True to the Game MIKE GALLO Now here’s something that you don’t see everyday … This 1992 Mustang notchback is a gorgeous car. It stirs up emotions in a few different ways for the loyalists out there that try to stay true to keeping a certain manufacturers motor paired with the same brand vehicle. There are few people that call it a sin but I call it staying true to the game. Meet John Furtado. He is a BMW master technician during the day and at night he spends countless hours working on his Mustang. Now his choice for the motor is going to upset some of you but others may care less but this mustang is powered by a Chevrolet LS motor. At just 5.3 liters paired with a 76mm turbo, this car has put down through the turbo 400 transmission 771 rear-wheel horsepower on a mild tune up. Now look closely at this car, it is truly a work of art. When you consider that John, on his own, has built this car from the ground up, it is nothing short of amazing. The 8.50 roll cage has been bent, installed and welded by John himself and it has passed the NHRA certifications. He has also done all of the custom fabrication on the car from inside the motor compartment to all the tubing for the exhaust and the turbo. The car also rides on beadlock rear wheels and has Diamond pis-

tons inside the motor with 317 heads and a super victor intake. The car also has an air-to-water intercooler and is tuned by a mega squirt system. John has piloted this car at New England Dragway in the no time class. John has managed to run mid 9 second passes in the quarter mile and is working on getting the car into the 8 second range. This is definitely attainable considering the amount of horsepower this car has put down. If you ever get the chance to meet John, you will know right off the bat that he is a great kid. He is very down-to-earth and humble. Being this young and talented is a rare commodity in this day and age and I wish him the best of luck with his drag racing career. So like I said, if you are one of the types that get offended when there is a different motor between the frame rails of a certain vehicle, it’s time to get over it. Just accept that we are all drag racers no matter what motor we run or which car drive, we are all true to the game. I often think back to the days, way-back-when, as I make my way to an area classic auto show or cruise night across New England.

How could all of this go away so fast? What was the need to expedite technology and keep creating new things and make life more complex and complicated? Would we all better off if it all happened at a slower pace? I don’t see any harm in mover slower and finding appreciation with what life has to offer in a simpler fashion. Vehicle manufacturers could have just kept building what is now dubbed classic cars and trucks for a few more decades. We also didn’t need to recreate the wheel but that happened too. I remember how much fun it was to just hop into my dad’s Chevy with the family and head off to the drive-in to watch a great family movie on a Saturday night. The songs playing on the am radio station and trying to sing along with my sisters to the music. Never knew the words then but boy do I know them now. I could sing practically ever oldies song word for word today because I’ve listened to them about a kazillion times over the past 4 decades. Most of you reading this article right now probably could claim to do the same thing.

New England Dragway’s Technical Department thoroughly inspects each vehicle to not only make sure your car or truck is ready to compete but to make sure your competitors are within guidelines as well. While there are a handful of rules, any currently registered, insured, and inspected vehicle should be able to check off the few requirements necessary to compete… •

Switched Sides MIKE GALLO Well it’s about time that I introduce myself. My name is Mike Gallo and I have been in this car game for over 25 years. I have drag raced for a good portion of that and I have owned over 43 Mustang Foxbody’s. My last Foxbody Mustang was called The Punisher. It was a Vortech YSI supercharged small block with a C4 transmission that ran 9.3 seconds at over 150 miles per hour. In the quarter mile, this was done with a full exhaust including tailpipes at 3500 lbs. I have also owned quite a few naturally aspirated Mustangs and have had nitrous in a couple as well. But as I’ve gotten older, I decided I wanted something that could take corners, was still fast and that I could drive across country at the drop of a hat if need be. I decided to switch sides to Chevrolet and buy a 2009 Corvette ZO6. I have fallen in love with this car and everything that it

is capable of doing. With 505 horsepower stock, a 6-speed transmission, 427 cubic inches of LS7 motor, giant front and rear cross drilled brakes all in a lightweight package weighing in at 3100 lbs, what more could I ask for? Now don’t get it twisted, I still got love for Mustangs and I always will but I have learned that all brands of cars can be great just depending on what you like. I was a die-hard Ford fan for most of my life and it took a toll on me to buy another brand. But I have to tell you, everyday when I get in this car and fire it up, it puts a smile on my face. I have recently started to get the bug back to drag race so maybe, just maybe, I’ll pick up some drag radial tires and head to the track to see what my ZO6 is capable of. I have also thought of road racing the car, as I have never tried that before but we shall see.

Etch sees a group of police officers standing in the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot eating donuts and drinking coffees. He remembers how one police officer he knew referred to donuts to be the equivalent of power circles. “They aren’t donuts. They are power circles!” said, Etch, under his breath as he walks back to his GTO. One of the police officers stops dead in his tracks and points at Etch standing near his GTO on the off ramp. The police officers see him and start running towards their parked police cars in the donut shop parking lot. Etch makes his way back to his waiting GTO, jumps into the driver seat, turns the ignition key and all hell breaks loose. Etch backs his classic muscle car onto the highway while the police cruisers are driving directly towards him the wrong way down the off ramp. Etch is shocked by the sight he sees and floor stomps the GTO gas pedal leaving a cloud of burnt tire smoke in his wake covering the confused police officers vehicles. OUTLAW launches down the highway reminding Etch about all of his passes at the area dragways over the

years in New England and New York State. The GTO is shakin’ and rattlin’ as Etch shifts up into another gear. The police cars are minus two vehicles now because of the billowing burnt tire smoke and misjudgment on how to steer when you can’t see two feet in front of you. Not easy by a long shot even if you are a trained driver. The other surviving police cars and their police oﬃcer drivers are still in pursuit of the OUTLAW GTO just the same. Etch is traveling at a high rate of speed down the open highway and that’s where OUTLAW feels at home other than at a dragway. He sees the flashing lights on the pursuing police cars and just smiles. He’s almost getting used to being a wanted man and the adrenaline is pushing him to limits he once thought were unreachable. Etch hopes the police have not contacted dispatch and are right now, sending more police vehicles to a destination point further down the highway in an effort to box his power plant GTO in from any further attempts to elude justice. Etch thinks to himself: “Justice? What justice? They take away my rights and

my freedoms and then when I fight back, they think it’s justice to try and stop me?” The OUTLAW GTO keeps cruising at a high rate of speed down the open highway when Etch finally sees what he was hoping would not happen; a police vehicle roadblock ... and a TANK! A tank? Are you freakin’ kidding me? A tank? Etch slams his brakes hard and cuts his steering wheel to the left and then right trying to maintain control of his vehicle. OUTLAW stops broadside on the highway with the passenger side facing the roadblock and his drivers side facing the oncoming police vehicles not able to keep up with him just moments ago. Etch looks at the approaching police cars and then back at the roadblock. “A Tank? Really? A freakin’ tank?”

TIME TO THINK WINTER By BILL PRATT We may be in the thick of the dog days of summer, but it’s the right time to start thinking about winter and what that means for vehicle updates or maintenance. BEFORE WINTER HITS There is some basic maintenance that you’ll want to do before the cold weather hits to make sure your car is mechanically ready for winter. Make sure your headlights are working and properly adjusted. Test your battery. A battery that is weak tends to die quickly in cold weather. Check your alternator, radiator, heater core and all hoses. Repair or replace anything that is cracked, worn or leaking. Check the air filter and replace if necessary.

Tire inventories will be in good shape heading into the fall but will thin out quickly as we approach winter. By the time the first winter weather hits and the card-carrying members of the summer tire club panic, tire selection will be hit or miss and wait times will be longer. August and September are good times to plan ahead and grab those winter tires even if you intend to have them mounted later in the season. IGLOOS IN MOTION

Check your car’s antifreeze and windshield washer fluid levels and top off as needed. This is also a good time to switch your washer fluid to a winter blend able to withstand subfreezing temperatures.

Clean your car’s windshield and replace your windshield wipers with good quality heavy-duty winter blades. Winter blades are bigger and sturdier to better handle the inclement weather. Here at our shop, we like the Rain-X Latitude and Anco Winter Blades, but there are other good brands on the market. Wash and wax your car. Clean the inside of your vehicle. If you don’t already have floor liners or mats, this is a good time to invest in a quality set such as Weathertech or Husky. They’ll protect your carpets from snow, ice, salt and slush. WINTER TIRES It is a myth that if you have an all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicle, you don’t need snow tires. All wheel drive will help you get started on a slipper road. It does not help you stop. Four-wheel drive means you’ll get stuck in deeper snow. All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive provide extra traction when accelerating. They provide no advantage when braking or cornering. Having the right tread and compound design is key to being able to handle any kind of winter weather. Most all-season tires don’t qualify. A good winter tire is made from a compound that retains some flex in the cold. Tires that harden will lose grip much sooner than a tire that can conform to the shape of the pavement. That affects braking as well as grip when cornering or launching from a stop. Tread design is also key. The tread has to be able to grip snow or slush without clogging up and effectively becoming a runner that glides across the surface. That means wider tread grooves and lateral tread gaps suﬃcient to slough off water, slush, and snow as the tire rotates. A blocky tread design gives more edges to grab the pavement or dig into snow or slush. We’ve tried various winter-rated tires but, hands down, the best tire we’ve 30| Motorhead Magazine - September 2018

seen for FWD passenger cars or SUV’s is the Bridgestone Blizzak. Our 2011 Fusion typically couldn’t make it up our business driveway on snowy days until we installed the Blizzaks. Now it does it with zero drama. Michelin X-Ices are another excellent winter tire.

Don’t be that guy that is driving down the street in an igloo with one small section of window cleared to peek through. One, it’s illegal and will get you ticketed and, two, it’s a bit like running a gauntlet wearing an eye patch and blinders. You’ll have no idea what’s coming at you except from

BE PREPARED Now is the time to start thinking about your emergency preparedness kit for winter driving. Here are a few items you should keep in your car during the winter: Sunglasses to combat glare off the ice and snow, a chargedup cell phone charger, flashlight with batteries, first aid kit, warm clothes (hat, gloves, hoodie, socks), thermal blanket, water, non-perishable snacks, 5-pound bag of cat litter (to throw under tires if you get stuck), a small collapsible shovel, a few packs of chemical hand warmers (HotHands, etc.), aerosol spare-tire filler, jumper cables, road flares, tow rope, toilet paper. That sounds like a lot of stuff to carry in your car, and it is, but it will all come in handy should you get stuck for a long period of time. Invest in a duffel bag or Rubbermaid-type container to corral it all. With just a little preparation, you can be ready for a safe winter driving experience. Greg’s ‘65 Lincoln

By JED GREEKE This month’s featured vehicle is Greg’s 1965 Lincoln! While this car is a stunning finished project that Greg cruises to many shows in with his 8 year old grandson Jake, it wasn’t always what you see now. Greg, with the help of Paintwork’s Unlimited has brought this Lincoln back from the dead! Greg wanted to build something out of the ordinary, after seeing the movie “Hit and Run” he chose the 65 Lincoln and started searching. Ultimately he found what he was looking for in Lincoln, Nebraska in 2013, and was able to negotiate the deal down to $800 and 10 lobsters!! The complete restoration took place shortly after and included a 2014 5.7L Hemi crate motor paired to a turbo 400 and a 9 inch Ford rear end with a 3.88 Posi. Greg spared no expense and went top of the line on every upgrade including a spectacular Air ride system made by BC Fab, 4 way disc brake conversion, Vintage Air, 20 inch Detroit Steelies, Pypes Electric cut outs and a custom interior completed by Two Girls Upholstery. You know you’re a motorhead when you get excited

1934 FORD COUPE Yes, I was born a motorhead. That’s my DNA! The story starts with my Dad coming home from WW2 driving a 1941 Lincoln Zephyr Coupe 12 cylinder hot rod. He then met my mother and they married soon after. Then came me, pedal cars and bicycles and the next thing you know, I was running around playing at his gas station helping him work on cars and motorcycles. I loved it! After school I would run straight home and into the garage. School continued, always learning and tinkering with something-fixing it or trying to make it better.

under those cars and trucks, taking parts back home for my next creation. Fast forward a couple years, I was 12 or 13 years old, sitting on a pillow helping my Dad move cars in and out of the garage. He taught me how to drive around this time. Then I was onto his big Indian motorcycle, pushing it down the hill of our driveway because I was too small to kick start it to take a ride around the neighborhood. At that moment I was hooked!

I was always paying attention to what my Dad was doing so I could learn how to repair broken parts. Back

Later it was onto buying and fixing up old cars just to be driven for a little while then placed out in front of my Dad’s gas station with a “For Sale” sign. Then it was onto the next project. My Dad always had something interesting for me to work on. One day he brought in

With help from my friend, Victor Dopart, showing

me how to work with vinyl, pointing me in the right direction as to where I could purchase the correct material and finding the right tools for working with metal, he made the job much easier. With a lot of “trial and error”, we created something very different yet simple-how a hot rod should be, in my opinion.

The Gibbon fiberglass reproduction Ford body is sitting on an original 1934 Ford boxed frame. The Ford Boss 351 c 4v, 4 bolt main, 30 over with Keith Black pistons, Hastings moly rings, Scorpion roller rockers, 280 Competition cam with hydraulic lifters, Edelbrock intake and carburetor, Sanderson ceramic coated headers all supply the power. Keeping it cool is a Walker radiator. Bolted to a Ford 4 speed top loader transmission. A vintage Franklin QC rear end with 31 spline axles and 3.46 gears. Up front is a 4â&#x20AC;? drop axle with a Vaga steering box. The vehicle is stopped by 1958 Buick aluminum drums and brakes on all four axles. Riding on 1934 Ford 16â&#x20AC;? wire wheels. My brother David installed his custom made wiring harness. Comforts include heat and A/C, power windows and power trunk. All of which took a lot of time and effort to achieve such a radical ride. As I stated earlier, school continues! I am still working on all the small issues of road handling and driver comfortability. We learn as we go, making changes and having a great time doing it. Motorheads forever! Thanks Dad!

What You Should and Shouldn’t Be Tossing This Winter

The most challenging task that we are trying to put off this winter is ultimately cleaning out the garage. There are a ton of items to go through, from left over assorted tools, to containers of grease, to half empty bottles of fluids that are bringing us a sense of unnecessary clutter. What even the most vigilant person hasn’t considered is the actual probability of their products being “expired” or well past use. When perusing through your stash of goods on top off your toolbox and shelves, you might want to keep one basic question in mind. “How long have I had this?” One of the most prominent contaminants that will unfold right before your eyes which can be a dreadful harm to your vehicle is hydroscopic fluids. What does hydroscopic mean? Hydroscopic describes something that will readily take up and retain moisture.

A common hydroscopic fluid that would cause quite a conundrum is brake fluid. When brake fluid absorbs moisture, the boiling point of the fluid becomes lower and will cause the fluid to compress less. Moisture within your braking system will give the fluid the ability to limit your braking power, and in turn rust out your brake lines and all necessary hardware and components. Being a New Englander during the winter months will accelerate your fluid’s water-sucking habits and this is why it is discourage to keep larger containers on your garage shelf. If possible, buy the smallest bottles at your local Auto Parts retailer.

Randolph slowly walks to the end of his driveway and stands there holding his water hose in his hand. “What’s your problem old man? We aren’t bothering you or your dump of a house and yard.” Randolph just continues to stand at the end of his driveway and never says a word. A couple imports vehicles roll up onto the scene and the skateboarders approach both vehicles with something cupped inside their hands. The teens exchange cash for drugs and Randolph watches the exchanges in disgust. A couple of the vehicle passengers toss empty beer cans onto the street directly in front of Randolph’s driveway. “What are you gonna do about it pops?” Randolph takes his water hose and starts spraying the teens outside and inside the vehicle with the cold water. The driver doors on both vehicles open up quickly as the teens step out to confront Randolph still standing in his own driveway. The teens are yelling at him while he continues to stand there silently not saying a single word. A moment later, everyone turns their attention back to the street. “Who owns these cars?” asked the police oﬃcer. He just drove upon the scene unnoticed.

The teens stand there at the end of Randolph’s driveway in shock looking at the police officer. “Move them out of the middle of the street and do it right now!” The police officer watches as the teens get back into their vehicles and the skateboarders hold their position on the street. “You don’t belong here. Get your asses home immediately!” yelled the police officer. The two vehicle drivers make obscene gestures to Randolph unseen by the police officer. The vehicles drive away slowly and the skateboarders walk away from the scene. The police officer waves at Randolph and drives away from the scene as well. Randolph is left standing in his driveway alone. “Damn punks!” He slowly walks back up his driveway and resumes washing his 1957 Chevy on this very hot summer day. He soon hears his dogs scratching on the front window panes and whimpering to come outside with him in the driveway. He just smiles and waves them off thinking that it is way too hot to allow them to come outside in the driveway. Randolph sits back down onto his milk crate and begins washing his classic vehicle rims. The dogs begin to aggressively scratch at the front window panes and begin growling instead of whimpering like they were doing only moments earlier. He looks back at both dogs and gestures for them to go lie down inside the house and let him finish washing his car before the real hot temps arrive at the height of the day. That sun shining straight over his head will not be very pleasant at all to deal with. The sooner he gets done with his task at hand the better. While Randolph washes his rims the two dogs are acting frantic now in the front windows. He glances up at both of them confused by the way they are acting. They normally don’t act this way at all.

The dogs drop down from the window panes and Randolph goes back to washing his rims. Suddenly, both German Shepards leap through the window panes and Randolph looks up to see shattered glass everywhere and his dogs headed towards him running and barking. He glances down at his shiny rim and sees a reflection of two masked intruders standing directly behind him. Both men look up and see the two dogs rushing towards them. They leap back over the row of bushes to avoid being torn to shreds by these two hundred plus pound beasts set on killing them both. To be continued...

MOTORCYCLE MASTERS WINNE TOM McCARTHY He did it again; Scott Levasseur won the New England Dragway Motorcycle Masters competition. For the forth-time in the six year history of the Masters, the baddest man from the Street Fighter class of racing at NED, won the Masters competition. He is simply one of the best motorcycle drag racers ever to come from the ranks of the motorcycle drag racing at New England Dragway. Four times Scott Levasseur, of New Hampshire, has proven he knows his drag bikes: he’s won the Masters on two different ones, he knows the habits of his opponents, he knows the track, and he can race it with dead-on precision when needed. This year he defeated Carl Cicchetto of Barrington, NH by running an 8.670 elapsed time pass on his 8.67 dial-in. How’s that for precision? He needed it too, because Carl dialed a 13.08 pass and went 13.02 on his run! Yes Carl went a little too quick and broke out, but still, running an 8.67 flat on an 8.67 dial – that’s impressive in final round racing under pressure. No doubt about it, Scott is a bad man on a drag bike.

Scott Levasseur of New Hampshire has won the New England Dragway Motorcycle Masters event for times in six years as of 2018.

Now to add to the drama, a week before this race I was getting messages from racers about the Masters “hey you better check in with Scott, he hurt his bike this weekend and he may not make the Masters.” The Masters war run on Sunday, August 5th, 2018 and the weekend before was a Top Bike & Street Fighters weekend at local track New England Dragway, on Route 101, in Epping, New Hampshire. On the weekend before the Masters event, sure enough, Scott had mechanical problems and on Sunday night, just a week before the big race, he was questionable. So I called him. “Yeah I hurt it today” he told me. “I don’t know if I can fix it in time, but give me 24 hours and I’ll know better.” I did just that and by Tuesday, just six days before the race Scott informed me, “I should be okay. If not I’ll race my red bike, or borrow one if I need to, but count me in.” He was determined to give this event his best effort, no matter what. Dave Nadeau, who was scheduled to be in the event this year hurt his bike earlier in the season and he needed to be replaced for the eight bike field. Tommy Galligan was next on the alternate list and Tommy had a previous engagement and that sent the alternate list hunting for Jim Jordan, but Jim was recovering from a hand injury and couldn’t make it. But Mark Bolduc was ready, willing and able “It would be an honor” he said, just days before the race. So on Sunday morning, August 5th, eight of the best from NED’s 2017, competition year came to the track as honored guests, no entry fees, to race in the race of champions. EACH year at New England Dragway, the trophy in drag racing that rivals the Stanly Cup, is rolled out in honor of the faithful so that the NED motorcycle/sled drag racers elite can compete to get their names engraved on the art work. The trophy is constructed largely of used, worn out drag bike components donated by Harry’s Machined Parts of Northboro, MA, our thanks to Rick Stetson for this. The trophy stands about 7’ tall and weighs in at over 75 pounds. They are specifically targeted because the weekly point’s race competitors are the back-bone of the race track’s core. It’s the weekly “weekend warriors” that contribute the most to every race tracks bottom line. Week-in-week-out these are the racers who significantly impact every racing facilities bottom line. So a race was devised just for them, to give the faithful something more to shoot for. The New England Dragway Motorcycle Masters race has no money attached to it. To win the race get’s the racer a plaque, donated by Just Wood Flooring of NH, and their name engraved onto a beautiful art work along-side the names of the best motorcycle/sled racers at New England Dragway. That’s it. The reason there is no jack pot, no money involved is the whole racing competition is about having the honor to be invited to race in the Masters and compete against only the best of the best. It’s about honor, pride and dignity; words seldom spoken in this day and age. To be eligible to race, a racer first has to be the winner or R/U from his or her point’s class in order to qualify for the next season’s event. There are three eliminators at New England Dragway for the two-wheeled racers: Top Bike, Motorcycle/Sled and Street Fighter. So the winner and runner-up will yield six racers for the elite eight bike ladder. Unless of course someone wins more than one class of competition which Ed Hughes has done more than once.

But no matter; any open slots of the Masters ladder are filled by voting done by the racers who raced only in the season in question. For example, next year in 2019, the event will be to see who was the best of the best from this year’s 2018 season. Any open spots on next year’s ladder and all the racers who raced this year will vote between 1 January, 2019 and June 1st and whoever the racers vote for, the top voted racers will fill the ladder slots. Any ties in voting are normally settled by reaction times after voting is closed. On race day, the Masters racers, without a gate fee, show up and draw names to establish the ladder. They then announce their dial in numbers and flip a coin to establish lane choice. One racing begins, it’s all NED weekend rules apply.

Ed Hughes, of Lowell, MA has been in the Masters competition for six consecutive years, advancing to the ﬁnal round once. Ed has more round wins at NED than any other MC drag racer at the track, but has yet to notch a victory in Masters competition.

Ed Hughes has more championships than any motorcycle racer at NED. He’s been in the Masters all six years it’s been raced. He made it to the finals once. Once. John Civitarese has been in the Masters all six years; he’s been to the finales once as well. One time. Sammy Hurwitz has raced it all six years and in year #2, he did the deed and his name is forever on the trophy. Only Sam & Joe Ferraro have name tags to accompany Scottie Levasseur’s dominance. There is no telling who will do the deed in 2019, but know this: there are 48 names plates on the Master’s trophy. When they are all filled up, someone will need to make the next three tiers to the Masters base and keep it going. The man who built it and instituted the event wouldn’t want it any other way. Keep it going.

ANTIQUE FIRE APPARATUS & EQUIPMENT SHOW The Rhode Island Antique Fire Apparatus Society has scheduled its 14th Annual Antique Fire Apparatus and Equipment Show to take place on Sunday, September 9, 2018. Show hours are 10:00am â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 3:00pm at Johnston Memorial Park, 1583 Hartford Ave, Johnston, Rhode Island. Admission to the show is FREE, however we will be collecting new, unwrapped toys which will be distributed to needy children during the holidays. The show will consist of a display of antique motorized fire apparatus and other fire memorabilia. Smokey Bear and Sparky the Fire Dog are also scheduled to make an appearance. Joe Vingi of Pleasure Sounds Unlimited will be providing musical entertainment, and Mike Higgins will carve two wooden sculptures to be raffled. The first will be a fire memorabilia display piece and the second will be an American Eagle.

Today membership is approximately 150 members with approximately 80 antique fire trucks. CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY MONTH JIM WEICHERDING

Then again, not everybody is in charge of a Giant Kids Friendly Dinosaur That can be taken to events and venues anywhere we are asked to appear. Child Passenger Safety is so very important in this day and age with people busy driving everywhere to go from point A to point B and they tend to do that in a hurry and not very cautiously anymore. Plus, distracted driving is everywhere and incredibly dangerous to not only kids but to everyone on the roadways, streets and highways across America.

September is National Child Passenger Safety Month and this year our focus week runs from September 23rd thru the 29th, with Saturday, September 29th, being National Car Seat Check Up! Day across the USA. Thousands of Child Safety Advocates, Children’s Hospitals, Companies and Police Oﬃcers get together in their cities, towns and communities to help remind kids and families about the importance of wearing seatbelts and using child restraints properly in the Family Vehicle. A few years ago this very important safety topic messaging case during the month of February each year. That changed when everyone realized that the poor weather conditions during that month precluded anyone from hosting any outside car seat check ups across the USA, especially in the northern half of the country. Not a lot of families headed out to have their car seats checked in the frigid temperatures and snow on the ground. Many Bluetooth equipped car stereos have the streaming audio feature built in. We can demonstrate this for you in our store using your phone and one of the A2DP Bluetooth enabled car stereos we have on display. They are available in all brands.

A Custom Car Stereo Center

On June 1, 2018 Rhode Island went hands free when it comes to Drivers and cell phones. A new law will prohibit any driver use of hand held wireless communication devices. What is not allowed: Driver will not be able to hold a cell phone or other wireless device while operating a vehicle. The use of headphones or other accessories that cover both ears also is not allowed. What is allowed: Drivers will be able to use in-car or other hands-free systems or accessories, commonly using a wireless technology called Bluetooth. How does it work: If a police oﬃcer observes you holding a phone and talking or texting while driving, you will be pulled over and may be fined up to $100. The offense may be waived for first offenders only by showing proof of purchase of a hands-free device. Why: Distracted driving caused by use of personal electronic devices is a growing problem, leading to needless deaths and serious injuries.

Will Bluetooth work with any radio or any cell phone? The Bluetooth format for hands free phone use in your vehicle requires two things. 1. A Bluetooth equipped cell phone, which most now are. 2. A car radio with Bluetooth reception capability built-in that will pair to your cell phone. Many newer car stereos we sell today have this feature built-in and are on display in our store in every brand. For other car stereos that are “Bluetooth ready” the optional manufacturer’s Bluetooth adapter must be added. We carry some of these adapters in stock. The adapter includes a microphone. The radio display serves as the cell phone screen, showing phone number, caller i.d. info, and in some cases text messages. For factory or original equipment radios, an aftermarket Bluetooth kit can be added. These vary a lot in price and functionality. The most deluxe kits require professional installation which we can provide. These Bluetooth car kits will completely interface with your existing factory system to mute the car speakers when a call comes in and also allow you to make calls hands-free with voice commands as long as your cell phone supports these features. The visual information – text messages, caller i.d. and phone number – appear on a separate small display installed on the dash in the vehicle.

A Custom Car Stereo Center carries in-dash car stereo receivers and in-dash video/navigation decks from Alpine & Pioneer that have Bluetooth built in for both hands free cell phone use and streaming audio use i.e. getting my music from my cell phone to play on my car stereo. For original equipment radio systems, we offer Parrot brand Bluetooth systems which can be special ordered and added to your factory stereo system to give the same performance and functionality as our other systems.

Can I add Bluetooth Streaming Audio (A2DP) to my existing car stereo? Yes!

What is Bluetooth? Bluetooth is a short range wireless communications format that enables devices such as Bluetooth equipped cell phones and car stereos to talk with each other. The devices will automatically recognize each other after they have been “paired” or set up. This requires a car receiver with either Bluetooth built in or an additional Bluetooth adapter added. When you get into your vehicle, the car receiver with Bluetooth will automatically see and recognize your phone as long as it is turned on. It can still be in your pocket or purse. When a call comes in, it rings over the car stereo speakers. You answer by pressing a button on the screen or Bluetooth device. You can hear the caller through the vehicle speakers. You talk and your voice is picked up by the Bluetooth microphone. You do not need to touch your phone. The caller i.d information appears across the radio screen. You can make calls hands-free through voice recognition as long as your phone supports this feature. Just say the name and your phone will automatically dial. Any music playing will be muted so you can hear the caller through the car speakers and the caller can hear you just by your normal talking. Also, Bluetooth offers a hands free, no cables, music transfer protocal, called A2DP or Streaming Audio, that will automatically send your music to your car radio from your Smart Phone, cell phone or Mp3 player, so you can listen to your music in your car through your car speakers without connection any cables! Your phone or Mp3 player is recognized automatically when you enter the vehicle and you have the option of instructing your car radio to receive your smart phone, cell phone, or Mp3 player music as a source for you to listen to, just like deciding to play a CD or listen to a radio station. 2018 CRUISIN’ SE JIM WEICHERDING I cannot believe I am already writing an article like this about the 2018 Cruisin’ Season coming to a close. Where in the hell did this summer go? Does anybody know? If you do, could you please let me know? It might be in part because this was the worst Cruisin’ Season I can remember. It, in all honesty, sucked! 2018 will go down in New England history books as the worst ever year for classic car and truck enthusiasts and related events. Rain? Don’t even get me started about the rain-outs that seemed to happen weekend after weekend for the first half of the Cruisin’ Season. May, June and the first half of July: Washouts! If it wasn’t a million degrees in the shade, it was raining. Normally, I attend classic auto shows almost every weekend and cruise nights at least four times every week. Not this season. The saddest part about having such a terrible Cruisin’ Season was how badly it hurt all of the charitable causes that benefit from these venues helping to raise money mostly for kids and animal shelters across the region every year. This year, they all got hurt by this poor weather pattern. Too hot? Staying home. Threat of rain? Staying home. “Oh, what a shock, look it’s raining again.” Staying home. I lost count at reading all of the social network posts, text messages and emails I received week, after week, telling me not to bother coming it’s canceled due to the weather again. Anyone reading this article loves this classic car and truck hobby and lifestyle as much as I do and they lost out on time hanging out with friends and

sharing good times together for almost the entire first half of the season. On the upside, we still have quite a few more weeks until the Cruisin’ Season comes to its ultimate conclusion and we put our (Closed) signs up until next spring.

Most of the cruise night promoters, DJ’s and hosts locations I spoke with lately are holding out as long as the weather allows them to hold until they decide to wrap things up. I see most of them continuing well into the month of October. Some have decided to end their season the week of Halloween and that’s fine by me. Adds another five to six Continued Next Page

I know most of us will take advantage of these classic auto shows continuing until the end of October just because we can. A few years ago, we had an impromptu classic auto show in December with the Tri-State Cruisers Club because the weather was seasonably mild and the sun was shining with temps in the 60’s. Huge turnout. More than 300 Show Cars, Show Trucks and Motorcycles showed up thirteen days before Christmas. Yeah. Thirteen days before Christmas we hosted a classic auto show. Here. In New England! If they decided to host another classic auto show again this year in December, I’d be the first person to show up!
