KCSM

ABOUT US Simply put, KCSM Jazz 91.1 is one of the world’s most significant jazz institutions. A 24/7 public radio station with an all-jazz format, KCSM is based in San Mateo, California, but heard throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. We reach over 200,000 listeners per week over the air and stream our programs worldwide via kcsm.org. Our vision is to be the first choice in jazz radio. With over 40 years of broadcast experience, the Jazz 91 team drills deeply into each and every facet of jazz, creating unique programs unavailable elsewhere. We have an extensive library of over 200,000 recordings, the world’s third-largest jazz collection. KCSM airs more than 35,000 songs each year, giving listeners broad exposure to the great jazz musicians of past, present and future. Jazz is universally recognized as “America’s classical music” — an indigenous cultural gift that influences musicians in all genres and thrills fans worldwide. While jazz’s roots exist in several American cities, the Bay Area has emerged as the leading modern home of jazz in the western U.S., incubating world-class talent. KCSM is an integral element of the northern California jazz ecosystem, along with the Monterey Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ Center, Stanford Jazz Workshop, California Jazz Conservatory, San Jose Jazz Festival, Yoshi’s and others. Unlike much of today’s radio, which is pre-programmed using computer algorithms, KCSM offers a real community service presented each day by live announcers. At Jazz 91, we take an approach to programming that is as improvisational as jazz itself. Every show reflects the host’s personal relationship with the music. As a result, KCSM exposes listeners to entirely different aspects of jazz from hour to hour. Our on-air talent has the freedom to create their own playlists, with a broad palette of classic and contemporary cuts, and share their knowledge of this vital art form. Each announcer pushes the envelope, creating a dynamic station that offers fresh sounds throughout the day and week. We see this eclectic heart as a true reflection of our jazz heritage.
