game on!

When we were in grade school, the world of video games was just getting started. Back then, advancing screen after screen on simple games like “Defender” and “Pitfall” was our version of doom scrolling via the Atari 2600. Then Nintendo games taught us to handle more complex patterns so Little Mac could punch out bosses like Piston Honda.

Just as VR headsets are now one-upping our sad single-button joysticks, today’s teens are performing at levels far beyond the 8-bit imaginations of our youth. As we all collectively hit reset on another school year, we’re proud to share proof that the Southlake Carroll Class of 2025 is ready to make their mark atop the leaderboards.

We took this never-ending love of friendly competition and arcade nostalgia to EVO Entertainment, where the neon lights and digital displays set the perfect backdrop of old school meets the next generation as we got to know some of this year’s rising seniors.

Beyond being stellar students, the Dragons in this month’s issue all have a little something special that helps them represent another amazing class of young men and women. Artists, musicians, tech wizards and even a self-professed cowboy joined us for some fun and games prior to embarking on their final turn as Dragons.

The Class of 2025 is especially remarkable for Nicole and me as it also represents our final turn — as Dragon parents. Since kindergarten, we’ve watched and cheered as they leveled up each and every year. Now that it's finally their time to shine, my only hope is for someone to share the cheat code for college tuition.

Yours in Southlake Style

The Importance Of Early Detection

Baylor Scott & White — Grapevine Breast Center Medical Director Talks Mammogram Screenings

When should I start screening mammograms?

Women at average risk should have annual screening mammography from age 40. Women with risk factors may start earlier than age 40. These recommendations are from the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBS).

I don’t have a family history or breast symptoms, should I still get a mammogram?

Yes. Three of four new diagnoses of breast cancer are in women with no obvious risk factors or symptoms. Annual mammograms for women 40 and older help detect early and asymptomatic breast cancer, which is most treatable with higher survival rates. That’s why it’s widely recommended that women get a screening mammogram every year starting at age 40.

What’s the difference between a screening mammogram and a diagnostic mammogram?

A screening mammogram is for women seeking early cancer detection and who have no breast symptoms. A diagnostic mammogram is for women experiencing breast symptoms — a lump, breast pain, nipple discharge or skin change. A diagnostic mammogram may also be used to further evaluate an area of concern on a screening mammogram.

What is 3D mammography and how does it help me?

Also known as digital breast tomosynthesis, 3D mammography is an advanced type of mammogram. Many research studies have consistently shown that 3D mammography increases invasive breast cancer detection rates and decreases the need to call a patient back after a screening mammography. While the procedure is not much different than a traditional 2D mammogram, the camera quickly moves over the breast and takes multiple low-dose images during a 3D exam. The result is multiple images of breast tissue “slices.” Imagine a 2D mammogram like looking through a book with a lens that allows us to see through all the book pages overlapping each other. 3D mammograms enable us to flip through every page.

What if I have risk factors for breast cancer?

All women visiting our imaging center receive a risk assessment. If a woman's lifetime risk for developing breast cancer exceeds 20% based on the assessment, she is considered high risk and will receive further guidance from our specialized staff. For high-risk patients, the American College of Radiology and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommend a supplemental screening breast MRI in addition to screening mammograms starting at age 30.

“Absolutely wonderful experience building our home with Carl Dean overseeing the process. We have a home we will raise our children in and could not be happier.”

THE NEXT GENERATION OF LUXURY HOMEBUILDERS

Dean & Co. Transforms Visions Into Timeless Art

Carl Dean is in the business of building dreams. With over 20 years of experience in real estate and construction, Carl has firsthand knowledge of both sides of the market, working as both a luxury custom home builder and an award-winning investor. Together with his wife Elise and his managing partner Mathew Smith, they’re transforming resident’s homes into stunning pieces of art that anyone would be proud to live in.

Before starting his own business, Carl was a skilled tradesman who worked in every area of the house, from flooring to roofing to tiling and trim carpentry. By the time he made the move to Texas in 2014, he had flipped well over 1,000 homes throughout the nation and was aiming to work on even more. With Elise herself growing up in Southlake and graduating from Carroll ISD, she knew that area residents would respond positively to a boutique homebuilding experience catering specifically to their vision. That’s why Carl and Elise took a leap of faith together and opened Dean & Co. Custom Homes in 2021.

As the principal builder, Carl works directly with clients to design and customize their spaces to their liking. From stunning backsplashes to elegant chandeliers to personalized touches throughout, Carl understands that a home needs to work for the entire family — especially when he and Elise are busy parenting two twins of their own.

“I chose to be a custom home builder because it keeps me humble and close to home,” Carl says. “I want to be a family man with a family business that helps others while allowing me to express my artistic creativity and passion for this business.”

Completing construction on houses at Stacy Drive, High Court and Winsbury Way, one of Dean & Co.’s most notable luxury developments is Falcon Estates in Trophy Club. Conveniently located next to the Country Club, the Freedom

Dog Park and Playground and the nature center, pricing starts at $1,800,000 for homes that include features such as professional golf simulator rooms, steel safe rooms, private studies, media and game rooms and so much more. While construction is still underway, six out of eight total lots have already been sold, so interested buyers will want to explore this opportunity now before it’s too late.

Whether they’re working on a single house or an entire development, Dean & Co.’s custom homes emphasize both craftsmanship and creativity. Come and experience the Dean & Co. difference with your new dream home.

MISS SOUTHLAKE CROWNED MISS TEXAS

From Miss Dallas to Miss Southlake to Miss Texas, Annette Addo-Yobo has come a long way. Originally born in Ghana, Annette always had an affinity for pageants and officially competed for the first time just last year. Over the summer, the 26-year-old faced nearly 50 contestants in Houston, making history as the first immigrant-born winner. “I am humbled, honored and grateful to serve as your 87th Miss Texas!” Annette posted on Instagram. “I hope to continue making history with the Texas community and the Miss Texas class.” Addo-Yobo will represent Texas during the 2025 Miss America Pageant. FIRST FEMALE POLICE CHIEF SWORN IN

The Southlake Police Department has a new chief in charge. After former chief James Brandon was promoted to assistant city manager, Ashleigh Casey stepped up to become the first female police chief in the department’s history. Previously serving as Southlake’s assistant police chief, Casey brings 27 years in law enforcement with her to the role. “Chief Casey brings extensive experience and a proven track record of excellence to this role,” city manager Alison Ortowski says. “The respect she has cultivated amongst the team and community makes her exceptionally well-suited to lead the police department to new heights and navigate future challenges.”

20 GREEN JACKETS NAMED FOR 2024-2025

With the largest group in recent memory, Carroll Senior High School continues its tradition of excellence by naming 20 students to the distinguished Green Jackets for the 2024-2025 academic year. These exemplary Dragons will don the signature green blazers and represent Carroll ISD at a wide variety of schoolrelated events, including graduations, musical and theater performances, sports games and community engagements. Congratulations to John Askew, Nikki Battini, Chloe Blanchard, Kennedy Carrick, Sydney

Clouse, Grayson Davidson, John Fahoum, Kenneth Fambro, Sterling Hayes, Mayli Heistein, Owen Hindman-Anderson, Sultan Kantar, Minju Kim, Trevor Mays, Christopher Parsons, Colin Seaburn, Jolie Thompson,

Ten years ago, the ice bucket challenge swept the nation in raising awareness for ALS. This past summer, one Southlake resident brought the challenge back in honor of her father, who is currently fighting the disease. On July 15th, Ashley Burnett hosted a community ice bucket challenge at Hawaiian Falls Roanoke to raise money for her dad, Todd. Around 200 attendees came and dumped ice buckets on their heads, raised $14,585 and even met 49ers tight end Brent Jones. “I am so grateful that Hawaiian Falls jumped on board to partner with me,” Ashley says. “With a disease that is full of the unknown and often feels so hopeless, raising money through this event gives my family back a little bit of hope.”

CARROLL SENIOR STARTS HEALTH CARE NONPROFIT

One Dragon is looking to change the health care landscape in North Texas. Last year, Sahaj Satani founded Mediloquy, a nonprofit that connects high school students to internships and mentorships within the health care field. Since its inception, Mediloquy has allowed students from Marcus High and Plano East to collaborate with local health care organizations including Medical City Healthcare, Texas Oncology and Texas Health Resources. “Through Mediloquy, I have had the opportunity to provide free guidance and support to high school sophomores and juniors who are highly interested in pursuing careers in medicine,” Sahaj says. “These mentorship opportunities have allowed students to engage in meaningful medical research, further enriching their experiences.”

BOB JONES ADDED TO THE WITTE MUSEUM’S ‘BLACK COWBOYS’ EXHIBIT

Southlake’s very own Bob Jones is part of the Witte Museum’s newest exhibition called “Black Cowboys: An American Story” in San Antonio. Running through Feb. 9, 2025, the Witte’s exhibition highlights the black Americans who labored as farm hands, participated in cattle drives and even owned their own ranches from before the Civil War through the turn of the 20th century. “After learning about Bob and Almeady Jones — their leadership in the community, the growth of their ranch and the important role they played in educating Black students — we knew that the history needed to be brought to a wider audience,” says Ronald W. Davis II, Witte Museum’s Curator of American History. “The Witte created ‘Black Cowboys: An American Story’ to honor the lives and legacies of Black cowboys and cowgirls across Texas. The Jones family, rightly, is part of that story.”

LYNDA WARNER NAMED CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

This past summer, the Southlake Chamber of Commerce held its annual awards banquet, honoring 11 local individuals and businesses for their service to the community. The coveted Citizen of the Year Award went to Lynda Warner, who is well-known for her tireless fundraising efforts and volunteer work with organizations like the Rotary Club of Southlake, Kids Matter International and GRACE. The Legacy Award was presented to the Grubbs Family of Dealerships, Funmi Akintade won both the President’s Award and Ambassador of the Year and former Southlake mayor John Huffman was recognized with the Chairman’s Award. Lisa Harrington was honored with Director of the Year, Volunteer of the Year went to Victoria Meagher and Youth of the Year went to Carroll senior and Green Jacket Max Keating. Dragons Care took home Civic Group of the Year, the Westin Southlake won Corporate Business of the Year and Ronkot Design LLC was honored as Small Business of the Year.

SOUTHLAKE SISTER CITIES TRAVEL TRAVELS TO JAPAN

Six students put their passports to use during a summer trip to Japan. Back in June, deputy director of public works Lauren LaNeave took six children from Southlake Sister Cities to Tome to live with host families and learn about Japanese culture. Not only did the group get to visit Tokyo, but they also got to check out the TeamLab Planets museum and the Tokyo Skytree, which is the tallest tower in the world at 2,080 feet. “I learned the importance of embracing cultural diversity and cherishing the moments of stillness in a fast-paced world,” member Braxton says. “I am grateful for this experience offered through Southlake Sister Cities.”

BOBBY WITT JR. RETURNS HOME AN ALL-STAR

Since making his major league debut two years ago, Bobby Witt Jr. has been taking the MLB by storm. Witt Jr. is the son of former Texas Rangers pitcher Bobby Witt, who won a World Series with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001. Witt Jr. was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 2019 as the second pick in the first round. Like his father, his strong arm serves him well as the Royals’ shortstop, and at the plate, he’s currently batting .324 — coming in second place in all of baseball. Bobby made his team and his hometown proud when he made his first All-Star appearance at Globe Life Stadium on July 16.

SOUTHLAKE RANKED 13TH WEALTHIEST SUBURB

Two DFW suburbs recently made the Top 15 on a list of the Top 50 wealthiest suburbs in the nation. According to GOBankingRates, the study evaluated cities and towns with at least 5,000 households, comparing average household income and average home values. With its top schools and roomy mansions, Southlake came in at No. 13 with an average household income of $360,078 and an average home value of $1.2 million. Also making the list is DFW’s University Park, which placed at No. 6 with an average household income of $381,235 and an average home valued at a staggering $2.3 million.

DISTRICT REVIEWING SUPERINTENDENT APPLICATIONS

As of press time, Carroll ISD is one step closer to having a new superintendent. After Dr. Lane Ledbetter announced his retirement earlier this year, the district began the hiring process for his replacement. Over the summer, board president Cam Bryan confirmed the district received 25 applications for the position. Interviews were held in July, and the district is working to make an offer before the start of the school year this month.

TALKING ANIMALS BOOKS HOSTS WHERE’S WALDO?

Everyone is always asking “Where’s Waldo?”, but last month, locals had a definitive answer in Grapevine. For the month of July, Talking Animals Books teamed up with the American Booksellers Association to host a “Where’s Waldo?”-themed scavenger hunt in celebration of the beloved children’s icon that has sold more than 80 million books throughout the years. Families joined in on the fun by picking up a stamp card and looking for Waldo in 20 local businesses to win fun prizes and giveaways. “It’s a great way to bring the community together,” co-owner Katy Lemieux says. “We love how Grapevine is such a collective of creative and fun small businesses.”

JUDY

PIE IN GRAPEVINE NAMED ONE OF THE TOP 10

PIE SHOPS IN THE U.S.

If you've had the pleasure of savoring a slice of pie at JudyPie in Grapevine, then you know they consider baking an art form. Since 2016, Judy Balunda has been serving her community hearty slices and whole pies in countless flavors. Now the community is returning the favor by securing enough votes to place her at the No. 5 spot on USA Today’s list of the 10 Best Pie Shops In The Nation. Whether you come for Apple Crumb, Key Lime or Rhoda’s Pecan Pie, every slice takes the cake.

JOCELYN HOPE GIVEN DREAM LEADERSHIP AWARD

Five business leaders recently received the coveted DREAM Leadership Award, and Southlake’s Jocelyn Hope was one of them. A State Farm insurance agent, Jocelyn has served on several nonprofit boards and focused on several community initiatives such as education, mental wellness and animal welfare. For her emphasis on community service and empowerment, Jocelyn was given the DREAM Leadership Award at the 2024 Women’s Leadership Conference in late July.

NEW CREPERIE OPENING IN TOWN SQUARE

Southlake Town Square is about to get a lot sweeter. Over the summer, Rockfish Seafood Grill shut its doors after 25 years of service. Now, the Houstonbased Sweet Paris Crêperie & Café is set to open in its place later this year. Known for its sweet and savory crepes, waffles, salads and hot drinks, Sweet Paris is reminiscent of a Parisian bistro and is the first of five DFW locations planned for the future. “Sweet Paris Crêperie & Café is truly a one-of-a-kind brand that our entire family feels connected to," franchisee Edward Hymes Sr. says. "We are committed to bringing a truly excellent and fresh dining experience to the community and could not think of a better place than Southlake for the first of several locations we plan to open."

14 LOCAL RESTAURANTS PARTICIPATING IN DFW RESTAURANT WEEK

North Texas’ largest annual culinary event returns to support a great cause this month. Currently in its 28th year, DFW Restaurant Week will feature 39 of Tarrant County’s finest restaurants, including Southlake’s Del Frisco’s Grille, Jellico’s, Kirby’s Prime Steakhouse, Moxies and The Henley Kitchen & Bar. Grapevine’s Bacchus Kitchen + Bar, Ferrari’s Italian Villa & Chop House, Mac’s On Main, Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille and Teatro Bistro & Cocktail Lounge will also be offering specials, as well as Keller’s Chophouse. Finally, Colleyville rounds out the local selections with Black Walnut Cafe and Next Bistro. DFW Restaurant Week will take place Aug. 5-11 and will benefit the Fort Worth-based children and family nonprofit Lena Pope.

Southlake Carroll always has senior stars on the rise, and the class of 2025 is no exception.

Between art, music, robotics, Student Council and even rodeo, these young leaders demonstrate that nothing is impossible when you follow your passions.

Before taking the world by storm, we let these soon-to-be graduates be kids for one more day as they let loose during an afternoon arcade session at EVO Entertainment. Life may not be a game, but it’s safe to say these Dragon all-stars are winning it.

JOHN ASKEW THE COWBOY

If Southlake Carroll has a cowboy, it’s John Askew. When he’s at school, John ropes himself into several student organizations, including Student Council, the Young Men’s Service League and the National Honor Society. This 2024 Green Jacket even occasionally hypes up pep rallies as the unofficial emcee.

But when the school bell rings, John is out on the field, working on three separate farms as a ranch hand. John’s appreciation for livestock and country life extends to extracurricular activities as well, especially when he’s wrangling animals 10 times his size for the Carroll Rodeo Team.

“You’re on a 1,500-pound animal that has a mind of its own while trying to rope a 1,000-pound animal that has a mind of its own,” John says. “There’s so many moving parts to keep track of that it’s really hard to just jump on and go.”

After graduating, this rodeo star would like to study agriculture at Texas A&M University and combine his love for both land and people into his own real estate company.

“Everything I’ve done at Carroll has been with the motivation of reaching as many people as I can,” John says. “I feel like there’s not enough joy and hopefulness nowadays. I’m just doing the best I can to put a smile on somebody else’s face.”

MATTEO LONGARINI THE JAZZ PIANIST

“I’ve always felt there’s something inside of me that’s inherently musical,” Matteo Longarini says. “Music is a universal form of communication. You hear it, and you immediately feel what the musician is expressing.”

Classically trained in piano since the age of 4, Matteo thrived in private Montessori-style schools before transferring to Carroll ISD in 2017. Wasting little time becoming a member of the Dragon Jazz Band, Matteo thrives in its competitive atmosphere. So much so, he even started the Carroll Jazz Championship on campus and won the very first one with his combo.

When he isn’t playing for Carroll, Matteo is performing gigs for local community gatherings, charity events and even graduation parties. The virtuoso is especially excited to audition for this year’s Essentially Ellington festival, a high school jazz competition that only accepts the top 30 performing programs across the country.

Upon graduating, Matteo hopes to pursue a career in international relations. But wherever this talented maestro goes, he’ll take his love of the piano with him as a double major in music.

“It’s my therapy,” Matteo says. “I can just sit down and play my feelings through my fingers into the piano keys.”

AVA GILBERT THE SINGER

Anyone who attends Sunday morning church service at White’s Chapel might mistake Ava Gilbert for an angel, mostly because she has the voice of one.

“I’ve been singing ever since I could talk,” Ava remarks. “My family is very musical, and we would always do little talent shows at family gatherings. Everyone either sang or played an instrument. That’s what I was surrounded by from a very young age.”

Part of Southlake Carroll’s Show Choir, Ava’s voice stands out anywhere — especially at UIL contests, placing in both the region and area choirs throughout her career. As a junior, the rising star narrowly missed qualifying for state by just a couple of chairs, which she hopes to rectify during her spring audition.

When on vocal rest, Ava stays busy mentoring the children’s choir. And even though she’s no longer on Carroll’s roster, Ava utilizes her tennis expertise to coach young players at the Southlake Tennis Center. After graduation, Ava aims to go to Texas Christian University and combine both of her loves as a future music educator.

“I just want to be involved in as many things as I can be and really put myself out there,” Ava says. “I want to make as many memories as possible and take in all of my last year of high school.”

LUCY DUGGER THE DIGITAL ARTIST

For as long as she could remember, Lucy Dugger enjoyed experimenting with different oils and acrylic paints. But upon entering high school, the aspiring artist found a true niche in digital art.

“If you really want to emphasize bright colors and high contrast, the best way to do that is digitally,” Lucy says. “Plus, you don’t have to buy paints, and it’s a lot less messy.”

Lucy’s transition from a traditional canvas to a touchscreen paid off in big ways. Last spring, her painting, “Boy With Jukebox,” received top marks at the regional Visual Art Scholastic Event before qualifying for the state showcase.

“It was a digital painting of a photo I took of my little brother observing a jukebox five years ago,” she says. “I wanted to exhibit the childlike wonder he had when looking at it, so I used dark lighting and contrasted that with a bright jukebox illuminating his face and lighting up his world.”

Encouraged and inspired by her recent state success, the budding artist plans to continue honing in on graphic design in college.

“I like how I can express myself through my art,” Lucy says. “It makes me focus more on what I want to do and how I want to incorporate it into my future.”

Re-Nylon Backpack

Price: $2,200

he Vela backpack was first launched by Miuccia Prada in 1984. Instead of leather or other luxury fabrics, it was made from water-resistant nylon that immediately turned heads and the fashion world upside down.

Forty years later, not much has changed — the bag is still water-resistant, but its tell-tale pocone fabric once made for military tents has been updated in a style that is much more sustainable. Since 2019, the triangular logo of the famed Italian fashion house has rested upon Re-Nylon — a fabric made from plastic material harvested from the ocean that is then purified and recycled.

Early fans of the Re-Nylon look and minimalist designs included Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Dua

Lipa. This particular bag may be simple, but with two symmetrical front pockets, it is also more than functional. For those on the go, the top can be closed with a quick pull of the drawstring closure and further secured with the logo adorned top flap. Inside, the bag has two more pockets, including one with a zipper closure, perfect for essential items.

Award-Winning Southlake Set Designer Returns Home For New Show

When the curtains open and the lights dim, an audience’s attention is always focused on the stars of the show. Equally important are the sets those artists are performing on, sets that Carroll Dragon ’07 alumnus Paige Hathaway has nearly two decades of experience designing. Holding a Master of Fine Arts from The University of Maryland, Paige’s award-winning set designs have graced productions from “Matilda” and “Cinderella” to “Mary Poppins” and “Little Shop of Horrors.” Now with her newest show, “The Amazing, Fabulous, and Spectacular Untruths of Juan Garcia,” playing at Fort Worth’s Amphibian Stage this fall, Paige is excited to come home to the city that helped set the stage for her successful career.

WHEN I WAS AT SOUTHLAKE CARROLL…

I did a lot of theater and art, working backstage on several Carroll Theatre productions. During my junior year, my teachers introduced me to set design, and it was the perfect combination of all of my passions and loves. Between art, architecture, interior design, sculpture, storytelling and collaborating, it really prepared me and got my foot in the door for that industry.

I WOULD HAVE NEVER… known about this career path had it not been for my teachers at Southlake Carroll. Having an outlet and ability to explore that in my high school years was so formative and important. If the Carroll Theatre program hadn’t been there, there’s no way I would be where I am today.

THE FIRST SHOW I DESIGNED… was a musical called ‘The Pajama Game’ in my senior year, which is set in a 1950s pajama factory. I ended up winning Best Scenic Design at the Betty Lynn Buckley Awards, which are like the high school equivalent of the Tony Awards, and I haven’t looked back since.

I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED… art, painting and drawing, but I was always really intimidated by the blank canvas. Being told to go sit in a room and create something by myself was terrifying. But in theater, you’re always given a script to refer to, as well as a director and other designers who you can collaborate with and bounce ideas off of.

ONE GREAT THING ABOUT SET DESIGN IS… that you get to play in many different playgrounds. I enjoy being able to do realistic interiors, but I also enjoy working on big open stages and exploring really elaborate backdrops. I get to research 1950s English flats for

mystery thrillers like Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Dial M For Murder,’ but then I get to build magical Norwegian ice palaces for Disney’s “Frozen.” I get to work with many different styles, which has always satisfied my curiosity about the world and the people who live in it.

WE’LL ALWAYS ASSEMBLE EVERYTHING… for technical rehearsals two to two-and-a-half weeks before opening. This is when we combine actors with sets, costumes, lighting and sound and go through the entire show from top to bottom. When I sit in tech, I take notes on what we need to address and communicate with the team to make it happen.

THERE ARE MANY ELEMENTS… to keep track of when it comes to set design. People don’t quite realize how many months or years of work go into it. I do these really extensive drawings and always have to be technically minded regarding materials and function, weight and placement. You also have to work within the budget you’re given and find ways of working with the resources you have. It isn’t just about sketches — there’s this enormous section of my process that’s about communicating my designs to the people who build them.

WHAT KEEPS ME COMING BACK… are the people — the relationships I formed with my colleagues and the audience. We built this story together and created this thing that’s so beautiful and powerful, and people always walk away having some sense of catharsis and fulfillment. I’ll sometimes walk around during an intermission, and I’ll hear someone make a comment about the set that I wasn’t expecting. It’s moments like these where we connect with people and allow them to feel things and be excited that I find deeply rewarding.

WHAT IS YOUR HEALTH CARE SPECIALTY?

I specialize in minimally invasive spine surgery. Utilizing these advanced techniques has been the main focus of my 27-year career as a neurosurgeon.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB?

The most rewarding aspect of my career is taking a patient to surgery who is experiencing agonizing pain and having them walk out 60 minutes later with their pain resolved. Our model of care has greatly decreased the number of patients who require surgery while achieving excellent outcomes and patient satisfaction.

treat every patient as if they are our own family.”

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO PURSUE HEALTH CARE?

When I was 5 years old, I saw my grandfather suffer from his first heart attack. The profound emotional impact the health scare had on my family ignited my determination to assist others and let me pursue a career in medicine.

WHAT SETS YOUR PRACTICE APART FROM OTHERS IN THE AREA?

We focus on conservative treatments for our patients. For those requiring surgical intervention, we employ minimally invasive techniques that decrease recovery time and swiftly restore patients back to their normal lives.

“Our practice stands out as a true model of excellence based on nonsurgical care with 20 years of experience.”

WHAT MAKES CLIENTS WANT TO COME BACK TO YOU?

I think patients can sense our integrity that we really want what’s best for them at the lowest possible long-term cost and that we don’t focus on profit first.

WHAT IS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

The best way to grow your medical practice is to treat people like your own family and they will come back and refer their friends and family. It’s not only the smart business decision — it’s also the right moral decision.

Ryan Reeves, M.D.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR FIELD?

I draw inspiration from both colleagues whom I admire and from my patients daily. Their resilience and strength motivate me to continually strive for excellence in my practice.

WHAT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN YOUR INDUSTRY?

One misconception is that more tests and procedures always equate to better care. In reality, personalized care that focuses on the individual needs of each patient, supported by evidencebased practices, often yields better outcomes.

“We're proud to celebrate 25 years in the community.“

Angela Bowers, M.D.

WHAT IS YOUR HEALTH CARE PASSION, AND HOW DID YOU COME TO REALIZE IT?

I am passionate about helping others with their skin diseases. Having skin issues can be very debilitating, leading to lower self-esteem.

HOW DOES YOUR PRACTICE GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY?

We see patients for free who come from GRACE and The Gatehouse and supply them with extra skin care products. The practice also donates to a large number of philanthropic organizations throughout the community.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB?

The most rewarding part of my work is the relationships I have built with my patients and staff. I am now at a stage in practice where I am seeing my past acne teenagers come in with their own kids.

ARE THERE ANY NEW PROCEDURES OR TECHNOLOGIES THAT YOU OFFER?

We have the new innovative Potenza machine utilizing radiofrequency microneedling to firm and tighten the skin. The Emsella and Emsculpt machines also increase muscle density, which is great for the pelvic floor and our core strength.

“The most rewarding part of my job is when I see how life-changing giving someone back their smile can be.”

WHAT IS YOUR HEALTH CARE PASSION, AND HOW DID YOU COME TO REALIZE IT?

One very important focus in my practice is treating sleep apnea using a dental device. I first became interested in this specialty when my father had a stroke, and I realized that his untreated sleep apnea was a factor and possibly the cause of that event.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY?

I chose general dentistry because it allows me to have my hand in all aspects of dentistry. I enjoy cosmetic dentistry and giving people new smiles and newfound confidence!

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO PURSUE HEALTH CARE?

I chose to become a dentist because to me, it is the perfect combination of art and science. I help people maintain their dental health and stay pain-free, as well as give them the beautiful smiles they always dreamed of.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR FIELD?

I am inspired to help my patients feel confident and happy. A winning smile makes such a difference in how you look and feel. Helping people smile confidently is so fulfilling to me.

“Our practice stands out due to our personalized approach to patient care.”

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE RECOGNIZED BY YOUR PEERS AS A TOP DOC?

Being recognized as a Top Doc by my peers in North Texas is an incredible honor. It affirms that my dedication to patient care and surgical excellence is acknowledged and valued by fellow professionals.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR FIELD?

The most inspiring aspect of my field is witnessing the positive transformations in my patients. Seeing their confidence and self-esteem soar after a successful procedure is incredibly rewarding.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PARTICULAR SPECIALTY?

I underwent extensive jaw surgery for fractures during my bull-riding days in college. I met an amazing surgeon whose expertise and medical care was matched only by his compassion for his patients. He was instrumental in my desire to pursue a career in plastic surgery.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRACTICE STAND OUT?

In the 20-plus years that I’ve been practicing, I’ve been honored by patients voting our practice as a favorite nearly every year. I am convinced this is due to our amazing team of dedicated support staff and experienced providers at Southlake Plastic Surgery and Med Spa.

Harvard Medical School graduate Dr. Sacha Obaid founded North Texas Plastic Surgery with a small boutique office in Southlake 17 years ago. His focus from the start has been on providing exceptional breast and body contouring results in a state-of-the-art environment. His passion and attention to detail has grown North Texas Plastic Surgery to five locations across the metroplex, four attending plastic surgeons, a dedicated anesthesia group, five medical spas and a flagship surgical center in Southlake with six fully accredited operating rooms. Last year, North Texas Plastic Surgery placed over 2,000 breast implants and sculpted the waists of hundreds of women in Southlake through their unique mommy makeover, making them an easy choice for plastic surgery.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Casey Anderson specializes in natural-looking results. His patients rave about his attention to detail, his eye for proportions and ratios and his drive to get every patient looking fantastic. His tummy tucks feature not only great curves but also some of the best-looking belly buttons around.

“I love North Texas Plastic Surgery! I’ve done several procedures and I’m super happy with the results.”
— Daniel M.

Aesthetic fellowship-trained plastic surgeon Dr. Jeremy Bosworth is a father of two with a passion for fitness. This passion has led him to dedicate his body contouring skills to delivering slender athletic waists.

Aesthetic fellowship-trained plastic surgeon Dr. Jacob Carlson has dedicated his practice to breast augmentations, breast lifts and breast reductions. Whether your goal is for no one to know that you have had a procedure or for everyone to know, Dr. Carlson can make it happen.

Fantastic surgical results and experiences are dependent not only on the surgeon but also on the anesthesia, and that’s where Dr. Maulik Parikh comes in. As a board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Parikh knows the operations, the patients and the recovery and ensures that everything runs smoothly.

For those not ready for surgery, North Texas Plastic Surgery has an industry-leading medical spa featuring injectables such as Botox, Juvederm and Restylane, laser treatments such as Sciton’s BBL, Halo, Coolsculpting and Morpheus 8, and surgical recovery aids such as the Balancer Pro.

From within this elegant eatery, a new intimate upscale dining room has emerged with an elevated menu and plush decor that’s well worth the wait.

Based within the cultural district, The Crescent Hotel is conveniently located next to some of Fort Worth’s top destinations, including the Kimbell Art Museum, Dickies Arena and the Modern Art Museum. But Emilia’s Blue Room

is a destination in and of itself, with blue velvet hues, brass tints and custom chandeliers throughout exuding elegance and refinement in a lavish tablecloth setting. The vibrant and opulent space seats up to 50 patrons at a time, accommodating multiple parties while still maintaining its intimate ambiance.

Upon being seated, guests will be greeted by certified sommelier Joel Teddlie, who worked at various Californian bistros prior to joining the Crescent Hotel. After getting to know diners’ preferences, Joel can recommend a reserve wine, a vintage champagne or a freshly shaken olive and herb martini and pour it tableside.

After a few sips, it’s time to peruse the menu expertly curated by executive chef and Dallas native Preston Paine. Prior to joining the Blue Room, chef Paine completed his culinary training in Italy and gained notoriety in the kitchens of such standouts as Paradiso, Tejas, Mermaid Botanist and Casablanca in the Bishop Arts District. You may also recognize him from his runner-up finish on the Food Network’s newest cooking competition show, “Ciao House.”

“We designed menus at the Blue Room to offer something special at every course,” chef Paine says. “Each dish is opulent and polished and prepared using low-intervention methods to preserve the natural flavors of the product.”

Every dinner service begins with a variety of hand-crafted hors d'oeuvres that come straight from the sea, including traditional oysters and a premier caviar service with blue corn blinis and creme fraiche. If you want a true showstopper, try the shellfish tower for two, which comes with a combination of lobster, shrimp and snow crab claws. The Wagyu beef tartare compliments the sea-faring menu, nicely served with a side of shallots, capers and grilled sourdough.

When it’s time for the main course, The Blue Room has several extravagant meats and pastas to indulge the senses. The Dover sole and roasted rack of lamb are freshly carved tableside, while the seared scallops are served over a delicate bed of celery root puree and smoked trout roe. The Wagyu Denver steak comes with a crispy potato pavet on the side, while the venison filet is paired with salsify root and creamed kale. Pasta lovers will want to savor the Wagyu bolognese fettuccine with fresh pecorino shavings, and the whole lobster fra diavolo comes with a spicy kick thanks to a hearty helping of Calabrian chili. Guests may choose to add uni, caviar and black truffles for further enhancements to their meal.

Elaborate presentations extend beyond entrees and to the dessert menu as well. The flourless chocolate cake is as fluffy as it is decadent, while the cappuccino cake has layers of creamy mousse that will put a pep into anyone’s step. A variety of sweet sorbets and gelatos are available to anyone craving a simpler option, and the tangy lemon meringue tart is a fan favorite that will have anybody falling in love.

“We have created a truly special offering that we are confident will be sought after by locals and epicureans from across the country,” chef Paine says. “I look forward to bringing the bright and sunny flavors of coastal Italy to Fort Worth.”

Rock & Brews Takes Center Stage In Grapevine

Gene Simmons and Paul Stanely of KISS may not have dropped an album since 2012, but the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame frontmen continue to keep busy. Nowadays, the “Detroit Rock City” bandmates hit the road to tour grand openings of their rockinspired restaurant group, with its latest stop in Grapevine this fall.

With more than 20 locations nationwide, you could say Rock & Brews has been a hit since the first restaurant opened in El Segundo, California in 2012. On June 28, its newest location in Grapevine held a charity night to help get ready for its grand opening and support the Grapevine Relief and Community Exchange (GRACE) in the process.

“From the moment we decided to bring Rock & Brews to Grapevine, we wanted to be front and center and engrain ourselves in the local community,” CFO Corey Hingson says. “Anyone who comes to Rock & Brews will find something that they like.”

Just like its founders, Rock & Brews specializes in American classics. However, their latest arrangements are more family-friendly bar food than fire-breathing concert. Rock & Brews suggests you open the show with appetizers like Sargent Peppers Jalapeno Poppers, crispy calamari or some barbecue nachos.

Move on to eat like a rockstar from a set list with a little bit of everything from specialty burgers, pizzas and salads to salmon, chicken and steaks. Those looking to spice things up should try Alice Cooper’s Poison Burger made with pepper cheese spread, fried jalapenos and onions and topped with his namesake hot sauce.

The lively atmosphere blends nicely with a lengthy cocktail menu and an even longer list of 48 tap beers that make the restaurant a great place to gather with friends and family.

People may come for the food, but they stay a little longer to “Rock and Roll All Nite” with live mu sic sets from local artists on the rise, tribute bands and the occasional concert replay like Elton John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour. Classic music and classic American fare served stageside or on the patio will have you feeling like a rockstar.

Southlake Cakery Molds A Joyful Tradition

Nothing Bundt Cakes first opened its doors in Southlake in 2007, 10 years after its founders developed the franchise from their Las Vegas kitchens. Whether it was the delicious flavors or the many sizes perfect for any occasion, it didn’t take long for the indulgent sweets to become a Southlake staple.

Thanks to the generosity of its original owner, the Southlake Town Square shop quickly cornered the market on portioning off positivity. Bundlets in flavors like Chocolate Chocolate Chip and Lemon could be found at just about every charitable event and school fundraiser’s table setting, silent auction and goodie bag.

Sampling across the city’s most active givers turned out to be the right move as the Southlake shop built a reputation for sales and promotions amongst the organization’s 500-plus locations across the country.

The cycle of giving continues to this day as their mouth-watering flavors are a currency of our community and a surefire way to brighten the day of friends, employees and teachers alike. The individually-sized Bundtlets are the perfect way to treat that special someone, while a tray of bite-sized Bundtinis helps share the love amongst a team that deserves recognition.

Of course, the larger bundt cakes bring a little something extra to birthday celebrations. But no matter the size, featured flavors like red velvet and white chocolate raspberry are always worth the trip up Carroll Avenue. The former boasts a rich and smooth scarlet batter made with a hint of cocoa, while the latter is an indulgent blend of tart berries and sweet white chocolate.

Even the cakery’s most loyal followers are kept on their toes with new seasonally inspired pop-up flavors. This year’s Taste of Summer Collection boasts a series of two-week limited edition flavors like Pineapple Upside Down and Lemon Raspberry cake, plus a new secret flavor to be unveiled on Aug. 19th.

The series of summer flavors will end this month with a yet to be determined surprise, but the joy of our tasty tradition will continue.
