The City of Hialeah Celebrates International Women’s Month through “Honoring the Woman: A Collective Art Exhibition by Women”

he City of Hialeah kicked off the grand opening of their “Honoring the Woman” collective art exhibition and night market on the evening of Friday, March 18th, 2022 at the Milander Center for Arts & Entertainment. The exhibition by women, celebrating women will be available to visit until Friday, April 22nd, 2022. With various styles of art being represented, cubism, pop-art, surrealism and more, “Honoring the Woman: A Collective Art Exhibition by Women” is a collection to visit! Artist Liz Nevado participated in the exhibition with a figurative self-portrait executed in the style of popart, utilizing techniques such as collage and acrylic painting. To her, the celebration of International Women’s Month is very important. Liz Nevado went on to share her joy in the progress that women have made in society, mentioning the various women with talent and drive. Launching during International Women’s Month, this exhibition was not only a celebration of women artists within the community, but the

acknowledgement of the struggles women face every day in society. The pieces touching base on various topics such as female-empowerment, the beauty industry, the societal pressures that women face, and the success of women – the City of Hialeah truly aided in the fostering of a larger conversation within our community. In conjunction, local Hialeah Artist Crystal Garcia states, “International Women’s Month is a great time to make people aware of the achievements of women”. This is nowhere near her last event of the season for her artwork will also be featured in Gone MIA’s “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow” exhibition at the Unbranded Brewing Co from April 22nd-24th, 2022. The show’s grand opening will be held on the 22nd from 7PM-11PM. (Instagram: @artist.crystalg). Also displaying work at the “Honoring the Woman” event was Artist MJ Pop, showcasing two pieces – both executed in the style of pop-art. MJ represented iconic symbols in her work one being a Wonder Woman-esque figure, as well as the very

well-known Marilyn Monroe. Through her art, MJ communicates “el futuro es femenino” (Spanish for: the future is feminine). As an epicenter of Latinx culture within Miami-Dade County, it is only fitting that they host such a pivotal event. Providing local women artists with a platform to showcase their work, the artists were able to relay the messages they feel are important surrounding the experiences of women. Artist Manena Elvira mentioned that the work she is displaying was created in honor of women. One of the pieces she was showcasing is titled “Tierra” (Spanish for: land or earth). The piece depicts a woman standing confidently with one foot planted on top of the earth, visibly conquering the world. After being asked about her piece, she goes on to highlight and uplift the 73 other artists displaying their work in the exhibition – urging everyone to visit and support the cause. “Honoring the Woman: A Collective Art Exhibition by Women” will be available to visit until Friday, April 22nd, 2022.

Los preparativos comenzaron a las 7:00 am, se hicieron cientos de bolsas y todo estaba listo para empezar a las 8:30 am. Desde las 9:00 am hasta las 12:00 pm, la fila de autos comenzó a recibir sus bolsas mediante el excelente servicio colocado por el Departamento de Policía de la Ciudad de Medley. Los conductores expresaron su gratitud y felicidad al recibir sus bolsas. Este tipo de evento demuestra a la comunidad que trabajando juntos podemos lograr grandes cosas.

Drivers expressed their gratitude and happiness as they received their bags. This type of event demonstrates to the community that by working together, we can achieve great things.

The South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce held its annual Hispanic Leadership Awards Luncheon

Alzheimer’s Disease and Hispanics

t seems like a true epidemic. Every day more and more people suffer from this disease, which for the last 100 years since it’s discovery, has been afflicting our beloved seniors in devastating ways. It was long ago that we learned that President Reagan suffered from this disease. Some think that it only affects people far away from us, however lately we are realizing it is closer than we think. It affects our neighbors with whom we’ve shared for many years who wander the hallways in our places of residence trying to remember where they live; It’s our friend’s parents who no longer recognize their children and welcome them with joy and affection, but instead with insults and inconsistencies. It is the sad and dramatic face of a terrible disease. In 1994, the Latino Center on Aging (LCA) organization sponsored its first gerontological conference in Chile, later sponsoring subsequent conferences on the topic in Mexico, Argentina, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico. Since then, we realized that the greatest interest of the participants lay in the

Latinos y el Mal de Alzheimer

Son nuestros vecinos de muchos años los que deambulan de piso en piso en nuestro lugar de residencia tratando de recordar donde viven; son los padres de nuestros amigos que ya no reciben a sus hijos con alegría y cariño, sino con insultos e incoherencias. Es la cara triste y dramática de una terrible enfermedad. En 1994, la organización Latino Center on Aging (LCA) auspicio la primera conferencia gerontológica en Chile, pasando por otras posteriores en México, Argentina, Costa Rica y Puerto Rico. Desde entonces, nos dimos cuenta de que el mayor interés de los

We all intuited that the longer people’s life expectancy was prolonged, the more likely it was that more people would suffer from this disease and not be prepared to deal with its consequences, both physical and emotional, and both to the patient and their loved ones. In the United States things are not so bright for Latinos either. Statistical projections tell us that there are just over 500,000 Hispanic people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease today and that this number will multiply 6 times over in the next 40 years, reaching 3 million. Efforts to help this segment of the population are very scarce. Especially when we see reports in the mainstream media suggesting that this disease would preferentially strike Hispanics one and a half times more than older whites. And how many of

them have or have had access to appropriate health services and resources? How many of your families are receiving the necessary advice and support to deal with this disease? Those of us who work in this field know that resources are scarce, which is why the efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association and other organizations, including the Latino Center on Aging (LCA), are very important and must be replicated, both by public and private organizations. iami Dade County Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava spoke Wednesday, March 9th, during the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce’s monthly membership luncheon hosted at the Miami Lakes Hotel to one of the biggest turnouts yet with over 80 guests in attendance! Attendees were eager to network, snap pictures, and hear from the mayor. Doctors, local store owners, accountants, and businesspeople from many differing industries were in attendance providing premiere opportunities for networking and building strong, local business relationships. In the foyer prior to the Mayor’s speech, guests conversed while enjoying delicious charcuterie provided by Chamber member, Creations in Bloom. Inside the ballroom, members and their guests were accommodated with full course lunch and coffee provided by the Miami Lakes Hotel. After giving each member ample time to introduce themselves, their businesses, and/or the services they offer to the over 80 attendees, President Senra enthusiastically introduced Mayor Levine Cava. Prior to arriving to the luncheon, Mayor Levine Cava participated in the Miami Dade County Bike to Work Day, along with Mayor Manny Cid, other local government officials, and a few chamber members. Mayor Levine Cava touched on the importance of community events, such as the Bike to Work Day and local organizations like the Chamber of Commerce, in bringing people together to make communities like Miami Lakes thrive. The Mayor expressed her passion for local chambers as she stated they are an integral part and a huge boon to

growing businesses seeking to build relationships in their communities. Consulting Group assists in Hialeah Chief of Police recruitment

hen the city of Hialeah began its search to hire a new police chief, they sought out someone who had prior on-the-job experience to help them. That person was Jorge Colina, former Chief of Police for the City of Miami. Colina became a policer officer in his 20s and, over a 27-year period, worked his way up through the ranks to chief of the department for three years, beginning in 2018, before retiring in 2021. “It wasn’t about wanting to leave,” explained Colina, about his decision to leave the force. “It was always more about having a finish line. I thought it was important to have a time frame in my mind where I would be pushed to complete the goals and tasks I had set out.” Colina admitted his biggest challenge during his time as chief was covid. “As you move up through the ranks, not only do you shoulder the weight of your officers’ safety,” said the former police executive, “but also the residents and visitors. If people feel unsafe, the city dies. It’s a big responsibility.” Under Colina, the department (1,800 total employees, including 1,400 police officers) experienced not one single loss of life. He credits early aggressive measures that resulted in a lower covid rate among his police officers than in the city. “Before mandates, we instituted outside rollcalls and the taking of temperatures,” he revealed. “If you were positive, you were sent home, if you had symptoms, you were sent home and your crew was sent home. We split the communication unit into two groups, socially distanced. And we used the same type of heat maps for crime detection for covid.”

Born in Weehawken, New Jersey, Colina relocated to South Florida with his family when he was threeyears-old and attended ascending levels of Hialeah schools, graduating from Hialeah High. Following his retirement, Colina wanted to “stay connected” with the community. He formed his own consulting firm (Jorge Colina Group LLC), along with partner Orlando Aguilera, who is a retired Deputy Chief of the Hialeah Police Dept and also a “Hialeah kid.” Together, the pair have nearly 70 years of law enforcement background. The process to find the right candidates for the Hialeah chief of police position was an extended and detailed one. “We met with the rank and file [thru a survey] to ask them what is important to you as police officer or civil employee,” Colina elaborated. “What qualities would you like to see in a police chief? What qualities you are looking for in a police chief at this moment in the department’s history?” During the more than three month-long process, which began shortly after new mayor Estebán Bovo was elected in November, Colina’s firm met with local elected officials, developed questions to pose to the high-level job seekers, and put together a recruitment brochure and video, specifying ideal qualifications as well as providing a background history of Hialeah. “The brochure and video speak to what the city is looking for, its departmental staffing and the compensation package,” Colina said. The recruitment brochure and video were sent out to the International Association of Chiefs of Police,

The Florida Chiefs of Police Association, Miami Dade County Chiefs of Police Association, Broward County Chiefs of Police Association and PERF, Police Executive Research Forum, a Washington DC-based think tank that “interacts with police executives across the country,” according to Colina. Proving that he is part of much more than a simple head-hunting firm, Colina informed: “Our executive searches specialize in assessment, depending on what the need is. We look at what you do and measure it against established best practices and make recommendations. We also offer help during the transition period, in this case, for the new chief.” A seven-person committee consisting of current or former chiefs of police of Bal Harbour, Miami Gardens, North Miami, president of the Hialeah City Council, the Hialeah Chamber of Commerce president, a respected Hialeah businessowner and a former Florida lieutenant governor then became involved in whittling down a total of 33 applicants to six semifinalists. From those six, three names were selected by the committee to present to Mayor Bovo. ialeah Mayor Estebán Bovo named George Fuente as the new chief of police at a morning press conference, March 28. “Today I formally announce George Fuente as the chief of Hialeah,” said Bovo from City Hall. “I’d like to thank God for His help to be here in front of you all today, and my family,” said Fuente, a married father of two children. “I’m honored and humbled. I’m eager and excited to continue to lead this great agency of fine men and women that protect our citizens on a daily basis. This is a great city. The support our officers receive from our citizens is amazing. We have a city in which elected officials, citizens and officers all work together for the common good.” Fuente, who had been the Interim Chief, began as a Hialeah police cadet at age 14. He became an officer at 19 and rose through the ranks. “I’ve been a sworn officer for 25 years,” he said proudly. “This is my city. This is my home, where my family lives. This is where my heart is at.” “He is now the permanent chief,” stressed the mayor, “and he has my full faith and confidence to do the things we need to do to make this the best department in South Florida. We had said from day one that we wanted to establish a process that was pure and clean. I did not put my finger on the scale. I wanted the [selection] committee to examine all the applicants. We are blessed to live in a city that supports law enforcement, and we saw it in the number of applicants that came from as far as Alaska, which speaks highly of our police department and

perhaps most about our community.” Bovo thanked the executive search firm, Jorge Colina Group, “whose role was not only to help facilitate and prepare our opportunity and get the message out to those who wanted to apply, but which more importantly, delivered an environmental scan of our police department.” The Colina report was expected to be available to the public within the same week of the press conference. “What’s important in the report are the issues it speaks to,” the mayor added, “which helped me make my decision. The report confirmed what I already suspected— that we have great men and women in our department that we need to invest in.” It was also announced that 40 cadets are scheduled to graduate from the police academy, which is expected to provide much needed reinforcement for the city at the officer level and offer an opportunity to boost enrollment into the detective units. The 43-year-old Fuente will now lead the police force of the second largest municipality

in Miami Dade County and the sixth in the state of Florida, and report directly to Mayor Bovo. “I want an agency that’s accountable from me on down,” said the new top cop. “An agency that’s part of the community, that engages with the community on a daily basis, interacting with everyone. Looking forward, I want the citizens of Hialeah to know that the officers who wear this uniform, to serve and protect, will do everything to keep them safe. Everything I do will be done with pride, honor and determination.”

ichael Bell, nombrado presidente del Florida Medical Center en Fort Lauderdale en septiembre pasado, comenzó su carrera en el cuidado de la salud de una manera poco probable. Nacido en Central Valley, California, el primer trabajo de Bell en el cuidado de la salud fue como capellán de un hospital. Obteniendo su Maestría en Divinidad y ordenado en la Iglesia Luterana, Bell comenzó su trabajo ministerial en un hospital de Bakersfield cuando tenía poco más de 20 años. “Fue una experiencia única sin tener la experiencia de la vida”, recordó Bell. “Visitaba a los pacientes todos los días. id you know that Social Security’s Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program provides cash payments to children with disabilities whose families have limited income and resources? A child must meet all of the following disability requirements to be considered medically eligible for SSI: • The child, if not blind, must not be working or earning more than $1,350 a month in 2022. If the child is blind, they must not be working or earning more than $2,260 in 2022. The earning amounts usually change every year to keep up with inflation. • The child must have a medical condition(s), that result in “marked and severe functional limitations.” This means that the condition(s) must very seriously limit the child’s activities. • The child’s condition(s) must last for at least a year or expected to result in death. Some older teenagers may have part-time jobs or

are involved in work programs, which may affect eligibility to SSI. In addition, if an unmarried child under age 18 is living at home, we may consider some of the parents’ income as the child’s income. We make allowances for the parents and their other children living in the home when we consider the parents’ income. ichael Bell, named president of Florida Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale last September, began his health care career in an unlikely manner. Born in Central Valley, California, Bell’s first job in health care was as a hospital chaplain. Obtaining his Master’s in Divinity degree and ordained in the Lutheran Church, Bell began his ministry work at a Bakersfield hospital in his late 20s. “It was a unique experience to have without having the life experience,” recalled Bell. “I visited patients every day. I also supporting the staff, such as when a patient died, I would be called to bring comfort and understanding to this very difficult process. What I learned from that experience was that people were not looking at me to provide comfort, they were looking at me to provide things that brought them comfort. It’s really about helping the family find their source of strength and not you having to be the source of strength.” Over the course of Bell’s career, medical science’s advancements have, more and more, converted previously expected tragic outcomes into triumphs. “You get the privilege of being with people during their loss,” explained Bell, 53, “but you also get the great privilege of being there in the moments when the miracles of what we do in health care change people lives. I’ll never forget the first time back in the 2000s when heart stents were introduced. Before stents, heart attacks in older men would cause a great amount of damage or were fatal. The first time I saw a cardiologist fix the blood clot on a type of vessel that I knew, in the past, was something that would place me with the family grieving the loss of their provider, their father – and then to see him walk out the next morning is exceptional.” Bell’s commitment to service was clear from his teenage years. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served his country as reconnaissance analyst in the Caribbean and then in the Gulf War, before pursuing his chaplaincy. The transition from hospital chaplain to hospital administrator occurred when the CEO of his California hospital one day asked Michael, who was also working in the hospital’s Information Technology Department, if he had ever thought

about a health career as an administrator. “He gave me some books on how to improve health care quality and safety,” remembered Michael. “That resonated with me. It was about process. Randy Rolfe, the CEO, eventually hired me as Director of Quality. I realized I had the opportunity to improve the system of care of patients. Taking data, understanding processes and trends, using the data to create action plans, and engaging with doctors and nurses to understand the data and

apply the data. I’m not a nurse or a doctor, but I work with nurses and doctors to help them look at the resources they have available on how they can improve their practices using data and their own resources to impact the lives of others.”

Before taking the helm at Florida Medical Center, Bell and his wife Doris relocated to South Florida in 2018 to become president of Hialeah Hospital, having worked for the hospital’s previous owners, Tenet Healthcare Corporation. (FMC and HH were two of five hospitals acquired by Steward Health Care from Tenet in 2021.) The cross-country move was facilitated by the couple’s “empty nester” status, following the independent transitions of their eldest daughter Christina Maria and son Peter. “I love it here,” stated Bell. “As in all my previous settings, I’m getting to know the community in Broward. Here there is wonderful diversity with the Haitian and Jamaican communities, living right around this very hospital.” Bell’s focus is on engagement. “I know how to build relationships and how to listen to the community,” the medical center president informed. “It’s about empathy, it’s about caring about the community I’m serving. What the community cares about, I care about. You have to be visible. You can’t take care of people without them knowing you, and you can’t meet their needs without being in a relationship.” For Bell, the reward is clearly entwined with his job. “It’s a gift, this role that we have.”

n March 16, 2022, COHEA, Career & Collegiate Academy, had the honor of having Governor Ron DeSantis hold a press conference at their Hialeah campus. He announced that the state of Florida will be allocating funds for after-school programs, to improve STEM education and boost reading interventions. “I am proud to announce an additional $289 million for programs that will improve student achievement and close learning gaps,” DeSantis said. The governor believes this will help bring Florida closer to becoming a powerful leader of education in the United States. Florida Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran stated that “Governor DeSantis continues to make the right call when it comes to working to provide a world-class education to our students.” DeSantis also approved a $2.9 million budget for the construction of a state-ofthe-art career academy building and gymnasium at COHEA, which would allow the school to accept more students who are currently on a waiting list. Seniors Enjoy a Community Health and Safety Fair at Hialeah Hospital

n Wednesday, March 23, 2022, Hialeah Hospital hosted a Health and Safety Fair for the community. About 50 local senior citizens were in attendance and partook in various educational safety sessions and fun-filled activities. The fair hosted complementary health screenings for peripheral vascular disease, blood pressure, and glucose levels. It also provided attendees with nutritional information and tips, medication counseling, and disposed of unused and expired medications. The City of Hialeah Fire and Rescue provided safety tips and recommendations for residents, such as leaving a magnet on their refrigerators with all known medical issues and medications. This simple act could prove to be lifesaving in an emergency and facilitates the jobs of Fire and Rescue personnel. The seniors also heard from Steward Health Care Systems’ Regional President for South Florida (including Hialeah Hospital), Marisela Marrero, M.D., and City of Hialeah Councilwoman Vivian Casáls-

Muñoz, who serves on the Hialeah Hospital Governing Board. The Director, Councilwoman, Chief Operating Officer Shirley Martell, and hospital staff spoke with and heard from seniors, listening to their comments and answering their questions. They asked for ways to improve and facilitate seniors’ healthcare needs and experiences while informing them of the many

improvements underway under the new management and ownership of Steward Healthcare Systems. The seniors ended their afternoon by enjoying a game of BINGO and dominoes, followed by lunch at Hialeah Hospital. Thanks to Steward Healthcare Systems, Councilwoman Vivian Casáls-Muñoz, and Hialeah Fire and Rescue, this successful event was made possible. ennis Martínez, the first Nicaraguan baseball player to reach the major leagues, was recognized by the City of Doral, February 28, in their council chambers. “It’s an honor to have someone whom I admired as a young fan here with us,” said Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez. “On behalf of the city and city council of Doral, and most important, its residents, we are proud to honor your career accomplishments as the first from your country to make it to the big leagues and on becoming one of the winningest Latin American pitchers in history.” Bermudez also reminded everyone in attendance that the former star hurler had “created the Dennis Martínez Foundation, which helps children living in poverty in Latin America,” and that “more recently your dedication to helping health care workers in Nicaragua by providing protective masks and gowns is a testament to your humanitarian spirit.” “I would like to thank everyone for this proclamation bestowed upon me,” said Martínez, who pitched for a remarkable 23 seasons [1976-1998] at baseball’s highest level. “This was an unexpected honor; I wasn’t expecting it. I’m very happy and very proud to receive this from you, especially with my wife and daughter here with me today, along with my future son-in-law, which makes it a gratifying family affair.” Martínez mentioned that his three sons were out of town, and unable to attend, but that he was “very proud of my children as a father and the foundation we have formed as a family, along with my wife.” “You can’t know how nervous I am in front of this smallish group of people, which is incredible considering I’ve pitched in front of forty and fifty thousand fans and haven’t felt the least bit anxious. The good thing is once I start talking, I can’t be stopped,” the pioneer pitcher added to the amusement of everyone. Martínez, who won the second most games [245] by a Hispanic pitcher in MLB history, also

pointed to a higher inspiration which has been a guiding force in his life: “There is the spiritual part [of me] which comes from God, it’s what will sustain us in our effort to maintain the welfare of humanity. Those of us, who are on the side of good, will succeed. We have to stay on that path, especially now with what is going on in Ukraine.” The event, which is part of series of recent baseball-themed, individual recognitions hosted by the city, was promoted by Jorge Maduro and the Cuban Sugar Kings Foundation. (Past honorees have been Miguel Cabrera and Cookie Rojas.) In addition to the mayor, all four City of Doral council members, Digna Cabral, Claudia Mariaca, Pete Cabrera and Oscar Puig-Corve, were present. Before handing over the special honorary certificate to Martínez, Bermudez stated: “Throughout your career you have been a champion for democracy in Nicaragua. We know you represent for many Nicaraguans a symbol of freedom for a future democratic and sovereign Nicaragua, and not what is taking place there today. This year at the United States Conference of Mayors, I brought a resolution supporting the opposition in Nicaragua and in exile. I know the story of Nicaragua is unfinished.” Fit and trim and appearing as if he could still pitch today, the distinguished and youthful-looking Martínez accepted the social responsibility of his community stature: “I have to raise my voice as a public figure when I see what’s taking place in my home country, because what’s going on there is not right. The Nicaraguan people supported me for my entire career. It was particularly hard for them during the first four years of my career [1976-1979], during the civil war occurring in my homeland. I’m not going to forsake them now. I have to support the change my countrymen are currently seeking. And we hope to obtain that change for which we are all yearning.” Martínez affably closed by saying that he “would love to comeback to spend time in a more relaxed setting to talk baseball over a nice cafecito.”

Representative Rizo commented, “Being a hometown product of Hialeah, I look forward to continue serving the people of Florida, alongside the best Governor in the U.S.A., and especially look forward to working for my new constituents in Hialeah, Miami Springs, Virginia Gardens, and Miami for many years to come.” Also, resulting from redistricting and Representative Rizo’s decision, State Representative David Borrero, a Republican elected in 2020, declared, “I have filed to run in newly created District 111, representing Hialeah Gardens, and portions of western Hialeah, Doral, and areas of unincorporated Miami-Dade that were in my former seat. Floridians may count on me to continue implementing our conservative values in the Florida House.” Another result of Representative Rizo’s decision, Hialeah City Councilwoman Vivian Casals-Muñoz will forgo her candidacy for State Representative and instead file for election in her current Council Seat 4 during the upcoming 2022 Special Election. Also following Representative Rizo’s decision, State Representative Tom Fabricio, a Republican incumbent who currently resides in Miramar, Broward County, will file in House District 110, which consists of Miami Lakes, and parts of Hialeah and unincorporated Miami-Dade County. Hialeah Mayor Esteban Bovo, Jr. stated, “The City of Hialeah’s residents benefit by having three experienced State Representatives continue serving us in the Legislature, and Councilwoman Casals-Muñoz’s institutional knowledge and experience in our City Council. All four have my full support and endorsement in the 2022 elections.”

e lived a lifetime behind the microphone, “with a voice as strong as café cubano and as sweet as tres leches cake,” described sportswriter Mike Phillips of the Miami Herald. Rafael “Felo” Ramírez spent 72 years as a sports broadcaster. Though he was also ringside announcer for many high-profile boxing matches, including pugilistic cards involving Muhammed Ali, the majority of those seven-plus decades were spent faithfully dedicated to his lifelong passion of baseball. Rafael Ramírez Árias came into the world June 22, 1923 in Bayamo, Oriente, Cuba. He was the eldest of five children and only boy born to

Rafael Ramírez Ricardo and Rosa Árias Bárzaga. His sisters Carmen Luisa, Ángela, Rosa de la Concepción and Urania would complete the family over the next seven years. “He redefined the category of sports narrator with a very simple recipe: inimitable style, deep voice, charisma, improvisation and a very friendly and pleasant manner,” wrote Omar Claro, author of “Felo Ramírez el oráculo de la narración.” “I would describe my style as very peculiar,” Ramírez would say well into his career, “very much my own, very spontaneous. I’ve had some famous lines, but they just came out of my mouth.” (A particularly tense contest Felo would label as “un choque no apto para cardíacos,” “a clash not for those with heart conditions.” Or in a variation, “Si tiene problemas cardíacos, aléjese de la radio.” “If you have heart problems, back away from the radio.”) According to biographer Claro, Ramírez first began projecting his voice as a 16-year-old in his hometown. From moving automobiles, he would announce, through a borrowed megaphone, the motion pictures showing at the local theatre, as well as advertising

specials from the town’s merchants. He was compensated with dress pants and guayaberas from one of the clothing stores. Shortly thereafter, the teenager obtained his first baseball broadcast gig. On weekends, he described the action to fans in the stands at the local baseball field as play occurred. From 1939 to 1945, Ramírez estimates that he called nearly 500 contests and logged about 1,000 hours toward his burgeoning vocation. One of Felo’s interim “day jobs” was as spokesperson for Bayamo’s aspiring mayoral candidate. The postulant won the election in 1944, and encouraged Felo to broaden his horizons. A year later, Felo Ramírez took his first steps on the path to broadcasting immortality when he decided to venture (with three other friends) to the Cuban capital, almost 500 miles away. Upon his Havana arrival, he applied for a job at a radio station which happened to be in desperate need for a broadcast voice for the upcoming Cuban Amateur League. The 22-year-old Ramírez impressed the station managers not so much with his voice but with his knowledge of the players and teams. Ramírez won the job at Radio Salas in Havana, broadcasting amateur baseball, an immensely popular sport on the island in the 1940s. “My career started in 1945 at Estadio Tropical de la Habana,” Felo stated, “in the 18-team amateur summer league.” Following his inaugural broadcast job with the Cuban Amateur League, Felo Ramírez stayed on to broadcast the 1945-46 Cuban Winter League. He was teamed with established announcer Manolo de la Reguera. The pair became the most listened to sports duo in the country, and kicked off a professional and personal relationship lasting more than four decades. The rookie announcer was named Broadcaster of the Year by the Association of Broadcast Journalists.

Baked “Fried” Fish

Friday fish fry, anyone? Try this healthier take on an old favorite to kick off your next weekend. Number of Servings: 6 INGREDIENTS: • olive oil spray • 1 lb. white fish fillets, such as tilapia or Dover sole • 2 eggs, beaten • ½ cup cornmeal • ½ cup breadcrumbs, preferably whole grain • 2 teaspoons onion powder • 2 teaspoons garlic powder • 2 teaspoons paprika • 2 teaspoons black pepper • ½ teaspoon sea salt • ¼ teaspoon chili powder DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or a silicone baking mat. Place a metal rack on top of the sheet. In a large bowl, stir together cornmeal, breadcrumbs, and all spices. Dip a filet in crumb mixture. Then dip in egg wash. Then dip in crumb mixture again. Spray with olive oil spray, then place on rack. Repeat with all filets. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. This simple crumble brings together apples, cranberries and flaxseeds, which are great sources of antioxidants to help lower the risk of diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Number of Servings: 8 INGREDIENTS: • 4 medium-sized baking apples, cored, sliced thin, skins on • 2 tbsp lemon juice • 1 tsp cinnamon • 1 tsp vanilla extract • ¼ cup dried cranberries • Vegetable spray • ½ cup rolled oats • ¼ cup ground flaxseeds • 3 tbsp honey • 2 tbsp coconut oil or unsalted butter DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, stir apples with lemon juice, then add cinnamon, vanilla, and cranberries. Spray glass or ceramic pie pan with vegetable spray. Pour in apple mixture. In a food processor fitted with a standard cutting blade, add oats, flaxseeds, honey, and coconut oil or butter. Pulse for 30 seconds or until well combined. Sprinkle oat mixture on top. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until lightly browned on top and apples are soft, with juice bubbling up. Let cool for five minutes, then serve alone or with nonfat Greek yogurt.
