As a Dynojet owner and GM Tuner, I have an intuitive knowledge of what works performance wise and what doesn’t. Like most performance enthusiasts, I scan forums and read tech articles looking for the next killer performance modification. As I meet new customers and discuss modification to their rides, I find a lot of useless performance modifications that cost money and actually reduce overall performance. I’m not here to bash manufacturers, but to make all of us better performance consumers. After all, we are all looking to maximize the performance of our rides and not waste money. Recently, I received a call to do a tune on a 2010 Camaro SS that a buddy of mine just installed a set of Kooks Long Tube Headers and intermediate pipes. Jamal’s Camaro SS was a pretty sweet ride, being a 2010 it only had 17,000 miles and was a 6-speed manual. He had some cool interior LED light mods which gave the interior a red glow when you opened the doors. Definitely less harsh than the stock factory interior lighting. He also had a few performance mods he informed me about. The first mod was a JET mass air flow sensor. On a factory car without any modifications, it will adjust the air fuel ratio of the motor to run a little leaner and produce more power. Jamal’s also installed a K & N Cold Air Intake. The headers and the intake with a stock tune and stock mass air flow sensor the car should run about 12-15

percent lean. Since the car wasn’t stock anymore I told Jamal to get the stock MAF sensor and I would reprogram the computer with the OEM sensor in place and he could sell the JET sensor on EBAY or one of the forums. There really isn’t anything wrong with the JET MAF sensor, it really becomes obsolete once additional mods are installed. At a retail price around $200.00 it really is a waste of money. Jamal would have been better off having me custom tune the car with the stock sensor, it would be a little more expensive, but I could also adjust several parameters to maximize performance. Jamal’s car was also modified with an Airaid Poweraid throttle body spacer. I had a funny feeling about this spacer too. They claimed, “The POWERAID Throttle Body Spacer is designed to enhance off-idle torque from 800 rpm to approximately 3,000 rpm. The spacer utilizes it’s unique, patented Helix Bore design to spin the incoming air charge as it passes through the throttle body spacer. The spinning air action boosts the velocity of the incoming air and contributes to better atomization of the air/ fuel mixture as the air charge enters the combustion chamber. The end result is more part-throttle torque and improved mid-range power.” The above quote was actually taken from their website, which I highly doubt works and is probably not measurable. The spacer retails for $120.00. I can adjust the electronic throttle response in the tune to enhance the throttle response of the motor.

We eliminated the spacer and immediately without a tune change gained 4HP and 2FTLB’s of torque. The MAP sensor also read to 101KPA on our final pull on the dyno. The spacer didn’t produce any better off-idle torque and became a restriction as the rpm’s climbed. As you can see some aftermarket parts actually will hurt the performance of your car. Bavarian Style: Fred Elkhaouli’s 1987 M6 LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” PONTIAC-VERNANCIO This month at Motorhead Magazine, we decided to look at vehicles that were a little bit different and shared a unique appeal. In our journey we not only looked at American Muscle and Exotics, but also found something with a little bit more of a European edge. In our findings, we happened

to stumble upon Fred’s 1987 BMW M6. Now normally you would think that this would be the standard German imported car, but there embellished some distinct features that made it stand out from the rest. With an impressive forty nine thousand miles, this

beauty is barely broken in with its mated 5 speed transmission and M88 (3.5L) engine. It displays a flawless all leather interior and sunroof, and holds all the bells and whistles of comfort that its current owner could ask for. Yes, most of it is stock, however if you were to see the differences from before to the after you would be completely astounded. This vehicle was actually a basic rotted roller that had been sitting for quite some time and needed a complete overhaul.

While many people laughed at the capabilities of the car, Fred had it set in his mind that he would use his creativity to restore his “True Blue” and make it a little bit different while setting himself up for the challenge. He set it up on Bilsteins, bought most of his extensive list of parts from Inskip and Bavarian Autosports, and spent 3 years with his dedicated crew at R and S Autobody and Repair (about 500 hours) gutting everything out from top to bottom to bring something beautiful back to life. After much prepping, he would finish it in a Porsche Speedster Blue and make it have a two tone appearance meshed with an original BMW black and hold aftermarket side skirts and bumpers to give it an intimidating appearance. Given the history of the M6 and its acclaim to be the second fastest BMW ever built of its time next to the M1, it can be said that this vehicle has a pretty good acceleration on the pedal. While Mr. Elkhaouli’s has exquisite styling, it also will travel zero to sixty in a mere six seconds flat bone stock according to BMW’s standard ratings. If all goes well, we might see the new set up in action at the Mustangs of Massachusetts Spring Dyno Day, but until then, I’m sure rolling at almost 700rwhp isn’t exactly boring either.

LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” PONTIAC-VERNANCIO While most colors change dark during these next few months, we couldn’t help but notice the astounding glitz of a beautiful green and gold 1934 Plymouth Coupe owned by the DiRaimo family. This car was a gem purchased in the heart of San Diego, California that ended up traveling to the North East in Connecticut. Upon its arrival, it had served its purpose at the local stock car track and then ended up sitting in the back of a service station for quite some time. It was discovered by a Mr. Sullivan from Scituate, Rhode Island who scooped it up and built it into a drag car that held a 240 Z engine at Connecticut Dragway long before its doors were shut. At that time is showed just the coach, rails, and a basic engine. Mr. Tom DiRaimo, Sr. ran across the vehicle in 1990 when it was just the coach, engine, and rear fenders. His son Thomas Diraimo, Jr. was about eight years old at that time and watched as his father worked on the car for six years. It happened to appear that Thomas Junior’s love for body

work became evident with this first father and son project. Thomas DiRaimo, Jr. currently is now the manager of Dent Pro in West Warwick, Rhode Island. Upon looking for parts to purchase, the DiRaimos discovered that the car being a PE coupe with a rumble seat is only one of 15,000 built in 1934. The car was repainted by the students from the Coventry High School Auto Tech class of 1995, and has been to many cruise nights and car shows over the years. One of the awards presented was best paint. While there are still some original parts, the car is now running with a 355 roller engine with Edelbrock aluminum heads, a 750cfm Edelbrock carburetor, 350 turbo transmission with a B & M shift kit, Mustang II front end, and a 1978 Corvette independent rear end with 355 gears. Mr. Tom DiRaimo states that he doesn’t show the car anymore and that even with the goodies in it that it won’t reach over 65mph by driver decision. When it’s parked in different places, he likes to place a sign on it that says “Reborn to be Driven”. Since he was sixteen he always wanted an older coupe and it took him thirty one years to fulfill his wishes of getting one. It has found a forever home in the DiRaimo family and will continue to be their family treasure.

MR. AND MRS. JOE BALLARD’S COBRA’S ACROSS AMERICA ED YESSAIAN It’s been a couple months since we’ve had a submission for the “Military Muscle” series, so when Joe and Nikki Ballard told me about their trek home from Joe’s Naval station in Port Hueneme, California, I decided to inquire further into their journey and was not surprised to find out that they made the trip side by side in a pair of SVT COBRA’S! Joe Ballard is a Navy Electronics Technician 1st Class Petty Officer, who is approaching nearly 15 years of experience in the Armed Forces. He has spent those years in many different places around the globe, including one year in Bahrain. Back home in the states he spent 4 ½ years aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 aircraft carrier, he spent 2 years in Groton, Connecti-

cut , and most recently spent almost three years in California, which concluded in a cross country road trip with his lovely bride. If I had to put money on it, I’d say the wife’s 1996 Mystic COBRA gave him a run for his money, but of course his own car is built to the tee as well, so you never know. Joe’s 1995 SVT COBRA has 243,000 miles on the body, but you would never know it. The car was most recently hand-picked to represent the model year of 1995 in Ford’s “50 years of Mustangs” display at SEMA . Joe picked up the car in 2004, and through the past decade it had gone through quite a few changes, including drivetrain upgrades and suspension tweaks. Currently powering the car is a stock 302 with ported and milled GT40 heads. He is in the process of

pulling the E-cam and going with an FTI, with a very, very, rare ROUSH Stage 3 intake manifold topping it all off. Exhaust duties are handled by MAC long-tube headers, Mac Pro-chamber midpipe, and Flowmaster cat-back. That combination gives the car an aggressive but not obnoxious tone that is just enough to announce his arrival. With the increase in power, Joe needed to beef up the rest of the drivetrain and accomplished this first with a Pro-motion T5 transmis-

sion topped with an MGW shifter. Hiding within, is also a King Cobra clutch and Fidanza aluminum flywheel. An FRPP aluminum driveshaft connects it all to the rear, which also consists of a handful of upgraded components. A Detroit Tru-trac differential spins FRPP 3.73 gears and Moser 31 spline axles, to put the power to the ground and help twirl the Authentic Saleen chrome wheels. Then of course once he gets going, he also needs to stop, which he quite nicely addressed by Cobra 10th anniversary calipers, Baer Eradispeed rotors, and stainless steel hoses. Tokico adjustable shocks and struts help create a killer stance, and top to bottom, there aren’t too many other COBRA’S out there that can outshine Joe’s bright red 1995. Except maybe that 1996 Mystic COBRA driven by his wife Nikki!!

runner intake. Intake Manifold Runner Control’s are deleted and finally an Accufab throttle body is bolted to the intake. Exhaling comes by way of some really well-made American Racing Headers that send the gases through a 3 inch X-Pipe, and out through Magnaflow mufflers. To maintain control of the Mystic, Nikki short throws an MGW shifter that’s bolted to a T45 transmission then a carbon fiber driveshaft spins the stock 8.8 rear end housing that is stuffed with a Detroit Truetrac and 4.10’s. Power is great, but handling is another piece of the puzzle. This is where chassis, suspension, and brake upgrades make a world of difference. To stiffen up the body itself, a set of subframe connectors was welded on and a strut tower brace and rear shock tower brace cap off the suspension. A Tubular front suspension with coilovers significantly improves the ride, with Bilsteins dampening each corner. Cobra brakes, Eradispeed rotors, and stainless hoses bring the Mystic to a

A Kellogg forged crank, Scat Forged rods, and Diamond Pistons assure that as the build goes on, over 1000hp is possible without a worry. screeching halt when needed. Having known Joe and Nikki for over a decade now, I have had the chance to drive both cars and have also owned similar vehicles. Both of their cars are an absolute blast to drive and it’s hard to say which I’d prefer. There has always been that 5.0 vs 4.6 argument and both Joe and I can agree (cause we both own one of each) that they are two completely different animals. Both have unique characteristics that make you love them each equally. Personally, I’d love to just have the opportunity to make an amazing cross country journey the way they did, side by side, in two incredible cars taking in the world one mile at a time. With Joe having just been reactivated, who knows where the Navy will take him but for now he will have a great story to tell his grandkids about a trip with his wife and two Cobras taking him from one coast to the other.

I heard this vehicle approaching long before I ever put eyes on it this past fall at a Saturday Night Car Show held in Pomfret, Connecticut.

Seriously, how many 1969 Jaguar XKE Pro-Street Funny Cars do you see in your lifetime? Well, here is one that is truly an awesome ride and should be appreciated by anyone who loves classic cars and trucks.

I was standing next to my show truck when I saw this impressive 1969 Jaguar XKE turn off the main road and enter the car show. The ground began to tremble with every foot it travelled closer to the bunch of us standing at the entrance to the popular Tri-State Cruisers Saturday Cruise Night.

When Bike Mike came over to my show truck on display to ask for a copy of MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE we started a conversation about his cool classic Jaguar and now here it is featured in this months issue of the magazine.

That evening, more than two hundred show vehicles attended the venue because it was a very nice day and the weather was perfect for a summer time cruise to destinations anywhere across the region.

He told me that his classic 1969 Jaguar XKE was packing a punch with the 406 SBC Performance Motor with roller rockers, roller cam, roller crank, Manley Heads and a 750 Holley carburetor.

There were more than two show vehicles but this one stood out from the rest. And I mean stood out.

This rare Jaguar also features a TH350 Tranny built with a B&M Super Hole Shot Torque Converter and a B&M Pro-Shifter.

Spectators and show vehicle owners alike walked right over to this gorgeous ride as soon as Bike Mike backed into a parking spot right next to my truck. You couldn’t ignore it. It was too loud and had a presence about it. It caught everyone’s ears,

Lastly, the thing you should be scanning for is lubrication products. Oxidation can ELECTRIC RANGES occur in all oils that are in contact with starting at air, including stored lubricants. The base oil and additive combination will affect the rate of oxidation and the presence of thickener in the grease can increase the degradation rate. Increasing the FRIDGES starting at temperature by which the lubricant is stored can double this oxidation rate as well, hence why there are temperature guides on the sides on grease tubs. To be on the safe side, the maximum recommended storage time for lithium greases and lubricating oils is a year, while calcium complex greases are weighed in at a steady six months. Check the manufactures’ labels on your products for more specifics.

For 2015, Gm has released the new Corvette Z06, the high-performance variant of the new for 2014 Corvette Stingray. The big news here is the 650hp supercharged LT4 engine, a small block engine with 6.2 liters of displacement. ability to go anywhere, do anything and make the whole experience fun.

Some things in life can’t be properly explained.

This thought process was brought to bear in 1988, when my wife, Dianne, and I rented a RED Jeep in Mexico. In our opinion, there was no other vehicle to rent. Sure enough we had a wonderful time riding through the Yucantan peninsula. Once home, we both knew it was time to purchase a RED CJ7.

One of those things is: Why anyone would want to do a ground up restoration on a 1986 Cj7 Jeep (the last year this model was manufactured)? Neighbors said (as the Jeep stood crippled in the driveway) “Why don’t you just get a fiberglass tub, paint it and call it a day”? Best friends and family said, “Do you have any idea of how much time and money this is going to cost you to do it properly”? The answer to the first question was, “I don’t want a fiberglass tub; I want it to be original with as much of the factory tub as possible”. As to the second question... no, I had no idea! I had always wanted a Jeep NOT just a Jeep, but a RED Jeep. To me it represented a vehicle that had the 28| Motorhead Magazine - December 2015

We bought our RED Jeep when it was only 4 years old, a tender young age when all the metal was intact. It actually had floors with no view of the road, sides that could hold water (not that we would want it to), a back bed that could carry anything and an engine that had some ability to perform properly-emission controls truly hampered its ability. It was everything we could have hoped for. It carried fire wood for

986 JEEP CJ7 our winter fires, made its way through any weather conditions, but most important it helped create wonderful memories of fun times with family and friends on the beach in Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Fishing, swimming, picnics and lobster dinners just would not have been the same without the RED Jeep to get us to those deserted and beautiful beach areas. As time went by, the Jeep matured and grew a few additional features: a cargo carrier in the front for an outboard motor, fishing poles and bikes. A cargo carrier in the back for a Zodiac, grill and who remembers what. It also developed a loud music system (for those times on the beach when it wouldn’t disturb the neighbors). Unfortunately, as all the wonderful memories were being made, the Jeep itself was disappearing. Not really noticeable at first, but one day we could see the road through the floor. Rubber floor mats solved that problem for a couple of years. Then the 4 side “ribs” began to disintegrate and soon they really weren’t there at all. But the breaking point was when the engine lost its will to live. We could deal with the rotting metal, but what to do with a Jeep that didn’t want to run?

As an afterthought... we know that a restored vehicle doesn’t belong around salt water but some people restore their vehicles to show or drive on Sundays, we restored our RED Jeep to use and yes, someday it will probably need to be restored again. But by then there will be many more happy memories and the project once again will be worth it!

Well, according to John Conti of Conti’s Service, there was only one thing to do. Conti’s would rebuild the motor, and while they were doing that I should start to restore the Jeep to its 1986 condition. His argument went something like, “Why would you put a new engine in THAT body”? He had a point, and so it began an eleven year restoration project. Eleven years is a long time but the first six years don’t really count, as the Jeep sat in our garage in pieces. The problem was that I didn’t know how to weld and after taking the Jeep apart there was a lot of welding that needed to be done. John came to the rescue by introducing me to Vinny Sorandes. Every Tuesday and Thurday night for almost two years, Vinny would show up at our house to help with the restoration. First the body tub was restored then the frame was sandblasted, painted and reassembled with all new parts. Finally off it went to Artie’s Collision Center, then back to Conti’s to have James Conti rebuild the engine, and both front and rear differentials. The stock transmission was fine and all the components were installed into the chassis. A stainless steel exhaust system was tig welded and installed. Artie’s Collision completed all the necessary body work and the final blocking then applied the Imron red top coat. Then it was back to Conti’s again for complete wiring and an MSD timing curve electronic programmable control unit, to give the engine an improved power band, with minimal “smog” components. Left out of the story was all the heartache, disappointment and setbacks; those would be too painful to remember! As to the question, was it worth it? For the first couple of months we were afraid to drive it and felt that it wasn’t... then off to Martha’s Vineyard and the beach. All of a sudden all the old memories, fun and adventures returned and our smiles would have told anyone that asked, YES the project was worth it! CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

The Do’s and Don’ts of Buying a Remote Car Starter GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR. A Custom Car Stereo Center

The subject of this article will mainly be centered on the key things you don’t want to do when buying a remote car starter this season, with a few do’s thrown in as well. Keep in mind these are basically universal truths. Even if you don’t buy from A Custom Car Stereo Center, sticking to these will definitely pay off! Rule #1 is certainly the most important of all… DON’T buy a remote car starter system from one place, and have it installed at another!! Whether it’s the internet, auto parts place, or some random Black Friday deal, buying from one place and having it installed somewhere else has the potential for disaster. First, imagine dropping your vehicle off for the day to have your remote car starter installed. The anticipation and excitement grows as the day goes by and it’s almost time to go pick up your awesome new convenience feature! All of that excitement turns to frustration as the shop calls you to let you know the remote start you brought in isn’t working properly. Now what do you do?? They’ve already installed the complete system, so you’re forced to pay for the installation, ship the main control unit back to the place you got it from, and hope they get it taken care of and back to you in a reasonable amount of time. Once you get it back, assuming they were even an authorized dealer and the warranty was good, you then have to pay the technician to re-install and program it all over

again. Not only is there a cost involved that just negated any saving you initially had, but you’ve also been inconvenienced by having to drop your vehicle off multiple times to be worked on. So much for your new “convenience system” huh? Now, assume you had bought your remote car start from the same shop. If the product had an issue, you wouldn’t have a care in the world! The technician simply walks in the stockroom, picks up another unit, programs it and your vehicle is ready to go right on time. It’s a fact that installation is the single most important thing when it comes to a remote starter, so important, that most companies won’t even warranty their product unless the selling authorized dealer did the installation! I as a mobile electronics technician install numerous car remote starts each year, and they become intimately familiar with the wiring, programming, and intricacies of the systems I install. When you ask that same technician to install a system they are not familiar with, it’s going to take longer, with more potential headaches. The last thing you want are return trips to fix random programming issues. It’s kind of like taking your windows computer into an Apple store for service. Apple and Windows based PC’s are both computers right? Sure they are, but they are definitely not

the same! Rule #2 is….. DO ask what the warranty is on the system! Any reputable remote car starter manufacturer will warranty the main equipment for the life of the vehicle. The remotes for the systems themselves will vary from one to two years. Mainly due to the remotes undergoing a decent amount of abuse over their lives, being dropped, getting wet, etc. Make sure the shop installing the system will also be warrantying the installation labor. The manufacturer of the automatic starter will warranty the parts, but the shop will be the one footing the warranty of the installation. This is something where we strongly suggest going to the location you’re thinking about using, and checking out their facilities. Have they been in business for a while? Do their facilities look like they are serious about doing the best job for their customer possible? Just being in business for a long time doesn’t equal quality. You can really tell a lot about a business by the way they handle and present themselves. Check their reviews! Do they have quality control procedures in place to make sure employees don’t take shortcuts that could endanger you or the people around the vehicle? (I am talking about multiple thousands of pounds of vehicle starting while unattended!

UP IN FLAMES A FIREMAN’S TRIBUTE

LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” PONTIAC-VERNANCIO Sometimes in life you develop a calling, or a passion for what you were destined to do and you live it every day. Some fulfill their dreams by making vast amounts of money, or jetting away to the nearest luxuries. Some hold a special place in their hearts for putting their lives on the line in order to help others, and making an ultimate sacrifice. These warriors entail policemen, military, and most important of all firemen. It was a pleasure to meet Mike DeLessio of the Jamestown fire department this November while he showed us how he holds his passion for fighting with fire. Mike was more than eager to show us his 1993 Harley Davidson Electra Glide which was literally “engulfed” in flames. He originally found this white standard police motorcycle at an auction, and it had been sitting for roughly ten years. He restored it back to original condition, only with a twist which would be the painting of the flames and a glitzy red on the bike by the infamous “Paint Doctor” Vincent Digiulio to show off his passion for his way of life as a firefighter. He has owned the bike for two years and plans on riding the bike through the local parades. Mr. DeLessio also introduced a volunteer named Lewis Kitts into the equation, who has a strong association with the fire department, EMS, and the fire museum next door. Inside the fire museum holds a 1925 American LeFrance with 720 original miles, an 1859 handtub which took over 20 men to operate, a 1894 and 1946 LaFrance, and a 1947 Dodge that would lead the way to most local emergencies. Outside you can also find a 9/11 memorial which holds an original steel beam from the World Trade Center tower. Jamestown’s Fire and EMS station holds about 136 volunteers as well as an infamous ladder truck, three pumpers, two tankers, three rescues, and a boat for marine rescues as well. This could possibly be one of the largest organizations for volunteers in Rhode Island. Mike and his crew are more than willing to educate all visitors about the risks and benefits of being on the line of duty as well as producing a great team. Not only is he a dedicated family man at home, but he makes sure that other families are safe as well by going above and beyond in performance with his team to ensure a greater quality of assistance within the city of Jamestown. This Harley Davidson not only shows a symbol of freedom, but also a mission among the brotherhood of firefighters and EMS that encourages honor, courage, and valor within.

To make that kind of power, you need a solid foundation

When Motorhead owner Lou Cicerone told me to try and find a feature car that is a little different than my usual contributions, it took me a while to think of one car that was like nothing I have ever written about before. I turned to some social media outlets and put out the request for everyone to send me their Hot Rods, Race Cars, and Project Cars. And from the dozens of entries I received, there was nothing that stood out the way TJ Botelho’s bright green S2000 did. As many of you know, I’ve been into Mustangs Veterans Memorial Parkway for over 25 30 years and although I do appreciate all East Providence, RI 02914 kinds of other Muscle Cars, I’ve never strayed from my “comfort zone”. But(401) deep down inside there m Ph. 787-6499 is a small place in my heart for something that I will refer to as a “mistress”, one of the only things w that th h temporarily pulled me away from my love for Mustangs. This is one badass Ford Mustang. Manufactured in 1991, this Mustang GT only has 92,000 original miles. The owner, Mike Karmozym, found this vehicle parked in a garage where it was stored for six years and was in very good condition. This Mustang GT features a 347 stroker motor and houses trick flow 195cc aluminum heads with all new trick flow push rods and 1.6 roller rockers. The motor also features Eagle crank, pistons, connecting rods, new x-cam, an MSD ignition set up with a 6al fully adjustable box. The transmission is a fully built World Class T5 transmission 5-speed. This tranny was optioned instead of going with an automatic because of higher performance availability. The owner hopes after some engine modifications and upgrades that this Mustang will put out ap-

HIGH PERFORMANCE SPECIALISTS proximately 500-550 horsepower. Mike will eventually be installing a Garrett 60mm twin turbo set up to boost overall power. His intentions are to build one of the fastest 1/4 mile true 5-speed Mustangs in the area. This Mustang also has upgraded injectors, equal length headers with a fully stainless dual exhaust system, Edelbrock upper and lower intakes, 75mm throttle body, short throw shift kit and fully adjustable Edelbrock rear suspension. The 1991 Mustang GT is probably one of the most popular year and model Mustang and has always been a dream car for Mike. His uncle purchased a brand new Mustang off the showroom floor in 1993 and since then he has been hooked. That car now features a 331 stroker motor with a Vortech supercharger and boasts 640 horsepower with a 10.8 second run down a quarter-mile drag strip. Mike wants to build his Mustang GT to be faster than his uncle’s car and with a lot of time, money, heart and soul one day he will see his dream car become a reality. Let’s hope for his sake, that happens too.
