Honduras en tus Ojos es la materialización de un ambicioso proyecto que recorrió nuestro país y que bajo la lente de dos reconocidos fotógrafos dará a conocer el potencial de nuestro país, nuestros paisajes y cultura, pero sobre todo mostrará al mundo que lo que hace grande a Honduras es su gente.
Honduras en tus Ojos is the embodiment of an ambitious project that toured our country and through the lens of two renowned photographers sought to portray our country’s potential, our landscapes, our culture, but mostly to show the world that what makes Honduras so great is its people.
Nuestro país tiene mucho que ofrecer: un legado cultural ancestral, una amplia biodiversidad que pocos países tienen la dicha de poseer y una ubicación geográfica estratégica que nos convierte en el destino turístico por excelencia de América Central.
Our country has a lot to offer. We have an ancient cultural heritage, a wide biodiversity that few countries are lucky to possess, and a strategic geographic location that makes us the most attractive tourism destination in Central America.
Estamos abiertos a las inversiones y trabajamos en el desarrollo de Honduras. Tenemos un ambicioso programa con la visión perfecta hacia el desarrollo: Honduras 2020. Mediante este programa, que es nuestra principal plataforma de crecimiento económico, vamos a desarrollar seis sectores económicos clave: el turismo, la industria textil, manufactura intermedia y los servicios de apoyo a negocios o call center. Pero también vamos a desarrollar el sector de la agroindustria y la vivienda. En los próximos cinco años vamos a generar más de 600 mil puestos de trabajo. Así es como estamos construyendo la Nueva Honduras. Queremos que se sepa que estamos abiertos, que estamos cambiando y que estamos trabajando día a día para brindar nuevas y mejores oportunidades a cada uno de nuestros compatriotas. We want to tell the world that we are a beautiful country with diverse destinations to visit, but we also want them to learn about out great potential. We want them to know that we are open, that we are developing, and that we are working day by day to provide new and better opportunities to every one of our fellow citizens. We are open to investment and we work constantly for the development of Honduras. We have designed an ambitious program with the perfect vision of development: Honduras 2020. Through this program, which is our main platform of economic growth, we will develop six key economic sectors: tourism, textiles, intermediate manufacturing, and support services to business or call centers, while we will also develop the agribusiness sector and infrastructure. In the next five years we will generate more than 600,000 job positions. This is how we are building the New Honduras. This publication is a project created within the Country Brand Strategy. Since its inception, it was developed through an inclusive process involving Honduran citizens, the National Investment Council (CNI), and the government of the Republic of Honduras. Strategic partnerships and the joint collaboration of the public and private sectors are essential to continue positioning Honduras nationally and internationally. We are all a part of our Country Brand; all Honduran citizens

Since its creation and at its core, the Country Brand looks to show Honduras to the world. The project Honduras en tus Ojos started as an initiative that forms part of the various activities carried out by the Country Brand to introduce Honduras to the world and spread the message that in Honduras, we are all about you! This project became a reality thanks to the collaboration of various stakeholders from the public and private sectors. Honduras en tus Ojos is another example that allows us to continue on the path we have created with the private sector, that reaffirms the commitment of every actor within the Country Brand, to help in the promotion of Honduras worldwide. The lens of Vicente Colindres and Justin Bridges captured the essence of Honduras by touring our country from end to end. Capturing the wonderful nature, the most famous sites, along with some locations that have yet to be discovered. Above all, Honduras en tus Ojos captures the essence of every citizen that
is proud of living in our country, knows first-hand what we have to offer, and is aware that Honduras has immense potential for development. We are a multiethnic and multicultural country that houses a unique and ancestral wealth. From the Ruins of Copรกn, we can experience the legacy of our Mayan ancestors, to Comayagua, where we house the oldest clock in America, extending to the spectacular beaches of the Bay Islands to appreciate the colonial treasures in Gracias. There are treasures found in every single city and destination in Honduras. It is our deepest desire that every person that reads this book will want to know more about Honduras and will look to visit and share a unique experience with the Honduran people. Vicente Colindres
Nació el 6 de julio de 1983 en Choluteca, Honduras. Hijo de un agrónomo y una maestra de primaria, tuvo su primer contacto con la fotografía la pre-adolescencia cuando sus padres compraron una cámara de bolsillo Kodak Tele Ektra. Pero fue hasta terminar su carrera universitaria en marketing cuando de manera entusiasta se interesó y persiguió la fotografía al verse en la necesidad de poder contar de una mejor manera las historias de progreso y desarrollo de los niños y familias que eran parte de la obra de beneficencia para la cual trabajaba. Desde ese punto, el entusiasmo se convirtió en una pasión genuina. Acudió a varios cursos elementales de fotografía impartidos por maestros como Juan Pablo Martel y Arturo Sosa en Tegucigalpa y en EE.UU. bajo la tutela del fotógrafo de paisaje Tom Carpenter y la fotógrafa de bodas Jacki Warren. A partir de ahí ha sido un constante aprendizaje gracias a la combinación de esfuerzo, recursos en línea, práctica e intercambio de experiencias con artistas y colegas, hasta convertir la pasión por la fotografía a un emprendimiento profesional en donde como dijo Cartier-Bresson: “...alineas tu cabeza, tu ojo y tu corazón a un mismo punto”.
Vicente A. Colindres was born on July 6, 1983 in Choluteca, Honduras. Born to an agronomist and an elementary school teacher, he had his first contact with photography during his preadolescent years when his parents bought him a Kodak Tele Ektra pocket camera. However, it wasn’t until nearly ending his university studies in marketing that he decided to pursue photography enthusiastically. During that time, Vicente worked for a local charity organization and recognized the need to rely on a better way to document the stories of progress and development of the organization’s children and families. From that point on, his enthusiasm turned into a genuine passion. Vicente attended various elementary photography courses taught by teachers like Juan Pablo Martel and Arturo Sosa in Tegucigalpa, and received instruction from landscape photographer Tom Carpenter and wedding photographer Jacki Warren in the United States. From then on it has been a constant learning experience as well as a combination of effort, online resources, practice, and sharing of experiences between artists and colleagues. In order to turn his passion for photography into a professional venture, it is, as Cartier-Bresson said, “to put on the same line of sight the head, the eye, and the heart.”

Justin Bridges
Justin Bridges es un fotógrafo de moda y retrato. Se crió en Atlanta, Georgia, y actualmente vive en Harlem, Nueva York. Justin empezó su carrera profesional en Goldman Sachs como un operador de acciones. A pesar de que poseía la pasión de analizar los mercados del mundo, se dio cuenta muy tempranamente que el arte debía formar parte de la ecuación. Después de una temporada en Saks Fifth Avenue como asistente de compras, Justin empezó su carrera de tiempo completo como fotógrafo en el 2013. Recientemente ha trabajado en proyectos para publicaciones de moda (GQ, Details), marcas (Giorgio Armani, Public School NY), y tiendas (Barneys, Bloomingdales, Totokaelo). En el 2016, Justin lanzó una pequeña empresa de consultoría de marcas—en la cual brinda servicios de dirección creativa, estrategia digital y fotografía. Disfruta viajar y acumular millas de viajero frecuente, comer y el espacio.

In 2016, Justin launched a small brand consulting business – taking commissions for creative direction, digital strategy, and photography. He enjoys accumulating Frequent Flier Miles, eating, and space.

United by a passion In Tegucigalpa, soccer is a passion that is lived every day. It is found in every corner, it travels through the city’s air and brings contagious emotions that unite all Hondurans in one single voice during that magical moment of the goal. Joy, as well as sorrow, are emotions felt during the intense matches of the National Team. It has the whole country wearing the same shirt in its honor, that blue garment which demonstrates how they all carry Honduras in their hearts. Un pasado esplendoroso Tegucigalpa es una ciudad de parques, pero ninguno de ellos es tan querido como La Leona. Antiguo mirador y punto de descanso de mineros que cruzaban el lugar con sus mulas a mediados de 1800, comenzó a construirse a principios del siglo XX, capturando para siempre el encanto de antaño. En el centro del parque, inaugurado en 1925, surge la estatua en bronce del general Manuel Bonilla, expresidente de la República. El monumento en su honor refleja lo que fue, un hombre de carácter firme, que aprendió muy pequeño el oficio de la carpintería y el arte de tocar violín y pronto comenzó su formación militar que lo llevaría a convertirse en general y posteriormente en presidente durante dos períodos.
A magnificent past Tegucigalpa is a city of parks, but none of them are as cherished as La Leona. Originally, La Leona served as a scenic overlook and resting point for miners who crossed the park with their mules in the mid-1800s. Construction began in the early twentieth century, forever capturing the charm of the past. In the center of the park, which opened in 1925, you can find the bronze statue of General Manuel Bonilla, a former president of Honduras. The monument, built in his honor, reflects the late politician. General Bonilla was a man of strong character, who learned at a young age the craft of carpentry and the art of playing the violin, and following his military training it led him to become a general and president for two terms.

Brushstrokes of history It is impossible not to stop for a moment and take a look at the most famous corner in La Leona, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Tegucigalpa. A surreal and colorful fusion of Mayan stelae, indigenous people, animals, and other elements that represent part of the history of Honduras, come to life in a unique mural that is the first in the city to be outdoors. The author muralist Nelson Salgado, a loyal admirer of Peter Paul Rubens and Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, resides right under the shadow of his own artwork. Raise your head to the sky and look around for one of the most emblematic manifestations of faith in the city. The Juana Laínez Hill has always been part of the Tegucigalpa landscape. It is a witness of the city’s evolution, since it was an old mining town to becoming a city full of energy. Among its green vegetation, at its summit lies the Peace Monument, built in 1948 during the administration of Tiburcio Carías Andino, and designed by the engineer Francisco Prats, to commemorate the victory of the allied nations in World War II. You won’t have any problems getting to the monument: every street in the city leads to the symbolic hill and the five-starred white and blue flag will remind you of the value of peace and democracy.

Fruits of our land La Cantadora, located 13 kilometers outside of Tegucigalpa, is a small village mainly inhabited by farmers who take advantage of the favorable climate and are dedicated to cultivating blackberries, strawberries, and vegetables. If you ask the locals, they will tell you the best way to get to the Finca La Encantadora, a mandatory stop where you can enjoy their famous organic blackberry wine. These delicate fruits are harvested over seven hectares of land and later undergo a careful process to turn it into a delicious drink. Cheers!

The ultimate expression of the Catholic faith is found here, in the Sanctuary of Suyapa, a Latin cross plan church that was built in 1954 and in 2015, was declared a minor basilica by the Vatican. Every February, this monumental location is the stage for a true religious celebration in honor of the Virgin of Suyapa, patron saint of Honduras.

Tras las huellas de Francis Drake La temperatura comienza a subir de forma evidente, es señal que hemos llegado al antiguo y pacífico puerto de Amapala ubicado en la Isla del Tigre, departamento de Valle. Su nombre suena a playa, huele a mar, a pescado frito, a diversión. Pero también nos remite a historias de piratas, a los que la isla debe su nombre. Y es que a finales del siglo XVI, el corsario inglés sir Francis Drake, enfrentó y derrotó a un grupo de temibles piratas en una sangrienta lucha. Por su ferocidad los chorotegas lo consideraban como un tigre por lo que comenzaron a llamar a la isla Tecuantepetl, que significa “Cerro del tigre”. Tiempo después, en la época de la post colonia, el puerto de Amapala fue fundado el 17 de octubre de 1833, convirtiéndose en el más importante de Honduras por ser la única entrada marítima por océano pacífico.
Following the footsteps of Sir Francis Drake When you feel the temperature rising, it’s a clear indication that we have reached the old Pacific Port of Amapala located on the Isla del Tigre, Valle. Its name sounds like a beach, smells like the sea, fried fish, and fun. It also reminds us of pirate stories, to which the island owes its name. And it is that at the end of the sixteenth century, the English privateer Sir Francis Drake, confronted and defeated a group of fearsome pirates in a bloody battle. Due to his ferociousness the chorotegas compared him to a tiger and they started to call the island Tecuantepetl, which means “hill of the tiger.” Later, in the post-colonial era, the Port of Amapala was founded on October 17, 1833, became the most important port in Honduras, as the only maritime gateway to the Pacific Ocean.

Quietly and gently, Amapala modestly preserves the glory of its past as the most important port of the region and as the setting to historic events. On August 27, 1876, the city hosted the presidential inauguration of Dr. Marco Soto, who delivered his first administrative agreements. Located in the central corridor of the valley of the same name, Comayagua was founded in 1537 by the Lientenant Governor Alonso de Caceres with the name Concepción del Valle de Comayagua. A historic clock tower Perhaps the first reason you will want to visit Comayagua is because of the historic clock in its cathedral. It was built by the Moors during their occupation of Spain around year 1100 and started to function in this city in 1636. King Phillip III donated the clock to the Cathedral of Comayagua and in 1711 it was taken to its current location. It’s an Arab clock with rigorous machinery that operates on weights and marks the quarter hours and hours with different sounds. While standing in the Central Plaza facing the Cathedral of Comayagua, you can’t help but feel small compared to the magnitude of this beautiful building, constructed between 1704 and 1708, and dedicated to Saint Mary. Thanks to its baroque architecture, it’s considered the first cathedral in America and one of the most beautiful on the continent. It consists of three naves, five domes, and a bell tower. Cross its threshold, open your eyes, and take a moment to observe every detail of the altars with colonial paintings and hand-carved images.

El Fuerte San Cristóbal, conformado por varios torreones de vigilancia, un cuartel de mando y dos cañones con el emblema de Carlos VI, donados por los españoles, fue construido estratégicamente en una pequeña cima en Gracias, cabecera departamental de Lempira. Aunque no es de carácter colonial, su edificación tardó más de diez años y fue concluida en 1876 con el propósito de defender la ciudad de las invasiones de los ejércitos enemigos. El tiempo ha pasado, ya no hay amenazas de batallas y la paz se instaló aquí para siempre, pero el fuerte sigue de pie, pintado de blanco, custodiando las verdes montañas y como escenario de fotos para el recuerdo. Fort San Cristóbal is comprised of several watchtowers, one command station, and two cannons with the emblem of Carlos V, which were donated by the Spanish and built strategically in a small peak in Gracias, the departmental capital of Lempira. Even though it does not have a colonial style, it took more than ten years to build and was completed in 1876 with the purpose of defending the city from invasions of enemy armies. Time has passed, there aren’t any threats of battle and peace is established here forever, but the fort still stands, painted in white, guarding the green mountains and setting the stage for memorable photos. If you are interested in history, you won’t overlook the fact that the tomb of President Juan Lindo is here, whose famous phrase reads printed on a plaque, “You can be a hated ruler of your time, but if you want to be loved by future generations, build schools.”

Comienza la historia El origen de la historia está en la siembra de la semilla, que tarda entre 50 y 60 días en llegar a una altura adecuada para el trasplante. Las semillas de tabaco son muy delicadas y sensibles al viento, al clima y las enfermedades. De ahí que reciben cuidados extremos que garanticen su germinación para que se conviertan, en aproximadamente 12 a 15 semanas, en esbeltas plantas cargadas de flores. El suelo bendito y fértil permite que estén listas para dar el siguiente paso, igual de cuidadoso pero más largo.

Tobacco seeds are very delicate and vulnerable to the wind, weather, and disease. Los productores de tabaco de El Paraíso llevan sobre sus hombros gran parte de la responsabilidad de mantener el buen prestigio de los puros hondureños, actualmente considerados entre los mejores del mundo. De ahí los ensartadores unen las hojas por pares y las colocan en largos palos de madera de las que cuelgan durante aproximadamente 45 y 50 días, tiempo que dura el secado y curación.

The tobacco manufacturers in El Paraíso have the great responsibility of maintaining the prestige of the Honduran cigars, which are currently considered among the best in the world. That’s why they don’t hesitate to hire the best farmers, artisans, or engineers, creating a whole community of skilled laborers living this passion as their own. While you walk through the areas of drying and curing, the workers will happily tell you what happens after the harvest, which is a complex process that is performed leaf by leaf. In the court to the east of the Acropolis, in the heart of the archeological site, was the royal complex of the city. Here, archeologists have conducted extensive excavations where they have discovered several hieroglyphic texts carved in stone that belong to the early Classical period, as well as ceremonial shrines, plazas, and other spaces for diverse uses that reflect the influence and political power of its rulers.

Naturaleza sagrada El cielo brilla más allá de la frondosa vegetación y los árboles de pino, caoba, San Juan, cedro y la sagrada Ceiba que parecen proteger del paso del tiempo la Acrópolis de Copán, centro principal del poder real, constituido por dos grandes plazas rodeadas de importantes construcciones, razón de más para que esta ciudadela haya sido declarada por la UNESCO Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad en 1980.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, as the center of the royal power, the Copán Acrópolis is comprised of two large plazas and is surrounded by important buildings.

Una de las razones que trae hasta aquí a miles de visitantes cada año es su majestuosa Escalinata Jeroglífica en la que se esculpió una especie de árbol genealógico de la dinastía copáneca, fundada por Yax-Kuk-Mo. La increíble escalinata de 30 metros de ancho y casi 30 metros de alto tiene 63 escalones con más de 2,500 glifos que narran la historia de sus reyes y que constituyen el texto jeroglífico más largo de todo el continente americano. En primer plano surge imponente la estela M que representa al gobernante K’ak’ Yipyaj Chan K’awiil (749-763), el décimo quinto gobernante de Copán.
One attraction that draws thousands of visitors every year to this site is the majestic Hieroglyphic Stairway, which includes a sort of a family tree of the Copán dynasty, founded by YaxKuk-Mo. The marvelous stairway is 30 meters wide and almost 30 meters high, with 63 steps and more than 2,500 glyphs that narrate the story of their kings, comprising the longest hieroglyphic text in the entire American continent. In the foreground lays the M stelae that represents the ruler K’ak’ Yipyaj Chan K’awiil (749-763), the fifteenth ruler of Copán.

Otro ángulo del Campo de Pelota, conformado por dos amplias plataformas inclinadas de piedra que fueron construidas por órdenes del décimo tercer gobernante (18 Conejo), entre los años 695 y 738 a.C. Según historiadores, los mayas jugaban con una pelota de hule, sólida y muy pesada que se movilizaba con el hombro, el brazo y la cadera, para lo cual los jugadores se protegían esas partes del cuerpo con cueros y telas.
Here, shows another angle of the Ballcourt, comprised of two sloping stone platforms, that were commissioned by the thirteenth ruler (18 Conejo), around 695 and 738 a.C. According to historians, the Mayans played with a solid and heavy rubber ball that they moved around with their shoulders, arms, and hips. To protect themselves, players covered their body parts in leather and fabric for added cushion.

Otro ángulo de las bóvedas falsas, donde varias hileras de piedra que encajan a la perfección asemejan los techos triangulares de las chozas que habitaban nuestros antepasados. Las esquinas de las pirámides, símbolos de montañas, también fueron construidas con un cuidado especial, observando modelos estéticos, al igual que cada uno de los peldaños. A través de los guías sabrás que cada pirámide tenía un propósito especial, algunas de ellas usadas incluso para facilitar las observaciones de solsticios, equinoccios y pasos cenitales del sol.
This photo captures another angle of the corbel vault, where several rows of stone fit perfectly together to resemble the triangular roofs of the huts inhabited by our ancestors. The corners of the pyramids, symbolizing mountains, were also built with special care, observing aesthetic models, like each one of the steps. The tour guides will tell you that each pyramid served a special purpose; some of them were used to facilitate observation of solstices, equinoxes, and the sun zenith steps.

Los habilidosos escultores de Copán nos dejaron como legado magníficas estelas, que más que retratos de reyes, son valiosas piezas históricas en las que plasmaron en cada detalle su percepción sobre la monarquía, religión y el origen del universo. Cargadas de simbolismo y mitos, fueron elaboradas con piedras rectangulares de caliza, talladas con un arte difícil de superar. Un elemento que predomina en sus esculturas es la imagen del jaguar, que para los mayas era símbolo inequívoco de poder y que se aprecia en una versión danzante en la Plaza de los Jaguares. A la derecha, la estela P con la imagen del undécimo gobernante de Copán, Humo Cielo (o Humo Serpiente).
The skilled sculptors of Copán left behind a legacy of magnificent Mayan stelae. More than portraits of kings, the stelae are valuable historical pieces that captured in detail the sculptors’ perceptions about the monarchy, religion, and the origin of the universe. Filled with symbolism and myths, the stelae were crafted with rectangular limestones and carved with exceptional craftsmanship. One element that predominates in the sculptures is the image of a jaguar, a symbol of power for the Mayans, which can be seen in a dancing representation in the Plaza of the Jaguars. To the right is the Stelae P with an image of the eleventh ruler of Copán, Humo Cielo (or Humo Serpiente).

Quizás por el rojo predominante de su plumaje, se consideraba representante de K’inich Ahau, el poderoso dios del Sol. Sus plumas eran usadas para decorar los tocados, trajes, joyería, escudos de los reyes y otros miembros de la nobleza. Throughout the Mayan structures we find representations of the guara or red macaw, revered as a sacred bird. Perhaps because of its predominant red feathers, it was considered representative of K’inich Ahau, the mighty god of the sun. Its feathers were used to decorate headdresses, costumes, jewelry, and shields of rulers or other members of nobility. Its beautiful presence and majestic flight is part of the charm of the archeological site, where they live freely. You can also interact with them at the Macaw Mountain Bird Park, where they are protected for reproduction.

The Mayans showcased their art through beautiful representations. One of them was ceramic, which they perfected not only thorough production techniques, but also through paintings that made each piece unique. They were also magnificent potters that created pieces for ceremonial use as well as tableware that was decorated with graphic scenes and accompanied by hieroglyphic texts, each with a distinct aesthetic. No visit to Honduras is complete without tasting at least one baleada. The name probably sounds a little funny to you, but you’ll soon realize that it’s one of the most representative dishes of Honduras. In every region you will find some variation to it, however it won’t break the balance of the original recipe: a flour tortilla stuffed with refried beans, grated cheese, and sour cream. From El Progreso, where it’s said to have originated, all the way to Copán, the baleada is part of the daily meal in people’s homes and on the menu in many restaurants. Proud of their heritage, the garífunas comprise an ethnic group of African origin whose culture contrasts with that of other peoples. Despite the passing of time, they manage to stay true to their traditions that are remarkably close to those of their descendants. The greatest concentration of Garífunas in the Central American region and the Caribbean is believed to be found in Honduras. Roatán is home to many of them, where you’ll find them almost every day doing, among other things, what they love most: singing and dancing. For both activities men and boys wear loose pants made out of a soft fabric, usually white, with headscarves to cover their head that they tie according to the type of dance, and necklaces made of sea snails and seeds. To cure lovesickness, prevent diseases, cheer up or to live a longer life… no matter the reason why you decide to try it, guiffity is an ancestral drink whose secrets have yet to be fully revealed. The first group of Garífunas who arrived at Punta Gorda more than two centuries ago brought this drink to the Honduran Caribbean. The herbal drink is prepared with sweet-scented marigold, anise, cloves, and potency wood, among other herbs. They are all combined in a flask with aguardiente schnapps or rum and then buried, or placed in the sun, to allow for fermentation for more than two weeks.
