Isn’t it strange that in New England, where the Revolutionary War began, that in time gave birth to our great nation, racers are racing in sports where they don’t even know their own racing history? This is a cultural deficit caused by lack of education and that’s where museums and art serve the community best: by the preservation of one’s own heritage. Through script, drawings, paintings and photographs we preserve our historic past. Without a museum to house all the old artifacts and display them, what would we know today except through hearsay? Well for motorsports fans and racers, no more excuses, the North East Motorsports Museum is a reality and the doors are open. Come on in and learn about our past!
feet, a brand new all metal building constructed just for the museum, which opened its doors officially on June 9th, 2017. The building is all paid for, the exhibits too and so far, getting this project off the ground has gone better than anyone could have hopped for. In fact the first year has been so successful that they are already seeking further funding to add an additional 10,000 SQ feet to the existing facility. The board and curators who run the museum need more floor space to accommodate all the goodies that have been donated. Keep in mind this is a “Motor Sports” museum so this is not a building dedicated to any one motor sport. Racers who have been involved with Land Speed Record (LSR) racing, open wheel, speedway, dirt-track, hill-climb, drag racing, exhibition machines: you name it, they have it. Even Soap Box Derby cars hang from the walls of this museum. They even have a library devoted to New England Motor Sports.

Many drag racers I know, who’ve been around a while know that New England drag racing began for the most part in Sanford Maine thanks to the New England Hot Rod Council and bunch of car clubs like the Cam Snappers, the Orientals and their associates. Our grass roots in drag racing date back to the 1950’s and the state of Maine. But did you know that in the 1920’s the cars were racing in the sand on the shores of Old Orchard Beach Maine? There were men and women dressed in their Sunday best out on the Board-
racing to the delight of the on lookers during the 1920 era. I’ll go you one better, did you know there were drag races in Rhode Island on a regular basis? And they were covered and written about in National Dragster in 1961! That’s right, from 1960 to 1963, for four years there were almost monthly drag races at the Naval Air Station back when the place was not too busy and they didn’t mind renting out the air strip for a few hours. The local car clubs and hot rodders got together and made a

What is it about Classic Cars & Trucks from state-to-state that makes everyone look at this car culture hobby and lifestyle so differently?
I know the obvious reasons apply; such as duration of outdoor venues that involve these automobiles from state-to-state and region-to-region according to geographic locations and weather patterns like we have here in New England - Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. 4 seasons is far less appropriate for outdoor automotive events but is that any reason to keep hearing songs about California and let’s say, not Rhode Island? When it’s not raining throughout our entire spring season, or snowing five months out of twelve months, is that any reason that we can’t give some love to this region too? We all love Car Shows and Cruise Nights here in this region as much as the next automotive enthusiast. We listen to oldies and classic rock songs all the time at classic auto venues and a lot of them are about California and their car scenes. Why can’t we start a music revolution here in New England and find a songwriter that can write songs about New England Car Culture and Lifestyle 14| Motorhead Magazine - June 2018

too? California doesn’t lay claim to everything automotive does it? “Go West Young Man?” Really? What about, “Go East Young Man?” As far as this automotive enthusiast is concerned, we have as much right to boast about our classic automotive culture, hobby and lifestyle here in this region too. Seems like most of the automotive publications are distributed nationwide out of
California to millions of readers every month, every other month, or quarterly and sometimes seasonally, depending on the publishers. This automotive magazine and similar publications across New England should get as much attention with a larger readership as much as the bigger players get. Our content is just as informative and now creative content is becoming a very popular format with automotive fans nationwide. Tech is great, but entertaining content and visual graphics are building a strong following in related publications as well. Even Kids Content is receiving great results. We should be promoting more Kids Content. If we don’t, this classic auto culture, hobby and lifestyle will go “bye-bye!” in the not-sodistant future. Let’s give Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine a shout out too this summer! California may be a dream state for automotive enthusiasts but we can still be singing, “Rhode Island Dreamin’” if we want to!

Wiring, mocking up, fabricating.... these endeavors take time. Just ask the man I affectionately refer to as “The Prince of Darkness”, George

I’ve had Prince George install amps, sound systems, lightning traps and ejection seats in several dimensionally challenged Lamborghini and Ferrari with aerospace quality, fit and reliability. We all know one missed connection here could result is a seven figure trip to the dealer. Prince George’s talent and focus always shine, especially when the stakes are high, he enjoys a challenge! Unlike a Lamborghini a boat has tons of space but the dampenvironment and shock/vibration add another twist. We use aerospace connectors where feasible and everything else is double sealed to resist salt water intrusion. Our ECU’s are mounted high and dry in the battery bay and shielded to resist any salt spray that can get splashed around in rough or storm conditions. Somehow after a really wild ride salt water ends up everywhere, even in the cockpit! It’s so bad sometimes that this season we’re replacing our Race Communications with two cans and a string. They tell me Progresso soup cans are best. Is this true? We’ll be testing cans next week. Our big project for this month are the addition of Rocket Launcher exhaust systems. Our old tailpipes exited at the transom, our new ones come off the turbos and up through the engine hatches. Even though they are still water jacketed this mod saves some weight and the shorter pipes are less prone to cracking from vibration. The water jacketed wastegate tubes are now also dumping

Etch glances into his rear view mirror and sees flashing red and blue overhead lights closing in fast. He doesn’t want to risk crashing his beloved GTO so he in no way has the gas pedal near the floor mat under his feet. The police cars are now advancing and his GTO is not pulling away from either one of these police officers. Etch finally sees the highway on ramp sign and knows he is less than a half a mile from entering onto the freeway. The police cars are on his rear bumper as Etch tries to avoid being pitted and lose control of his muscle car. He accelerates a little more by pressing on the gas pedal with a slight push from his black work boots. A moment later, he sees exactly what he is looking for; the freeway. The oil slick black GTO leans to the right and heads onto the on ramp with the two police cruisers in hot pursuit. Etch looks ahead of his point of entrance and watches for any highway traffic he may have to avoid as he enters the on ramp trying to escape the two pursuing police vehicles close behind his classic muscle car. He sees a couple of big rigs and some approaching traffic but can’t slow down now. He needs
to do some shifty driving in order to avoid any contact with those highway vehicles. Especially either one of those big rigs. That could spell disaster for himself and possibly some other innocent drivers who happen to be nearby when the Outlaw GTO merges onto the highway. Etch glances back into his side view and rear view mirrors and still sees those two police vehicles in hot pursuit. “They are not going to go away easy,” said, Etch under his breath. Etch mats the gas pedal and sees those two big rigs closing in on his merge point of access to the highway and cranks up his stereo. “If this is how this ends, I’m going out loud!” He cuts the steering wheel hard and leap frogs the GTO onto the highway nearly missing the two approaching big rigs. The jet black GTO launches down the highway while Etch fights to keep the power plant Pontiac in control. He sees both of the big rigs close behind his muscle car and shifts down one gear releasing his foot from the gas pedal and quickly turns the steering wheel hard to the left and instantly heads onto the center meridian between the southbound and northbound stretches of highway.

The GTO is digging up the green grass and throwing debris all over the area almost blinding Etch with so much grass, dirt and stones inside the driver and passenger compartment of the GTO. The two big rigs roar past him in the middle of the highway meridian and head at a high rate of speed away from his location. Etch sees 4 state police cruisers in high pursuit of the two big rigs and wonders what in the hell is happening to everybody lately. “Is everybody losing their minds?” Etch slowly exits the center meridian and drives back onto the highway headed in the other direction away from the rampaging big rigs and state troopers hoping to get back to a safe place and calm his nerves. His GTO crawls to the next exit and Etch cannot believe his eyes when he drives to the blind spot behind the exit ramp tree line.

‘72 Sun Coupe By JED GREEKE This month’s featured vehicle is a rare 1972 Buick Sun Coupe that we have helped to resurrect. I am proud to say this car is owned by my wife and I, and we truly love it. We found this car on Craigslist NH back in June of 2012, we owned a 72 Skylark Convertible that we had just sold and were looking for a replacement. We liked the sun roof option and had no idea what we were purchasing at the time, as far as the limited production of the Sun Coupe’s. The previous owner had purchased the car from North Carolina as a father and son project, the project had stalled and he was ready to sell. The Sun Coupe had limited production numbers, according to Hemmings Motor News, production numbers were never recorded for the one year model, with a canvas retracting roof. Hemming’s is quoted stating, “research among some well-versed Buick restorers and specialists has concluded that the Sun Coupe’s production numbers fell somewhere between 1,600 and 1,800 units.” Our Sun Coupe was in rough condition, needing extensive body work for rust repair and some new fresh Buick Saturn Yellow paint (think GSX)! The hood was replaced to repair a terrible hood scoop, the Chevy motor was removed and replaced with a Buick 350, and a new transmission. The brakes have been upgraded to disc, the exhaust replaced with 2 ½ pipe with Flowmaster mufflers, suspension upgrades were made, Buick 15” rims installed with new BF Goodrich rubber wrapping them. The list continues with new chrome bumpers, new grill, new lights, lenses and rubber surrounds. And let’s not forget a new custom made vinyl retractable top, completed by Two Girls Upholstery. Once again Paintworks Unlimited went above and beyond and completed an amazing transformation of this diamond in the rough! 20| Motorhead Magazine - June 2018

Meaning...old music playing, people walking around and generally just looking at cars. But I was recently introduced to a new wave of a car show. Meet the Broke All Day East Coast Car Show held at Thompson Speedway in Connecticut. From the moment I entered, it seemed so different yet had so much to offer. All of a sudden, the stuffiness and memories of all those old car shows
vanished and I was greeted by refreshing young car enthusiasts. Now hold on, you’re probably asking what’s the difference? Well this is the difference. Imagine walking in and having loud music thumping through car speakers. Imagine a car show where a stunt motorcycle show is going on while hordes of car enthusiasts watch in awe and cheer for the motorcyclists doing wheelies,

mind having one myself. They had full size cars drifting, tearing it up while showing their skills controlling the cars. You could see the tires sending plumes of smoke in the air. Now wait there’s still more. They had a contest to see how low cars could go under a pole. It was like the game of limbo but with a vehicle. Tons of people watching and having a blast as friends of the participants piled in and on the cars to get them as low as possible to make it under the bar. This was one of the most entertaining car shows I had been to in a long time. The owners that run the organization of the Broke East Coast are Chris Strickland and Dan Mack. They should both be
ST COAST CAR SHOW commended for bringing so many people together that share a passion for the sport. Now there were lots of import cars, domestic muscle and trucks; I even saw some motorcycles. What more can you ask for? This is what car shows should be. Somewhere for you to be able to let loose and enjoy seeing cool stuff and hanging out with friends. My hat goes off to the organizers of the event and I would definitely attend more. Maybe when you get
a chance, you will check out one of these shows and see how you like it. I guarantee, you will not be disappointed. Having fun? Well it was nice talking with you and hopefully we will chat again. 2018 CA CAT SHOW SEASON OPENS WELL

The Cats out West made their presence known for the start of the 2018 car show season. Georgina Garcia May Photography provides us with a look at these fine events. Mercury Stray Cats Central California successfully sponsored new Cougar classes at local car shows including the St Patrick’s Day Event Orcutt, CA and Warbirds in Paso Robles, CA. Before the club’s formation, one or two cats attended these shows, sadly often being placed under “other” free for all categories.

Seven Cougars set the year off right on March 17th in Orcutt. George Woehlke’s 1967 Cougar won first in class on March 17th. Chapter Director, Rob May, from Mercury Stray Cats Central CA, sponsored the class. Instead of the club’s name on the first place trophy, a miscommunication lead to George literally winning an award with Rob’s name on it. No comment on how fun Rob had driving his 1969 Cougar equipped with bias ply tires in the rain on the way to the show. His wife, Georgina, drove their 1997 Cat to show 30 years of Mercury Cougars! Nine Cougars put on a great show May 12th at Warbirds. Thanks to Jeremy Daniel, 1967 XR-7 GT, the popular Paso Robles Warbirds added a cat class.
Todd Gregory, 1969 XR-7 from Goleta, won the show’s first ever Cougar award. Along with Jeremy’s ’67, George’s 67, and Doug Pool’s ’67 (from Nipomo) all helped anchor the 1967 parking end cap. Joel Cehn with his 3rd gen (1971-1973) ’71 Convertible was the other cat helping marking the edge of our territory. Joel’s Cougar was parked next to previous Motorhead featured Tom Rauch with his 1956 Mercury. Dennis Gage from My Classic Car admired the cats as well. Cat Scratch Fever, hosted by the Southern California Cougar Club SCCC in
Fullerton on May 19th, was a fantastic all classic (1967-1973) Mercury Cougar show with 40+ Cougars participating and one Mercury Comet. George Woehlke’s 1967 Cougar won 1st in his class. Dennis Baltimore (Los Angeles) and Rob teamed up to offer a rare glimpse of two Mercury E-paint coded Light Aqua 1969 Cougars at the same event! The Mercury Cougar from the opening of the 1996 From Dusk till Dawn movie was on display thanks to its owner, Mark Matejka. Next stop for the Mercury Stray Cats Chapter Director and Club Photographer is Dublin, Ohio for the Arthritis Foundation Show (July 6 -7)!

By ED YESSAIAN Many of you have become familiar with my son Xander, who on occasion, has submitted a story or two to Motorhead magazine. At 17 months old, Xander is usually sound asleep by 7:30 (8:00 the latest) except on two major occasions. The first occasion was last year when Xander and I followed the entire Pittsburgh Penguins playoff series to watch them clinch back to back Stanley Cup Championships. I’m not sure how he did it but he amazingly stayed awake and enthusiastically watched every single game from start to finish. The only other time he has endured this kind of excitement was not for a Penguin but for a Goose, a Blue Goose that made history at South Georgia Motorsports Park, as Mark Dykeman piloted his 1972 Camaro, known as the Blue Goose to the semi-finals at Lights Out 9. Together my son and I watched every minute of the event, cheering on our neighbor and friend as he went round after round, breaking hearts and making history. Mark originally picked up the car a couple years ago, right before Lights Out 7 from Tommy Kirk of MacFab Beadlocks, who continues to sponsor the car and also creates the absolute masterpieces that are run on the cars of all the top tier racers. It was Mark’s first time at an event of
this caliper and he was blown away by the support from the crowd, the racers, and the vendors who were attending. After that event he started the never ending series of changes that made the car his own and has continued to do so ever since. Mark did say that the one thing that has always stayed constant was the friends he has made and the people who always step up to keep his racing operation on track, literally. And
at this level, it takes quite a bit of time, effort, and support to keep the dream alive, especially when dealing with the monstrous power-plant

that delivers the win lights to his lane.
Delivering over 2000hp, the heart of the Blue Goose comes from Peter Harrell of Harrell Engine and Dyno and is based on a Dart Iron Eagle 427 stuffed with a Callie’s crank, GRP rods, Ross pistons, Dart heads, and Jesel rockers. A Haltech 2500T coil on plug igni�on system fires it all off. Forced Induc�on comes courtesy of the new Vortech XB 105 V30 blower which can be seen peeking through the front bumper and grille. An Alston Geardrive C.D.S for the blower eliminates the possibility of belt slip and premature main bearing wear. Mark then went to M&M to address the need for a Transmission that could stand up to this power level. A Turboglide 2 speed 400 with an M&M bolt together converter fit the bill and PST linked a carbon fiber drivesha� from there to the Moser Fab9 rear
end. Inside the case are a Strange center sec�on, 3.90’s, and 40 spline gun-drilled Moser axles. Bringing the car to a halt when necessary is a set of TBM Brakes all around supplied by Eric Yost of Customs by Bigun.
Fine tuning was done by Tommy Kirk, a�er Dennis MacPherson at DMC Racing wired the whole car, adding a Spaghe� Menders kit and �dying up everything. Inside and out the Blue Goose is truly a show piece. 38| Motorhead Magazine - June 2018

On the outside Mark credits Kevin Wallauer from Unlimited Fiberglass products for hooking him up with the carbon fiber front clip and hood that really gives the car a sinister appearance. Combine that with the Mac Fab beadlock wheels, and the car is just breathtaking. But don’t worry, this car is not just all show, it will GO, with the best of them. To date, the Blue Goose’s best pass is a 4.47 @161mph in the 1/8 mile, in X275 trim. Mark’s son Jack held the record at New England Dragway for X275 with a 4.57 @ 160mph. Pu�ng together a car of this caliber and keeping it alive takes a huge commitment from family and friends, so Mark wanted to make sure that he gave credit where credit was due. His hear�elt thanks go out to his wife Alyson, his kids Jack, Ashlie, Brokke, and Maci, as well as some helping hands like Brian Bell, Derek Mota, Mike Gerry, Jay Spinella, Tom Spinella, and Victor Contreras of Haltech.

A common hydroscopic fluid that would cause quite a conundrum is brake fluid. When brake fluid absorbs moisture, the boiling point of the fluid becomes lower and will cause the fluid to compress less. Moisture within your braking system will give the fluid the ability to limit your braking power, and in turn rust out your brake lines and all necessary hardware and components. Being a New Englander during the winter months will accelerate your fluid’s water-sucking habits and this is why it is discourage to keep larger containers on your garage shelf. If possible, buy the smallest bottles at your local Auto Parts retailer. One other thing that most Motorheads will store in case of emergencies is fuel. Yes, it may be necessary to keep a gallon or two for that snow blower over these

This form of what’s called ET Bracket racing is something most anyone with a current valid driver’s license can do. The biggest element to winning in this form of racing is learning how to “cut a light.” Learning how to leave on the green light requires first learning how to “Stage” properly. When a car rolls up to the starting line, turning on the first staging light on the tree is number one, then waiting for your opponent to do the same is job one. As soon as both cars are in the “Pre-Stage” mode, then it’s up to one of the cars to move into the second beam and become fully “Staged.” This is where a lot of races are won or lost. Exactly how far a machine rolls forward and trips the second beam, must be done exactly the same, every time, in order for the racer’s reaction times to be consistent. The reaction time (RT) is how quickly a racer leaves the starting line after the last light goes dark and the green light comes on – then there is a measurement of how quickly the front tire breaks the starting light beam. If a tire breaks the beam before the light becomes green, that is a “Red Light” foul start and that means instant elimination. Any delay (reaction time) between the green light and the front tire breaking the beam is measured in four decimal places. A perfect RT is a 0.000 light. They are super hard to do, but they do happen and they frequently win races.
Drag sleds also will be seen at your local drag strip. NHRA safety rules will apply.
The reason they win races is any delay to a driver leaving the starting line is added to the elapsed time (ET) and this is cumulative. For example, if a racer has a 15 second car and has a .275 RT, then runs a 15 second et dead-on, that racer produced a 15.275 run time. Incidentally any racer with a .275 RT will hear about it from fellow racers as that’s a real Rip Van Winkle snooze of a reaction time! The racer with a .050 or better yet half-that, has a good chance of winning a drag race.
The key to learning how to cut a good light has everything with first learning how to stage properly, then use the .5 second delay between the descending lights on the tree to cut reaction times down to double digit times.
Street motorcycles are also welcome to try drag racing, but because they are so quick and fast, they sometimes require special safety needs like a leather jacket and boots. Read the rule book before going to the track.

CRUISIN’ SCENE 2018 JIM WEICHERDING Car Shows, Car Shows and more... you guessed it; Car Shows. It seems like these events are popping up everywhere across the area this Cruisin Season. More so, than ever before. Is this a bad thing, or a good thing? Depends on how you look at it. More Car Shows means more venues to help keep this American Car Culture and Hobby alive. It also means, the thinning of the herd. Now, we have so many Car Shows and Cruise Nights popping up all over the place and everybody wants to get a paycheck to be a part of this. You can’t go anywhere without paying a fee to participate with these types of venues. I’m all for raising money to help out charities and community causes. I attend more than 100 events during the summer for that reason. To help out charities and community causes. Pretty soon, Car Show and Cruise Night Hosts will be charging the DJ to hold events at their establishments instead of them being paid to be there during the season. Why? Because there are so many DJ’s, Classic Auto Clubs and Promoters holding these events. Don’t think it’s gonna happen? Think again. It will happen. Only a matter of time. Just like restaurants with sponsored placemats placed on their tables in front of their customers faces every day. Right now it’s provided to their eateries
for Free. Soon, a placemat provider will start offering restaurant owners “Carry Fees” and PAY THEM to carry their line of placemats. Same formula for Car Shows and Cruise Nights will play out in the future. Don’t see it coming? It’s coming! I can hear it now: “Hi, I’m a DJ that wants to hold a Cruise Night or Car Show at your establishment and instead of you paying me to be here, I will pay you to be my host location.” Once things begin to get out of control the climate changes and not always for the better. Most of the time, it’s for the worst. Remember when you had to pay a junkyard or scrapyard to come and remove your junk and broken down car or truck in your yard or driveway? Not anymore. Now, those same businesses have to PAY YOU! to come and pick up that rotted piece of metal cluttering up your property. Same exact thing is happening right now with Car Shows and Cruise Nights. One junkyard and scrapyard starts offering to PAY YOU! for your junk cars, then they ALL HAVE TO PAY YOU! for that clunker. All it takes is one person to start contacting any potential Car Show or Cruise Night host restaurant, or diner, or business and offers to PAY THEM! to host their events, then all bets are off that this money machine will change direction and it will wash over all of us like a tidal wave. It’s the money. It’s all about the money. Ten, or fifteen, even twenty years ago, you could go to any Classic Car and Truck Show or Cruise Night and it was completely free to showcase your ride and be a spectator. The much larger venues were paid vehicle entries and spectators had to pay a fee to enter the event grounds and that eventually rolled over into the much smaller venues that you see now.

I hope I’m wrong, but I’m no idiot and I have been around the block for more than twenty years attending Car Shows and Cruise Nights across New England. The trend doesn’t look good for any DJ, Classic Auto Club or Promoter right now. Eventually, money wins the game. It’s who can bring in the biggest crowd and who has the largest following today. The only foreseeable problem is that the once paid DJ, Classic Auto Club and Car Show / Cruise Night Promoter will be footing the bill and not receiving compensation. It won’t be enough to generate customers to their businesses anymore. They will want to be paid too! Too many upstarts out there wanting a piece of the Car Show and Cruise Night money pie. It will ultimately backfire and cost a lot more down the road than expected. Just because you can’t see it coming doesn’t mean it’s not headed your way. The sun is out one minute and it’s raining on your parade the next minute. Car Show or Cruise Night instead of parade definitely applies. Buckle Up! Changes are coming. On a day that started out bitter cold, there was some concern over the attendance of the 13th Annual ED DAY Charity Car Show at New England Dragway on Saturday April 21st. But all doubt was cast aside when eventually the sun came up and the participants rolled in (close to 50 cars). As always, the areas two largest Mustang Clubs showed a strong presence as The Mustangs of Massachusetts and NH Mustang Club both showed proudly what their members had to offer. Over two dozen trophies and specialty awards were presented and the following Muscle Car aficionados walked away with the highly coveted ED DAY AWARDS…

Meet New Bedford, Massachusetts legend Nitrous Dave and his protégé son Cody. This father-son team are tearing up the streets ,the dyno and the track with their home built Fox body Coupe Mustang. Nitrous Dave has tuned and built many Mustangs over the years but this particular Mustang was built with a little extra pride and love. The reason being, his son Cody was going to pilot this car and learn the ropes at the track, in the streets and while working at the shop. So if you want to know how to build a car that’s fast, get out your notepad and pen and take notes.
Not too shabby right?? Well my thoughts exactly! Now ask yourself, how fast will this car run once it is shifted at its 7500 RPMs??? Well Nitrous Dave knows exactly what he’s doing and knows for a fact how fast the car will run with Cody driving. But if you want to find out, maybe you could line up against it at the track. Or maybe not…your call.
When it came to making power, Dave decided to use a trusted Ford R block punched out to a revving 327 cubic inches with billet internals.

Rhode Island is the smallest state in the country and you probably don’t know this fact but there are more pick up trucks registered in the state of Rhode Island than any other state per capita. That means there are a lot of pick up truck owners in the state of Rhode Island. In fact, I’m one of them myself. I have always owned a pick up
My classmates thought I was a redneck because I drove an apple picking truck and flatbed truck at the ripe old age of fourteen. When I was able to drive and own my own vehicle, I purchased a 1969 SS Camaro with a big block and a 4-Speed and shortly after that I purchased a big 4-wheel drive pick up truck with big oversized tires and a lift-kit back in the days when this was rare to see cruising around the roadways of Rhode Island. Not a lot of truck owners were lifting their pick up trucks above factory specs.
I did. That was just the way I was and still am when it comes to trucks. My son was very young when I purchased yet another of my long list of pick up trucks and he loved that Dad had a big truck painted bright Corvette red unlike any other truck in the area at that time. I guess being a redneck is just in the blood or just a state of mind for some of us. Worn out jeans, work boots and vehicle graphic tee shirts are our normal daily wardrobe and we have grown accustomed to this laid back approach to life in general.

GPS units are essential equipment on todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boats. Units range from inexpensive handhelds to full blown chart plotters. Many GPS units have built in mapping or accept digital maps to help the user navigate. Boaters can choose from a simple handheld unit or choose a fixed mount unit. Both types have advantages and disadvantages. Many boaters keep a hand held unit for safety even if they also use a fixed unit. One nice feature for many handhelds is a special cradle with a power cable for use when under way.

Configuring your GPS is important in order to navigate accurately. Among the parameters to be chosen are map datum, navigational units, data output and the unitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s course format. Each of these elements should be understood and set before using the unit to navigate.
Navigational units can usually be set to miles per hour, or knots. Since water is measured in nautical miles, it is preferred to set GPS units of measure to nautical miles and knots. It is also relevant to remember that your paper chart typically displays units in nautical miles. A degree of latitude is 60 nautical miles, and a minute of latitude is 1 nautical mile. Knots are important as 1 knot = 1 nautical mile. Another setting to choose is course up or North up. This will make the plotter display the chart or grid always with the course oriented in front or always in a North up orientation.
Map datum refers to the original process that the paper chart was designed with. In order to compare a GPS position to a paper chart, both the GPS unit and the chart must use the same datum. WGS84 is the most common datum in use among American boaters. NAD83, the other common datum is virtually the same. International charts use a variety of datums so mariners are advised to
GPS units can store the near exact location of a given point of reference. Modern GPS units often come with a wide range of waypoints pre-programmed. In addition, the user can also store, name and recall custom waypoints. This allows boaters and fishermen to store and maintain lists of fishing hotspots, navigational marks and other important locations. GPS units also store routes
and plotting history so the mariner can call up a pre-programmed path to follow or review a vesselâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s earlier path. Waypoints, routes and track data can all be downloaded, stored, edited and uploaded back to the GPS via the users computer or other device. This can be a vital feature that allows the user to save important data. Data from one GPS can also be shared or cloned to another unit. All these features allow users to easily manage a vast amount of information effectively. GPS units can be a great navigational tool when used properly, although GPS units should never be relied on as a primary means of navigation. A fundamental understanding of basic navigation is vital to successful operation of these indispensable tools.

This is one real nice 1927 Ford Model T Roadster. Roger Rondeau from Burrillville, Rhode Island, is the proud owner of this month’s READERS RIDES Feature Article Vehicle. What once was a Ford factory built vehicle and then transformed into a California Drag Car and back to a street driven hot rod sure catches a lot of eyes while cruisin’ the roads of Rhode Island. Back in the 70’s this beast drag raced across the state of California and did so at one drag strip after another before it found its way to the state of Florida - and then finding its way to the state of Rhode Island where it is today. This cool 1927 Roadster features a ‘68 Chevy 327 engine bored out to 333 cubic inches. Horsepower range is 425-475 with a camshaft lift at 535 and solid lifters. A Weiand 2x4 high rise tunnel ram intake manifold with 2 Holley 450 cfm carbs. Sportsman heads with roller rockers. Also features

A custom built 350 Turbo transmission gets the job done behind the engine while the 1957 Pontiac rear end with 456 gears, posi-track, a 9.3” ring gear and narrowed to 45” helps this ride pack a punch! This straight axle pavement pounder also has coil over shocks, Watts Link rear suspension, 2x3” tig welded box frame, 100” wheelbase and a 1/4” aluminum firewall. Steel motor mounts keep the engine safely secured to the frame. A fill up at the local gas station isn’t a lot of money with only a 12 gallon fuel cell but you don’t get very far between those fill ups with this beast. A Holley electric fuel pump keeps the engine running between those gas station fill ups but it’s well worth it. An NHRA Drag Racing kill switch was installed and is still functional today even though it is now a street driven ride and not a drag car. The lift off fiberglass body is no longer removable due to its transformation from a drag car to a street driver. The front tires are 23x5-15” with American Racing 11” rims. The rear tires are 31x16.5-15” Mickey Thompson Pro Sportsman with 12” rims. This beast is badass!
