SALSA & LATIN JAZZ

JAZZ BEYOND

Attention salsa dancers and salseros! There will be no outdoor Salsa Stage on Friday night. Instead, the Latin music will start at the SJZ Boom Box Stage, on S. First near San Salvador. Both these shows are FREE as part of the South FIRST FRIDAYS celebration:

The Jazz Beyond Stage (between E. San Salvador and E. William) will be a centerpiece of South FIRST FRIDAYS, with two very hot bands:

7:00 Jesus Diaz presents Rumba Cubana — An authentic Cuban rumba created just for us. 8:00 Sonex — A set of Son Jarocho with a modern twist, direct from Mexico City. The action continues Friday 9pm at the Miami Beach Club (417 S. First), where we present New York-based Doug Beavers’ Titanes del Trombón in their west coast CD release party. Latin legends are in this hard-driving dance band! On Saturday and Sunday, make sure to visit the Salsa Stage on W. San Fernando, which will be set up as in years past.

7:00 Will Sessions — A super high-energy, jazz-funk group from Detroit. Do not miss! 9:00 The Internet — Their new release Ego Death is already in the running for R&B Album of the Year. On Saturday at 10:30pm, the Jazz Beyond Stage moves to The Continental Lounge (349 S. First) and features Ali Shaheed Muhammad from A Tribe Called Quest. Known worldwide, Ali will perform an intimate DJ set to be talked about for years. Finally, on the California Theatre Stage on Sunday at 7pm is Kamasi Washington & the West Coast Get Down, standing squarely at the intersection of jazz and hip hop. There will also be a variety of DJ sets on the Jazz Beyond Stage featuring Quantum, Chatos1013 and The CME. Jazz Beyond programming is curated and co-presented by Universal Grammar.

SJZ BOOM BOX STAGE We’ve taken the mobile music platform to a whole new level; the SJZ Boom Box Stage is a retrofitted truck in the shape of those ‘70s music players we all still love. Keep an eye out for this roaming venue! As part of South FIRST FRIDAYS it camps out on S. First, near the Miami Beach Club, for two VERY hot Latin music shows on Friday night. Then, you’ll find it in the back of Plaza de César Chávez on Saturday and Sunday.
