be limited to your hair and scalp and overall health but also to the environment as shown in some studies. The good news is... There are non-sulfate products that you

can use so that you don't expose your beautiful mane to the dangers of sulfate. Typically these are natural shampoos and conditioners that are mild to the hair and scalp. The benefits include: 1. Less damages because most non-sulfate hair products use natural ingredients like aloe or honey. 2. While they don't produce as much bubbles, they can also effectively clean. 3. They make the best choice for colortreated hair hence widely recommended and used by experts. 4. Sulfate-free shampoos are not known to inflict permanent damage to the scalp, hair, skin and the environment. That is doing your bit to a cleaner, greener planet. The final analysis is that... Sulfate, while very common in many products, does more bad than good when used as a shampoo ingredient. But

don't let that stop you from pampering your precious tresses whether it is curly, straight or mixed hair. Opt for products that can help restore hair moisture, shine and health. Often, the all-natural products work way better and they are guaranteed to be sulfate-free because healthy, natural hair is the primary concern of such manufacturers who truly know and understand hair. Feeling discouraged after trying one after the other to find the best hair care product that would reliably and dependably address individual hair needs of girls born of mixed heritage, Hope Farley did a methodical research about biracial hair. It paved the way for the creation of hair essentials that would help bring optimum results for all types of curls regardless of the heritage. N

ew Midwest Entertainment initially began in 2010 as a financial partnership between Phillipe Jones and Titonian Wallace Sr to help each of them fund their independent recording labels. This partnership brought about the gaining of several assets that each needed and shared. With time passing and the scope of the partnership growing Phillipe and Titonian agreed that it was best for all parties involved to dissolve their individual labels and began working together under one company. With that change also came a different aspect on how to go about doing business not just for themselves but for all others around that needed access to their knowledge and expertise. New Midwest Entertainment would no longer solely rely on the recording label for success, but would offer a wide range of goods and services that catered to all forms of business. New Midwest Entertainment L.L.C. (full corporation name) became a registered Limited Liability Company in the State of Kansas in 2013. www.lowkeezy.com www.facebook.com/reallowkeezy www.twitter.com/lowkeezy www.soundcloud.com/lowkeezy www.youtube.com/lowkeezy www.newmidwestent.com

Angela Yee started her career in the radio industry when she landed an internship with Wu-Tang Management after college. She later went on to work for Eminem’s clothing line, Shady Limited, and then switched over to Shade 45, which was Eminem’s radio station at Sirus Satellite Radio. After a successful run at The Morning After with Angela Yee, she began hosting The Breakfast Club on Power 105.1 alongside Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Envy. The show has gained listeners from all around the world. With tons of celebrity guests on their show, you can be sure that they will ask the tough questions that you are dying to know. Needless to say, there is never a dull moment, which is why they are one of the top morning shows in the nation. Although radio is her passion, Angela didn’t stop there. She has also done some TV correspondent work on MTV and VH1, and has also managed recording artist GZA and Jay Electronica. She also helped facilitate Jay’s deal with Roc Nation. Recently, Angela has become an #EchelonBeauty for Echelon Hair. Echelon is the premier hair company providing superior hair products directly from their place of origin. They are headquartered in New York and own their own factory located in south India. They sell only 100% virgin, Indian hair. They never sell synthetic, non-remy, silicone-applied, acid-washed or cuticle stripped hair products. I’ve been doing radio for 10 years now, and it’s really exciting especially because I’m from NYC and grew up listening to the radio here. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to do something I love every day, which is talk about current topics and interview people who I am a fan of. Every day I learn something new. What made you want to go into the music and radio industry? I’ve always loved music and ended up getting my first job out of college working with the legendary group Wu-Tang. I feel that if you’re passionate about something then you will excel at it. It’s not money that is the key to happiness, it’s finding your passion and making that your career. Who has been some of your favorite guest that you have worked with, and who would you love to work with in the future? 38 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - December 2014/January 2015

I always love Eminem, Jay-Z, and we recently interviewed Chris Rock who is my favorite comedian. And there are also artists who I appreciate for their music as well as their personalities, like Noreaga, Maino, Webbie, etc. Next we have to get Rihanna and Beyonce on the show. You have recently started working with Echelon Hair, what makes them different from other hair line companies? Echelon has exceptional products. I love their hair and it blends in well with my natural hair. I’m not the type of person who normally wears weaves but it has changed my view completely. Not only does it look real, it’s also easy to maintain and doesn’t get tangled. What are your favorite hair products that you like to use to achieve your amazing looks? I love Moroccan hair oil and Shea Moisture Hair Products like the coconut and hibiscus products. I also love the Shea Moisture hair masks. How do you usually wear your hair and how do you maintain your healthy tresses? I usually get a blowout or if I leave it naturally I will tame the curls with a wand. Any kind of braids are great too. And I always make sure I condition my hair and use a heat protectant. What is your beauty regimen? What skin and make up products are on your "Got to Have" list? I use Chanel foundation, and I like Nars Lip pencils. Shea Moisture makes great lip pencils too, and I can’t go anywhere without eyeliner. I usually use Nars black liquid liner. Describe your style. Comfortable. On a daily basis I love hoodies and jeans or sweaters with leggings. In the winter I love knee boots and in the summer I’m a fan of light flowy dresses. Do you have any beauty tips you like to share with our readers? Sleep is important, and so is under eye cream! And because I use makeup for on camera with Revolt TV daily I make sure I get facials and thoroughly was my face at night. I also use Dermalogica microfoliant daily and always moisturize.

ith her testimony, Lisa Gee hopes to inspire others to embrace their obstacles in an effort to walk their divinely authorized life. Always, the go-getter and lover of life, Lisa’s life seemingly came to a standstill, when she endured various medical challenges and accompanying domino-effect “knockdown punches”. From severe fibroids, a blood clot of unknown origin and in a rare location, and most recently infected ovarian cysts (also of unknown origin), Lisa has had her share of trying challenges. The aforementioned did not occur alone, as this single mom and business owner dealt with months of the disabling side-effects of warfarin (for the blood clot) and resulting financial challenges that resulted from her inability to work. Her new ‘normal’ forced her to face some realities and so with a determination that she says is generational, Lisa chose to fight.
