54% of American males do not know how to check their engine oil and even more than that do not know how to change a tire properly.

TECH TALK will feature automotive upgrades, simple preventative maintenance, customizing, specialties and general repairs each and every month that should directly impact your driving life on many levels. This feature article every month is very important to the longevity of your vehicle life and your overall safety behind the wheel. You put your family and friends in your vehicles and this is not something you should take lightly. This is serious business and I will make sure that you are given the information that you need to stay safe and keep your vehicle up and running for a long time to come.

Scary to think that this is a true percentage number of guys out there that do not know simple and basic mechanics on their own vehicles.

JIM WEICHERDING You are driving down the road early in the morning on your way to work and suddenly you see your vehicle (Check Engine) warning lights up; What do you do? Do you keep driving, or do you pull over and take a look under the hood to see if you still have an engine?

You are driving your classic car, or truck, to a cruise event, or car and truck show and your brakes start to squeal and pulsate. You just bought a classic vehicle for the first time and you bring it to an area automotive shop to have it gone through from top to bottom before taking out for a long distance cruise to the scenic seaside communities New England has to offer. You have four drum brakes on your classic ride: Do you know what to do when your ride to do about this safety problem and this new TECH TALK feature in MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE will be addressing problems like this amongst many other automotive problems, needed repairs and services.

May sound funny, but you have no idea how many people may actually do this. Ever hear of anyone read; (Add Engine Oil) on their dashboard and then stop to purchase oil, open the hood and then pour the open container all over the top of the engine? Well, I have. I have even seen it on YouTube caught on camera.

doesn’t stop on a dime and give you back change in the process? I do, but I know a lot about classic cars and trucks. You may not know what

A lot of your automotive questions will be answered every month and it will benefit you and your ride immensely by taking some of this automotive advice for what it is worth. A vehicle is the second largest expense we deal with other than a mortgage, or paying rent to have a roof over our heads every night when our heads hit our pillows.

Our first TECH TALK Feature will appear in the June Issue of MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE and we will address upgrading your classic ride from the factory drum brakes to aftermarket disc brake applications. Replacing a single reservoir master cylinder with a double reservoir master cylinder and new brake lines to make sure that your ride stops on a dime and gives you back change in the process. Drum brakes are not the safest bet on the roadways today and new disc brakes are the only way to travel and stop when you need to stop. Hopefully, one of the upcoming TECH TALK Feature articles is something that helps you and your ride stay on the road for years to come and do it safely. Buckle Up! and Drive Safely this cruisin’ season.

READERS RIDES Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer’s 1969 Ford Torino GT Fastback Written by “ETCH” In 1997, Cruisin’ Bruce Palmer was “on the hunt” for another Ford Torino. The white 1976 coupe, ( visualize “Starsky & Hutch” ) that he previously owned for nearly 15 years was wearing out fast as it approached 300,000 miles. Not wanting to be without a Torino, Cruisin’ Bruce launched a search and eventually found a classic car enthusiast located in southern Torino in California desert California who bought and sold 1960’s and borhood scrap yard and set out to tryand arrange 1970’s Fords. At the time, he was hunting for a a deal. But, after several weeks of discussions 1972 Torino because he had always been fond of back and forth, it was determined he wouldn’t be the “bass able to secure it. California laws were changing mouth rapidly and it was no longer legal to buy a comgrille” plete car out of a salvage yard. style classic During what Cruisin’ Bruce expected to be a final Ford. He phone conversation, the classic car enthusiast knew of a mentioned that he had a 1969 Torino GT Fastback complete on his property that ran and needed restoration. and easily A few fuzzy black and white fax machine photos restorlater, and he was hooked. Two weeks after that able 1972 phone conversation, Cruisin’ Bruce was flying Torino west on a one-way ticket planning on driving the Sport in Torino GT Fastback home. And that’s just what he his neigh- attempted to do. The classic Ford only showed Bruce at Sinclair

66,000 original miles on the odometer, but it was well-worn. While there was no rust on the vehicle, the southwest sun had baked much of the paint off the body and dried out the upholstery. The 302 engine. was smoking, the transmission leaked, the worn suspension placed the rear bumper just inches off the ground and the interior looked like the aftermath of a state fair. It still ran, so he pointed it east onto Route 66 and headed towards New England. The scenery he viewed and the history behind the famous Route 66 highway was fabulous, but the Torino was not enthusiastic about making the long trip home. On day one, it burned half a quart of oil, day twoit used a full quart, and by day four, while driving into the plains states, Bruce at the Wigwam the classic car was consuming two quarts of oil before lunchtime. He was forced to keep a case of 20/50w oil in the trunk for those constant top offs. Later that day, just outside Springfield, Ill, it sucked the head gasket and then the number seven rod was sticking out of the oil pan.

Cruisin’ Bruce had no choice but to rent a Ford Taurus at the Springfield airport. He then drove back home to New England and had his recently purchased classic car shipped to his home a couple weeks later. A few months later, he launched what would become a year-long restoration project including full bodywork and re-paint, complete interior overhaul and installation of a rebuilt 351 4-bbl swapped out of a 1970 Cougar eliminator.

WE HAVE MOVED

The grand unveiling came late in the summer of 1998 and it’s been a joy to drive ever since. Now, Cruisin’ Bruce brings his pride and joy with him to several of the weeknight cruises that he emcee’s, along with the occasional weekend show. Whether, or not, he can bring this vehicle depends largely on how much equipment he needs for particular events. While he does love the fastback Route 66 in Painted Desert styling, it’s certainly not as cavernous as his “fleet” of old station wagons. Today, the 1969 Torino GT sports a little over 150,000 miles and still runs like a champ. It lives comfortably in a heated garage and is pampered with all the attention it deserves. He decided to keep the body paint white, but opted to switch the stripe and interior color scheme from black to blue. The bench seat was removed and replaced with bucket seats and a console, although the column shifter remains, despite repeated attempts to remove it from the vehicle. Because it is a California classic car, it features an air-conditioning unit, even though most of the components were missing at purchase. He said that he has never been interested in adding the extra weight and added strain on the engine that re-installing the other components would bring overall to the vehicle. For his own enjoyment, he installed and by-passed the factory Philco AM with a CD player. Other than that upgrade, the 1969 Torino GT Fastback has remained largely stock. Cruisin’ Bruce’s ride has been featured in the newspaper, on calendars, in magazines, on TV and more, but there’s nowhere it looks better than in his own driveway, idling and ready to cruise.

Nick Cincotti proves that working hard pays off ED YESSAIAN It’s funny how every single year that I attend the World of Wheels show, I run into someone I haven’t seen in years. This year, I ran into Nick Cincotti, who really reminded me of a great period of my childhood, when I hung out with his younger brother Mike, working at a local supermarket in Burlington Ma. Mike had a pretty sweet Jeep back then, but occasionally would show up in a brand new, bright red, Thunderbird Super Coupe. This was a car that belonged to his older brother Nick, who at the time was just getting started in his own tile business. Fast Forward 20+ years to the year 2015 and Mike’s big brother still has the coolest cars on the playground. Wandering around World of Wheels it was Nick’s Ford F100 pickup that first caught my eye. It featured a top notch restoration job and was lettered with his company logo on the doors, which was what originally drew me into his display. As I walked by the truck to see if Nick was around, there before me was another of his collection, an amazing, bright orange first generation Camaro. The actual hue of Nick’s Camaro is “O-So-Orange”, a custom

color formulated by PPG, with tasteful striping and lettering that reads “SS 427” accenting the car in all the right places thanks to Nitche Signs and Graphics. Obviously, the car has hiding a pretty solid powerplant, namely a GM ZZ427 with aluminum heads and a Holley 770cfm carb on top. Backing that up was a Muncie M21 transmission, assisted by a RAM clutch. A GM 12 bolt with 3.73 gears finished off the drivetrain, spinning the custom Rush Forth wheels that measure 18x7 up front and 18x10 out back, with monstrous 315/30/18 tires giving the car an amazing stance and incredible look from behind. Suspension and brakes on the car are all top of the line, with nothing left untouched. All four wheels feature an upgraded GM disc brake setup, with Detroit Speed Engineering rear suspension and tubular front suspension. Koni shocks damper all four corners and Hotchkis drop springs round out the package. The Camaro and the F100 pickup are just a couple of Nick’s collection, and of course we accepted his invitation to check out the rest of his fleet in the very near future. For as long as I have known his family, he has always had some pretty sweet rides, so I can only imagine what else he is hiding in that garage. Look for more feature articles, for sure this summer!!

The SAFE And The SERIOUS It’s called The SAFE And The SERIOUS and it was first created in Rhode Island and launched at car and truck shows, cruise nights and racing events as a creative effort to encourage kids, teens and families to Drive Safely and Buckle Up! on our roadways. The SAFE And The SERIOUS Founder and Creative Director, Jim Weicherding of Burrillville, Rhode Island, began his unique and creative campaign

es for teens and young adults by law enforcement agencies across the region. Jim travels around the state and region with his mobile traffic safety BUCKLE UP! reminder banners he displays on the sides of his pick-up truck as shown in the photo section of this page. He travels as far away as Cape Cod where his The SAFE And The SERIOUS “BUCKLE UP” reminder banners and posters are dispalyed at popular retail locations along busy travelled roadways from Bourne to Wellfleet, Cape Cod. Car shows and race tracks are the perfect venue for reaching out to kids, teens and families about traffic safety because everyone arriving and then leaving the events are driving to and from that location. With a truck full of handouts for kids featuring child passenger safety materials and teen related materials for safe driving and wearing seatbelts, Jim is able to reach out to a very large audience with his creative public safety efforts. He hopes to encourage more drivers and passengers to wear their seatbelts and drive safely due to a visual reminder in the faces and minds of people traveling on the road.

efforts at car and truck shows, cruise nights and racing events across the state of Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut with child passenger safety publication handouts, posters, hand painted billboards and full color graphic banners featuring classic cars and trucks along with the safety message reminder, BUCKLE UP! Since the popular traffic safety campaign was developed in 2003, a variety of traffic safety messages such as Drive Now...Text Later, including Drive Safe...Drive Serious themes, have been featured with numerous other visual applications such as posters, banners and full color hand painted billboards going on display at high school parking lot exits and out in front of police and fire departments across three New England states, RI, CT and Massachusetts. The hopes of Jim’s creative visuals include getting teenagers and young adults to wear seatbelts and drive carefully by displaying these full color visuals inside and outside at the parking lot exits of the student’s high school and reduce traffic related injuries and death due to excessive speeds, reckless driving and not being properly restrained in a moving vehicle. Jim has recently been asked to create texting safety imag-

Jim has received many local, state and federal honors and awards over the past few years while recently receiving a Citizen Service Medal from the state of Rhode Island and a Citizen Service Award from the state’s law enforcement agencies and police departments. He received these medals, awards and honors because of his creative and dedicated efforts to help keep kids, teens and families safer on our roadways every day of the year. Many RI., CT. and Massachusetts Police Department web sites feature Jim’s The SAFE And The SERIOUS Campaign materials for kids available as coloring cartoons and coloring pages they can print out and color in at home, or in their classrooms. Kids everywhere absolutely love his cartoon characters and coloring cartoons and can be seen coloring them in at car shows and racing events across RI and the region throughout the year. The SAFE And The SERIOUS Campaign has received many letters of support and letters of endorsement from local and state police along with letters of support and letters of endorsement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminis-

Banner or Billboard displayed along the bed of the truck stop by and say “Hi”. Chances are he will have something onboard for your kids to color in to learn about child passenger safety and raise awareness for your friends and family. “BUCKLE UP!” and “DRIVE NOW...TEXT LATER.” It could just save your life! Boston’s Showcase for the finest and fastest ED YESSAIAN In the past I have mentioned, multiple times, that the World of Wheels show has been

16| Motorhead Magazine - May 2015

on a recent upswing, regarding the quality of the entrants. Since being taken over by Rick Finnemore, the cars that are allowed to display are just simply incredible. There was a brief period where just about anyone could put a car in this show, but those days are gone. To be a part of Boston’s most prestigious showcase of automotive excellence, you have to bring nothing but you’re “A GAME”. Some of the area’s top customizers, fabricators, and paint specialists brought out the kind of rides that you just cannot do at home. In this issue I will have additional articles about some of my favorite cars, but also worth mentioning was the attendance by quite a few of the local car clubs. Mustangs of Massachusetts and New Hampshire Mustang Club both cleaned up in the judging, with pretty much every member walking away with an award or two. Local businesses also had some of their best work in the house, including Xtreme Restorations, Precision Speed and Custom, and New England Dragway. Mike Forte was on hand with the Tremec display and as usual, he had a huge crowd picking his brain for ideas and solutions for many people’s project car concerns. Every year I attend this show I really enjoy seeing the cars and the many friends that I bump into during the course of my day, but this year was truly one of my favorites, just because the level of quality was better than anything I’ve seen

in many, many years. Check out the rest of this issue for a few of my favorites, and of course be sure to let me know if you have any projects of your own in the works- ED@GetMotorhead.com

SHOP LIFE JIM WEICHERDING Do you think being a mechanic is just about turning wrenches and getting bloody knuckles with a slip of the wrist? It’s not. It’s much more than that. When you bring your ride to a favorite garage, or shop to have

repairs and mechanical services completed it is about your safety and customer satisfaction for the automotive work done to your vehicles.

a novice mechanic should ever attempt to repair, or service on your vehicles. Ask the right question; “Are your mechanics certified and experienced with the new automotive technology featured in my vehicle?” If you are pulling into a shop parking lot in a 1955 Chevy then you don’t really need to worry about newer high tech automotive services, but it still is a good idea to make sure that the mechanics are still skilled professionals. This is your pride and joy you want fixed and repaired. You still want the job done right! “Are your parts going to be quality parts, or something the nearest salvage yard can provide for less money and not up to your standards when repairing your ride?” Ask questions. Any honest shop owner will happily tell you the truth about what they intend on doing to your ride. There re plenty of honest

Most shops and garages take pride in their automotive repairs and mechanical services, but some could care less, and only want to drain your pocket and bank account in the process. These shops are far and few in between, but they are out there. I would highly recommend if you want to bring to your ride to a garage, or shop for anything mechanical, from a simple oil change to an engine swap, or rebuild, that you do some research first. That, and ask around with your friends and family members to see if they have ever dealt with this particular shop for repairs and services on their own vehicles. Another thing you need to do is make sure that if you own a classic car, or truck, and anything dated pre-computer aged technology featured in today’s automobiles, that you take that ride to a specialty shop, and garage. A general repair shop is not always the best road to take when you own a 1969 Pontiac GTO, or a 1979 Chevy Truck and you are looking to add a lift kit to your beast. A speed shop, or a specialty shop is always the best choice in these cases and there are plenty of these establishments out there. General mechanic shops and garages definitely have a place when it comes to automotive repairs and mechanical services, especially when it comes to todays tech standard vehicles. Computers and high tech components are not something

shop and garage owners out there and I know because I deal with most of them personally. SHOP LIFE is going to be a new feature in MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE and we will address plenty of your automotive concerns as well as take shop life bits and pieces from these shop and garage mechanics and auto body specialists with their take on being in a shop and garage environment every single day as a profession.

Both sides of the coin will be addressed each month from the serious to the humorous and everything that comes from those bleeding knuckles and dirty hands. Most of the mechanics and auto body shop employees I come in contact with on a regular basis could easily be stand-up comedians on weekend nights at any comedy club, but they would rather be that way in their own comfort zone turning wrenches and busting a knuckle on a part of your vehicle. Written by OUTLAW Well, it’s that time of year again. Warmer weather and sunny days can only mean one thing for sure; Bikers are everywhere! I know it may be something you may already be aware of, but motorcycles are not four wheeled vehicles and the danger factor on the road is substantially much greater for those of us riding on bikes during this time of year than surrounded by metal and air bags. This year, MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE will be featuring many articles about bikers, biker movies, biker role models and biker stories in general to bring content for this specific motoring group of individuals and enthusiasts. Motorcycles do have motors and they are not going to be alienated anymore from those of us who love the wind in their hair and bugs in our teeth and reading articles about the biker world. I love motorcycles! I think they can be some of the coolest rides on the road today and these enthusiasts are great people to meet and hang out with. They love life and love the freedom that riding a motorcycle brings them.

Personally, I love creating custom etched biker mirrors and glass for this crowd of enthusiasts and they really have some creative minds. Just wait until you read future articles about bikers and see some of the custom glasswork they request for their garages and homes to put on display for others to see and talk about. Conversation pieces that they are indeed. One thing I want to address with this article is about how important it is to make sure that you understand that bikers are out and about and their safety is my priority. Please give them room to ride. Allow these bikers the space they need to manage curves on two wheels and do not tailgate them. In other words; “stay off their asses!” Also make sure that you give bikers the right of way at 24| Motorhead Magazine - May 2015

intersections and on the roadways that you travel regularly. You do not need to be anywhere any faster than it takes to allow a biker to ride through an intersection, or drive past you safely on the open highway. A lot of my friends and family members ride motorcycles and I am concerned about their safety as well as those bikers I do not even know personally. So, please, remember to be careful

around bikers this season and help keep them alive to ride another day. Too many newscasts and newspapers telling us how many people died while riding on their bikes on a consistent basis. Let’s keep those news stories to a minimum this spring, summer and fall. I have some great biker stories and articles coming this season in MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE and I will be out cruisin’ around taking pictures of bikers and their rides for upcoming issues of this popular publication. READERS RIDES are now going to be featuring some great bikes and their riders as well as my READERS RIDES featuring cool cars, hot rods and trucks. Stay safe, and give bikers room to ride this cruisin’ season and let’s all be around for another season next year. “OUTLAW”

MID LIFE (CHRY

JOHN CONTI The Mopar Motorhead bug bit in 1968. At age 14, my attraction to the Plymouth Road Runner occurred when my cousins’ boyfriend, Rick Mazzaroppi, came by my house with his brand new, 1969, 4 speed, Rallye Red Plymouth Road Runner. (Those of you who remember this car knew it was one of the faster street cars of that era) We went for a ride which took us from my parents house in Cranston to Route 95 South all the

way to the East Greenwich town line. We then doubled back up Route 95 North to Route 10, Reservoir Ave, Park Avenue and home. The “fascinating thing” was this journey only took about 20 minutes. Reason being, we were traveling at close to, and sometimes above, 100 mph each way on Route 95. At the end of the “ride” which also constituted some stop light burnouts and power shifts, my first thoughts were “ I have to get one of these when I learn to drive”! Interestingly enough my wishes came true. 26| Motorhead Magazine - May 2015

My father was looking to purchase my mother a new car in early 1969. That is when my brother Al and I made a case for our father to purchase a muscle car. The Plymouth Road Runner fit my fathers budget very nicely and he purchased one new in April of 1969. Eventually I “took the Road Runner over” and drove it for four years. The usual street race modifications were done and there many revolutions around Kennedy Plaza in Providence as well as some street racing. However, as most of us did, the Road Runner was

sold for a newer more fuel efficient vehicle. It was then onto motorcycles but I always wanted to return to a muscle car and street race. I eventually sold my motorcycle and purchased a 1968 Plymouth Road Runner strictly for street racing. Along with my good friend David Varone, who drove a very fast 1968 Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet, Rick and other street racing friends, we “Christened” the newly built Route 295 with many street races before the highway was officially opened as well as after. We also would race on Route 6 the

highway and Route 114. However, I sold my 1968 Road Runner prior

to graduating college for another motorcycle. Eventually marriage to

of 2010.

My Road Runner still retains it’s original 383 motor as well as the original rear end. However, instead of the 3:23 rear gear the car was built with, the car now has a 3:55 rear gear. The car is shifted via a 1967 case 727 automatic transmission built by Don Robichaud. Another unique feature of the car is it’s color. My Road Runner is a true Code 97, Rallye Green, High Impact Paint (Hip) car. Ma Mopar came out with the HIP colors for the 1970 model year. How-

ever, my car was a late build, June 13th of 1969, and was fortunate enough to receive this color. Through research on the MoParts forum, I have been informed that no less than 23 but no more than 29, out of the approximate 82,000 383 cu. in. Road Runners built in 1969,. were painted this color. I guess the interesting thing would be to try and determine how many of these Rallye Green cars actually remain today. Other enhancements I have done were the addition of power steering

completed in June of 2001 by Ralph Miney, owner of Ralph’s Auto Body, Johnston, Rhode Island. In March of 2009, I decided that other restoration work was needed. I commissioned Timmy Alicea, of Performance Paint and Body also in Johnston, Rhode Island, to complete those tasks. Timmy did an excellent job of repainting my Road Runner as well as addressing some other issues that had surfaced over the eight year period from the first restoration. He completed his work in February

my wife Susan, two children, Michael and Stefanie and other responsibilities ended the “muscle car scene”. But, once you “have the bug”, you never let it go. I often told my wife Susan that I wanted to purchase another Plymouth Road Runner. I did just that in January of 1998. After searching for a period of about 5 years, I located this car. I had looked at approximately 6-8 Road Runners and called on many others with no luck and thought about buying a different model/body style Mopar. I located a triple black 1969 Dodge Charger in Webster, Ma. and made a phone call. During that conversation, I was made aware of a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner in Meriden, Conn. As soon as I ended my conversation with the individual who owned the Charger, I called on the Road Runner. I ended up purchasing the car for $3900.00 the next day and Rick and I brought the car home the following weekend.

Finally, and hopefully for the last time, I will resist the urge to spend more money on my “other favorite girl.” What will certainly help in this matter is the excellent workmanship, knowledge and

are approachable, friendly, and excited to share their story.

As many of you know by now, I get an occasional call from Motorhead owner, Lou Cicerone, to remind me to “broaden my horizons”

During my third trip around the building, I start talking to the owners and diligently take photos and notes, as well as try to notice some interesting things about the owners and their cars. It’s not always easy to narrow down exactly what I’m looking for on a given day, but sometimes I just see a car and it’s almost like love at first sight and I just know I want to hear all about the car, the build, and the performance it puts down. And that is exactly what happened when I came upon Nicholas Iwanec Junior’s 1972 Plymouth Duster. The first two things to catch my eye on Nicholas’ Duster were the Billet Specialties Street Lite Wheels and the Hemi Orange Pearl paint. From that point, I knew I had to check this thing out. The next clue to how badass this car really is, was the custom 416 striping and the hood decal that reads “416 Stroker”. I was hooked and I had to find out more about this badass MOPAR.

when looking for feature cars. With the World of Wheels show in Boston, Lou called with a few suggestions regarding some of our advertisers that would be in attendance and he also mentioned that I really need to start “…showing the MOPAR crowd a little love.” That came

as a bit of surprise, as I’ve been into Jeeps for over 25 years, but as far as MOPAR MUSCLE CARS, maybe I did need to seek out a few badass rides this weekend at the show. My usual routine at World of Wheels starts with one complete walk around, no camera, no pencil, just a walk around to take in all the sights and sounds. My second trip around the building involves making the list of potential feature cars and then I narrow it down from there. A lot of times I like to stand back and see if the owner’s

As mentioned, the engine is a 416 cubic inch monster that began its life as a 1972 340, that was bored .030 over and stroked to a 416. Hidden inside are a Scat 4” crank, I-Beam rods, IConn Forged dish pistons, and a Lunati VooDoo solid cam. Perched on top is a set of RHS/Indy LA-X heads, an Edelbrock Air Gap intake, and a Quick Fuel 750cfm carb. Exhaust chores start from a set of TTI step headers through a full 3” exhaust and through FlowMaster Super 10 mufflers. This combination has thus far been good for 525hp and over 550 ft/lbs of torque. To put that kind of power to the ground, Nicholas built a Mopar

8 ¾ rear with 4.10’s with Dr Diff axles. Mickey Thompson Sportsman Pro tires provide adequate traction and are tucked in nicely thanks to custom mini-tubbing and rear subframes. It’s hard to guess exactly what kind of elapsed times the car should run but I know that once Nicholas gets it to New England Dragway it’s going to be hard to miss that sweet Hemi Orange Duster tearing it up. Maybe the next time you see it, it will be “Wheels Up”, in Motorhead’s TRACK SHOTS section at the end of a few upcoming issues!! READERS RIDES Dennis’ 1966 PONTIAC GTO “POWER”.

Written by “ETCH” When you think of power plant muscle cars what should immediately come to mind is a Pontiac GTO.

This Pontiac also features a rear defroster, interior map lighting, emergency flashers and a remote mirror because you definitely need to look into this mirror just to see all of the other vehicles you just passed on the highway and wave bye, bye!

Of course, I am a bit bias when it comes to Pontiac GTO’s because I am building a bad ass 1969 GTO called, “OUTLAW”, based upon my popular book

Very comfortable bucket seats and middle console with a floor shift along with factory gauges

and magazine series featured each month in muscle car and hot rod magazines like this magazine for an example.

helps to get the job done when going for a cruise anywhere this big bad Pontiac GTO will take you.

This particular 1966 Pontiac GTO is very rare because of all of the featured vehicle options included in this classic muscle car. This GTO is a two-door sedan. It is equipped with Power Steering, Power Brakes, Power Trunk, Power Driver Seat and that is a lot of usages for the word,

This classic Pontiac GTO also features a very clean black vinyl top and black interior. The 1966 Pontiac GTO runs excellent and is a dream to cruise in. I can easily make that statement because one day last summer, me and my close friend, Dennis Lavallee, the vehicle owner, went to Cranston, Rhode Island to pick up the new issue of MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE and we drove around delivering them to retail locations

The 1966 Pontiac GTO has all of the PHS documentation to go with it. Under the hood you will find a power plant 1971, 400ci, V-8 engine that runs grrrrrrrreat! Talk about having a Tiger under the hood. This classic Pontiac GTO has just that purring on all 8 cylinders. A 2-speed power glide automatic transmission helps drive the fully restored GTO across the black top across New England. The Beach Boys are singing “I get around!” on my stereo as I am writing this READERS RIDES Article and that song could not be more appropriate for this classic car content featured in this publication. Believe it, or not, this classic Pontiac GTO was restored about 8 years ago, but you could not tell by looking at it with your own eyes. It features the original color scheme Martinique Bronze and looks absolutely gorgeous up close and viewed far away on the road as it cruises past you.

and to a car show later that day held in Massachusetts at Gillette Stadium, Bass Pro Shop Cruise Event held every other Thursday Night throughout the Crusin’ Season. I could write more about this beautiful classic ride but the pictures speak volumes about this Pontiac GTO. “Enjoy the ride!”

OUTLAW RUN Written by Jim Weicherding

Beyond The Book Series 29 The security guard sees the parked OUTLAW GTO and goes for his loud speaker mic. He yells for the driver in the black Pontiac GTO to stay where he is and do not move a muscle. Etch thinks to himself, (He told me to not move a muscle. Never said anything about moving a muscle car.) The GTO fires up and every piece of glass still left in the building begins to vibrate. Some of the looser pieces of glass windows begin to crash to the ground in the parking lot.

36| Motorhead Magazine - May 2015

The security guard reaches for his revolver and starts shooting aimlessly at Etch and his GTO still sitting still at the end of the dimly lit lot. “Holy crap! That idiot is shooting at me!” yells, Etch. The amped up Pontiac begins to fishtail from its parked spot and the sound of dual exhaust echoes throughout the area as still more shots ring out in the night air.

“That guy is nuts. Who does he think he is; Clint Eastwood?” The GTO screeches from around the back of the building sideways and heads straight for the exit at a high rate of speed, now being chased by the security guard in his security guard SUV. Etch looks into his rearview mirror and sees the SUV high beams coming towards him from his left side attempting to block him from exiting the parking lot headed towards the street approximately fifty yards away from the fleeing

muscle car. “This guy is out of his freakin’ mind!” said, Etch. The speeding SUV being driven by the security guard is coming towards the driver side of the OUTLAW GTO from an angle with its high beams affixed onto the GTO. Etch puts up his left arm to try and block out the headlights so he can see where he is driving. “Son-of-a...!!!” yells, Etch. The pursuing SUV is coming fast at the GTO as the Pontiac is attempting to cut off the lane before it blocks Etch from making it to the exit road from the parking lot. Another shot rings. Etch’s hair flusters in the air as the bullet grazes the hair on the back of his head and exits the passenger side window. “Damn it!” Etch, yells out, while trying to keep control of his power plant Goat after he realizes that he has nearly been shot by a security guard with a Clint Eastwood complex. “Why in the hell is he shooting at me?” asks, Etch, under his breath.

The SUV is just moments from ramming the fleeing GTO on the driver side door. Both vehicles are headed to the same location and Etch knows that this could get real bad at this high rate of speed. Etch, slams the brake pedal and mats it to the floor with both feet. The speeding GTO sways

... flames roaring towards the sky about thirty yards away and light up the darkness...

“Oh my God!” yells, Etch. He can see the flames roaring towards the sky about thirty yards away and light up the darkness around the burning vehicle. Suddenly, a gun shot rings out and then another. Etch can see the sparks from the gun go off to his right and can barely make out the security guard holding himself partially up on the wall and still trying to shoot him by the light of the flames caused by the burning SUV. “I am so out of here!” said, Etch.

side-to-side as the ass end lifts and then suddenly stops in its tracks. The pursuing security guard chasing the Pontiac in his SUV goes soaring inches past the nose of the black muscle car GTO. Etch can see the driver looking over in his direction as if in shock, just before the vehicle hits a low wall and starts to barrel roll to the right of the stopped car. The SUV is now rolling in the air from the driver side over the passenger side. Etch watches as the vehicle keeps spinning and spinning before clipping a big oak tree and then begins to flip over head over heel and bursts into flames before

Etch mats the gas pedal while the GTO starts spinning its rear tires leaving a cloud of smoke that equally matches the smoke caused by the wrecked security vehicle. Two more shots ring out as the GTO exits the parking lot and heads towards the open road.

PINEWOOD DERBY 2015

The Cub Scouts of Reading, MA get their race cars rolling! an aerodynamic race car. Prior to the races the cars are inspected, weighed, then they are confiscated until race day, to guarantee no further modifications or weight savings are added. Once race day arrives, the Cub Scouts are called up by age group and the cars are positioned at the top of a large wooden track that spans the length of the local gymnasium. Obviously the winner is the car that gets to the bottom of the track first, and this is confirmed by electronic equipment that immediately posts the order that each crossed the beams.

ED YESSAIAN Since my first few articles for Motorhead Magazine people have asked me when, exactly, I became so “obsessed” with the sport of drag racing. To be honest I never really knew the answer, until recently, when it all came back to me, in my office at Stoneham Ford’s Collision Center, where a friend of mine, Eamon LeBlanc, asked if we could paint something for his son. As soon as he showed me the Pinewood Derby car, joyous visions of my childhood flooded my brain and I could hardly wait to catch the racing action with the Cub Scout troops of Reading, Massachusetts.

Looking further into the whole Pinewood Derby event and its origin, I discovered that the competition has been running since the early 1950’s and was created in California by a man named Don Murphy, whose young son was too young to compete in the soap box derby races. If you are not familiar with this particular form of racing, the principal is very simple. The derby car itself starts out as a small block of wood that the Cub Scouts purchase as a kit that includes wheels, axles, and the appropriate hardware. Usually this becomes a great father/son project as the block of wood is carved and miraculously formed into

After a full afternoon of racing action, the local Cub Scout troops provided pizza, beverages, and other refreshments for the kids to enjoy. Along with the usual attendees, Stoneham Ford joined as a first time sponsor and provided a professional popcorn machine, handing out complimentary snacks all day. By late afternoon, after finally realizing where all my racing hopes and dreams originated, I went on line and ordered my own pinewood derby kit, to build and perfect until I have a son that is old enough to run it. Hopefully, my son will enjoy the Pinewood Derby as much as I did, then progress into New England Dragway’s Junior Dragster Program. From there, Racing will be LIFE!!!

Rhode Island Street Rodding Association JACK WOODMANSEE Washington County Swap Meet and Car Show will be held at the Washington County Fairgrounds, 77 Town House Road, Richmond, RI, Sunday, June 7, 2015. Rain or Shine. This event has been at this site for approximately thirty years. Before the Rhode Island Street Rodding Association was managing the event it was under the auspices of Vintage Wheels. While I was unable to ascertain the original start date I do know that I attended in

legal and we will give you a space to accommodate it. So you guys with a forty foot trailer will pay the same price as a twenty foot. The more you bring the higher your potential sales! You are guaranteed that we will not run out of spaces. If you have a car for sale bring it in, as this meet will give you chance to present it to an audience of enthusiasts. A spot in our Car Coral, when you first enter the fields, is available for a $10 fee. Two years ago my friend was quite elated with his purchase of a 1970 Chevelle SS from the large

Class L; Open; this is a class that may include an old Volkswagen, or a Lotus, specialty vehicles, that do not fall into the above classes. Class M; Old Skool Kool up to 1949. Old Skool Kool is a relatively new class for us. We are demarcating this class as a non-billeted traditional hot rod. Our intentions are to highlight the recent surge of interest in hot rods from the 40’s 50’s and 60’s without the billet flair of present street rods. Sort of a back to basics ideology and still may be using the safety features of today’s vehicles, if the builder desires. Such items as disc brakes and seatbelts are certainly qualities that transcend a vehicle to a safer mode of transportation. Other features include the ever popular DJ-Boom from 10AM to 3PM. Breakfast & lunch will be available on the premises. All cars are welcome. A modest $5 per spectator donation will enable us to continue this event for another 30 years. For Further Information call Charlie at 401-828-1657 or 401-821-0420. Also Jack at 401-364-7323 or go to http://ristreetrodding.org/Fall_Swap___Car_ Event.html, the web site www.ristreetrodding. org will also give you a full slate of our activities throughout the season. Last but certainly not least is that this is an easy drive as the site is only four minutes from route 95.

1979. That year I purchased an SBC “snowflake” intake that was originally cast at the Winter Foundry and used on the Z28 Camaro. The reader may conjure an anecdote of his own as I know that many attended this venue. After a recent short hiatus occurred, RISRA has assumed the leadership role in this historic event for the last four years. In previous years it was held on the last Sunday in April. The event has been changed to the first Sunday in June (7th) to hopefully take advantage of clement weather. The gates will open at 6 AM and this is when the swap meet portion commences. If you wish to show your vehicle at the car show plus attend the swap meet you may also enter at this time. $35 is the fee for a swap meet space. There is an early online registration that will save the vendor $10.00. A pdf form is available on line at www. ristreetrodding.org. Click “events” then click “Wash Swap Meet” to download the form. The fee includes a mandatory one day temporary license and cost of the space. This is a huge venue. What sets our meet apart from others is the size of the space, you can bring in any vehicle that is street

selection on hand. Last year he bought a very low mileage truck. Spectator’s parking is unlimited and you are right next to the vendors. If you buy a large item you can drive your vehicle directly to the booth to load the item.

50/50 mix and also can be purchased premixed.

Seems like the buzz this racing season is E-85 and Methanol Injection. Next month I will write an article on E-85, but this month I will focus on the pros and cons of Methanol Injection systems. Some of you might ask, “What is Methanol Injection?” It is the process of injecting a mixture of water and methanol into an engine. The theory is the water will instantly vaporize and pull heat out of engine’s pistons, cylinder heads, and lower air charge temperatures. Methanol injection is generally used in motors under boost where knock thresholds can be easily exceeded. The

Methanol Injection is really not a new idea. It was used back prior to World War II in piston driven military aircraft. It allowed the planes at the time to increase power at take off from short runways and also during dog fights for an additional burst of power on demand.

added Methanol provides for additional octane to prevent detonation. When tuning these systems usually additional timing is added to provide a significant power increase. Usually it is a

46| Motorhead Magazine - May 2015

Seems like today most of the modern high performance Camaro’s, Corvette’s, Mustang’s, Viper’s, etc. come equipped with normally aspirated high compression motors. Most are in the 10:1 to 11:1 compression ratio, which is generally a little too high to run significant boost on stock motors. Several companies offer supercharger and turbocharger kits for these modern muscle cars, usually limited to about 6-8 pounds of boost. The higher the boost level the more potential for detonation and engine damage. These kits are relatively safe at stock boost levels, but usually customers get use to the power and want to turn it up a little. Race gas can also be used to prevent detonation, but it is very expensive and a hassle to find locally. 93 Octane and Snow’s Performance Boost Juice gives you and equivalent of around 116 octane. There are several companies that offer Methanol Kits. Most are set up for a specific vehicles which either use a signal from the MAF Sensor or MAP Sensor to add in the desired amount of methanol under boost. When tuning a

vehicle with a methanol system, you want to start out on the rich side with conservative timing for your boost level. You then want too slowly pull fuel out of the tune until you get to a safe air/fuel ratio usually around 11 to 11.5. Once the air/fuel ratio is good, slowly add timing while

watching out for knock. If a minor amount of knock is present, some systems allow you to inject more methanol in at a faster rate. A properly tuned system can yield 50 – 80 HP on highly modified boosted cars. The main issue with Methanol Injection is pump failure. If the pump fails and no methanol is supplied, your tune will be lean and have additional timing. Hopefully the knock sensors will save the motor, but it is somewhat of a risk. You can tune the car without additional timing, but you will not see the full power potential of Methanol Injection. Precision Dyno is a completely independent dyno testing facility. We offer Custom Cams, Ported Cylinder Heads, Supercharger & Turbocharger installation packages for GM LSX powered vehicles. We specialize in GM tuning with EFILive tuning software. If you want your ride independently tested give us a call at 401-996-2166.

It is always fresh and the restaurants that I frequently dine at take great pride in their establishments, staff, food and drinks. I love to drive to the southern part of Rhode Island and dine by the ocean. The seaside communities in this state and region are excellent places to stop and grab something to eat and drink on the way too, or coming from,

MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE will be featuring a brand new DRIVE & DINE Page for those of us who eat food at some point during the morning, daytime, or nighttime. Is that you? Of course it is! Not a big fan of seafood? Then don’t worry. There are plenty of diners, restaurants, pizza parlors and fast food establishments with plenty of menu variety to select from. Nothing better than a big burger with fries, or a packed to the edge pizza, or a plate of meat, vegetables and

potatoes to satisfy any food craving that you may have anytime, day, or night, in this region of the United States. I will be driving around New England this summer and writing some great reviews of these food establishments so when you happen to be in the vicinity of these dining businesses you can stop by, grab a bite to eat, and make your own decisions about how the food is. We all have our

tastes and likes and that will be entirely up to you what you consider good food and great food. I can only suggest these establishments and leave the rest up to you. So, while you are out and about driving here, and driving there, please stop by one of the many excellent dining establishments

and give them a try. It is good for you, their business and the local economy. We all need to support our local businesses and help them thrive and keep people working. I cannot emphasize this enough so I will write it so you can read it; “Please tip your servers well. They work hard and have bills to pay!” “Drive in, sit down, relax, place your order, dine and enjoy!”

12 VOLT NEWS IN-CAR VIDEO ENTERTAINMENT GEORGE ARAKELIAN, JR. Custom Car Stereo Center

In-car video entertainment….. for those of us who spent our childhood on road trips, crammed in the back of a station wagon with nothing to do but punch our brothers or sisters, it seems like a godsend. For the parents who were trapped in the same car with three kids who decided to pass the time by punching, pinching and asking, “Are we there yet?” it seems like nirvana. But for today’s kids, it’s becoming par for the course. With technology shrinking, drivers are no longer dependent on their radios to entertain passengers. Cars and trucks can now be outfitted with VCRs, DVD players and even the latest video game systems. While the entertainment systems’ range includes everything from basic portable DVD players to large ceiling-mounted viewing screens, the most luxurious viewing option for many car passengers is headrest monitors. With headrest monitors, each passenger has a personal monitor mounted on the back of the headrest of the seat directly in front of them. Not only do personal monitors of this sort cut down on issues like sun glare, but in some systems, each monitor can display different programming (ending fights over what to watch) or even use different entertainment devices. That means that while one passenger watches a DVD, another can play video games. Of course, there are some downsides to built-in headrest monitors. The systems tend to be very expensive. While some manufacturers offer the systems straight from the factory, they can add thousands of dollars to the price of a car. Actually, only a few luxury car manufacturers currently offer factory-installed headrest monitors -- making them an expensive addition to an already expensive purchase. Aftermarket headrest monitors are more common, but these are still an expensive proposition and usually require professional installation But, if it is headrest monitors you want, A Custom Car Stereo Center has you covered. So buckle up, quit bothering your sister and if you ask to stop at McDonald’s one more time, we’re turning this 12 Volt News article right around and no one will learn anything about headrest monitors. So be good, and go on to learn about the different types of headrest monitors. If you’re in the market for a new car, you’ve got a lot of factory-installed entertainment options. Selecting a factory-installed system makes providing entertainment for your passengers easy. The system is set up and ready to go from the moment you own the car. You’ll have a warranty for all of the entertainment system’s parts and even the labor required to install them. You’ll also know that all the components have been designed to work with your car, and they’ll fit seamlessly into the design and operation of the vehicle. For those with their hearts set on factory-installed headrest monitors, you’re choices are more narrow than if you considered other factory-installed in-car entertainment systems. Currently, only a few luxury carmakers offer factory-installed headrest monitors on their cars. For those in the new car market who want this feature, you’ll have to limit your car shopping to luxury SUVs and crossovers. Some sedans do offer the monitors; however, they tend to be extreme-luxury sedans like Maybachs. Even at the mere luxury level, a factory-installed system will set you back quite a bit. For example, the Land Rover optional headrest monitor package adds around $2,500 to the vehicle’s price. Aftermarket systems can be more affordable. For

one, you don’t have to buy a new car to get them. The headrest monitors alone are really not that expensive. Seven-inch (17.8-centimeter) monitors start at around $80. However, mounting these monitors can be very complex. You have to cut into the back of the headrest, run the wires into the seats and route them to the input device (VCR, DVD player or game system). And don’t forget that you have to put the seat back together again. That’s something that’s out of the league of many do-ityourselfers, which means installation costs need to be added to the relatively low price of some of these stand-alone headrest monitors. A less labor-intensive option is to replace your car’s headrests with headrests that have monitors pre-mounted. Many car audio suppliers manufacture these, and installation is as easy as popping your old headrest off, putting the new one on and running the wires to the input device. A set of two of these ready-to-go headrests can cost upwards of $800. Some even hide a DVD player behind the screens, which folds out of the way to change disks. That makes installation even easier since you don’t have to run additional wiring to a remote device. While a number of factory and aftermarket headrest monitors have a DVD player in the headrest, behind the screen -- remember, the screen slides out of the way to access the player -- there are a number of other system options. While the headrest monitor and DVD player combo may be the easiest to install, it also has some limitations. In many cases, it means that both headrests can’t watch the same DVD. These systems also make it difficult for the monitors to show other media, like video games. It may seem like a small point, but where the media players are located is actually pretty important. Some factory systems place the DVD player (or players) in the dash, making it relatively simple for the driver or front passenger to load discs for the passengers. Other factory systems place the DVD player in the rear cargo area. That allows for a lot of different types of media in the car. A large DVD changer can fit, and so can one (or more) video game systems. However, this placement has its downsides, too. It can’t be safely accessed while the car is in motion. Also, if there’s cargo in the cargo area, access to the media may be further limited. Plus, running the wires from the monitors through the vehicle and into the cargo area also complicates installation for aftermarket systems. Other systems put the media between the front seats, facing the rear seat passengers. That allows for the back seat passengers to access the media players to change discs or games. On the other hand, such placement puts the media players at risk for getting kicked or stepped on as people enter or exit the car, and not every vehicle has enough space between the front two seats for a media player (or two). The way many headrest monitor manufacturers try to solve these difficulties is by providing wireless remote controls with each monitor. That way, even if the media player is far away from the passenger, they’re still able to control it. Come down to A Custom Car Stereo Center and explore your options for a aftermarket Entertainment Player in your vehicle.
