THE BASELINE TEST!

Very few automotive enthusiasts realize the value of Dyno and Air/ Fuel Ratio Testing. The Baseline Test takes about an hour or so in time and can give you a good assessment of your tune and condition of your motor. We can test the power and torque output and air / fuel ratio. For computer controlled cars we can also data log various infor mation from the car’s computer. Critical information like engine RPM, commanded air / fuel ratio, timing advance, and knock retard can give us a good view of whats going on compared to the information from the dyno sensors. One of my basic services is The Baseline Test and it’s the perfect time of year to get your car ready for the new rac ing season or to make sure everything is correct after winter storage. Last week, a new customer, Nunzio called and was wondering how good his tune was on his 1969 Camaro with a 350CI and a Holley car buretor. Nunzio had a good friend do the carburetor adjustments by ear and feel, but didn’t have access to a Wideband O2 sensor. After we

strapped the car to the dyno, we did a little cruising on the dyno at part throttle to see what the air / fuel ratio was. It was on the rich side, around 12.8 to 13.5, not too tragic for a carburetor. Next we did a partial full throttle pull to around 4500 RPM to verify if we were lean or rich. We were on the rich side again, close to 11.6 to 11.8, in that RPM range. We did another pull to around 2500 to 5600 RPM and gathered all the data for his motor. Nunzio’s car was actually pretty close to where it needed to be. Slightly rich but runs decently, tip in throttle was good and no stumbling. Nunzio’s Camaro made 255 RWHP @ 5000 RPM / 292 RWTQ @ 3600 RPM, not too tragic for a mild cam build. We took a look at the data and saw a few areas for improvement. I suggested that he get his buddy who set up the carburetor to come down for a tuning session. I told him that he will probably need to go one jet size smaller on the primaries and maybe one smaller dyno to make maximum power and torque. Nunzio seemed happy to

4 TECH ITEMS CAR GUYS SHOULD CONSIDER

We live in a world of technology and unfortunately the car world seems to be averse to new technology. Bluetooth connectivity, touch screens, you’d think these things would be standard for years, but still there are vehicles today that don’t have them. It’s shocking to think that my car was made in 2011 and didn’t come with cruise control and only basic Bluetooth connectivity.

The truth is many drivers are averse to new technology as well. I, for one, yearn for an era when manual transmissions take precedence over lane departure and automatic breaking. I can’t even imagine owning a vehicle that turns off at stop lights. It shouldn’t be shocking that just as many people who say the industry is slow also say that every move is killing what makes automobiles enjoyable. In some cases, they’re right.

That being said, the world is the world, and it can be a wonky place. Ever try to navigate the streets of Boston while dodging the cavernous potholes and unkept infrastructure? We quickly realize that a tool for that is pretty important, so today I’m going to go over 5 things that even those of us who breakout in hives when the word “technology” is said, can get behind.

THE SMART PHONE

I know you’re probably already groaning that you’ve had that flip

phone since the Nixon administration, but it’s time to consider this. No matter how much technology they try to jam in my car, the more my phone has surpassed it by a mile, left it in the dust and made it obsolete before I even turned the key and used the oldest device in the vehicle, the cigarette lighter to power it. The Smart Phone has directions, music, and just about anything that a clanky old radio does

and does it better. It adds freedom to any commute so it’s required equipment and if you have an auxiliary plug, it can connect right up. Which, simply put, means I can have any year vehicle I want and still have all the technology I need and more by just having my smart

phone do the heavy lifting. It’s literally the work smart, not hard, concept that everyone is missing for their center dash.

An option that you can consider adding is Bluetooth. A simple wired controller to your stock radio, hidden under the dash and suddenly you’re playing anything you want while your navigation tells you where to turn through the speakers without a wired connection. It means you have access to the entire library of Frank Sinatra online but are still playing it through those 70-year-old systems.

It’s also the reason we live in a distracted driving world and that is a problem you need to be aware of. It’s pretty tough to slam gears while driving with that steering wheel that lacks power steering while fidgeting with your phone. So, make sure you think about your safety over your newfound freedom.

WAZE NAVIGATION

Since we’re on the concept of smart phones then we need to figure out how to get from points A to B in the best way possible. Being stuck in traffic with the top down on your cross-country trip does not make for a good trip. Waze is a navigational application with social learning for smart phones. You just figure out the destination address and it uses the experience of everyone on its network to find the best path, dodge roadblocks and tell you when traffic is getting bad and options to get around it. You and other users can warn about potholes, stopped vehicles, and police presence. For many it’s removed the need for expensive navigational equipment and radar detectors. It still needs more low car support to dodge difficult roads, but if that option ever becomes available, I’d venture that Waze will get it first.

At times you’d think the world has gone crazy. It spent over a year cooped up from the pandemic and when we hit the road, accidents rose like a rocket on the 4th of July. Everybody has to get there, cutting across 4 lanes of highway to get to the exit they should’ve

merged with about 5 miles back. We also live in a world where global prices are skyrocketing and that means criminality like insurance fraud. Tricky fraudsters know your insurance will blame you for rear ending someone, so they jam on the brakes with three friends in the car to say “you did it, they didn’t”. So how do you fight it all? Simple. With a dash camera.

Dash cameras are already very popular in other countries for all the reasons stated above which means they’re just as important in the states. Ever drop your car off at the repair shop and have them say, “it came in like that”? Well, now you can prove that it didn’t. That goes double for road rage incidents that can cost you thousands in damages without proof.

I was never more floored than when I was struck by another car and the person that hit me rushed to the cop to tell him how bad I was as a driver. When we reviewed the camera, the story changed just to find out they weren’t even insured.

Let’s be honest, car shows are public places and there’s a ton of stuff that can go wrong. My dash cam is motion sensitive, so it only records when something is going on. I wish I had it when one of the cones that zoned the show car positions went flying into my door and the show coordinator completely denied it saying I’d need to prove that the gouge in my door wasn’t there before.

The Walkie-Talkie is nothing new. When I grew up the CB, as it was called, was almost a required install. Fun movies prompted everyone

are long gone, but for truckers, it’s still a useful and necessary tool. Today there are great family radio handheld options that don’t require a license to use. Usually good for a few miles of radio communication, it is perfect for long journeys and multiple vehicles. Don’t be averse to getting a license as well. It will expand your reach and has a huge family of individuals that love populating the air waves. It can go far beyond just your car community.

They are perfect for car drives, car shows, any style of communication where just pressing a button and being connected to your friends is needed. It’s a lot easier than yelling, for sure, and if you do a ton of car events with big groups, you’ll find them amazingly useful.

If you want to use your new Smart Phone you can also consider apps like Zello that can greatly expand your reach, but these are limited to a mobile internet connection that may not always work and not everyone can acclimate easily.

• When stuck in highway traffic, is it better to stay in your lane, or try to “beat” traffic by switching lanes? According to the Discovery Channel show, Myth Busters, changing lanes can result in a faster commute, but not by much. Lane shifting shortened travel time by about two minutes over a two-hour drive.

• Catalytic converter thefts have skyrocketed, causing nationwide shortages. Thieves slide under cars and use a reciprocating saw to remove them. Why? Catalytic converters contain rare metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium, precious metals that fetch a high price on the black market.

• Justice for the Corvair: You may remember that, in 1965, Consumer Protection advocate, Ralph Nader, published Unsafe at Any Speed, which highlighted the dangers of Chevrolet’s firstgeneration Corvair. Nader claimed the Corvair was unacceptably dangerous because its swing-axle rear suspension caused loss of control and roll-overs. Public reaction to this book

was instrumental in the creation of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the federal agency that now regulates automobile manufacturing safety. What many do not know is that a 1972 safety commission report conducted by Texas A&M University along with NHTSA concluded that the Corvair had no “abnormal potential for loss of control or rollover” when compared to contemporary vehicles of its type. Unfortunately, by

that time, declining sales due to bad publicity had forced Chevrolet to end Corvair production.

• The most affordable production car sold in the United States in 2023 is the Nissan Versa S model, starting at $16,755. In 2022, a rare 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe sold at auction for a record $143 million, enough to purchase 8,534 Nissan Versas (before tax).

• Prior to the 1920s, city

streets were open to pedestrians, pushcart vendors, horse-drawn vehicles, streetcars, and playing children. As motorized vehicle traffic increased, so did accidents, injuries, and deaths. In 1923, residents of Cincinnati proposed that all cars be equipped with governors limiting them to 25 miles per hour. Automotive groups and manufacturers responded to this threat with coordinated efforts to enact laws that recognized that the primary use of roads was for motor vehicles, not pedestrians. These efforts included media campaigns that sought to publicly shame pedestrians who crossed streets illegally, labeling them as “jaywalkers” or “jays,” a slang term meaning “rube” or “hick.”

• The longest interstate highway is Route I-90, stretching 3,085.3 miles between Boston and Seattle, starting at Logan International Airport and ending at Lumen Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks.

• William Phelps Eno is often referred to as “the Father of Traffic Regulation.” In 1867, after horse-drawn carriages caused a traffic jam that made him late for the opera, Eno was motivated to find his true calling in life - writing traffic regulations. Up until that time, no one had spent much effort attempting to organize how streets were used. Eno wrote many traffic regulations and his innovations included traffic lights, posted speed limits, traffic roundabouts and “rules of the road.” As motorcars became prevalent, many of Eno’s innovations were adopted around the world and are still in use today. Though he continued to promote traffic safety until his death in 1945, Eno never bothered to learn how to drive a car.

Kelly Yessaian’s 2003 Mustang GT Convertible

By the time this issue of Motorhead Magazine hits the streets, all the local Cruise Nights will be in full effect. While there is literally somewhere to go every single night of the week, only a handful of places have become our regular “go to” spots. Sunday mornings we hit Kars and Koffee for a good breakfast, before your little buddy Xander has lacrosse practice. The second Monday of every month we like Mann Orchards for a Dynamite Don’s five fruit pie and some ice cream. Then every Friday evening we swing by Papa Gino’s with our good buddy “Cruise Night” Gene Gerry. Our Modus Operandi when choosing Cruise Nights is always family friendly establishments with food available, so we can give the Boss lady a night off from cooking. The Boss Lady, aka Kelly Yessaian definitely deserves a night off from slaving away in the kitchen, and what better way to blow off steam than to smoke some tires on her immaculate 2003 Mustang GT Convertible. Kelly’s GT started life as a bone-stock, low mileage finding at a local Ford dealership. Within one day my dad (Motorhead writer Ed Yessaian) was already “personalizing the car” with a Ford OEM Mach 1 grille delete and front chin spoiler. From there he had the headlights and taillights lightly smoked, which stands out quite nicely on the Zinc Yellow paint. The rear bumper was swapped out for a factory 2003 Cobra piece that was smoothed to fill in the letters then the lower bumper was color matched to the blackedout trunk panel to give it that iconic 60’s Mustang look. Appearance wise the only other body modification was the flush mounted, authentic Saleen spoiler. At that point my dad was satisfied with the overall appearance of the car, until the comments about

the 4x4 stance were mentioned.

To resolve the issue with the factory ride, my dad installed Eibach Pro-kit springs and removed all the factory isolators. Contrary to a common misconception, there was absolutely no issues or additional noise caused by removal of the isolators and the car sat over 1/8th of an inch lower. To compliment the new look, a set of Shelby Razor wheels made their way to each corner with 18x9’s in the front and 18x10’s out back. Now looking the part, it was time for the Boss lady to make some noise by ditching the factory exhaust.

Clearly when it comes to exhaust, there’s only one place to go in our family, to our cousin Dan Christopher at Southern NH Undercar in Hampstead, NH. Dan fabricated a custom X-pipe for the car and bolted on a Magnaflow cat-back system that delivers the perfect sound, without being too obnoxious or droned. While the car was at Southern

NH Undercar, a familiar face popped in for a visit, Troy Samoisette of C&T Performance Automotive, who decided the car needed a little more pep, by way of a Ford Racing 3.73 gear set, Ford Racing differential cover, and complete rear end overhaul. That particular upgrade made a world of difference, especially when accompanied by an MGW shifter, to keep Kelly’s gear-banging crisp and accurate. To correct for the ring and pinion change an SCT-X4 tuner updated the PCM and also accounted for a JLT Cold-Air kit and 93 octane tuning. The car is waiting for an appointment with the mastermind Pete Johnson at Performance Dyno, but until then, the baseline tune will have to do.

DOMINIC’S 1967 SS 396 CHEVELLE

His name is Dominic Masiello and he is a resident of South Grafton, Massachusetts. This is his 1967, Chevy, SS 396, Chevelle. It’s a Sport Coupe body style with a flawless Bolero Red paint job and has a black vinyl interior. It has an original 81,268 mileage reading on the odometer, in itself, is very rare to find.

The motor is an original 396 CID, Chevrolet V8 with a steel block. This motor has been rated at approximately 325 HP. The motor serial number matches the chassis number. The motor has been completely restored by Dominic and features many chrome style motor parts and accessories. Motor is equipped with an aftermarket Edelbrock high rise intake manifold, an Edelbrock 750 CFM carburetor and MSD ignition.

Exhaust manifolds are original with a hot jet coating. Motor has an Edelbrock camshaft and equipped with roller rocker arms. This Chevy is a complete frame-off restoration and has no erosion or rust anywhere on the chassis or suspension. The Chevelle features 15” American Racing Mag style

wheels. Front tires are P225-70-R15’s and rear tires are 255-70-R15’s. The dual exhaust is all aluminum with shortened Magnaflow mufflers. The Chevy

factory showroom condition that packs a punch on the streets.

You will not find many 1967, Chevrolet, SS 396, Chevelle’s like this one on New England roadways or showcased at area car shows and cruise nights during the cruisin’ season. Car Show to Help Homeless Animals in

The 14th Annual “Cause for Paws” Classic Car Show roars to life on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at 171 Service Place, located at 171 Service Avenue (off Jefferson Blvd.), Warwick, RI 02886. Gates open at 9 am. Rain date is Sunday, July 16, 2023.

Classic Cars, including Antiques, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Exotics, Rat Rods plus Custom Cars and Fire Trucks along with all-year Corvettes are invited to exhibit.

The vehicle registration fee is $15 per car and is from 9 AM to 12 PM, with free goody bags and commemorative Dash Plaques to the first 100 registrations.

It is the month of May everyone and it’s a nationwide focus month for educating and heightening awareness on the importance of wearing your seatbelts.

The national focus weeks this year begins on May 22nd and ends on June 4th, 2023. State troopers and police officers across the Ocean State, New England and across the USA will be out in force making sure that vehicle drivers and passengers are wearing their seatbelts for added safety on our roadways throughout the summer months. Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start of the summer season, and this campaign launches on the weekend before, and ends on the weekend after, Memorial Day Weekend. Car shows are shifting gears and they are now being hosted here in Rhode Island and across New England on a weekly schedule. This also includes weekly cruise

nights.

SURVIVOR SURPRISE

One day this month, as I was pulling into Advance Auto Parts in Cranston to pick up parts for my friend, I was taken by surprise when I saw this beautiful all-original 72 Cutlass. I also noticed a woman standing next to the car talking to one of the employees, so I approached her and asked her if the car was hers.

She replied, “Yes, it is.” Her name is Ren Donohue.

I asked Ren to tell me the history of the Cutlass. She told me that it belonged to a Rhode Island police officer who purchased the car brand new, and he passed it down to one of his relatives that she knew. Ren explained how she purchased it from the family member who had inherited it.

This 1972 Cutlass is all original with the original paint and only has 98,000 miles on it. It is equipped with the 350 rocket V8. Ren explained how she loves working on it with her friends and family, and how she acquired the car. She always wanted a Chevelle and knew a person who had this Cutlass and she had to rescue it.

When I first noticed the 72 Cutlass, I could tell that it was very well taken care of. The paint seems to be original and in very nice condition. It is a very solid car with no rust on it. When I spoke to Ren, she explained how she loves working on her 72 Cutlass. She gets a lot of help from friends

It is hard to believe when it seems like yesterday, 30 years have gone by since these cars were brand new. The year was 1993. Dave Regine and I were in high school. That was the year I first got my license. In 1993, my first car was a 1993 Ford Probe GT, brand new from Paul Bailey’s Ford. David was driving a 1986 Cougar that he got from his grandmother. It was in great shape. He put a set of 89 Mustang GT wheels on it. The Summer of ‘93 was one of the best years of my life. Everything was new and exciting. These Mustangs were our dream cars. They were everywhere. They were so popular in the ‘90s that Vanilla Ice’s 1990

Back in the day, you would cruise Reservoir Ave. on a Friday night. There would be a bunch of these cars on the street racing down New London Avenue and Route 37 in Cranston. A typical Friday night in Cranston would involve us cruising up and down Reservoir Avenue and meeting in Garden City. You would be out on a Friday night and see Fox Body Mustangs going up and down the road, pulling into the Burger King parking lot, and setting up races. I remember guys that had these cars; Dominic Pacheco, Louis Scorpio, Derek Ciampanelli, Walter Marsh, and of course, Anthony Melise with his 93 Reef, blue convertible GT. One in particular that caught the eye of David when he was in high school, and I remember him talking about it, was Todd Patalano’s brand new 93 Summer Edition. We used to see it in Cranston, and Dave loved it. He was hooked and knew someday he would have to get one.

used to have a whole assortment of fox bodies on the lot. When I got my 93 Mustang GT, the car that changed my life and first got me into performance, back in the ‘90s, the place to go was Karl’s East Coast Speed. That was when I first met the Volk family, and we formed a long friendship of over 30 years. I remember pulling into Karl’s East Coast Speed and asking him what I could do to make my car faster. He told me the common package people used to do to the Mustangs was gears, pulleys, Flowmaster exhaust, and cold air intake. And let me down memory lane is over. Now to the car...

underdrive pulleys, 373 gears, cold air intake, and, I believe, a Ford Motorsports suspension. I have to say, I have owned three of these cars, and this one drives so nicely with the suspension upgrade. It is tight, and it sits just right. If you guys have had these cars, you can attest to how floaty they can be with the stock suspension. This one is not like that at all. It gives a good ride and is tight at the same time. When I was driving this car to the shoot, I have to say I owned many cars from Hellcats, Corvettes, a Camaro ZL1, and even a new S550 Mustang, but this car has a specific character that these newer cars don’t have. It feels faster in ways than some cars with double the horsepower. I understand why there are still a lot of these on the road. The 5.0 Mustang with the right number of bolt-on mods is a great fun car that cannot be duplicated today with some of these overcomplicated high-horsepower cars. Sometimes you just can’t beat the old-school basic 5.0 with the Flowmaster exhaust and a set of 373s. I have to tell you, it’s way more fun than some of the high-horsepower cars I have had, and it feels faster just driving around because the fox body is so light. I want to say thank you to my friend David Regine, who I have known for over 40 years, thank you for letting Motorhead Magazine use your beautiful summer edition.

Chris Martin’s 1994 SVT F150 Restoration Struck by Lightning

Every year, around this time, my good buddy Chris Martin prepares himself for his annual journey to Carlisle, Pennsylvania for the Ford Nationals. Along with his dad, Car Show legend George Martin, Chris usually spends most of the weekend in the show field next to his immaculate 1990 Notchback Mustang. But for 2023, he has a new ride, a 1994 SVT Lightning, that will help celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT). As a lifelong Ford enthusiast Chris had to jump at the opportunity to grab this Lightning from the previous owner who was

selling it as a project. Having always wanted one of these trucks, he accepted the challenge. The first thing he did once he got it home to his garage was remove the bed and the cab and address the weathered, but very solid chassis. After the chassis was brought up to his standards Chris replaced every single brake line and fuel line, as well as the suspension bushings and body mounts. With a very solid foundation to

start his build, he needed a reliable powerplant and luckily for him he had a donor truck of the

same vintage, which he was able to use for the engine. From the factory these trucks boasted 240hp and 340-lbs.ft. of torque thanks to a 351 Windsor engine with GT-40 cylinder heads and

tubular intake manifold.

Chris swapped a completely stock engine in the truck for now, while a second, more potent one is being built for the long-term. The factory dual exhaust was scrapped and Bassani headers with an X-pipe were bolted in. Southern NH Undercar in Hampstead, NH finished off the exhaust system, helping announce Chris’ arrival to Car Shows and Cruise Nights.

Chris is making tremendous progress on the truck and is very confident he will be ready for the SVT reunion in Carlisle. His plans are to drive the truck to and from the show, all the while taking good notes on anything he made need to address when he returns home. He is also looking forward to meeting the hundreds of first-generation Lightning owner at the show, that could

offer helpful tips on his future modifications. If you plan to attend this blockbuster event in Carlisle, definitely keep an eye out for Chris and his Lightning, along with his celebrity Dad George Martin, who will be rolling in with a 1967 GT390 Mustang that is finished in Clearwater Aqua. According to my dad (Motorhead writer Ed Yessaian), George loves it when idiots throw their candy wrappers in the trunk of his car. You heard it here first- Xander Y- OUT!!

Café Racer

A café racer is a genre of sport motorcycles that originated among British motorcycle enthusiasts of the early 1960s in London. Café racers were standard production bikes that were modified by their owners and optimized for speed and handling for quick rides over short distances. Café racers have since become popular around the world, and some manufacturers produce factory-made models that are available in the showrooms.

Noted for its visual minimalism, a 1960s café racer would typically be an English parallel twin motorcycle with low-mounted clip-on or “Ace” handlebars with rear-set footrests. Items considered “non-essential” such as side panels, rear chain enclosures, and voluminous mudguards (fenders) were replaced by lighter items, or dispensed with altogether.

CAFÉ RACER ORIGINS

Café racers were particularly associated with the urban Rocker or “Ton-Up Boys” youth subculture, where the bikes were used for short, quick rides between popular cafés, such as London’s Ace Café on the North Circular ring road, and Watford’s Busy Bee café. In post-war Britain, car ownership was still uncommon, but as rationing and austerity diminished, by the late 1950s young men could for the first time afford a motorcycle. Previously, motorcyles (often with voluminous sidecars) provided family transport, but the growing economy enabled such families to afford a car and dispense with a motorcycle at last. Young men were eager to buy such cast-off motorcycles and modify them into café racers, which for them represented speed, status, and rebellion, rather than mere inability to afford a car.

British motorcycles. In 2014, journalist Ben Stewart recognised the café racer as a European style that would be appreciated in America. Writing in 1973, Wallace Wyss claimed that the term “café racer” was originally used in Europe to describe a “motorcyclist who played at being an Isle of Man road racer”. SUBCULTURE

“Rockers” were a young and rebellious rock and roll subculture who wanted to escape the crushing convention of dreary 1950s UK culture. Owning a fast, personalised, and distinctive café racer gave them status and allowed them to ride between transport cafés in and around British towns and cities. Biker lore has it that one goal was to reach “the ton”, (100 miles per hour (160 km/h)), along a route where the rider would leave from a café, race to a predetermined point, and return to the café before a single song could play on the jukebox, called record-racing. However, author Mike Seate contends that record-racing is a myth, the story having originated in an episode of the BBC Dixon of Dock Green television show. Café racers are remembered as being especially fond of rockabilly music and their image is now embedded in today’s rockabilly culture.

The café racer subculture has created a separate look and identity with modern café racers taking style elements from American greasers, British rockers, 70s bikers, and modern motorcycle riders to create a global style of their own.

fairings. Some bikes had swept-back pipes, reverse cone megaphone mufflers, TT100 Dunlop tires, and larger carburetors (often with inlet trumpet rather than air filters). Occasionally the standard dual seat would be replaced by a solo saddle.

As owners became more experimental, they would fit engines in different frames. A typical example was the “Triton”, a homemade combination of a Triumph Bonneville engine in a Norton Featherbed frame. A less common hybrid was the “Tribsa”, which had a Triumph engine in a BSA duplex frame. Other hybrids included the “NorVin” (a Vincent V-Twin engine in a Featherbed frame), and bikes with racing frames by Rickman or Seeley.

EVOLUTION

Café-racer styling evolved throughout the time of their popularity. By the mid-1970s, Japanese bikes had overtaken British bikes in the marketplace, and the look of real Grand Prix racing bikes had changed. The hand-made, frequently unpainted aluminium racing fuel tanks of the 1960s had evolved into square, narrow, fibreglass tanks. Increasingly, three-cylinder Kawasaki two-strokes, four-cylinder four-stroke Kawasaki Z1, and four-cylinder Honda engines were the basis for café racer conversions. By 1977, a number of manufacturers had taken notice of the café racer boom and were producing factory café racers, such as the well-received Moto Guzzi Le Mans and the Harley-Davidson XLCR. The Japanese domestic market started making cafe racer replicas in the early 1980s, first Honda with the GB250 in 1983, then GB400 and GB500 versions in 1985. The GB400TTMKII has a frame mounted fairing and single seat with cowl. The Honda GB500 TT, sought to emulate BSA and Norton café racers of the 1960s. Markets outside got the XBR500 in 1985, with more an-

gular modern styling to compete with the Yamaha SRX600, until Honda USA released a version of the GB500 in 1989.

In the mid-1970s, riders continued to modify standard production motorcycles into so-called “café racers” by simply equipping them with clubman bars and a small fairing around the headlight. A number of European manufacturers, including Benelli, BMW, Bultaco, and Derbi produced factory “café” variants of their standard motorcycles in this manner, without any modifications made to make them faster or more powerful, a trend that continues today.

Although many riders of four-strokes associate cafe racers with four-stroke motors and British marques, and with an era prior to the onslaught of mostly-Japanese two-strokes, owners of two-stroke standard motorcycles have also been as enthusiastic at modifying their motorcycles into cafe racers, although the riders are less likely to ape 1950s clothing and hair fashions. During the course of the 1980s, manufacturers mostly phased out two-stroke standard motorcycles, replacing them with race replicas. Many obsolete standard designs continued to be manufactured or distributed from remaining stocks, especially in less wealthy countries. 1970s Yamaha and Honda designs, by example, were distributed or manufactured in India and elsewhere through partnerships with Indian manufacturers such as Escorts (partnered with Yamaha) and Hero Cycles (Hero Honda). Owners of these machines in countries where they are still available, such as India, Malaysia, and the Philippines have continued to modify these two-stroke standard motorcycles into cafe racers. Manufacturers of newer two-stroke designs also produce cafe racer inspired models, including the British 250cc Langen cafe racer announced in 2020.

He just looks up at her and smiles that smile as if that’s the response the waitress was looking for. “Oh, okay then.” The waitress leaves the table to wait on other customers. Etch watches as four men enter the diner through the front door. He looks at the woman sitting next to him, “Friends of yours?” She looks in the same direction and

takes a sip of her co ee. “No. But they think that they are friends of mine.” Two of the men look over at Etch and the woman sitting next to him and proceed to walk over in their direction. “This can’t be good,” said, Etch, under his breath. He stands up and faces down the two men as they both step up to the table. “What are you doing here?”
