DURANA Tirane-Durres, Albania Master Thesis at Politecnico di Milano “DURANA: New Public Typologies for Integration and Sustainable Development of New and Old Urban Landscapes of the National Linear Region” Thesis Advisor Prof. Isabella Inti
Albania has undergone major informal urban transformations for more than 20 years since the swift of the political system at the verge of 1990s. Such transformation have been evident especially in the region between the capital, Tirana, and the port city of Durres. Only recently, the importance and the focus on the urban studies and planning has arisen nationally. This thesis explores the background of the linear region of Durana, analyzes the character of the region based on the taxonomy of the open spaces, public spaces, urban morphology and building typologies, creates a new vision for Durana and implements it through one pilot project in a significant site along the linear region. The objective of the project is to design for a polycentric Durana and the transformation of the informal linear region into a formal solid entity for future sustainable development.

DURANA HIGHWAY
SECONDARY ROAD
EXISTING SETTLEMENTS: GJOKAJ
1
Sewing the intersection through interventions in the open space through public space design, linking the detached linear infrastructural elements.
LINEAR URBAN SYSTEM
0
Existing situation of the fragmented territory with strong linearity along the highway and weak transversial connection between the sides.
2
The building of the train station and the market is located transversally to the linear infrastructure, emphasizing the sewing operation of the project.
3
The building goes after the topography of the site, crawling up the hill. It is a permeable building, concepted as a cover to the functions of the railway station and the local market.

The project is realized during the Ghost Town Laboratory, after a research of the reasons of abandonments of the Calabrian villages and towns, together with an evaluation of the weak and strong points of the area. Focused on argriculture and forestry, we investigate and design a sustainable and participatory strategy for recovering, maintaining and enhancing the agricultural landscape and economy. We propose an external cooperation between 52 ghost Ionian coast ghost town in Calabria. Thus, ‘Njonica Agri-Forestal Distric is created to achieve our aim.

ALGEBRA PAVILION EXPO DUBAI 2020
Algebra is a monumental space where people, from any culture, would find a common denominator to connect and communicate with each other. The heterogeneity of culture is heritage. What if two people get to understand each-other no matter what language they speak? Would this imply new opportunities? How can we uncover our belief for better connecting?
SKIN For the Algebra Pavilion, the sand is the main material of the interior and exterior skin. Despite Rub’ Al Khal sand desert is the main feature of UAE’s geology and it covers 80% of total area of UAE, UAE imported $456m worth of sand, stone and gravel for constructions because wind-formed sand is too smooth for construction. The skin is composed by sand panels, which have all different dimensions in order to create the actual effect of the facade. Thus the production of the sand panels comes using a binder jetting 3d-printing process using desert sand and a biodegradable polymeric binder. longitudinal section

STEEL STRUCTURE
The structure followes the shape of the pavilion itself. There are two collaborative structures corrisponding to the interior and exterior walls, which are connected only at the top ring. The customized casted steel joints connect beams which come by different directions. The flanges connect the joints to the beames. molded steel joints

sand panels are slided into the tracks starting from the bottom going to the top of the structure; the panel is brought to the corrispondant place by crane, while workers slide the the panels in the final position.

HOUSE OF REFLECTIONS Workshop July ‘15: Living Venice Vignole Island, Venice, Italy Group academic project Giacomo Salvati, Larisa Kulagina, Mikaela Maçka, Stefano Busetto Prof. Manuel Aires Mateus m@airesmateus.com Assistant Luz Jimenez
water reflections in Venice
Weeki Wachee spring, Toni Frissell, 1947
The purpose of this proposal is to reflect on architecture: ‘’thinking on our personal experience, on the definition of identity, on the materiality of a collective and personal coexistence; reflecting about architecture as a definition of memory, about architecture as a possibility of intervention, about architecture as an opportunity to transformation; to create in one place a full proposal.’’ The main inspiration was the water of Venice and its reflections on
Marietas Island, Mexico
the facades, on the bridges, on the water itself. Venice seems like floating on the lagoon, an everyday image of those who live, study or work there. We thought of a beautiful photo of 1947, Weeki Wachee spring of Toni Frissell. The main idea was to design a house which would be partially emerged in the water, white and delicate, a big space full of reflections looking towards historic Venice.

phases of the realization of the architectural model
Architectural Conceptual Model It was initially created the negative of the big ‘floating’ roof in polystyrene. Once glued the level sets they were sculpted with knife until the negative was perfectly smooth. Successively the technique of Venetian masks was used, using strips made out of special absorbent paper called “cartalana” or newspapers. The strips were completely covered in a mix of glue and water and then were pressed firmly onto the mold to make them stick. After twenty layers it was dry. The next step was finishing and smoothing the surface by coating several layers of plaster with plastic gloves. The result was a very delicate roof transmitting our main idea of the project.

‘Qazim Turdiu’ is a primary & secondary school, hosting about 900 pupils. The school offers very unique public and community spaces. The relationship between the indoor and outdoor spaces is particular thanks to the corridors adjacent to the balconies, facing the school courtyard. The object consists of 3 separate volumes (function-wise): the classrooms; the gym; the library & auditorium, providing a more independent access from the main street to the community spaces after school hours.

The main volume is divided into 2 smaller 4-storey objects positioned near the perimeter of the parcel, hosting the classrooms. They are linked by a 3-storey volume, containing spaces such as laboratories. The central volume hosts the administrative rooms as well, facilitating students’ supervision. Its ground floor is a colonnade which connects the 2 entrances of the school. All the separate volumes are connected by balconies that serve as public spaces. In addition to the balconies, the front yard and the third floor terrace are meant for gathering and recreation, while the back yard is dedicated to more specific activities (playground for the preschoolers and sports).

This interior is dedicated to the second shop of Haburger, hamburger brand based in Tirana. The plan layout is particular because of the narrow shape. This characteristic is rather seen as a strong point when combined with the geometry of the arches. The usage of the oak wood, combined with the red ceiling and visible ducts and lighting fixtures, gives a retro atmosphere to the place. Each arch stands like a stage, dedicated to seating and enjoying the food. Light and shadows emphasize beautifully each stage. The kitchen is placed at the end of the plan, partially visible as a glass box at the end of the vision trajectory. The whole interior manifests as a temple of the product served at the shop.

Apartment H is a comfortable and spacious living space for two people in the capital of Albania, Tirana. The apartment is conceived as an open space, with living, cooking, wardrobe and sleeping spaces half-open to each other, with the possibility of closure thanks to the movable panels. Only the perimeter of the apartment stays fixed, while its interior is built as furniture with openings and closings, allowing clean, uniform and minimal wall pages. Almost all surfaces have light and calm colors, while the black ceiling contrasts the rest of the interior, increasing the framing of spacious spaces and making them warmer and more intimate.

The itineraries of movement inside the apartment are numerous. Viewing angles are rich. Thurje Handmade is a brand of Albanian handicraft products. Thurje Handmade [alb. thurje – en. weaving] revivals handcrafts, offering a collection of renovated handmade weaved products. The innovation of Thurje Handmade stands on the networking of skilled Albanian artisans and the new generation of designers, introducing a renewed vision for made-in-Albania products. Handcrafts have been a very important part of the lifestyle of Albanians, especially women. The culture of handicrafts has almost disappeared with the modernization of our lifestyle, but Thurje Handmade rediscovers traditional ways of doing, conserving the same quality and offering refreshed products, designed to fit into the most curated and sophisticated contemporary interiors.
