Introduction Winter highlights! As winter approaches, we go indoors to do our work. It’s a great time to prepare, study and fine-tune our musical endeavors. On January 25, composer, pianist, singer and Berklee College of Music professor Peter Eldridge will perform in concert, followed the next day with a masterclass. After his workshop students can stay on for our monthly Vocal Jam Session, hosted by Angharad Jones. Former Bay Area resident Diane Witherspoon will perform as well as present a workshop drawn on her experience as an international jazz singer. A pioneering professor of vocal jazz mentored by David Baker, Dr. Jeri Brown makes her Jazzschool debut with a concert and workshop. On March 23, Ed Reed returns for a workshop on how to get Inside the Lyrics. At 85 years old, he certainly knows how to do this! We are also thrilled to welcome Kenneth Helman to the vocal program. Having worked as Sting’s vocal coach, he’s now teaching private lessons at the Jazzschool Institute and begins his first quarter in our community music school with a “Glee-style” course for teens, focused on Broadway in all its forms. This will start a new branch of study in the Jazzschool Young Musicians Program. Our Latin curriculum is vibrant with courses on Latin Standards, Salsa Singing and Bossa Nova for Jazz Singers. The R&B wing of the department is rockin’ with Raz Kennedy at the helm, while Pamela Rose continues to lay down the blues with a new course on Willie Dixon. Maye Cavallaro continues her popular composer series and elder stateswoman Faith Winthrop continues her course For the Love of Singing. All performance classes include a show at the end of the quarter that’s open to the public. Beginners and professionals alike will benefit from the range we offer, from Beginning Jazz Singing with Ellen Johnson to The Contemporary Jazz Singer taught by yours truly. Please review the course and workshop descriptions (most are open to all) and contact me with questions at laurie@jazzschool.org.

Introduction More big news! It’s been a great experience so far, directing the Jazzschool Young Musicians Program! Hearing all of the talented and hard-working young musicians who make up the ensembles and the Studio Band is inspiring, and I will continue to try to make our program as strong as can be. I’ll do this by providing as many playing and performing opportunities as possible, and by finding the very best faculty to work with our young students. We have new faculty in the youth program, starting with the director of the Jazzschool Studio Band — the distinguished professor emeritus of jazz studies at Cal State East Bay, Dave Eshelman. Dave is not only an inspiring teacher but an incredible trombonist and one of the world’s foremost big band composers and arrangers. I’m thrilled that he’s stepped in to fill the considerable gap that outgoing director and Studio Band founder Keith Johnson had left. We also welcome renowned vocalist Kenneth Helman, who leads a new “Glee-style” course for teens who want to sing musical theater. I’m happy to announce that three new combo coaches will work with our high school musicians: Eddie Mendenhall, Sista Kee and Colin Hogan. All of these pianists and educators have experience playing professionally at the highest level, and each is a dedicated and accomplished teacher who will bring their unique approach to the ensembles they coach. The five new faculty join our other world-class jazz teachers — Dr. Michael Zilber with the award-winning Advanced High School Jazz Workshop I;  Rob Ewing and Kasey Knudsen, teaching both middle school and high school ensembles;  Joe Bagale, directing the High School Funk Ensemble;  Kyra Gordon, who leads Pop and R&B Vocal Performance for Teens; and myself teaching the Advanced High School Jazz Workshop II and high school combos. If you’re a young musician interested in taking your skills to the next level, please contact me and let’s find a place for you here at the Jazzschool. Looking forward to making music together!

MELODIC MASTERY with Dmitri Matheny Based on the teachings of his mentor and jazz icon Art Farmer, trumpeter Dmitri Matheny presents a lyrical, melodic approach to jazz improvisation. He explores the mental processes that take place while playing a jazz solo and the skills required for true improvisation. With an emphasis on deep listening and jazz-as-conversation, the workshop outlines the elements of music from the soloist’s perspective (melody, harmony, rhythm, tone, timbre and form), and why the melody should be your guide when improvising. Matheny explains how to spontaneously create your own melodies and develop them in real time through a series of simple or complex harmonic changes. He provides recorded examples, demonstrates specific techniques on his horn, and shares relevant anecdotes, while discussing the importance of your own personal sound. For all improvisers. Sunday, March 2, 2 – 4pm $30 advance • $45 day of workshop Recognized for his warm tone, soaring lyricism and masterful technique, Dmitri Matheny has been hailed as “the first breakthrough flugelhornist since Chuck Mangione” (San Jose Mercury News). Emerging in the 1990s as a protégé of Art Farmer, Matheny has matured into “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players” (SF Chronicle), touring internationally and releasing nine critically acclaimed albums. He is an honors graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy and the Berklee College of Music.

PRE-BIRD: SWING FEELING THEN AND NOW with Michael Steinman This workshop offers an informal guided tour of the jazz scene — audio and video — that so richly blossomed before World War II. It isn’t an immersion in what younger jazz players “should” know from some ideological stance, but a way of offering experiences that players and singers might not discover on their own. A tenor player might find something in Dick Wilson, Herschel Evans or Cecil Scott; a singer might be astonished by Connee Boswell or George Thomas; a drummer might find revelation in the work of Sid Catlett. The workshop isn’t “jazz archaeology” — it will end with a visit to the last five years, with evidence that these “older styles” work very well in tandem with ideas one may have gleaned from Wayne Shorter or Betty Carter. All are welcome! Sunday, March 9, 2 – 4pm $30 advance • $45 day of workshop See instructor bio on page 52.

DEVELOPING YOUR BALLAD SKILLS with Anton Schwartz The slow songs of the jazz repertoire may be less technically demanding than their faster counterparts, but they require special skills and arguably greater artistry to play well. In this workshop we tackle those skills head on, focusing on phrasing and feel, and outline practical avenues for improving your mastery of this form. We also explore rubato, cadenzas and double-time feel and other relevant topics as time allows. Prerequisites: facility on a melodic instrument or vocals, improvisational experience and knowledge of basic jazz harmony. Bringing your instrument is recommended. Sunday, March 23, 11am – 1:30pm $40 advance • $55 day of workshop See instructor bio on page 50.

THE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ SINGER with Diane Witherspoon Whether you work in your hometown or in faraway places, a singer must have a diverse repertoire, know how to put together a show, know what to wear and how to create a personal book of songs that will “translate” no matter what country they’re in. Understanding the audience, using proper microphone technique and leading the band are also key components of being well prepared. Students will hear a brief lecture and then will have the opportunity to sing with an accompanist, for critique and input from Diane Witherspoon. Please ensure the song is memorized and bring three copies of the sheet music. Sunday, February 9, Noon – 3pm $50 advance • $65 day of workshop

Open to singers and instrumentalists of all levels. Sunday, February 23, Noon – 3pm $50 advance • $65 day of workshop Singer and educator Ellen Johnson has performed, recorded and studied with artists including Louie Bellson, Bobby McFerrin, Sheila Jordan, John Clayton, Don Braden and Roy McCurdy. INSIDE THE LYRICS with Ed Reed Master jazz vocalist Ed Reed guides students through the art of interpreting a lyric. Topics include pronunciation, breathing and phrasing as suggested by the nature of the lyric, as well as methods of communicating the story of the lyric to highlight emotion, nuance and irony. An inspiration to all he meets, Ed Reed leaves an indelible impression. Students of all levels are welcome and each should be prepared to sing a song of their choice, with a professional accompanist. Sunday, March 23, Noon – 3pm $50 advance • $65 day of workshop

While Ed Reed has been singing since he was a child, he didn’t release his first album until 2006 at the tender age of 78. He’s since released two others, including I’m A Shy Guy in 2013. Along the way he’s gained recognition from DownBeat as Rising Star Male Vocalist five times from 2008-2013, and the prestigious Jazz Journalists Association named him Local Jazz Hero in 2011. Reed’s ability to get inside a lyric has been noted by numerous reviewers including DownBeat: “When Ed Reed sings, look for an intimate story every time… he establishes a connection to the lyrics and phrasing that is both beautiful and uncanny.”

LIFE ON THE WICKED STAGE: THE MUSIC OF JEROME KERN with Maye Cavallaro Jerome Kern was the composer of beautiful melodies that are just as fresh and inventive today. Kern penned over 700 songs for both the stage and movies and in 1970 was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He collaborated with Oscar Hammerstein to compose one of the first modern musicals, Show Boat, that featured an integrated story and songs, introducing such memorable tunes as “Ol Man River” and “Can’t Help Loving Dat Man.” Kern’s classic compositions include ‘”The Way You Look Tonight,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” and “All The Things You Are.” We’ll explore and sing Kern’s music, listen to how jazz greats have interpreted these songs and get ideas for our own arrangements! Students are provided with 10 lead sheets, including practice-backing tracks. In the final week we’ll work with an accompanist. 3 Sundays, Noon – 3pm: January 19, January 26, February 9 $220 advance • $235 day of workshop See instructor bio on page 39.
