the gift of a smile There’s nothing quite like the feeling of making another person smile. Whether it’s by landing a witty line or volunteering for a worthy cause, the gift of joy is two-fold. Our 2020 Brian R. Stebbins Award For Community Impact recipient Shonda Schaefer has been handing out smiles for longer than her GRACE Grapevine tenure, but throughout her time as the nonprofit’s CEO, she has enhanced its ability to help others thanks to her determination and servant leadership. Read more about her legacy in “Growing with GRACE.” As GRACE and other nonprofits prepare to bestow smiles through their respective holiday programming, which you can learn about in “’Tis The Season,” The Christmas Shoppe aspires to spread joy with style. The locally owned decoration destination, featured in “The Light Of Christmas,” ensures families can bring that magic of the season home with them, no matter how they celebrate. Because Christmas lights provide more than a pretty backdrop — just ask Candy Speakmon, showcased in “Five Minutes With…” Holiday traditions may look different from family to family — some enjoy cozying up to a classic Christmas movie in front of the fire while others revel in recreating passed-down recipes in the kitchen, like “In 500” contributor Jessica Colvin. But regardless of what your December looks like, we hope it’s filled with smiles. Happy reading!

ask An. . CANDACE CARREON SPREADS CHRISTMAS CHEER BY SELLING PERSONALIZED ORNAMENTS

ETSY SELLER

candace carreon

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED SELLING PERSONALIZED ORNAMENTS? I had been going to the Wisconsin State Fair for many years and was always buying ornaments. I have always loved collecting different ornaments. So one year I thought, ‘Why not try it?’ HOW HAS IT BEEN SELLING ON ETSY? It has been a wonderful experience thanks to my youngest daughter for introducing me and encouraging me to give Etsy a try. I love watching how the business has grown each year and having repeat customers. WHAT WAS IT LIKE MAKING THAT FIRST SALE? It was quite a shock! To be honest, I didn't have notifications set up on Etsy, so my first sale, I didn't know I had until two weeks later! I felt so bad and messaged the customer my apologies and even sent an extra ornament as an apology. HOW FAR IN ADVANCE DO YOU BUY INVENTORY? I actually buy several times throughout the year. If it’s a popular item, I want to keep it in stock. I have three companies I purchase from. My big orders for prepping for Christmas begin in April for one and June and July for the other two. WHAT DOES THE PROCESS OF PERSONALIZING AND SELLING AN ORNAMENT LOOK LIKE? My ornaments are on my website. Customers purchase off that. I receive the order. I then print everything off that is needed to fill that order from the label to the packing slip, and then I personalize the ornament chosen. Some people like the ornaments blank to personalize themselves. It makes it more personal with the giver’s handwriting. WHAT DOES YOUR TYPICAL CHRISTMAS SEASON LOOK LIKE? Every year has gotten busier! One of the companies I order from gets its new line in the beginning of January, so Christmas is just getting over, and I am heading to a show to look at next season’s ornaments. It takes a lot of planning and preparation to make things go as smoothly as possible. By July, I like to have my inventory all ordered and have my piece count complete so that I can focus on [other] areas of the business. DO YOU HAVE ORNAMENTS THAT SELL BETTER THAN OTHERS? Absolutely, my No. 1 ornament is Construction Tools and my second is the Vintage Just Married. These two have been popular for several years. I also have several that have never sold. I like variety. HAS THE PANDEMIC AFFECTED YOUR BUSINESS? The pandemic has boosted my sales. In general, people start buying in September, but I was busy all summer.

Leaving 2020 Behind

F

rom postponed movie releases to delayed TV debuts, 2020 has been filled with many screen-time disappointments. Thankfully, a few movies and TV shows survived the pandemic and gave us something to look forward to during lockdown. The year started off with a fizzle with “Dolittle,” “Sonic The Hedgehog” and “Bad Boys For Life” providing blockbuster entertainment before movie theaters shut down due to COVID-19. Since then, “Tiger King” Joe Exotic shocked us while we laughed at the memes about Carole Baskin. Netflix also released binge-worthy shows like “Cobra Kai,” “Emily In Paris” and “The Queen’s Gambit” and a few thought-provoking movies like “The Social Dilemma,” “Da 5 Bloods” and “The Trial Of The Chicago 7.” Unfortunately, that hasn’t stopped Adam Sandler from coming out with a few duds like “The Wrong Missy” and “Hubie Halloween.” Some movies opened in theaters mid-pandemic to mediocre box office numbers, including “The New Mutants,” “Bill & Ted Face The Music” and “Tenet.” But Disney+ was there to pick up the pieces with major at-home releases such as Pixar’s “Onward,” Beyonce’s “Black Is King” and LinManuel Miranda’s “Hamilton.” Still, “Artemis Fowl” was a disappointment to Eoin Colfer fans everywhere, and “Mulan’s” at-home viewing was overpriced at $30. With only a few weeks until 2021, Disney+ fans can look forward to "Soul" streaming on Christmas. And of course we have Charlie Brown’s Christmas special on Apple TV to remind us the holidays are best spent with timeless classics and the people you love.

’Tis The Season

Area Nonprofits Adapt Holiday Programming Along with restaurants, gyms and local businesses, nonprofits have felt the pandemic’s effects. In the spring, nonprofits transitioned to remote working, virtual events and drive-thru services for their clients. Now, with the pandemic continuing into the holiday season, these organizations are overcoming new challenges to still make a difference.

Pre-Pandemic Plans

Before the pandemic, most nonprofits already had a plan for their December events. Metroport Meals On Wheels’ holiday programs included a stocking tree and a holiday meal for folks in senior centers. “Everything is modified now,” MMOW executive director Mary King says. “Normally, by mid-October, we have the stocking tree set up...so that people can adopt stockings. So from mid-October until the first of December, we’ll have about 750 stockings adopted.” GRACE Grapevine was also preparing to serve around 800 families this year, but the organization is now preparing to serve at least 50% more families, GRACE’s Chief Program Officer Stacy Pacholick says. “Many nonprofits who normally have holiday programs similar to ours have either canceled those services this year due to their own circumstances or have restricted services to the point that, we believe for many families, GRACE will be the only opportunity for them to get assistance with Christmas presents for their children,” Stacy says. “Therefore, we are planning to serve more families.”

COVID-19 Modifications

Christmas Is For Children has canceled its second Southlake Holiday Homes Tour and is downsizing its Angel Program.

16 • DEC 20

“We are still going to have that traditional program available,” Christmas Is For Children's Abby Waterstreet says. “But we’re [downsizing] just because the program requires a lot of volunteer touchpoints, and getting that together is a little bit trickier this year without risking exposure.” Christmas Is For Children estimates it will serve more than 600 kids through its Angel Program and provide more than 250 kids with a selection of bulk toys. Metroport Meals On Wheels is mirroring Christmas Is For Children’s approach when it comes to its gift program. “We’re still trying to do personalized gifts, but we’re going to set up online gift registries with a couple of major distributors,” Mary says. “We will have items that the seniors have been able to select, but we’re not going to be able to get into any clothing or item that requires sizing because it’s just too complex right now.” With GRACE’s Christmas Cottage, safety is the name of the game. GRACE will be limiting the number of volunteers in the cottage, require masks and temperature checks and only two families will be scheduled every 15 minutes to promote social distancing. “Parents will be able to select toys for each of their children, games, a family gift, wrapping paper, books, tape, batteries, etc.,” Stacy says. “We truly believe in the philosophy of this self-selection process and that part of the program will look no different than in years past.”

Hope Amid Chaos These nonprofits are continuing to support the community thanks to area volunteers and donors. “So much of our ability to give depends on the generosity of the community,” Abby says. To support these nonprofits, you can visit their websites at ChristmasIsForChildren.org, MetroportMOW. org and GRACEGrapevine.org. SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

It’s Beginning To Smell A Lot Like Christmas

I

f I close my eyes and think of holiday memories, I can smell them. I know. What am I talking about: Smell them?! But scent is the closest sense linked to memory. For me, those memories involve cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger, vanilla bean, allspice, nutmeg and so much more. Christmas mornings were spent running down the stairs to look for presents that had been left for us, and there was always a lingering smell of a cinnamon pullapart baking in the oven and hot cocoa simmering on the stove. Traditions for my family always involve a specific recipe — a meal made with love and patience. These dishes are made from recipes passed down from the family members who came before us. Thanksgiving wouldn’t be the same without my great grandma’s noodles or my grandmother’s ambrosia salad. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without nana’s cinnamon pull-apart or great grandma’s cocoa in a Santa mug. Many of my most cherished memories were made in the kitchen, mixing and stirring, learning and laughing with some of my very favorite people. Lessons included mastering the perfect pie crust and boiling sugar to make a chewy caramel. That time spent in the kitchen with family and friends, learning skills and recipes, are moments I get to keep forever. I don’t only get to tell the stories of these people who I know and love. I get to share tangible

(and edible) memories by cooking or baking a recipe passed down from them. I have been taught by example that the act of cooking or baking for someone is an act of love. The entire process involves thoughtfulness and mindfulness in the creating. Putting time and love into a recipe and creating something delicious for the enjoyment of others is just as satisfying as eating. I mean, who doesn’t love getting cookies or a meal from someone you care about, just to let you know they’re thinking of you? Now that I’m a mom, I get to make new holiday memories with my own family in the kitchen. My kids love to help me bake and cook, and they love to hear the sweet stories of how I learned to make something. We are carrying on traditions, passing down old recipes and creating new memories of our own that I hope will be shared with their children and grandchildren for years to come. I am so lucky to have recipes handwritten by my mother, grandmother and even my great grandmother. When we get them out to make a certain recipe, it puts a smile on my face to know it was written with love by someone who I care so much about. I am lucky enough, in my profession, to be able to share joy and excitement with people through baking. I love knowing I am putting love and happiness into the creation of someone's special day or holiday. I am able to use knowledge passed down from generations to create memories and traditions for others!

capital campaign, renovation, two fires and a global pandemic — any of these stressful situations could be too much for one leader to manage. But thanks to her vision, support system and loyal team, GRACE Grapevine CEO Shonda Schaefer has continued to focus on moving the nonprofit forward, leaving a lasting impact along the way. Over her tenure, Shonda has dedicated herself to GRACE’s mission, to provide vital necessities to people struggling due to limited income or have undergone recent emergencies. Whether you’ve seen her present at a black-tie event or hand out food to local children, to know Shonda is to know GRACE. And her empathy and passion ensure her work has a ripple effect throughout the community at large.

FINDING GRACE

While Shonda has created a family of supporters in Northeast Tarrant County, she was born in the Midwest. After growing up in central Iowa and meeting her husband Paul at Iowa State University, the couple moved to Texas to pursue their respective careers. With an education degree in hand, Shonda quickly gravitated toward the nonprofit sector, taking a client services position with the World Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA). While working for other area 501(c)(3)s, Shonda was elected to GRACE’s Board of Directors in 2003. And when the agency’s founder retired in 2006, Shonda stepped into the role of executive director. In her first few years, Shonda says GRACE had a budget of $750,000, a fraction of its current $4.7 million budget. “Back then, we were reusing garbage bags,” Shonda says while laughing. “It does give you a little room to work on bigger issues.” GRACE has experienced astronomical growth over the past 14 years. “Under Shonda’s leadership, the value of resources dedicated to families in need has increased by 66% and is valued at over $3.6 million,” GRACE Director of Programs Stacy Pacholick says. For the past 10 years, GRACE has served between 4,000 and 5,000 individuals each fiscal year. But during its last cycle, GRACE served more than 11,000 individuals, with the dramatic increase due to COVID’s impact. These individuals benefit from a series of programming categories: client services, transitional housing, seasonal programs, a senior program, the GRACE Pantry and the GRACE Community Health Clinic. Each of those facets has seen growth thanks to Shonda. Stacy recalls the GRACE Community Clinic’s humble beginnings, taking place one night per week in the basement of a church.

“She was a step ahead of the CDC recommendations,” says Dr. Suttle. “When they came out with questionnaires and temperature checks, we were already doing that. Anything they put into effect, we were already doing that. She was on the cutting edge of staying on top of that and keeping the community safe. She has the foresight to make decisions that are going to protect the people who utilize GRACE.”

RIPPLING OUT GRACE

While Shonda’s circle believes she doesn’t sleep because she seems to be everywhere, Shonda says that’s only possible because of her team, busy at work creating a ripple effect of her stewardship. “I’m a caretaker of the caretakers,” Shonda says. Shonda sets up her team for success by providing them with resources and educational opportunities. But she also embraces their differences, which she says is the key to GRACE’s achievements. “If you have a 70-person staff made up of Shondas, that would be a disaster,” Shonda says. “I work better with people who have different looks at things. I get so much energy from our team.” That same sentiment carries over to her board. “Our board is made up of some of the most powerful people in Northeast Tarrant County. While every single opinion needs to be heard and there needs to be a discussion, when we walk out of a meeting, we are one unit,” Shonda says. “We are all on the same side of the fence.” That trust in her board ensures they trust her, even when they know how much her position entails. And they are eager to put in the long hours when they see her commitment, grace and leadership. “It’s a lot for one person, but she does it so seamlessly,” Dr. Suttle says. “She’s never without a smile, never without an encouraging word. She’s the light of GRACE in every way.” Once you see that light, it’s easy to get hooked on Shonda’s energy. “The passion she feels for GRACE, there’s a way she is able to express that where it captures you,” Melissa says. “She has a knack for engaging people and sharing her passion.” Not only does Shonda share that passion with the public but also she shares it with her team, creating knowledgeable GRACE representatives who will make their own impressions on the community. “She says everyone who works for GRACE works for the development department,” Stacy says. “Because I may be the only person a person knows who’s affiliated with GRACE, so everyone has to understand fully what we do.” Some may think that no one can be that gracious or personable organically, but those lucky enough to have her in their corner know that once you meet Shonda, you know her heart. “She’s a person you want to be friends with,” Traci says. “Who you see is who she is.” Her character and determination have been recognized through a number of awards, like Grapevine Citizen of the Year, Grapevine Chamber Member of the Year, Legacy of Women Award and the Congressional Leadership Award. Now, we are proud to add another honor to the ranks: Shonda is the recipient of Southlake Style’s 2020 Brian R. Stebbins Award For Community Impact.

Shonda ascended to the leadership of GRACE in 2006, the same year we started Southlake Style. In the 15 years we've known Shonda and been active supporters, we've watched in admiration how GRACE continues to grow to meet the needs of this fast-growing population. The many successes of GRACE are due in large part to Shonda's one-of-a-kind skill set. She manages it all with such skill, heart and devotion that it's hard to deny the impact she has had in our community. SOUTHLAKE STYLE PUBLISHER

KELLER BAKER TAKES ON ‘HOLIDAY BAKING CHAMPIONSHIP’ Legacy Cakes owner Megan Rountree is gracing TVs across the globe by competing on Food Network’s “Holiday Baking Championship.” The series started with 12 bakers on November 2, with the first episode testing the participants’ breadmaking and cake decorating skills. After finishing the episode in first place on the nice list, Megan went onto the second episode and created a spiced walnut cupcake with apple compote and American buttercream when she was tasked with embracing seasonal nuts and seeds. She did not have as much fun during the episode’s main heat when she was asked to create a holiday liquor icebox cake. But after pulling through, Megan went on to the series’ third episode where she competed in two distinct pie challenges. While she was in the bottom two, Megan’s treats were enough to earn her a spot in the Thanksgiving-themed episode. As of publication, Megan is still competing for the “Holiday Baking Championship” grand prize. During filming, Megan was seven months pregnant, but she didn’t let that slow her down. “It was a great opportunity that I really didn’t want to miss out on. I figured let’s go ahead and try our best,” Megan says. “I wanted to grab the bulls by the horns.” CARROLL ISD ATHLETICS HALL OF HONOR ANNOUNCES 2020 INDUCTEES The Carroll ISD Athletics Hall of Honor has announced the inductees for its 2020 ceremony. CARROLL CROSS COUNTY QUALIFIES FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Both Carroll Cross Country Varsity teams are heading to state, with the boys winning their third consecutive Region 1-6A championship and the girls coming in a close second on November 9. This marks the 24th consecutive year the girls team has qualified for state, and it’s the 11th straight year for the boys. “I’m really proud of our young men and women,” head coach Justin Leonard says via press release. “This course is one of the most challenging we face all year, and obviously the competition is steep when you get to the regional level. We’ll see some of these teams in a couple of weeks, as well as the best of the best from across the state. We’re excited to have the opportunity to defend our titles.” Senior Antonio Florcruz won the bronze, leading the Dragons with a time of 15:56. He was followed by senior Bennett Woolsey, who finished 12th; senior Solomon Chavez, who finished 15th; senior Bryan Fernando, who finished 26th; sophomore Logan Cantu, who finished 28th; sophomore Hunter Hill, who finished 29th; and senior Mason Alexander, who finished 31st. The girls fell to Flower Mound, with junior Kaylie Cox coming in as the top Dragon runner in the race. She finished seventh overall at 19:03. Kaylie was followed by senior Grace Williamson, senior Abigail McIlvain, junior Olivia Jones, sophomore Ava Bushaw, senior Laurel Hook and sophomore Audrey Dunn. The Dragons are now preparing for the 6A State Championship, which will be held on November 24 in Round Rock. CCAP TO BE REVISED FOR 2021 The Cultural Competence Action Plan (CCAP) will be undergoing revisions before the next superintendent comes on board, according to interim superintendent Dr. Jeremy Lyon. The CISD Board of Trustees met on November 2 to provide an update on CCAP during the president’s report at the board meeting. According to board president Michelle Moore, 92 residents applied for membership on the District Diversity Council, and seven nominees were invited to get involved with the organization. As one of the new members’ first actions, Dr. Lyon says they will identify which subcommittees they will want to work on and review all of the community input they’ve received over the past few months. Once they’ve collected feedback, they will revise the CCAP and resubmit it to the board in time for the incoming superintendent’s review in the spring. The CCAP previously proposed actions to increasing cultural awareness on CISD campuses, including providing diversity and inclusion training, establishing focus groups and generating a discrimination reporting system. “With the new members, there will be a fresh view on each item that they’ll get to give input on and be part of the discussion,” Place 2 trustee Eric Lannen says. “I think the process is going to be really useful to helping move something forward.”

CARROLL ISD PLACED ON TEXAS SCHOOL GUIDE’S PANDEMIC RANKINGS COVID-19 couldn’t stop Carroll ISD from ranking among the top schools in North Texas. For over 13 years, Texas School Guide has ranked campuses based on their academic performance. But with the pandemic affecting 2019-2020 data, the organization had to instead pull together the past three years of data and measured schools based on their past achievements, performance, growth, racial equity and college readiness. Out of the thousand schools listed, eight Carroll ISD campuses placed among the top 50 schools in North Texas. According to the rankings, Carroll Middle School ranked ninth in the middle school rankings while George Dawson Middle School ranked 14th. In the elementary rankings, Old Union Elementary School ranked sixth, Eubanks Intermediate School ranked 17th, Walnut Grove Elementary School ranked 19th, Jack D. Johnson Elementary School ranked 23rd, Don T. Durham Intermediate School ranked 29th and Rockenbaugh Elementary School ranked 46th. To read the pandemic rankings, visit TexasSchoolGuide.org. CARROLL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS VIRTUAL VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLY Although this year’s assembly looked different from previous ones, Carroll Senior High School still got to put together a moving tribute for Southlake’s veterans on Veterans Day. At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, Carroll students and administrators came together to honor their local heroes remotely through a video tribute put together by Dragon Media. After the Boy Scouts posted the colors and Dragon Choir sang the National Anthem, the Dragon Band performed the “Armed Forces Salute” while honoring 59 local veterans from five branches of the military. “Some veterans don’t get to go back to a house and a dinner set on a table waiting for them. Some veterans have their homes on the streets of the cities they’ve fought so hard to protect, because their country neglected them,” debate president Rishik Bethi says. “As citizens, we need to do a better job of recognizing and accommodating for these people that have made the biggest sacrifice to us not just on this day, but every single day.”

CARROLL SENIOR WINS GIRL SCOUT AWARD Elina Dickens has always had a passion for helping people break through barriers. That’s one of the reasons why she was recognized with the Girl Scouts’ Young Women of Distinction award in October. A Southlake Carroll senior, Elina has been involved in the community in a myriad of ways. As one of the founding members of the Mayor’s Alliance for Unity and Culture, Elina has worked for the past several years on ways to bring residents together and spread cultural awareness. A few of the ways she’s done that is by organizing a Teen Traffic Talk event earlier this fall that broke down what you need to do when you get pulled over and organizing a cleanup Southlake event in December. More recently, Elina has been recognized by the Girl Scouts for her Gold Award project, where she developed an English conversation chat program for ESL students in Keller ISD. Elina says she is one of two Girl Scouts selected for the honor out of thousands of scouts across Northeast Texas. “I screamed when I got the call,” Elina expresses. “I ran down the stairs, told my mom, and we were both just so excited. I never thought that this would happen to me. I didn’t think I was going to get it. I was just so surprised and happy.” DRAGONS RAISE MORE THAN $4,000 FROM PINK OUT GAME The Dragons raised more than $4,000 from Pink Out in October, according to totals released by Carroll ISD. During Pink Out, the Dragons dressed in pink and raised money to spread awareness on breast cancer. Not only did students and staff members donate across the district’s 11 campuses but also they passed the bucket around the Dragon Stadium during the Pink Out Game on October 30. The effort ended up being worth it as campuses donated $570 while Dragons donated $1,809 during the bucket pass. Dragon Stadium sponsor Berkeys matched the bucket donations as well, bringing the total donations to $4,188. The funds were donated to the breast cancer organization Susan G. Komen. Good job, Dragons!

HAWKINS-WELWOOD HOMES The Gold Standard

Hawkins-Welwood demonstrated the gold standard in custom home building. We walked into building our home with much apprehension after hearing horror stories from other friends. John Hawkins and his staff showed nothing but professionalism and the desire to make sure everything was just as we envisioned. My husband and I felt in the end we got exactly what we wanted in quality and price. Now eight months after moving into our home, we feel we are still a priority in anything that needs attention. We look forward to another project in the future! – Kelley P.

Professional

I have enjoyed working with John Hawkins and his entire group of professionals. I received all the help I needed in a very friendly and professional manner. They continue to meet my needs as we have moved into our new home. I really appreciate all they have done to make my move a success. – Linda S.

Meticulous And Timely

Hawkins-Welwood is absolutely one of the most meticulous and timely builders I have ever worked with. The communication between their team is superb, which allows the project to go much more smoothly — especially with construction! – Lynn D.

First-Class Service

Playstation 5 & Xbox Series X Price: $499.99 each Playstation.com Microsoft.com

70 • DEC 20

hen it comes to picking a video game console this Christmas, Sony and Microsoft are making the choice difficult with the releases of the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X. But there are a few things you should consider before purchasing. The Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X share many similarities, namely an 8K screen resolution, 16GBs of memory and a processing rate of 120 frames per second. Aside from sound and screen quality, the systems' biggest differences lie in their gaming libraries. The Playstation 5, for instance, has more exclusive titles, so you’ll need it if you want to swing around New York as Spider-Man or hunt

down Norse entities in “God of War.” Its digital edition is a more affordable, disc-free variation that lets you download games directly from the network. Plus, it's easier than ever to immerse yourself thanks to the Playstation’s VR headset. For variety, the Xbox Series X has a wider gaming library at its disposal. For one thing, the X has 35 games available at launch compared to the Playstation 5’s 26 games. Game Pass will introduce gamers to an even wider library online, and the X will also be able to play Xbox, 360 and One games, while the Playstation 5’s backwards compatibility only extends to the Playstation 4. Whether you want the Playstation 5 or the Xbox Series X, act quickly because these consoles are sure to go fast this holiday season.

Keller Mom Reflects On Being Married To ‘Mr. Christmas’

f anyone can imagine what it would be like to be Mrs. Clause, it’s Candy Speakmon. While Candy wasn’t married to Santa, her husband, Ed, was known to Keller locals as “Mr. Christmas.” A Keller city councilmember, mayor pro tem and auto worker, Ed’s love of Christmas could be seen from the streets, as his home dominated in Keller’s decorating contest year after year. It’s one of the reasons why the city named its Best in Theme award after Ed last year following his passing, ensuring his love of Christmas and people lives on.

I’VE BEEN MARRIED TO ED… since 1975. I was 22, recently divorced and had two little girls. He joined the service back in 1966 during the Vietnam War. After he finished three tours, he came to Dallas. WE ACTUALLY MET... on a blind date. I was supposed to go on a date with another man, and he asked why don’t we double-date with this guy named Ed? This was before cell phones, so we couldn’t call him to see if he found a date. When we went to his apartment, we found out Ed didn’t have one, so the three of us ended up going on the date together. I ended up liking Ed more than the other guy. ED WAS… a very unique person. He made you laugh all the time. He was a really funny guy. He fell in love with my kids immediately and treated them so well. He was a jet engine mechanic and could fix anything. He had a creative mind that came up with the most unbelievable ideas. He was just a terrific man. WHEN HE STARTED OFF DECORATING… he started very small. Originally he just had a few lights and decorations inside his apartment. When we got married and moved into a house, he started getting more elaborate with the outside lighting. Then in the early ’90s, we stumbled into a Department 56 store and saw all of these little displays of these Christmas villages. His interest grew from there, and he became a master of building displays out of styrofoam. He got so good at it that people would ask him to build miniature displays for their own homes. He ended up going to people’s houses all around the Metroplex and making their inside and outside look beautiful. They’d bring him out to Department 56 conventions, and he’d show people how to do the stuff that he does. He even decorated the inside of Keller Town Hall.

72 • DEC 20

ED USED TO HAVE A FRIEND NAMED… Bob Irzyk, who used to be the sportscaster for Dallas TV. Ed would decorate his home back in the 2000s, and one day Bob remarked that Ed was ‘Mr. Christmas.’ That’s where the ‘Mr. Christmas’ name came from. I WOULD DROP MY JAW… at Ed’s newest decorative feat almost every year. He did so many unbelievable things, and he’d do it all himself. He’d trace, cut and paint all new wood decorations to fit the theme of that year’s decorating contest. He’d make trees out of rebar steel, put reindeers on a sleigh, dress up mannequins. One time, he carved a life-sized boat out of a huge piece of styrofoam, put a Santa mannequin fishing on it, lit it up and put it in the middle of the pond behind our house. Then he floated a 14-foot lit Christmas tree with presents above the pond. Everything he did was just incredible. The ideas never stopped for him. ED WAS… the kind of person who everybody would come to if they needed help for anything. Ed never turned down helping anybody, ever. He’d pick up hitchhikers. If anyone was on the side of the road with their car, he’d stop to help them. He’d come home every day and tell me how much he loved everyone who worked with the city. Every time he went to city hall, he went around and said hello to everybody. He never missed doing that, not one time. That’s just the kind of person he was. WHEN ED DIED LAST YEAR… it was very hard, especially around Christmastime. All of the kids and grandkids went to my son’s house, and we all spent Christmas there. We were all together at his house, and we saw how he set up, built and decorated the outside and inside of his home. Ed showed him how to do that. All of our kids carry his traditions in one way or another.

or most people, Christmas comes once a year. But for the Worsham family, they live it yearround. While other families put up their Christmas trees and wrap presents in December, the Worshams are constantly preparing for the holidays, whether they’re purchasing materials in the spring or decorating houses in the winter. Christmas isn’t just a holiday — it's their livelihood. For the past 10 years, Randi and her two daughters, Becca and Jennifer, have been spreading Christmas joy in the community through The Christmas Shoppe, a seasonal business that sells Christmas decorations, ornaments, trees, snow globes, apparel and other services on Southlake Boulevard. In a year filled with much sadness and unprecedented challenges, people are ready for the holidays, and Randi looks forward to helping them celebrate. “As negative as this year has been, I think it’s given us an opportunity to bring some happiness and joy into people’s lives,” Randi says. “I think everybody is just extra ready for Christmas this year in particular.”

STARTING CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

Randi has always loved Christmas. Whether the family was in Alaska, Tennessee, New York, Minnesota or Texas, she always made a point to go all out for her girls during the festive season. “The big joke is dad came home from work one day and saw that she put up a giant Christmas tree in the laundry room,” Becca remarks. “She’d put up 13-14 trees in our house every year. She had so many people asking her to decorate their homes. She even decorated her church. She’s just always loved Christmas so much.” Becca says her mother treated Christmas like Jesus’ birthday and threw him a big party every year. Their family of five would bake cookies together, decorate the house, sing carols and attend a candle-lit service together. And of course, no Christmas was complete without paying a visit to Santa Claus. “My mother still loves the fun of Santa Claus,” Jennifer chuckles. “She’ll tell us, ‘I still believe, I don’t know what y’all are always talking about. The minute you stop believing, he stops coming.’ She’s a 60-something-year-old woman and still tells us that Santa is real.” But of all the Christmas traditions they held, decorating the tree was the most special. “My mother would give the girls a Christmas ornament every year,” Randi recalls. “That way whenever they were on their own, they pretty much had a full tree of ornaments for themselves. When they got married, they already had their whole Christmas collection.” Those traditions mean even more to Becca and Jennifer now that they’re older and have families of their own. Becca thoroughly enjoys reflecting on her own childhood while pulling out ornaments with her kids around Christmastime. “My children help me unwrap ornaments every year, and they know which ones are mommy’s favorites,” Becca smiles. “It’s fun to go back and look at those ornaments. It’s nice to see what was important to us when we SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

*

were younger and share those experiences with our own children.” For Randi, those holiday memories of being together are worth more than any decoration, ornament or present. “Christmas is a time for family — a time to reflect on what Christmas really means,” Randi says. “It’s a lot of work, but I love doing that for my family. It's just a fun time to bring people together and be happy.”

OPENING THE SHOP

In 2010, Randi turned her love of Christmas into an entrepreneurial endeavor. She woke up with an epiphany in the middle of the night and felt God was telling her to open a business that reflected his name in Southlake. “She wanted to have a building in Southlake with Christ’s name on the outside of the building,” Becca recalls. “When mom passed down the business to me, she said you can do anything you want, you can change whatever you want, make any business decision you want. But the name of the business will always be The Christmas Shoppe so Christ’s name is on the outside of the building.” In the first year of business, The Christmas Shoppe was open year-round so people could get Christmas shopping done in advance. But after a slow business start, Randi decided to adjust the boutique shop to a parttime schedule where they opened on Labor Day and ran through the holidays. The revised schedule worked to their benefit as they were not only able to re-stock over the summer but also expand their inventory to decorate for the fall and Thanksgiving as well. “We sometimes call it ‘Hallow-Thanks-Mas,’” Becca chuckles. “We’ve already started decorating people’s homes. We’ve done three houses already, and it wasn’t even November. Christmas comes early for us.” As head designer, Becca makes custom wreaths, swags, DEC 20 • 79

mantle pieces and other types of in-home decor for their customers. Whenever customers are decorating their houses, trees or fireplaces, they usually seek Becca’s input. Their clientele comes from high places, with city councilmembers not just asking for her design expertise with their own homes, but with Southlake Town Hall. Becca’s keen eye for seasonal style, as well as her deep love for the holidays, are a few of the reasons why Randi trusted her enough to pass the business to her last year. “I’ve always loved Christmas as much as mom has,” Becca expresses. “We’re a great team together. She’s always there, she always goes into the homes to help me decorate. She trusts me enough to completely hand me over the reigns of her baby. It was an honor that she trusted me with something she loved so much.”

*

LIGHTING UP PEOPLE’S LIVES

With The Christmas Shoppe brightly lit with colorful ornaments, lush garlands, pristine candlesticks, Christmas angels and trees, Randi says the shop lights up people’s lives. She says they will sometimes see customers enter the shop and not buy anything. They just need an emotional boost for a hard time they may be going through. “I have several friends that come in just to feel good,” Randi says. “I have one friend that every time she comes in, she cries. It’s nice to see our customers that have been loyal for 10 years come in every year just to experience the happiness of Christmas.” Some residents need that Christmas joy more than others do. Randi mentioned the hardships some people experience during the holidays and how The Christmas Shoppe is there for them too. “Christmas is not always a happy time for everyone,” Randi expresses. “They have lost loved ones, or maybe they’re not with their family and they’re lonely. We’ve had people that have come in and are sad when they get there. But when they leave, they feel a lot better because they’ve been loved on and talked to. We’ve had a lot of people experience many tragedies, and we’ve tried to help those people as much as we can.” To Becca, The Christmas Shoppe is much more than a seasonal business — it’s a people business. “It’s about building relationships more than it is about anything else,” Becca expresses. “I think that’s why people come in. We have some people that come in, and they won’t buy a single thing. But they like the warmth, the peace and friendliness that The Christmas Shoppe brings.” With most of its customers staying put instead of traveling for the holidays, this December is on track to be the busiest season yet for The Christmas Shoppe. But the ladies are ready for it not just with their wrap-up sales, but also with socially distanced events like crafts, story times and photo sessions with Santa Claus. “The world is kind of living in fear, and I can’t live like that,” Randi says. “We’re going to still get together, be joyful, happy and not be afraid of things that God is in control of.” And with a year full of trials and tribulations, people are ready for the happiness that the holidays can bring. Randi says she looks forward to bringing the Christmas spirit into Southlake homes everywhere this December. “That’s kind of our mission at The Christmas Shoppe, to bring light into people’s lives,” Randi expresses. “The world got a little darker this year, so that just means our light has to shine a lot brighter.” 80 • DEC 20

home STYLE Decorating Your Mantel For The Holidays

W

hether you are roasting chestnuts over the open fire or waiting for Santa to come down the chimney, the Christmas season revolves around fireplaces. While those tried and true trinkets lurking in your attic may do the trick, turn up the heat with a new chic mantel display. Because nothing screams “’tis the season” like perfectly placed decorations.

CHOOSE A COLOR SCHEME Traditional holiday enthusiasts may have a bounty of red and green pieces, but those aren’t the only colors available for decorations. Modernize your mantle by selecting a sophisticated color palette. A white Christmas aesthetic provides a timeless look while ivory and peachy tones can add an unexpected vibrancy to your living room. Metallic tones give off a sense of luxury, and pink can be a great way to sprinkle in some fun. If you are taking a leap with an unconventional color scheme, keep it consistent across all your new holiday decor. Clashing can land you on the naughty list. STOCK UP If designing a whole new mantel moment feels overwhelming, start small by upgrading your family’s stockings. Cream and tan knit designs enhance the warmth of the room, while needlepointed velvet stockings add some texture distinction. To get the personalized look without an embroider, create cute gift tags sporting each family member’s name to identify which stocking your kids will dive into come Christmas morning. EMBRACE VINTAGE FINDS While a new look may inspire some new purchases, fireplaces can still look fresh with vintage decor. You can always build around the pieces that hold sentimental value, whether that includes a few family heirlooms or a collection of nutcrackers. Repurposing candlesticks and decorative jars will add new levels on a mantel, and spray painting old picture frames to match your selected color scheme allows you to showcase beloved family photos. Plus, a little DIY spirit is a great excuse to work together as a family. GO WITH GREENERY We love a good, full strand of garland, but there are a plethora of opportunities to play with greenery when decorating a mantel. Layered strands of silver dollar eucalyptus or pine make for great draping opportunities while magnolia leaves and blue spruce are known for their texture. You can step things up a notch by building a whole floral centerpiece filled with winter buds to sit atop your fireplace. Just add a few lit candles or sparkly lights, and you’ll have a posh focal point on your hands.

Encina Finds Success With Seasonal And Locally Sourced Ingredients

ulinary destinations don’t need unheard-of ingredients or stuffy aesthetics to leave an impact on the Dallas dining scene. Oak Cliff’s Encina proves that with its accessible and appetizing menu and down-to-earth setting. “We want our guests to feel like this is an extension of their home. We made a very thoughtful and intentional effort to do this by mixing warm tones and softening the color combinations to create a homey Southern charm feel with sophistication,” co-owner Corey McCombs explains. “It feels like a grownup version of what was here before.”

The New American concept opened in the former Bolsa location in October and has attracted foodies throughout the Metroplex thanks to its authentic, vibrant dishes. Chef and co-owner Matt Balke joined forces with McCombs to create a concept that pays tribute to Balke’s hometown of Uvalde, Texas. It’s there that Balke’s passion for locally sourced ingredients and protein came to life. Encina’s seasonal menu takes inspiration from Texan, Californian and Southern flavors, all while still staying focused on the quality of each component. “When developing my menus, I tend to start with one certain ingredient and create

a dish around it. We have farmers who visit with me on a regular basis and present fresh produce and product for inspiration,” Balke says. “We are focused on serving simplistic, familiar dishes that offer value and are well executed, consistent and made with quality ingredients.” That care not only applies to the dinner menu but also its bar program. Created with herbs and edible flowers from local growers, Encina’s cocktails allow freshness to do the heavy lifting. Big flavors lie in the Cactus Jack — Cazadores Reposado, Aperol, sweet peppers, dill, lime and Tajin salt — while The Flower Patch — strawberry and rosemary vodka, Grand Poppy, lemon and sparkling wine — provides a new take on bubbles. After pursuing the menu, start out with a few appetizers to set your expectations for the quality ahead. The A Bar N Beef Cheek Pastrami, served with granbury pimento cheese and sweet tea gastrique, screams Southern cooking, while the 44 Farms Beef Tartar, served with deviled egg puree, pickled celery, capers and sourdough bread, boasts refined, local luxuries. For a classic flavor combination, try The Cliff flatbread, topped with goat cheese, provolone, confit tomatoes and arugula. But for something new, order the Reuben to start, accented with pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and pickle dressing. Dynamic flavor combinations also dominate the entree menu, like the Turkey Leg Confit, served alongside Brussels leaves, roasted carrot salad and a pomegranate and black pepper gastrique. But for an elevated take on a go-to steak, treat yourself to the 44 Farms NY Strip, complete with green chile hominy grits, broccoli rabe and roasted garlic butter. For comfort food perfect for cold December days, opt for the Ricotta Gnocchi, served in a mushroom broth and complete with braised leeks, roasted mushrooms, pecan gremolata and pecorino. The Butternut Squash Grain Risotto, topped with dried salami, corn, mustard greens, sunflower seeds and goat cheese, is also sure to provide that comforting warmth the Italian staple is known for. Whether you enjoy these dishes in the dining room or on the climate-controlled patio, prepare to eat in an intimate yet spirited environment. “We hope Encina will bring back an atmosphere of comfort that was there for so long with a touch more of refinement,” Balke says. “There’s nothing better than witnessing the excitement in people’s faces when they try something new.”

Sizzlin’ Plates

Fajita Pete’s Turns Heads in Southlake We know the sound well: sizzling fajitas bustling through a restaurant, making their way to a lucky, and hopefully hungry, customer. Fajitas are a triple threat, with wonderful sights, smells and tastes to indulge in. Now those hoping to satisfy their craving can make their way to Southlake’s newest Tex-Mex destination: Fajita Pete’s. Since opening in October, Fajita Pete’s has been serving a wide selection of comfort foods, from fajitas and flautas to tacos and burritos. Best of all, the franchise delivers, ensuring you don’t even have to leave the house to get your fix. “When we moved to Southlake, I tried a lot of the restaurants around here and quite honestly, just for me personally, [they] just didn’t really match up to what Fajita Pete’s offers,” Southlake’s Fajita Pete’s owner John Gonzales says. “So when I found out that they were franchising, I jumped on the opportunity immediately.” Fajita Pete’s has something for everyone. Fans of the classic dish can indulge in chicken or beef fajitas with corn or flour tortillas, which come with a dizzying array of sides not limited to Mexican rice, refried beans, guacamole and chips and salsa. It may be traditional, but Fajita Pete’s founder and CEO Pete Mora’s favorite dish is this tried-and-true option. Vegetarians and vegans can also get their fix by ordering a veggie plate while seafood lovers can dive into the shrimp fajitas. And if you can’t decide on your protein, get a little bit of everything with the franchise’s mixed fajitas. “I thought it was a good opportunity for us to grow the brand in a way that’s representative of what we’ve done here in Houston,” Pete says about opening the Southlake location. Hungry diners who want to explore the menu should order the beef flautas, John’s favorite meal. With rice, beans, queso and guacamole, this hefty entree will ensure you don’t leave hungry. But big plates don’t have to translate to big calories. From the keto bowl — fajita chicken or beef served on top of lettuce with shredded cheese, your choice of sour cream or guacamole and tomatoes — to the delectable fajita salad — the keto bowl with tortilla strips — every member of the family can find their next favorite meal. That variety has helped Fajita Pete’s quickly become a Southlake success. “[We’ve had] just overwhelming support from the community,” John says. “I would say that the first few days of opening...it was great. And it’s still good.”
