a ceremonia fue en el Departamento de la Policía de Coral Gables el jueves reconociendo a 12 miembros de la policía que fueron mucho más allá de sus deberes y enseñaron su profesionalismo y humanidad tratando a otro ser humano. En este caso fue al Dr. Denis Rod durante una emergencia médica que resultó complicada.

n Sunday September 5th, 2021; the Formula & Automobile Racing Association (FARA) held at the Homestead-Miami Speedway the Sunshine 300 car racing event. The event took place flawlessly as it opened its gates to the public at 9:30am. It was a lovely day to have held the event, due to the fact that the weather was nice, but not too hot, and the clouds were scattered away from the Speedway Arena. The entrance at Gate 18 was handled swiftly, professionally and in a very courteous manner by FARA personnel, letting in the public to have a first glance view of the multiple racing cars and racing categories that were going to be held that day. Within the many vehicles at the speedway, you could glance at Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes-Benz AMG, BMW, Honda, Chevy Corvette, Formula One Racing and others. l domingo 5 de septiembre de 2021; la Asociación de Carreras de Fórmula y Automóviles (FARA por sus siglas en inglés) celebró en el HomesteadMiami Speedway el evento de carreras de autos Sunshine 300. El evento se desarrolló a la perfección ya que abrió sus puertas al público a las 9:30 am. Ha sido un día precioso para celebrar el evento, debido al hecho de que el tiempo era agradable, pero no demasiado caluroso, y las nubes estaban dispersas lejos del Speedway Arena. La entrada en la Puerta 18 fue manejada de manera rápida, profesional y muy cortés por parte del personal de FARA, permitiendo al público tener una primera vista de los múltiples autos de carreras y categorías de carreras que se iban a llevar a cabo ese día. Dentro de los muchos vehículos en la pista de carreras, podría echar un vistazo a Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, MercedesBenz AMG, BMW, Honda, Chevy Corvette, Formula One Racing y otros. Successful surgeon sets standards with his practice in Doral, Florida

Alejandro Badia in an interview carried out in his office talks to us about current and diverse issues in his practice of hand and upper extremity surgery and his creation of the “OrthoNOW” concept made a reality in his Doral Clinic, revolutionizing medical practice in the United States. Among his academic and professional achievements, Dr. Badia has several degrees from prestigious universities in the United States and Europe that support his success, including Cornell University and New York University (NYU), where he obtained his bachelor’s degree. Doctor of Medicine and his respective training in orthopedic surgery, being at the same time chief resident of the Bellevue Hospital. He specialized in hand surgery in Pittsburg and in Europe. Dr. Badia in his role as executive and entrepreneur in the health area, what can you tell us? After a tour of the medical facilities of the clinic in Doral where we were accompanied by Dr. Badias showing us the various departments of his medical facility, giving us the respective functions of each one of them; operating room, recovery room, treatment room and physical therapy with the latest instruments and the most advanced state-of-the-art technology, we asked Dr. Badia: What are his goals for this magnificent institution? and about his created program of “OrthoNOW” Dr. Badia answers us: At the “OrthoNOW” our patients have direct access to digital X-rays, MRI, physical therapy, and the most advanced operating rooms at their disposal. The American Rescue Plan increases financial assistance and makes more people eligible for help

here have been several changes by the government recently that allow more people living in Florida to sign-up for affordable health insurance. President Biden recently signed a COVID-19 relief law (American Rescue Plan) that provides additional financial assistance and allows even more Floridians to get health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), sometimes referred to as Obamacare. The government also has reopened enrollment in the Federal Exchange until May 15, so Floridians can take advantage of the new financial assistance options that are available to them. And with the recent Temporary Protected Status (TPS) decree, thousands of Venezuelans currently living in the U.S. may also qualify for an ACA health plan with financial assistance due to their changed immigration status.

Highlights of these recent changes include: • If you are currently enrolled in an ACA plan, you may now be eligible for more financial assistance to lower your monthly bill or upgrade your plan for the same cost. The monthly cost will decrease roughly $50 per person and $85 per policy on average. • If you couldn’t get financial assistance (or a subsidy)

in the past because your income was too high, you may be able to now. More than 300,000 Floridians are now eligible for financial assistance who didn’t qualify previously. • Four out of five people who sign-up for an ACA plan can find one for a payment of $10 or less per month.

The Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce in-person monthly luncheon for September

he Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce has brought Washington to Miami Lakes as they hosted United States Representative Mario DiazBalart as guest speaker of their in-person monthly luncheon this September 8th. Representative Diaz-Balart is a Republican U.S. Representative for Florida’s 25th congressional district. Mr. Diaz-Balart was elected in 2002 and his current district includes much of Southwestern Miami-Dade County, including the city of Hialeah and much of the northern portion of the Everglades. Over 50 Chamber members and guests, consisting of various business owners across Miami Lakes and Town officials, were seated in the lavish Shula’s Hotel and Golf Club Grand Slam Ballroom. Aside from the regular networking opportunities and activities, Chamber members were given the chance to mingle with and directly question their acting representative in Congress. Representative Diaz-Balart used his speaking opportunity to update his Miami Lakes constituents on the continued efforts to earn the Town of Miami Lakes its own zip code. He stated, “I’m proud to continue my

work with Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid to advance our local transportation priorities and continue the fight for a unique ZIP Code for the Town of Miami Lakes.” Representative Diaz-Balart also passionately discussed Washington’s Federal budget discussions and passionately presented his viewpoint and optimism for the future of the United States of America to Chamber members. Following Mr. Diaz-Balart’s words, the Chamber recognized and awarded its newest members with printed Certificates of Membership. Similarly, Chamber Member and Public Relation Director of the American Legion Post 144, Pedro Fiallo, awarded Certificates of Appreciation to members who had supported local veterans through events, donations or otherwise. Members were served a full course meal provided by Shula’s Hotel and Golf Club and enjoyed pastries as dessert provided by local franchise Vicky Bakery. Subsequently, president of the Chamber, Fred Senra of Miami Lakes Automall, announced the return of the Town of Miami Lakes Business Networking Social hosted by the Town’s Economic Development Committee, the local chapter of BNI Excellence, and the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce, themselves! La experiencia y su preparación académica en varias disciplinas lo hacen la persona idónea para conducir esta institución académica en la comunidad de Hialeah. Graduado de la Universidad Internacional de la Florida (FIU), con un Bachillerato en Ciencias Políticas; posteriormente se gradúa con una Maestría en Administración Pública de la Universidad Estatal de la Florida (FSU) y un Doctorado en Educación de la Universidad Internacional de la Florida (FIU). Su exitosa y ascendente carrera profesional no es menos impresionante por su versatilidad para servir a una pujante y diversa comunidad como Hialeah y su joven población en esta década tecnológica y de grandes retos que lo capacitan para el susodicho liderazgo. Nos narra el Dr. Cruz en la entrevista: Comencé en la Universidad Internacional de la Florida (FIU) en la posición de Director Asistente de Admisiones y posteriormente pase a ocupar el cargo de Decano Asistente en la Escuela de Enfermería y Ciencias de la Salud en FIU (College of Nursing and Health Sciences) por cinco años. En los siguientes tres años los dedique al campo de las finanzas e inversiones con firmas nacionales como consultor de inversiones y finanzas hasta que decido regresar a mis raíces educativas, a FIU en la posición de Director de la Escuela de Educación Continuada y posteriormente de la Escuela de Política y Administración por cinco años más hasta ser contratado por el Broward College como

Decano Asociado de Asuntos de Estudiantes (Associate Dean Student Affairs.). Dr. Cruz. ¿Qué nos puede decir de su experiencia fuera del sistema de Educación Superior del Estado de la Florida? Nos responde el Presidente Dr. Cruz: Muy reconfortante el encontrar nuevos retos en mi carrera profesional como administrador y educador en otras Universidades de Estados Unidos en los subsiguientes años, como Decano de Asuntos de Estudiantes (Dean of Students Affairs) en Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Ohio; Vicepresidente en Sinclair Community College, Dayton, Ohio; y Vicecanciller de Asuntos de Estudiantes en St. Louis Community College y de nuevo de regreso a mis raíces como Presidente del Miami Dade College, Hialeah Campus para servir a esta magnifica comunidad y brindarle toda la experiencia adquirida en estos años. Dr. Cruz acerca de su procedencia que nos puede decir y qué fue lo que le motivó a tomar esta posición? Mi familia es oriunda de Cuba mis padres se conocen en Chicago donde estaban radicados y donde residí antes de pasar a Miami. Mi interés está enfocado en la Administración de Empresas y la tecnología, seguridad cibernética e internet; además del entrenamiento y

capacitación en programas de desarrollo empresarial y pequeños negocios (SBO’s) para la comunidad. Dr. Cruz. En su perspectiva como administrador y Presidente del MDC, Hialeah Campus, cómo ve Usted el crecimiento y funciones del College bajo su administración? En el área de enrolamiento de nuevos estudiantes hemos tenido un sustancial crecimiento, contando en estos momentos con 6,500 estudiantes lo cual es un récord que sigue en aumento, motivando a los más jóvenes con su nueva edificación, actividades extracurriculares y programas como el doble enrolamiento con las escuelas de enseñanza superior del área que servimos. En el ámbito de servicios a la comunidad, conferencias educativas y programas con organizaciones de base comunitaria como ferias de trabajo, con participación de agencias municipales, condales, estatales y federales, además de corporaciones tanto nacionales como locales; siendo la próxima una Feria del Trabajo para suplir empleos a los miembros de esta comunidad a realizarse en Octubre. Después de un recorrido por el campus al cual nos acompaña gentilmente el Dr. Cruz nos despedimos de nuestro anfitrión con la certeza que el MDC, Hialeah Campus, está en muy buenas manos bajo la égida de su Presidente el Dr. Anthony Cruz.

MDC Hialeah Campus President, an Educational Leader Focused on His Community

e are at Miami Dade College, Hialeah Campus where we interview one of the most dynamic and effective educational leaders in the community. We are talking about the Campus President, Dr. Anthony Cruz, Ed.D. His experience and academic background in several disciplines make him the ideal person to lead this academic institution in the Hialeah community. Dr. Cruz graduated from Florida International University (FIU) with a bachelor degree in political science. He later earned a master degree in public administration from Florida State University (FSU) and an Ed.D. in education from Florida International University (FIU). His successful and ascending professional career is impressive and his versatility make him the perfect leader to serve a thriving and diverse community like Hialeah and its young and diverse population in this decade of big challenges. Dr. Cruz tells us in the interview: I started at Florida International University (FIU) as Assistant Director of Admissions and later served as Assistant Dean in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at FIU for 5 years. I worked the following 3 years as an investment and finance consultant until I decided to go back to my educational roots, to FIU, and took the position of Director of Continuing Education and later in the School Policy and Management for 5 more years until I was hired by Broward College as Associate

Dean of Student Affairs. Dr. Cruz, what can you tell us about your experience outside of the Florida higher education system? President Cruz responds: It was very comforting to find new challenges in my professional career as an administrator and as an educator at other colleges in the United States, as Dean of Student Affairs at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Ohio, Vice-President of Student Affairs at Sinclair Community College, Dayton, Ohio, and Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs at St. Louis Community College and again back to my roots as President of the Miami Dade College, Hialeah Campus, to serve this wonderful community and offer them all the experience gained during these years. Dr. Cruz, what can you tell us about your background and what motivated you to accept this position? My family comes from Cuba and my parents met in Chicago where I lived until we moved to Miami. My interest is focused on business and technology, cyber security, the internet of things, and entrepreneurial

and small business training and development for the community. Dr. Cruz, from your perspective as an administrator and President of MDC Hialeah Campus, how do you see the growth and function of the College under your leadership? In the area of enrollment of new students, we have seen substantial growth. We now have the record number of 6,500 students, and this number continues to grow. We motivate young people with new facilities, extra-curricular activities and we serve dual enrollment students from high schools in the area. In terms of services to the community, we participate in educational conferences, community programs such as job fairs, and we collaborate with local, county, state and federal agencies and local and national corporations. Our next job fair to offer new employment opportunities to the community will take place in October. After Dr. Cruz kindly took us on a tour of the Campus, we said good-bye to our host and left the Hialeah confident that the Campus is in good hands under the leadership of President Anthony Cruz.
