Hello Motorheads, times are crazy… we are in a pandemic; the chickens are not laying eggs; we have trains carrying toxic chemicals blowing up; we have spy balloons getting shot out of the sky; and banks are closing.

So, the hell with it, just go out and buy a Mustang. We don’t know what’s coming our way day-to-day. That’s why we say, “just go out and buy a Mustang”.

If your girlfriend leaves, just go out and buy a Mustang.

If you hate your job, just go out and buy a Mustang.

If your cat just died, just go out and buy a Mustang.

Every month we make the trip to Tasca Ford to deliver the next issue of Motorhead Magazine. Out front this month was this brand new

It was then and there that the thought came to my mind, everybody should just go out and buy a Mustang.

The Mach 1 is a very special car. It has 470 horsepower and the special Mach 1 suspension along with a striping and aero package. It’s a good in-between package and looks badass. The Mach 1 is one of those Mustangs that is sure to be a collector’s item someday. What’s nice about the Mach 1 is that it’s in-between a Mustang GT and a Shelby, and the price point is a lot less than the GT500. I have learned over the years that a high horsepower car is not all it’s cracked up to be. Sometimes, you can’t beat a car that’s balanced with the right amount of power and the right amount of weight. There is something fun about a good running, naturally aspirated car that doesn’t have all the complication of a supercharger and the weight on the front

end. The Mach 1, in my opinion, is a really fun car that has “the look” and the perfect amount of power to have fun.

So that’s why we say at Motorhead Magazine, just go out and buy a Mustang. You can stop by Tasca Ford and test drive this one or you can go there and order your Mustang to your specs. Once again, life is crazy, so just go out and buy a Mustang.

BUYING THE RIGHT INSURANCE FOR YOUR CAR

In 2022, a Florida man purchased a classic supercar at auction for $704,000. The car in question was a 2006 Ford GT, a car manufactured by Ford as an homage to the legendary Ford GT40 that won several races at Le Mans in the 1960s. (If you’ve seen Ford v. Ferrari, you’ve seen the car that inspired the tribute.) A few days after purchasing the car, the man took it for a ride. Unfamiliar with the workings of a manual transmission, he apparently popped the clutch trying to get into second gear, lost control, and drove the magnificent piece of engineering into a palm tree. The driver was uninjured, but the car was totaled. Adding to the owner’s misfortune, he had not bothered to register or insure the car.

If you own a collectible car, whether it is an antique, classic, modified, or exotic, it should be insured. But what type of insurance should you buy? If you intend to use the car for everyday commuting (how dare you), you need a standard vehicle policy. But, if you intend to limit the use of the vehicle to going to car shows and the occasional jaunt around town on nice summer Sundays, you should have insurance that fits your use and the peculiar needs of the vehicle.

Unlike the family minivan, a collectible car needs to be insured by a policy that accounts for limited use. If the car will only be driven occasionally, strictly for pleasure and garaged when not in use, the risk of damage is lower than for a commuter car. After an accident, performing repairs on a collectible may be significantly more difficult and expensive. These considerations are why some insurance companies offer specific policies for collectible vehicles.

How much coverage will you need? For insurance purposes, no two collectible cars are the same, so the coverage will be determined based upon factors unique to each car. The insurer and the owner must agree to an amount that will be paid out if the car becomes a total loss. This number is often referred to in the policy as the Agreed Value, the Guaranteed Value, or the Replacement Value. Before proposing an Agreed Value, the insurer will consider the car’s age, how well it is maintained, what modifications have been made, the market value, etc. (The insurance company’s appraiser will determine how these factors affect the value.) Other issues that may be considered: where the car will be kept, who will drive it, and how often will it be used. The owner may challenge the insurance company’s appraisal, and this often involves obtaining a second appraisal. (Before hiring your own appraiser, make certain that the insurance company ac-

cepts that appraiser’s qualifications, or it may disregard the opinion.) The policy will only issue if the insurer and the owner agree on value.

As with regular car insurance policies, your collectible car policy should cover liability (bodily injury and property damage), uninsured motorist, etc. Additional coverage to consider includes:

Specialized repair and restoration coverage – Many mechanics won’t have the knowledge, skill, or training to give your car the care it deserves. Those who do will probably charge more than what is allowed under a standard insurance policy. Your policy should cover the extra expense of hiring a specialist.

Special towing coverage – Transporting the car to the right mechanic under conditions appropriate for its age and value can be expensive. A 50-year-old car should be carried on a flatbed under cover, not towed behind a truck.

Spare parts coverage – Spare parts may be expensive and hardto-find. Coverage should take this into consideration.

Our advice to anyone looking to purchase a collectible car? Make sure you have the right insurance policy before you drive it.

And avoid palm trees.

And to be perfectly honest, you never really know what to expect when mingling with famous personalities, but on Saturday, March 4th I packed up Motorhead’s junior journalists Xander and Zoe and we headed to the ATRA Transmission seminar to meet our buddy Bill Smith from New England Transmission as well as special guest Bobby Ducote from the hit show Street Outlaws. Prior to the event I had heard Bobby was a great guy and that reputation definitely held true. From the minute we walked through the door he was just a real deal, every day dude that loves race cars. He took all the time we wanted to do photos with my two kids as well as a full sit-down interview with Motorhead. Later in the day he was also seen out in the parking lot having snowball fights with the group, but don’t mistake that genuinely good nature for leniency when he’s strapped in that killer F-body of his. There’s a reason why he’s called “Lil Legend”.

Bobby started racing at just 16 years old in a car he “borrowed” from his mentor Greg Brown. He told us that Greg was known as the LEGEND back then and there was not

a man alive that could beat him. Bobby would sneak into Greg’s garage after dark, and borrow his truck, his trailer, and his race car for weeks until he got caught red-handed by the LEGEND. Ducote thought he was about to get the ass-whippin’ of a lifetime that night but instead Greg made him man up and finish the race he locked in. Greg Brown would never drive that car again and the “Lil Legend” was born. Eventually Ducote would get a car of his own, a 2002 Chevrolet Camaro SS and he recalled how clean that particular car was. As all of our cars do however, it went through many stages of constant improvement.

The Camaro started out as a highly optioned six-speed car with a Nitrous Works plate kit and did very well for itself. Eventually with a cam, headers, and a couple more bolt-ons, the car was an absolute animal but it would start eating 10- bolt rear ends until a 9” made its way in. Ducote could not bring himself to tear up such a beautiful car so at that point it was traded for a 1988 Mustang GT, that received his LS1/Powerglide combo and went 9.70’s right out of the box. From there the 6.0 liter LS would get upgraded to a 408 and

run 8.60’s, which was phenomenal back then, especially with such a simple combination. Today that 8.60 elapsed time is picture perfect for the NMRA 8.60 Street Class, sponsored by Suncoast Performance.

CAMSHAFT TECH

Camshafts are the brains of your engine. They dictate your power band and engine characteristics. There are a lot of variables when choosing a camshaft. One of the most important things is your application and your intended purpose of the vehicle. Pickup Trucks and SUV’s will required a far different camshaft as opposed to a light weight sports car. The heavier the vehicle will require a camshaft that enhances low speed torque.

Compcams has an extensive guide that will help you make sense of what affects duration, lift, lobe separation angle, and advancing cam will do. If you look at a cam card you will see many specs on it. Key specs are intake, exhaust duration, valve lift, lobe separation angle, and intake angle center line. Duration is where most people look, it dictates a rpm range that the engine will make peak torque and horsepower. A typical stock camshaft will be around 195 degrees of intake duration. These cams will have a smooth idle and typically fall on there face by 5000 rpm or so. Most cam manufactures will have about 4 shelf grinds for most engine applications. They usually start around 212 degrees of intake duration and up into the mid 230’s with

a couple of choices in between. The higher intake duration will en hance high rpm power. A 230’s cam will move that HP peak to around 6000 rpm while sacrificing low rpm power and idle smoothness. Lobe separation angles will vary from around 117 for a stock application to tight 112 on a performance cam. The lower the number, the choppier the exhaust note is. Wider will make the idle smoother and widen the torque curve. Tighter will bring the torque to peak earlier and bleed down faster as the RPMs rise. How much advance is ground into a cam will enhance low rpm torque. Less advance or retarding the camshaft will enhance high rpm power.

A few more tips with camshafts...as you increase duration you will want to bring your compression ratio up. This will help build cylinder pressure that a performance camshaft will lose with added duration. I usually recommend a minimum of a 2400 rpm torque converter for any size-able duration change over a stock camshaft in automatic vehicles. The engines will not want to idle with a stock torque converter and the tightness of the stock converter will bog the engine down. The next tip is to add some rear end gear with a cam...what you lose down low in the rpm band will be enhanced with a set of gears matched to the cams RPM band. A nice cam for a C5 Corvette would be in the 224 degrees intake duration, 228 exhaust duration, .600 lift on a 113 LSA with 4 degrees of advance. Automatics with a 2800 converter and a 3.90 rear end.

T-BIRD SUPER COUPE

Growing up as a teenager in the ‘90s there were certain cars that you would just dream about. The T-Bird Super Coupe was one of those cars. It is funny, you just don’t see these cars around anymore. You see Mustangs. You see your Camaros, but you never see T-Bird Super Coupes.

The T-Bird Super Coupe came out in 1989 and ran production until 1997. It had a 3.8 liter supercharged 6 cylinder, producing 210 to 230 horsepower and 315 lb-ft of torque. Back in the day, that was a lot of power considering the Mustang only had 215 to 225 and the Camaro had 205 to 230 horsepower. The T-Bird Super Coupe actually had a Shelby style motor with the Roots-style blower on it, minus two cylinders. It was actually, in ways, ahead of its time.

I remember being 14 years old in 1991 and my father’s friend, John Jarvis, had an

that he let me recondition for him. I had that car the whole day, and I have to say, I didn’t tell him back then, but I drove it up the street. I

remember it just lit up the tires, rolling into it in first gear. Then, when I shifted into second, it lit the tires again. They had a lot of torque due to the Roots blower.

I would love to own one of these cars today if I could find one in great condition. It would have to be red with black interior. That is one of my favorite cars from the ‘90s.

I think in the future, the T-Bird Super Coupe is going to be a desirable collectible.

Racers will be split into 16 teams of 4, with each team fighting to win the proceeds for their chosen charity. Individuals are welcome and can be added to a team the day of the event.

In August of 1998, I was turning 22 and just went through a difficult, messy breakup with my boyfriend. I needed a car to bring me back and forth to college and work and decided that I deserved a fun new car to start over fresh with a new outlook on life. No more settling for less than what I deserved.

My nephew was big into cars and was going to New England Tech to get his bachelor’s in Automotive Technology. He always knew where to find the cool cars. He took me to a small dealer in Warwick, RI because he found a really cool rare car. It was a 1987 Mitsubishi Starion. It was black with a red pinstripe going down the side of the car with black leather interior. The radio could be controlled through the steering wheel and it had automatic seatbelts - really cool for that year.

It only had 42k miles on it because the guy that owned it died in a motorcycle accident and left behind a wife and a son. It then sat in his garage for many years until his son was about to turn 16 years old making him old enough to inherit his father’s car. Unfortunate-

ly, his mother wasn’t going to let this be his first car because she feared she would lose him to a motor vehicle accident as well. This is how I was able to get such a cool car. It was only $2500 and it became my obsession.

The Starion had a 2.6 turbo 4 cylinder engine producing up to 197 bhp and 209 lb-ft torque. It had a 5 speed manual transmission. It had an independent McPherson coil springs, anti-roll bar front suspension and torsion beam, and an anti-roll bar rear suspension with coil springs. It stuck to the road.

In the spring and summer months, I would drive it - with the sunroof open and the windows down - to work every day over the I-195 Washington bridge into East Providence. The sun would just be coming over the horizon with colors exploding across the sky, no other cars on the road and nothing but clear skies all around me. I can still remember the feeling of freedom and a sense of flying. What I would give to drive it one more time.

The Mitsubishi Starion and Dodge and Chrysler Conquest has already become a desired collectible.

Currently in the construction management field, Jeff Stone’s first love was always leaning towards American muscle cars of the 60s and 70s, which was initiated as a youngster working at Larry’s Texaco in Chepachet, RI at the age of 15. Jeff would perform oil changes, brake jobs and other minor mechanical automotive jobs and once his 16th birthday came, he bought his first car, a 1972 Camaro. Realizing a rear wheel drive car in the winter was not cu�ng it in Burrillville for traction, he traded it for a pickup, which got him by.

family, 30 plus years transpired, and the ongoing Camaro desire never subsided which led to the 1972 Z28 now on this Motorhead cover. Jeff had known both previous owners and the history of the car since 1989, which was garaged 95% of the time. The last of the two owners was a good friend of his and knew Jeff was seriously interested in the car for years and the time came when ownership was transferred in 2009.

Realizing his intentions of upgrades he had been contemplating for years would take him too long to pull off on his own, even with help from friends, and decided to have it done professionally. After doing some research, Jeff decided to take it to Conti’s Service & Motorsports in Cranston, RI. Once there and scheduled in, a list of requests were discussed and work started immediately - nonstop... which included a 396 STROKED SMALL BLOCK, dynoed at 490 horsepower @5300 rpm and 509 lbs/ft of torque @3300 rpm, which will propel the 4-speed Camaro with 3.73 gears and 26”

tall rear tires.

Once the under hood sheet metal was prepped and painted, extensive time was taken to provide a clean firewall appearance. The front and rear suspensions were completely rebuilt, prepped and

painted with high impact, chip resistant coatings. New leaf springs support the vehicle connected to a Moser fabricated rear differential with upgraded Wilwood 4-piston calipers/11” disc brakes on all four corners, activated by a Wilwood dual master cylinder (with modified

Stainless steel 304 alloy headers provide the proper cylinder head exhaust port match, diameter and primary tube length which in turn exit into modified collectors with a custom flanged (for removal) exhaust system. This gives Jeff the tunes he needs to take “the edge off” when needed. Under the hood, a custom polished aluminum Billet Specialties belt drive system provides adequate torque transfer

to the 220 amp chrome alternator, high flow Stewart mechanical water pump and power steering pump for his “easy steer” comfort. The high amp alternator provides adequate output for the high air flow dual fan radiator assembly, keeping the engine below 175 degrees on a hot summer day.

All under hood and under dash wiring was upgraded for the various components installed and rerouted as required. Stainless steel brake and fuel lines were installed and anchored, as necessary. An adjustable proportioning valve was incorporated to provide the proper braking bias with the new Wilwoods. A precise 4-wheel alignment was done and the initial test drive went down flawlessly.

Jeff’s 30 year wait for his Z28 is now over and fun, cruising time has begun.

It’s April folks! Spring is in the air. Rear tires are chirping here in the state of Rhode Island, New England and across the USA starting this month, kicking off the very popular cruisin’ and car show season. This month is all about shifting gears and heading out to car shows and cruise nights with your muscle cars, hot rods, classic cars and trucks, rat rods and specialty vehicles and enjoy these outdoor automotive events to the fullest with family and friends.

We only get to enjoy this cruisin’ season seven months out of the year and we all take advantage of this timeline to enjoy our automotive hobby and lifestyle while we can. Unfortunately, some of these venues are going away across the region and nationwide due to aged-out enthusiasts that no longer can attend these events due to old age, financial strains and loss of interest.

these types of vehicles, talking about these vehicles and one day own their own classic vehicle to showcase at car shows everywhere. Kids are the future of the classic car and truck show hobby, culture and lifestyle. If

we don’t engage them, or include them today, we could eventually see these types of automotive events significantly diminish or, one day, completely disappear. We might not see this happen in most of our lifetimes but it could become a thing of the past for the next generation of automotive enthusiasts. We don’t want pockets of area car shows. We want these venues to thrive everywhere for decades down the road here in New England and across the United States.

If you own a show vehicle and attend these venues, or are a spectator that is attracted to these venues, please take a kid with you so they can enjoy the fun too. Let them ask questions. Teach them about classic vehicles and let them learn about the automobile history that ultimately built America. The future of classic car shows could depend on you doing this right now.

While Japan is known for producing “tin” toy friction and battery powered cars, Hong Kong toy companies manufactured plastic versions with similar power drivetrains. Creative Creations, SIL, ARCO, and Lucky Toys introduced some rare Mercury Cougar items in the late sixties and early seventies. In addition, a couple knock-off companies from Hong Kong also sold Cougar products. All of these toy cars are seldom seen on the market for sale. It is interesting to note that the only Cougar body styles offered by these companies are 1967 or 1968. The scale of all these Cougars tend to be similar at approximately six inches long. Sadly, these lines of toys did not continue to offer more Cougar toys.

Creative Creations (with a C inside of a C as their logo) offered a “friction powered Cougar-XR7.” This model is very highly detailed. The box reads “hood opens, engine removable, fans on engine turn.” While not stated on the box, they shared this ‘68 Cougar line with SIL. Creative Creations cars sell for several hundred of dollars. SIL are the rarest of the plastic friction cars based upon a ’68 Cougar-XR7. Hoods and grills varied. Some had matching solid colored hoods, while others were clear to show the engine. Their boxes are similar to Creative Creations, and it reads “powerful friction motor, opening bonnet, chromed engine.” Both loose versions and boxed ones are highly desired. The SILs are also worth several hundred each, and they are some of the hardest to find of the plastic Hong Kong Cougars. A Rosenberg Company

(ARCO) produced red and white ‘67 Cougars with a “Cambuster” label on the sides and “24” on the top. ARCO “borrowed” the name “Cambuster” from Matchbox, and they were known for making knock-offs of other toy lines. A unique feature is having their engines shake back and forth when the front wheels are rolling. The ARCO toys can push a couple hundred dollars even loose.In 1986, Mattel purchased ARCO LTD, then it was dissolved in 1997; thirty years after making their plastic Cougar car. Lucky Toy Company sold a yellow 67/68 friction car. The body was similar to the ARCO; however, the engine, wheels, and “58” decal stripes are unique to the Lucky line. An

Besides the companies mentioned previously, Hong Kong knock-offs were produced mimicking these versions. These cars resemble other models and state made in Hong Kong, but the actual company name is not molded into the toy. One example is the “friction powered Super Car” as stated on the box. It is a yellow ‘67/68 Cougar. The body mold was very similar to the ARCO line and includes the same part number. However, the name “ARCO” is neither on the box nor on the toy itself. Also available was a police “Super Car” as shown on the box. An orange ’68 Cougar was found that appears to be based upon the SIL cars. It is unusual by having a battery powered drive motor similar to Bandai operations. Unlike the SIL cars, no manufacturer’s name is on this toy.

Any examples of these rare plastic Cougars would be a great addition to Mercury Cougar fan’s collection. All toys shown were photographed by Georgina May and will remain in Rob May’s collection.

FREEDOM TO CHOOSE

As car guys, we covet freedom, we keep it holy. We love our freedom of choice. It’s a consumer driven freedom. What is more free than the top down, on a road trip in the summer across multiple states, in your favorite car? The wind in your hair, not a care in the world. The only care you really have is where to fill up next, right?

Now imagine you can’t take that road trip because there is no option to “fill up.” Suddenly you realize you can’t even choose what car you want to take that trip in. You no longer have a choice. Your dream car, locked away behind a government key that says somehow it became an evil, polluting tree killer, and therefore illegal. You’re a minuscule part of the problem, but you’ve been swept up in some crusade that your weekend warrior barely touches. Doesn’t matter. You can choose any car you want, as long as it’s electric. If you’re like me, you felt something awful in that moment. Maybe hopelessness. Maybe anger. Like the world is closing in, the doors are locking, the dreams are gone. Fight, flight or freeze kicking in? What is worse is it’s real. This isn’t your imagination. It’s a reality and it’s already happening and you’ve done nothing about it.

California led the charge in banning the sale of new gas powered vehicles. Their hope was to follow other countries that have placed similar goals. Ban gas powered cars by 2035. They realized that they couldn’t go after all cars, a la Green New Deal, so they targeted new cars. We associate cars with freedom here, unlike other countries that cherish public transportation so it’s difficult to implement en masse. So instead they chose baby steps. That continued with liberal leaning California followers like Massachusetts and now Rhode Island.

It looked like the ban was just going to cruise into existence with little push back from the car community as a whole. You see, EPA has been after the car community for some time. In 2015 SEMA, the automotive aftermarket proponent, started fighting EPA going after converting regular cars into race cars. For many of us this fight isn’t new, it’s just another chapter. This chapter changed when Rep. John Joyce (R-PA) opened up legislation that stated, “Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act” (H.R. 1435). It seeks to eliminate the section of the Clean Air Act to allow consumer’s choice to purchase gas powered vehicles

and you should support it, and I’ll tell you why. To many of us this is just logical thinking. America is all about choice, but it’s also about the will of the people. What’s more the will of the people than the consumer space? If the consumers want something they simply start buying it up and the world better roll with it or be run over. Consumers find a way. Banning vehicles is the opposite of that. It means the choice goes into the hands of a few and the consumer’s choice disappears. It’s why we see depression and anxiety on the rise. Even more so after being locked in our houses during the pandemic.

This is a simple win/win for everyone. If you love electric or hybrid cars you can choose to purchase one. But if you aren’t comfortable as a consumer purchasing that new-fangled technology you can sleep easy in your old truck. Maybe you’re a Luddite like me that likes your car simple or maybe you are very tech savvy and see the weaknesses inherent in the system. But the truth that remains is the consumer gets to choose in America whether something succeeds or fails. Doesn’t matter what you support, choice is always good.

I’m a huge electric car fan. I’ve been following the technology since the 1980’s. I learned that the first cars were steam and then electric as far back as the late 1800’s. I grew up playing games like Car Wars and seeing futuristic cars driving on Hot Wheels like tracks. I was very excited to see what they could do, but the current climate has really taught me more and more what they can’t do. I was told that big oil held them back, but as we see the lack of charging stations, the hour long waits in long lines, the limited range, I started realizing it

wasn’t big oil that held them back. It was a consumer that realized their weaknesses. The real problem is, those weaknesses haven’t been ironed out yet and many of my electric loving friends are realizing the same, but they are being forced forward. They are turning in their off-brand electrics and going back to gas, but, like a communist blockade, this new wall coming up will soon prevent them from leaving what doesn’t work and just like the real wall it was the people that suffered from those bad choices that were the real problem.

With consumer choice it allows the supporters of electric, like me, to continue to hammer out the problems. A good example is an ancient electrical system that is in dire need of updating. Electric has done a great job of uncovering battery inefficiency and improving not just its own technology, but it will force improvements in all our areas that could make it a viable option for motor vehicle travel. I want to support it, but I can’t do that if I know someday it will cost a future youth the joy of driving a gas-powered ’57 Chevy. I can’t support it if it will prevent me from possibly owning that supercar of my dreams or cruising with my friends. If it takes the joy out of it then why do it? It could also create a market where those in unfortunate conditions can’t afford a used car or a new battery, relegating them to public transportation and limiting their ability to escape poverty. I’m not willing to lose my soul in a process that I know won’t succeed.

I could write an extensive article telling you the positives and negatives, but the truth is, it all doesn’t matter. At the end of the day you’ve already made up your mind and I’m not here to change it. That’s right, I don’t care if you hate gas or electric. It doesn’t matter because that’s the beauty of choice. Henry Ford learned that lesson as he moved forward. People wanted to take out loans and would spend more to not be relegated to black. He learned that his search for a car everyone could buy meant he would eventually have a car nobody wanted to own. The truth is America is also the place where if you tell us we can’t have something… that’s exactly what we want.

Here’s your opportunity to make your voice heard. Support the legislation to choose. Support the consumer. Support yourself and the future youth that will one day inherit this car community and let them dream like we did, because those dreams made us great people, hard workers, and made life worth living.

alone at his table. The woman takes it upon herself and quickly sits down at the table next to Etch still reading his menu. She taps him on the shoulder twice with her index nger. Etch looks up from the menu. “What exactly do you want from me?” asks, Etch. The woman smiles and replies; “You don’t remember me do you Etch?” He looks back down at his menu. The waitress arrives back at the table with more co ee for Etch’s co ee cup. “What’ll it be hun?” Etch looks up from the menu; “Does everyone refer to every customer here as hun in this restaurant?” The waitress smiles and replies; “Just the cute customers hun. What would you

like from the menu?” The strange woman now sitting alongside Etch at the table without missing a beat asks for scrambled eggs, home fries, sausage and another cup of co ee. Etch looks up at the waitress and orders the same breakfast meal but asks for bacon to go with the sausage. The waitress grabs the menu from Etch’s hand. “Be right back with your orders.” Etch stares at the woman for a few moments. “I do know who you are now.”
