oral Gables Hospital Medical Executive Committee and Board is celebrating National Doctors’ Day by paying tribute to their physicians for their service, skill and compassion. The observance commemorates the nation’s doctors, who have dedicated themselves to service by helping to save lives and ensure the good health of US citizens. This year’s theme of, “Thank you for your extraordinary strength, courage and dedication,” is truly appropriate when we know that regardless of circumstance, the idea of being part of
a profession focused on helping people for many of our physicians was driven by value and faith in the family. of the day. March 30th also marks the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery by Dr. Crawford W. Long in 1842. National Doctors’ Day is commonly celebrated in healthcare organizations, as a day to recognize the contributions of doctors to individual lives and communities.

North Shore Medical Center Unveils New Tele-ER System
N
orth Shore Medical Center (NSMC) recently celebrated the launch of their new TeleER service offering with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Tele-ER at NSMC is dedicated to serving all patients in the community in need of medical assistance. This telehealth option is for patients who are unsure whether they need to seek emergency care in a hospital-based setting and allows anyone to speak directly to a physician and/ or nurse 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All that is needed is a smartphone, tablet or computer, with a camera. “It is important for our patients to know that we are here to care for their medical needs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” said Matthew K. Garner, CEO of North Shore Medical Center.

n la municipalidad de Miami Lakes se encuentra el Alcalde más joven y dinámico del Condado Miami Dade nos referimos a Manny Cid que con su ejecutoria gubernamental en su segundo termino de dicho cargo se ha ganado el respeto y admiración de sus constituyentes; preguntamos en esta entrevista cuales son algunos de los factores para tan exitosa carrera política y nos expresa el Alcalde Manny Cid: “Uno de los factores es la preparación y experiencia adquiridas como Jefe Legislativo de los Representantes Ralph Arza y Eddy Gonzales comenzando en el 2006 y posteriormente my elección a comisionado en Miami Lakes en el 2012 mi primera elección a Alcalde fue en el 2014 y actualmente mi segundo término electo sin oposición”. Obviamente para ser el Alcalde más joven del Condado Miami Dade cuenta con una vasta experiencia legislativa y administrativa que le dan una visión del sistema gubernamental a varios niveles, lo cual nos lleva a la próxima pregunta; Como se clasificaría usted en su forma de gobierno municipal? Nos responde el Alcalde Manny Cid: “Estableciendo las distribuciones de alimentos en varios puntos de
la municipalidad como usted puede ver concurren familias de clase media y profesionales que han sido afectados grandemente por la Pandemia en sus ingresos inclusive para el pago de sus hipotecas, siendo estas distribuciones de gran ayuda para ellos”. Entre sus proyectos ya aprobados y en vías de construcción se encuentra uno para personas de la tercera edad, Cual es su fase? Manny Cid nos responde: “Ya ha sido aprobado el primer Sénior Center, centro para personas mayores de Miami Lakes que incluirá facilidades de vivienda para personas de 55 anos y mas realizándose los preparativos para comenzar dicha construcción”. Otra de las áreas de interés del Alcalde Cid son los jóvenes, la educación y el desarrollo de las nuevas generaciones en Miami Lakes, por ese motivo fuimos invitados a la entrega y premiación en la reunión del consistorio de uno de sus mas jóvenes y prometedores atletas con “El Día de Jasmine Godínez”. Sr. Alcalde cual es el motivo de esta premiación. Nos responde: “Yo no acostumbro a dar premiaciones por motivos baladíes, pero en este caso esta alumna de la Escuela Superior de Hialeah- Miami Lakes, deportiva y académicamente se merece ser reconocida por la comunidad de Miami Lakes; con un alto promedio académico gano varios títulos en campeonatos de lucha regionales y distritales en los últimos cuatro años, incluyendo el Campeonato Estatal de Lucha de varones (GMAC Champ 2021), siendo la primera joven en Miami Dade County en calificar y obtener estos títulos.” Después de asistir a dicha ceremonia de premiación

n the municipality of Miami Lakes there is the youngest and most dynamic Mayor of Miami Dade County. We refer to Manny Cid who with his government performance in his second term in office has earned the respect and admiration of his constituents; We asked in this interview what are some of the factors for such a successful political career and Mayor Manny Cid tells us: “One of the factors is the preparation and experience acquired as Legislative Chief of Representatives Ralph Arza and Eddy Gonzales beginning in 2006 and subsequently my election to commissioner in Miami Lakes in 2012 my first mayoral election was in 2014 and currently my second unopposed elected term. “ Obviously for being the youngest Mayor of Miami Dade County he has vast legislative and administrative experience that gives him a vision of the governmental system at various levels, which brings us to the next question; ¿How would you classify yourself in your form of municipal government? The Mayor responds to us “As a reformer using technology to streamline the bureaucratic function and obtain positive results for our constituents” here the Mayor tells us about various situations and specific cases resolved with that model. Mr. Mayor in the area of economic and business development in the Municipality of Miami Lakes, what measures and assistance are you taking or have you taken in this emergency of the Pandemic? Mayor Manny Cid answers us: “By establishing
food distributions in various points of the municipality, as you can see, middle class families and professionals who have been greatly affected by the Pandemic in their income, including for the payment of their mortgages, are these distributions are of great help to them. “ Manny Cid responds Among its projects already approved is one for the elderly. Manny Cid responds: “The first Senior Center, a Miami Lakes senior center that will include housing facilities for people 55 and over, has already been approved, with preparations being made to begin said construction.” Another of Mayor Cid’s areas of interest are youth, education and the development of the new generations in Miami Lakes, for that reason we were invited to the delivery and award at the session of the council of one of its youngest and most promising athletes with “El Día de Jasmine Godínez”. Mr. Mayor, what is the reason for this award? He answers: “I do not usually give awards for trivial reasons, but in this case this student from the Hialeah-Miami Lakes High School, sports and academically deserves to be recognized by the Miami Lakes community; with a high academic average. Jasmine Godinez won several titles in regional and district wrestling championships in the last four years, including the Men’s State Wrestling Championship (GMAC Champ 2021), being the first young woman in Miami Dade County to qualify and obtain these titles. “ After attending said award ceremony by the

El almuerzo tuvo lugar en el Biltmore Hotel de la ciudad de Coral Gables en el cual cardiólogos de diferentes hospitales de nuestra comunidad participaron en un panel en el cual se proveyó información sobre cómo prevenir las enfermedades cardiacas. El doctor Joséph Lámelas, eminente cirujano cardiólogo de la Universidad de Miami, abrió el evento y seguidamente el panel

ow does it feel to be Vice Mayor again? It is my pleasure to serve as Vice Mayor for the fifth time for the City of Miami Beach since 2006. I truly love serving all of our residents of Miami Beach as I care passionately about making a difference. I am proud to be a trailblazer as the first openly gay Hispanic to hold office in Florida. Some of my past accomplishments include to name a few: founded the City’s Sustainability Committee; supported the City’s participation in the International Baccalaureate Program providing better eduction; and sponsored the City of Miami Beach partnership with the Anti-Defamation League’s “No Place for Hate” program in public schools. Most recently after my last election, I sponsored the lunch room at UNIDAD that provides food for almost 200 seniors daily. What measures and assistance are you taking or have you taken in this emergency of the pandemic? I am proud to state that I have taken the following measures to assist the residents of Miami Beach: 1) Repurposing Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Funds to provide rent relief to families 2) Sponsored the small business relief program 3) Sponsored fund allocation for food distribution programs and 4) Coordination of vaccine appointments to ensure seniors are being vaccinated. The rent relief program has allowed many of our low income residents to continue to reside in their homes during the pandemic. I have also been the voice of the Hispanic community during the pandemic appearing frequently on TV and radio to let our Hispanic community know what city programs are available.

How have you assisted our beloved seniors during the pandemic? Way before the pandemic, I established he first City of Miami Beach Senior Affairs Committee. The purpose of the Senior Affairs Committee is to provide senior citizen residents of the City with the opportunity to represent and articulate the needs of persons 55 years of age and older, to foster increased involvement in the affairs of City government by senior citizen residents, and to provide recommendations to the Mayor and City Commissioners on issues and programs affecting the City’s senior citizen population. During the pandemic, I have continued to care for our most vulnerable population by providing masks to our seniors, allocating funds for food distributions, and coordinating senior vaccine appointments. If you know someone that is 60 years and older and would like the vaccine, please have them call our office at (786) 441-7123. What can be done to address the safety issue in the Entertainment District? Since I returned as your Commissioner, I have been advocating for more police visibility and a zero tolerance in general. I am calling to enhance the police budget to put more officers on the streets and accelerate the installation of security cameras in our city. We will do all possible to keep City of Miami Beach safe. What are your thoughts on what to do with the Byron Carlyle Theatre? I am glad that I did not vote for this recent deal as I did not believe it was the Best deal for the City. I have placed a referral to the next Neighborhoods and Quality of Life Committee requesting
Lifesaving treatment saves Miami Shores man from Ischemic Stroke

was sitting at my desk working on balancing a checkbook when my wife came over to help me find a check and noticed I had slumped over in the chair. My wife noticed I was making a gasping noise, had a facial droop and quickly called 911. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue showed up at our home within a matter of minutes. Thanks to the first responders and my wife’s quick reaction time I was at North Shore Medical Center within 25-minutes of having the initial onset of an ischemic stroke.
At the hospital, I underwent a CT scan and they diagnosed me with a large vessel occlusion which occurs when there is a blockage in the blood vessel supplying blood to the brain. I had a 2 cm blood clot blocking blood flow to the right hemisphere of my brain. They made a quick decision to provide me with a stroke intervention to provide blood back to my brain. Dr. Sonal Mehta, an interventional neurologist and Medical Director of the Stroke Program at the hospital, used a small catheter he navigated from my femoral artery all the way up to my brain to retrieve and remove the blood clot from my body. Because North Shore Medical Center is a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center Dr. Mehta was able to quickly administer this lifesaving treatment. When I woke up from the procedure, Dr. Mehta and Jill Figueroa, an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) and Stroke Coordinator at North Shore Medical Center, we’re right by my side. I was able to communicate in a full conversation with Dr. Mehta and Jill. Following their instructions, I was able to lift my arms and legs. Dr. Mehta said he knew at that time I had a really good chance of doing well moving forward because my early improvement

They told me I was going to be okay which was reassuring to me because I knew in my mind something fairly serious had happened. Jill also called my wife to share the good news and my improved condition. To this day, I attribute my recovery to the skill of Dr. Mehta’s interventional neurology expertise and the dedication of his hospital team as well as the initial speed of emergency medical services (EMS) in getting me quickly to North Shore Medical Center’s Comprehensive Stroke Center. After I recovered from the removal of the large blood clot, I found out that 25 percent of the people who have this type of severe stroke end up dying. Of those who live 50 percent suffer some type of disability given the size of the clot and where it occurred in my brain. I had little if any residual effects from this stroke on my brain function. Everybody I know including my siblings regards
my recovery from this type of stroke as miraculous. They were happy to see I only suffered minimally from my stroke. My father had a very serious stroke when he was about my age and never really fully recovered. Today, I am back to exercising including lifting weights and doing sit-ups, walking and riding my bike. My cardiologist checked me out after the stroke and said I was in good shape. I am a member of the Miami-Dade Age-Friendly Initiative and have been able to get back to participating as a board-member of various health and community organizations. In addition, I am a volunteer for the Pelican Harbor Seabird Station and after my stroke was able to help rescue and provide rehabilitation to sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife. Thanks to Dr. Mehta and the care I received, I have returned to a normal quality of life.
