entered the business in the next decade. In 1908 Henry Ford introduced the Model T and William C. Durant founded General Motors. The new firms operated in an unprecedented seller’s market for an expensive consumer goods item. With its vast land area and a hinterland of scattered and isolated settlements, the United States had a far greater need for automotive transportation than the nations of Europe. Great demand was ensured, too, by a significantly higher per capita income and more equitable income distribution than in European countries.

was merely a motorized horse buggy. But the Olds sold for only $650, putting it within reach of middle-class Americans, and the 1904 Olds output of 5,508 units surpassed any car production previously accomplished. The central problem of automotive technology over the first decade of the twentieth century would be reconciling the advanced design of the 1901 Mercedes with the moderate price and low operating expenses of the Olds. This would be overwhelmingly an American achievement.

READERS RIDES JIM WEICHERDING When you read these articles each month in Motörhead Magazine what is the first thing that comes to your mind? I’ll tell you what comes to my mind each month when I pick up my supply of Motörhead Magazines for deliveries and handouts at area car shows and cruise nights across the region. I think about how difficult it must be to be the publisher of this great automotive magazine and the dedication and hard work it must take to keep publishing interesting articles and putting together a simple but effective advertising format month, after month, every year. I think about what a great job our graphics department does with each and every advertisement and article that has to be laid out and planned with hours of creative efforts. What about all of the wonderful and informative articles and special features that our core writers have to put to pen and paper and keyboard to computer laptop every thirty days, month after month, to keep our readers coming back for more throughout the year?
6| Motorhead Magazine - April 2017
It’s not easy. It takes a lot of hard work to put together a magazine of this caliber on a regular basis. Our great advertisers are our lifeblood and our publisher is the backbone behind the scenes keeping it all together. The heart of Motörhead Magazine is our readers. Without them, we wouldn’t have a magazine. Our writers are our flesh and bone every month. We come up with feature articles and creative information for our readers all the time and we do it with a passion for our field. From the publisher, to the advertisers, to the graphics department, to our writing staff all the way to our readers, we have the same automotive passion. My READERS RIDES Feature Article is the driving force behind this passion and it gets our readers involved and excited about upcoming issue releases. This feature is very popular from our May issue through our October issue each and every year. It’s the time of year when their cherished rides go from hibernation and enter the real world of our automotive hobby and lifestyle each year.

BOOSTED: SAM SETH
“TRACK PACK” PON By LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” VERNANCIO It’s not easy being different, but sometimes it is the unique that draws even the most unlikely aention. Perhaps that is the beauty of why a genuinely rare counter piece can hold such value to those who gain a beer understanding of it. It was quite the intriguing encounter upon formally meeting Shubham “Sam” Seth back in October and his dually noted 2014 Ford Mustang “Track Pack” GT. As a biased General Motors enthusiast, it can be challenging to appreciate other makes unless they have a “tastefully built” approach to which Mr. Seth’s has not only that but holds an interesting story as well.
Think of it this way, most of us are born and raised with American roots and understand the heritage behind the great U.S. and the events which concurred the builds of the vehicles we now appreciate. However, not all of us are into the same scene or genre. Many of prefer drag racing, others circle track, or even those who strike daringly into the autocross or driers market. Consider this; would you have the courage to imagine a world that you have never dreamed of where the odds can defy you completely? In your mind, you are entering into something as drastic as learning everything from A to Z, changing your language, are, vehicle, and even your everyday driving style with lile to no help from colleagues or peers and jumping the gun. If 8| Motorhead Magazine - April 2017

gives it its fiery inside appeal and will cause most to take a second glance at the look of race side luxury. So what is in the cards for this wild pony’s future with Mr. Seth? Well, it’s simple. Gaining a beer track time at the quarter mile and focusing on general vehicle response through tuning technology is first on his agenda. Although this car can tear it up on the track, it is an every day driver that makes quite the fun work commute. Sam intends to have a shot defeating last year’s times at New England Dragway and possibly having a match-up against Louis Cicerone’s Hellcat and taking winner’s title. Be sure to look out for this pony at local cruise nights and at the track! you aren’t shell shocked, then you should be now. It was in 2007 that Sam had decided to take a risk and come to America to break into a new way of culture and busy himself into earning a Masters in college while working in a world he barely knew, and eventually find his first love. It happened by chance while walking home from school when he first set eyes on her, a beautiful brand new 2007 Shelby GT500 and from that second on he knew that he would never feel the same way again about any other car and a fascination had occurred. He took his time and learned about Carol Shelby, the car, and what it took to build such a beautiful machine and what it might take harness the power of a Mustang on his own. He put many hours into his occupation and saved up enough to buy his first which was a 2013 Mustang V6, however upgraded a couple years later to the higher powered pony that he holds the key to today.
TH’S ONY
With it distinct markings and known vanity plate, this ride is definitely known and makes an impression upon entrance. While it may sound like the ideal road demon several blocks away, there are a lot of factors that give this bad ass machine some pep into its step. We can start with the tacul mod list; a Paxton Supercharger (installed by Juggernaut Power in Coonecticut), ID1000 injectors, VMP Bap, Race Blow Off Valve, Boss Manifold, 8 rib upgrade kit, modified suspension, Mcleod clutch/ flywheel setup, and an upgraded fuel system to name a few. What also makes this Mustang maximize its launch forward is its “Track Pack” option that was researched intensively by Ford. It holds a 3.73 axle making the vehicle have a beer response with carbon fiber clutch plates for those who drive just a bit harder than up to Miss Daisy’s standards. Traction control was also recalibrated along with a beer ABS system and a Brembo package for ultimate stopping control (not that we need that anyway!). The car also holds a decadent interior provided by Braum Racing that

MUSCLE MACHINES JIM WEICHERDING When I think about my youth and how excited I was every year when the weather would break and I started to see these cool classic Muscle Machines emerge from their winter long slumber sitting under car covers and inside garages across New England. Even at a very young age I knew I was going to be a Car and Truck Guy when I grew up. My dad was a Car Guy and so were a lot of his friends. A nice weather weekend didn’t go by without a couple of these cool classic cars and trucks showing up in our driveway in Burrillville, Rhode Island to have some type of mechanical work done on them to make them run and look better. Hanging around cool cars with a cold drink in one hand and a wrench in the other hand was the normal back in the day. As I grew older and starting getting closer to that driving age my excitement grew with each passing day. I knew that I was not going to be buying a conventional or economical vehicle once I was
able to drive and own my own car. I wanted a Muscle Machine. I wanted something shiny and fast. I didn’t care what my friends were driving and most of them were driving mom and dad family cars anyway but not this guy. I was going to school in style every day. I started saving for my new car two years before I could even drive a vehicle. I had an envelope in my sock drawer and I would add cash to it every time I earned a buck knowing it was going towards my dream car someday. My friends were partying and spending their money on booze and having a good time while I was working in an apple orchard on the weekends picking apples, washing
dishes in my friend’s family restaurant after school and selling my artwork to keep the cash flowing. They drove around in $200 rot buckets and I

Conventional and economical vehicles never crossed my mind. I didn’t care about gas prices and I still don’t. Xander’s Vintage RC Restoraons Life as a Motorhead has only just begun By XANDER ANTHONY As a three month old boy, I have what seems to be a never ending amount of free time to ponder the wonders of life. As I thumb through my dad’s many years’ worth of Motorhead back issues, I constantly wonder “when exactly does a Motorhead become a Motorhead”. I’m not just talking about little kids sitting on the floor with a pile of Matchbox cars, even though that is an unofficial start to many youngsters’ automotive Xander Anthony Yessaian futures. I’m talking about when a future Motorhead actually starts “tinkering” and modifying, and taking on projects that never seem to end. After that, what sparks the never ending fire to race everything you own? For my Dad, Motorhead writer Ed Yessaian, the urge to race anything and everything began around 7th grade when along with his friend Mike Perella, he became interested in Radio Controlled cars. My Dad recalled, in detail, quite a bit of that very enjoyable period of his life. My Dad’s Radio Controlled car fascination started when his uncle (my Godfather) Bob Pjojian came home with a Tamiya Subaru Brat radio controlled off-road racer. It was, at the time, one of the coolest RC vehicles around and took hours to build. My Dad recalls saving every cent he could to try and buy his own and would always carry his Tower Hobbies “Tower Talk” catalogs around in his school bag. It would take nearly a year and a half before his Uncle Bob would eventually buy my dad his own 12| Motorhead Magazine - April 2017
RC vehicle, a Tamiya Midnight Pumpkin (1953 Ford F100 pickup). According to my dad, it was one of the greatest days of his life. Shortly after building, painting, modifying, and occasionally breaking that Midnight Pumpkin, he heard from Mike Perella that every Friday night the Medford High School set up an indoor track to race radio controlled cars. It was at this point that my Dad became obsessed with making things faster, racing them, and then making them faster again. After a couple years of racing the Midnight Pumpkin, the level of radio controlled cars had significantly improved as technology carried the hobby to the next level. It was at this point that Perella got the Bolink Eliminator 10 and Ed Yessaian got the Bolink Invader Oval Racer. For months after these acquisitions, the two friends dominated the competition. Until eventually they would both take a short break from RC cars as they both got in to modifying full sized automobiles. Mike Perella would eventually return to radio controlled cars, enjoying the gas powered RC era and today hangs out at RC CARS OF BOSTON (www.rccarsofboston.com) which is one of the largest and most experienced dealers of anything and everything radio controlled. Perella would occasionally spark my Dad’s interest in returning to RC racing but my Dad’s heart always lied in the older vintage vehicles and as I mentioned in last month’s Motorhead, once he saw Jim Dayotas’ Tamiya Lunch Box he was hooked on restoring 80’s Tamiya vehicles for his baby boy, this guy right here, Xander Anthony. For our first father/son restoration project my Dad miraculously dug out his original Tamiya Midnight Pumpkin from almost 30 years ago. The body shell was demolished on the truck but he had a spare Lunch Box van shell to use it its place. With your buddy Xander on the kitchen table

My poor mother could only being a Motorhead at heart, you know there will imagine what my Dad was up to now and her definitely be another on in the works. You heard it suspicions would be verified once dad got here first- Xander Y- OUT!! home from work to open the box. Inside was the reissued version of the Tamiya Midnight Pumpkin and a full bearing kit. Off we went for yet another project to add to my collection. With the HOURS: Midnight Pumpkin 15 Church Street Monday-Friday having a special place in 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Attleboro, MA my Dad’s heart, I knew this project was going to be one of his most enjoyable. Once it was built it was sprayed in a custom color that was formulated from Ford’s Torch Red mixed with a metallic additive then clearcoated. The stock wheels were www.dentproscollision.com scrapped and in their place a set of Chrome Traxxas wheels and tires were bolted on 6 Westly Avenue thanks to a set of West Warwick, RI 02893 custom 12mm hub 401-821-2332 adapters, giving the Specializing in truck a unique new personality. FIRST At the conclusion DENT of our Midnight REMOVAL Pumpkin build I Scratch and Dent Specials can only wonder what Vintage RC project my Dad will choose next for us. Personally, I have my eye on the Tamiya Bullhead, a HUGE Semi truck with twin motors and four wheel steering. It might be a few

bearings, new alloy wheels, tinted windows, and a flawless paint job in Pearl Fire Orange Metallic from the Honda motorcycles. After his original vintage RC Car was complete he set forth to put together a collection of other 80’s RC icon’s for his son to cherish forever. Our next acquisition was a reissued version of the Tamiya Monster Beetle. Originally making its debut in 1986 the Monster Beetle shared it’s underpinnings with the Subaru Brat and Frog, making it capable of using the endless hop up parts already on the market for its predecessors. Our Monster Beetle was finished in Synergy Green Metallic from the Chevrolet Camaro and has been a hit at a couple of RC events we attended to show it. Having now reignited his passion for building and modifying RC cars my Dad made somewhat of an impulse buy when he spotted a Blackfoot 3 on the shelf of the Hobby Store. The original Blackfoot was introduced in 1986 and was also a variation of the Subaru Brat, Frog, and Monster Beetle. The Blackfoot 3, released in 2011, was a dramatic improvement in the original design and also offered the possibility of added a second gearbox to make it four wheel drive. Thus far this is one of our favorite projects together. Once completed our Blackfoot 3 was painted Flame Blue Metallic from our friend’s Ford SVT Raptor, that was in for collision repair, so the timing was perfect to spray our RC truck with that brilliant shade of blue. A couple months then passed and our RC interests held steady until, without any notice, a package arrived at our home, addressed to

TheBrandon BuKaraguezian’s Generation 1978 Chevy Malibu
ED YESSAIAN
One of the most exciting parts of attending New England Dragway’s Junior Dragster program is watching these kids grow both as competitors and people in general. While a lot of us hate to admit it, the first time we get beat by one of the kids, we’re proud of how they have progressed into the NEW GENERATION of Drag Racing superstars. One of the brightest new stars, Brandon Karaguezian was by far, one of the deadliest competitors in Juniors, so it was no surprise when in 2014 when he started taking out some big names with his 1978 Chevrolet Malibu. This was just an experimental year for him, as prior to a few races that season he had just been driving the car to school and back. Eventually he convinced his father to let him try it on the track. By the next season, Brandon had the car figured out and started collecting his handful of runner-up finishes by eliminating racers that possessed 10 times his experience. That year he pulled double duty with both a Junior Dragster and a full sized car, but in 2016 he took no prisoners!! The Malibu, while it already started as a pretty cool cruiser, went through a series of small changes some planned and some unplanned. The first series of changes occurred at Southern NH Undertimes until the motor eventually let go. This was where a group of good friends took over to help get him back on track to finish the season in the upper ranks. The first big change to the car came by way of a heart transplant that dropped in a 406 small block with aluminum heads. Brandon thanks Craig Michaud and Ted Cook for their contributions to the engine. Teddy Mazzotta stepped up next to build a bulletproof transmission then

car in Hampstead, NH where Super Pro superstar Dan Christopher tuned it up and hand built a less restrictive exhaust system. This would take the car to the high 12 second passes down the track and put Karaguezian in the Winner’s circle multiple

Mike LeBlanc installed a floor shifter. Mike LeBlanc also notched the frame, built the rear end, and completed some body work after a small mishap on the track. Once LeBlanc was done with his part of the rebuild from the accident, an ALL-STAR TEAM of racers jumped into action to get the rest of the car together in just one week. Dan Christopher stepped in again, along with Brian Khoury, Brian Bell, Murray Family Racing, and Brandon’s father Raffe. By the time the team was done the car was run-

In 2016 alone, Brandon chalked up wins at the Mass Tuning Event, Chevy Fest, and won 3 King of the Hill races. He heads into 2017 with his sights set on the Street Eliminator and Pro Eliminator Championships and should have no problem finishing in the top ranks of both classes. We wish you well in 2017 Brandon, GOOD LUCK MY FRIEND!!!

CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE
“Damn! All of this because I want to drive my car?” Etch is furious when he cuts his steering wheel hard and the OUTLAW GTO wheel hops like a jack hammer and takes flight. The left front tire is the first part of the vehicle to lift off the ground. The nose lifts high off the blacktop. Both front wheels are up in the air now. The back tires are screaming and sending a cloud of smoke in its wake. The exhaust is so loud the gunfire is completely muffled to minimal puffs of air noises. The bullets soar past the GTO as it slams hard back down onto the highway surface. The Pontiac launches away from the group of State Police as they all scramble to get back into their police vehicles to give chase. Etch sees the other group of pursuing police cruisers approaching quickly down the highway, coming directly towards him, as he heads straight for them driving in the opposite direction on the wrong side of the highway. “So, they wanna play chicken and sees who swerves first? It’s not going
to be me!” The oncoming police cruisers start to swerve across the highway. Screeching tires, blaring sirens, flashing lights and gunfire happening all around that section of roadway. As the police cruisers swerve to avoid a head on crash, the OUTLAW GTO stays its course, and Etch never flinches or faulters in any way, shape or form. He is determined to give them a run for their money. The jet black Pontiac GTO avoids hitting any other vehicle by slithering like a snake inbetween the police cars at a high rate of speed. The pursuing police vehicles aren’t so fortunate as they begin to bounce of the highway barriers and each other. The approaching state police vehicles are traveling too fast to slow down and they start crashing into the other police vehicles. One state police vehicle hits the highway barrier sideways and soars over the rooftops of the police cars in a spiral motion and bursts into flames. The state trooper driving that vehicle lept from his police car before it crashed into

the highway barrier and watches the outcome from his spot on the blacktop. The other police officers and state troopers are scrambling away from the scene as two more police cars burst into flames caused by sparks from the now airborne state police vehicle and gas leaks due to their own impact crashes. Flames and black smoke fill the air while police officers open fire on the escaping GTO in the distance. The classic muscle car is traveling at a high rate of speed and the bullets never hit their target. Etch looks into his driver side mirror: “They want to crush my car and lock me up forever? They better do a lot more than that to catch me.”

By SERAFINO “JIMMY” CAZZANI Bling? Who needs bling. We need performance and endurance. The philosophy behind a Superboat Unlimited engine more closely mimics the needs of a Nascar or endurance racer than those of a drag car. One noted difference though we accelerate and decelerate continuously especially if the oceans kick up. Going from 45 to 65 to 5 thousand revs and then right up to our 7500 limit in a matter of several seconds is how we run. Marine engines are almost always under heavy load because water induced drag is significant and we still need to push air while accelerating our vessel’s mass. By rule we can run any commercially available engine block/heads and any cubic inches. I’ll briefly outline the motor’s foundation, my main focus will be on the turbo systems. The ALEX AND ANI’s Superboat motors are Oldsmobile based dry sump, super tall deck aluminum blocks manufactured by Keith Black mated to titanium valved Big Chief Oldsmobile port pattern cylinder heads. Wingren Nascar alloy cranks, Carrillo Rods, SPS Carr bolts and a strong somewhat light piston/pin combination round

things out. Our present displacement is 540 cubic inches with an rpm ceiling of 7500. In calm waters we’ll run at that rev ceiling for an entire 90 mile race except for the turns. Recently we upgraded these very reliable motors from superchargers to twin turbo boost systems. The former combination while powerful and durable limited our output. At levels beyond 1380 horsepower, even with chillers, intake temperatures became excessively hot and blower belt failure became likely. While
CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE
superchargers are a very effective means of boost for many applications we felt for our application turbocharging would be more efficient. Our target was 1900 horsepower but more importantly a high broad torque curve to accelerate us out of turns, off big waves and be able to better defeat the ocean’s hydrodynamic drag. 1700 ft lbs? That works Lol. The system’s water jacketed exhaust headers are custom fabricated and support four smallish Borg
Warner turbos nicely. The small turbos turn on quickly and aresufficient for our rev ceiling. Our entire exhaust is water jacketed right to the outlets because in a boat there are many things that can melt or burn in close proximity to the pipes. Our four air to water intercoolers are super efficient and represent a very significant improvement in intake charge temperature. The benefit is more timing, more boost and way more power, but the biggest improvement is in torque, almost 700 ft lbs more than blowers! It’s insane. These motors are outdrive breakers! Last season we battled the renowned Miss Geico and other great teams team tooth and nail. I mention Miss Geico because there is a history here of rubbing, banging and I really want to smack them! Although we lead races and set fastest laps, second place was the best we could muster against my very accomplished arch nemeses Scott Begovich and Marc Granet. Outdrive failures plagued us all season, to finish races we had to turn down the boost! Can you imagine a stone cold racer turning it down? It was one of the most difficult adjustments I’ve ever made. That, and usually running at 75% throttle to save drives. I’m done with that now. Our new Mercury M8R drives are much stouter than our old units and should put the power down like a tricked out nine inch!
if you’re so inclined. I’d be humbled to have a contingent of my friends from home down to hang out with us, enjoy the show and meet my dedicated team! It’s only a four hour ride. You’re all invited! Go to oparacing. org for details.
treacherous! Lol - This could be interesting..... We have giants to slay! I’m leading the ALEX AND ANI team into battle both guns loaded and taking no prisoners. Last year the ALEX AND ANI V Miss Geico fight lit up the web! This year the Geico guys are going down!!
On a funny note. It’s been proposed I live with Miss Geico’s throttleman Scott Begovich for the weekend to see if we can get on amicably, kind of like Days Of Thunder. He’s much larger than I am, but I’m older and more

Vin Moretti’s 1955
By KAYLA CONTI His interest in Ford Thunderbirds sparked in the late 80’s. That’s when Vinny More decided he had to own a clean 1955 Thunderbird. Though it took years of searching before he came across the right one, Vinny discovered this ’55 T-Bird through a Rizzo Ford advertisement in a local newspaper back in 1994. Within days the car was his. The fun began when Vinny and his son, Andrew, who was a teenager at the time, aended cruise nights and car shows during the summer months of the late 90’s. Needless to say, Vinny’s T-Bird won a few awards since he’s owned it. One being the “Achievement Award” at the World of Wheels car show. 24| Motorhead Magazine - April 2017

Through all the years Vinny has owned the car, he did all that was necessary to maintain it and keep it running like new. Although, there is only so much one can do to “keep up” a vehicle that is 60 years old before it’s time for a major restoration. John Conti, a long term friend of Vinny’s was the guy to see. In 2015, the total restoration was done at Conti’s Auto Service & Motorsports in Cranston, RI. Vinny pays very much aention to detail and the team at Conti’s does just the same. The T-Bird was totally stripped, minus the body coming off the chassis, due to the fact that the exterior paint was in prey good shape and the fenders were molded to the body. Aer every ac-

All the under hood components were completely refinished. With the vehicle having such low mileage, an engine rebuild was not necessary at this point, yet the engine aesthetics were addressed. In a year’s time, the car was back in Vinny’s hands for him to enjoy once again. Vinny’s love for Thunderbirds doesn’t stop there. He also proudly owns a 2003 Thunderbird 007 special edition-only 700 of which were made in the entire world, his being the 315th on the production line. Working hard his entire life allowed Vinny the pleasure of cruising in these old school and new school Thunderbirds on those hot summer days. 26| Motorhead Magazine - April 2017

A Final Departure
HEMI JOE SAYS FAREWELL!
By LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” VERNANCIO After 32 years in business and servicing the city of Warwick and surrounding areas, Mr. Joe Nadiger would like to wish everyone a gracious farewell to all of his friends, associates, customers, supporters, and fellow Motorheads! While he is known for his outrageously creative pig roasts held annually, he has also held an active scene repairing all makes and models and fine tuning hot rods. Although he is shutting down his business after success, he plans to build his own empire on his personal property building private hot rods in Foster during his new found free time.
With him he takes memories of adventurous police tows, one-of-a-kind build customizations, and years of knowledge from those he held interactions with. Of course he does plan on keeping the tradition of his infamous pig roasts and burnout affairs, as well as a possible newly planned “retirement” party to send him off with a bang. Motorhead would like to thank Joe for being a great contributor and asset to the automotive industry throughout the years and wishes Mr. “Hemi Joe” Nadiger luck in the future with his family and farm. There’s really no other felling like taking delivery of your first Mustang or Muscle Car, especially when you’re in your early teenage years. The first time you lay eyes on that aggressive stance, the first smell of the leather interior, the first feeling of that rumble that happens after your first turn of the key. Every one of us can recall what seemed like the greatest day of our life when we got behind the wheel of our very own piece of American History. For Jason Pjojian of Cranston RI, that amazing sense of ownership and pride came to reality this past summer when he got his hands on his immaculate 1997 SVT COBRA.

SPOTS ARE FREE!
Jason is the third owner of the car, but both of the first two owners were ridiculously obsessed with keeping it clean, garaged, and well maintained. As of this article the car only has 34,000 miles and doesn’t seem to have a single chip, scratch, or fingerprint anywhere on it. Jason credits the car’s current appearance and brilliant shine to his father Bob Pjojian, who shared many of his detailing secrets. Bob is currently in search of a new 2015 Mustang GT Convertible, which will be his fourth Mustang. So we know that Jason has a great role model to follow.

From the outside, the car appears to be mostly stock, with visual enhancements coming from only a handful of tasteful modifications. A Saleen S281 spoiler replaces the factory pedestal spoiler and 18 inch Steeda Pentar wheels shine brilliantly at each corner.

MOPAR ROOFER Jim Dayotas’ 1975 Hot Rod RV By XANDER ANTHONY Greetings Motorheads!! Welcome to another edition of The Xander Zone, starring Motorhead Magazine’s official Mopar Muscle loving baby boy Xander Yessaian. It’s not easy being only 3 months old and loving cars as much as I do, but with the help of my Dad and a few other great friends, I’ve been able to get it Xander Anthony Yessaian done, bringing you some of New England’s raddest and baddest Mopar creations. This month’s guest is a guy long time Motorhead readers might remember from the August 2012 issue, he’s the Wild One Jim Dayotas, who since we last saw his also reeled in the 2015 Wild Street Championship and has been on an impressive role ever since. Jim Dayotas’ name came back into the picture when he posted a picture of his vintage Tamiya Lunch Box Radio Controlled Dodge van. This one photo sparked my Dad towards digging out his own Tamiya Lunch Box van and during that restoration project my Dad told me about all the cars and trucks in the Dayotas collection. A roofer by trade, Dayotas prides himself on completing every single job he does with meticulous attention to detail, whether it’s a roof on your house or a project in his garage, he goes above and beyond to address every single nut and bolt which results in absolute perfection. My Dad joked with him one day that “…even Jim’s 36| Motorhead Magazine - April 2017
tow vehicle is probably modified”. Ironically, it actually is and it’s perhaps the coolest tow vehicle on the premises of New England Dragway. Pulling Jim’s Wild Street Champion 1968 Dodge Dart is this 1975 Dodge Travco RV which is in phenomenal condition for a mostly original piece. Jim started some small restoration projects on the RV a little over a year ago and thus far the results clearly show what a labor of love it has become. Starting with the drivetrain, Jim pulled the original 440 and punched it out to a 500ci stroker with Eagle rotating assembly, roller rockers, a custom cam, and a set of Edelbrock EZ Street cylinder heads. Cooling chores are enhanced by a stock radiator that was rebuilt and modified to a ¾ inch three row for greater flow and capacity. Custom air ducting directs all
CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE
airflow straight through the radiator. Backing up the heart of the beast is a 727 Transmission built by Graveson Transmissions in Grafton, MA. Just a
turn of the key and you can hear it come to life, breathing through a completely custom exhaust. The exhaled gasses start out through a set long tube headers, past a full 3 inch exhaust, a set of Flowmaster 40 series mufflers, then exit out the tailpipes. The sound is awesome and of course you wouldn’t expect any less from the Wild One. To insure that the RV handles and stops predictably Jim went through the entire braking system, rebuilding the factory front disk set up and beefing up the rear drums. Firestone airbags sit in the rear of the Travco with Bilstein dampers supporting all four corners. This creates a pretty stout stance and just sitting still, Dayotas’ RV looks pretty badass. Part of that badass appearance comes from the customized Peterbuilt bumper that was extensively modified and grafted to the front end of the RV. And believe it or not the beautiful exterior paint work was done by Dayotas himself, at home, after countless hours or prep and masking. The finished product, like everything he does, is show quality. Dayotas told us the interior was just as flawless. As we stepped up inside the headquarters of the Wild Street Champ’s radical ride, the first thing to catch my eye was the gorgeous high end wood work that made up most of the interior. Dayotas was quick to tell me that the majority of the interior was actually original, and in phenomenal shape, with the carpets being the only parts that needed replacement. From front to back, the Travco is just a masterpiece and a true piece of American Muscle history. It was something unique that I really enjoyed touring and as I exited and headed towards Dayotas’ garage, something else in his collection caught my eye, a 1934 Plymouth. The Plymouth was another work in progress but is quickly nearing its completion. In its current state it already looks to be another showstopper and of course you know as soon as it’s done your buddy Xander will be right there to bring you another Mopar Gem!! You heard it here first- Xander Y- OUT!!

NEW ENGLAND DRAG RACING FANS
THE BEST IN MOTORSPORTS This photo taken on Sunday, June 5th, 2016, at 9:43 AM shows the NED pit area lively with fans, despite a dismal weather forecast and rain showers. The fans came anyway! Tom McCarthy Photo.

help make drag racing great and let’s face it, the fans are the ones who the racing sponsors gear their advertising for so the fans are a vital part of racing. Remember, no bucks - equals no Buck Rogers. So this story and photos is for the New England drag racing fans. In the opinion of Motorhead Magazine, the greatest racing fans in all of motorsports are found here in New England and we have proof!
of the NHRA Mello Yello series last year, Jeremy Cross of Pomfret, Vermont got the kids out of bed on Sunday, June 5th, 2016, at 6:30 AM for a trip to the NHRA, New England Nationals. It was a rainy, gloomy Sunday when they arose with more rain the forecast. But the kids were headed to their first drag race and his son Jeremy Jr., age 9, was hoping to meet John Force and see him race. “My dad told me about him” he said while beaming, “he’s won like 15 championships.” The young man related this to me in a brief interview that Sunday, with a big smile on his face.
What we saw as racing reporters during the 2016 racing season confirmed this for us; New England race fans just can’t be beat! Take for example a few cases we present to you here, think about it and we are sure you’ll agree, the New England area has some of the most hearty fans of This photo taken at 12:46PM on the afternoon of June 4th, 2016, in the New England anywhere, anyplace, Dragway pit area shows 1320’ of racing fans, shoulder to shoulder. The team haulers anytime.
The little guy had not seen nor heard a single race car engine this day, due to persistent rain, rain drops were dripping off his nose as we spoke, yet here he was, rain soaked and having a blast with his family at a drag race. His elation was due to NHRA T/F car driver Terry McMillen, of Elkhart, IN, who bestowed an enormous Top Fuel car drag slick upon the family for coming to the drag race … in the pouring rain. Jeremy caught my eye happily rolling the tire along in the pits.
While more often than not, our stories and photographs are geared towards the gear heads and garages that race every weekend; where would we be without race fans? It’s the race fans that
extended from the Tech area in the pits all the way to the score-boards and as can be seen in this photo, it was trailer-to-trailer fans, packed in like sardines when the cars During the New were warming up that sunny afternoon. I asked his dad, Jeremy (Sr.) why with a forecast of rain for the day, did they drive two hours to a drag race with a shaky forecast? His reply was, “There was a chance they could get the race in, the tickets were already paid for and I knew the drivers and the cars would still be in the pits.” So Mr. Cross gathered up his tribe and they drive two hours to New England Dragway, in Epping, NH with
Continued on page 41
On the previous day, Saturday, June 4th, 2016, the Jumbotron at New England Dragway had a big thank you on it from the NHRA, to the New England Dragway fans, for a sold out drag race. The NHRA deal with New England Dragway is four years into what was originally a five year package and the fan base is growing. Just prior to the 2016, New England Nationals, the track added a new section of grand stands to the north side of the track. All new state of the art seating that will be there for many years to come. And every one of the new seats were sold out for the 2016 New England Nationals. Front and center in the middle of this photo is 9 year old Jeremy Cross, of Pomfret, Vermont, who received this Top Fuel car tire from NHRA T/F car driver Terry McMillen during the New England Nationals in June of 2016. The race day was rained out, but that never dampened this young man’s spirits! Tom McCarthy Photo.
hopes of seeing the race. With Mr. Jeremy Cross were Marie Cole, her daughter Riley 15, Jeremy Jr. (9) and his twin Josie age (9). These fans are typical of the New England fans that love drag racing. They are loyal, dedicated and like the Winter Soldiers they are descended from, nothing will hold them back. Once they get it in their mind to commit, they do so with gusto. That the NHRA drivers like Terry McMillen, Leah Pritchett and others were out there signing autographs in the rain on a Sunday morning, speaks volumes about the NHRA, it’s drivers, and why drag racing fans are the best fans in motorsports. Especially the New England ones - hard core and dedicated are two words that come to mind right away.
What exactly motivates the fans is anyone’s guess and I’m sure it’s different for each individual one but there is no denying the power of nitromethane as part of the equation. Every time the air in the pits turns to a yellow-green fog and the cackle of nitromethane fed engines assaults the senses, fans flock to the sound. Some fans even bring their own gas masks to the races, just to get closer to the cars. Interestingly enough, It’s possible that the CH3NO2 I’ve yet to see chemical compound known more commonly as Nitromethane is a nitro fan with what makes NHRA drag racing ear muffs on or fans a bit different than other fans ear plugs in if from other motorsports. Tom they are wearMcCarthy Photo. ing a gas mask.
Whatever the case, the sport of drag racing has the best fans in motor sports, and in New England some of the best call New England Dragway home. During the New England Dragway 50th Anniversary celebration in September of 2016, despite threatening skies, thousands of the New England faithful came to NED anyway to see the Funny Cars, one more time. And when the King & Marshall F/C oiled down the track for a one hour and fourteen minute delay to kick off the night show – the fans stayed through that too. So here’s to the fans of drag racing and a special salute to the fans of New England where we all know how to weather a bad storm, wait out the bad parts, and revel in the success of our sport – to the fans – THANK YOU!!!
Alexis DeJoria, during a rain delay at the New England Nationals, signs yet another autograph for a fan who can’t wait to tell her how glad he is that she comes to New England Dragway, in Epping, NH, to race. Tom McCarthy Photo.

12 VOLT NEWS Automotive Sound Connectivity
GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR. A Custom Car Stereo Center
Lots of us spend so much time in our car, and it has some perks. The best one is that your car is a great place to listen to your tunes. Catching up on new releases, listening to old favorites, all have a great way of making commutes or racing around Town more enjoyable. Most car manufacturers today offer an iPod connection as a standard option in their post 2006 vehicles. If you do not know whether you have this option just look at your radio deck in your car, the standard connection is an auxiliary input. This would be labeled as ‘aux’. If you have this input you can purchase an auxiliary cable that would run from your iPod’s headset connector to the auxiliary input on the radio deck. From there it’s simply a matter of selecting the aux channel from the radio. But how do you hook up your iPod to your Car Stereo for the best possible sound? For radio decks that do not have this feature there are several options to connect your iPod: Using an FM Transmitter This is the easiest way to connect an audio device to your car stereo if you don’t have an auxiliary input (or Line In). It is unfortunately also the worst sounding solution. An FM transmitter works by taking the audio input from your iPod and converting it FM radio signals. It accomplishes this by being an actual mini-FM radio station. It compresses the signal heavily, does the nasty FM conversion, and then sends it out as radio waves. FM transmitters are adaptors that connect to your iPod from the headset jack and broadcast the music to an available FM radio station. This solution works particularly well in areas where there are not too many radio stations. FM iPod transmitters are not recommended for more urban areas due to the large number of radio stations, and overlapping between stations. They work great for road trips on open roads. The typical cost ranges between $20-$50.
iPod jack located somewhere in the passenger compartment. Sometimes it is in the glove compartment, often it is right on the front of the stereo. Similarly, most newer after-market car stereo units have a line-in jack, either directly on the front of the unit or behind the moving faceplate. These jacks are 3.5mm female stereo types that use the exact same type of connector that is on the end of your
Here’s a quick recap: headphones are low-impedance devices that expect a fairly low-level signal. When you connect your iPod to a stereo (whether it’s in your car or in your home), using the headphone jack will cause a couple of things. First, volume drop is prevalent. You have to jack up the volume on your iPod all the way and then probably turn up your stereo too. Because of the impedance mismatch, you will also likely hear a lack of bass response. These two factors make the headphone jack less than ideal as a sound source for your car stereo.
iPod headphones. So to use this connection method, simply run a cable from the headphone jack of your iPod to the line-in on your car stereo. This method beats both the FM transmitter and the Cassette Adaptor, hands-down in terms of audio quality. You have a direct, shielded, connection between the iPod’s output signal and your car stereo’s input preamplifier. This results in a dramatic decrease in noise and a dramatic increase in frequency response and dynamic range. CD deck with built-in aux input. This is the most cost effective way of installing an iPod in your car without sacrificing quality. CD decks can range anywhere between $50-$1000, the difference being the features and sound quality of the unit. If your goal is simply to connect your iPod a basic model will be more than enough. The sound quality will be crystal clear as though you were listening to a CD in your car. iPod Line Out to Car Stereo Line In The headphone jack is designed to drive headphones, not stereos.
Fortunately, most iPods have a line out jack that is specifically designed to put out the type of signal that a stereo wants to hear. That’s the good news. The bad news is that there is no physical jack on the iPod to get to the line out signal. Instead, it is hidden away inside the dock connector on pins 2,3 and 4. The good news? You can buy a very inexpensive device that connects the line out signal to a 3.5mm jack--just the kind of thing you can hook a cable into. Finally you can also have A Custom Car Stereo Center hard wire your iPod to your existing radio. This entails running a wire from the back of your radio and having it come out of the glove box compartment. Depending on your vehicle if you have radio controls on the steering wheel you will also be able to control the iPod’s controls through the steering wheel. On average the cost will be around $150-$200. Direct any questions or future Article Topics to: Motorhead Magazine c/o A Custom Car Stereo Center 1174 Atwood Avenue Johnston, RI 02919 (401) 946-0010 ACustomCar@verizon.net
The Cassette Adaptor The next level up in sound quality is the cassette adaptor. This device is light years better than the FM transmitter route because it provides a semi-protected signal path for your audio. Sound quality out of a cassette adaptor, while certainly not audiophile-grade, is light-years ahead of an FM transmitter. There is very little noise, and you can get a good signal regardless of the outside world’s continuous beam of bad FM and RFI. If you have a cassette player you can purchase a cassette adaptor. This is essentially a typical cassette with a wire attached which is hooked up to the iPod’s headset jack. The sound quality is a little sub par but it remains clear enough. The cost of an adaptor is generally around $15. Of course, if your car stereo doesn’t have a cassette player, this option won’t work. Headphone Jack to Car Stereo Line In If your car stereo has an input jack, life suddenly gets a lot better. On newer cars, there is often a dedicated line-in/ CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE
