A Sandahl Family Reunion in the Winner’s Circle

It’s been a couple of months since the 2022 racing season came to a close at New England Dragway. This year had its ups and downs but honestly turned out to be proof that good things are on the horizon with new Race Director Rhett Gardner “at the wheel”. Track prep was definitely on point which led to many new personal bests as well as much more consistent runs in the bracket and index series such as the Outlaw 10.50 class. This year the Outlaw class had a few new faces, with quite a few of them making appearances in the Winner’s Circle. With five indexes being contested, here are your 2022 Outlaw 10.50 Champions…

TRUE STREET 12.50- With three wins and four runner-up finishes, there was no one that was going to beat Steve George to the Championship podium this year. Everyone’s favorite guy, Jeremy Young

finished closely behind Steve George and looks to take over the top

spot in 2023.

REAL STREET 11.50- This was a battle from the first day to the last with Trevor Sirois leading the pack for most of the season before he had to bow out with a blown engine. Patty DeCastro made a very impressive showing as well, finishing in the #2 spot, but it was once again the man they call FIREBALL, Ralph Blackburn on top, successfully defending his crown.

FAST STREET 10.50- The legendary Ed Miller would take and early lead and never look back, with four wins on the season. Multi-time Champion Andy DeCastro would finish as runner up with another phenomenal showing. And Geno Picozzi would also make his name known with a couple wins to close out the season.

SUPER STREET 9.50- There was no question here that it was going to be “Back to Back to Back” Jack Sandahl. After missing the first race, Sandahl would win four straight and a total of five races. Michelle Sanford would finish Runner Up and could very likely be the Champion in 2023!!

WILD STREET 8.50- Despite a rumored “Flea problem” around his trailer, Jon Sandahl would keep his eye on the prize with 3 wins on the season with one of those the same week as his son Jack who will be joining Wild Street in 2023. Look for a handful of Sandahl vs Sandahl finals in the 2023 season!!

model you may have been confused. As an example if you ask for a Mustang you may be shown an electric SUV. If you ask to look at a Supra you’ll find new BMW Z Type. That’s just the tip of the iceberg and more are on the way. Cars that carry the title of a famous model, usually fueled by nostalgia and cult like brand following from young kids that in most cases have never experienced the original vehicle. To understand it we need to go back to the beginning of the retro craze and see how it derailed.

In 1997 Chrysler had an interesting idea. They wanted to take a step back in time and build a car people wouldn’t expect, but would love. A car that would take them back in time. In 1997 they introduced the Prowler, a T-Bucket looking roadster under the Plymouth and Chrysler badge. It made a miserable 214 horsepower from a V6 and an unassuming 0 – 60 mph of 7.2 seconds, but media praised it as a great move forward. It suffered from low sales and mechanical issues producing only 11,702 examples in its 4 year run (it wasn’t produced in 1998). Although it is considered a failure, it brought a good deal of attention and it did set a fire under manufacturers to see where it could go.

Still believing they were onto something, in 1999 the Dodge Charger concept was un-

better producing 24,112 trucks, but it would be Ford that took the ball and ran. Ford would not be left behind and in 2002 they tried their hand at retro with the Thunderbird. The Thunderbird was an aged and tired model and the retro look was in hopes to refresh it and really dig those nostalgia roots. It packed a V8 engine and the looks really felt like a faithful futuristic version of the first generation models. It sold 70,000 cars and critics gleaned that was low due to a poor market. If the Prowler was the fire, the Thunderbird was the fuel. It was also the swan song for the Thunderbird, so Ford needed something else to retro.

Enter the Ford Mustang. A car that didn’t suffer from poor sales. It didn’t come with baggage like the previous models. It was a ripe fruit for a new idea powered by nostalgia. This wasn’t just going to be a reface either. The plan was to make it with the same styling of older popular models while upgrading performance to match, a thought that permeated petrol heads since the dawn of the automobile.

The retro Mustang arrived in 2005 and was a resounding success. Now everyone wanted to copy the formula. Take a retro name, build a new body, throw as much horsepower as you

horsepower mark, no tuning necessary, and buyers ate it up like kids in a candy store. Alas all good things come to an end and, as the ‘20s rolled around, it appeared the gas powered car was beginning to upset some people and they wanted to do away with the internal combustion engine, or ICE as they called it, once and for all. Tesla was gaining market share, EVs were being adopted by buyers, and the question arose among lawmakers on one side of the table that if Tesla could do it, why couldn’t everyone (be forced to adopt electric cars). In 2015 the EPA bought into the idea that our planet was about to burst into flames and started clamping down on powerful cars like they were still running on lead. China enacted legislation threatening to ban anything that ran on gas. California started banning anything that had what they considered dangerous products and car companies were being told they had to switch to electric, more environmentally friendly, cars whether they were ready or not. As more and more states began to threaten to cancel internal combustion in new cars outright, the car companies needed billions of dollars to invest in new technology that they literally didn’t have if they planned to stay afloat. Take into account that it takes 6

vehicle and they had 10 years total to figure it out or be told they no longer were allowed to sell their cars, you can see how serious the situation was. They mothballed vehicles overnight and started to hedge funds for a coming market that had failed in every attempt prior. While mothballing cars, they needed the cars they did have to sell like burgers at a fast food restaurant to give them the influx of cash. Not only was it a production feat, but a marketing feat as well.

What’s really sad about this new trajectory it is pointed solely at young adults that never lived in that age of nostalgia. They live in the age of social media, the age of Tik Tok where movies try and pretend to be older, better stories but instead force a social message to a group that has the attention span measured in seconds. This new age lives off of hype and name recognition and they’ll buy into it and recite the edict of Instagram Reels. It’s all about the nostalgia, but it’s all just pretend. They’re

It’s not that old people are being stubborn either. You’ll find a large group of purists that think the same way. These purist will say if you want that computer controlled thing then build it with its own name. Make it yours. How do you change the minds of the human race in 10 years? The plan was simple. Make the new thinking a part of the history of the vehicle even if that history didn’t exist prior. What better way to do that, but to pick up the existing nostalgic they’d been milking for the past 20 years and just continue to repeat the process for newer vehicles and why not, it was already working.

Suddenly, it was design whatever you can, find what the people are begging for and simply slap the nostalgia sticker on it. The Toyota 86, the Toyota Supra, the Mustang Mach-E, even the legendary Lamborghini Countach got a rewrite even after Lam borghini said retro wasn’t something they wanted to em brace. Throw in some SUVs for flavor. If it fits, its ships! Why make a new car when you can put an electric engine in an old muscle car and make fake engine noises with speakers.

Anything they can to shake the marketing tree loose and find out what falls out while pretending that A.I. art of Mona Lisa is just as valuable as the original. All the while getting closer and closer to the automotive cliff. Imagine headed toward a waterfall in your new plastic barrel as you see your soon to be competition EV stock start to tank over the side. Suddenly all those consultants that said it was paranoia seem out of touch as the edge looms ever closer. To you, it’s all too real.

fooled because it’s nostalgia they’ve never experienced. As they look back to, dare I say, a better time? While old timers adamantly reject this change some young adults buy into the marketing and ask, “What is so different?”

The answer to that question is everything. The age we grew up in was steel and durable. Today’s age is plastic and disposable. We spent time under our hood with wrenches and bolts and today you spend money on smart phones to record street take-overs. Our groups know every facet of how their vehicle runs and as of this writing only 18% of U.S. licensed drivers

and bastardizing them and justifying it in the name of sales. It has to at least try to adhere to the foundation that created it. Truth is, they don’t even care if it’s faster. They don’t buy into the YouTube “influencer” that cheers when the electric car outruns their favorite ride to 100 feet. What’s worse is the divide that separated tuners and muscle cars will be so detached from electric and hybrids that you’ll need a space shuttle to conquer it if this stays the course.

There is still hope though. Some are still sticking to the original formula. Recently released, the Nissan 400Z is a 400 horsepower twin

even know how to drive stick shift. What car guys don’t realize is there’s a chasm of difference between the term automotive enthusiast and social media clout chaser. What happens when tuning is little more than plugging up a computer and hacking an ECU to go faster?

It’s not far-fetched to move into an age when the computer in your car is controlled directly at the factory to prevent you from hacking it under the guise of safety. Truth is, it’s already happening. When that happens we are no

turbo V6 that Datsun fans are excited to see it deliver on the nostalgia they’ve been craving. It even comes with an optional manual transmission. If you want to take some nostalgia and follow that formula, by all means we’ll be here. But if the goal is to repackage our favorite ride as a plastic plug-in mess to meet the needs of the environment, sorry, we’re not following the status quo, or some social media influencer. We’ve already decided for ourselves… and the answer is no.

TORQUE CONVERTER TECH

Many customers seem to try a few torque converters before they find one that is fully optimized to their particular motor combination. People tend to choose based on stall speed which is an important aspect of any torque converter, but they might miss the mark getting the best performing torque converter for their particular set up. The overall slip of a converter can make or break you. If a converter slips too much you will not pull hard in top gears at the end of the quarter mile. Your elapsed time may decrease but your mile per hour will also be lowered. Excessive slip causes higher transmission fluid temperatures which can lead to transmission failures, especially on non lock up converters. Recently I had a customer who had a basic B+M 2400 rpm converter for his 383 Super Ram L98 Corvette in for a tune. The additional cubic inches, Super Ram Intake Manifold, AFR 195 Cylinder heads , and Mild Comp 503 Cam produced some serious low and mid range torque. The 2400 Converter he choose worked decently for a short time and eventually failed in his set up. It was never designed for the additional torque being thrown at it. After all it was designed for a 350 cubic inch engine. The customer decided to buy an FTI 3000 rpm converter that was “tailored” to his set up. Even with all the specs on the motor given, his new converter seemed to be very inefficient. The new converter didn’t seem to grab and hold to almost 4600 rpm. His motor makes maximum torque around 4500 rpm and his new torque converter allows his motor to slip too much, not allowing him to take advantage of his mid-range torque. Due to the excessive slip he also lost a lot of top rpm HP. His old 2400 rpm converter did a much better job of getting the torque and HP to the wheels. He lost about 31 peak HP not to mention a completely lowered torque / HP curve. Most converter companies offer a free restall, but that kinda sucks to have to pull the transmission again and swap converters.

There are many factors that affect overall stall speed. The key ones are engine torque production, camshaft design, gear box ratios, rear end ratios, and weight of the vehicle. I always to try to stay conservative on stall speed. Many companies will miss the mark when is comes to bigger cubic inch motors. A sign of a good converter is top end slip.

If the FTI was down 5 HP up top over the B+M 2400, I would say the new converter would perform decently at the track. The fact that the new converter wasn’t in the ball park of stall speed shows it wasn’t designed for the torque output. The converter should have been able to grab this motor by 3000 – 3200 rpm and have minimal losses throughout the rest of the power band. The new converter may have

a better elapsed time and traction advantage but will probably be down on mph by the end of the quarter mile.

Over the years, I have had good luck with Precision Industries, Yank, and Pro Torque converters in Street/Street set ups. They are a little more expensive and some offer a free re-stall option to better dial in the converter.

On June 29, 1956, President Dwight Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956. The bill created a 41,000-mile “National System of Interstate and Defense Highways” that would, according to Eisenhower, eliminate unsafe roads, inefficient routes, traffic jams and all of the other things that got in the way of “speedy, safe transcontinental travel.” At the same time, highway advocates argued, “in case of atomic attack on our key cities, the road net [would] permit quick evacuation of target areas.” For all of these reasons, the 1956 law declared that the construction of an elaborate expressway system was “essential to the national interest.”

“THE LAST CALL OF THE WILD”

Today, there are more than 250 million cars and trucks in the United States, or almost one per person. At the end of the 19th century, by contrast, there was just one motorized vehicle on the road for every 18,000 Americans. At the same time, most of those roads were made not of asphalt or concrete but of packed dirt (on good days) or mud. Under these circumstances, driving a motorcar was not simply a way to get from one place to another: It was an adventure. Outside cities and towns, there were almost no gas stations or even street signs, and rest stops were unheard-of. “Automobiling,” said the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper in 1910, was “the last call of the wild.”

A NATION OF DRIVERS

This was about to change. In 1908, Henry Ford introduced the Model T, a dependable, affordable car that soon found its way into many American garages. By 1927, the year that Ford stopped making this “Tin Lizzie,” the company had sold nearly 15 million of them. At the same time, Ford’s competitors had followed its lead and begun building cars for everyday people. “Automobiling” was no longer an adventure or a luxury: It was a necessity.

A nation of drivers needed good roads, but building good roads was expensive. Who would pay the bill? In most cities and towns, mass transit–streetcars, subways, elevated trains–was not truly “public” transportation. Instead, it was usually built and operated by private companies that made enormous infrastructural investments in exchange for long-term profits. However, automobile interests–such as car companies, tire manufacturers, gas station owners and suburban developers–hoped to convince state and local governments that roads were a public concern. That way, they could get the infrastructure they needed without spending any of their own money. Their campaign was successful: In many places, elected officials agreed to use taxpayer money for the improvement and construction of roads. In most cases, before 1956 the federal government split the cost of roadbuilding with the states. (One exception was the New Deal, when

federal agencies like the Public Works Administration and the Works Progress Administration put people to work building bridges and parkways.) However, this funding arrangement did not get roads built fast enough to please the most ardent highway advocates.

THE BIRTH OF THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM

Among these was the man who would become President, Army General Dwight D. Eisenhower. During World War II, Eisenhower had been stationed in Germany, where he had been impressed by the network of high-speed roads known as the Reichsautobahnen. After he became president in 1953, Eisenhower was determined to build the highways that lawmakers had been talking about for years. For instance, the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1944 had authorized the construction of a 40,000-mile “National System of Interstate Highways” through and between the nation’s cities, but offered no way to pay for it.

THE FEDERAL-AID HIGHWAY ACT OF 1956

It took several years of wrangling, but a new Federal-Aid Highway Act passed in June 1956. The law authorized the construction of a 41,000-mile network of interstate highways that would span the nation. It also allocated $26 billion to pay for them. Under the terms of the law, the federal government would pay 90 percent of the cost of expressway construction. The money came from an increased gasoline tax–now 3 cents a gallon instead of 2–that went into a non-divertible Highway Trust Fund.

The new interstate highways were controlled-access expressways with no at-grade crossings–that is, they had overpasses and underpasses instead of intersections. They were at least four lanes wide and were designed for high-speed driving. They were intended to serve several purposes: eliminate traffic congestion; replace what one highway advocate called “undesirable slum areas” with pristine ribbons of concrete; make coast-to-coast transportation more efficient; and make it easy to get out of big cities in case of an atomic attack.

THE HIGHWAY REVOLT

When the Interstate Highway Act was first passed, most Americans supported it. Soon, however, the unpleasant consequences of all that roadbuilding began to show. Most unpleasant of all was the damage the roads were inflicting on the city neighborhoods in their path. They displaced people from their homes, sliced communities in half and led to abandonment and decay in city after city.

People began to fight back. The first victory for the anti-road forces took place in San Francisco, where in 1959 the Board of Supervisors stopped the construction of the double-decker Embarcadero Freeway along the waterfront. During the 1960s, activists in New York City, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., New Orleans and other cities managed to prevent roadbuilders from eviscerating their neighborhoods. (As a result, numerous urban interstates end abruptly; activists called these the “roads to nowhere.”)

In many cities and suburbs, however, the

highways were built as planned. All told, the Interstate Highway System is more than 46,000 miles long.

A GARAGE THAT’S REALLY THE PERFECT MAN CAVE

So, as you may or may not know, Motorhead did an article on my Dart last year. If you didn’t see the article, long story short I sold this very car over 20 years ago to get married and start a family. Fast forward to last year, with a huge push and help from my wife, we found the car and were able to purchase it.

About 6 months later, I blew the transmission doing stupid things, lol. I found one and started the process of replacing it. We had a garage but no heat or anything like that. After my wife saw me struggling and freezing putting the transmission in, she said that I need a real garage to complete the hobby. Well, here it is.

Built by A.C. Carpentry, the garage is 16 foot x 24 foot with 12 foot ceilings, because she said I need a lift. It’s all wired up for a lift already. Fully insulated and heated. I am able to display all my old vintage oil cans and other nostalgic automotive stuff I have collected over the years. I have lots of pictures of my friends rides over the years dis played. There’s a 55-inch TV on the wall to watch those classic movies like Two Lane Blacktop and American Graffiti while wrenching on my Dart.

Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and noted for its gull-wing doors and brushed stainless-steel outer body panels, the sports car was also noted for a lack of power and performance incongruous with its looks and price. Though its production was short-lived, the DeLorean became widely known after it was featured as the time machine in the Back to the Future films.

With the first production car completed on January 21, 1981, the design incorporated numerous minor revisions to the hood, wheels and interior before production ended in late December 1982, shortly after DMC filed for bankruptcy and after total production reached about 9,000 units.

Despite the car having a reputation for poor build quality and an unsatisfactory driving experience, the DeLorean continues to have a strong following driven in part by the popularity of Back to the Future. 6,500 DeLoreans were estimated to still be on the road as of 2015.

HISTORY

When details surrounding the DeLorean were first announced in the mid-1970s, there were numerous plans and rumors that the DeLorean would have many advanced features, such as elastic reservoir moulding (ERM), a unit construction plastic chassis, a mid-engine layout, an airbag, 10-mph bumpers and ultrawide Pirelli P7 tires; none of these would materialize in the production vehicle.

Originally, the car was intended to have a centrally-mounted Wankel rotary engine. The engine selection was reconsidered when Comotor production ended and the favored engine became the Ford Cologne V6 engine.

Appearing in October 1976, the first prototype was completed by American automotive chief engineer William T. Collins, formerly chief engineer at Pontiac. The prototype was initially known as the DSV-1, or DeLorean Safety Vehicle. As development continued, the model was referred to as the DSV-12, before changing to DMC-12, the “12” deriving from the target list price of $12,000 upon release.

nault-Volvo) was selected. As a result, the engine location had to be moved from the mid-engined location in Prototype 1 to a rear-engined location in Prototype 2, a configuration which would be retained in the production vehicle.

The chassis was initially planned to use elastic reservoir moulding (ERM), which would lighten the car and lower its production costs. DeLorean had purchased patent rights to the essentially untested ERM technology, and it was eventually found unsuitable.

Prototype 1’s interior was significantly different from the production vehicle’s. Prototype 1 had a prominent full-width knee bar, as it was intended to be a safety car. A medium brown leather covered the seats, but they were much flatter and did not have the comfort and support of the production seats. A black steering wheel with a fat center was intended to hold an airbag and the driver had a full set of Stewart-Warner gauges. A central warning system would check various fluid levels and even warn of low brake pad thickness though, even at this time, it was suspected that production cars would not have this feature.

These and other changes to the original concept led to considerable schedule pressures. The design was deemed to require almost complete re-engineering, which was turned over to English engineer Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus Cars. Chapman replaced most of the unproven material and manufacturing techniques with those then employed by Lotus, including a steel backbone chassis.

In order to train the workforce, a small number of pre-production DeLoreans were produced with fiberglass bodies and are referred to as “black cars” or mules. After several delays and cost overruns, production at the Dunmurry factory, located a few miles from Belfast City Centre, finally began in late 1980. Around this time DMC officially dropped the name DMC-12 on its now $25,000 car in favor of the model name DeLorean. The DeLorean sports car, as it was described in advertisements, began production in December 1980 with the first production car rolling off the assembly line on January 21, 1981.

The DeLorean Motor Company was placed into receivership in February 1982 and filed bankruptcy on October 26 of that year, just a few

days after the arrest of its founder, John DeLorean, on drug trafficking charges. Consolidated International purchased the unsold DeLoreans and partially completed DeLoreans still on the assembly line and assembled approximately 100 cars to finish the remaining production on December 24, 1982.

SALES AND PRODUCTION

Prior to the release of the DeLorean, there was a waiting list of eager buyers, many of whom paid over MSRP. However, that exuberance subsided very quickly and production output soon far exceeded sales volume. October 1981 was the highest month of sales for DMC with 720 vehicles sold but by December, the US was falling into recession and interest rates were rising which further negatively impacted sales. Despite this, instead of reducing production, John DeLorean doubled production output, further adding to the inventory of unsold cars. By the end of 1981, DMC had produced 7,500 cars but had sold only 3,000. By this point, DMC was in a financial hardship having sold only 350 units in January 1982 and in February of that year, DMC was placed into receivership.

In February 1982, unsold 1981 model year cars were “priced for immediate clearance” in hopes to make room for the more expensive 1982 model year cars. In March, telegrams were sent to all 343 dealerships requesting each buy six cars to help save the company; none of the dealers responded with a sales order. By this point, dealers were si�ng on unsold inventory as were the quality assurance centers and hundreds more si�ng on the docks in Long Beach, California. By the end of May 1982, production at the factory was shut down. Another attempt in July 1982 was made to revive sales by offering discounts to dealerships and offering a 5-year/50,000-mile (80,000 km) warranty with the first year or 12,000-mile (19,000 km) portion secured by a major insurance carrier but this was not successful.

Bruce McWilliams, VP of Marketing for DMC and later acting President for DMC America, after resigning his position said, “The car could never be sold in the numbers John DeLorean predicted”.

Production

Production information was lost or scattered upon the shutdown of DMC and production figures for the DeLorean have never been verified based on official factory records. Despite some unexplained VIN gaps, based upon VIN information, owners have been able to piece together the approximate quantity of DeLoreans produced.

In February 1982, DMC was placed into receivership and the factory continued to operate at a reduced production rate until the end of May. When Consolidated International acquired the unsold and partially assembled cars in November 1982, it brought back workers to complete the cars remaining on the assembly line. It was decided to make the remaining completed 1982 model year cars into 1983 models. The remaining cars’ VINs were re-VINed into 1983 cars by taking the original VIN and adding 5000 to it and changing the “CD” in the middle of the VIN to “DD”

thus making a 1983 model. For the 1981 model year, there were 6,700 DeLoreans produced (VIN 500–7199). For the 1982 model year, there were 1,999 DeLoreans produced (VIN 10001–11999). For the 1983 model year, there were 276 DeLoreans (VIN 17000–17170 and 20001–20105) bringing the total estimated production to 8,975 cars.

Construction

The DeLorean features a number of unusual construction details, including gull-wing doors, unpainted stainless-steel body panels, and a rear-mounted engine.

Body

The gull-wing doors on the DeLorean were a distinctive feature. The body design of the DeLorean was a product of Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign. To create the car, Giugiaro drew on one of his previous works, the Porsche Tapiro, a concept car from 1970. The body is paneled in brushed SS304 austenitic stainless steel, and except for three cars plated in 24-karat gold, all DeLoreans left the factory uncovered by paint or clearcoat. Painted DeLoreans do exist, although these were all painted after the cars were purchased from the factory.

Joe Lanni’s AWESOME “A”

I’ve had a love for cars and trucks since I could remember. Growing up I had two uncles that were involved in the automotive world. One of them drove construction vehicles for a living and the other was always in the garage working on different cars and motorcycles. As a kid, I was constantly taking things apart and testing myself to see if I could put them back together or make small modifications along the way. At 14 years old, my father bought me a 1984 Z28 of which the previous owner said it never ran correctly. This became my first automotive challenge. I dove right in, not having a clue as to what I was doing. I had figured out that the spark plug wires were in the wrong firing order. I corrected it and got the car running. It was a 5-speed, so I practiced driving it in our driveway and learned how to use the clutch, which evolved to pulling hole shots on the street illegally.

When I turned 16, I got my second car - a bright red 1987 Trans Am GTA, which, at this point, made me get more involved in everything automotive related. I was soaking up as much knowledge as I could, reading hot rod magazines and watching television shows about cars. My friends and I were going to various car shows and visiting the drag strip whenever we got the chance.

After I graduated from high school, I purchased my dream car - a 2001 Camaro SS. At this point, the GTA was all apart and I had plans to rebuild it, but once I saw the Camaro on a lot for sale, the GTA got pushed aside and eventually was scrapped. I saved up and spent

most of my money on my Camaro, making upgrades and modificationsanything to make it go faster or get the aesthetics up to my standards, which was money well spent because I met a lot of great people and made life-long friends along the way.

Once I sold the Camaro, I had an idea to build a traditional hot rod. “Traditional” meaning a late ’40’s, early ’50’s hot rod using the correct era parts. After a few years passed, I came across a bone stock 1930 Model A with an outdated 80’s restoration that wasn’t exactly up to my standards, however, in my mind this car was setup to be the perfect candidate to modify into a traditional hot rod.

stripped it of the bumpers, fenders, hood sides, wheels and spare tire, all of which were sold the very next day. I mounted and installed a set of ’33/’34 Ford wire wheels with Firestone bias ply tires. The 201 cubic inch 4 cylinder was pulled and a Flathead V8 took its place. To get some more “go”, but mostly sound out of this motor, it was hopped up with an Isky camshaft, higher compression Edelbrock heads, Lake Style headers and Thickstun dual high rise intake with two Stromberg 97 carburetors. The hopped-up Flatty is feeding rotational torque to a 1985 F-150 4 speed transmission and to a Halibrand 101 quick change. Other changes along the way included a chrome ‘32 grille and a smoothed out ‘32 firewall. ’37 Desoto tail lights separate this hot rod from other rods when it’s pulling ahead. All in all, it’s just a simple hot rod with a few special details that satisfies the need.

The ST70 was exported to Canada and the US as the CT70. This is an exception to Honda’s usual practice of prefix letters indicating the bike family, followed by engine size. The CT70 is mechanically unrelated to other CT-series bikes such as the CT50 Motra, and the CT50, CT90 & CT110 Trail Cubs. The ST90 was sold in the US as the Trailsport, and was not given a CT designation.

The ST50, ST70, and CT70 were introduced in August 1969 and produced through 1981. The larger ST90 was produced from 1973 through 1975. The ST50 was reissued in 1995, and produced through 2000.

The CT70 was also sold in the US from 1981 through 1994 with a new serial number format: JH2Dxxxxxxxxxxxxx, rather than the CT70xxxxxxx format used since 1969. These ‘JH2D’ bikes are not listed in Honda Japan’s production figures above and are perhaps licensed production.

A key feature of the ST-series is the pressed-steel “T-bone” frame that distinguishes it from Honda’s other minibikes: the Z50 Monkey & Gorilla, the Ape, the CF50 & CF70, and the CY50 & CY80 Nautydax.

As a general description, the ST-series bikes have a bench-style saddle, small fat tires, and folding handle bars. They have an air-cooled 4-stroke engine with either a 3-speed semi-automatic transmission, with an automatic centrifugal clutch, or a 4-speed manual gearbox. The ST90 uses larger 3.00-14 tires, compared to the 3.50-10 and 4.00-10 of the smaller bikes. For more detail about individual models, see the accompanying Infoboxes and the External Links section below. Due to the diminutive wheel-size and limited speed, the ST-series bikes do not always qualify as road-legal vehicles and were sold in some markets for off-road recreation only. Their licensing status varies with locale and time period during their nearly 40 years of existence.

Honda’s patents for the original ST-series expired in 1998, and replica bikes have become a popular export product for many Chinese manufacturers such as Jincheng, Lifan, Panda, and Redcat.

The Dax name resurfaced at the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show with the e-DAX concept vehicle, a 25 kg folding electric wheel motor scooter meant to accompany the Bulldog concept car as a trunk bike. This car-scooter combination was previously introduced by Honda in 1981 with the City car and Motocompo folding scooter.

Future Motorheads

I remember the days when my kids were growing up and how fascinated they were about my hot rods, classic cars and trucks, monster trucks and muscle cars. There is no denying that I am in-fact a Motorhead myself. They didn’t want to take the bus to school when they were kids; they wanted dad to drive them there instead. Seriously, what little kid wouldn’t want to catch a ride to school in a power plant Pontiac GTO when the weather was nice or ride in a huge lifted 4x4 truck when the snow was falling?

They would smile ear-to-ear when their teachers, friends and classmates saw them being dropped off and picked up after school in my rides while others were riding the bus or even worse; the mom mobile or run-of-themill car or truck.

My kids loved going to their sporting events or school functions and seeing everyone check out dad’s cool muscle car and monster truck. So will your kids. In the words of Paul Walker in the movie The Fast And The Furious, “Pop the hood!” and they’d drop whatever they were doing and ask if they could help me work on my ride. They mostly retrieved wrenches and screw drivers but they loved helping out just the same. I would tell them what I was doing and what each part or accessory did under the hood or under the vehicle.

More kids should drop their video games remotes and cell phones and get some grease and grime on them instead. Playing video games won’t teach them how to accomplish a quick fix on their vehicles when they get older and they should at least know how to change their own oil, tire or fix a leak on a hose that just burst and left antifreeze everywhere.

Growing up a Motorhead has its advantages.

It’s also a way to keep this automotive passion, hobby, culture and lifestyle alive and well, in-spite of what is currently happening in the automotive world around us today.

I will be writing more articles just like this one in the future and it’s necessary to bring kids into the automotive world we love as adults.

Not everyone is a car guy, or gal, and those numbers appear to be diminishing. There is nothing wrong with bringing up your kids as Motorheads.

A carhop is a waiter or waitress who brings fast food to people in their cars at drivein restaurants. Carhops usually work on foot but sometimes use roller skates, as depicted in movies such as American Graffiti and television shows such as Happy Days Carhops have long been associated with hot rods.

The first carhops appeared in 1921 when automobiles were beginning to be a common sight in Dallas, Texas. Two men, a businessman named J.G. Kirby and a

physician named R.W. Jackson, decided to take advantage of the fact that many people owned cars and more were coming. They realized that many of the drivers would rather not get out of their cars to eat. They opened a restaurant called the Pig Stand, which had male carhops from its inception. The A&W corporate website actually claims to have opened the first carhop restaurant in 1923, just two years after the Pig Stand initiated carhops. The term itself, a play on the word “bellhop”, was not used in print

until 1937. Women soon replaced male carhops during World War II, because most American men left their jobs to join the military and restaurants quickly discovered that a pretty girl sold more food. This declined in the late 1940s and 1950s, when men returned to the civilian workforce and pretty girls were seen as having an adverse effect of attracting loiterers.

During the mid 1960s, as newer drive-ins began offering drive-through service, the number of carhops declined dramatically and they are seldom seen today. Carhops can still be found at a few remaining original drivein stands and nostalgic fast food establishments, mostly in smaller and rural towns with local ownership.

Sonic Drive-In still employs carhops at most of their over 3,600 restaurants. In recent years, there has been a carhop resurgence, with some franchises cashing in on the nostalgia and memories of baby boomers.

The aluminum window trays used by carhops are still manufactured and sold today.

The uniforms of early carhops were important, as many drive-ins were competing and something eye-catching was seen as gamesmanship. There was often a military, airline, space age, or cheerleader theme, or any other concept an owner thought would bring customers in.

to one carhop at an unnamed drive-in, who ignores his grievance and skates off to flirt with nonpaying customers. Later in the film, when Maurice McDonald is telling of the advent of his titular restaurant, he says he and his brother laid off all their carhops due to said issues, superseding them with the “Speedee System” where customers were better served.

BUILT NOT BOUGHT

This article is what I call the Elders Edition. They are called that because they are built like the days of old. I say that with much respect to the owner. Mike Powers deserves this respect and then some.

Mike grew up in Yonkers NY in the 70’s. He will tell you he was not into the books or into school for that matter. Mike could not stand school to be honest. He was good with the trades, machinery and good with tools and stayed focus in doing just that.

Mike would read books and magazines to learn more. How could he not get hooked on muscle cars? His neighborhood was flooded with 396 Chevelles, GTOs, 442s, Fords and Mopars all over the place. Mike was determined to get a muscle car, one way or another. So, he got a paper route

and started saving. He would talk with the owners of these types of car and learn from them.

At the young age of 15, Mike bought his first car in 1976. The car was a 1966 Chevelle SS, minus the motor and transmission. He built a 454 L-S6, a trans and the axle himself. So, he was off to New York National Speedway. The combination provided Mike with 11.60 @ 117 mph on the first run of its life.

Mike looked back to the 60’s era of drag racing. Like a lot of us, he felt this was the “Golden Era of Drag Racing” before the big money and sponsors came rolling in. Mike’s favorite cars were the front engine dragsters. He found his dream in 2010 when he located a roller 1968 front engine dragster. Not just any front engine dragster but one with history. Mike

found this on a website being sold by two brothers in Rhode Island.

The original owner in 1968 was a racer named Dale Hall from Colchester, Connecticut. The car was in rough shape, but Mike wanted it anyway. He got the original front end re-chromed in Seekonk, Massachusetts. Davie Bear from Dragsters Supply had the parts to upgrade the chassis. The car had the original 1963 Olds axle still in the car. Mike rebuilt the rear end with parts from Fab Craft in Texas. Mike then found period-correct front-end parts. 1932 spindles, P&S steering box, and battery box. He found all the period-correct parts for the car. Akront wire front wheels are from California, Stewart Warner green stripe gauges, Sun Tack, Carter fuel pumps, Moon 3 ½ fuel tank and Rocket injector wheels that are copies of Halibrands. Mike then removed all the purple and polished the body with grade 0000 steel wool.

The drivetrain was built by Mike over 30 years ago. This is the same motor he had in his 1966 Chevelle. The trans is a turbo 400 that was salvaged from a wreck that he had built. A converter from Torque Converter Techniques

in North Branford, Connecticut, built the converter. He located vintage Edelbrock TR-2R with two Holley 660 carbs from eBay. The car has run its best of 8.63 @ 152 MPH on October 9, 2022. Mike did this project to preserve a 1960’s front engine dragster from what he feels is the greatest era of drag racing.

I can personally tell you that Mike does everything by hand. He uses an old bicycle pump to pump his tires up. No air guns here, how about a T-bar to do the rear tires on the car! Some don’t even know what a T-bar is. I used Mike’s pictures in this article because they have a deep meaning to him. After all, this is about Mike and his piece of history.

Mike is nostalgic, I have nothing but respect for this man. Keep the dream alive and don’t change a thing, Mike Powers. You can see Mike and this work of art at any nostalgia races around the east coast.

North Carolina Cougar

Premiering in 1977, the fifth generation (to 1979) Cats captured the attention of hundreds of thousands making this platform a top seller. Jack Wright’s Mercury Cougar XR7 is a fantastic example of this model line and makes its den in Hays, North Carolina. Jack Wright is owner and operator of Wrights Classics, a classic car sales and restoration shop also in Hays, North Carolina. He is a family man. “I have five sons and the most patient wife Ashley who herself has a 1980 Bonneville with only 28,000 miles and has been in her family since new.”

“My first car was not sexy; it was a 1969 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser, and I paid 50 bucks for it in 1983. Thanks to a great auto shop teacher it became a Camaro killer. It’s crazy now as I can’t find a halfway decent one for less than 10 grand. Today my car collection is at 10 and has cars from each decade from the 60’s to the 90’s. Grandfather had one, a great memory as a kid) and my 91 Mercedes 560SEC AMG clone in all white - a true Miami Vice dream machine. This was my dream car when I was a broke young mechanic.”

While working in the shop with two of his sons, Jack’s son Jeremy received a text from Jack’s ex-wife alerting that a family member was selling off the cars from her aunt’s estate in order to sell the house. “So, with only one picture showing the left front headlight and fender as the rest of the Cat was covered, I made a deal to buy the Mercury.” Jack loved these cars and here was his opportunity to own one. “I knew the risks as I had no history or any idea of the condition, but I was willing to take a chance and I was shocked when arriving with cash and trailer in hand as this car was just amazing.”

The Cougar was ordered from Bob Borst Lincoln-Mercury (Lincoln of Troy today) in Troy, MI by Luther Bush of Royal Oak, MI. “Luther, a lifelong Mercury guy, bought this car as a retirement present to himself.” The original owner literally based optioned everything on the inside. It has an AM radio. The car was ordered with no power windows, seats, nor locks; however, it had the Decor package for the exterior. He actually ordered the car exactly like the one in the sales brochure. (Jack has that as well). The Cat never saw a Michigan winter as Luther promptly moved back to his hometown of Lenoir, NC to retire. “Luther loved this car, and it showed as he had covered the original trunk carpet with new carpet to protect it. We found a box filled with car cleaning supplies, even a little broom. Luther enjoyed this car, and he drove it regularly until Jan of 1994 when he passed at the age of 75.” The Cougar was never moved again and was simply just covered up in the spot where Luther parked it in the garage. “Once I fully removed the cover, I was stunned. It was just dusty that’s it, still had air in the tires, so we just pushed it out into the daylight for the first time in 29 years loaded it on the trailer and hauled her to her new home.”

With only 46,000 miles on the Cat, it was a well-loved car. Therefore, she really didn’t need much. “We had to clean the fuel system, replace the fuel pump, fuel sender and pick up as well as rebuild the carb and of course changed all fluids.” Then the moment of truth…with a few pumps of the petal and a turn of the key she came to life, a short drive around the block and then the wash and paint correction. “That was the hard part: the dust sitting on the car had embedded itself into the single stage very thin 70’s paint, so with many hours of carefully working the buffer we brought the paint around. As for the interior, it needed nothing absolutely perfect. It helped that the garage it was in was climate controlled.”

The car was ordered with a 351 Cleveland modified along with the FMX automatic. “I was the only person in the shop to get this ole girl running again and only repaired and or placed items only to get it running, no modifications whatsoever. Sadly, we don’t drive her much, maybe 25 miles a year, mostly due to being so busy. However, this year we plan to attend some bigger shows and get her out more often. As far as ride, well I own many classic Lincolns and this Cat is right up there as a rolling couch.” Jack intends to keep this car as original as the parts chain will allow.

“I want folks to remember Luther, he loved this car and it showed. I’m sure he is smiling down at us now knowing his car that he planned out, ordered and cared for all these years is in the hands of someone who will do the same.”

CABIN FEVER

The end of October, 2022, was the last automotive event in what was probably a better car show season than what I have witnessed during the previous two years. Always attended these automotive venues since I was in my twenties cruisin’ back and forth to car shows and cruise nights in my own muscle cars, show trucks and hot rods across the region.

2022, was a lot more active for automotive enthusiasts since the 2020 and 2021 car show seasons and we did have some more opportunities to enjoy our classic car and truck hobby and vehicle culture regardless of what the pandemic had in store for us all.

This article is titled: Cabin Fever. Normally, that term applies for the winter months that we are locked inside our homes hoping spring arrives soon so we can get back out there and cruise the car show and cruise night scene with all of our friends. Cabin Fever, in this case, also includes the previous couple of months most of us just stayed home and didn’t venture far away and in most cases flat out avoided large gatherings afraid of contracting the virus or avoiding the unbelievable heatwaves we endured last summer. It was a very hot summer.

The virus is still out there. I know, I had it for a few grueling weeks with a constant cough that lasted nine weeks. Winter is a long time to be couped up in our homes and not cruisin’ in our coupes, muscle cars, show trucks and hot rods. With vaccines available now for newer variants distributed to our region and provided to those that want, and need it over the coming months, we can at least see the light at the end of this long tunnel sometime during this spring and summer months. Let’s keep the faith and hope that soon we will all be leaving this cabin fever mentality behind us and venture out and about with our rides and start showcasing and attending area car

shows and cruise nights without fears and anxieties associated with the Corona virus and the new variants. We will overcome this virus and enjoy life once again on the road headed to an area car show or cruise night where we all belong all week and weekend long all cruisin’ season long. Let’s also hope

for a moderate temperature summer season with far less hot days on the calendar.

It’s now the month of February, but March and the first day of spring is just around the corner for all of us automotive enthusiasts with a passion for this car show and cruise night lifestyle, hobby and culture.

TIME FOR A CHANGE

His name is Tony DeConte.

We have been friends since attending high school way-back-when and still spend time together at area car shows and cruise nights during the cruisin’ season. His awesome 1978, Chevy Malibu, attracts a lot of attention whenever he pulls into one of these popular automotive events across the region. What I especially love about this classic car is that it’s anybody’s guess what it will look like at the start of the new car show season. He always changes something over the winter months and shows up with a new look, new paint job, new paint graphics or his motor has about 100 horsepower added under the hood.

This big block packs-a-punch! I will be featuring this vehicle in an upcoming Readers Rides feature article in a spring or summer issue of Motorhead Magazine.

It’s great to actually be surprised when Tony rolls into any car show or cruise night with his Chevy Malibu. Opens the doors to conversations and

it’s always very interesting finding out specific changes he made over the down-time winter months.

He does most of his mechanical and paint schemes himself and is very knowledgeable when it comes to bodywork and custom modifications on most vehicles. He has helped me with my classic cars, trucks and muscle cars over the years in many ways.

Tony is a Motorhead from way-back and it’s what originally brought about our friendship. We have remained friends all of these years. We both had muscle cars when we were teenagers and have always owned big trucks, classic cars and muscle cars since then. The photos I’ve taken of Tony’s ride shows exactly the types of extremes he is capable of creating. His rides over the years have never been boring. Always something interesting and great to look at and admire at car shows and cruise nights.

MICHIGAN CAT

Blue Mercury cars are a popular theme in Motorhead for over 5 years. 2023 will extend this trend. This Medium Light Blue exterior with Navy Blue 1/2 Vinyl top and matching color side trim 1979 Mercury Cougar XR7 makes its den in Monroe, Michigan with owner, Rob Mason, a self-employed truck driver. “I owned an identical car to this one in 1984.” Sadly, he sold it a couple years later because at the time it was not exactly the car of a young man’s idea of ‘the cool’ car at least to Robert; a decision he would regret for decades.

“After building a few neat rides, I figured it was time to get back a lost love and find a ‘79 Cougar XR7 that was the same color, same equipment package and same engine.” One day while looking through marketplace for something completely different, Robert stumbled across this Cat in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. “I was stunned at the completeness and condition of the car.” After he contacted the seller, asked a few questions, took a few days to think about it, called him back, a deal was struck.

to Robert’s old car that was traded in on a Plymouth Turismo in 1986 at a dealership in Toledo Ohio, right down to the car being a non-a/c car and standard dash panel. Other

matches include: same color interior with same blue cloth and basic AM/FM, no frills, no power anything. He was hooked. “I’ve

owned several cars after my first Cougar prior to this Mercury, notably a 355 small block Vega, 340/4 speed Plymouth Duster, and a 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T with 6 speed.” However, this car was special. “It was a reminder of the first car I ever bought that no one had to help me with. It was kind of a becoming a man kind of thing, a rite of passage.”

So, Robert contacted U-Haul and rented a car trailer and early the next morning he planned to head to Milwaukee to pick up my prize. Except the rental company had other plans – No equipment available. “After nearly 2 hours of driving from rental company to

rental company, I had the equipment hooked to my truck and away we went. Now coming from Michigan it started as a nice day, through Chicago and into Wisconsin was a breeze. Made it there to the seller’s house in good time. I test drove the car and looked it over real well; it was all there and very solid.” Paint was sketchy, but Robert could tell there was no major damage to the body and the car ran flawlessly. “I paid the man, loaded it up, and drove away.” On the way home all was going well (even through Chicago), until he touched Michigan soil and ran into an ice storm of the century. Then it was 10 mph all the way across Michigan to Monroe. “Arriving home, I pulled the Cougar off the trailer and

drove directly into the heated garage where the Cat lives in today.”

Since its purchase last December, Robert has cleaned it up. “I started by a complete interior/exterior detail and wax.” He painstakingly cleaned the entire engine bay and replaced a few small items - battery hold down was broke, radiator was leaking a little, oil changed, and a tune-up. “I replaced the carpet and re-dyed the seat fabric as well as added a sport gauge cluster and tilt wheel column.” He put in a new radio and 6 speakers: 2 in the back window, 2 in rear seat side panels, and 2 in the doors. “The radio was placed in the glovebox, so I wouldn’t have to cut the dash or remove original radio. I added dual exhaust and turbo mufflers, boosted up the back end an inch or 2 with air shocks and tossed in some custom interior lighting under the dash and seats. But that old paint…I talked my cousin into painting it at his shop.” Now it has a nice shine, that’s all one color and smooth as silk.

“I just love this car, it drives like new, sounds sporty, and it gets tons of looks. It has the noticeable feature of the trunk lid that has the flat portion which only the Cougar had, so it is not ever mistaken for another car of that era.” Usually, these cars tend to be more luxury than sporty so with it not having a single luxury item like a/c nor power windows/locks is kind of unusual. This Cat has the 302/2bbl with 3 speed FMX transmission and 3.00 gear ratio. Both seem fine for

“I drive this car, weather permitting, at least weekly. It has a big car feel to it especially since the front end is so long, but this Mercury handles with 1 finger to steer it. It is not a hole shot car by any means, but the Cat gets up to speed with no problem. Stopping is smooth and flat with no noticeable noise or problems.”

Last summer, Robert took his Cougar to a few shows around the area with decent reviews; however, no awards to report at this time. Perhaps this year will garner some for this fantastic representative of the last year for the 5th generation Cat (1977-1979). “I just love sharing the car with others to re-live their fondest memories of days past.”

Cross Your

It is the month of February folks and we all know what that means; “Valentine’s Day”. It’s also the annual month for Child Passenger and Family Safety Campaign titled; “Cross Your Heart Month”. Years earlier, the month of February was recognized as National Child Passenger Safety Month. Ultimately, due to poor weather conditions during this month in the northern states, all states across the USA now recognize the new NCPSM during the month of September.

The month of September allows for child passenger safety car seat check ups events to be hosted nationwide without weather concerns or issues in any state. It was a challenge hosting these venues with cold temps and snow falling on our heads all month long. I personally don’t miss those poor weather conditions while hosting car seat check ups outdoors at all. September is much better.

With a void to fill, I started a new Child Passenger and Family Safety Campaign for the month of February and I chose this month because of Valentine’s Day. The new slogan fits perfectly with the month of February

and Valentine’s Day. The logo features a heart with a seatbelt across it hoping to remind everyone to wear their seatbelts because somebody loves them. It’s a simple and effective visual graphic but it also has a strong message about the importance of using properly installed and inspected car seats and booster seats while reminding drivers and passengers about the importance of Buckle Up Safety for Kids and Families.

The most challenging task that we are tr ying to put off this winter is ultimately cleaning out the garage. There are a ton of items to go through, from left over assor ted tools, to containers of grease, to half empty bottles of fluids that are bringing us a sense of unnecessar y clutter. What even the most vigilant person hasn’t considered is the actual probability of their products being “expired” or well past use.

Etch knows that he will soon be in a high pursuit situation again realizing that the state trooper is obviously now in radio communications with other area state troopers telling them his location and where he is more than likely headed. The OUTLAW GTO ramps up speed as the shocked state trooper watches the taillights disappear into the darkness. There is no real safe place for the OUTLAW GTO to hide right now after being spotted by the state trooper. The closest state police barracks dispatcher is more than likely already coordinating

state police vehicles and informing those state troopers the last location and possible direction the wanted OUTLAW GTO is headed so they can attempt to stop and arrest Etch for tra c violations and breaking the law for driving a vehicle now illegal to drive on any street, roadway or freeway across America. Etch suddenly realizes he is hungry and thirsty and wants to avoid capture at least long enough to grab some food and a cold bottle of water. He cruises down the dark backroads trying to remain unnoticed but who knows how long that

will be. Etch sees some parking lot lights shining about a half-a-mile ahead of him. It’s a restaurant. Time for some grub. He slows down and pulls the OUTLAW GTO behind the building to keep it out of sight long enough to get some food and water. He shuts the beast down with a turn of the key. Now, to make it inside the restaurant.
