YEAH! It’s got a
Jonathan “Mopar Maniac” Bernier We’ve all heard it a million times, but what exactly does it mean? The term “Hemi” refers to the use of hemispherical combustion chambers as opposed to the traditional wedge shape. Hemispherical combustion chambers date back as far as the early 1900s, with no clear origin, but the first immensely popular Hemi automobile came about in 1951 when Chrysler released the 331 cubic inch Firepower Hemi V-8. Matching the leading Cadillac V-8 inch for cubic inch, the Firepower Hemi produced a full 20 more horsepower, despite using a 7:1 compression ratio compared to Cadillac’s 7.5:1 ratio. The new combustion chambers proved to be an unquestionable boost to power. The new hemispherical combustion chambers were not without some drawbacks however. With the new design came a much more complicated and slightly heavier setup. Being notably more powerful, the added weight was of little concern. The more complicated internals, however, made the costs of production and consequently repairs increase notably. The biggest drawback with the early Hemi was a lack of power at low RPMs. Despite having exceptional performance at high RPMs, as one would expect on a race track, the combustion chambers proved to be less efficient in normal city driving conditions than the tradition wedge shape. Flash forward a decade. It’s 1964. The rivalry of the Big 3 is heating up. Enter the 426, the first motor to be officially dubbed with the soon to be trademark “Hemi” name. Due to its size, weight, and monstrous power it was nicknamed “The Elephant Motor.” In its first year, the Hemi proved what it was capable of, taking not one, not two, not three, but all of the top four places in the Daytona 500. No one questioned the superior racing applications of the new heads. For nearly a decade

t a Hemi! Chrysler ran the so-called “Elephant Motor,” until emissions regulations made the motor completely impractical for street use, putting the “Hemi” badge to rest until its revival thirty years later.
2003 marked a huge milestone for Chrysler: The revival of the Hemi name. Available in just light and medium duty trucks to start, the initial 5.7 liter Hemi evolved into 6.1 L, 6.4 L, and even a supercharged 6.2 L iteration deemed the “Hellcat” which is available in the Charger and Challenger, offering a staggering 707 HP off the showroom floor. This third generation, however, bears little resemblance to their predecessors. In the third generation, “Hemi” has become little more than a marketing tool bore by the newest generation of powerhouse V-8 motors offered by Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Ram. So what does it mean to have a Hemi? A true Hemi is a motor that uses complex hemispherical combustion chambers as made famous by Chrysler in the 50s and 60s, generally used for racing applications, generating tremendous high end power on the track, but in modern days the term has simply come to represent the newest generation of V-8s produced by Chrysler. Regardless of the generation, having a Hemi means you’re packing some serious power under the hood.

8. Drag Racing requires safety equipment for both the vehicle and the driver that could ultimately save a driver’s life, as well as the lives of their opponent if something goes wrong. Very rarely do STREET RACERS have proper safety equipment in place. 9. Drag Racing requires a preliminary Technical Inspection by highly trained officials that eliminate unsafe or improperly equipped vehicles from competition. When you put over 100k dollars into your car, you want to make sure the guy next to you isn’t going to take you out because of a failed or excessively worn component. 10. Drag Racing takes place on a properly prepared racing surface that is consistently maintained by trained professionals. STREET RACING takes place on public roadways with no anticipation of possible hazards or damages to the driving surfaces. Obviously this article is going to generate all kinds of responses, some good, some bad, and that’s great. But at the end of it all, my hope is that it will make its way into the hands of just a few television and newspaper professionals so that they can be properly educated on the clear and concise differences between Drag Racing, which is a LEGAL SPORT, and STREET RACING, which is a criminal activity.

OUTLAW PREVIEW A Whole New Season of Heads Up Racing
ED YESSAIAN
It’s hard to believe that by the time this issue is printed we will already be back at New England Dragway, after a fairly mild winter that seemed to fly by. For a lot of people this winter gave them the opportunity to upgrade, for others it was just some quick refreshing and tune ups, but either way, another winter has passed and it’s time to go drag racing. The 2015 Outlaw 10.50 season had a couple of new faces in the winner’s circle and also on the Championship podium. Most of the Champs will return to defend their titles in 2016 but with a bunch of new racers coming in and quite a few others moving up into different classes, it’s going to be pretty interesting to see what happens throughout the ten races scheduled this year. I took the time to review the last three season’s statistics as well as a lot of the social media posts on what people were doing to their cars over the winter, just to take a wild guess at who might end up on top. This is just a brief summary of what we might see this year, for entertainment purposes… TRUE STREET 12.50 2014 Champion Ron Childs and 2015 Champion Dave Nadeau have both moved on to faster indexes. 2015 Runner-Up Papa Bagnell could very well be a top contender this year if he can make all ten races, but he will have some fierce competition along the way. Jeremy Young has had a handful of wins in the last couple seasons and Rhode Island’s Jim Reilly has been a top contender as well. RB Phillips ended the 2015 season with some spectacular races and the Nitrous powered Lincoln Mark VIII of Glenn Boudreau was a force to be reckoned with. REAL STREET 11.50 2015 Champion Rich Cosenza will return with a vengeance but will also have a good group of competitors to contend with. Rich St Martin made quite a few impressive runs last year and Ted O’Connell was spot on in the LS1 Camaro SS. This class had some spotty attendance last season but if he makes
the majority of the races, Ted O’Connell could give Cosenza a really good run for the Championship. FAST STREET 10.50 This particular group has always had great attendance and a huge pool of talent. Former Champions Ron Childs, Bob Dugan, and Dave Nadeau have all moved on to other indexes, but 2014 Champion Ed Miller still remains on the top of the charts. Other contenders include Ron Pomerleau, who we featured last month with a new S10 pickup, and Tony Jarvis, who has had tons of wins over the years. New England’s winner of “The List” Joe Brooks will be returning to try and make his mark in Outlaw and Chris Rice who finished in 3rd after missing half the 2015 season will try to make a comeback as well. Rice could very well be the one to watch in 2016.
for the last couple years, which pretty much handed Dave Rossini the 2014 and 2015 Championships. Taking nothing away from Rossini’s talent, it would be nice to build up this class for 2016. Viking Motorsports’ Scott Erickson will be making the majority of the races this season and may also be bringing his sidekick Gregg Boudreau who will run his blown fox-body Mustang. There were a couple of rumors floating around the playground in the off season- One rumor was that we may see the return of Hratch Karaguezian and his Nova, which could make things interesting. There was also a rumor that Tony Jarvis could be moving up from Fast Street to Super Street. WILD STREET 8.50 The Wild One Jim Dayotas returns to defend his 2015 Championship, but he will surely have his hands full in the fastest class of the bunch. Tube Chassis Designz Jon Sandahl who also has a handful of championships in this index will certainly be a top contender. Ben Sanford looks to make a good impression in his second season, but will have to fend off his father Bill Sanford, who has dozens of wins in the 8.50 class. Every single one of these guys is insanely accurate off the tree and there’s just no telling who could take the top spot in 2016.

NASCAR WHELAN MODIFIEDS: ANYTIME REALTY 150 The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is making its way back to Seekonk Speedway in 2016, thanks to a sponsor whose company is growing faster than the cars that display its name, Anytime Realty. The last NASCAR Whelen modified tour race held at Seekonk Speedway, was in 2005, and has left many fans eagerly waiting its return. The fans will get what they have been waiting for on Saturday September 10th for the AnytimeRealty.com 150. This event has already been nicknamed by many, “The race of the year”. “This year I have really been focusing on aligning my company with some of the biggest and best organizations, and having a chance to team up with NASCAR, and the great people at Seekonk Speedway, to me was just a no brainer says Don Parsons the owner of Anytime Realty. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Division is actually NASCAR’s oldest division and is one of two open-wheeled divisions. They are based on a tubular chassis and fabricated with sheet metal with the two front wheels and much
of the front end exposed. A NASCAR Whelen Modified is also a standard eleven inches shorter in height and over twenty three inches wider than that of a Sprint Cup car. They are typically powered by small block V8 engines ranging from 355 to 368, and engine components are similar to that of a Sprint Cup except for the fact that they use a small four barrel carburetor rated at 390 cubic feet per minute (half the airflow of previously modified carburetors).
Anytime Realty will be on site Saturday September 10th giving cool stuff away, taking photos, and displaying some of the most popular race cars on the track. The cars on display will be the Don Parsons Racing #98 Ford Pro Stock driven by Rey Lovelace, the Scully Motorsports #2 Chevy Pro Stock driven by Tom Scully Jr, and the Lindblad Racing #48 driven by Ryan Lineham. Anytime Realty has become the #1 choice amongst racers and motorsport fans for the sale or purchase of property in Southern New England. Its important to support those who support the sport and this company has proven to support many and be around for a while. To make an appointment to sell or purchase a home, please contact their friendly staff at (401) 949-5900, or browse their website at www.AnytimeRealty.com, or visit their Johnston, RI location at 269 Greenville Avenue in Johnston, Rhode Island. 16| Motorhead Magazine - April 2016

READERS RIDES
CHRIS’ “CRISIS” CAMARO JIM WEICHERDING Growing up Chris had a couple of muscle cars. His first love was a 1972 Camaro which got him in a lot of trouble. He later owned a 1967 Chevelle and his favorite was a 1969 Camaro SS, the one he let get away. He met his wife Liz and she had known about the car and where it was parked but not who owned it. They began going out together about a month later when he brought her by his house. As she’s walking up his driveway she stopped and said, “Isn’t this the yard that ‘69 Camaro is parked in?” Unfortunately, he sold it two months earlier. She told me then “I would have never let you sell that.” They looked into buying a 1954 Chevy but it needed a full restoration and we just didn’t have the ability do it. After that, they had kids and hot rods became a distant memory. Now fast forward 26 years to 2014. Chris heard about a local cruise night with The Wheels of Time club so they headed down to the venue. He got a little itch that night so they went to another and then another. Shortly after that on a sunny July afternoon he asked Liz “why haven’t we ever bought a muscle car together, I mean we both love them.” The fire was lit like a raging inferno. The couple started scouring the want ads every minute they had. They eventually found a one owner 1972 Nova down at the Cape. The morning they were suppose to look at it the owner told Chris he sold it to a friend. They were disappointed but back to the ads they went. Some people (like Chris) believe things happen for a reason. And then there it was! He spotted a 1972 Camaro in NH on Craigslist that was running but needed paint. They took a ride up to look at it and put a deposit down that night. All week long he thinking, “this is too good to be true. This guy’s gonna sell it or change his mind.” Saturday came and they both picked the Camaro up without any problems. That is until the ride home. The truck Chris borrowed from a friend broke down in the
middle of Rt 93 just outside of Boston. The fuel pump had blown and there they sat, Camaro on a trailer with a broken down truck blocking the whole right lane of RT 93 holding up traffic. Is this an omen already? They must have had someone watching over them because an angel named Ramón, a flat bed driver came by and saved the day. He had passed him in the tunnel and he gave
them the thumbs up when he saw the Camaro. His brother has a beautiful Chevelle he’s building so he’s a car guy. It was lucky for them they had passed him two minutes before they broke down. He ended up towing them and the car all the way home, truck and trailer. They got the car home and better assessed the shape it was in. It was 98% ready for paint. Lights were out; bumpers were off, just plain ready for final sanding and paint. He hadn’t planned on painting her so soon. He really didn’t have the money so Chris decided that he would attempt the paint job. Now, he had never even picked up a spray gun before but he wanted to do this car all by himself. After going back and forth on color choices they chose to go with Jade green to be a little different. Funny thing is after they picked the color he looked at the original key and it had green plastic on it. Yup, they picked the right color. He kept saying, “it’s a good thing he didn’t realize at the time how badly he could have screwed up that paint job” but for his first one
ever he thought it came out pretty good. Now with the help of his wife and son-in-law and some long days and nights in the garage they got her put together enough in about two months to make the last couple of cruise nights of the 2014 season. The first one they attended was at the Wal-Mart in Halifax when they arrived the radiator sprung a leak. The second cruise night went better but as the weeks went on, the leaky rear main seal got worse. They knew right then and there they were tearing it apart over the winter. Luckily a neighbor had a truck he was selling that had a brand new crate motor in it. Over that first winter they took out the tired stock 1971 350 and replaced it with the new 350 hyd roller motor. Chris changed out the cam with a .500 lift Comp cam and then added some Dart hi-performance Vortec heads, roller rockers and topped it off with a chrome Edelbrock dual quad setup. He always wanted dual quads just because there was something about the look. The exhaust runs through Hooker headers into Flowmaster mufflers and 2-1/2” pipes throughout for a nice rumble sound. It came with a brand new cowl hood but Chris bought a stock hood and custom cut a hole in the shape of a bowtie to show off those shiny dual quads. It has a Turbo 350 automatic with a shift kit and 3.08’s in the rear which allows them to cruise anywhere they want. And they do love to cruise! They plan on going with a 3.42 posi as soon as possible. This winter the interior will get all the attention with custom door panels, a custom center console and a brand new complete set of gauges and dash. His wife nicknamed the Camaro “Crisis” as in mid-life. Wish he had a mid-life crisis years ago. They have had a blast going to cruise nights and meeting all the great car people over this past year. Chris and Liz have not only made some new friends but have caught up with some old friends. So here’s to many more miles and many more friends! Happy Cruisin’! SEASON OPENER
Mustangs of Massachusetts Cruise to Bowen’s Garage ED YESSAIAN As I sit looking out the window at a first day of spring snowstorm, I wonder to myself, exactly when will I get my car together and ready for the open road? But prior to this oddball weather mishap, it was actually a couple weeks ago that the majority of the Mustangs of Massachusetts club members fired up their ponies and headed south to the historic Bowen’s Garage in Eastford Connecticut. Bowen’s has a rich history of both new and performance car sales and service, and was more than happy to welcome in the dozens of MoM crew. Originally established in 1922 by Oliver D Bowen, Bowen’s Garage joined Ford as a franchise in 1930. Almost 100 years later, while the technology has changed, the family oriented business has stayed the same. In its current state, Bowen’s partners with Juggernaut Power, a military owned and operated Mustang performance division that promises to deliver exceptional bang for your buck through honest service and proven methods of gaining horsepower. Obviously once I heard that they have military experience and good old fashioned honest American values, I made it a point mention that I’d like to tag along during the next cruise or car show that takes place. Just a couple of projects I’ll need to check out are Rey Rivera’s Vortech flagship 2015 GT and the updated 2013 of John Lehoullier who just completed a 2015 shortblock and head swap. I also just recently learned that they are sponsoring a handful of upcoming NMRA events, which shows their support of drag racing and the Mustang hobby as a whole. If you’re in the area of Eastford, Connecticut, I strongly recommend you check out Bowen’s garage and you may even catch me there, as it has definitely been added to my “to-do list” in 2016. Who knows, you and your ride could even end up in Motorhead!!

TWISTED TRANSFORMATION
THE LOVE BUG
Lauryn “Hotwheels” Pontiac-Vernancio
It was not too long ago that we visited Tim Scheller from 401 Restos to gaze upon the meaningful version of his “Love Bug” which is a 1965 Volkswagen Beetle. Back then it was a basic black, had some engine modifications, but looked otherwise not far from stock minus the slightly raised and fabricated rear hood. This year, Tim certainly outdid himself with a whole new custom look and a shocking change to the vehicle’s performance. The new look of this little Hot Rod was delightful as it was decked in a metallic Root Beer color which glistened and definitely showed it’s true color in the sun. The back wheels will now match the fronts as he masterminded painting the outer rings for a new look. They are usually polished to enhance the look of a brilliant stance, and this stance also shows while rolling off of a tubular suspension complete with a ladder bar rear end and QA1’s which you normally wouldn’t find on a German automobile like this! The rear end definitely needed the new suspension due to the increased horsepower of a power adder! You could immediately see a Dick Landy Industries (New Holley 471) powercharger peeking out from underneath a Big Wig race car drag wing. This in turn was meshed with a mechanical secondary 650 Mighty demon carburetor. This was all topped onto a 2276 engine mated to a 091 transmission which definitely put some pep into its step. While this car may appear to be based off of a standard 60’s Beetle, there is absolutely nothing produced by the manufacturer about it. In fact, Tim Scheller

boasts that the only original portions of the vehicle are the two doors and window glass. 1976 Custom F1 By John Conti Jr.
I’m thirteen years old and my dad asks me, “You’re gonna be getting your license soon, what do you say we disassemble the F100, restore the body and build it into a race truck and it can be yours to drive?” Now, I’ve been working at my dad’s auto shop since I was eight, a few hours after school and all summer when school was out. Not working on customer’s vehicles but helping the guys out when they needed a hand and doing shop maintenance or small projects like painting, glass beading small parts, organizing and tasks an eight year old could handle. Because of that, I’ve spent A LOT of time around cars/hot rods/drag cars/bikes, etc. so without hesitation my response to my dad’s question was, “Really?!?! Absolutely!” And so the F100 project began its transformation from a normal 1976 Ford pickup to a “stock in appearance”, custom street/strip machine. We disassembled each and every part on that truck and separated what we were getting rid of and what we were going to reuse. Sand blasting, prepping and painting was getting monotonous as any twelve or thirteen year old can imagine. But I stuck with it and while my friends were out riding bikes or playing ball, I was in the garage fabricating and building what was becoming my own and I had no problem with that. There came a point when I was at my wits end… rust and rot repair. The body had quite a bit of rot once we really dug in. We replaced the floor pans, rockers, bottoms of the doors and a lot of other pinch weld areas. Once the body’s steel work was done (all butt welded, never patched over as dad taught me right), the engine build had begun.

We chose to build an 8:1 compression 350 small block Chevy. Clay Smith solid roller cam, Dart iron heads, Jesel cam belt drive (and we don’t favor Chevy over Ford or vice versa but most spare parts at my disposal were (at the time) Chevrolet) put an 871 Hampton blower on it and fed it with 16, yes 16 fuel injectors for which my dad had built a custom intake manifold for, 8 above the blower and 8 below. We built a modified turbo 400 trans and installed a 4-link suspension setup in the rear with tubular driveshaft hoops incorporated into the 4-link 2” X 4” cross member. After 4 years since my dad had asked me the question, my 1976 custom F100 was complete…or was it??? My dad, younger brother Jim and I spent many weekends at New England, Lebanon Valley and Maple Grove dragways making passes with the truck and watching our times getting quicker and quicker. We even drove it (not trailered it but drove it) down to Daytona, Florida where we entered it into the “Turkey Run” in 1998. We had perfect runs and not so perfect runs (engines blown/trans slipping/slicks just not making any traction). The time came when we decided to start with a whole new engine build. We put together a 406 Dart block with ARF heads and a Banks twin turbo setup. This combination was dyno-ed by Banks and pushed out 1100 flywheel horsepower on race gas/850 on 93 pump gas. It was all laptop programmable through the DFI Accel computer system. The fuel management wiring was almost a “plug and play”, but the rest of the truck’s build (trans brake/gauges/electric fuel pumps/lighting/etc.) was a huge learning curve in electronics. After many more fun filled weekends and several runs down the track, we again happened to blow the engine and were back at the shop rebuilding and enhancing with different ideas.
F100
On our best run, the “blue sleeper” pickup managed to make a 10.02 second run at 136 mph and for weighing in at 4400 pounds and not so aerodynamic, I’d have to say, that’s not too bad. It’s not in the 9s like we were hoping, but we’ll get there. Now, at 33 years of age, I have my own family and my own garage that the F100 sits in. And even though my nights and weekends are super busy with house maintenance and spending time with my wife Amanda and little girl Annabelle, I’ll be making time to get to the track and bring home a 9 second time slip. After spending most of my childhood under the hood of my F100 and late nights in the garage, I have to take this moment to thank my dad for teaching me all that I have learned through it all. And to all the parents reading this, if your sons or daughters ever have the opportunity to build a car or truck or any kind of build, push them into it. It’s not only learning about auto mechanics but it’s about math and physics and strength of materials and grasping skills like welding, cutting, threading, bending, fitting, machining and most of all discipline and appreciation. These are things that many people go to school for many years to attempt to learn. I have to say thank you Dad for being my tuition free university.

MAF VS SPEED DENSITY TUNING DAVE McCLAIN
MAF Disadvantages:
Modern GM vehicles are equipped with a MAF (mass airflow sensor) and a MAP (mass air pressure sensor). These are two different sensors which in turn are able to help the car’s computer in determining how much fuel is needed for a certain amount of airflow. GM utilizes both the MAF and MAP sensors amongst a number of other sensors to determine the amount of fuel that is required by the engine at different operating parameters. A few key sensors are ECT (engine coolant temperature), IAT (intake air temperature), TP (throttle position sensor), and RPM. The computer determines proper fueling in milliseconds based on a variety of sensors.
1. Sensitive to changes in the intake track. 2. Can become contaminated and give false readings. 3. Sensitive to reversion with large camshafts. 4. Limits on ultimate performance. They can only
determined the density of the air, the computer looks up based on rpm and manifold pressure a predetermined amount of expected air. This look up table is called a Volumetric Efficiency table. This table is a 3D table with engine rpm on one axis and manifold pressure on the other axis. The percentages in the table represent how much airflows at each break point based on a calculation of the engine at 100% efficiency. In a naturally
The MAF sensor measures the mass of airflow usually in grams of air. They are usually located in the intake track between the air filter and throttle body opening. GM uses a frequency based “cold wire” sensor that generates a signal between 0 and 15,000 hertz. As air flows past the sensor it cools the wire and generates reading to the PCM. The MAF sensor is calibrated by GM to the size of intake and flow of air thru the intake track. MAF Advantages: 1. Relatively easy to tune. 2. If the MAF sensor is calibrated properly, fueling is more constant for minor modifications.
read so much airflow.
3. The MAF sensor will also be more consistent calibration as the engine wears or in extreme environment changes.
Speed Density systems calculate the density of the air by measuring the temperature of the inlet air and measuring the pressure. Having
aspirated engine depending on a lot of factors an engine has changes in efficiency at low engine speeds to high speeds. This can all be calculated based on the engine at 100% efficiency, which

The Tool Consignment® Stores sell new, used and re-furbished tools and equipment for homeowners, tradesmen, builders and manufacturers. Everything from hammers to milling machines pass through our doors. Plumbers, electricians, painters, auto mechanics and all other trades find great deals daily on tools for much less then the cost of buying new. All our tools are tested and work properly. SO why pay the high cost of a new tool when you can get a guaranteed used tool for sometimes half the cost.
Speed Density Disadvantages:
We get many of the tools we sell from our customers who come in with perfectly good tools they no longer need and we sell them for them on a consignment basis. So if you have tools languishing in your garage or basement that you haven’t used in years bring them in and we’ll tell you what they are worth. Call Brian at 508-235-1006. He will be happy to talk with you. We also evaluate estates and will buy out entire workshops in the appropriate circumstances.
3. No potential for MAF fouling errors.
1. A little more difficult to tune. 2. Relies on a well-tuned VE Table. 3. Requires re-tuning for engine modifications. 4. May have errors during changing weather conditions. Both tuning methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Most modern GM vehicles use a blended system. GM computers use a MAF sensors primarily in the tune to determine the proper airflow, but under certain conditions they will refer to a speed density VE table. This normally happens in sudden changes in throttle position where the MAF readings might become erroneous. The Speed Density system is a backup for the MAF. Basically GM maintains a VE tables for safety reasons. It double checks the MAF, if the computer sees a potential error it will use the VE calculation. If the readings are off because of a failed or damaged MAF sensor, the engine will continue to run without

Car Show Nights! May 11 - Aug 31 issue and pop up a check engine light to alert you to the MAF failure. When I tune a customer’s cars for simple modifications like a cold air intake or a cat-back exhaust system, I don’t have to really make any changes to the VE tables. For small changes in airflow a basic MAF sensor tune is sufficient. On the other hand, anytime a vehicles camshaft is changed, headers, superchargers or turbochargers are added to a vehicle, the VE tables and MAF tables must be tuned for the engine’s new Volumetric Efficiency. If the MAF sensor fails, it could lead to a lean condition and potential blown engine. Sudden throttle changes can also lead to a lean conditions until the computer gets a stable MAF reading. I have retuned several supercharged vehicles which were supplied with a hand held tuners for their specific application. All of these hand held tuners only tuned the MAF sensor tables and didn’t touch the VE tables. Most tuners today fail to tune the VE Tables due to the extra time it takes.

OUTLAW RUN (ABOUT THE BOOK)
JIM WEICHERDING
tory restrictor plates reducing horsepower in any vehicle newer than 1976 that has more than 220 horses under the hood other than municipal and emergency vehicles.
Believe it, or not, the original storyline for the book OUTLAW RUN was penned to paper back in the early 90’s by Jim Weicherding who at the time owned a jet black 1969 GTO with a power plant motor. This muscle car was brutal. At 40 miles an hour on a roll, one touch of the gas pedal towards the placemat broke the rear tires as if the car was rolling backwards instead of cruisin’ forward.
There is a personal storyline integrated into OUTLAW RUN that pits a bad cop with a major authority malfunction and a guy who just wants his life to be the way it was before the government stuck their noses into it with regulations and constant restrictions. The government just keeps taking and not giving anything back. He is tired of the day-to-day struggles to survive, the endless battles with family members that tell him to stop chasing dreams and come down to earth and then on top of that he loses his rights to drive his beloved muscle car on the street anymore. No more car shows, cruise nights and those rides down those long winding back roads of New England during the spring, summer and fall seasons. He is angry, frustrated and finally decides to make a statement with miles of burnt rubber and a “catch me if you can” attitude towards the government. The new ban on classic cars and trucks includes anyone caught driving their vehicle on the road is subject to stiff fines, loss of license and total destruction of their classic by means of crushing in any local salvage yard. It’s gone! Period!
Passerby’s would give thumbs up signs and outward fists for power gestures as this beast rolled past them in the opposite direction. It was a strong contender on Friday and Saturday Nights on Walnut Hill where every muscle car, hot rod, big bad truck and Harley’s for miles around would converge at the Jack-In-The-Box parking lot to challenge each other to a drag race. This 1969 Pontiac GTO was the car to beat and everybody knew it. They all came looking to put the power plant Pontiac in its place. In the more than two years of drag races from that fast food parking lot to the water tower at the end of the road that never happened. OUTLAW RUN Paperback Book is all about those days of drag racing at the drag strip and all those car shows. And I do mean car shows. That GTO was the beast attraction and everyone would practically break their necks attempting to get a look at that engine under the hood that never
was opened at these car shows and cruise nights. I would say, “You wanna see what I am packing under the hood then drop to the ground and look up through my fender wells or under my radiator support housing.” That hood never opened when there was an audience around. OUTLAW RUN is about a muscle car, but it’s about so much more than that. It’s about our rights to drive classic cars and trucks on America’s roadways without prejudice or interference from the government. OUTLAW RUN’s premise is about the government banning vehicles manufactured prior to 1976 from road use and about restricting other vehicles with manda-
The OUTLAW GTO is not only the fastest street car in the region, it’s now the fastest illegal street car on the road anywhere. And to make matters worse for law enforcement, one of the best road course drivers and drag racers in the region is the one piloting this mean machine across the area at maximum overdrive, breakneck speeds. OUTLAW RUN is a great read and it doesn’t take very long to get from front cover to back cover and it was written that way on purpose. The paperback book fits neatly into any glove compartment, or even above any vehicle visor for those car shows and cruise nights. It takes approximately an hour, or so, to read the entire book depending on how many distractions you are confronted with at those venues. With the holidays upon us this would be a great inexpensive gift idea, or even a stocking stuffer. This is exactly the book for those family members and friends that love classic cars and trucks and reading about them. The OUTLAW GTO is the feature muscle car ride in the story but there are all types of cool cars and trucks and even Harley’s integrated into the storyline. It is a car guy and a car girl book. Anyone who is an enthusiast of these era vehicles and the car show and cruise night scene will love this story and the unique premise and storyline plot. It’s a feel good story about one man, one real fast muscle car GTO and his adventures eluding the police with an ending you will never see coming until you are there. It’s all about loss and what one man can do to overcome that loss with a rebel spirit and a will to escape the government’s stronghold on us all. “They gotta catch OUTLAW to scrap OUTLAW!” Buckle Up! Because it’s one helluva ride!!! To contact the Author of OUTLAW RUN The Book you can reach him directly at his e-mail, jwpisces14@aol.com

He drives his GTO slowly down the back road until he comes to a clearing by a small pond beyond the thick wood line of trees and bushes and turns the classic muscle car off. He just sits there looking up at the sky through the top of his windshield. “Now what do I do?”

12 VOLT NEWS Bluetooth for Car Audio
GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR. A Custom Car Stereo Center
A Custom Car Stereo Center carries in-dash car stereo receivers and in-dash video/navigation decks from Alpine & Pioneer that have Bluetooth built in for both hands free cell phone use and streaming audio use i.e. getting my music from my cell phone to play on my car stereo. For original equipment radio systems, we offer Parrot brand Bluetooth systems which can be special ordered and added to your factory stereo system to give the same performance and functionality as our other systems. WHAT IS BLUETOOTH? Bluetooth is a short range wireless communications format that enables devices such as Bluetooth equipped cell phones and car stereos to talk with each other. The devices will automatically recognize each other after they have been “paired” or set up. This requires a car receiver with either Bluetooth built in or an additional Bluetooth adapter added. When you get into your vehicle, the car receiver with Bluetooth will automatically see and recognize your phone as long as it is turned on. It can still be in your pocket or purse. When a call comes in, it rings over the car stereo speakers. You answer by pressing a button on the screen or Bluetooth device. You can hear the caller through the vehicle speakers. You talk and your voice is picked up by the Bluetooth microphone. You do not need to touch your phone. The caller i.d information appears across the radio screen. You can make calls hands-free through voice recognition as long as your phone supports this feature. Just say the name and your phone will automatically dial. Any music playing will be muted so you can hear the caller through the car speakers and the caller can hear you just by your normal talking. Also, Bluetooth offers a hands free, no cables, music transfer protocal, called A2DP or Streaming Audio, that will automatically send your music to your car radio from your Smart Phone, cell phone or Mp3 player, so you can listen to your music in your car through your car speakers without connection any cables! Your phone or Mp3 player is recognized automatically when you enter the vehicle and you have the option of instructing your car radio to receive your smart phone, cell phone, or Mp3 player music as a source for you to listen to, just like deciding to play a CD or listen to a radio station. For this to work it is necessary that the car stereo has the A2DP format built into it or you must add a Bluetooth receiver to your car stereo. Many Bluetooth equipped car stereos have the streaming audio feature built in. We can demonstrate this for you in our store using your phone and one of the A2DP Bluetooth enabled
car stereos we have on display. They are available in all brands. Will Bluetooth work with any radio or any cell phone? The Bluetooth format for hands free phone use in your vehicle requires two things. 1. A Bluetooth equipped cell phone, which most now are. 2. A car radio with Bluetooth reception capability built-in that will pair to your cell phone. Many newer car stereos we sell today have this feature built-in and are on display in our store in every brand. For other car stereos that are “Bluetooth ready” the optional manufacturer’s Bluetooth adapter must be added. We carry some of these
1. If your car stereo has the A2DP Bluetooth builtin and your music is on your cell phone and your phone has Bluetooth, there is nothing you need to buy. You’re done. 2. If you have a car radio with no Bluetooth, but your radio has an auxiliary audio input, you must purchase an aftermarket Bluetooth transmitter and receiver kit (available on line) for your iPod , cell phone or Mp3 player. The Bluetooth Receiver must be plugged into the auxiliary input of the car radio and it will receive the streaming audio from your cell phone and convert it into an auxiliary audio input source for the car radio. You can then listen to your music on your car speakers without having to connect any

adapters in stock. The adapter includes a microphone. The radio display serves as the cell phone screen, showing phone number, caller i.d. info, and in some cases text messages. For factory or original equipment radios, an aftermarket Bluetooth kit can be added. These vary a lot in price and functionality. The most deluxe kits require professional installation which we can provide. These Bluetooth car kits will completely interface with your existing factory system to mute the car speakers when a call comes in and also allow you to make calls hands-free with voice commands as long as your cell phone supports these features. The visual information – text messages, caller i.d. and phone number – appear on a separate small display installed on the dash in the vehicle. Can I add Bluetooth Streaming Audio (A2DP) to my existing car stereo? Yes!
cables between the radio and your music source. If you have Pandora Radio or similar on your smart phone, you can stream this audio into your car stereo. 3. If your car radio does not have an auxiliary input, it may be just as cheap to change out your car radio for a new one with input capabilities, rather than buy the expensive Bluetooth adapters that need professional installation. Check with us, we can help, advise you based on your car and your radio.

It is not unusual for a Chevrolet to undoubtedly take the cake and chivalrously knock out opponents of its near stature ranging from mild to wild competitions. The prime example of such a classic would be a beautifully monstrous powered 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle owned by none other than Chris Aquino. Having the vehicle since the age of eighteen, Chris knows the ins and outs of this spectacular machine which not only has the fine looks of a speed queen, but the performance behind it as well. This ride originally came to him as the typical “grandma” version of Chevelle, having the standard six cylinder with the three speed on the column. It was a pure gold on gold, headed nowhere fast until Chris would start wrenching on it. With a lot of dedication and some help from colleagues, Chris would have a life time of track passes and engine changes developing into the machine he holds now. This speed machine carries a dart engine block with aluminum heads, steel crank, rods, and the works. Not only is this a great engine meshed with Holley carburetors to make some power passes, but mounted on top is a 6-71 Weiand supercharger that is adding some ponies to the mix. This beast sits on a 4 link suspension rolling with fat Hoosier tires, and is fired with by an MSD ignition set up and aftermarket electric fuel pump. Chris is going to feel his body shift back into his Corbeau GT racing seats as he breaks in the engine for the first time this year at New England Dragway. This car will surely shine and stand out with its custom purple paint color that also is a blend of silver and black metallic flake. To say that this car is ordinary is not for the faint of heart as it holds a special sentimental value in Mr. Aquino’s heart. On his back side windows you will see a Chevy sticker on either side in honor of his late girlfriend Brenda who spent many years beside Chris and his valiant ride. While Chris’ passion is pure American Muscle, he also spends time performing maintenance on and fixing others’ vehicles at his garage “C & J Automotive Repair in Warwick, Rhode Island. He originally became a car enthusiast when he and his brother Frank started buying and selling cars years back until he decided that he wanted to take it to the next level and help others by diagnosing problems and coming up with affordable solutions. BARN
Tony Jarvis’ 1966 Mustang ED YESSAIAN One of my favorite parts of talking to the racers at New England Dragway is learning the history of their car and the series of transformations that the
car has gone through to get to where it is today. Being a Mustang guy, it isn’t a surprise to many of our readers that I’ve always spoken of Tony Jarvis’ 1966 Mustang Fastback as one of my favorites in the Outlaw 10.50 class. But according to Tony,
the car wasn’t always in the tip-top track terrorizing condition that it is today. Actually, when Tony found the car, in a barn, in November of 1981, it needed a complete restoration from the ground up.

RN FIND FASTBACK Tony scored the car for a measly 500.00 and spent over 2 years going through it, with his goal being that he wanted to make a factory GT K-Code clone. The car was original a C-Code 289/2 barrel but eventually got a heart transplant in the form of a 302 Mexican truck block with a 289 Hypo crank and Boss 302 rods, TRW pistons, and ported and polished heads. A rebuilt C4 transmission with shift kit and a Ford nine inch rear end completed the pretty stout driveline. Tony’s original intentions were to make the car a “show car” but eventually, he made that life changing trip to the drag strip that changed his life forever. On his way to the track, he encountered a bit of a mishap with his trailer and had to use the guardrail to stop himself from spinning out of control or into oncoming traffic. Even after that horrible encounter, he still arrived at the track and ran 13.50’s all night. Shortly after that evening, Tony had the bodywork repaired and the car was put away in a storage container for over 20 years. As marriage and family probably distracted Tony for some of the time away from his fastback, I’m sure it wasn’t completely out of his mind. Then one day, the late Bob Pucell of C&E Racing learned that the car existed and made Tony an offer on the car that he seriously considered. Luckily, Tony has
days of drag racing all coming back to him, he went out and grabbed a set of slicks and started his return with a couple 13.0’s. Eventually Tony recruited 2014 Super Pro Champion Ray Knight to build a killer 331ci engine that won dozens of races in the Fast Street segment of Outlaw 10.50. (That particular engine now lives on in my own 1994 Mustang, thanks to Tony’s EXTREMELY GENEROUS nature). With the 331 out of the engine bay, Tony’s Fastback went on to bigger and better things, in the name of a Shafiroff 363ci power-plant , topped with AFR Renegade heads and backed by a nearly indestructible C4 from Anthony Apuzzo at Accurate Transmissions of New Haven, CT (203-5893306). That set-up was good for mid-9 second slips on rear leaf springs, with some pretty impressive 1.39 sixty-foot times. (There was also that 1.42 sixty-foot that happened on just the rear tires). It’s hard to believe that Tony almost let this car go, but as of now the only place it is going is to the winner’s circle. an awesome wife that convinced him he would regret letting the car go. Tony decided he would keep the car, after Ellie talked some sense into him.
With the car now fresh in his mind and his
For 2016 Tony was pushing to move up into the 9.50 Super Street division of Outlaw 10.50 and the car should be more than capable of accomplishing that. I joked with him that if he stays in 10.50 he would have to face me, with his own motor in my car, but he laughed and said, “Bring it on”.

Boy, am I glad winter is over and done with for another year. Why? Because it’s springtime in New England! Another season of flashy classic cars and trucks coming out of their garages and out from under those protective body wraps to once again get the dust wiped off the glossy paints and chrome and head out to all of the car shows and cruise nights across the region. The containers of car wax, tire and wheel cleaners, interior cleansing solutions followed by window and glass cleaners all finding their way to these beautiful machines before they hit the roadways headed to destinations unknown. I would bet an iced coffee and a muffin most of them will be heading out to a cruise event somewhere with happy owners and passengers sometime soon. Personally, I love this time of year and I love classic cars and trucks. I especially love MUSCLE CARS! Bring ‘em on! Everyone of them. Pontiac, Chevy, Mopar and yes, even the Fords, have a place in the heart of a real car guy. You can have your favorites, but they all deserve some respect across the board no matter which vehicle make, or model you prefer. Do you have a favorite vehicle make and model?
Of course you do. So do I. I LOVE GM Vehicles. Pontiac and Chevy are my preferred classic vehicle of choice and even my newer vehicle of choice. Do you have a favorite car show or cruise night in New England? Me too. A&W in Smithfield, RI comes to mind first with a cruise night every Tuesday Night with Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer playing the crowds favorite oldies and classic rock songs over the loud speakers, but there are many more I love to attend: Denny’s Cruise Night in Johnston, RI every Thursday Night with the Johnston Street Machines Car Club with Rich George cranking out the tunes, Mc Donald’s Friday Night Cruise in
There are many more out there I cannot fit into this article but if you would like to be added to this year’s The SAFE And The SERIOUS Car Show Calendar of Events please send your information to me directly @ jwpisces14@aol. com with TSATS Car Show Calendar Listing in the Subject Box and I will make sure that you are added to that events venue calendar listing featured every month in this publication for all of our readers. See you at a Car Show and Cruise Night somewhere soon. “Buckle Up!” Jim ETCH Weicherding

A common hydroscopic fluid that would cause quite a conundrum is brake fluid. When brake fluid absorbs moisture, the boiling point of the fluid becomes lower and will cause the fluid to compress less. Moisture within your braking system will give the fluid the ability to limit your braking power, and in turn rust out your brake lines and all necessary hardware and components. Being a New Englander during the winter months will accelerate your fluid’s water-sucking habits and this is why it is discourage to keep larger containers on your garage shelf. BOOSTED: THE LOW DOWN ON OCTANE BOOSTERS Lauryn “Hotwheels” Pontiac-Vernancio
when handling these.
Spring time is here and that means for a serious spring cleaning! It’s time to get your projects rolling “turn-key” and have your machines running in tip-top shape. It seems way past due to make sure that your horsepower driven enterprise holds all the power that was promised or should be capable of producing. One way to give your automobile a little more boost is to use the quick art of adding an octane booster. Bottled octane boosters that can be purchased at local auto parts stores will absolutely raise the octane in your gasoline which will in turn yield better overall vehicle performance.
4.) Ethanol – Ethanol is used on most race cars to bring the most in octane performance. One thing to keep in mind is that ethanol has a different stoichiometric ratio to petrol, which will ultimately cause your engine to run a bit leaner. Using more than a 10 percent mix of ethanol would come with a recommendation of a tune of your vehicle for fuel. Also, running any more than a 50 percent mixture will require larger injectors and would definitely hit the pocket for gasoline consumption! Keep in mind that ethanol does attract water, so if the car is going to stand longer
So what is the trick to octane boosters? Well the chemicals inside of the booster of course! Just a small bit of octane booster can in fact cause a bit of significance in raising the octane of your fuel within the active ingredients. The additives to these boosters contain “anti-knock” ingredients which prevent “knock” which is the detonation of pre-ignition of your car’s system. By preventing knock, the octane of the fuel level is hereby raised while giving your vehicle a slight boost in performance. There are genuinely four types of octane booster bases:
1.) MMT – MMT (Methycyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl) which is used in refineries worldwide to help raise the octane of fuel as an alternation to lead however it is not harmful to use in emission control devices. This ingredient is found in most better than normal quality octane boosters. 2.) Ferrocene – Ferrocene is a made of an iron compound that is cheaper than MMT and is also used as an alternative to lead at most fuel refineries within primarily third world countries. The only complication of this blend is that the Iron Oxide which is formed during combustion becomes highly abrasive which provides a massive increase in engine wear long term which ultimately shortens engine life and causes easier spark plug build up.
