By SERAFINO “JIMMY” CAZZANI My dear friend Lou Cicerone said “Jimmy, wouldn’t it be great publishing the only automotive magazine featuring performance boats as well as cars?” My response, “Louie, I’d be humbled to see my race boat included with the interesting and unique vehicles you always feature.” And he gave me the opportunity... A LITTLE BACKGROUND I’m Serafino “Jimmy” Cazzani. Team principal and throttleman of the Scuderia Cazzani Offshore Racing Team. A Motor Head and Offshore Powerboat Racer. A former Offshore Racing Multiple Champion and speed record holder. A lover of Muscle Cars, Rods and basically any automotive art my fellow Motor Heads envision and build. I presently campaign a Superboat Unlimited/ Extreme Class 42 Foot Platinum catamaran sporting local jewelry giant, ALEX AND ANI livery. I compete against the largest and fastest offshore racing boats in the world! We’re commonly referred to as “The Top Guns” and “The Big Boys!” With ALEX AND ANI founder and CEO’s personal and corporate support I’m poised to get back to my winning ways and fully expect to win, win, win in 2017! These new style catamarans are vastly different aerodynamically than the “Cats” I enjoyed many victories with “Back In The Day” This new breed of Cat is literally a wing. You don’t drive it, you fly it! That’s why we’re commonly referred to as pilots. The hull is 42 feet long and almost 12 feet wide. The tunnel/wing section is about 36 feet long and almost 6 feet wide. This section, called the chord generates lift as velocity increases. Ideally the 6| Motorhead Magazine - March 2017

Junior Dragster Icon Cam Murray Graduates to PRO Eliminator

By XANDER ANTHONY Last month in Motorhead, I made my debut as the newest MOPAR loving writer to join the staff. At two and a half months old now, I’ve already heard of quite a few interesting people within the automotive world. One name that seemed to surface quite frequently in conversations regarding the “racing family” is Xander Anthony Yessaian Cam Murray. Cam was a Junior Dragster Superstar who made a smooth transition into the world of full size vehicle competition. I asked my Dad, Motorhead writer Ed Yessaian how he met Cam Murray and his response was somewhat comical; “Cam Murray treed me with a .001 light and went on to win Street Eliminator in his Mother’s Hyundai SUV”. Apparently after that particular run my Dad congratulated him on his victory and they became good friends ever since. I have been told that when I’m five years old Cam Murray and his brother Kyle will be assisting me in my Junior Dragster career. But for now, let’s talk about Cam and his newest secret weapon, the Killer Volare. While Cam enjoyed tremendous success with his Mother’s Hyundai, it became time for him to get something of his own, something a bit more competition worthy. Eventually a 1980 Plymouth Volare turned up and it was a good base for Cam to start with. He used the car for some summer cruising but he couldn’t resist a trip to New 10| Motorhead Magazine - March 2017

England Dragway and made his first passes with the Volare in the Summer of 2015, netting a best of 18.87 in the quarter mile, with the stock 225 block and a one barrel carburetor. By the end of the season, Cam had perfected his driving techniques to the point where he not only won the final points race of the season but that victory jumped him from 10th to 4th in one race day and secured his position as “Rookie of the Year” in Street Eliminator. For the 2016 season Cam made just a couple minor changes to the car which included 3.91 gears and Mickey Thompson tires at all four corners. Under the hood a Clifford intake manifold

A set of headers and a 3200 converter completed the transformation that took the car almost two seconds faster than last season to mid-16 second passes. With just that handful of improvements he went to the finals in back to back weeks of Street Eliminator and later in the season not only won Street Eliminator but went to the Finals in Pro Eliminator on the very same day. By the end of 2016 he was ranked 4th in Street and 12th in Pro, which was phenomenal considering he missed the first three races. Truly the Tom Brady of racing right there folks!!

The OUTLAW GTO is tearing up the black top at a high rate of speed with nothing but open road ahead of it and the driver. Etch checks his rear view mirror and only sees darkness behind him. Not a headlight or overhead flashing lights anywhere. That doesn’t mean he is out of their reach. The police officers have radios and other police departments located in the towns and cities up and down this interstate highway. Etch is about to find that out. The powerplant GTO starts to fishtail from one side of the highway’s four lanes when Etch double stomps the brake pedal with both feet hard. The GTO comes to an abrupt stop sidways in the middle of the highway with Etch staring at a dozen, or more, State Police vehicles stopped about a half mile in front of him and his now stopped classic muscle car. A moment later, bright lights from the police vehicles engulf the jet black Pontiac and light up the

darkened stretch of roadway. Etch covers his eyes and tries to see what is happening in front of him. He sees shadows of a half a dozen figures slowly walking towards his driver side door. Etch has only two options: Stay put and deal with the consequenses of his rebel actions, or attempt to flee, knowing damn well that the police cruisers that were a few miles behind him will be closing in on him very soon. He removes his feet from the brake pedal and mats the gas pedal. Shots ring out in the night air as bullets go speeding past his drivers side window nearly hitting him in his head. “Damn! All of this because I want to drive my car?” Etch is furious when he cuts his steering wheel hard and the OUTLAW GTO wheel hops like a jack hammer and takes flight. The left front tire is the first part of the vehicle to lift off the ground. The nose lifts high off the blacktop. Both front wheels are up in the air now. The back tires are screaming

and sending a cloud of smoke in its wake. The exhaust is so loud the gunfire is completely muﬄed to minimal puffs of air noises. The bullets soar past the GTO as it slams hard back down onto the highway surface. The Pontiac launches away from the group of State Police as they all scramble to get back into their police vehicles to give chase. Etch sees the other group of pursuing police cruisers approaching quickly down the highway, coming directly towards him, as he heads straight for them driving in the opposite direction on the wrong side of the highway. “So, they wanna play chicken and sees who swerves first? It’s not going to be me!”

Take a Kid to a Car Show JIM WEICHERDING It’s that time of year again. Birds are chirping, tires are chirping, and the 2017 Car Show Season is upon us. I’m sure by now, that we have all had our share of the “winter blues” and what a lot of us like to call “cabin fever” during the long winter months, but that’s all about to change. For some of us, we are excited about the warmer weather and longer sunny days, but for the most of us it’s about that and taking our classic cars and trucks out of hiding and hitting the black top searching for the nearest car show, or cruise night, in the New England area. This will be this writer’s twentieth year of non-stop classic car and truck shows and cruise nights in this region. I love them! I can’t attend enough of them! I’m sure a lot you reading my article right now feel exactly the same way. Now, imagine this: No more Car Shows and Cruise Nights. None. Obsolete. Non-existing. It’s not far fetched and hard to imagine when you think about it. We automotive enthusiasts are getting older and a lot of us are not attending these venues anymore like we used too. The older enthusiasts are getting too old and can’t attend due to illness, financial strains, personal hardships and deaths. Year, after year, we lose a lot of our car show enthusiasts to numerous reasons. That will not change. The trend is very obvious to many of us. What can be done to help change this trend and help our Classic Car & Truck American Culture grow and thrive for years to come? “Take a Kid to a Car Show!” Yup. That’s what needs to happen if we are to stop this current trend. Our American Classic Car & Truck Culture and Hobby is going to be completely gone in another fifty to seventy-five years if we do not help change this trend. Our lifestyle will end with the baby boomer generation. Well, this writer and 18| Motorhead Magazine - March 2017

automotive enthusiast doesn’t want to see that happen and neither do a lot of other automotive enthusiasts. SEMA doesn’t want to see this happen. How do I know? Because they sent me a case of their “Take a Kid to a Car Show!” Stickers to pass out at the events I attend all season long. They found out through social networking about all of my Car Show & Cruise Nights Events I will be attending this year when I bring my Giant Buckleupallofus Child Passenger Safety Balloon Attraction to help bring in the kids to these venues. I already have more than 100 of these events on my 2017 schedule

By LAURYN “HOTWHEELS” VERNANCIO This is probably one of the most contradic�ng ar�cles that I’ve ever written but I felt it was a topic that is rarely ever touched upon and something that I deﬁnitely felt passionate enough to write about. It’s been the great “debate” as of late where gender roles are shared and determined based upon the newest century and the dis�nct mindset is that men and women can be on the same level. While this may look ul�mately like the case, there are s�ll some factors that are not brought forth in today’s work descrip�ons. With the presiden�al elec�on’s consequences of chronic protests regarding gender rights and beneﬁts, I do feel that we as women are empowered in the selec�on of our own choices. However, being compe��ve in an industry such as Automo�ve technology is quite the challenge. 22| Motorhead Magazine - March 2017

First you might seem quite off guard by my last statement, but then there are some basic points that might make you think twice. When a decision is made to enter into a world that is dominant of men, one might feel quite in�midated upon the first leap. You might be worried about making a fool of yourself, or in the end not succeeding at all. Will you even be hired a�er proper educa�on? How much am I going to have to prove myself to outbid the compe��on? Simple tasks such as oil changes or blas�ng off �res may already be your backer upon previous experiences but it is going to take much more knowledge to get what you even think you might deserve. It’s like being caught up in a race of uncertainty based upon a coin flip. Upon cer�fica�on and costly ASE tests to even show your worth, now it’s your job to go find the “ideal” job. While some shops and dealers

Some�mes even working behind a parts counter might also be frustra�ng as clients might ask for a “second opinion” and ask for a male counterpart who will give them the same exact answer.

are stuck in the old �mes of a woman being in the kitchen and might turn you down, others may think of you as a distrac�on to the fellow technicians or that you won’t even have the strength and endurance to get through an engine swap (yes, it is hard work!). Meanwhile, you are out just looking to make a living and pay your bills plus maybe build the few toys that you have, which means wrenching throughout the day just to have the ability to wrench on your own performance machine at home if given the chance. Even at �mes upon ﬁnding something that will work for you, it can be a catch twenty two. I myself have graced the presence of a few repair facili�es (I won’t say any names, but most are out of business since these encounters) that have haggled with my pay or have made inappropriate advances which ul�mately makes you feel uncomfortable to even come into work.

All in all, I’m not trying to sound too dicey. I’m merely here to thank the dozens of automo�ve repair shops, dealers, and retail stores that have given women a fair chance in the workplace. I think it’s pre�y important to work as a team not based upon gender, orienta�ons, religions, etc. Throughout my career I have experienced many ups and downs trying to figure out what would work best and digging my hands into anything I could to learn a new skill set. I am proud to have a posi�ve experience with all of our connec�ons within Motorhead Magazine as you all have made a difference not just with the general customer base, but also with our readers. If you think it’s easy, then think again. I remember a �me like every one of you where I picked up my first Hotwheels car or held my first wrench with the biggest form of anxiety. We are proud to hold the �tle of a great publica�on that started out so small seven years ago and grew to become something that we could only ever dream of. DRAG RACING FULL CIRCLE TOM McCARTHY Drag racing is indeed a sport, but it’s not always about going in a straight line in order to win. Sometimes in drag racing it’s necessary to go full circle in order to get the win. It’s to be expected that readers will look at this headline and wonder “what?” But it’s true, in drag racing, traditionally a 1320’, straight line sport, sometimes you need to get back to your beginnings in order to come full circle and become complete. Case in point, the association of Al Hanna’s jet car operation known as Hanna Motorsports and his first jet car pilot Don Roberts. Their initial association and collaboration from 1981/82 became the end of one career yet the beginning of another.

With the afterburner lit, Don Roberts completes an important chapter in his life: driving the Jet Funny car of Al Hanna, entertaining the fans of New England Dragway, as they set out to do, in 1982. Tom McCarthy Photo.

And after 34 years it came full circle for all concerned on August 6th, 2016. This tale actually begins a long time ago and is part of the lore of New England drag racing. Al Hanna, as a drag racer, has worn many hats and just as many Simpson racing helmets, during his 50 years of drag racing. Al’s built many cars from dragsters to AA/FC, to jet dragsters to jet engine powered Funny Cars. Al’s been there, done that and he now sells the T-shirts. He’s earned that and more in five decades of drag racing. But like all drag racers, this is not something someone does alone. It takes a great team to be successful in drag racing and when Al Hanna’s famous “Eastern Raider” Funny Car team transitioned from nitro Funny Cars to a Jet Car operation beginning during the 1981/82, time frame, Al called upon his friend Don Roberts to help get the new venture started. Don Roberts, a great drag racer in his own right, by 1980, Don had already driven just about every configuration you can name for 1960-1970’s era drag cars and won races in all of them. He had a bad crash in 1975 and lost his lower right leg below the knee, but he stayed on in the sport. He’s a man’s man, who hangs tough.

During Don’s convalescing from the accident, he was hired by Jack Doyle in 1976 to be part of the management team at New England Rich Hanna and Don Roberts team up to bring an important chapter in a Dragway. A few years later, man’s life to a proper close. strip administration, Al Hanna, a good friend of Don’s from their Nitro Funny Car racing days contacted Don one day and said essentially, “Don how do you feel about driving a car again – perhaps a jet Funny Car?” Don replied, “We need to talk.” Thus began the negotiations between Al Hanna and Don Roberts to bring Don into Hanna Motorsports and help create and drive their first Jet powered exhibition Funny Car. That was the plan anyway, but this is drag racing and in drag racing, well, things happen. To make a very long story a bit shorter, their plans in 1981 to build a jet car from scratch with the help and advice from a premier jet car team of the day – well that just didn’t work out. In fact the whole fiasco that unfolded over a span of many months left Al and Don shaking their heads with empty pockets. Money and patience only go so far my friends. The bottom line was, Don was out of money, had no income coming in, the jet car booked dates were not happening in 1982 and all the money was going out with none coming in and that kind of a situation just can’t go on for long. So something had to give and it was Don, he had to give notice: “Al I’m sorry, this is it, I have to get a real job and start bringing in real money.” Don did so with great reluctance and he went on to take a job with Metric Screw and Tool in Wakefield, Mass. Meanwhile, Al Hanna continued on with the Eastern Raider Jet F/C program and the rest as they say, is history. Well almost anyway, except for the unfinished business of Don Roberts getting to drive Al Hanna’s jet car. Funny how life can bring things around if you stay with it long enough. Over the years that ensued, Don, while not driving and no longer in competition in the sport, never left the sport, really. He remained an active, contributing, behind the scenes member of New

England drag racing and the Al Hanna - Don Roberts families have remained life-long friends as the years ticked past them. Then in 2016, Al’s son Rich Hanna had an idea, “Hey dad, what if we put Don in the car, just one more time? What if we all finished what we started back in 1981/82?” Al gave the thumbs up to this with a smile. So with a bunch of behind the scenes phone calls between Hanna Motorsports, Don Roberts and the New England Dragway management, it was decided Don would sit in as a “Special Guest Driver” at New England Dragway’s premier show, their annual Jet Cars Under The Stars show on Saturday, August 6, 2016. Don would suit-up, drive the Jet car doing burner pops and a smoke show, then stage and on command, power down. This was necessary as Don did not have a current valid NHRA Jet Car Exhibition license and his driving forward of the starting line would have violated one too many NHRA rules! Yet by piloting the car in the exhibition phase, with Don Roberts driving Al Hanna’s jet car, the circle would be complete. Once upon a time they set out to entertain drag racing fans with a jet car together and they did exactly that, bringing the whole scenario full circle. As the Jet Cars UnderThe Stars show unfolded that day, Don Roberts strapped into the cockpit of the car and with his race face on, and he was once again was “The Man in the Arena.” At exactly 2:53 PM, the Hanna Motorsports team fired up their jet car with Don Roberts behind the wheel with his beautiful wife Margie on the side lines with camera in hand, just a bit nervous (10x), with her husband of 31 years, behind the wheel of a 4000HP jet car that can generate 6000 Lbs of thrust on command. Wondrous innovations in car design abound and excite consumers every day, from the novelty of a seat warmer to the practicality of parking sensors. These sensors detect an imminent collision and inform the driver either audibly, visually or both. As simple as parking sensors seem, the particulars of their operation remain fascinating.

INSTALLATION • Ultrasonic parking sensors involve more work and potential damage to a vehicle to install. You must drill holes and leave lasting damage in your vehicle’s bumpers to place the sensors properly. An electromagnetic sensor usually attaches an antenna with an adhesive, resulting in no damage to the vehicle’s frame, and it disappears from view when installed properly. Some models offer the capability to switch the sensors on and off at will, which can prove useful in slow-moving traffic.

ULTRASONIC • In an ultrasonic parking sensor, a mechanic installs sensors on the front and rear bumpers that emit ultrasonic radio waves. These waves strike objects within the detection range and bounce back, where the sensor measures their travel time. Using this travel time, the sensor will determine whether an object might collide with the vehicle and, if so, activates the warning system. Powerful and difficult to disrupt, ultrasonic waves naturally lend themselves for parking sensors. However, since it uses sound waves, an ultrasonic parking sensor may not detect some small or oddly shaped items that do not easily reflect sound. ELECTROMAGNETIC • Some models use electromagnetic readings to monitor the area near a vehicle’s bumpers. Some advertised electromagnetic parking sensors will provide various levels of alarm tones to alert the driver of an approxi-

impending danger. An alert box rests within the body of the car, whether factory installed or aftermarket. An ultrasonic parking sensor will signal the alert box wirelessly, while the electromagnetic sensor can be either wired or wireless. Once the alarm sensor inside the box receives the signal, it will notify the driver with an alarm tone, warning light or both.
