new quarterback, same cadence I carried a whistle as a youth coach for many years — some of the best moments of my life. I’m sure any of my players and their parents would tell you how often I extolled the virtues of keeping one’s head up. Point guards and quarterbacks are only as good as their ability to see the game in front of them. They may dribble like Steph or have an arm like Rodgers, but if they can’t or won’t keep their eyes downfield, opportunities will be missed. Quinn Ewers has the arm and his eyes downfield. That is why he was able to graduate early and take full advantage of his athletic and business opportunities under new NIL rules. As one of the preeminent coaches in the country, Riley Dodge has to keep his eyes downfield too. In this case, he’s always on the lookout to groom the heir apparent in a long line of successful quarterbacks at Southlake Carroll. When Ewers left for Ohio State just three weeks before the start of the season, there was little surprise in the halls of Dragon athletics as to who was next in line. The starting quarterback would be new, but the cadence was the same as the Dragons defeated Highland Park 45-21 on national television. It was impressive to watch Kaden Anderson account for four touchdowns in just three quarters of work in his varsity starting debut. The fact that Kaden has already earned his team’s respect as a captain and has emerged in a leadership role so quickly should not be overlooked. Neither should the other state championship-caliber players featured in our 16th Fall edition of Dragon Pride.

F

or over five years, Orangetheory Fitness Southlake has been providing total-body, high-intensity interval training to members looking to make a change in their lives. Today, Orangetheory continues to help people train and improve themselves every day. Utilizing three main areas, including a strength training, cardio and rowing section, Orangetheory alternates between several different workouts to boost your metabolism, burn fat and eliminate calories. Members like Paul Spiegelman have been coming to Orangetheory for several years, and he appreciates the support and instruction that its trainers provide. “It’s the variety, the change in the workout that makes every class different,” Paul says. “The workout is more than I would ever do myself. It pushes me further than if I were working out on my own.” Other members like Val Patel notice how the quality of instruction helps her improve her athletic performance every time she comes in. “When I started, I was walking at three-and-a-half

miles per hour,” Val says. “Now I can run a 23-minute block. I was never able to do that in the past.” Orangetheory also hosts special events like the transformation challenge to push members at least three days per week for an eight-week period. Elizabeth Hopwood tried the transformation challenge herself when she joined Orangetheory five years ago, and since then she’s lost over 40 pounds. “After my second baby, I decided I needed to do a little bit more to get that baby weight off,” Elizabeth says. Now I feel more confident and capable. When I’m not at Orangetheory, I can go to a regular gym with the knowledge I’ve learned here and incorporate it there. Orangetheory motivates me to push even harder and has sparked my dedication to physical fitness like never before.” So whether you’re looking to build muscle, lose weight or maintain your current shape, Orangetheory can help you realize your health and wellness goals. Come and experience the difference that Orangetheory can make in your life.

“I’ve really enjoyed Orangetheory. The coaches do a great job helping everyone get the most out of their workout.” — Roger M. ORANGETHEORY FITNESS | 621 E. Southlake Blvd., Suite 100 | 817.796.9660 | Orangetheory.com 14 • FALL ’21

SEASONED OFFENSE BEGINS STATE TITLE QUEST WITH NEW QB BY Z AC H WA R N E R PHOTO BY BLUDOOR STUDIOS

I

n the world of high school football, lineup changes from year to year are inevitable. Stars from last season invariably move on and new go-to players must be discovered. The life of each season includes the reality of injuries that must be prepared for, causing coaching staffs to move players around in order to find the right fit for upcoming games. These are some situations football coaches must plan for and expect. However, the scenario thrown at the Southlake Carroll football team just before the start of the 2021 season is a whole new animal, created from a mix of new college rules, high-caliber talent and wideopen opportunities at a high-profile university. Quinn Ewers, the No. 2 college recruit in the nation for his class, was expected to return for his senior season quarterbacking the Dragons after helping Carroll reach the Class 6A Div. I state championship game in January. Those plans abruptly changed when Ewers announced in August he would depart from high school to enroll early at Ohio State. Doing so afforded Ewers the opportunity to make the most of lucrative endorsement deals and compete for a spot on the nationally-ranked Buckeye roster this fall. Dragon head football coach Riley Dodge admits that losing his star quarterback a season early was an unexpected curveball. But it doesn’t change his team’s mission or expectations in 2021. “For us as a football staff and me as a head football coach, we’re the only ones that this has happened to in the entire country,” says Dodge, who enters his fourth year as Carroll’s head coach. “It’s one of those things [the players] saw coming [but] was also a surprise to them at the same time. Very, very quickly, the news came out. “But these kids are resilient,” he continues. “You can talk to each one of them and they’re all going to say it’s a ‘next-man-up’ kind of mentality. They’ve got great heads on their shoulders and I think, too, that it will kind of give us a little bit of an edge. Even though the outside might think of us as underdogs, it kind of gives these kids a little bit more motivation.”

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

As the program has shown several times in the past, Carroll football never turns down the opportunity to prove skeptics wrong. Take last year for example, when a team with just three returning starters on offense and none on defense came just a few points shy of winning it all. If there’s one thing the Dragons’ offensive unit learned last year during the regular season and into its playoff run, it’s that every player must be ready to step up and do their part. Ewers suffered an injury midway through the regular season and missed six games, including the first two playoff games. The Dragons continued to produce and outplay opponents, going 6-0 in his absence. “Last year, [Ewers] went down, and it was a really hard blow for our team, but we didn’t miss a beat. We kept on pushing,” says Jake Hall, a junior offensive guard who logged playing time on varsity last season. “We’re going to be even better and ready to go, and just live in the shadows. People are going to know who we are by the end of the year.” Although the new heir to Carroll’s quarterback throne — junior Kaden Anderson — comes into the season with much less hype than his predecessor, the Dragons’ new signalcaller already has the confidence and support of his team. So much so that he was named one of this year’s team captains before even making his first varsity start under center. Described by Carroll junior running back Owen Allen as a natural leader who knows how to put the ball in the right spot, Anderson received some meaningful snaps as a backup during the regular season and playoffs last year. Going 14-of-19 for 169 yards, three touchdowns and just one interception, Anderson would have spent another season being groomed for his chance to take the reins had Ewers remained on the team as originally planned. But the junior’s character and abilities show he’s ready to step into the starting role this year, coach Dodge says. “Nowadays, if you have a quarterback that’s a grade above you that’s the starter, you’ll typically

FALL ’21 • 17

see [the backup] leave to go play at another high school,” Dodge says. “But he stayed the course and waited his turn, and obviously his turn came a little earlier than any of us expected. But he’s a very mature kid and understands the opportunity he has in front of him, and I guarantee he’ll make the most of it.” Anderson will have an arsenal of weapons around him to look to while he gets comfortable under center. Allen, a starting running back since his freshman year, brings plenty of big-game experience and will be a huge focal point for the Dragons’ offense. Gaining 2,063 yards and scoring 28 rushing touchdowns as a sophomore last year, Allen was the top rusher in the area and is one of six returning starters on offense. Even without Ewers, Allen says the amount of talent on this year’s team is impressive. Combining that with motivation generated by falling short in last season’s state title game could make for another memorable run. “They’ve been talking about this year since I was in fifth or sixth grade,” Allen says. “This is the year that all of us have been waiting for. I’ve never been part of a tighter team. I think everyone’s really confident and ready for this year to get going. “I think everybody since last January has had a bad taste in their mouth, and we’ve been using that to kind of light a fire under us and propel us through offseason workouts.”

Carroll looks poised once again to excel when taking to the air. Senior receiver Landon Samson, the Dragons leader in receptions (75) and receiving yards (1,293) in 2020-21, and one of the top receivers statwise in the area, proves a reliable target in the passing game. Senior tight end RJ Maryland, who caught 30 passes for 736 yards and 13 scores last year, is a big scoring threat as well. Samson, a South Carolina commit, says dealing with challenges and adversity over the last year has made the Carroll football team even stronger. From the departure of Ewers — a good friend of Samson’s — to the loss in the state title game and the passing of linebackers coach Carl Anderson earlier this year, the Dragons have strengthened their resolve to be a close-knit team as they strive to reach their goals. “I think the bond is insane,” Samson says. “It’s going to be a family bond and a brotherhood that we’re never going to lose, and I think that’s what’s going to carry us this season.” Last year, a young and inexperienced team might not have known how good they really were until late in the season. This year, they know the power they wield, with many of the same key players returning. Bringing home the program’s ninth state championship trophy is something they don’t want to let slip away if in that position again come December. “It has made us really hungry because it’s always sitting in the back of your mind,” Maryland says. “We just want to finish the job this time.”

N

ow in his fourth year as the Southlake Carroll head coach, Riley Dodge is ready for the upcoming season, especially with a slate of seasoned seniors ready to take

the field. “I love them. I have a special place in my heart for the senior class,” Riley says. “They were eighth graders when I got here, so they’ve been [here] four years with this coaching staff. We really feel like we’ve put a stamp on this senior class, and they’ve put a stamp on us as a staff.” Going into the season with three goals — win the district championship, practice on Thanksgiving and win the state championship — Riley says the team spent the offseason working on their strength and conditioning and improving their football skills. “I’m just always excited about new opportunities with whoever you have kid-wise, but with this group, I know what they’re made of,” Riley says. “We had an unbelievable year [last year], so they played in big-time ballgames. I don’t think any ballgame that they’re going to play in this year is too big for them.”

Landon Samson, Wide Receiver (6)

Coming off a breakout junior season with four years of varsity experience, Landon Samson has big goals for his final season. “I want to be First-Team All-State this year...I also want to get that ring, finish what we started,” Landon says. “I also want to have hopefully over 2,000 yards. I think that would be a big accomplishment and solidify me as one of the best receivers to come through Southlake.” Excited to get back in the game, Landon says he’s ready to see the stadium full of Dragon fans.

Joey Baker, Offensive Lineman (71)

Joey Baker is more than ready for 2021. With two-and-a-half years on varsity under his belt, the 6-foot-4, 250-pound tackle spent the offseason working on getting stronger and faster. “You can always improve your technique,” Joey says. “I just really felt that last year I was lacking a bit in my strength, so I really put in the extra time in the weight room this summer.” With a goal to win the state championship and make the All-State team, Joey, a Kansas commit, is determined to make the most of his last year before heading off to college.

Calder Bray, Defensive Lineman (91)

Going into his third year on varsity, Calder Bray is looking forward to his senior year, from practices to team dinners, even as the Dragons face one of the hardest district schedules in the state. “I think it’s tough,” Calder says about this season’s schedule. “I think our out-of-districts are insane, and I think our districts are always a challenge. Our out-of-districts are definitely going to test this team early, but I’m pretty confident about it.” In preparation for the season, Calder spent the offseason in the weight room, working to improve his strength.

Nate Gall, Linebacker (30)

After getting hurt last season, Nate Gall is ready to step up and make a name for himself in his third year on varsity. “I’m just making sure I’m healthy and [working on] footwork and speed right now,” Nate says. Nate says he’s excited for the season’s schedule and non-district games, which he says will prepare the team when the district games roll around. With just one year left as a Dragon, Nate is sure to savor every moment playing with his teammates.

Avyonne Jones, Defensive Back (1)

After a celebrated junior season, Avyonne Jones is excited to take even more of a leadership role this year. “Our whole class is kind of who we have out on the field this year,” Avyonne says. “We have a lot of young kids that are coming up and rotating. Being able to be a senior and be a leader and help bring those kids along is huge.” Avyonne, a Wisconsin commit, says after working to improve their knowledge of the game, this year’s team feels great about their chances for a state championship.

Allan Kleiman, Linebacker (15)

Now entering his third year on the varsity team, Allan Kleiman has spent the offseason mentally preparing for the fight for a state championship. “Definitely just the mental side of the game, because the games are very long, very tiring,” Allan says when asked what he’s worked on improving. With the season just getting underway, Allan says he’s excited about the opportunity to compete against some great teams across Texas. And like his fellow seniors, Allan is not taking the opportunity to play with his friends one last season for granted.

RJ Maryland, Wide Receiver (13)

This upcoming season will serve as RJ Maryland’s second on varsity and he wants to do all he can for his team — especially after working to improve in nearly every aspect of the game. “Running, catching, juke moves, spin moves, hurdles, mossing, all of that,” RJ says. Poised for an even better season than he had last year, the son of former Dallas Cowboy Russell Maryland has his eye on the prize. And that prize is a state championship.

Owen Ohser, Wide Receiver (4)

Now in his third year on the varsity team, Owen Ohser is eager to step into a leadership role and serve as an example to his younger teammates. “I’m really excited,” Owen says. “[We’re] just gonna go finish what we started last year.” Working during the offseason to improve his route running, Owen says the tough non-district games at the beginning of the season will help prepare the team for the playoffs.

Following up an All-District performance a year ago, Benecio Porras says he feels good about his senior season. “We have a lot of returning starters, we have a more experienced team now, and we just have a bunch of underdogs ready to fight and prove the whole world wrong,” Benecio says. Having spent the offseason honing both his athletic and leadership skills, Benecio says he’s ready to help lead the team to the state championship game.

Max Reyes, Defensive Back (24)

One of the few two-sport athletes on the team — he plays baseball in the spring — Max Reyes rarely takes time off and has big goals for this season. “My goal is definitely All-District, and then hopefully to get the team to 16-0 and win state,” Max says. Going into this third year on the varsity team, Max worked on improving his strength and speed during the offseason. With a schedule he’s excited for, Max is ready to help lead the team into the playoffs stronger than ever.

Josh Spaeth, Defensive Back (11)

Now in his third year on varsity, and after moving from offense to defense to help the team, Josh Spaeth says he expects this season to be a great one. “We have a lot of pressure coming back from a state game last year,” Josh says. “It’s gonna be a fun ride.” Going into the season, Josh’s personal goals include making All-District and All-State while his team goals are to go 16-0. After an offseason spent trying to get stronger and becoming more of a leader, Josh is more than ready to take to the field.

MEET THE CARROLL ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB’S NEW PRESIDENT

C

arroll Football has welcomed a new quarterback to the team this fall. But while Kaden Anderson will be making big plays on the field, his mother Susan will be supporting his team from the sidelines as the Carroll Athletic Booster Club’s new president. With seven years of community service and volunteer experience under her belt, Susan is excited to support all of the Dragons this season.

WE HAVE LIVED IN SOUTHLAKE… for eight years now. We’re a big football family, and we moved here from Coppell for the excellent school district. I have three kiddos, two of whom have already graduated from Carroll, and their experience was incredible from athletics to academics. My youngest, Kaden, is a junior in high school and is really excited to play as quarterback this upcoming season. I WAS ALWAYS HEAVILY INVOLVED… with my kiddos, from being the room mom in kindergarten to the team mom for their athletics. The booster club pretty much ran everything at the old school district I was in, so when I got to Southlake, that was the first organization I immediately sought out. I knew I wanted to get involved and I knew that was the best way to give back to the most athletes while helping out my own kids at the same time. That was the very first thing I looked for when our family moved to Southlake. ONE OF MY BIGGEST PUSHES… was expanding opportunities at the middle school level. Booster club covers seventh through 12th grade, but whenever I went over to middle school, I realized they were kind of getting hand-me-downs from the older kids. I pushed really hard to get them new athletic uniforms as well as some new track equipment. Now we have support at the seventh and eighth grade level. I HAVE SERVED THREE DIFFERENT LEADERSHIP ROLES… during my seven years with CABC. I was vice president of membership for two years, then I was vice president of sponsorship for two years before becoming treasurer these last two years. HAVING WORKED IN SO MANY ROLES… I feel like I have a strong background and have learned all the inner workings of CABC. I want to continue the continuity and partnership between CABC, the athletic department and the district. I AM… just excited to be around people again. I’m looking forward to supporting all of our coaches, and I’m just so happy I’ll be going to a game in person again. Carroll loves supporting our kids, and I can’t wait to do just that this season.

CHEER CO-CAPTAINS Macey Robbins and Olivia MacLeod have had big cheerleading aspirations ever since they were in elementary school. Now they lead the Dragon cheerleading team as its co-captains. After last year’s challenging season, Olivia and Macey look forward to bonding with their cheerleaders while showing their support for the Dragons. Dragon Cheer has brought Olivia and Macey some of their best friends in life, and they’ll always be thankful for that.

D

ragon pride isn’t just about the football team — it’s about everybody on the field, whether they cheer or play an instrument. After an unconventional season last year, these students are more than ready to represent their teams in the year ahead.
